Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says he's directed the Federal Transit Administration to look into the safety of of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority after a 66 year old woman was stabbed on a train and a 40 year old man was stabbed at a transit station. Duffy notes in a statement that security incidents on Atlanta transit happen at a rate more than twice the national average. The FTA will focus on crime and fare evasion as well as how funds are spent in Atlanta. Duffy says the FDA's focus on transit safety in other cities has resulted in a reduction of crime in D.C. the appointment of a transit police chief in Los Angeles, and helped lead to the installation of new gates meant to stop fare evasion in San Francisco. Tyco Fire Products, which manufactures firefighting foam that contaminated the water supply in northeast Wisconsin with so called forever chemicals which don't break down in water, has agreed to a $10 million settlement with the state. Governor Tony Evers called the settlement his historic and important milestone in the fight for clean water. Economists looking at mixed news on the job market ahead of the monthly employment report coming out tomorrow morning.

The number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time rose by 13,000 last week to 225,000. It is slightly more than expected, but within the range of a healthy job market. Continuing claims, those remaining on Benefits declined by 8,000 to 1.77 million for the week before. Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas says there were more than 97,000 job cuts announced last month, up 16% from April. Challenger says artificial intelligence was the leading reason for employ job cuts in May for the third month in a row.
