Here is your Flashlight King Fireworks Commissioner and the keeper of Common sense, your mayor, Joe Susherer. Before I share with you the shock of electric vehicle drivers. By the way, I didn't see many electrical vehicles down south either. I have two emails regarding what I was mentioning the other day about how it felt different in South Carolina from here. This one is from Mike Vaske, who writes, I was listening to the May 11th Columbia, South Carolina episode and you brought up the way it felt different. I took a road trip to Fayetteville, Arkansas the first week of April to get away and ride my bike. A real bike, not a motorcycle in warm weather. The weather was fantastic, 60s and sunny. The Razorback Greenway runs through Fayetteville to Bentonville, about 35 miles. I should mention Bentonville as the headquarters for Walmart. I met several riders along the way. All were in good spirits and quite friendly. I would call the people nice. Not Minnesota nice, but genuinely nice. Minnesota nice is a myth. By the way, I was taking pictures of Lake Fayetteville when two couples started up a conversation. They gave me some ideas for lunch, took a picture of me standing by an old open lake in early April, and they laughed at me when I told them about your Ice out updates. The hotel was really clean. The employees were polite almost to a fault. It took me a while, but I realized they just wanted me to enjoy their city. They are proud of their city, the university. Heck, they're really proud of their state. I walked into a Walmart to see if they would mind if I park my car in their lot for a while. When I was on my ride, the manager asked me what kind of car and what color and told me to enjoy the ride. I When I got back, I figured I would get my bride a Razorback T shirt for her birthday because I always go all out. The store was immaculate. Not just clean, but spotless. All the shelves were stocked. Customers were nice. Again, not Minnesota nice, but really nice. Holding the freezer door open, for example, and I was grabbing an ice cream. I made a comment to the guy in charge of the Razorback apparel yes, there is someone in charge of that. How clean the store was. His reply was they were only a half hour away from their headquarters and they never know when someone from corporate might stop in. Maybe think, how come if I happen to stop into a Target, it's never that clean? Target headquarters is here in Minnesota. Don't the Target stores have to worry about someone from corporate stopping in so many things just had a different feel. I never felt like I was in an area I should not be, never felt unsafe. As far as I know, I never got the finger. It was a wonderful break to get away from the cold. All right, thank you.
Kenny Olson
What town was that?
Joe Soucheray
Fayetteville, Arkansas. Here's Lanny Stapp writes Joe, I was listening to your recent South Carolina trip experience and it compelled me to comment. My wife and I moved to North Georgia from Minnesota 10 years ago. We live about 60 miles north of Atlanta in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about three hours from Columbia, South Carolina. I grew up in Minnesota and summered on the east shore of Turtle Lake in Shoreview. Now retired. Here are some cultural and financial facts. Culture when we first registered to vote, we were Asked for two forms of picture id. We only had our driver's license. The kindly older lady said, don't you have your carry permit with you? Can you imagine that here? Can you imagine that never would be spoken? Attending my grandson's high school graduation ceremony, the county public school was interesting. The district super made these remarks in his speech. If you're wondering where to look for guidance for your life's next steps, the Bible might be a good place to start public school. The audience applauded. There was no pushback. Financial In Georgia, retiree income is not taxed. This includes Social Security, pensions, IRA and 401k. Our income is slightly over hundred grand annually and we pay no state income tax. Residents age 75 and older are exempted from school property taxes in our county. Our property tax in 2024 was twelve hundred dollars on our home with a market value assessed at nine hundred thousand.
Kenny Olson
Wait a minute.
Joe Soucheray
I went to say that part again. Their property taxes were 1200 bucks. Their home is valued at 900.
Kenny Olson
Fantastic.
Joe Soucheray
When I went to city hall late last year, taxes are due in December year to pay our property tax. I was told by the clerk, congratulations, sweetheart, you owe no property tax this year. I was astounded and asked why. I was told that the exemption formulas had changed and I now had enough credits to offset our tax bill. With the exception of new car purchases, vehicle license renewal tabs are 20 bucks for all vehicles, regardless of age or value. I could go on and on, but just wanted to share our real world experience confirms your initial gut instincts from your Southeast trip. There is a difference here and things work. Those are some of the most sobering statistics I've ever heard. Speaking of license tab fees, Kenny alerted me to this. I didn't see it. I take it this is an online Star Tribune store?
Kenny Olson
Yeah, yeah, I discovered it online this morning.
Joe Soucheray
When Michael Anschel bought an all electric luxury sedan last year for his company, he knew it would be an expensive purchase. The BMW i7, even the used 2023 model he chose came with a hefty price tag, roughly 100 grand. But Anschel, who lives in Minneapolis and owns a local architecture firm, was drawn to the prospect of saving thousands of dollars each year on fuel while also helping Mother Earth. Ultimately, Anshell believed the car was a worthwhile investment. Then he saw the bill for his tab renewals just this past month. What do you think his tab was on? A used BMW electric i7.
Chris Reivers
Sorry, what year? What year?
Joe Soucheray
It's a 2023. He got a used one a 20, 232 year old, 3 year old BMW
Chris Reivers
electric SUV, 650 bucks.
Joe Soucheray
John Height.
John Height
Well, I'm looking at the story.
Joe Soucheray
Okay, never mind. Kenny saw the story. Rook.
Gabriel
I was gonna say 7.
Joe Soucheray
700.
Gabriel
Yeah.
Joe Soucheray
Gabe, you want to venture you have an electric car. I want to say $802,496.25.
Gabriel
I'm blurting.
Joe Soucheray
Nearly $600 of that fee was due to the car being electric.
Gabriel
What?
Joe Soucheray
I was blown away. He told the Star Tribune. It's like four or five months of buying gas. I think some of these people thought maybe their virtue would allow them to escape taxes.
Kenny Olson
Oh, if you read on, that's exactly what they think.
Joe Soucheray
As more Minnesotans purchase EVs, the sticker shock of a newly restructured license fee has some drivers feeling like they're being punished for their choice to go electric. That perception potentially threatens a market that has already taken some major hits, including the early retirement of the federal tax incentives last fall. And I was glad to see those ended. Why did I have any obligation to accommodate your purchase of a vehicle? I don't care what kind of car you buy. But it's like a sexual affirming haircut. Why in the hell do I have to pay for it? Updates made to the state's vehicle registration fees last year and in 2023 aim to fill a decades long decline in gas tax revenue. See, it will never occur this state to not spend more. And it never occurred to this state to adjust its spending to reflect a decline in gas tax revenue. What this state did is figure out a way to just keep the taxes flowing. Some EV drivers say now much of that burden is being placed on them. Amschel and other drivers who spoke with the Star Tribune said they felt blindsided by the high fees, which they believe discouraged Minnesotans from adopting a technology that could help the state achieve its environmental. Well, first of all, Anschel, you know, I'm sorry for your bill there, that's outrageous. But an electric vehicle will do nothing to change the environment. You have to plug your car in, Anchell, and then that power plant needs to be run by great amounts of energy. And Anshell, you haven't seen anything yet. Once AI takes over your architectural firm, I don't wish that for you, sir. Once AI takes over your architectural firm, we're going to need three or four of these, these electric farms just to supply the electricity, the computers. I wonder where that energy's gonna come from. But you can drive by them in your electric car and say you're doing a hell of a job for the earth. It was wildly disproportionate amount that we're being asked to contribute to roadway maintenance and bridge repair, anshell said. I wasn't expecting to get dinged for having made what I thought was a better chase for my community choice for my community. Are you that naive, pal? Holy mackerel. Minnesota has seen a steady decline in tax revenue for decades. And let me add again. And the state won't do anything to adjust downward. This state, which has been ruined, is just taxing more, right? The shortfall has forced lawmakers to pull funding from other areas to repair the state's roads and bridges. Imagine how much roads we could have fixed without the billions and billions of dollars stolen from us. A 2023 state report projected that Minnesota will face a transportation shortfall of 15 to 20 billion over the next 20 years because we elect people who are worried about Palestine, they're not worried about our roads. To narrow the gap, state lawmakers raised the gas tax in 2023 from 28.5 cents a gallon to 31.8 cents a gallon. I won't read you. This whole thing is. Am I missing some good stuff, Kenny?
Kenny Olson
The whole thing is delightful, folks. You gotta go out of your way to find this. If you need a good laugh. If you need to cheer up, read this piece.
Joe Soucheray
The EV surcharge is expected to bring in an additional 40 million over the next three to four years. For Edina resident Sonia Anderson, the new policies met a 1,456 doll for new tabs. 300 of that from the EV surcharge. I was like, oh my gosh, I've got to come up with $1,400. Oh, that is amazing. Minnesota has long based registration and tab renewal fees on a car's original price tag. New cars are subject to higher fees, with the amount dropping each year as the car ages. Well, we've even taken care of that, haven't we? Yeah, we changed the rate of depreciation. We don't even count depreciation anymore. Your car, to a legislative member in this state, is always new. The state based its rates on an assumption that new cars lost 10% of their original value each year. Now the state says, nah, you're only losing 5% of it for the first three years, then 10% in the following years. The adjustment means that Anderson's fees for her 2023 model were calculated at 90% of the car's suggested retail price. When new is it? Yeah, we can't even keep up with the ways we're being fleeced in this state.
