Investigators say at least four people opened fire at the Brooklyn lounge and what they believe is a gang related shooting. Community crisis management teams have now been dispatched to escalate tensions among gangs. The shooting is a reminder of a key issue for voters and the upcoming mayoral election, which is less than three months out. Zoram Mamdani, who has walked back his previous comments on defunding the police, praised first responders this morning and then later today doubled down on his campaign promise to bring violence interrupters to New Yorkers through a new city agency he wants to create. And Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa wrot wrote in part, quote, I'm the only candidate with the courage to restore law and order in New York City.

Two American tourists drowned just hours apart at Carnival Cruise Line's private Bahamas resorts. On Friday, lifeguards responded to Celebration Key on Grand Bahama island, one at the beach, one in a lagoon. The Victims were a 79 year old man and a 74 year old woman. Authorities are investigating. Autopsies are underway. Carnival says its care team is assisting the families. The $600 million getaway opened less than a month ago. National Guard troops from more states are headed to Washington, D.C. to take part in President Trump's crime crackdown. State governors have agreed to send soldiers to the nation's capital. Three to 400 are coming from West Virginia, 150 from Ohio and 200 from South Carolina. They'll be helping the 800 D.C. national Guardsmen and hundreds of federal agents already here patrolling the streets after Trump federalized the city's police force on Monday. The effort has led to over 240 arrests so far and 38 illegal guns taken off the streets. But D.C. s mayor isn't too happy the military is involved. Pope Leo XIV spent the last Sunday of his summer vacation with refugees, the homeless and poor people. The leader of the world's Roman Catholics celebrated at a special mass for them and he invited them to the Vatican's lakeside estate for a luncheon of lasagna and roast veal.
