I was a game he would play. He brought the clouds to my day Then like a light of rain gray he came away one night Just one look and I knew you would make everything clear. Yes, yes, yes. Make all the clouds disappear. Put all your fears to rest. Who do I love the best? Don't you know? Don't you know? You got it all over him. You got it over him. Honey, it's true. Yeah, there's just you. You must have been heaven sent. You hear me call your friend out on a limb and you're all that? He's not. Just look what I've got. Cause you got it all.
C
Trill, is she right in your feet?
D
Oh, she is. I'm trying to sing the jets in a different register and you're interrupting me.
C
Trill is like, I don't care nothing about what you're doing.
D
She's like, you and the Polynesians can all prune together, but right now I got things to do. Get away from my feet. Praise the Lord. Trill, hold on. I'm about to kick her out of here because she's working. No, let's go. No, let's scoot. Let's go now. Because you're just doing it. You're just doing it right now and you know it. Yep.
C
True trail.
D
All right.
C
Welcome to getting grown, everyone.
D
Bye.
C
Trill wants to be our co host.
D
Trill. So. Yeah.
C
Co host so badly.
D
She's like. But I'm her.
C
Wants to be down with getting grown.
D
How are you, sister?
C
Sister? It's been a whirlwind. I'm doing okay, though. I'm safe. I have what I need. But, you know, it's been. It's been an intense last couple of weeks. But no, all is, you know, we're hanging in. How are you doing?
D
Oh, same. It has been intense in the best of ways. Yeah. Also, you know, in the world of ways. Life lifing a lot, actually a lot of loss recently. We want to give our love to Toya. You all love Toya here on the show. You know, Asakai Queen Asakai. But Toya lost her father, so I wanted to make sure that we.
C
Yeah.
D
You know, send some love her way. Make sure you all send some love.
C
Definitely.
D
You know, and just keep her in your thoughts and in your prayers, you know, whatever. Whatever your way is. You just keep her in that.
C
Yes. Toya's dad, you know, had been battling cancer for quite some time, and she was really in the throes of being a primary caretaker as he transitioned. So, you know, that how. How heavy a load and a lift that is. So, yeah, you know, her and her mom and Ian and Joanne, you know, it's. It's a transitional time, but, you know, everyone's going okay.
D
Yes.
C
And, you know, and I told her.
D
Take a minute to. After caretaking.
C
Yes.
D
You know, the part of caretaking we don't talk about. And I talked about this with her a little bit when we caught up is how much of a toll it takes on your loved ones. And often times there is a guilt associated with that where people don't want to say, yeah, you know, this was a heavy load. Because nobody wants to look at a loved one as a burden. It's not necessarily there a burden. The situation is taxing.
C
Yeah.
D
On anybody. And so, you know, I think that is a worthy conversation in the future. I remember when my uncle passed away and my aunt, you know, you would have thought she would have been distraught and she was very sad. Let's be clear. They've been together since she was 18. But she also. He just passed away in 2020. But she. My aunt was like, you know, I was so tired.
C
Yeah.
D
So I'm so glad that he's not hurting, but I was so tired.
C
It's a complex experience for sure. And I have not because just I've been all over the place. You know, I've been checking in with Toy, but we really haven't had a lot of like, you know, deep sister time because you. It never really ends. You know, we get. We transition from caretaking mode and then you go into sort of like the administration of loss and all that comes, you know, like, you know, planning, you know, celebrations of life, all of the mechanics of that and you know, burial, afterlife care, all of these things. Keep making sure that Toya's mom is good and all of that comes. But so, you know, we really haven't had a time to sort of have like a deep, deep check in. I'm hoping that once I. Once my work travel calms down a little bit, we, she and I can spend some time. But it's complex. Right, because like you said, it's the heaviness of the loss and you know, you're dealing with the exhaustion, there is some sense of relief, like you said, in terms of like you're grateful that your loved one is no longer in pain, but also, you know, the, the burden that you have been carrying and sort of managing care. So, yeah, it's a lot and I'm hopeful. As we were planning and thinking about conversations for the fall, I did sort of elevate some caretaking conversations and also some folks who are doing that work online that I've been following sort of like as my family sort of negotiates in our way. So hopefully we can continue to have conversation around the kitchen table about this because this is absolutely a part of adulting and very much where we find ourselves like in our age group. Deal with that. Yes, with that as well.