Kenny Olson
That's the one point where I kind of feel badly for them.
Joe Soucheray
So do I.
Kenny Olson
This Anchill guy let me find the number. His tabs were $2,496. 600 of that fee was due to the car being electric. Okay, so you. Minus 2400. Minus 600. What's that give you? 1800. That's still way, way, way too high. Way too high.
Joe Soucheray
The change in depreciation hits EV drivers differently.
Kenny Olson
Yeah, it does.
Joe Soucheray
Recent reports have shown that EVs tend to depreciate faster than their gas counterparts, largely due to a smaller market and quick advancements in technology. One recent report. I hate when reporters say that. What was the report?
Kenny Olson
Name it.
Joe Soucheray
One recent report found that EVs lost 13% more value than gas cars over a five year period. Anderson paid $50,000 for her car last year, but the state treated the tab renewal as if the car were worth 64,000. That's outrageous.
John Height
The story does link you to the
Joe Soucheray
report, just so you know. Oh, good. Is that why it's underlined?
Gabriel
Yes.
Joe Soucheray
Oh, good.
Kenny Olson
Yeah, hold on.
Joe Soucheray
Look.
Kenny Olson
Did you follow that link, John?
John Height
Yeah.
Joe Soucheray
What was the report?
John Height
It's from cnbc. From Robert Ferris, who appears to be like a Financial reporter.
Joe Soucheray
Kevin McDonald first learned of the EV surcharge this spring when he got a $900 bill to renew the tabs of his 2023 Hyundai Ioniq. Confused, he logged onto an online forum for EV owners in Minnesota to seek more information. His post blew up with dozens of other EV drivers sharing frustration over their own bills, which range anywhere from 500 to 2,500. Some complained that their electric vehicle surcharge was far more than what an average Minnesota driver pays in gas tax revenue. Can I tell you something, EV drivers? I don't care that you drive one. That's your choice. But you're going to pay more in tabs. And the increase in gas prices are
Kenny Olson
going to cost you.
Joe Soucheray
Right? You know, that's amazing.
Gabriel
They're going to get you no matter what.
Kenny Olson
And you have to pay. Unless you plug in in a public area.
Joe Soucheray
No. I bet.
Kenny Olson
Do you have to pay for electricity in a public area, in a, in a parking lot, or is that in
Joe Soucheray
this state there would be a way that we'd have to pay for it?
Chris Reivers
I can answer that, Ken. I was at an establishment that I did see a guy using a card to pay for.
Kenny Olson
So not only are you paying the extra fees, you're also pay to charge that car up and the upkeep of the batteries and have you priced out replacing batteries.
Joe Soucheray
We have had a Tesla for almost a year. We spent $18 charging in. Yeah. Did you get your license tab renewal yet? We paid $600 but that was including the plates.
Kenny Olson
Gabe, you're banned from using a microphone.
Joe Soucheray
Was he not on the microphone when he said that?
Kenny Olson
No, I know I have. I don't like what he's saying, Joe.
Joe Soucheray
Oh, I see.
Kenny Olson
Yeah, I'm unhappy with Gabriel right now.
Joe Soucheray
EV drivers could get taxed three times. Oh my word. Once at the change charging station, again with the sales tax already in place for electricity and again with the annual EV surcharge. But I thought we were trying to save mother. I thought our wonderful legislature was trying to save mother here. You try to save mother, you're gonna pay for it.
Kenny Olson
Have you noticed just as an aside, we just saw it from Gabe and we see it from Pat Carofalo when he rolls in. You EV drivers, you really think you're better than the rest of us, don't you?
Chris Reivers
Yes.
Joe Soucheray
Let me tell you something about Garoppolo.
Chris Reivers
Let me tell you something right now.
Joe Soucheray
He never once mentioned his license tabs. That's why his car's about 40 years old. It was the first electric car ever made.
Kenny Olson
He recently upgraded. Yeah, he's in a newer one now. I did lear really interesting about this by reading the comments. The comments are equally as fun. They were grousing about the fact that guys that drive one ton trucks get away with paying almost nothing. And that's because they pay a lower flat fee registration compared to like say what? I drive a 3/4 ton truck so 1 tons often use a flat rate which can be cheaper than other vehicles.
John Height
Well, did you? It seems like the politics on this are a little mixed up too. Did you read the rest?
Gabriel
Yeah.
Joe Soucheray
Don't say it's a Republican who authored the bill.
John Height
Yeah, Republican officer. The bill.
Kenny Olson
And he wouldn't comment on the story.
John Height
Very strange.
Joe Soucheray
And a Democrat is angry about it. Yeah, well, because the Democrats, they're. They're the earth sabers. I read that three times.
Kenny Olson
Bizarro world.
Chris Reivers
You know what I need? I need a safe space.
Joe Soucheray
No, you need a new garage floor. You know what, let me tell you something. You better get a garage that has a lot of electrical outlets in it if you're going to get an EV installed. Building Solutions ibscoating.com I met these guys the other day. We had some serious talk about the garage. They do garage floors That'll handle it all. And it's something called polyurea. It's unlike the old school epoxy, which unfortunately I happen to have. This polyurea will not peel from hot tires or crack when the temperature swing. And it has that same great quality as all epoxy floors. You spill oil on it, clean it up and they can do a floor often they can do it in just one day so you can get your garage back quickly. Easy to clean, the finish stays bright. You don't want to walk out there and look at that thing and say to yourself, what a dump I got here. You gotta get this thing cleaned up and take care of your cylinders. Slip resistant too. Boy, I find that useful. Slip resistant. A coated garage floor, it just feels better. It's cleaner, it's brighter, it's more finished every time you walk on it. And the people who can handle this are installed building solutions. IBSCoating.com. Hey Garage Logic fans, Mishki here slipping in ever so briefly to mention that I have a podcast that comes out every Wednesday and every Friday, twice a week now. emphasize again that this office of Inspector General created in the legislature which is going to go to Walz's desk for his signature, is not the answer. The inspector general, it says, will answer to no commissioner, no agency head, no single executive. We are bashing a bipartisan, well vetted, thoroughly worked through anti fraud bill that every Minnesota should celebrate, said Nick France DFL North Mankato no, you're still reporting to yourselves. Nothing leaves the building. Nothing leaves the Capitol building.
Kenny Olson
All of those things though in theory would be good if they could do anything about it. But they don't have any power.
Joe Soucheray
All this did, all this will do is expand this uncontrolled, growing bureaucracy at the state level. It'll merely be a new office filled with the same people who are there Now. It'll cost 3 to 6 million to start it up. Then it's going to cost 11 to 12 million a year in annual operating costs. There's no new law enforcement agency within the inspector general's office.
Kenny Olson
That's the big sticking point.
Joe Soucheray
So who are you reporting to? Yeah, who are you reporting to?
Kenny Olson
Mirror, mirror on the wall.
Joe Soucheray
John Marty, who's been there since the Lindbergh flight. I'm supporting the bill despite deep concern, said Marty. I really don't think we should be wasting money creating a new separate law enforcement agency. Well, I'm with John on it. It is a waste of money. It's just a redundancy. It does nothing. It does nothing. Interestingly enough, Minnesotans are catching on. The Star Tribune's lead letter to the editor today is wonderful. It's by a guy named Bobby Reardon in Pelican Lake Township, Minnesota.
Gabriel
Okay, side note, John Marty's been around since 87.
Joe Soucheray
Isn't that something? Yes, Minnesota lawmakers may have good intentions in creating a new independent. He puts quote marks around that anti fraud office. But the structure guarantees it will never be truly independent. If the office is housed inside state government, funded by state government and staffed through appointments controlled by state government, then it ultimately answers to whoever occupies the governor's office.
Kenny Olson
Yeah.
Joe Soucheray
That is not independence. That is internal oversight with political strings. We have already seen what happens when fraud oversight is kept in house. Agencies avoid investigating their own leadership. Sensitive cases get slow walked or quietly deprioritized. Budgets can be cut if investigations get too close to politically uncomfortable territory. Staff know their careers depend on not embarrassing the administration. The result is predictable. Small cases get attention while large scale failures are brushed aside or buried. If Minnesota is serious about preventing another feeding our future type disaster, the solution is not another office within the same failed system. Real accountability requires an external non political investigative body. One with no loyalty to either party, no dependence on state budgets, and no fear of staff losing their jobs for following the facts. Corporations and federal agencies use outside forensic auditors for exactly this. Independence cannot exist when the watchdog reports to the people it may need to investigate. Minnesota taxpayers deserve oversight that is structurally insulated from political pressure. An internal office, no matter what label lawmakers put on, it cannot provide that. This is basically suspects reporting to suspects. Yeah, this, this means nothing. Only it means more money out of your pocket to fund another state agency,
Kenny Olson
I believe. Gabe, you can help me out with this. We had, I think her name was Heather Gustafson, right? And she wrote an anti fraud bill. And did she not? Part of that was this inspector general. Right.
