Well, I think we all said, hey, he did a good job. He built the ballpark. He built. He saved the program. If they hadn't. If he hadn't built the new Seabird Field, there would not be any baseball anymore. And he raised all the money.

I just remember you did the show from there when they first opened. Yeah, Yeah, I think. I'm almost positive we did.

Yeah. I mean, it's.

No, no, no. It would have been the Ride with

Roy C. It was only 7 million to start with, but now they've gotten additions and they've improved it.

[Joe]

Yeah, 2012 is when she.

Yeah, and it started bare bones, man. But, you know, Perky popped. I think Perky gave him a half mill.

[Dave]

For the lights?

[Pat]

No, for the big building up there where they have. On the right field line where they have batting. You know, a batting Facility and an office and stuff like that. Perky. I was writing that column that I wrote Saturday morning, hoping it was an either or, but I knew how bad a shape he was in and. And Perk didn't want to talk. He was too upset, so. But Perk played for him. Did. He loved him. Perk loved. I mean, he loved him enough to give him 500,000 for the stadium.

[Dave]

I'm friends with a lot of those guys on social media, and every single one of them says the same thing, how much they loved playing for him.

[Pat]

Yeah.

[Dave]

Yeah.

[Pat]

I sent out a. Ryan LeFever sent me a little photo, an old photo from 1993 of him and Anderson hugging as they were honoring seniors on Senior Day. And I just sent it back out and God almighty, there was hundreds of people looking at that because. Yeah, I mean, he was. You know, John is. Has the reputation as the nicest guy of all time. And he's. I loved him, but he could bitch. When did he take over for Siebert? He took. Okay, John, George Thom Thomas took over for Sievert, who, by the way, I heard yesterday is in hospice down in Arizona.

[Dave]

Oh, no.

[Pat]

George. But George had been Sievert's assistant, and then siebert died in 78. He got sick. And then. And John had been the student manager. He was the MVP of the 77 College World Series team as the student manager. They voted him as the MVP Molitor in that bunch. And then in 78, Siebert got sick, Thomas took over, and then Siebert died. And George Thomas coached him through 81. And he was making so little money that he had to say, you either gotta make this a full time job with a living wage or. I got in. Gil said. I don't know if Gil was in yet. Whoever it was, Marsh Ryman or somebody, no, I couldn't do it. So then John had become the assistant coach for Thomas, and they gave him the head coaching job for 82, 15 grand a year. And then he'd go work a night shift at Emory Air Freight. Wow. To make a living. Yeah, he would. You know, some of these three or four times a week.

[Joe]

These ACC coaches are million dollar a year.

[Pat]

Oh, God, yes. Wes. I think Wes, you know, our own little coach in Georgia, he got. I think he just signed a new contract for 1.6 or something like that.

[Dave]

You know, I got to share this with you because I saw it this morning. You remember A.J. pederson, right?

[Pat]

Oh, yeah, yeah.

[Dave]

So A.J. had a great Facebook post about John. He says it was the fall of 2008 at Siebert Field. Me and Derek were the favorites to start at shortstop and second base. We just didn't know who was going to play where. Before running out to the field on our very first game. We both looked at 14 and he just shrugged his shoulders. I ran out to shortstop. Derek went to second base. In a quick decision that changed the

[Pat]

trajectory of my career.

[Dave]

Derek McCallum, he says I would later learn that when asked 14, told assistant Rob let's have them decide. I went on to play the next 170 games wearing maroon and gold. He told my parents at my recruiting visit that his job was to prepare young men for the next 50 years of their lives. What a great story. Great story.

[Pat]

AJ Foreign Asserer is one of the great guys of all time. He was the assistant forever. He never wanted to be the head coach, but he's a great guy too. Yeah, he was taking it hard to say the least.

[Joe]

The Siebert teams, they won a national title.

[Pat]

Yeah, College baseball was a far different animal. You know, the SEC wasn't this big, powerful, mighty conference. And you know, the west, it was. Southern Cal was the powerhouse. And yeah, they won it in three straight election years. 56, 60 and 64. 4.

[Joe]

I'll be damned.

