Title: Fearsome Magics Subtitle: The New Solaris Book of Fantasy 2 Author: Jonathan Strahan (editor) Narrator: Ros Gentle, Chris MacDonnell, Jay Rodan, Lauren Irwin, Michael Welch, Alexandra Harris Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 54 mins Language: English Release date: 12-08-17 Publisher: Recorded Books Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: From sorcerous bridges that link worlds to the simple traditions of country folk; from the mysterious natures of twins to the dangerous powers of obligation and contract. Laden with perils for both the adventurous and the unsuspecting, magic is ultimately a contradiction: endlessly powerful but never without consequence, and rigidly defined by rules of its own making. Award-winning Jonathan Strahan brings together some of the most exciting and popular writers working in fantasy today to dig into that contradiction, and present you with the strange, the daunting, the mathematical, the unpredictable, the deceptive and above all the fearsome world of magic. Includes stories by Garth Nix, K J Parker, Tony Ballantyne, James Bradley, Isobelle Carmody, Frances Hardinge, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Ellen Klages, Justina Robson, Christopher Rowe, Robert Shearman, Karin Tidbeck, Genevieve Valentine, and Kaaron Warren. Members Reviews: Five Stars Fairly decent collection of short stories, kept me occupied during my downtimes while on vacation recenlty Two Stars Not half as much fun to read as Fearsome Journeys, far more miss than hit. ENTERTAINING FANTASY ANTHOLOGY Fearsome Magics is the follow-up anthology to Jonathan Strahanâs Fearsome Journeys. Here fourteen tales set out to explore the essential element of all fantasy: MAGIC! There are novellas looking at magic in other worlds, magic in the form of mathematical formulas, magic letters, magic superstitions, and even magic chairs. And while there were a few stories that seemed a bit out of place in the anthology, Mr. Strahan generally did a great job of putting together an entertaining anthology, but like every reader, I had my favorites â some that entertained me, some that touched me, some that horrified me, and some that just made me think. âHome is the Haunterâ by Garth Nix is a story that entertained me. The focus here is on Sir Hereward and his magical puppet Master Fitz. These two have been ordered by their liege lord to transport a huge cannon to an allied kingdom by the (supposedly) shorter route of crossing an endless steppes-like plain. Naturally, though, things go awry when they stumble upon a strange tower set beside a shallow sea and discover that they are now the intended victims for a ghostly goddess called the Hag of the Shallows. The tale that follows has lots of world building and spends a great deal of time fleshing out our two protagonists. Sure it could have been more focused, but other than that, âHome of the Haunterâ was a fairly entertaining tale. âGrigoriâs Solutionâ by Isobelle Carmody was a story that touched me. Here an old academic is watching a late night American program when he realizes that the end of the world is announced. As the story progresses, Ms. Carmody deftly crafts a tale where a mathematical equation sets about the end of the universe and explores how a math deficient population would be slow to understand the significance of it all before finally giving into their grief and abandoning civilization and its social norms. Great idea coupled with some excellent writing. âThe Changelingâ by James Bradley was a tale that horrified me, not in abject terror but rather in the terrible choices people will make.

Title: The Cinder Witch Subtitle: A Tale of The School of Spells & War Author: Morgon Newquist Narrator: Meghan Crawford Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 38 mins Language: English Release date: 10-25-17 Publisher: Silver Empire Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery Publisher's Summary: Months ago, Alis joined with her new friend Cahan to fight a dragon beneath the School of Spells and War. Now she fights something altogether different: fame. Worse, her newfound notoriety has resulted in a mission to the far north. As if it weren't bad enough that it's so cold, she also finds herself in a tiny village whose residents innately distrust spellcasters of all kinds. Yet they tolerate her because she comes with Cahan - and because something is threatening their children. Can Alis and Cahan save them? The School of Spells & War is an ongoing collection of old fashioned sword-and-sorcery adventure stories following a wizard and warrior duo as they galavant across the continent of Thillon. Good-humored, powerful warrior Cahan and intelligent, skilled wizard Alis work together to serve their university, the school of spells and war, by battling dragons, investigating plots against the king, hunting witches, and dealing with the ongoing threat of the ancient and mysterious Formless. Members Reviews: Ghosts, Magic, and Heart. A haunted village in a forest of perpetual winter . . . a hidden realm that is a mirror image to our own . . . and a malevolent spirit of immense magical power with an equally immense tale of heartbreak and loss . . . this is what Alis and Cahan have to contend with in The Cinder Witch. Sent by the school to the remote northern village of Ashfern in the Winterwood, Alis the wizard and Cahan the warrior must put an end to the haunting of the mayor's daughter. And while the two of them make a formidable team, this is one battle that Alis must handle largely on her own. The Cinder Witch advances Mrs. Newquist's broader narrative while providing a fun, self-contained story. But more importantly, Mrs. Newquist plays with these fantasy tropes and provides HEART. We learn more about Alis, and watch her develop from a somewhat cranky, studious recluse into a brave adventurer willing to risk whatever it takes to do what's right, even if she feels bad about it. If swords and sorcery fantasy is your think, check out the School of Spells & War series. They're quick, episodic reads written with a deft touch and enough gentle humor that doesn't take itself TOO seriously, but have a love of the genre. I am looking forward to reading further installments, especially given that the shadowy Formless, last seen in book 1, are still at large . . . Fame has its drawbacks: you are tapped for the harder and more dangerous problems... This trip to the cold and distant Winterwood was hard enough to begin with... so of course there is something dangerously awry when Alis and Cahan get there. Something that will demand more than just logic, wizardry, or swordsmanship. Four Stars Good retelling. See my full review at injusticegamer. quick reviews 2.1