Joe Soucheray
It is her. Senator Heather Gustafson, DFL Vadnais Heights, the chief author of the bill.
Kenny Olson
So what they did is they gutted that. They changed it and turned it around and made it into something they want, and they removed that policing aspect of it. Whereas before, even though this office would have been a part of the executive branch, they would not have had to answer to the governor. Now, in fact, like the letter said, they do.
Joe Soucheray
So if the highly suspect, Amy Klobuchar, the principal voice of the Minnesota dfl, becomes governor, the fraud, which I find. I don't find it plausible that she didn't know about it, all investigations then would go to her desk. Well, we haven't gained anything.
Kenny Olson
Right? Right.
Gabriel
Can't wait to have her on.
Joe Soucheray
I'm not accusing Amy of theft. I'm accusing Amy, I guess, of laziness.
Kenny Olson
Doesn't it read like every spy novel we've ever read, where the guy in charge at the top of the ladder is actually corrupt?
Joe Soucheray
Yeah. And like many spy novels, there's no daring, dashing do. There's no James Bond stunts. It's normal clerical people who are part of the game.
Kenny Olson
Yeah.
Joe Soucheray
Yes, you in the back.
Chris Reivers
Your guy, Attorney General Keith Ellison's been at it.
Joe Soucheray
What'd he find? Somebody that spilled paint somewhere.
Chris Reivers
There was a gentleman who. I don't know if I would say he went viral. Gabe can help me with that, but there's a gentleman by the name of AJ Legault called AJ Investigates, and he says a tip from my plumber led me halfway across the country tracking down a guy running what looked like an epic scam with victims nationwide and tens of millions in money. We found his Lamborghini and left a card. Now the feds and AG taking action. This is Care 11, so I don't know if he works for them or whatever.
Joe Soucheray
Is this a tweet?
Chris Reivers
Your guy, Attorney General Keith Ellison, said the following, Joe, in response to this. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, A.J. if you scam Minnesotans, we'll hold you and your Lamborghini accountable.
Joe Soucheray
No, you won't, Keith. You've already. You've already been proven complicit.
Kenny Olson
He is going after big oil, Joe.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah.
Kenny Olson
On our behalf. Even though we didn't ask him. He's fighting for us.
Joe Soucheray
You know, I can't think of someone getting back to these EV tabs. I mean, there's nothing I can do with this office. Investigator General. It's not a scam.
Kenny Olson
Them.
Joe Soucheray
It's their. It's their lack of aggressiveness it's their, their belief that we're not to we who pay their bills. We're not treated with respect. We're not treated.
Kenny Olson
Seriously, I'm going to disagree with you and say it is a scam.
Joe Soucheray
Okay.
Kenny Olson
Whistleblower. Whistleblower. Fay goes to one of her then supervisors, Shireen Gandhi, and Shereen said, nah, that's. No, that's okay. And then, then Shireen was put in charge. And then what happened the day before she was about to testify.
Joe Soucheray
You're gone, Shereen.
Kenny Olson
We are rearranging on the Titanic.
Joe Soucheray
But.
Kenny Olson
So she's not in charge. But really she's still in charge.
Joe Soucheray
So that same exact thing is going to happen now, only within the confines of another 20 million we got to spend to get her off the ground.
Kenny Olson
I call that a scam, my friend. We're being scammed.
Joe Soucheray
In the meantime, the guy lives in a $900,000 house in Georgia with a $1,200 property tax bill that disappeared this year because he met some points, whatever that means. And when they went to the polling place with only their driver's license, the friendly gal there at the polling place, well, you got your permit to carry with you. That'll have your picture on it. If somebody said the words permit to carry in a voting line in Minneapolis, the hazmat team would be called.
Gabriel
Yes, yes.
Joe Soucheray
Getting back to the EV thing for a minute, you don't know that, but
Kenny Olson
you just hit it out of the park. That's exactly what would happen if.
Joe Soucheray
I cannot think of a better candidate for an EV than me. I've got no commute, you know, I don't have a lot of places to go. I mean, my commute is 6 miles on surface streets.
Kenny Olson
Well, why are you holding back then?
Joe Soucheray
Well, I was leading up to something. A, I'm not interested. Never have been and never will be. But this seals the deal. Even if somehow I lost sense and said, I'm going to do it, you know, get a little Fiat that cheap as hell, a little electric Fiat 500, and run it all week on one charge, back and forth to work. I don't want the damn tax bill.
Gabriel
No, that's hefty.
Kenny Olson
I have a 100 yard commute. I fire up all eight cylinders. As a guy that every day.
Chris Reivers
As a guy that put on 275 miles yesterday. Wow.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah. Go ahead, Chris.
Chris Reivers
The one thing that you're failing to understand, though, is you think a car with 60,000 miles is old.
Joe Soucheray
Oh, that's that
Gabriel
we're breaking her in.
Chris Reivers
I might as well get rid of her before it dies on me.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah, I couldn't go that far. I couldn't. What about that?
Kenny Olson
What about. I looked at the plow truck the other day. 230.
Joe Soucheray
Adam wow. Yeah. You know what? Aiken Anoka, are your A counties? Is Isanti a county? Yes, Isantis a county. And you know what they've done?
Gabriel
What's that doing Isanti County?
Joe Soucheray
Well, it's it's just such a description of reason that it's it's wonderful to note this. Isanti county has kept property tax increases low even as the county is growing faster than much of Minnesota. In Isanti county, it's up there, you can get there. Isani county, the levy increase is 4% over two years, which the Department of Revenue says is the lowest in Minnesota. And our staff knows this very well that when they come to us with requests, first question we're going to ask is can we have this paid for by dollars outside of tax levies? First question we always ask Alex Duff said. Duff is the Isani County Board chairman. He said he was also watching neighboring Anoka county, which had a 28.2% property tax increase over the past two years. He said a healthy reserve fund and consistent county employment have helped Isanti avoid larger increases. Isanti county has a has had a 9% population growth rate since 2020, which the report said is the second highest in the state. That growth has also raised questions about how long the county can keep taxes this low. In fact, next year we're selling and we're probably coming back to this county, meaning Isanti said. Kathy Mal Den Mal Dash Den, who now lives in Chicago county, said she moved away from Isanti County a few years ago for family reasons. She said low property tax reasons are low. Property tax increases are one reason she wants to return. Time will tell. The last three years we've been quite effective of keeping it really low, duff said. He's the board chair. I believe we are sustainable with these taxes low for at least the foreseeable future. County Administrator Amanda Usher said county leaders know that major buildings are aging. She said the county does not think it needs to make those large upgrades. Our buildings are all aging. We have a Health and Human Services building that's aging. We have a jail and sheriff's office that's aging. And I think all of those department heads would say I'd love to spend a few million dollars to really upgrade my building, but we don't need to do that, usher said. We don't need to do that, you.
Gabriel
As of 2020, the census, the population was 41,135. The county seat is Cambridge. It's basically bordered on the west to 169, to the east to 35. So in between Zimmerman and Malacca to the west, and Rock Creek and North
John Height
Bridge, it's up there right above me. Anoka County.
Joe Soucheray
Right. Well, here, it says right here. For comparison, Isani county has about 45,000 people and Anoka county has 385. The report said both counties expect property tax increases to stay in the single digits over the next five years. Well, how can that be true of Anoka, which just went to 28.2? Well, my point is, you know, they're a little bit away from the country's tallest buildings. They got some people sitting around city hall saying, well, yeah, it'd be nice to have a new $10 million sheriff's office. Sure. No, we just, we're not going to do that now. We don't have the money for it and we're not gonna just sit here and willy nilly raise taxes. So there's portions of the state which function is Isanti. Here it comes right now on the crawl. Isanti county is flying the true Minnesota state flag.
Chris Reivers
Fantastic. Two reports along those same lines. Our buddy Ben, the owner of Masters Maples. Yeah, Gabe, you can add this one. The city of Cohasset, Minnesota, where Masters Maples is founded, is flying the true Minnesota flag. He just wanted to let you know that the city council and the city of Cohasset fly the true Minnesota flag. And I have a sad report to note. In Jordan, they fly the euphorian flag.
Joe Soucheray
Well, they're pretty, you know, they're damn near a first ring suburb these days.
