That closure became inevitable after Congress and the White House clawed back about $1.1 billion in funding for the next two budget years, most of which was targeted for over 1500 local public radio and television stations. The US the CPB was created by President Lyndon Johnson in November of 1967, aimed at fostering instructional, educational and cultural programming.
