"The probe will look into whether Smith violated the Hatch act during his criminal investigation into President Trump's handling of classified documents and alleged efforts to subvert the 2020." [00:15]
Trump has pleaded not guilty in both cases related to classified documents and election subversion, which were subsequently dismissed following the 2024 election.
The Senate has entered its August recess after a weekend session where 13 of President Trump’s nominees were approved. However, the President is pushing to have 150 nominations approved during the same period.
Jack Callaghan reported:
"President Trump looking to get 150 of them approved. Senator Chuck Schumer says Democrats will continue to block the nominations because the president is trying to bulldoze them through who is hurt the most when Republicans go at it alone, it's the American people back home." [00:38]
President Trump accused Senator Chuck Schumer of demanding a $1 billion funding deal to approve a small number of nominees, highlighting the partisan struggle over Senate confirmations.
On the anniversary of his signing of the "one big beautiful spending and tax cut bill" into law, Senator Ted Cruz emphasized the bill's benefits:
"The bill will give money to families and allow them to send their kids to the schools of their choice. There's going to be billions of dollars of new scholarships for K12 education all across this country..." [01:59]
Democrats are positioning the bill as a target for criticism in upcoming midterm and 2028 presidential campaigns, arguing it imposes excessive costs on essential programs like Medicaid and food stamps.
In geological news, a minor earthquake was felt in New Jersey and New York. CB Cotton reported the details:
"The U.S. Geological Survey reports a quake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale struck near Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, at 10:18pm Eastern Time. The borough is about 13 miles west of Midtown Manhattan, where tremors were also felt." [03:13]
Residents experienced tremors lasting approximately 10 seconds in Hasbrouck Heights, with additional sensations of a loud boom and brief tremors in parts of Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
This incident follows a rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake in April near Lebanon, New Jersey, which also impacted New York City. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the latest quake.
A crackdown on a recent mob attack in Cincinnati saw progress as more suspects were apprehended. CB Cotton provided an update on the situation:
"Four out of six total suspects have now been arrested and made appearances in court. Dominic Kittle is now facing charges of misdemeanor assault and aggravated riot. He was given $150,000 bond." [03:59]
Despite the presence of a crowd witnessing the violence, law enforcement noted that only one individual called 911 during the incident. Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval addressed the event, emphasizing unity over division:
"People must reject racial division." [04:39]
With two suspects still at large, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to fully resolve the aftermath of the downtown brawl that occurred last Saturday.
In international news, developments concerning humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip were discussed:
"Egypt State Affiliated TV says two fuel trucks carrying about 107 tons of diesel are set to enter the Gaza Strip today. Gaza's health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, says fuel shortages are hindering hospitals operations." [04:39]
The influx of diesel is critical for maintaining hospital functions amid ongoing fuel shortages, highlighting the precarious humanitarian situation in the region.
