A New Jersey congressman says he's introducing legislation that forces airlines to pay customers for flight delays.

The Biden administration had a proposed rule that would force airlines to pay customers anywhere from two to nearly $800, severe flight disruptions that were in the airline's control, like for mechanical issues or outages. But the Trump administration removed the rule. Now New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer is trying to get a similar rule passed through Congress for passengers delayed more than five hours. It could mean up to $500 from the airlines. Airlines must refund people for canceled flights. Already, Newark's been plagued with issues this year. In late August, there were two outages at the Philadelphia Air Traffic Control center that manages Newark's airspace within one day and similar outages that slowed traffic into the airport this spring as well.
