I talk about my experience in Miami all the time, so I want to know more about yours. What part of Miami are you from?

[Dexter Carr]

So I'm from originally from Palmetto Bay. Like down south. Down south. And then I went to school at Kendall. So like I went to Killian, you know. Yeah, exactly. Oh yeah, you went to Killian, right. So I went to this. I started at Coral Reef and then I went to.

[Kid Fury]

That's where my little brothers went.

[Dexter Carr]

And then I went to this school called Palmer Trinity because I was too bad and I needed some, ah, structure.

[Kid Fury]

That was the story I wanted for myself. Like, I think I was a noo nu.

[Dexter Carr]

Oh my God, I love being a new.

[Kid Fury]

New.

[Dexter Carr]

That was so good.

[Kid Fury]

That was it. So tell me, like, what are like some of your favorite aspects? Especially like looking back and having been out of Miami what are some of your favorite tried and true parts of Miami?

[Dexter Carr]

You know what I like about Miami? That honestly, like, no matter where you go, rich, poor, this neighborhood, Caribbean, this. Everybody's ghetto. It is a ghetto. There's a ghetto film over the entire city of Miami. It's true. Because, like, we just don't really care. Like, you got girls in the club barefoot, or you like parking your car where you shouldn't park it at the mall and just getting out to get some real quick. Like, it's a ghetto city.

[Kid Fury]

It is.

[Dexter Carr]

I just love it. You know what?

[Kid Fury]

That's a truth that really should be brought to light.

[Dexter Carr]

It's true. You can be rich and still be hood. I'm sorry, baby.

Thank you. And the girls come to Miami, and they get stupid, drunk, and high, so it's like they don't really realize they're being ghetto. So they don't really realize you walking

[Dexter Carr]

on the beach with a big cup in your hand of a fruity drink is ghetto, babe.

It's horrible. Like, that's trash. It is, but it's our trash.

It's our trash, and I love it. I wouldn't change it for the world. I wouldn't want to be from anywhere else.

Honestly, I genuinely feel the exact same way.

Never. Mm.

It's a big city in, like, I think, the metropolitan sense in America.

[Dexter Carr]

Yes.

[Kid Fury]

But it's, like, it's tropical. It's warm. It's, like, ideal for many places. Like, for most people, it's like a vacation or a vacation.

It literally is.

[Kid Fury]

And for us, it's home for literally is.

[Dexter Carr]

And when people tell me that they're going for vacation, I'm kind of like, yeah, but where are you going? And they always say the same thing. South Beach. Or, like, now people are saying, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. And I'm like, wow, okay. But you're not gonna go down to, like, 1 52nd? Like, of course. All right, all right, fine.

Hell, no.

[Dexter Carr]

Whatever.

[Kid Fury]

Wynwood is, like, their new little, like, rodeo.

[Dexter Carr]

It is.

And it's, like, nice now. It's, like, malls and stuff now.

It's cute work. I didn't have that experience.

[Dexter Carr]

Not at all.

That was just overtown. So I don't really know, period.

That's by the arena.

[Kid Fury]

So how did your. How does your passion for dance begin? And how did that, like, manifest at home?

[Dexter Carr]

Okay, so I was going to a studio, like, a dance studio with my friends. Because, like, again, like, in Miami, you just do things, right? Like, we just like, oh, y'. All going to dance class. I'm gonna go to dance class too. Like, literally that. Cause I don't have to be home. Cause my parents don't care where I go until 10, 11pm that's just how we grow up. But I ended up dancing for Chris Brown because they did an announcement on the radio for an audition on Power 96. I will never forget this.

[Kid Fury]

Yep.

[Dexter Carr]

And it was like Chris Brown was looking for dancers. I was at that fucking audition. Can I cuss? I don't know if I can cuss.

[Kid Fury]

Hell yes.

[Dexter Carr]

Oh. I was like, never mind. It's you. I can cuss. But yeah. So there was an audition. It was down the street. Like somewhere in downtown Miami somewhere. And like, literally down the street. And I waited and I waited and I waited. I waited, I waited and I got it. And once I did it, we filmed it at fiu. That was where the Kiss Kiss video was filmed.

