Listen up. Damon Carr here and I'm gonna keep it all the way real with you. The retirement game changed and a lot of people still playing by old rules. Back in the day, retirement was built on what experts called the three legged stool. Those three legs were Social Security, pensions and personal savings for baby boomers and their parents. That system actually worked. You stayed at one company for 30 years, retired with a pension check for life, collected Social Security, owned your home outright and lived fairly comfortable. But today, that old stool is missing a leg, maybe two. Pensions disappeared. For most workers, companies killed them and handed you a 401k and said, good luck. Social Security alone isn't enough. Average check is about $1,900 a month. Try living on that. And many Americans don't have enough saved. Median 401k for folks in their 60s is under $190,000. That ain't 30 years of income. That's maybe five years if you're careful. So now we got a new retirement income model. Today's retirement looks more like continued work, 401ks and IRAs. Social Security, rental income, side hustles, investments, and part time income. Here's the cold part. Many retirees are still working not because they want to, but because they have to. I talked to 68 year olds bagging groceries, driving Uber. Not for fun, for survival. A lot of people assume their 401k would carry the whole load, but the math don't. Math. You can't pull $4,000 a month for 25 years off $190,000. It runs out. That means retirement today ain't just about quitting work. It's about creating multiple streams of income before you stop working. The new retirement formula is less about one company taking care of you and more about you building your own financial ecosystem. Translation, you better have more than one check coming in. You need your money working while you sleep. Dividends, rent, royalties, business income. You need skills that pay after 60. You need to kill debt before you retire because debt in retirement is a killer. Don't wait till 65 to figure this out. Start building those legs now while you still got time and energy. I'm Damon Carr, financial planner, money coach, tax pro, and real talk specialist. And I'm telling you straight, the old stool is broken. Build your own chair.
