Why did you do something so responsible?

So I have been listening to you for. Since 2017. I actually started listening to the read because I was living in New Hampshire because I'm stupid and I was. So I went to school to be an actor. So I got an acting job in New Hampshire. Worst time of my life. And I don't know where that is. The depression and the sad. Like I was sitting in the shower. Sad, like that's the category of sad. And so I would play the reed, like just all day. So That I didn't have to hear my own thoughts. I feel you, you know, and so when my manager reached out work and you said yes, and I was like,

you know, that exist.

[Thought Squad]

I was like. I'm like, okay, okay. Act like you've been somewhere. Act like, you know, like you're a regular person. Don't act too parasocial. Because I was like, in my head, I was like. Because they always talk about. They hate when people are, like, too excited to see them. So I'm just going to act.

It's just regular.

Okay. So I'm like, I'm just going to be very calm. So we actually. We drove out here. Oh, wow. Yeah, we. We hopped in the car.

Like, it didn't make no damn sense. And here's the thing. No, I'm not going to go into my thoughts on spirit because they have not paid me to give the thoughts. But we are often on a spirit flight. And so I was like. So we were like, we can either drive or we can spend $4,000. And so what we ended up doing, we turned into, like a vacation room. Yeah. So we came out here, we saw people, the developers from the video game. We went out to dinner. We went to the Comedy Store. We. Yesterday I had an audition, and my agent is in Los Angeles, so we went to do that. We went to Venice Beach. We got married in Venice. Oh, on this beach? Yeah. Well, we got married on Santa Monica. They told us that those are two different sands. And so we. We just turned it into, like a little vacation thing that just has the added bonus of being on this podcast.

I'm glad to hear that the drive out here was for more than just this raggedy ghetto ass podcast. You're really just getting, you know, fruits of the city while you're here. Why is it that everyone from Michigan is so cool and funny? All the black people?

[Thought Squad]

I think the answer is trauma. And. And the cold. And the D. And the D. Trauma, the cold, the D. And we're surrounded by great Lakes. So since we're surrounded by greatness, we have to be great. And I think that's why, because, yeah, all the black people of Michigan are truly their own special breed of stupid. But not stupid like you. So stupid like it's our own special. I'm happy to be from there.

That's why we connect so much. Black people from Florida is the same thing. And we all love Trina because.

Because when you're from Michigan, like, I'm be like, yes, I am from Flint. Flint. Because most of most of Florida, most of Michigan, they next is Scarlet. Okay. And so I am from Flint. Or people be like, I am from Detroit, not any of these surrounding places like that. It's very similar with. With you and Miami.

Thank you very much. So where did you get. I want to talk about your name. Thought Squad. Yeah, why?

So I tell people my name is Squad. I am one person. But if you're down with the music and down with movement, you can be in the squad work. And it actually came because my husband over there, who I affectionately on stage call white man.

Yes, that is what he is. I'll be like, play the song, White man. And then you play the song. If you don't play the song, then everybody gets to see a race war that day. And so win.

We. He always made music. He was working at this studio before COVID He was working at this studio that like Eminem came out of there, Funkadelic came out of there, Clark Sisters recorded there. Anything that's not Motown and Big from Detroit has gone through studio at some point. And so I was like, make me a city girl. I want to. I want to be a one hit wonder. I just want one good song to just make me go viral and I can live my life. And he was like, girl, no, this is my real job. What the. No. And so then CO came. I was like, you ain't got nothing else to do? Ain't got nothing else to do. So we made a few songs, A few dumb songs. I was like, what do you even call this? And his friend group, like text chat him and the boys was called Thought Swat. I was like, that sounds dumb. Let's do it. And so it went from this dumb thing to this real thing in like a matter of months. And so now here I am fighting and squatting.

I always wonder what. What allows an artist or inspires them to. To shift the caps around. Some people do like all lowercase, maybe with a period at the end. So like, what was decision for you to make it all caps? Is it like I'm supposed to say, like Thought Squad? Like, is it like a way that you say It.

I think that the all caps was first just like a way to stand out, but also, it's like it's in your face. Like, we are here. I am right here, and you can't get around me. You can't pretend like you didn't see it. It's like ta squad right here, right now.

Love it. Okay, I want to talk about your music. I want to admit that I was quite pleased to hear that you wanted to be on the program. I heard your music quite a while ago. My intro to you was. My intro to you was abandoned him.

And I just turned this track up to 10 and let it play again. That boy is not your friend. You can't abandon him. If anybody knows anything about me, abandoning men is just my favorite thing to do. Talk about perpetuate fund. So I had an immediate connection with that record. You know what I'm saying? Feet to the fart to the far.