Chris Reivers
I know because I drove by because I normally don't drive by city hall, but the youngest had a baseball game over there, so we drove by yesterday. Oh, man, is it faded?
Kenny Olson
Is it fresh?
Chris Reivers
It looks brand new, Ken. It looks brand new.
Joe Soucheray
You know, there's a crawl running on our YouTube page every day that. What are we at, Gabe? 100 cities? I mean, are we near 176? 76 cities in the state are flying. And this again, this is because the people in those places have decided they don't want to fly. You know what the new flag is? It's the city flag flag. It's an urban flag. That's really what it is. And it was created by the urbanites in the legislature who have done nothing but steal from us and ruin this state financially. And that's why that flag is rejected. It has nothing to do with anything else.
Kenny Olson
It's fun to read. There. There's been a slew of articles recently in the past week or so, and every single one of them is condescending to the people that don't like the new flag. Very, very. You know why condescending you hillbillies?
Joe Soucheray
Well, because people are turning this into tribalism. If you like the old flag, you must be a Trumper. It has nothing to do with it. Absolutely zero.
Kenny Olson
And then the other thing I want you to answer too is you were given your opportunity to contribute to the discussion. How were you given that opportunity, Joe?
Joe Soucheray
I could have submitted a design.
Kenny Olson
That was the only opportunity gave you.
Chris Reivers
Point of order. What if a city in an establishment doesn't have an actual city council?
Joe Soucheray
Well, what about it?
Kenny Olson
Well, the Lord looks upon them and smiles.
Chris Reivers
How great is it? Let's say you're a township. Do they qualify? Because this is almost like. It's almost like a ruling, you know? Do you. Do you qualify to be able to fly to make the crawl?
Joe Soucheray
Racine, Ramsey, Richmond, Rockford, Rockville, Rose Creek, Sauk Center, Spicer, Spring Grove, Spring, Spring Lake Park. I'm reading the crawl.
Kenny Olson
St. Francis, St. Mary in the 80s, listening to CCO.
Joe Soucheray
These schools are closed till further notice. Wabasha, Wadena, Williams, Wyndham, Winnebago.
Kenny Olson
We got snow up to our ass in Zumbrota.
Chris Reivers
Did I just say Herb and Carnell?
Josh Arnold
I meant Boone.
Joe Soucheray
And Zumbrota is on the crawl, by the way.
Chris Reivers
Yes, there it is. It's the last one because it's Z.
Joe Soucheray
One more note on the opener. The garage door opener. Adrian writes. I'd like to defend Joe on this. I'm not sure I'm. Joe's an old guy. Oh, no.
Gabriel
Good start.
Joe Soucheray
We don't know how much longer we're going to have him to open the door for us. Boy, that's kind of a bleak thought, isn't it, really? Joe was only here to set an example and teach us how to be GL ers. Joe is like our parents who taught us to walk, ride a bike, cut our meat for us. But at some point, we learned to do all these things for ourself. Do all of you who are crying about Joe missing Friday need him to open your beer for you, too? I was out Friday drinking beer in the garden and enjoying the day. Okay, the garage door was open, but I've busted my tail this spring making a 10 bed garden, planting 24 grapevines. Three apple trees, et cetera. I can't see any of this from the garage, so I wanted to admire my work, open the door myself. Thank you, Adrian. Maybe that's a lesson to you people here that are complaining.
Chris Reivers
Adrian playing the role of sycophant for today?
Joe Soucheray
Not really. He starts out with the old part and how I might not even be around much longer.
John Height
I was gonna say. Thanks, old timer.
Chris Reivers
Good one, Joe.
Joe Soucheray

John Height
Sunday Night Football.
Chris Reivers
In fact, aren't they having a record number of.
Joe Soucheray
No, John, I meant the release of the schedule. Is that a big deal?
Chris Reivers
Well, can I tell you something?
Joe Soucheray
You may.
Chris Reivers
They didn't schedule NBA playoff games because.
Joe Soucheray
Are you kidding me? I'm not joking.
Chris Reivers
I was listening to a show and they said, well, there's no NBA games because they were worried about getting overshadowed by the NFL schedule.
Joe Soucheray
So there'll Be people on the ESPN breaking it down. Oh, they gotta play. Oh, boy.
Gabriel
Yeah.
Chris Reivers
Giants and Eagles, week eight.
Joe Soucheray
Who you got?
John Height
Do they go week by week just to build the suspense?
Gabriel
Yes.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah, probably.
Chris Reivers
Or remember on the ride with Royce? Johnny, we did that for the NFL schedule, week one, When.
Joe Soucheray
When?
Chris Reivers
Joe, The NFL has become so big.
Joe Soucheray
How big is it there?
Chris Reivers
I should send you the story. There's an article when this first surface that they were going to play a game in Mexico City. They talked about the extended amount of security detail going to need because Mexico City is such a crime ridden. You know what?

In news, school referendum results from across the state in yesterday's voting, Princeton Public Schools referendum that included a $51.35 million bond and 3/4 of a million dollar technology level was not approved in the South St. Paul School District. As we mentioned, both the building bond and capital project levy failed to pass.
Joe Soucheray
Good.
John Height
Tri City United Public Schools was asking voters for an additional 39.9 million for building improvements, but that for. But that referendum failed by 65 votes. South St. Paul was asked for about 50 million for building maintenance, including for ADA accessibility, sports facilities upgrades and other improvements. Meanwhile, In Lakeville, the $139 million Growing Together referendum passed funding additions and renovations to schools in that district. And voters in the Renshaw school district approved the school consolidation referendum, which means the Carlton and Renshaw school districts will join together. One person dead, three others injured after a boat crash on Lake Vermillion, According to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. Rescue crews responded to the scene Monday night after reports that a boat crashed through several people into the water. The sheriff's office said the crash happened near Manbeck island in Beatty Township. Three people taken from the scene by ambulance, according to the sheriff's office. One of those people later airlifted to a Duluth hospital. A fourth person was pronounced dead at the scene after life saving efforts by medical personnel were unsuccessful. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to the Sheriff's office.
Joe Soucheray
John, when was this?
John Height
Monday night.
Joe Soucheray
Monday night it was fairly chilly. No one's on the lake at this time of year. That. That's a bad recreational purpose. How in the hell do you have a boat crash on a virtually empty lake on a chilly night, which would have further kept people away from the water.
Chris Reivers
Was alcohol a factor?
Joe Soucheray
We don't know. They're not saying it.
John Height
Update to a story we talked about on Monday. A couple from Columbia Heights has been arrested after a woman was shot while driving Saturday night. Fridley Cordero, Frank Allen Frost and his wife Cynthia Victoria Frost were taken into custody Monday. The Anoka County Sheriff's Office confirmed they are suspects in the shooting. They haven't yet been formally charged. Police and emergency personnel were called to the area of Interstate 694 and University Avenue just after 9 o' clock Saturday found a woman who had apparently been shot while driving the victim's SUV left the road stopped near the I694 rail ramp. Authorities say a girl was also in the SUV at the time but wasn't hurt. Law enforcement not providing any updates on the woman's condition as of Tuesday or what the reason was for the shooting or if the shooters knew the woman who was shot. A man who attacked his parents and left them seriously wounded last year in Champlin has been ordered to serve 11 years in prison. 40 year old Travis William Lester pleaded guilty last month to two counts of second degree attempted murder. A judge sentenced him on Friday to 135 months and 15 days with credit to 245 days served in jail, according to the complaint. Police responded to the report of a domestic assault on the evening of September 5th. A neighbor had found a woman covered in blood and police found another victim, a man, bloodied on the deck of the home. Man said his son Lester had stabbed him and his wife in what he described as a drug induced rage. Both victims were taken to the hospital at the time in critical condition. Lester was later arrested when officers spotted his car in Lido Lakes. A butcher knife and injured jar containing suspected methamphetamine were recovered from the vehicle. Lester admitted to stabbing his parents and said he had been thinking about doing it for, in his words, a day or two. Problem with the city of Excelsior's water pressure has led to a boil water advisory for residents there. Residents are warned not to drink any water before boiling it at least one minute or to use bottled water to avoid the risk of contamination, according to a notice sent to residents. The city experienced the issue. The morning water pressure has already been restored. The water will be flushed to ensure there are no bacteria present. One local media note. Twin Cities Radio morning guy Dave Ryan is retiring after 33 years on the air at KDWB, the host announced during his morning show today that his last day will be May 22nd. He's been at KDWB since 1993, coming to the Twin Cities after working in Las Vegas, Vegas, Columbus, Ohio and Phoenix. The station will honor Ryan over the next 10 days with special programming, listener tributes, non air celebrations. Ryan says after he steps away from the microphone he'll take on an ambassador role and will continue to be part of the KDWB family.
Gabriel
You should give him a little call in one of those mornings.
