The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, the second most populated island in the Philippines archipelago. At least 37 people were killed by collapse, collapsing buildings and landslides. Many left coastal homes fearing a tsunami. But the four and a half foot waves caused minimal damage. The quake struck on the first day back at school for students following a two month break. Many of the injured were youngsters gathered for morning assemblies.
