Republicans had spent much of Saturday's rare session hoping to strike a deal with Democrats. Democrats wanted the White House to unfreeze federal funding for several programs like the NIH and foreign aid. In exchange, they would approve several of the president's non controversial nominees. But the president, though in a true social post, compared the demands to political extortion. He told Republicans to reject the offer and to tell Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to quote, go to hell. Schumer says it's the president who pulled the plug on the negotiations.