Title: Short Tails from Space Subtitle: Short Stories from Outer-Space, Book 1 Author: James Mullins, Eirca Huffman, Michael Emmering Narrator: James McSorley Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 37 mins Language: English Release date: 10-25-17 Publisher: Book Pubo Inc Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: A collection of short stories that have a space opera feel to it. This short but sweet audiobook offers listeners a glimpse of storytelling, there are several timelines in this book because of the short stories, and because there were multiple writers working on this project. The best way to set up this book is to think of it as a dream, and how sometimes dreams just jump from one thing to the next. That is how this book works. The book starts off on board the spaceship Maya in the year 2392 where there is lift off of space shuttle starship Maya, and from there these short stories have a mind of their own. Members Reviews: More Stolen Content I presume? Given Emmering's history of plagiarism ("In the Sky" is basically composed of stolen stories that aren't cited and violate the actual author's licenses), I'd say this is a hard pass. Don't support shady business by enabling this tool.

Title: Dark Elves, Dragons, and Dinosaurs Author: Amanda Lash Narrator: Mara J. Eden Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 49 mins Language: English Release date: 08-17-17 Publisher: Hyperbolic Productions Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: Disclaimer: This is a work intended for a mature audience over 18. It contains adult themes. All characters are over 18. This is a humorous, episodic novel of dark fantasy and science fiction, composed of the four novellas Amy and the Ankylosaurus, Helen and the Evil Elves of the Elder Gods, Sithe in the City, and Dragon vs Dinosaur. It begins when Magnus creates a device to open portals to other quantum universes so he can show his ex-girlfriend, Amy, real dinosaurs. This goes awry when Amy goes through the portal and he has to rescue her, accompanied by his fellow scientist Helen, Amy's best friend. Then Helen decides she wants an elf boyfriend, and they find themselves trapped by the Evil Elves of the Elder Gods. This leads to a dark elf priestess exploring New York City. Then, at last, the group find themselves reuniting with a dinosaur and combating a good dragon for the sake of the evil Cthulhu-worshiping dark elves. Members Reviews: Very funny evil w/some adult bits More a collection of 4 short stories with the same characters. Pros: Laugh out loud funny in a lot of places (Magnus dislike of teleportation for example). Well fleshed out main characters, who are enjoyable/relatable even though most of them are amoral at best and full on evil at worst. Probably from Amy's pure goodness to balance them out. Action is pretty good, and character dialogueâ is generally great. Adult sections are also generally well done. Cons: Book is a little disjointed due to it being a collection of stories. Couple of grammar errors need to be fixed (quite low for an indie book).