[Pat]

And the one that they had, the next one that the only time they came close after that was winning senior year. 73. Was it 73. And they had, they had the seven run lead against Southern Cal and they were blowing a Smalley's team. That was Smalley's team and they were blowing that lead. Freddie Lynn was on that team. Smalley was on that team. And when he had gone out to left field to start the night because he'd thrown like 150 pitches and after about the first three, four, five guys, I got on base. Siebert went out there, walked out to left field and asked Winnie if he could come back in the pitch. When he said I can't feel my arm, you know, he just because he pitched like the third time he'd pitched in in a week and he'd throw in an ungodly. Had like 16 or 17 strikeouts.

[Dave]

I have it right here. Dave Winfield dominated the 73 College World Series as both a pitcher and hitter, throwing 17 and a third innings with 29 strikeouts and allowing just one earned run while batting.467.

[Mark Ellis]

Wow.

[Pat]

That people were so paranoid about pitchers hitting that Winnie didn't play and if didn't really hit, didn't play in the field much until his senior year and then, and then they, then they started playing him to get him in the lineup. Did we have a DH in 7? I don't know if the colleges had, you know, the DH came to major leagues in 72, but I don't know when it came to colleges, but yeah.

[Dave]

So did the Padres draft him as a pitcher or did they draft him?

[Pat]

They drafted him and told him that they. I think he was fourth overall. Yeah. And they said if you. They wanted him to be a hitter and he said that's okay, but I don't want to go to the minor leagues. And he never played in the minor leagues. He came, went right to the big leagues. And to be able to survive as a hitter, you know, in that era without ever playing in the minor leagues and having, you know, maybe 200 college at bats at the most, you know, for four years I saw him first time, I saw two, three times. I watched him pitch for Central, though. He had a cheetah. Was one of his coaches, was his catcher. I can't remember. Not Tim's. I don't know what relation to Tim, but he had a cheetah and you had Winnie. And if they had a shortstop that had a half a chance to catch the ball and throw it the first. But beyond that, if he didn't strike them out, they were getting on the base. Central team, they ended up, I think, losing the regional final or something like that. But he'd strike out 14, 15 and then hit a home run and they'd win the game two to one.

[Joe]

You know, is college baseball big in the Southeast in terms of attendance?

[Pat]

Oh, yeah. Look at, look at some of these games. In the spring we have an analyst game. There'll be 6,000 people.

[Joe]

Because there's no hype about a baseball game at the.

[Pat]

No, no, not anymore. Not at all. They. I, I threw in the column I wrote that, you know, each of them back in the day, 70s into the 80s, each of the paper would have a. The go for beat guy. Baseball games in the, in the spring.

[Dave]

Yeah.

[Pat]

You know, now they go to football or whatever and you know, and the TV stations that run out there at least once a home stand and take some video and stuff and give them a little pop. But that's, that's gone away completely.

[Dave]

Well, and that's not just a college baseball thing, Joe. That's a baseball thing. Just the interest as a whole, I think is down significantly.

[Joe]

Not in the sec, the acc, and it's huge.

[Pat]

Yeah. But I think baseball is, has a problem with the youth who just wants to, you know, look at videos and. Because they don't like. But I think it's hurting some. But there's still. You know what? We have people. We have so damn many people now that even if. Even if it used to be 50% of the country cared, now of 10% of the country cares. That's good enough. So. But. And the other thing is, I'm talking about. We worried about the interest in baseball. I mentioned this last week. The Yankees are at the White Sox four games this week, and then at the Cubs, three games. That'll be a big. Yankees are there for seven days and they'll draw 275,000. Wow. You know, so. Because the Wrigley will be 120, you know. Yeah, 120. And then now that the White Sox are good, they're drawn, too.

[Dave]

Are they getting a new ballpark, by the way?

[Pat]

The Whitey's talking about it, but no, nothing.

[Dave]

There's nothing official. Okay.

[Pat]

No, but our guy Ishbia supposedly got a deal to buy them.

[Dave]

That's right.

[Pat]

Jerry is in his 90s now. Reinsdorf, I think he just turned 90. 91.

