Fight over a gun law in Hawaii is heading to the US Supreme Court, justices agreeing to hear the term that begins Monday.

Hawaii lawmakers approved a ban of guns on private property unless the owner specifically allows them. It also prohibits firearms at beaches, parks, bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. Attorneys for the state say the law strikes a reasonable balance between gun rights and public safety. The Trump administration urged the Supreme Court to consider the case, arguing it imposes restrictions that violates a 2022 Supreme Court ruling. In that opinion, the justices said there is a right to carry firearms in public.
