Pope Leo XIV was in Turkey on Thanksgiving delivering his message of unity to the Middle east as part of his first foreign trip as pontiff. Fox's William La juneess this is of.

Course the first American pope. This is his first trip abroad as pope. Vatican experts say this is a challenging trip. He could have gone to the US where he grew up or to Peru where he is a missionary. Instead, he chose Turkey, a country of 250 million Muslims, war torn Lebanon as well, a divided country with a collapsing economy supporting millions of Palestinian refugees in just a week after that Israeli airstrike. This trip, the pope said, is about building bridges not just with Catholics and Muslims. He'll also meet with Turkey's chief Jewish rabbi and leaders of the Eastern Orthodox Church with whom Catholics separated about a thousand years ago. Trips like this are also political, right? The pope is a global figure in foreign affairs. Think of the crucial role that Pope John Paul played in the fall of communism.