Joe Soucheray
I don't know Dave. I do.
Chris Reivers
I worked with him. He's. He's a really good dude.
Gabriel
Started when you did you outlast arrested him?
Joe Soucheray
Yeah, yeah.
Chris Reivers
Give a haha. I'm still working.
Gabriel
I don't mean it like that.
Kenny Olson
Did he take over for Steve Cochran?
Chris Reivers
Yes.
Kenny Olson
Okay.
Joe Soucheray
Yep.
Gabriel
Wow.
Chris Reivers
I think he came from Arizona. Phoenix. Phoenix area.
Joe Soucheray
He just said he came from Las Vegas.
John Height
No, he came from Phoenix.
Joe Soucheray
I'm sorry. Like I said, he came from Phoenix.
Gabriel
You just can't be that War the Roses segment that they usually have on,
Chris Reivers
which is totally authentic, totally off the cuff.
John Height
Why don't we take a quick break here and hear from our buddy Mr. Olson.
Kenny Olson
See, I was looking at the Meteorologist Jonathan Uhas's 5 Eyewitness News forecast. He says 70s this week, 80s this weekend. That means we better stock up a fresh supply of Bugs Be Gone. Larry sent his endorsement in yesterday. Hey Kenny, longtime listener, first time to endorse a product on your show. Been listening to you spout on and off about seafoam and their vast array of products. I've used the motor treatment for 40 plus years, but to be honest, had my doubts about Bugs Be Gone was in the Fleet farm there in Baxter last weekend and I found a huge supply of Bugs Be Gone on an end cap. So I picked me up a bottle yesterday, May 12th. I thought I'd give it a try. Sprayed down my bug covered windscreen in the front of my truck, let it soak for a minute or three, gave it the hose and voila. To my amazement, no more bugs worked as you promised, my man, I'm a believer. Sorry that I ever doubted you, Larry, outside of Bacchus, Minnesota. And that's all you need to know, folks. You might not, how's the phrase go? Hear me now, believe me later, I think that's how it is. Bugs be Gone. It's going to change your life and you're going to love it. Look for it on the end caps and in the automotive chemical aisle at Fleet Farms. You can also find it in NAC hardware stores, auto parts stores, etc, etc and here's a tip, if you find it on the shelf, buy that little refill jug and just keep reusing your spray bottle if you see it. Yeah, you're gonna, you're gonna need to buy it. You'll definitely need it. A wonderful product in a world of bug covered windshields. Bugs be gone. Windshield.
Chris Reivers

Smoking weed Kenne yeah. What was it doing bringing home.
Joe Soucheray
I don't know what he was doing
Kenny Olson
in in other news oh, we're still in the news.
Chris Reivers
That's right.
Gabriel
Here we go.
Kenny Olson
My apologies.
John Height
Dr. Marty McCary. I love that name. Dr. Marty McCary resigned as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration yesterday. President Trump said on Truth Social that Kyle Diamantes, the FDA's top food regulator, would take over as acting commissioner. Diamantes is a lawyer, doesn't have a medical Several news agencies reported last week that Trump was considering firing McCary after months of dissatisfaction with some of his work at the fda. His tenure at the agency was marked by upheaval, including unexpected drug rejections, staff departures and mounting pressure on the agency to act on abortion pills. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the president was also frustrated that Makary had not moved quickly enough to approve flavored vapes during the 2024 presidential campaign. The president had vowed to, in his words, save vaping. Last Tuesday, the FDA announced it had authorized fruit flavored vapes for adults in the US after months of pressure from the industry and the president. That move ultimately, according to sources, triggered McCary's decision to resign. A source said McCary opposed that decision, chose to resign ahead of congressional testimony Wednesday rather than publicly defend a position
Joe Soucheray
that he couldn't support, you know, these insane psychopathic tweets that Trump gets into every night. Sometimes as many as 50 on Truth Social. He approves every one of them. But, you know, they're written, they're, they're brought to him by. He's got one person in charge of that. I was reading this in the Wall Street Journal. Her name is. What the hell's her name? I don't know. No, I hear I gotta get it now that I brought it up. Nat. Natalie Harp. Natalie Harp. I think she's 33. She's the driving force behind his incendiary and sometimes racist videos. And he rubs his hands together and goes, that's a good one. And then he puts it out there. But there's a person in charge of those.
John Height
When I read this story, because she brings him a stack of things, he either approves.
Josh Arnold
Re.
Kenny Olson
Re.
John Height
Putting them. Reputing what, what do you call it? Re.
Joe Soucheray
Reposting.
Gabriel
Repost.
John Height
Reposting. On, On Truth Social, he has to approve it or not approve it. And it reminded me of when you ask Reavers for stuff, except that she actually brings the stuff.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah, she does.
Chris Reivers
See, that's just me. Why do I get roped into that?
Joe Soucheray
Well, because it's accurate. It's accurate.
John Height
I'm sorry, Chris.
Chris Reivers
Dave Ryan was from Arizona.
Joe Soucheray
Or John did mention he had a gig in V. Vegas.
John Height
Yeah. First Vegas first, then Phoenix last. The Senate confirmed Kevin Warsh to the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors.
Joe Soucheray
There's no way to say that name, is there, John?
John Height
There isn't Warsh, no matter how you
Joe Soucheray
say it is Warsh.
Chris Reivers
That's what my Grammys say when she
John Height
would wash her hands.
Joe Soucheray
I know, you gotta wash your hands.
Chris Reivers
Yep.
John Height
Crucial step in President Trump's push to make Warsh the central bank's leader. After months of uncertainty due to that criminal probe of outgoing Chief Jerome Powell, the chamber voted 51 to 45 to confirm Warsh to a 14 year term as one of the Fed's seven governors. It's impossible.
Chris Reivers
That's all I'm hearing is Grandma Ktavi saying, wash your clothes already.
John Height
The Senate still needs to vote separately to confirm Warsh as chair of the Board of Governors, replacing Powell, whose four year term as chair ends Friday. That vote expected later this week. President Trump arrived in Beijing for his hotly anticipated talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the Iran war trade and US arms sales detection. Taiwan, the meat of the summit, doesn't really get underway until tomorrow. Thursday, when the leaders hold bilateral talks, visit the Temple of Heaven. That's where Chinese emperors once prayed for bumper crops and take part in a formal banquet. But the Chinese offered Trump a pop filled welcome, rolling out the red carpet for him after Air Force One landed in the Chinese capital. The Justice Department holding internal discussions about settling President Trump's lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service in the coming that, according to people familiar with the deliberations, a move that could involve the government directly providing taxpayer funds or another public benefit to the president. Whether to settle the suit and on what terms remains up in the air, though one of the settlement options the Justice Department of White House officials are reviewing is the possibility of the IRS dropping any audits of Trump, his family members or businesses, according to two of the people. Back in January, Trump, along with two of his sons in the Trump family business, sued the irs IRS for $10 billion over the length of their tax returns during the president's first term. There is a controversy in this case between the Justice Department and Trump. For a lawsuit to be valid, the two parties must actually be on opposite sides. Otherwise the judge can throw the case
Joe Soucheray
out and throw it out because they're not on opposite sides.
John Height
The judge has ordered Trump's personal lawyers, along with the Justice Department, which represents the IRS, to submit briefs by May 20th 20th explaining whether they are in conflict with one another. White House and Justice Department officials have in recent days been exploring ways to potentially settle that suit before that deadline, according to the source.
Joe Soucheray
He's suing for $10 billion of our money from an agency he's in charge of. That's a hell of a good. That's almost like this new fraud investigative unit.
John Height
We got a business note with a local concern. A Sleep Number has recorded the loss for its 11th consecutive quarter and this is the second one in a row with a loss of over $50 million with another quarter of falling sales, its Shares fell over 22% on Tuesday. After releasing the financial report in March, the Minneapolis based company warned investors it's in danger of staying a growing concern on the market. In April, Sleep Number amended its credit agreement on a short term basis, buying some time to seek longer term financing.
Joe Soucheray
They should advertise with us, I told
Gabriel
Bill, the CEO years ago who was a big listener, and they didn't pull the trigger.
John Height
Researchers are finding that people who engage in arts and cultural activities every week appear to age more slowly at a biological level, with effects comparable to regular exercise.
Chris Reivers
You walk every day.
Joe Soucheray
But this is arts and culture.
John Height
Arts and culture.
Chris Reivers
What Arts and culture?
Joe Soucheray
They have lectures on nice things like arts and culture. You're going to the mountain mountains with me.
John Height
We've long been told exercise is one of the best things we can do to age well. But according to these folks, visiting an art gallery, joining a choir, or taking a pottery class was doing just as much good. Right down to your DNA.
Chris Reivers
Could you imagine?
Joe Soucheray
Joel, how about this pottery? How do you like this thing I just made?
Gabriel
Look at my bowl. Ding.