[Joe]

So what do you think of Jackson Koivan?

[Pat]

Can he play?

[Joe]

Holy mackerel.

[Pat]

I was. I said this today.

[Joe]

Look at that picture. Yeah, you can't. You can't copy that swing. No, no, he's bent over almost to the ground.

[Pat]

He's only 5, 10 and 150. Yeah, but it doesn't. Club speed is the whole thing. But honest to God, this is the truth. Last year, I was laying on the couch one Sunday afternoon. And you know how you watch golf on a Sunday afternoon? You watch three minutes, you change channels, you go. But not a major. You know, just a normal tournament. And this kid showed up and was hitting the ball, and he was on the leaderboard. And I said, holy cow. And I watched quite a bit of him. I couldn't believe how good he was. And, you know, he could have. He was eligible to come out and joined the tour last year, but he wanted to go back and win the national title with his Auburn mates. And they did it. Yes. Yeah. He broke Marikawa's stroke record, too, for the lowest average.

[Dave]

Oh, come, Sergio.

[Joe]

Well, you got a grizzly bear chasing you.

[Pat]

Yes. Right.

[Joe]

And he didn't let that bother you?

[Pat]

No, no. Scotty had a chance to get within two, but I don't think it would have rattled the kid.

[Joe]

I don't think so.

[Pat]

No, he just. I mean, he's played. I. Talking to Hollis. Hollis has had him in the Valspar and has had him. He's known him for four years. He's only 21, playing in the junior tournaments and stuff. He says. Yeah, he's a great kid, you know.

[Dave]

Do you think that a young 20 year old successful SEC golfer with tour aspirations has a lack of companionship in the sec?

[Pat]

I don't know how his girlfriend is.

[Joe]

Well, the only person.

[Pat]

He can't be terribly tall.

[Joe]

His dad ran out there yesterday. But there.

[Dave]

There was no.

[Pat]

They told us that mom was not feeling well. She had some kind of a. She had. She's usually there. But he mentioned that he had. First thing he did was call mom and she was. She was crying and. But he's not a. Doesn't come off as an arrogant kid at all. He just loves to play golf.

[Dave]

Did we sell a lot of tickets?

[Joe]

Well, that was a success.

[Pat]

Oh God, the people showed up. But Hollis, now you gotta remember, I mean like if you sold 20,000 tickets in advance, that's 80,000 for each. Probably counting the practice round, that's 100,000. Hollis said before they teed off, they'd sold 146,000.

[Dave]

No kidding.

[Pat]

Now I gotta tell you, Hollis is the same guy who years ago when I went out to join him for lunch with another group, there were seven people there. And I said, what do you think we got here, Hollis? 35, 40 in this room here. But he had to pad it a lot when he had the seniors, you know, and the seniors drew well early. But he didn't. I mean there are a lot you

[Joe]

didn't have to pad this weekend.

[Pat]

It was 102. Yes. Yeah, 102.

[Joe]

Yep.

[Dave]

It was warm.

[Pat]

You know who was worn out? My 17 year old granddaughter who was working back in the catering and then bringing the catering to the press damped and stuff. But they had no air in the. In the facilities back there. She had the vapors. She had a little bit of the vapors. But yeah, it was. I mean it's. I do not think there's any chance this tournament survives after next year when they go to that new system. Right.

[Joe]

What's the new system?

[Pat]

2020. The big, the big tour will be 20 tournaments with 20 million in prize

[Joe]

money at each tournament.

[Pat]

Yeah, and 3M is the 20. And then they're going to have eight or 10 or 12B squad tournaments. Well, he knows he can't sell a B squad tournament here.

[Joe]

No.

[Pat]

And three of them can't go that high. They're going to have. They have got enough stock. They have enough. Stockholders probably don't like this, you know,

[Joe]

so I don't think much of that course.

[Pat]

No, that's. That. That I was going to say point B is if you're playing 20 features of tournaments, you don't want them. You don't want them to be this.

[Joe]

It's too easy that and it's just not that attractive.