I did not know that Kiss Kiss

[Dexter Carr]

was filmed at fiu. Veronica Vega was the lead in the video. If you watch back, Veronica Vegas, the lead before the N Word controversy. Anyways, so, yeah, like, we were just. It was like such a Miami experience, but like, with a big name artist. And I was like, this is fun. Like, I wanna do this and I wanna keep doing this, you know? And like, the other male dancers were from New York and LA and Atlanta. So, like, they were telling me about, like, what it's like over here. So I was like, okay, that's cool. Like, not much different than Miami. Cause I'll say this too. Being from Miami, we got every part. We got like the vacation part. We also got like the industry part. We got the hometown part. Like, you got kind of every part. So it was really cool.

[Kid Fury]

The gaming part? Yeah.

[Dexter Carr]

The Caribbean part. It's the scamming part.

[Kid Fury]

Yeah.

[Dexter Carr]

But yeah, no, it was great. And it was an amazing first experience for me that just made me want to keep going.

[Kid Fury]

So that was one of the things I was going to actually ask you about. Like, Miami has this specific. Like, we have like, specific sources for creativity that we're really good at. And then some shit is just like, girl, this is Miami. We don't do that. Right. So I'm like, I'm not really surprised that in a situation like that, it was a lot of people from other cities.

[Dexter Carr]

Yeah.

[Kid Fury]

So what was the experience like, becoming a dad? Cause how old were you when you did that video?

[Dexter Carr]

16. That was my first job.

[Kid Fury]

I was real young. So what was like the experience post Chris Brown video where you're like, oh, this is my life now.

[Dexter Carr]

Ah, here. Yeah. So, okay, so as we all know, too, maybe you don't know if you're watching this, but Miami doesn't have black jobs. Miami has Latin jobs. So you dance for Pitbull. You dance for Shakira. You dance for somebody's name and somebody's name that you don't even know put together. And that is what we have. So after the Chris Brown, I was on this, like, high, and I'm like, oh, my God. Yeah. And then somehow I ended up in somebody's, like, commercial for, like, you know, a Taco Bell commercial. It's just like, the career went different and I, you know, at the same time, like, am I doing what I love? Yes. But it's not the caliber of where I want to be and the feeling I want to feel when I'm on these jobs. Because also, we can call a spade a spade too. Miami can be a little racist.

[Kid Fury]

Miami can be like, the girls gag at that too, sweetie. It's not just Ocean Drive.

[Dexter Carr]

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's wild out here. And you will be a born and raised resident, and somebody will look at you like you're an outsider. No, no, no. I'm from here, babe. You're not from here. So, yeah, it was a very interesting experience going from that to those other jobs. But also, too, I think those other jobs helped me. Cause once I moved to New York, I was able to say that I had a little more under my resume than just one artist.

[Kid Fury]

A little season.

[Dexter Carr]

A little season. Yeah, yeah. And I could jump on y' all jobs up here too. Like, I can do other stuff other than just what you think I can do, which is hip hop. So, yeah, it was beneficial.

[Kid Fury]

How old were you when you moved to New York?

[Dexter Carr]

18. So I did it, like, right, okay. Yeah.

[Kid Fury]

You can't waste no time. And I do not blame you. No, no, no, no, no.

[Dexter Carr]

Not no leap year. Not no fiu. Not no, like, miam. No, I can't. What are we supposed to do? I gotta go.

[Kid Fury]

So I wanna know about your transition to New York City as someone who was born in Miami, because, baby, it rocked my world.

[Dexter Carr]

Whoop my ass. Whoop my ass good. Jump me like, pull me by my hair.

[Kid Fury]

I think maybe the first year and a half, two years tops, I was sincerely sitting like, y' all have lived like this for your whole lives.

[Dexter Carr]

You do this all the time. By choice. Yeah, by choice.

