Title: The Gambler Subtitle: How Penniless Dropout Kirk Kerkorian Became the Greatest Deal Maker in Capitalist History Author: William C. Rempel Narrator: Fred Sanders Format: Unabridged Length: 13 hrs and 2 mins Language: English Release date: 01-23-18 Publisher: Harper Audio Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders Publisher's Summary: The rags-to-riches story of one of America's wealthiest and least-known financial giants, self-made billionaire Kirk Kerkorian - the daring aviator, movie mogul, risk taker, and business tycoon who transformed Las Vegas and Hollywood to become one of the leading financiers in American business. Kerkorian combined the courage of a World War II pilot, the fortitude of a scrappy boxer, the cunning of an inscrutable poker player, and an unmatched genius for making deals. He never put his name on a building, but when he died, he owned almost every major hotel and casino in Las Vegas. He envisioned and fostered a new industry - the leisure business. Three times he built the biggest resort hotel in the world. Three times he bought and sold the fabled MGM Studios, forever changing the way Hollywood does business. His early life began as far as possible from a place on the Forbes List of Billionaires when he and his Armenian immigrant family lost their farm to foreclosure. He was four. They arrived in Los Angeles penniless and moved often, staying one step ahead of more evictions. Young Kirk learned English on the streets of LA, made pennies hawking newspapers, and dropped out after eighth grade. How he went on to become one of the richest and most generous men in America - his net worth as much as $20 billion - is a story largely unknown to the world. That's because what Kerkorian valued most was his privacy. His very private life turned to tabloid fodder late in life when a former professional tennis player falsely claimed that the 85-year-old billionaire fathered her child. In this engrossing biography, investigative reporter William C. Rempel digs deep into Kerkorian's long-guarded history to introduce a man of contradictions - a poorly educated genius for deal-making, an extraordinarily shy man who made the boldest of business ventures, a careful and calculating investor who was willing to bet everything on a single roll of the dice. Unlike others of his status and importance, Kerkorian made few public appearances and strenuously avoided personal publicity. His friends and associates, however, were some of the biggest names in business, entertainment, and sports - among them Howard Hughes, Ted Turner, Steve Wynn, Michael Milken, Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Elvis Presley, Mike Tyson, and Andre Agassi. When he died in 2015, two years shy of the century mark, Kerkorian had outlived many of his closest friends and associates. Now, Rempel meticulously pieces together revealing fragments of Kerkorian's life, collected from diverse sources - war records, business archives, court documents, news clippings, and the recollections and recorded memories of longtime pals and relatives. In The Gambler, Rempel illuminates this unknown, self-made man and his inspiring legacy as never before. Members Reviews: A REAL GAMBLER Enjoyable easy read of the life and business deals of kirk kerkorian. a real gambler and successful businessman. The creator of the mega resort in Las Vegas. A TRUE LEGEND! Five Stars When is the movie coming out! Out standing book! A great great story. This is a rich story that would have been lost without the diligent, extraordinary reporting of William Rempel. Kirk Kerkorian didn't like publicity so he left behind very little in the way of autobiographical material.

