Pakistan's foreign Ministry says it's a 48 hour ceasefire until Friday night. Its military says it's killed dozens of Afghan security forces and militants, repelling what it calls unprovoked assaults. Afghan forces say they returned fire, killing several of Pakistan soldiers seizing military posts and weapons. Key border crossings are closed and some people living on the border have fled their homes. Afghanistan's ruling Taliban denies accusations of harboring armed Pakistani insurgents. Shoppers are expecting higher prices as we head into peak holiday shopping season.

Most consumers are expecting the economy to weaken in the year ahead, according to a Deloitte survey of some 4,000 people, the number of pessimistic responders growing to 57% from 30% last year. That's the most negative economic outlook since Deloitte began tracking it in 1997, and even tops results from 2008 during the Great Recession. Average anticipated spending just under $1,600. That's 10% less than last year on holiday items, which 77% expect will cost more than last year. The group slashing spending the most, gen Z, those 18 to 28, planning to spend roughly 34% less last holiday season. Lilyann Wu, Fox News.

Scientists from the University of Washington have deployed a little over 1 mile of fiber optic cable into the Salish Sea to test whether Internet cables can monitor endangered orcas. The technology transforms cables into continuous underwater microphones that can pinpoint whale locations and track their movements. If successful, the world's 870,000 miles of existing undersea cables could become an ocean monitoring network. It could provide real time data on how marine mammals respond to ship noise.