[Kid Fury]

You don't wanna go nowhere. So what was it like moving to like, to New York City. What was some of the initial. What is it? Culture shock.

[Dexter Carr]

Culture shock.

[Kid Fury]

Boots.

[Dexter Carr]

The space of the living space is the. That was my big. I was telling everybody about that. I was like, no, no, no. Y' all don't understand. Cause I was in a college dorm. But even if you're in a college dorm at a fsu, right, Or a UF or something like that, completely, you're getting, like, an apartment. You're getting this, like, baby, this is it. This is the New York dorm right here. And that's my roommate right there. And I'm like, oh, you're doing a line off the. All right, whatever. It's like, it was so real. It was just so real, so fast. But again, grateful, because at 18 years old, you learn so much. Like, you learn so much. And especially. Cause where we're from, like, yeah, obviously, like, Miami is in, like, this clean city where, like, there's nothing. There's no crime, there's no this, there's no that. But I think the way I was raised, at least I'll say I knew stuff was going on, but my parents raised me to be like, stay out of that. Don't be over there. Don't be over there with them people, you know, who not to be around. But in New York, you don't have no choice. Cause you're put in these situations with people who you are just meeting or. Now I'm in the entertainment industry in New York, where I'm meeting people who, you know, I'm supposed to respect them, but I know that they're kind of crazy, too. Like, it was a whole kind of cluster buck of emotions. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Kid Fury]

And New York's one of those places that people from all over the world move there with a goal and then have different journeys towards that goal that then shift personalities and stuff. Because, again, New York City natives, born and bred are like, when are you going home?

[Dexter Carr]

Literally, get out. Quite literally, get out.

[Kid Fury]

Like, I didn't realize that I was bougie until I moved there. They're like, yeah, sometimes there's a mouse in the house. So what do you want to do?

[Dexter Carr]

You want cold water? You can tell me that water. That heater's gonna just shake all night. Yes. Like, yeah, bitch, put a towel on it. Towel.

[Kid Fury]

But you're right. It was a prime experience in time for me to, like, grow up.

[Dexter Carr]

Yeah.

[Kid Fury]

And learn how to.

[Dexter Carr]

Yes.

[Kid Fury]

Wouldn't change it for shit.

[Dexter Carr]

And I had every bad experience in New York. I had the crazy roommate. I had the roommate. Who didn't like me. I had the roommate who was obsessed. I had the. I did the boyfriend. I did all of it. I just let my ass get whooped. Yeah, you had to.

[Kid Fury]

But you were also at a point working on Broadway. So what was that experience like when

[Dexter Carr]

I got up out the hood? No, again, another random audition. Got an audition for in the Heights. And I was like. You know, I'd heard about the show. It was like the big thing at that time. And it was like this whole thing, and everybody wanted it. And I was like, I'm not gonna get that. Like, that's impossible. Cause even my musical theater experience was in high school in Miami, which is like, you know, we draw one play a year, and I'm the lead. Cause I'm the only one can say nails, you know? But it was, again, a learning experience. Because the first audition, of course, I didn't get it. The second audition got better, I got further. Third audition, finally get it. Like, it was like, again, this is what I want to do. I want to learn. Oh, shit. Just pulling earrings out. I want to learn, like, about this industry, and I want to learn in the field. Like, I want to learn, like, with the good people, too. Like the Emmy Award winners and the Tony Award winners. Like, this is where I want to be. So every strike I had, I just took it as a learning lesson. I never let it get me to a point where I wanted to quit, where I wanted to move home. Like, it got really shitty at times, but it never made me want to go, I'm done with this.

[Kid Fury]

Yeah. So I felt the exact same way. Like, moving up there to write and do comedy, perform comedy. I was like, this versus what? I know I can do this, and I'm not. I'm not going nowhere when it comes to this. So, yeah, I guess we'll just figure

[Dexter Carr]

shit out and the door will open at some point. It has to. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah.

[Kid Fury]

So from. How long were you in New York City before you moved to LA?

