When a compassionate release Statute was written 40 years ago, it allowed for a federal prison inmate to be released under compelling and extraordinary circumstances. Sentencing Commission guidelines mentioned things like terminal illness as a reason, but a lower court applied it to the case of convicted murderer Joe Fernandez. After agreeing there were issues with his actual case, Justice Elena Kagan questioned if it was being used in place of litigation.

One in three Americans approve of the way the president is managing the government, down from 43% in this Associated Press Newark poll in March, 5% of Democrats say he's doing a good job with it. 68% of Republicans approve, down from 81.