What are, like, your musical inspirations? Because you're so. I mean, I feel like sometimes it's kind of like, cliche to say, oh, you're so unique, but, like, you're. Your music is genuinely one of a kind. Nobody else is making it. What inspires you?

What inspires me? Definitely. You already know Missy Elliot. Top of the list, mother of goats, drag queens in general. Very inspirational. Funkadelic, Parliament. Very, like, Detroit funky sound.

Just anybody who's been like, carving their own lane, I take note and I'm like, okay, this is fantastic. Like, there's so many little artists that I follow. Like, and not little. Like, you're so cute. You get started now. Like, no, it's like they just haven't gotten their shine yet. That I'm like, this is crazy. Crazy. Like, how did you even make this happen? Stuff like that. So, yeah, I would say those are, like, now, like, more recently. Definitely a Dochi. Definitely a Duran Bernard. Like, just people who are like, this is the way I want to make my art. And I know nobody else is doing it like that. And that doesn't scare me.

Yeah, that's beautiful because I was saying that to just 10 when he was here not long ago. Like, that's a part of the thing that really allows the people who view you and listen to be like, oh, let me go be me on my own terms. Because this person does. And they're celebrated for it. They're doing it so well, even when we're not so sure. I mean, you could be like a Babbage performer who's never nervous. But most of us, when it comes to our art and things we create, are, you know, sometimes anxious about how people are going to receive it. So you gotta imagine the people that you do touch. Like, I don't know if anybody would care or see this, whatever. So you really empower people in that way. Plus, the music is fun and addictive and you shit on men all of the time.

Okay. I don't know why she says yes. So we made pound cake and we were like, oh, it'd be fun. Get grandma in the video in the kitchen. We thought it was just going to be a one time thing. Pound cake is what let me quit my job at that nonprofit. I hate it.

Because she was just kind of just sitting in her chair, you know, just being a little grouchy old white woman. And she'll now she's like, are we doing a video? Are we gonna do a. Are we gonna do a picture? Call it a picture. Are we gonna do a picture today, one of your pictures? And then if we go a long time not making them, she's just, I guess grandma's not in the video. I'm like, come on, Grandma, let's. Come on, get your ski mask, girl. Let's do something.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I've seen the comments. They're very much like, ugh, happy to have her back. Yes. And I get it. Yes, I get it. You're putting a balaclava on grandma's face and rapping about how only whack niggas don't lick booty halls. Yeah. That is an amazing and true piece of a lyric.

I am just here to speak the truth. Arab Belafonte told me this is okay. I was about to be very hyperbolic. But in real life, Gary Belafonte told me because in the past life I was a youth poet. But like not in a. Not in the back. I was youth poet. So it's cool when the youth do it. Yeah, when 50 year old men do it. I'm like, why are we here? But anyways, make a long story short, my youth poetry team was invited to this thing Harry Belafonte was doing. And he told me artists are the gatekeepers of truth because that's what Martin Luther King Jr. Told him. And so, well, I was about to relate that to only Whack n Don't lick Booty hole. But you know, it's also the truth.

I didn't hear anything out of Republic there. I just heard facts.

This leads me to a perfect segue, which is that you have a very clear sense of humor and it just kind of reverberates through pretty much everything that you make from your music itself to the clips that you make. They're just so funny. I'm always excited to see what you're gonna come up with next in these clips because the song is going to be delightful and the footage is like, how do you incorporate your humor into your art? Or do you even consider it? Or just.

Oh, I love, love, love making references and punch lines. Some people are like, no, I need to be hard all the time. But like, I'm the person when like there's serious stuff going on. Like, perfect example, my friend got in a whole car accident. The car flipped over three times. She was fine. This was a few years ago. She's fine, everything's fine. But she called me because this is when we were in Atlanta and so she didn't have nobody else to call, so she called me. I left Workout Rush over there. I'm like, girl, why you in the car flipping? Why are you doing a kick flip on the car, girl? And she's like, oh, it hurt, the laugh. Like, that's me. I'm always trying to find a joke in a thing because life is too this, this speck of a planet that we are on. There's too much going on where like I got to laugh. I gotta find some humor in it somewhere. So going from when I started, I wanted to make. When I wanted to do my one hit wonder, I wanted to make a Jesus is the one Zack Fox. Like, I was like, what is that version of that?

Okay.

And then it's kind of morphed into. Now I have something to say. But I keep that sense of humor in it, because if we can't laugh at, like, what's going on in the world or whatever, we're gonna be miserable.

Yeah. Literally. Literally, yes.

