880 sailors and marines lost their lives after the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was hit by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea just after midnight, July 30, 1945. About 300 died within minutes. Many more died over the next several days from wounds suffered in the attack, dehydration and shark attacks in the ocean. The Navy originally had no idea because no distress call was sent. The initial Japanese attack knocked out the Indianapolis power and radios in the ship's control room. Survivors were eventually spotted in the ocean by an Air force plane. Only 316 survived. The last was pulled from the water August 3, 1945. Kevin Uretsky, Fox News on Wall Street.

Governor Greg Abbott's Warning to Democrats
At the outset of the broadcast, Dave Anthony highlights a significant political conflict in Texas. Governor Greg Abbott has issued a stern warning to statehouse Democrats, referring to them as "derelicts" in a letter (00:02). Abbott threatens that if the Democrats continue to abstain from participating in the congressional redistricting vote, Republicans may consider calling a special session with the power to remove absentee Democrats from office.
Democratic Strategy and Accusations of Racism
Jill Nadeau elaborates on the Democrats' strategy, noting that most of the 62 Democrats in the Texas House have relocated to Illinois and New York. Their aim is to block a quorum, thereby preventing the legislature from voting on the new redistricting maps. If successful, this maneuver would grant the GOP an additional five seats in the U.S. House. State Representative Gene Wu, chair of the House Democratic Caucus, accuses Governor Abbott of employing an "intentionally racist map to steal the voices of millions of black and Latino Texans" (00:19). This claim underscores the deepening partisan divide over Texas's future congressional representation.
Search for Michael Brown in Montana
The broadcast moves to national security concerns, with Dave Anthony reporting on the continued manhunt for Michael Brown, an army veteran suspected of a deadly bar shooting in Montana that resulted in four fatalities (00:50). Kevin Uretsky emphasizes the extensive cooperation among federal agencies in the search: "We've got tremendous cooperation, Homeland Security from our Federal partners, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudson" (01:01). Brown is deemed armed and dangerous, highlighting the urgency and intensity of the investigation.
Quadruple Murder Suspect in Tennessee
Simultaneously, the search persists in Tennessee for Austin Drummond, accused of murdering four family members and abandoning a baby in a car seat 40 miles away (01:07). Two other men have been arrested as accessories after the fact to first-degree murder, though authorities have not disclosed the specifics of their involvement (01:07). This double crisis underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in addressing violent crimes across the nation.
Tribute to the Iconic Actress
Dave Anthony pays homage to Loni Anderson, beloved for her role in the 1970s and '80s sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati. Anderson, who passed away at 79 after a prolonged illness, is celebrated for her contributions to television. She received two Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations for her performance in WKRP (01:07). Additionally, her personal life is briefly touched upon, mentioning her marriage to Burt Reynolds, her third husband (01:07). Anderson's death marks the loss of a cherished figure in American entertainment.
Recalling America's Worst Naval Disaster
In a reflective segment, Dave Anthony and Kevin Uretsky recount the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, marking its 80th anniversary (03:05). On July 30, 1945, the heavy cruiser was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea, resulting in the loss of 880 sailors and marines (03:21). Approximately 300 succumbed within minutes, with many more perishing over subsequent days due to injuries, dehydration, and shark attacks (03:21). The tragedy remained hidden initially as no distress call was sent, and survivors were only discovered days later by an Air Force plane (03:21). This historical account serves as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II.
Positive Movement in Stock Futures
Dave Anthony provides a brief overview of the financial markets, noting a rise of nearly 300 points in Dow futures following a significant sell-off the previous Friday that had previously dragged the Dow down by over 500 points (04:07). The NASDAQ also experienced a rebound, recovering from a loss of over 400 points (04:07). This uptick suggests a potential stabilization or recovery in the stock market after the earlier downturn.
NASCAR COR 350 Victory by William Byron
The sports segment kicks off with Will Tane and Tim McMaster discussing the thrilling NASCAR race at the Iowa COR 350 (04:07). William Byron clinched the win, creatively powered by ethanol, finishing the race with only minimal fuel remaining. His victory involved 144 laps completed on a single tank of gas, propelling him to first place in the season points race (04:23). Chase Briscoe finished in second place, while Brad Keselowski secured third, a critical position as he still needs a win to qualify for the playoffs (04:29). The win signifies Byron's strong position as the season progresses, with three more races remaining for drivers to secure playoff spots.
Atlanta Braves Triumph Over Cincinnati Reds
In baseball news, Dave Anthony reports on an unusual event where a baseball game was held at a NASCAR speedway between the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds (04:49). The combined field was situated between the racing oval and Bristol, Tennessee. Originally scheduled for Saturday night, the game was suspended due to rain and subsequently completed the following day. The Braves emerged victorious with a score of 4-2 (04:49), showcasing the versatility of sports venues in hosting different types of sporting events.