[Dexter Carr]

So that was 20. So six years in New York and then moved to LA? Yeah, yeah, six years.

[Kid Fury]

What brought you here? What was the transition about?

[Dexter Carr]

So our show closed. We did Bring it on the Musical, which was the show that they did after in the Heights. And it was the same people, Lynne, Andy, Tom and everybody. And I was like, I could jump in another show and just do the same thing over and over again. Because at that point, I had been doing it and, you know, we had been doing eight shows a week. And I was like, okay. I think I need something else. Cause my brain just kind of works like that. I can't stay to, you know, in one place for too long. So I'm that way too, you know, like, and it's like I'm happy and I love this experience, but I never thought this experience was gonna be my end all. Be all. I didn't think that that was for me. And then a lot of my friends were moving to LA because the things were starting to happen. Like the Rihanna tours were starting to happen and the Britney Spears tours were starting to happen. So I'm like, okay, maybe that's the next thing I'm doing. Like maybe that is. Cause that's what I know. For real. So let's go that route. So yeah, I just decided to make the move.

Yeah.

[Dexter Carr]

And I had the financial backing. Cause I saved so much money doing Broadway. Cause I didn't know what the next check was gonna be. So I was like, don't be out here buying no Louis bags or don't be out here buying this. Like, save your money.

[Kid Fury]

So very, very smart, you know, Listen to that advice at home, kids.

[Dexter Carr]

For real.

[Kid Fury]

It's especially for real today. Cause what this is the AI robot just about to come in our house

and just take and take over everything

you like, literally just on some hood shit. The robot go walk inside and be like, run the jewels.

Yeah. So when did you start teaching?

[Dexter Carr]

Mm, so I was in LA for a couple years, three, four years before I started teaching. Just cause like I kind of want to get my feet wet and like have some experience under my belt as far as jobs go so that I could have something to teach. Because even in Miami I didn't really teach in New York. I taught like maybe once, honestly. So I never really taught like that like that, but maybe once or twice. Yeah. But in la I was so inspired by, I think the people around me too. Because I'll say this. New York had the best training, but LA has the best dancers. Like the performance, the aesthetic, what they give, what they do, who they are. It's like out here is the cream of the crop. I will say that. So I was inspired by so many people. So I was just like, yeah, I might as well just teach like, see what it is.

[Kid Fury]

What were some of the like fun jobs and memories of work that you had when you moved out here? Fun jobs first.

[Dexter Carr]

Fun jobs, fun jobs. So I did a lot of like the like the shirtless, like oiled up body male dancer jobs, like you know, the J. Los, the Katy Perrys. Like that whole thing, just hot male dancer jobs, that was my thing. So we weren't even really dancing like that, but we could hold a nasty pose, you know what I mean? That was.

I fully recognize you. Like, you can see all the pop girls have had these guys. Yes, 1,000%.

[Dexter Carr]

And we just placed right off the shoulder. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Kid Fury]

That's fierce.

[Dexter Carr]

But you know, we had fun and it was like such a. And the crazy part about it is the people you're watching are so talented, whether you could see what they could do or not. But like, it was so good being around those kind of guys because they were different from the ones in New York. Cause the ones in New York are niggas. Like, the bro in New York, and then the hood in New York and then the ex boyfriend that I should never date in New York. Like, I should. I have all these different things to pull from it can. I just feel like it can go so many different places, But I think the only thing I do want people to get from it is a real place. Like, a real authentic place. I never want you to watch anything that I do and go, oh, what were you feeling today? It should be obvious. You know what I mean? It should be very clear. Like, oh, yeah, you were feeling this. You were feeling this, you were feeling like this. Like, I want that every time you see it to feel authentic.

And I choose a lot of different types of music just because I never want to get stuck in a box of only being able to create to one type of thing.

And then I think that's where the Ariana Grande combo came out that people fuck with. So heavy. Cause I was just like, these are two songs that people love. Put it together.