[Pat]

No. And it really needs about a 28 mile an hour wind to defend itself because of it, like it was yesterday. I think I'll hit this one 320 over here and then knock one in about 80 yards. And the only question is on the par fives, is your eagle putt going to be a 30 footer or an 8 footer? That's right. And then the other one, you know, your birdie putts, are they going to be a kick in or 20ft?

[Joe]

I heard a lot of comparisons to Johnny Miller with Koivan swing.

[Pat]

Really?

[Joe]

Where Miller would get his head down and just. Yeah, this guy's head goes so far down when he swing.

[Pat]

Yeah.

[Joe]

Holy mackerel.

[Pat]

It is, it is something, man. It's, you know. Yes. Yesterday, Saturday, he chips in Scotty to. You know, he's playing, he's coming back because he had a terrible back nine on Friday and he's, he's coming back now and then he. Did you see him when he was in a rough and he knocked it in for an eagle there. And then he gets to 14 and you say, wow, you know, he'll be couple behind tomorrow. Then the kid goes out and shoots a 61, you know, and you know, 61 is. There is a 65 or 66 someplace else, but it was a hell of a round. He's a good. Yeah, they had a big crowd, man.

[Joe]

You look at his swing, you look at a lot of pros and you can say to yourself, well, I can kind of do that. I see what they're doing.

[Pat]

That hurts.

[Joe]

You look at this kid. Who can do that?

[Pat]

Yeah. Right. And I. You think being small helps?

[Joe]

Yeah.

[Pat]

Back and everything. Yeah.

[Joe]

If it doesn't, he's gonna be crippled.

[Pat]

Yes. Yeah. Yeah. If he stays away from injury.

[Joe]

Man, I thought tiger put a lot of torque in it, but this guy is unbelievable.

[Pat]

But it, but even with the torque, it looks smooth, doesn't it? Yeah, it's, it's. It's something.

[Joe]

You know what he does, he goes down after it. He goes after it, gets way down there and just.

[Pat]

Yeah, yeah. He's terrific. Yeah, he'll, you know, I wonder if he'll have the gratitude as defending champ. He'll come back. Oh, you gotta come back next year. I think Scotty. This is a one and done for Scotty. Although you got to give him credit, man.

[Joe]

He tried.

[Pat]

You know, the first time they played this Koepka was number one in the world. He's finished 65th. He really put his heart into it. Then, of course, you had Dustin Johnson for a couple of years. And the last time he was here, he hit it in the water on purpose on Friday, so he. No matter what he says. So he could leave and miss the cut.

[Dave]

Well, after seeing the most recent photo of Mr. And Mrs. Johnson in the hot tub, I can't blame him.

[Pat]

Oh, really? Who sent out the photo?

[Dave]

I believe it was an Instagram post. Is he done of Dustin and Paulina?

[Joe]

Okay, Dustin's done.

[Dave]

I want to take the water, too.

[Pat]

Are they trying to. Are they trying to end the rumors of his maybe not being completely faithful?

[Dave]

Oh, I don't know. Maybe.

[Pat]

I don't know. Paulina looked good, though, huh? I'll see how many babies? At least two.

I don't know. Is he done being taken seriously?

[Pat]

I think so.

He's off the. Yeah, he didn't. He like. Was it one of the majors? He popped up for about 10 minutes and then made a bogey? Or was it last? Was it the British just.

I think Koivan got himself in the field for the FedEx.

He said that yesterday. He said he's going to Windham. He said, what are you doing next? He's going to Windham trying to make the FedEx copies.

[Joe]

I think. I think he's got. I think he said, how many players get to start? I think he got in.

[Pat]

Well, he's not in yet.

[Joe]

Right. You got us. Yeah.

You gotta stay there. Yeah. I don't think there's any trouble of him not staying there. He'll be. He'll be in it next week, so. Yeah, it was. It was fun. I guess so.

Well, you didn't wander around outside?

Oh, about 15 minutes worth. It was unbelievable. I'm. You know. You know. One thing, though. It's hot and you can't stand it, but it keeps you limber. Was 102.

Hour later I'm going out the car and look and I hear it and I turn it off. We almost had a relapse of. I can't trust my memory anymore.
