The Office of Personnel Management is reclassifying tens of thousands of federal employees to improve performance and accountability. The agency's director says a rule taking effect next month will drastically reduce the of federal workers considered career employees. That designation, which applies to more than 2 million individuals, provides legal and procedural protections against termination or demotion.
