The case centers a federal inmate in Hawaii who claims he was not given medical treatment after a 2021 prison riot. The inmate, Kikai Watanabe, said after saying he was feeling pain and requesting a hospital visit. A nurse at the prison, Francis Nielsen, refused the request but did provide over the counter medications. Watanabe was later diagnosed with a bone fracture. A lawsuit he filed was rejected, but a federal appeals court brought it back two years ago in an unrelated case last year, the Supreme Court ruled an inmate seeking to sue a corrections officer for assault.