Chris Reivers
Bleeping.
Joe Soucheray
What?
Gabriel
A cigarette and an ashtray.
Joe Soucheray
It's ashtray.
John Height
According to the new study from the University College of London, regularly taking part in arts activities might help slow the pace of the aging. The study analyzed survey responses and blood test data from 3,556 adults. Researchers compared participants engagement in arts and cultural activities with chemical changes to DNA linked to biological aging. The team found that people who engaged more often in arts and cultural activities activities and who took part in a wider variety of them appeared to have a slower pace of aging. At a younger biological age. People who took part in an arts activity at least once a week appeared to age around 4% more slowly than those who rarely engaged with them. The researcher said this was similar to the difference seen between people who exercised weekly and those who do not exercise.
Joe Soucheray
I don't know. 4%'s worth taking a pottery class. What.
Kenny Olson
What is a cultural experience or whatever you make it?
John Height
The story. The story mentioned museums, going to a concert.
Kenny Olson
But couldn't the same be said as if you just have a hobby? What if you're an old guy that makes bird houses?
Joe Soucheray
Yeah, I would think that qualifies anything
John Height
that that keeps you busy.
Kenny Olson
I mean, I don't have to go to a Jackson Pollock exhibit once a week, do I?
Chris Reivers
No, I don't think so.
Gabriel
But don't you think working the pottery wheel would be very therapeutic?
Joe Soucheray
No more therapeutic than building a birdhouse. John.
Kenny Olson
I only brought him up because John does. Joe doesn't like him. I thought I'd get a rise on bird houses.
Joe Soucheray
I love.
Chris Reivers
No, you're talking about Jackson Pollock. Gabe, I have a question. How good are you at recreating, like, AI imaging and video and stuff? I've tried. I'm not very good at it. Are you any good at it? Because there's a reason I'm asking a. I mean, do you want to break the Internet? We take Joe and Patrick and we recreate the scene from the movie Ghost where they're doing the. The pottery clay.
Gabriel
Patrick's behind you because you're skinnier.
Chris Reivers
Yeah, It'd be better than Roy and Rookie with their Shirts off.
Kenny Olson
Well, if we're going to do that, let's. Let's do such painting. The Sistine Chapel.
Chris Reivers
Oh, there you go.
Kenny Olson
Laying on his back on scaffolding. That's not paint dripping in his face.
Joe Soucheray
I don't know how he did that. I do know how he did it.
Kenny Olson
Yeah.
John Height
And a French teen is facing mischief and public nuisance charges in Singapore after posting a video on social media of himself licking a straw from an orange juice vending machine and then putting it back.
Joe Soucheray
No.
Chris Reivers
See, I hate these people so much.
John Height
Much.
Chris Reivers
Don't do that.
Gabriel
Yeah.
John Height
Didier Gaspard owen Maximilian is 18 years old. He was charged and has not yet entered a plea. He allegedly committed the offense at a shopping mall back in March, and the video spread rapidly when he put it online.
Gabriel
Are we going to flog him like
John Height
Michael VAY teen was granted court permission.
Gabriel
You remember Michael V? He got flogged for spitting on the sidewalk. And Singapore.
Joe Soucheray
That he was a dog guy.
Kenny Olson
I thought that was the dog Vic.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah.
Kenny Olson
Okay.
John Height
The teen was granted permission Wednesday to travel to Manila until May 25 for a school trip required for his graduation. But then he'll have to go Back to court May 29. Mischief carries a penalty in Singapore of up to two years in prison or a fine or both, while public nuisance is less severe with up to three months in prison, a fine, or both. Jews, the company operating the juice vending machine, filed a report and sanitized the dispenser and replaced all 500 straws in the machine. Singapore is a small, densely populated city state. They tightly regulate public behavior. As Rook pointed out there. This includes restrictions like limits on chewing gum and strong penalties for littering and vandalism and apparently spitting on the sidewalk.
Joe Soucheray
From what Rook said, I'm guessing John, thank you very much.
John Height
You're welcome.
Joe Soucheray
Say if you ever get in an accident, especially if you're driving one of those electric jobs where you're paying 40 grand a year for your license tabs. Get a hold of Bradshaw and Brian, personal injury attorneys. If you're like me and many other people, you may not know what to do if you're ever injured in an accident. God forbid. Insurance companies and adjusters can be tough to deal with. Mike Bryant from Bradshaw and Bryant and his team will explain your rights, represent you, help you through a tough time. For six consecutive years, Mike has been recognized as a super lawyer by Minnesota law and politics. That is the bible for those guys. I hope you're never in an accident, but if you are, call Bradshaw and Bryant at 800-770-7008 or go to MinnesotaPersonal Injury.com for a free case. And please don't be part of the problem. Don't text and drive or drive distracted. That's just common sense from Bradshaw and Bryant.
Chris Reivers
Here's a man who spends hours in
Joe Soucheray
hardware stores sifting through the nuts and bolts of life. Joe Sucere Wait.
Chris Reivers
We are Nuts. And we we are nutsmn.com it's baseball season, so we roll in for dinner at KwikTrip at about 9:30pm Each and every night. By the way, I know this is a commercial for We Are Nuts. Joe Soucheray
How are you paid? If you're a doordash driver, it's a
Chris Reivers
percentage of the fee.
Joe Soucheray
So you also get tips. Yes, because I was talking to a guy who made 350 bucks this weekend as a doordash driver.
Chris Reivers
Okay.
Joe Soucheray
But my only thought was, what the hell, I bet he spent 50 bucks in gas, probably, if not more. So it's really going to be tough on that kind of calling.
Chris Reivers
There are many people, though, that do it. Say you're in Minneapolis and St. Paul. They do it on their bicycle. They'll go to Jimmy John's or whatever and they'll get their order and Then deliver it that way.
Kenny Olson
Your order will be here in 4 hours, 23 minutes exactly.
Gabriel
Why did you feel the need to run the numbers?
Joe Soucheray
Well, because.
Chris Reivers
Looking for a part time gift?
Joe Soucheray
No. No, I fell for the guy. You work your ass off all weekend. 350 bucks. That's not bad. That's pretty good. But I wonder what the hell I did. I forgot to ask him what he spent in gas. I have some good news.
Chris Reivers
Well, most of those people, that's just a side hustle for them.
Joe Soucheray
No, I understand.
Chris Reivers
Oh, okay.
Joe Soucheray
I have some good news. The Minneapolis City Council got back to taking care of what's important and they got something done. They. They'll get rid of the Cesar Chavez Avenue street signs and they'll put fourth street back up.
Gabriel
Can't they find another?
Joe Soucheray
It's in the north loop. Pearl Warren came up with this one. Pearl's a council member and she thinks the name should revert to its original name, 4th Avenue North. It's now called Caesar's Chavez, but he got into some jam with sexual allegations, so they have to get rid of him.
Kenny Olson
According to Latricia, Pearl is pretty cool. She's Ward 5.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah.
Kenny Olson
And didn't she refer to the Violence Interrupters as Skittles looking nuts characters or something like that? I seem to remember something like that.
Joe Soucheray
Today's flight update begins with an interesting note. MPR did a big story on their website today. I check NPR every day for news and it might as well be a transcript of this show, which shockingly doesn't get mentioned. But they're acting like they've just discovered this and they got it all broken down for you. What to know about the Minnesota state flag. And they. They don't come up with. They came up with 16 cities. We're at 76. Okay. Which would have been known had you seen the crawl on our. On our show. I don't expect that they would see that crawl, but it's a long piece and it says one of the sub heads in the story is. Why is this coming up again? Well, there isn't a clear reason why the debate around the flag has skyrocketed. There seems to be a political element. Many who want to fly the old flag express frustration with the fact that the redesign process happened at the state level without a Democratic vote. Changes to the state flag and seal took place under a DFL led state legislature in 2020 and have garnered criticism for Republicans. So they're taking. They're not factoring in that there are probably many DFL type people in this state who don't fly the new flag, but they want to make it tribalism. I won't continue with this, but I have today's flag update in spite of this story, which basically is everything we ever said about the flag.
Gabriel
Yeah.
Joe Soucheray
Rich Hansen writes. Joe, I attended my granddaughter's spring choir at the Proctor Middle School. I was very pleased to see that the real state flag is on stage. Rich Hanson in Duluth. Now, we don't put schools on the crawl, do we?
Gabriel
No.
Joe Soucheray
Staff?
Chris Reivers
No. Well, that was part of what I was asking you earlier in the show. Does it have to be a. I
Joe Soucheray
think we're as long as we keep it to cities and townships and so townships do qualify. Villages and towns. Good morning. Joe Clearbrook. Clearbrook flies the true Minnesota state flag at the Veterans memorial. We are home to Wes Westrom, who was on the COVID of the first Sports Illustrated. He was the catcher for the New York Giants. I think veterans memorials deserve to be on the crawl. You know, that's damn near official, isn't it? Mayor I'm happy to report that the true flag is flying proudly in front of the Ely City Hall. I find this one really interesting because Ely's got some euphoria.