Title: The Z Factor Subtitle: My Journey as the Wrong Man at the Right Time Author: Subhash Chandra, Pranjal Sharma Narrator: Vivek Vijayakumaran Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 29 mins Language: English Release date: 01-08-18 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders Publisher's Summary: The pioneer who gate-crashed his way to the top, Subhash Chandra, the promoter of Essel/Zee Group, is an unlikely mogul. Hailing from a small town in Haryana, where his family ran grain mills, Chandra has been a perennial outsider, repeatedly aiming high and breaking into businesses where he was considered an interloper. Starting work as a teen to pay off family debts, Chandra had to rely on bluff, gumption, and sheer hard toil to turn things around. A little bit of luck and political patronage saw him make a fortune in rice exports to the erstwhile USSR. Always a risk taker, Chandra then had the vision of getting into broadcasting early, even as established media players failed to see its potential. His Zee TV, India's first private Indian TV channel, changed the rules of the game and tickled the fancy of a public starved of entertainment. Several gutsy initiatives followed, though not all of them were successful. Chandra's attempts to launch satellite telephony and a cricket league came a cropper. But the man continues to reinvent himself; he is now also focusing on infrastructure and smart cities. This is an unusually candid memoir of a truly desi self-made businessman who came to Delhi at age 20 with 17 rupees in his pocket. Today he has a net worth of $6.3 billion and annual group revenues of about $3 billion. Members Reviews: Excellent book Must read for an entrepreneur. It's amazing how someone can start zee tv without knowing anything about media business. Highly recommended The Zee - illionaire : Dr Subhash Chandra Oh Wow, pretty interesting life story of one of India's "Billionaires" on the Forbes Richest List, Media Tycoon and Founder of Zee TV, Mr (Dr) Subhash Chandra. Many may not know that he has been and is part of a large joint family, and that is how he has managed the multiple businesses he has ventured in. And what a list - from Trading to Rice Exports to Manufacturing to Laminated Tubes to Amusement Park to Satellite TV and Media - and many more. And most by default, some by design. Losses, profits, growth, downfalls, rise again, dealings with "The High and Mighty" before he himself became one, Subhash Chandra's life and business story is gripping, visionary, entertaining, inspiring, confusing, incredible - and often all of these at the same time. He does come across - both in the book and in real life - as someone who has both feet firmly planted on the ground and is in touch with both the big sweeping vision and the minutest details. There is a famous quote in Hindi which can probably sum up the book and the life story described in it : " Kuch Bhee Ho Sakta Hai " ( Actually, Anything can happen) Great narrative and first-hand business insights Insightful, easy to read, great story-like narrative. A first-hand inside look at what it took to build Zee and Subhash Chandra's various other businesses. Very candid and in the first-person. My favorite parts are how he deals with various business dilemmas and what he goes through personally as he is dealing with them. Bonus points: got to meet him at the book signing in New York!

Title: Sergeant to CEO Subtitle: A Foster Kid's Lessons in Family, Fidelity, and Financial Success Author: Sean P. Jensen Narrator: Michael Broderick Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 41 mins Language: English Release date: 01-03-18 Publisher: SNC Groups, LLC Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders Publisher's Summary: Climbing his way out of the foster care system and into the Marine Corps, Sean P. Jensen rebuilt his life to include a loving wife, family, and the rediscovery of a Hawaiian heritage that illuminated his past, his character, and his way forward. Part of that way forward was founding Polu Kai Services, LLC, in 2002, a construction and environmental services company that he grew from an initial investment of $1,600 to an Inc. 5000 competitor that handles millions of dollars of government contracts. Though Polu Kai Services, LLC, endured trouble that seemed terminal several times, Sean leveraged his military training to navigate his fledgling company through those rough storms and into clearer seas. Members Reviews: Vets need to read it As a vet, I like this. I did the dumb crap and smart crap. I can say it was refreshing to see; because I was giving the advice and ignored it. Now years later I see the wisdom in the advice that was handed to me, and more so in all the CEO's and successful people who reference the art of war. But to see him take advice and become successful is something I hope younger people take in where I did not; like the old vet who bought a rolex at the advice of his sgt in 60's for 120$, now worth 160k$. I was dumb, ignored advice he took in and went with, use his lessons and become the next big name in fortune. Listen to what he has to say, all I can say. I sure picked a great time to read it I downloaded this book 6 monthd ago. I have been struggling in mynown business. I sure picked a great time to read it. Sean's life lessons helped remind me why I started my own business. . Excellent book about overcoming advertisty and winning the game. As a Marine and businessman I can totally relate to how Sean runs his business. The Marine Corps taught me mord than I thought. The never surrender attitude ingrained in us during boot camp has carried over in life. A must read for anyone thinking about opening a business. Great life lessons. I'm looking forward to your next book. Sergeant to CEO is well worth the read for any business professional... Sergeant to CEO is well worth the read for any business professional regardless of whether they served in the Military or not. That said, this book will resonate well with anyone who has worn the uniform of the Armed Forces of the United States. Sean captures the essence of leadership and demonstrates vividly how an NCO or Officer can go from leading a team, squad, platoon or company to owning and operating a successful business enterprise in the private sector. For me, the most transferable skills that I left the Army with were leadership, operations, and logistics management. However Sean takes this to a higher level by sharing how he took the intestinal fortitude that the United States Marine Cops. instilled in him, out of the Marine Corps and into the private sector. The hallmark of the Warrior Class is the drive and determination to see the mission through to a successful outcome despite what others may see as impossible odds.Sergeant to CEO is a great read that imparts wisdom while entertaining the reader. I found myself smiling as I read Sergeant to CEOSergeant to CEO: A Foster Kid's Lessons in Family, Fidelity, and Financial Successand I have recommended it to all of the upcoming leaders in our organization.

