Three teams are aiming for two spots. The math shows that only two of the three will get a place, and one will be unhappy. The gravity of this situation is remarkable. Notre Dame got the wrong end of the deal Sunday morning as they and BYU are left out of the Playoff. Once again, ESPN got its way (as it so often does ;). Let me preface by saying good luck to a road team playing a night game at Lavell Edwards Stadium. BYU is often called the “Vampire Cougs” for a reason – they win home games. TCU was the latest victim on Saturday night, as the Cougs outplayed them. It was BYU’s most complete game of the year – all three facets of the game (Offense, Defense, Special Teams) were red-hot. BYU looks to carry its momentum in a big road game vs Cincinnati. Although the CFP Committee disrespects them, BYU still controls its own destiny. Winning out would earn them a Big 12 championship, which would secure a spot in the College Football Playoff. The playoff race is a mess following Oklahoma’s upset of #4 Alabama. Let me tell you a story about two football teams. Separated by just 42 miles, they are highly competitive. Although they don’t like to admit it, they are very similar in many ways. Each time they battle, it’s a close game. The fanbases behind these two teams hate each other. The “Team down south” had lost nine straight games head-to-head until they broke that streak in 2021. Now, imagine in 2025, Big Noon Kickoff takes its show to Provo as if the tensions weren’t high enough. BYU is the winning team on a 3-game win streak with official bragging rights for another year. In a game where BYU was supposed to lose, they refused to go down. Bear Bachmeier led a fourth-quarter Cougar comeback to force overtime! He looked like a true freshman, but redeemed himself late in the game. They made the plays they had to win, and came back down double digits in the fourth quarter for the first time since 2015. They improve to 6-0 and now face their toughest opponent yet, who happens to be their archrival, the Utah Utes. There is so much history and bad blood between the “team up north” and the “team down south”. It is a rivalry dating back to 1922, marked by countless one-score games and wild finishes. BYU has won the last two and looks to make it three this Saturday! This game will award the winner an inside track to the #2 seed in the Big 12 Championship race. Many teams fly under the radar, but few do it as well as BYU. After starting the season as a “lost cause” due to Jake Retzlaff transferring, everyone crossed off the Cougars from their ballot. However, we’re six weeks in, and the Cougars show no sign of slowing from last year’s performances. They have exceeded expectations and got their true freshman QB, Bear Bachmeier, up to speed in just 5 games. He threw for 351 yards and ran for a touchdown in a dominant win over West Virginia, and they are looking to win this weekend in Tucson. The next six games for BYU will be difficult to navigate. Each of the opponents is currently 4-1 or better and showcasing talented quarterback play. The Big 12 race is still very much open, as per usual.