People in New York are a lot more grounded. Obviously they have a better sense of reality. I feel like they're not trying to like, go have a different career every week. Like, the boys in LA beats it into them. You know, they kind of know where they're going. Their trajectory is kind of their trajectory. So, like, you can build a life easier, but the environment doesn't allow you to do that. For me, that's what it was like. I knew I wasn't going to stay here forever. So I don't know if I want to build something with you forever here, because I'm not staying here.

What was that experience like? Cause I feel like dating creatives. Dating creatives is a ticking time bomb.

What? We fought in an elevator. Solange, for real. Like, we fought in an elevator. Like, it was bad. It was bad and it was a. Okay. And I know dancers who date dancers. Like, I actually know a lot of dancer couples. But I view dance, I think, a little differently than some people view dance in the professional space in the sense of this needs to not only pay my bills, but it needs to fulfill me in a way that I'm cool not doing anything else. And also too dance, to me, has now become a brand. Like, it's past just dancing for this artist or this artist or this artist. Like, once I decided to make a name for myself, I now have to look at that. I need to make sure I'm doing the right things, being associated with the right people, going to the right events it's just a different level of it at that point. So at the time when I dated this dancer, I was doing that. I was doing that move of trying to get in a space, of not just being a backup dancer, but having a name as a dancer. And they were in the trenches of being a backup dancer. They were, oh my God, this artist touched me on the shoulder today and I was so happy about it. And I was like, but y' all been on set since like 6am and it's now midnight like this. Like, I was trying to explain to them too, like, you know, you gotta put yourself in certain positions that you don't end up on these kind of jobs that are gonna treat you any which way. Like, there is also like a tier of jobs, like, you know what I mean? Like, you can either do these where they pay you $250 for a music video and they'll be an A list artist too. But it's just, that's what they pay you. Or you're getting a union job and you're getting your agent to make sure you're represented correctly.

And the dancer that I was dating just, he was just down for whatever. He was down to do whatever and kind of be associated with whatever because he just wanted to. He just wanted to dance. He just wanted to dance. And that was the hardest part for me because I don't want to change you. I don't want to tell you what you should, shouldn't be doing, but at the same time, like, I can't do it with you and I can't be here with you and I gotta, I gotta go.

I think there's just a fine line with that, especially if you are. You're both in the same creative field pretty much my thought behind it is that you have to be like, at a certain level of spiritual connection. That's what it was, an emotional connection. Because I know there are plenty of couples. Like, we're both comedian and we thrive together, we work together, we write together.

And I'll even say, too for the arts. I do think you even need to be at the same financial. Because in our careers in the creative space, there's difference. Like there's people who, you know, do really well in this field or there's people who are trying to get up there in this field. And I don't know if two people that are on opposite ends of the spectrum, it's not gonna. I don't know. I don't know. Maybe that's the gay thing. I don't know, I don't know.

I don't even think that it is. I feel like it's. In situations like that, it has to be incredibly easy to build resentment or take any little thing the wrong way or to. I think a lot of time in situations like that, even sometimes when people don't do the same thing, but you just on two different places. When it comes to financial stability or comfort, some people just have an unspoken pressure they put on themselves and then they start to resent the other person because it's like, well, I'm so frustrated with myself. Even though you're good to me, but I'm upset with you because I feel like we should be on. Even.

On even planes, whatever. And for the thing. For the dancer thing, a lot of people have to think about it this way too. Let's say I'm dating somebody that's a dancer. The opportunity that I got, he also could have gotten. But he didn't. Because if we're being honest, we're on the same playing field. We're just in two different leagues. That's the thing. So that's where it got kind of messy, I think. I also want to learn something about somebody else that I don't know. I want to learn about a new fe. I want to learn about a new career. I want to learn about a new passion. I want to learn about somebody that has. Comes from a different country. Like, I want to learn. So with a partner, being in the same field, it just doesn't excite me. I don't know.

Like, truly to be progressive. And also, I like to drive around. Cause being from Miami, that's all we do. We'll drive from all the way down south to North Miami beach and then come back, like, literally, just because.