Wild Narrator: Adam Paul Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 55 mins Language: English Release date: 12-28-17 Publisher: Cameron E. Wild Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders Publisher's Summary: Nomad Trader is a liberal contemporary autobiographical novel that follows a hedge fund trader seeking to discover the fabled truth in markets and in life. In this daring exposé of the hedge fund world, Nomad Trader chronicles an insider's account of the tyranny and the struggle that beset all who seek victory in financial markets. From media manipulation and corporate fraud, to terrorist attacks and blowing up the trading floor, join Damon as he journeys to the darkest corners of the mind in the search for the ultimate truth. But will it be enough to survive at Perdu, the toughest hedge fund of them all? Members Reviews: A pretty fun ride I have some modest prior exposure to markets, exchanges and trading. I found this easy to follow overall. I deeply appreciate this book being about what it claims to be about, rather than the painfully common forays into juvenile, exhibitionist vulgarity and shallowness the lower-quality (such as the Wolf of Wall Street) books rub our noses in. The author is a fairly decent guy, with an honest intellectual interest in all aspects and tools of trading. He also shows himself to be all too human and flawed, drunkenly injuring himself severely at one point, letting himself be sucked into partying and vicious hangovers at another, without dwelling too long on such things. The author's psychological bottoming-out in early-mid-story, and the hedge-fund's exotic eye-brain procedure, are weird, and I'm not sure what to make of those. But there is overall just enough color and human story to keep the trading sequences fresh. As an example of financial stuff I liked, the insider's view of the Quant Quake of 2007 was very well done, and not heard much of elsewhere. Viewing history through the lens of one transaction after another, with money (and a trader's future) riding on each move, works vividly.

Rockefeller: A Life from Beginning to End Author: Hourly History Narrator: Bridger Conklin Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 12-06-17 Publisher: Hourly History Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders Publisher's Summary: John D. Rockefeller, the wealthiest man of all time, amassed a fortune as he led the Standard Oil Company to an unprecedented position of power in the industrial markets. In addition to being a successful businessman, he was also a generous philanthropist. But somewhere between the money he earned and the money he gave away lies a mystery that remains unsolved. How could someone so generous have been so hated in his time? How could someone so successful have been so despised by the public, the press, and the government? Was Rockefeller a villain or a hero? The truth is that he was both. Inside you will read about.... In an era which saw American businessmen accrue unprecedented power and wealth by means of practices that would later be judged illegal by the Supreme Court, Rockefeller saw his opportunities as both a gift from God and a responsibility to the public, with a dash of Darwinian survival tactics thrown in for good measure. Todays captains of industry may not use the same techniques that Rockefeller employed, but in many ways, the bold entrepreneurs who dominate the stock market and the headlines are apprentices to his ruthless genius. Members Reviews: A short treatise on John D Rockefeller the man I really enjoyed reading the e-book John D. Rockefeller: A Life From Beginning to End. John D Rockefeller was a very interesting individual he was a ruthless competitor in the marketplace, but he was also highly religious. He conducted the businesses he ran by the rules in the United States at a time when creating monopolies was more or less acceptable. From a young child, he was taught religious values that included tithing and giving away your wealth was a godly practice. This book provided me many insights on the man John the Rockefeller. Of course, if I want to know more about the man I have to look at other books. More to his life than before heard of His active aid to the black communities showed the family desire to better black lives. His contribution to colleges helped train future generations. The college for women gave them ability to be strong to survive in modern economics. Food and aid to allies was much needed. Saving of Jewish scientists lives was great benefit to humanity. Robber Baron? Rockefeller knew how to see the future and capitalize on it by dominating the competition. An avid abolitionist, he did support African-American programs. As a philanthropist, he supported education, medicine and so many other causes. A Truly Remarkable Man. Very well written. Talked about Rockefeller's humble beginnings to the richest man in the world. I don't think greed motivated him, I think doing his best for his family and company was his true motivation. A really remarkable man. Recommend. Informative and enjoyable! Most people know the name but not the man. This introduces us to the man! Recommend.

