Marriage and money go hand in hand. Get the money wrong and the relationship will start feeling that pressure real quick. First, combine your mindset about money. Once you're married, it shouldn't be mine and yours. It's ours. One team, one dream when couples start keeping score. I paid this, you paid that. That's when tension starts creeping into the house. Second, don't let income differences create power trips. One person might make more at different stages of life. So what? A bigger paycheck doesn't make somebody the CEO of the marriage. The goal isn't competition. It's partnership. The money should move like a unit. Third, keep spending transparent. Sneaky purchases and hidden accounts turn small swipes into big arguments. Real talk. If you feel like you gotta hide it, you probably shouldn't be buying it. Fourth, set expectations early and communicate often. Don't assume your partner thinks like you about money. Talk about the plan, the bills, the goals, where the money is going and where the future is headed. And fifth, get on the same page about lifestyle. Are we luxury or are we budget? Are we outside every weekend or cooking at home? Stacking savings. Two different lifestyles under one roof will drain a relationship fast because at the end of the day, money problems are one of the biggest stress points in marriage. But when couples communicate, stay transparent and move like a team. Money can strengthen the marriage instead of tearing it apart. So the real question is, are you managing the money together or letting the money start? Managing the marriage. I'm Damon Carr, your money coach and tax pro.