Kenny Olson
I'm stunned. Do they not have the Internet and telephones up there? Maybe they don't know.
Joe Soucheray
Plus a lot of euphorians, when they give themselves time to actually drive a car, they'll pack one up and go up to Ely type places, Right?
Gabriel
Right.
Joe Soucheray
So it's flying proudly in front of the city hall as well as along the main thoroughfare that runs through town. Knowing that one side of the local demographic are typically more vocal in getting things like this changed, I consider this a ray of hope. I hesitated to send this in fear of highlighting it would push it to the forefront, but it deserves to be recognized. Nice. Take care. Brady Luthin's in Ely. Well, thank God. Thank you, Ely. Here you go. Ely's going up on the ears today,
Kenny Olson
Joe. One of the funnest drives you could take in a car, truck or motorcycle is Highway 1 from Ely down to the North Shore. I think there's one town along the way. It's mostly woods.
Joe Soucheray
Did it on a Harley. Super Glide.
Kenny Olson
Twisty, turny, great road.
Joe Soucheray
Loved it.
Kenny Olson
Yep.
Joe Soucheray
All hail the Flashlight King.
John Height
Hail you.
Joe Soucheray
Oh, this guy. This guy knows. The NPR News this morning had an article about the Minnesota cities not flying the official state flag. If they had listened to gl, they would have learned this weeks ago and could have saved a lot of time and energy. I had not noticed the similarity the Somalian flag that the article points out, which is not subtle. And how about the detail? DFL Idiot. Oh, I get it. Idiot. Who wants to defund cities flying the real flag. In the NPR story, he says, I was just kidding. I don't really want that to pass.
Kenny Olson
That's a Golden Valley DFLer.
Joe Soucheray
Mike Freeberg yeah, my throat is getting mighty sore from stuff being shoved down it. Thank you and your fellow logicians for being beacons of hope in this sea of madness we call Minnesota. Ralph In Forest Lake, John Jewison writes, I'm a longtime listener. I'm on the city council in Staples, Minnesota. Last night we voted to switch back to the old 1983 flag. As with many topics we are presented with, I expected there to be some pushback from certain members that lean a particular way. But everyone feverishly seized, seized upon reverting back to the old flag, the true flag. I was emotional last night when the city administrator and I changed the flags back. It's a small pushback against a failed administration in St. Paul, but we can't start a fire without a spark. Thank you, John Jewison. So let's go with Staples staff member.
Kenny Olson
We didn't start the fire
John Height
from Springsteen.
Joe Soucheray
And that concludes the I know you're
Chris Reivers
the only one that offer up GL predictions. Can I take a stab at it?
Joe Soucheray
Sure.
Chris Reivers
Something just occurred to me. In an effort for Amy Klobuchar to distance herself from the Walls administration, I bet at some point, sensing, you know, which way the wind is blowing, she's going to go back to saying that I support the old Minnesota state.
Joe Soucheray
Not a chance in hell. Not a chance in hell.
Kenny Olson
I'm really curious about your opinion on the tone of that NPR story from this morning. Just the flag story. What did you think of the way it was presented to you?
Joe Soucheray
Oh, I had no issues with it.
Kenny Olson
No condescension whatsoever.
Joe Soucheray
I didn't think so.
Kenny Olson
Yeah. The only little condescension was at the very, very end with Freedom, when he he's just assuming that everybody in the state loves the new flag. But other than that, it was. It was informative. It gave both sides of the issue.
Joe Soucheray
I think so. Only because they come to us all the way from Boise, Idaho. Wow.
Gabriel
Making their way.
Joe Soucheray
The traveling lineman's heading east, spending the night in Boise, Idaho.
Kenny Olson
Do we have them booked yet?
Joe Soucheray
Oh, that. That won't be a problem. They'll love to come in. It's just going to be great.
Kenny Olson
So they're going to go down Through Twin Falls and Pocatello. Do you suppose they're going down to Salt Lake City and over, or are they going to go up to 94 and over?
Joe Soucheray
They're probably taking a northern route. Maybe.
Chris Reivers
Who knows?
Joe Soucheray
They have wanderlust.
Chris Reivers
I've done both. It can't go wrong either way.
Joe Soucheray
Right. What car were you picking up on this day, Joe?
Chris Reivers
Today is May 13th.
Joe Soucheray
Well, on this day in 1824, General Winfield Scott arrived to inspect Fort St. Anthony. Impressed with what he saw, he suggested the fort be named Fort Snelling for Colonel Hosiah Snelling, supervisor of its construction on this day, May 13th in 1858. And we were estate. The survey for a road from St. Cloud to Breckenridge began following the East Plains trail of the Red river carts. That road later became Highway 52.
John Height
Wow.
Kenny Olson
And then became I 94. Goes right through my town.
Joe Soucheray
Boy, this was a big, big day in the Twin Cities. Was on this day, May 13th in 1956, Elvis Presley performed at the Minneapolis Auditorium for a crowd of 3,000 people. But here's what they're not telling you. He also appeared in St. Paul the same day. Yeah, he did a twofer.
Chris Reivers
What time was the first show?
Joe Soucheray
I don't know. I don't know what time the second one was either.
Gabriel
Yeah, it was earlier.
Kenny Olson
Now that was back in the days of your youth when you had to take an ox cart from St. Paul call to Minneapolis. And it took two days.
Gabriel
Right before 94 was. 94 is 52.
Joe Soucheray
Actually, that's. That's 1956. I would not have been partaking in attending that concert.
Gabriel
Do you recall seriously, how many times Elvis visited here? Or was it few and far between?
Joe Soucheray
I don't know. Oh, and I've told this before and it just disappoints John Height a lot. I've just never paid any attention to El.
John Height
And that's why, you know, I don't believe anything you say about rock and roll. But that's another story altogether.
Joe Soucheray
You know what the.
John Height
The matinee was at 3 o', clock, St. Paul.
Joe Soucheray
But was I right, John? He played two cities, 3 o' clock
John Height
in St. Paul at now Roy Wilkins, then the St. Paul Auditorium. And then in the evening at 8 o' clock, he played the Minneapolis Auditorium.
Joe Soucheray
Cool.
John Height
Buck fifty.
Joe Soucheray
This day in history only mentions Minneapolis.
Gabriel
Discrimination. Yeah.
Kenny Olson
So you didn't like Elvis?
Joe Soucheray
I never. I just was never on board with the whole thing, really. I think I was. I think I was. Was in. In the late 50s as a 10, 11 and 12 year old. I probably thought he was. That was exciting. But his music has never.
Kenny Olson
So then what happened? You discovered weed and Pink Floyd and never looked back.
Joe Soucheray
Exactly.
Gabriel
And Margaret.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah.
Gabriel
Yeah.
Joe Soucheray
On this day in sports disappointment history,
Chris Reivers
who did we lose to? Joe, on May 13th?
Joe Soucheray
Well, on this day in 1985, obviously this would have been played in the dump. Ron Davis gave up a two run home run to Don Maticly in the top of the ninth. Fifth game in a row or with a ninth inning home run. I was. What's that mean? Well, no, but I mean fifth game in a row with a ninth inning home run. It could have been the Twins might
Chris Reivers
have had some Davis. The way it's written, it means Davis must have given.
Gabriel
You know what time it is.
Joe Soucheray
Throw in the Davis.
Gabriel
Time to throw in the David Davis instead of the towel.
Joe Soucheray
I don't like this trend, but it's been ever thus on this day.
Chris Reivers
Who'd the Wild lose to on May 13th?
Joe Soucheray
Blackhawks, second round. Four games of two.
Gabriel
This is.
Chris Reivers
We'll be able to do that again a year from today.
Joe Soucheray
2014.
Gabriel
We're doing it tonight.
Joe Soucheray
Well, let me tell you something.
Chris Reivers
Yeah, let me tell you something right now.
Gabriel
Tell me. But I feel it.
Kenny Olson
Joe, Let me write this.
Joe Soucheray
They could very well. Very well.
Gabriel
Thank you.
Joe Soucheray
Win this evening and then lose at home on Friday. No, no. They could very well win that.
Chris Reivers
You're making Kenny angry.
Gabriel
I'm one day at a time quick
Joe Soucheray
anecdote because why am I making Kenny angry?
Kenny Olson
You don't need to throw any of that out there, right?
Joe Soucheray
I haven't said anything. I am saying something very neutral.
Kenny Olson
You're in the karma.
Joe Soucheray
No, I'm not. I haven't even used the C word.
Kenny Olson
Stay out of the traffic circle.
