Below is a detailed summary of the key topics discussed during the 4AM ET newscast.
Sue Guzman opened the broadcast by highlighting the tense political climate in Texas. Democratic state lawmakers are reportedly leaving Texas for Chicago in an effort to block a scheduled vote on redistricting. Republicans anticipate that the redrawing of district lines could secure them additional seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to remove the fleeing lawmakers from office, escalating the conflict between the state’s executive branch and its legislative minority.
A manhunt is underway for Michael Brown, an Army veteran accused of killing four individuals at a bar in Anaconda, Montana, on Friday morning. The incident has prompted federal authorities to assist in the search.
Brown is considered armed and dangerous, heightening the urgency of the authorities' search efforts.
A tragic head-on collision in Lakewood, New Jersey, resulted in the deaths of Maria Pleytez and her 11-year-old daughter, Dianara Cortez, while they were out for milkshakes. The driver responsible, Raul Luna Perez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was apprehended at the scene.
Authorities noted signs of intoxication in Perez, and subsequent tests confirmed his impaired state, leading to his arrest.
In a significant development, President Trump’s top economic adviser, Kevin Hassett, addressed the administration's decision to fire Erica McIntyre, Director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), shortly after the release of the latest jobs report.
Hassett expressed skepticism about the accuracy of the BLS data, suggesting potential manipulation:
The dismissal has been met with criticism from Democrats, who label it as an authoritarian move by Trump.
In a move to renegotiate trade deals, President Trump has announced substantial increases in tariffs imposed on U.S. imports. These new tariffs will affect over 60 trading partners, with rates starting at 10% and reaching up to 40% for certain countries.
The announcement came just hours before the self-imposed deadline, underscoring the administration's commitment to securing more favorable trade agreements.
President Trump also proposed that some of the revenue generated from these tariffs be distributed directly to middle and low-income Americans as a dividend.
A tropical weather system has intensified into Tropical Storm Dexter, posing potential threats to the Southeast. The National Hurricane Center in Miami has indicated that Dexter is expected to move away from the U.S. coast, remaining north of Bermuda. However, certain areas, including parts of Georgia, are already experiencing significant rainfall.
Residents in affected regions are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as Dexter approaches.