Title: Raising the Bar Subtitle: Integrity and Passion in Life and Business - The Story of Clif Bar, Inc. Author: Lois Lorentzen, Gary Erickson Narrator: Richard Harries Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 59 mins Language: English Release date: 12-05-17 Publisher: Recorded Books Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders Publisher's Summary: In April of 2000, Gary Erickson turned down a $120 million offer to buy his thriving company. Today, instead of taking it easy for the rest of his life and enjoying a luxurious retirement, he's working harder than ever. Why would any sane person pass up the financial opportunity of a lifetime? Critic Reviews: "I applaud the efforts of Gary and Clif Bar to develop business practices that promote an ethic of global responsibility." (Mikhail S. Gorbachev, Green Cross International) Members Reviews: Clif Bar is AMAZiNG. Enjoyable and enlightening read. A must read for anyone who leads a company, people, or just wants to restore their faith that a different kinds of company still exists. Clif Bar is one of them......walking the talk and leading the way way before being sustainable was a buzz word. People and planet before profits from the get go. Committing to stay privately owned, not selling out for the almighty dollar. So refreshing, so enlightened...just SO GOOD. I will never purchase a bar other than Clif (Luna, Kid Zbar). I know my dollar is fueling the greater not just good tasting, healthy food. Wish I had found this book earlier in my career and required my CEOs to read it. More need to. Great Book! I must say I am very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this book! Not only is the publishing/design unlike any book I have seen, the content is AMAZING! I figured this would be an interesting book to read, not expecting it to be the page turner it was for me! Gary really tells the full story of Clif Bar not only from the POV of outsiders looking into the company, but what took place inside his own mind and in his own experiences. Not only does this book feature a fun/very interesting collection of Gary's personal stories, but also an entire business philosophy that IS working inside the Clif company. A very good read that I would recommend to outdoor enthusiasts, business people, and Clif lovers alike. Worth the money!!! A Book for Clif Bar Enthusiasts If you're ardently concerned about what you eat - and like Clif bars, this book is for you. I've eaten Clif bars for years and recently felt led to revaluate my health/energy bars. I emailed queries to several health/energy bar manufacturers concerning various ingredients (i.e., non-GMO and organic). I was disappointed - all except my email to Clif Bar. At about the same time, I came across this book on Amazon, while shopping for 'priced right' Clif bars. I purchased the book. I read the book in its entirety in two days - some 343 pages. The book made for a very interesting read. My conclusions: "Clif Bar & Co." is a solely owned company that listens to a different drummer. Rather than profit margins being 'Job 1' for corporate stockholders, quality of product and employee relations are paramount. Refreshing! Since 2003, all Clif bars have been certified organic. I also learned that Clif bars have irregular shapes by design. I'm encouraged by Clif Bar & Company's dedication to healthful and quality products. As a result of reading this book, I'm now enjoying more Clif bars - without any questions lurking in the back of my mind as to what I'm consuming. I'm essentially a low fat, low sodium vegan, who goes to considerable lengths to avoid all genetically modified foods {GMO}.

