Jersey and Virginia elect new governors on Tuesday, two races that have attracted national party leaders to the campaign trail. Fox News polling last week shows Democrats in both races leading their Republican opponents. The economy, immigration, energy cost and health care are dominant issues. New York City residents are also electing a new mayor in a race that has energized progressives, 34 year old Democratic Socialist Zoran Mamdani holds a commanding double digit lead in polling against former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who failed to win the Democratic nomination in this year's primary election. Fox's Alexandria Haas Trump administration's position is that cartel strikes do not fall under the War Powers Resolution because troops are not being sent into hostilities within the resolution. Day 34 of the government shutdown matches the 35 day record. Tomorrow, senators return to work following another three day weekend. The floor opens late this afternoon, perhaps giving senators enough time to get through airport flight delays caused by tower staffing shortages in the shutdown. The government shutdown is now entering its second month and there is still no end in sight. Millions are feeling the strain as food stamp delays grow and federal aid dries up. Health care premiums are also rising. The main sticking point is over Obamacare subsidies that are set to expire soon. Republicans want to reopen the government at current spending levels for first and then negotiate the issue. But Democrats say the subsidies must be extended before any deal.

Average flight delay at Newark Airport is about two hours and some flights are more than three hours late due to staffing shortages. Now, this comes amid a surge in air traffic controllers calling off of work as they deal with growing financial stress and pressure. Nearly 13,000 air traffic controllers have worked for weeks now without pay due to the government shutdown. And there are also some long flight delays at Austin Bergstrom Airport in Texas due to staffing shortages.

Newark and JFK continue to be the most delayed starting off today, according to FlightAware. Some Republicans predict Democrats will fold their opposition to opening the government later this week or next after Election Day passes because the shutdown chaos maybe gives them leverage.