Chris Reivers
Yesterday just asked what's the last complete game or something. You asked because what's his name threw one last night over how many complete the Twins radio broadcast do these cool silhouettes of Bramer citing of this day in Twins history. How about this? I don't remember what year they had a suspended game against the Brewers. They played it the following day due to curfew. Bly Levin was a scheduled starting pitcher through the remaining two innings of the suspended game. That pitched the entire night inning game on the same freaking day.
John Height
That's cool.
Joe Soucheray
Really.
Chris Reivers
That was. I never had heard that that before. That is a great how to do. He won both games.
Joe Soucheray
Back then men had arms.
Chris Reivers
Oh, Bert could sling it.
Joe Soucheray
Yep.
Chris Reivers
Didn't he throw you or throw at you in the family park?
Joe Soucheray
No, we. I Caught him.
Chris Reivers
That's what it was.
Joe Soucheray
That's what it was prior to a game in Boston, just for the hell
Chris Reivers
of it, you lost your wedding ring.
Joe Soucheray
Yeah. And.
Gabriel
And you knew he was throwing harder than at you too.
Joe Soucheray
And. And I was eating lunch and I thought, oh. And I said, you know what? I bet it's in that glove. I went back down. Here's how loose things were. I was in the dugout during the national anthem.
Chris Reivers
Oh, wow.
Joe Soucheray
Trying to find it in the glove.
Chris Reivers
And you did.
Joe Soucheray
I did.
Chris Reivers
Is it the same one you got on now?
Joe Soucheray
Yeah.
Kenny Olson
Is it a lot like when you're crawling around on the floor looking for your tooth? Yeah.
Gabriel
It would have been a great cutaway shot to everybody standing at attention. And then here's Bozo looking through a
Chris Reivers
glove to try to find.
Kenny Olson
That ain't my ring. I don't know whose ring that is.
Chris Reivers
Thank you.
Joe Soucheray
I found three in there.
John Height
Yeah.
Joe Soucheray
Say, well, thank you.
Chris Reivers
Yeah, thank you and thank you, Glers. And how about you join your brethren? You know we're number one in Anguilla.
Chris Reivers
Yes.
Joe Soucheray
Gabe was telling me that we're approaching number one in Japan.
Chris Reivers
Are you kidding me?
Joe Soucheray
No. What have 10,000 listers in Japan?
Chris Reivers
We don't even speak Japanese.
Joe Soucheray
No, I don't.
Kenny Olson
So we're big in Japan.
Joe Soucheray
We're big in Japan.
Gabriel
Then we say Don Oro go.
Joe Soucheray
They don't give that reference, John. Japan.
Gabriel
Thank you, Mr. Saito.
Chris Reivers
It is time once again to check in with our guy, Mr. Money Talk. Josh Arnold is with us once again right here in Garage Logic. And now is the time for you to do the same. So do not delay. Do exactly what I did in. Pick up that phone and dial 952-925-5608. That number once again is 952-925-5608. When you call that number, you're going to get Josh and he is there for you for that. Free. Yes, I use the word free. 48 minute financial consultation with absolutely zero obligation. And he will always give you the straight talk. He will never give you the sugar coated advice. And he is on the line with us once again right here in garagelogic. And boy, the President's in China and I know you like to invest in a lot of companies with China. What do we make of all of this?
Josh Arnold
Well, yes, China is one of the focus areas that I have had for decades. You know I've had. The focus areas that I've had are companies around the Internet, leisure related businesses, China related businesses, real assets such as real estate and doing some short term trading. Yes, the president is now in China and he's taken with him executives from Apple. That being Tim Cook who I think should get a Nobel Peace Prize. I think Tim Cook should get a Nobel Peace Prize. A late addition was Jensen Wong of Nvidia. Elon Musk is going. CEOs from Boeing, Qualcomm, Citicorp, Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, Blackrock and others. Oh, and Facebook or Meta are all going. This is a big, big deal. And I think we'll say that Trump is bringing some of the heavy hitters in business with him to China. This is the first a president the two have met, President of the United States, Premier of China have met in well over 10 years. It is a historic summit that hopefully will tone down the temperature between China and the US Improve trade relations between China and the US and hopefully work out a deal with the Strait of Hormuz given China's influence with Iran. A lot can happen over two and a half days phase of this summit and I'll say I am hopeful start of some new beginnings and better relations between China and the US including we'll say toning down some of the tariffs. The direct result right now is companies doing business in China have seen a little pop up. Boeing has seen a little bit of a pop up. He has the potential for selling more airplanes to China. Musk and Tesla, that might be a different story. The Chinese electric vehicles have surpassed Tesla in China. Goldman Sachs, Citicorp, Blackstone probably be looking at using some of their financial might in China and maybe helping China's rising middle class with we'll say savings and investment. The chip companies, whether it's Nvidia or Qualcomm, be pushing for expansion of ship exports to China. So there could be some very strong positives out of that. Additionally, when it comes to China, one of the leading Chinese Internet companies, Alibaba, one of the leading Chinese Internet companies, Alibaba reported this morning this was, this was not necessarily beat and raised, but this was a point where revenues were up but earnings were down based on the amount of spending that Alibaba is doing before building out their artificial intelligence capability. Initially Alibaba's stock was down, but after discussions the amount of money they're spending on artificial intelligence has boosted the stock about 7%. Alibaba is still selling significantly below a high from last year, but again it's one of the leading Chinese Internet related companies, Tencent, another leader in China, primarily on their games but also off their their chat groups. So a big increase in gaming that is very interesting as gaming sales at least here in the United States have been lagging for a little bit. But to see a Chinese company see a pickup in gaming sales that could be big for favorite Apple in terms of of their their game sales and their app app store sales. So that's just a follow on there. Point of this is pay attention to many companies, US Companies that do business in China and any positive news from this summit will add to there to the US companies share prices over time.
Chris Reivers
Excellent advice as always Mr. MoneyTalk. You heard him G ers. Now is the time for you to pick up the phone and make the call for that free 48 minute financial consultation again with zero obligation. And you do that just like I did by dialing 952925608 where you always get straight talk and never ever sugarcoated advice. Josh, once again, thank you so much for the time and the chat. Enjoy the rest of your day. We'll talk to you again tomorrow.
Josh Arnold
Look forward to it. Thank you very much.

In this episode of Garage Logic, host Joe Soucheray and the GL crew (Chris Reivers, Kenny Olson, John Height, Gabriel, and “The Rookie”) tackle the uproar among Minnesota electric vehicle owners who, instead of reaping financial rewards for their eco-friendly choices, are now facing “outrageous” tab renewal fees—sometimes exceeding $2,000. The crew delves into the tangled policies, taxpayer frustrations, and contrasts with other states’ approaches to taxes and public services. The conversation also spirals into broader themes of government spending, bureaucratic growth, local governance sanity, and ongoing resistance to the new state flag.
Email Perspectives from the South
The show opens with emails comparing the laid-back culture and lower taxes in the South (Arkansas, Georgia) with what the hosts view as Minnesota’s high-tax, high-regulation environment.
Minnesota’s New High EV License Tab Fees
(08:01) Joe Soucheray reads a Star Tribune story about a Minneapolis architecture firm owner, Michael Anschel, who bought a used BMW i7 for $100,000 and was stunned by a $2,496 license tab renewal—almost $600 of which was a specific EV surcharge.
The “Virtue Tax” and Government Rationales
Joe and the crew argue that some EV owners expected to be exempt from taxes due to their eco-friendly choices. They push back on this “virtue signaling” and dissect the rationale: as gas tax revenues fall, Minnesota lawmakers have made up the difference by creating new fees on EVs instead of cutting spending.
Sticker Shock and Policy Confusion
Other stories are cited, like Edina’s Sonja Anderson, who paid $1,456 for new tabs for her 2023 model; depreciation formulas now favor slow depreciation so state income from tabs remains high.
Depreciation Changes & Market Impact
(15:00) EVs now depreciate faster (13% more over 5 years than gas cars), but Minnesota law dramatically overstates their value for tab calculations.
Online Forums & Growing Pushback
(16:03) EV owners starting to realize their tab surcharges may far exceed what average Minnesotans pay in gas tax.
Triple Taxation Concerns
Kenny and Joe point out that EV drivers get hit with sales tax on electricity, pay for public charging, and an extra annual EV surcharge.
Political Irony
Political support for these surcharges comes from both parties, with a Republican authoring the bill and a Democrat criticizing the outcome.
Host’s Final Word on EV Adoption
(34:19) “I cannot think of a better candidate for an EV than me…But this seals the deal…even if I lost sense…I don’t want the damn tax bill.” — Joe Soucheray
The show maintains its trademark conversational “common sense” tone, mixing humor, old-school skepticism, and occasional sarcasm. The crew’s banter mocks both policy naivete and big-government trends, with a healthy dose of local color and listener engagement.