Title: Cyberweird Stories Subtitle: A Contagious Collection of Short Stories and Poems Author: D.C. Lozar Narrator: Alexander Doddy Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 18 mins Language: English Release date: 08-14-17 Publisher: D.C. Lozar Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: From robots with contagious diseases to space explorers who stumble upon the birthplace of the Cthulhu, these stories twist horror and science into sexy pulp fiction that's hard to escape. Showcasing fantastic stories in which printed people colonize planets, augmented reality is used to punish criminals and take over corporations, and futures where cyberpunk adolescence rule cities where all the adults have disappeared; this is a collection of unique peepholes into the future of our planet and species. Members Reviews: Wonderfully weird and unique stories!!! Cyberweird Stories A Contagious Collection of Short Stories and Poems By: D.C. Lozar Narrated by: Alexander Doddy This an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. I really loved this book! It was so creative and unique! The stories varied in length and type from silly Billy Goat Gruff trial to a story about a robot with a contagious robot disease. Futuristic nursing home tale to poetry. All of these were wonderful and I would give each of the stories a 5 star rating. I have never read this author's work before and I am now a fan. This book was so great! The narrator was awesome! He had to do so many different voices and sounds and he performed it so well! One of the best narrators I have listened to! Wonderful! Cyberweird? Cyber awesome! This is a wonderful collection of shorts/poems and more. Marketed as weird but the tales are amazing. I would have purchased this book for the poem about 9/11 in its own and the rest is just a bonus. The author truly Captivated the feeling of the country and the vibe of the times in a truly captivating poem. Get it for that and enjoy the bonus provided by the rest of the stories. You will Not be disappointed. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. An Entertaining Menagerie of Stories... ...and yeah there's poems, too. Overall, I enjoyed the collection even if I did find it a bit disjointed at times. The best stories are those at the beginning which begin innocently enough, but become clear that they're part of a larger, more complex and dangerous world. These stories ultimately culminate in a very intense, if flawed, climax. I imagine some readers would like to see these stories continue and I would entertain the thought of seeing these stories expanded and given their own collection or even worked into a uniquely styled novel. If the collection had ended there I would have probably given this five stars and recommended it without hesitation. There are just some stories that don't fit into, what I presume, is supposed to be a collection of strange and science fiction stories. That intense climax I mentioned earlier? It's followed up by a fairy tale courtroom story. There's a kitschy post 9/11 poem ripped straight from my Mom's kitchen wall mixed in here as well? I could have done without the poems in general especially since they don't seem to support the theme of this collection. The whole last third loses the unity of the first two-thirds and seems to bounce around much more. Some stories are better than others, but I enjoyed them more often than not. The narrator grew on me after a bit, though I sometimes felt his tone to be a bit too jovial for some of the stories and scenes he was reading.

Full cast of narrators includes Arthur Morey, Margy Moore, and Stefan Rudnicki. Members Reviews: More Great Short Stories From The Master of Science Fiction Acclaimed science fiction author Ben Bova has completed his trilogy of short stories with Volume 3. Known for his attention to detail and "hard science", Bova's stories contain believable characters and well-thought-out storylines. Fans of Bova will immediately recognize the names of characters as well as specific locations, such as Selene-the base on the Moon, and the Rock Rats in the asteroid belt. I've read many of Bova's books over the years, and this final volume in the "Best of" series is classic Bova. Highly recommended.

Title: Resurrections Subtitle: A Short Story Collection Author: Chris Philbrook Narrator: James Anderson Foster Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 26 mins Language: English Release date: 07-13-17 Publisher: Chris Philbrook Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 18 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: A boy and his father walk on the shore of an ocean filled with bloody spears cast off from a war between gods. A father travels back in time over and over, unable to rescue the mother of his child, but then.... A mischievous satyr lurking in a dungeon has a field day with trespassing adventurers. A mirror sits in the lobby of an ancient palace, and twice a year under the light of the moon you can walk through it to another world. But at what cost? These tales and more are in Resurrections, a compilation of short stories written by Chris Philbrook, author of Tesser: A Dragon Among Us, Adrian's Undead Diary, and The Kinless Trilogy. Members Reviews: Awesome! I reviewed this once before for the Kindle version and my opinion still hasn't changed. If you've read Chris' work there is plenty for you to enjoy. If you're unfamiliar with his work, I hope you'll enjoy it just the same. My two favorite stories from before were Yerba Mate and Steve Goes to the City. While still favorites, I feel it would be a disservice to leave out What Would You Do?, The Sea of Spears and Scars. I also feel it would be a disservice to not mention the wonderful work of James Foster. I've been a big fan of his since I started listening to Audio Books and he didn't disappoint me with his narration. An amazing adventure of stories... I can honestly say this really shows the amazing range of talent Chris Philbrook has. From aliens to zombies to goblins to knights to time travel...this collection has it all. I laughed, was grossed out, was scared and I cried my eyes out... what more can you ask for in one collection?? Resurrections is truly an enjoying, must read adventure! Philbrook has done it again!!! What did you like best about this story? This is a collection of a bunch of short stories. I love it and hate it at the same time. What I mean is Philbrook sucks you to a story quickly and I love that part. I hate the part where it ends and he always leaving you wanting more of that story line. Then the next adventure starts and the roller coaster starts all over again. What about James Anderson Fosters performance did you like? James Foster is a true master. He nails all the characters and his cadence makes you feel the story. You feel what the character feel. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? There was so many great parts of the different stories, but my favorite is where my friend was used for a story in a series that I love. Nahuel you are the man! An excellent compilation of short stories! What did you love best about Resurrections? I loved to see a glimps of some of the many worlds that live inside the mind of Chris Philbrook. I loved hearing stories with new and different characters, and the stories with familiar and beloves characters. What was one of the most memorable moments of Resurrections? I absolutely loved the time travel story.