And laughter is medicine. Like, when you get flipped over and backflip. Whatever the Raven Simone song was called, when you do all of that in your car. I personally would want my homie to come over and make me laugh.

I can't stand it. I'm in bed resting it.

Honey, can I get you anything? My dad and I have this joke where he keeps. My dad is, like, almost 70, and he's like, yeah, I'm gonna get. I'm get my hair locked up. I'm get my hair locked up. My mom is like, absolutely. Now. I was like, no, I'm gonna get you a man wig, dad. And let me tell you something. This man decided one day, two strokes is what he wanted to have. And I was like, not just one dad, too. He's fine. Everything's fine. And what. I brought him in the hospital. You know, people bring flowers and stuff. I brought him the man wig. I made him on a wig head. And I was like, I put this right here next to. To the get well card so you can have something to look at, so you can be. You can. You can feel encouraged.

Oh, he loved it. My mom said, okay, girl. But my dad.

I'm not paying Joe Biden back because I have so many student loans. And legally, on the record, I'm looking at all the cameras. On the record, I can't pay Joe Biden back because he's not the president. You know, these student loans that I have, those came during the Biden era. And so I. I physically and literally can't pay him back. Paying other. Paying them back in general in life. That's up to Jesus. Yeah, Jesus, If. If the Lord says, girl, give the government their money back, then I'll be like, okay, Jesus. But he hasn't spoken to me in that.

Yeah. So I have a degree in French, my bachelor's Degree. I have a dual degree in theater and French. When I was in middle school, my middle school was my high school, and they changed it to where you have to take a foreign language. Oh, my God.

Yeah, my school did that, too.

Yeah. From eighth grade until I graduated, I took French, and I was like, well, I guess keep going. So I can read French very well. I can translate what's on a page very well. If you wanted to have a conversation with me, I would be so slow. I would be like, bonjour, Je ma pel. Fat squad. Common. Tallez vous.

Like, I know. Croissant, croissant, croissant. I can't even do that. It's really ridiculous. So I'm still impressed. I speak English, and I can speak Jamaican patois, which is just English.

And so I am excited to look in people's faces and say, thank you so much. Because what I say at the show is like, you know, celebrities, like, I couldn't do it without the fans. I was like, no, if y' all didn't buy no tickets, I couldn't Put gas in the car to. To get to wherever. San Diego or wherever, you know. So, like, I love that. I love hearing stories. I. This is. Loved the demo. Of course. Favorite character. Prism. This was before I knew that you were voicing her. And then I don't think you. What episode did Pound Cake play at the end?

Okay. So that is when the episode ended. And I heard it. And I was like, wait, wait a minute. I was so excited. I felt like when I saw just 10 in the trailer for Is God Is. There's just something about not even having, like, met you, not even knowing that you knew who I was. I felt excited and proud because I'm like, look at us just permeating through all of the damn spaces and things like this on top of it. I already loved this character. I just. I was a huge fan. So I want to know how that came about. How did you get into a video game?

[Thought Squad]

So the main. I don't know what his. What his real job title. The main guy, his name is Pierre Charette, and he was wolf among us, was a telltale man. He just sent us, or he had his people send us an email. He said that he was just scrolling. He was already a thought squad fan on the Internet and was like, I wonder if she does acting now. We got this email and was like, hey, you know, we're making a video game and we have a character. I was like, these Nigerian princes are getting so good. Like, this English is impeccable. You haven't even said anything about the gold yet. And then we. We looked more into it. It's like, oh, this is legit. And so we had a couple zoom meetings. And then I was going to be out here in LA for another thing. So I was like, oh, can we do the audition this time? We did. And I just turned into the first voice session. Like, it. They found me. I did not find them. Like, voice acting wasn't even on my ra Like I told you. I was for the stage Broadway, you know, And I love. I love this world, this. This voice act. Because I. I'm a cartoon person. I wrote. What is it called? Papers in history class when they let us, like, kind of do what we want. It was about, like, cartoons. Like cartoons of the 1920s and, you know, so being able to be in this, it blew my mind just seeing how everything works. And because we recorded everything else in Michigan, so going back and forth and is fantastic.

I noticed that Prism has a couple things in common with you. It says she's from Flint, Michigan, pop star. How much of those traits and those parts of her were pulled directly from. Because it feels like a lot of Prism was just kind of inspired by you.

[Thought Squad]

Yeah. I think that it became. This is not on. It's on the record, but it's not like nobody said this out loud. This is my inferences. I think that they had the Prism character in mind, and then as I put more personality into it, they fed off of that for more of the character. So, of course, the Flint, Michigan thing, she was already a pop star when they came to me. But, like, her personality, her quirks and the kinds of things that she says, I think, like, from what I was bringing, it allowed us to, like, build that character further.

