We're going in. Lisa Brady, FOX News. Those words from President Trump a short time ago signaling he does plan federal intervention to fight crime in Chicago and Baltimore despite resistance from Democratic city and state leaders, including Illinois's governor.
President Donald Trump
I would love to have Governor Pritzker call me. I'd gain respect for him and say we do have a problem and we'd love you to send in the troops because you know what, the people, they have to be protected.
Lisa Brady
The president says he has an obligation to act without specifying when. And he points to a violent holiday weekend in Chicago where police say 58 people were shot, including eight killed. The National Guard is part of an ongoing federal crime crackdown in D.C. earlier today, a federal judge ruling that it was illegal to send the military into LA during violent protests over immigration enforcement. The Justice Department argues troops were used to protect federal officers and facilities, not to enforce laws. The president says his administration will seek an expedited decision from the US Supreme Court as it appeals a ruling that the president overstepped his authority by using an emergency act to impose multiple tariffs. He says those tariffs are key for winning the air race.
President Donald Trump
We're leading because of tariffs. We're leading because of talent. And this is where they'd like to be. But without the tariffs, we wouldn't have a chance because we wouldn't be able to protect those investments of the companies coming in. So if you took away tariffs, we could end up being a third world country.
Lisa Brady
He says that tariff ruling is why stocks have been sinking today. A partial rebound though. The Dow down 249 at the bell after plunging more than 500. The president's comments coming after announcing that Space Force Command will move from Colorado to Alabama. Meantime, Secretary of State Rubio confirming the US Military conducted a lethal strike in the Caribbean against a drug vessel that that left Venezuela where the leader has criticized a US Naval presence.