Title: Once upon a Dystopia Author: Mileva Anastasiadou Narrator: Scott ODell Format: Unabridged Length: 41 mins Language: English Release date: 07-11-17 Publisher: Cosmic Teapot Publishing Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: If someone observed us from afar, they could claim that our civilization was a civilization of walls. That was its main purpose. Such observers would likely not be able to explain why. I cannot either. Walls do not protect. They just trap and kill. Three short stories about a dystopic future, about people turning into machines, about walls and fences, about the way history works. Three short stories about now. Members Reviews: Speculative fiction A very strange collection of tales. I am not sure what the author was trying to relay and I am not sure that I understood any of it! The narrator spoke much too slowly for me and I had to speed up my device to 1.25x in order to listen. Once Upon a Dystopia This short book contains 3 dystopian stories that are very good.I liked the first one best.Scott Odell does a nice job narrating.I was provided this book free by the author, narrator or publisher. Great Narrator Horrible Story This was flat and boring! The narrator was great though. Totally not interesting. I couldn't finish, and it isn't even an hour. Two Great Short Stories If you could sum up Once upon a Dystopia in three words, what would they be? Great discussion stories. Which character as performed by Scott ODell was your favorite? The woman ghost. He did it with such feeling. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? When the Doctor is speaking to the ghost. Any additional comments? I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Title: When We Were Young Subtitle: Short Stories from Panamindorah, Volume 3 Author: Abigail Hilton Narrator: Lauren Harris, Rish Outfield, Renee Chambliss Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 35 mins Language: English Release date: 05-03-17 Publisher: Pavonine Books Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 24 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: Everybody was young once. Even the most confident people were once uncertain, the most ferocious were once frightened, and the most competent were once naive. We all met our best friends somewhere and not always under the best conditions. In this collection of short stories from the world of Panamindorah, Silveo meets Basil, Silas meets Percy, Anaroo meets Gwain, Gus meets Silas, and Gerard prepares to meet Thessalyn. Dakar and Theseus are tiny children, caught up in the machinations of others; Glossy makes impossibly difficult decisions for herself and her child; and Marlie struggles with the ghosts of her past and present. All of them will find their places in the world, often far from where they started. For the moment, however, they are doing everything for the first time. These stories will make the most sense if you have heard The Guild of the Cowry Catchers series and The Scarlet Albatross. However, if you haven't listened to one or both of those stories, you'll still understand most of what's going on. The titles in this collection are: "Harbor Wave", "Dark Heart", "Quarantine", "Taking Tricks", "Anaroo of the Defiance", "Letter of Reference", "Chimera", "Fire From Heaven", and "Ghosts". Members Reviews: Delightful ear candy As a long time fan of the Guild of the Cowery Catchers, it was delightful to hear another round of backstories on some of my favorite characters, and new ones from the Refugee Series. The audio quality, mixing and narrative performances are top notch and music that is used is not distracting or to loud. I especially enjoyed the backstories of both Anaroo and Theseus as I have been curious about their childhoods and found some of the explanations Abby offers immensely gratifying. felt like good times with old friends.. What did you love best about When We Were Young? It has been long ago that i listened to the Guild of the Cowry Catchers and The Prophet of Panamindorah (early podcaster listener) . And just listened to the The Scarlet Albatross . it was so nice to revisit those characters from time gone by and truly made me ache for more interaction with them in the future What did you like best about this story? I just love the world that abigail has opened up for us to enjoy Have you listened to any of the narratorss other performances before? How does this one compare? i felt narration was great .and kepted story well on pace Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? yes Any additional comments? I might have profited by listening to this befor listening to the Scarlet Albatross as my memory of those characters were a little foggy...but truly loved it A short story home run These stories are really good. In fact, I think this may be Abigail's best shorts to date. Abigail has really honed her story telling and created an incredible universe. You do not need prior knowledge of the stories to read these. Unlike most short stories, you can actually fillip on any of the characters her in other books. If you have read the other books, it's fun background that fills out the universe even more. The production is also very well done. Abigail usually has really good voice talent, but it is sometimes a bit noisy. This was clear and clean.