Yeah. Because for those of you who don't know, Dispatch is a video game that's told. It's an episodic sort of superhero sitcom where you play a dispatcher for superheroes. And one of the mechanics, when you're Sending out the heroes and stuff. They usually will say, like, something before they go do their thing. And Prism has all of these lines that would make me crack up laughing out loud, even if it was just, like, a little short thing. And again, I played the demo. I played the first episode, and this was before I knew it was you. So then when I knew it was you, I was like, okay, this makes all the sense in the world. She was already my favorite work. The whole. The powers light manipulation.

Listen, I. Cause I didn't know what she was really working with until, you know, because they did a Tom Holland on me. I didn't know nothing that was going on until I saw it and I was playing it, and so I was like, ooh, wait a minute. I'm getting it. I'm saving the day. She's that girl.

But this. This past tours, we just MIA my husband in the car driving across America, and that's when we get to sit down and just talk to each other, because ain't nothing else to do in the car. So I'd say, like, that's. That. That's when we're the most married, is when we're at home and, oh, we got to go to the studio and we got to record this. We got to get the music video done. That's when it's like, my love, it's like, you're. You're so far away, but you're so close. Yeah, but when we're on the road, it's very. We got married in 2024 on Venice beach, like I said before, or Santa Monica. And ever since then, because, like, when we got married, then some more things just started, like, popping, popping more, popping more, popping more. And so there's nobody in this world. I. I would not be. I literally would not be doing this if my husband wasn't who my husband was. If I made two stupider decisions in my life, I would still Be at the non profit that I hate. And so in our vows, which I came off the dome with it, I said something about life is like all these different puzzles and you know, puzzles, they're all cut the same. So like a piece might fit, but it, it don't go with the whole picture.

And that is if you can make one thing trend worldwide, what would it be?

If I could make one thing trend worldwide is for people to be more childish. And the way that. I mean that is. I always say, if adults acted the way we tell kids to act, the world would be a better place. Sharing empathy, using kind words, keeping your hands to yourself. Hands to yourself. Like, literally all the stuff that we tell kids, y' all not doing.

Cause, like, so I used to be, like, I said I was a substitute. Now I was substitute teacher for, like, seven years after I graduated high school. And what high school? Well, college. And what I. I've done every grade I've done infants to high to high school seniors. And what I've seen is, like, the kids weren't the problem. When, like, working, like, kids gonna be kids. The people. When I'm like, who Chalet is? It's the adults.

Yes.

[Thought Squad]

Because it's like, the pettiness and the egos. And because. So when I. Because I looked so young, the way that an adult would talk to me and then they find out I'm grown, they. It all shifts. You know what I mean? So it's like, if you just treated everybody like we tell these kids to, because I don't know when it falls off the. The respect and caring. I know. I know this is going long, but, like, my niece, Toot, her name is Chloe. I call her Toot. I have a friend who was trans, and we all went to the movies together. And my friend said something, and Toot was like, ha. He said this and this. I was like, she. Chloe, okay, she said this and that was it.

Exactly.

And it's like. It's not like your mama called you this. Like, why. You know what I mean? So that's what I would make. Tren.

We get to adult age, a lot of us, and we kind of resent, I guess, like, the generation before us. We kind of almost look back on childhood in a way. And it. I think sometimes it creates this, like, anxiety or just this stuffiness that we then pass down to children, whether it's conscious or, you know, subconscious. And that's why I love what you're saying. This is why I have video games. This is why I have a katana. This is why I have several action figures and toys, because that's what my inner child wants. And it is freeing to come up from a bubble or come out of the bubble every now and then and just be a kid for just a couple hours, couple days out the week. But you really just gagged me. You gagged me. We could tell if we could have adults behave the way that we tell kids to behave. My God.

I mean, the president is a giant baby, so, you know. But, like, no one told him how to act at all.

Listen, we gonna. Let me tell you something. Let me tell y' all something about grandma. She can't stand doctor work. She hate that man with a passion in her very be. She'll be like, they gonna come take this old lady. She'll be like. Like, we have to turn off the news in the house. Like that. Like, girl, you are strictly Hallmark from now on. Because she gets so mad, and she'll be like, I just can't stand that.

That trip.

I should go up to him and just be like, hi, I'm just the old lady. And then, bam. My grandma.

That is exactly what I want to hear. Yeah, because I guess army grandma, I'd definitely be watching news like, ooh, I hate this bitch so bad. I wish he would just fall down these. God, why he got to go up and down that goddamn jet bridge and just make him trip?