Members Reviews: A Must Read A behind the scenes look at a very successful internet entrepreneur, and how he did it. Pat talks candidly about what worked and what didn't, and shares the things he needed to let go of, to take his business to the next level. This is not a rah-rah, you can do it too, book. This is a real look at the things that were holding him back, and how he came to let go of them, thus, the title of the book. The heart of the book comes from the sharing of Pat's humanity and humility, and sharing his real doubts and fears as he went through different stages of his business. There's the inspiration - that an internet "A lister" is just a human being with doubts and fears like the rest of us, and shows the power of letting go of them to reach grand new heights of success. Loved it. All of it. This book is by far one of my favorites. Itâs so inspiring. Pat gives so much value through the lessons learned in his experiences that itâs difficult not to get excited for things youâre working on. Although I loved all of the book, the ending was probably my favorite (fear). It got me excited and motivated to continue building my business. Thanks for everything, Pat. Hopefully one day I can thank you in person. I owe you more than youâll ever know. Donât stop. Keep going. Great book about business and life. I saw Pat speak at FinCon 2013 and have admired him ever since. Pat has his priorities straight in both business and in life.

Title: Obroni and the Chocolate Factory Subtitle: An Unlikely Story of Globalization and Ghana's First Chocolate Bar Author: Steven Wallace Narrator: Tom Parks Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 45 mins Language: English Release date: 11-07-17 Publisher: Brilliance Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders Publisher's Summary: What country makes the best chocolate? Most people would answer "Switzerland," or, if they're discerning, "Belgium" or "France." But, how many cocoa trees grow in Zurich? Lyon? Antwerp? Shouldn't the country known for growing the best cocoa beans be the one that makes the best chocolate? So, captivated by theories of international trade but with precious little knowledge of cocoa or chocolate, Steven Wallace set out to build the Omanhene Cocoa Bean Company in Ghana - a country renowned for its cocoa and where Wallace spent part of his youth - in a quest to produce the world's first export-ready, single-origin chocolate bar. What followed would be the true story of an obroni - white person - from Wisconsin taking on the ultimate entrepreneurial challenge. Written with sensitivity and devastating self-awareness, Obroni and the Chocolate Factory is Steven's chaotic, fascinating, and bemusing journey to create a successful international business that aspired do a bit of good in the world. This book is at once a penetrating business memoir and a story about imagining globalism done right. Wallace's picaresque journey takes him to Ghana's residence for the head of state, to the Amsterdam offices of a secretive international cocoa conglomerate, and face-to-face with key figures in the sharp-elbowed world of global trade and geopolitics. Along the way he'll be forced to deal with bureaucratic roadblocks, a legacy of colonialism, corporate intrigue, inscrutable international politics, a Bond-esque villain nemesis, and constant uncertainty about whether he'll actually pull it off. This rollicking love letter to both Ghana and the world of business is a rare glimpse into the mind of an unusually literate and articulate entrepreneur. Members Reviews: Engaging This is a memoir of Steven Wallaces business life while doing business in Ghana. Ghana and Cote dLvoire are the two biggest cocoa growers. Coco grows on trees in tropical areas primarily West Africa. Wallace is an attorney who decided to make a gourmet chocolate bar and hot chocolate drink after his family business closed. He had been an exchange student to Ghana when he was in high school. He built the Omanhene Cocoa Bean Company in Ghana. Wallace lives in Wisconsin; now thats a long commute. The book is well written and is written in a relaxed style as if the two of us were just sitting and talking about business experiences. Wallace explains the problems of doing business in West Africa from culture, language to infrastructure. I found the section about the World Bank forcing Ghanas government to sell off its state owned business to obtain a loan and that effect on the chocolate business most interesting. I found the global business information captivating. I also found the section about how to determine the quality of chocolate fascinating. After reading this book I wanted to go out and try a Obroni chocolate bar. The book was almost seven hours. Tom Parks did an excellent job narrating the book. Tom Parks got his start narrating audiobooks thirty years ago narrating for the Kansas Audio Reader Network. He has been nominated for an Audie. I have listened to Parks over the years and have enjoyed his pleasant voice and reading style.
