The legal team for accused killer Luigi Mangione is working to challenge a statement his lawyers say was made by his own mother that could be damaging to his case, including suggesting that the fatal shooting of healthcare CEO Brian Thompson might be something that she could see him doing.

Luigi Mangione's defense attorneys are demanding prosecutors provide proof to back up this claim made during a high profile news conference by the NYPD Chief of Detectives last December. But in newly filed court documents, Mangione's attorneys say to date there has been no documentation provided in discovery that confirms the Chief of Detective statement as to Mrs. Mangione's alleged statement. In fact, all the discovery provided so far indicates that she did not make such a statement. They go on to say if it is true that Mrs. Mangione never made this statement, then it is shocking and unconscionable that the District Attorney's office and the NYPD have never corrected the highly prejudicial false statement.

CEO Doug McMillan, who's credited with leading the company through the pandemic and boosting online shopping options, is stepping down at the end of January. McMillan is 59. John Furner, Walmart's head of US operations, will take over as CEO. Furner started with Walmart as an hourly associate and his father was a Walmart executive.