D
The really unfortunate part of it.
C
Yeah.
D
But definitely a huge part of it.
C
Yeah.
D
These are worthy conversations. I also been navigating a lot.
C
Yeah. Also wanted to. I know we talked about it at our Chicago show, but in addition to losing Toya, you know, I was also traveled to Boston to be there for. To Neil celebrate my life for to know and for those of. So, you know, I don't know if you remember, it's been, it's been some time. I believe it was 2023. We had a guest on the show, my friend from one of my close friends from undergrad. Her name was Tenille Pritchett and she was a colon cancer survivor. The colon cancer, you know, returned and you Know, metastasized to other parts of her body. And she fought for a long time, but right around our live show in Chicago, you know, she transitioned as well. And so her celebration of life also happened just before Toyas and, you know, was able to. I'm grateful that I was able to. To make it there for that service. But, you know, as we are coming up again on, you know, it never really goes away, but, you know, this is just another acknowledgment. Colon cancer is real. Danielle is our age. You know what I'm saying? Like, she would have turned 43. Like, her birthday was actually yesterday. She would have turned 43 and, you know, battled cancer for some time. And I'm grateful that she has her rest and her relief from that fight. But, you know, it is a major loss.
D
Yes, absolutely. Enjoy and enjoying jarring loss.
C
And so, yeah, you know, just thinking of her mom, thinking of her family, and also like, you know, you know, part of our chosen family. And, you know, it's good to sort of reconnect with some people that I had seen from undergrad, friends from undergrad, loved ones, mentors, folks we haven't had a chance to catch up with. And although it was very unfortunate circumstances, it's just a reminder that, you know, carving out intentional time for community and coming together is critical because life is lifeing and loss is a part of life. But, you know, just sin and love to everyone. We know that, you know, we're not the only ones. I know SIS is still grieving. Losses is happening all around us. And so if you are part of that in any way, every day, every day, we're holding you in our hearts and just know that you're not alone at all. And it's ghetto out here, but we are in the ghetto together.
D
Yes, we are. And we'll continue to discuss it as such.
C
Yeah.
D
So that, you know, everybody understands that, you know, they're not navigating this alone, but we do have to have these conversations for sure. There's no. No formulated kitchen table this week. We thought it, you know, Kia is traveling a lot. A lot, a lot actually. I actually am traveling right after this recording. And so. And so we thought, you know, we would just catch up over the last few weeks, you know, and just kind of, you know, just kind of just. Just have some. Some chats and you all will be a part of it, you know, and you can answer. Answer parasocially. We don't want a whole lot from you all. In the meantime, before we get into it, make sure that you are subscribing to the Patreon if you want to support getting grown. For the best way to support us, the Patreon is the way to do it. You get the full visuals of this show, and when we are not in the throes of everything, you get additional content. There's additional content. If it's not there already, it's coming. You know, lots of things that you bts I have from the live shows.
C
And I did some of. Of the live shows, so those. Those things will be up on the Patreon very soon.
D
Yes. So. So make sure you all check out the Patreon. If you want to support, you can also subscribe to us on YouTube. I know it is clips, but you know what? It helps your girls out and it costs you nothing. It also will hopefully make your algorithm savory, because I pray that we are in good company.
C
Yeah, please stop.
D
So make sure you all subscribe to us on YouTube and we thank you all for all of your listens. And we'll just get into some good chats.
C
Let's do it.
D
Let's get into some good chat.
C
Let's do it right now.
D
Before we start, sister.
C
Yeah.
D
Actually, before we, like, you know, start catching up, we have to shout out our brother of the show, Brie Wilson.
C
Yeah.
D
So you all remember we've had some beautiful conversations with Spree.
C
Yeah.
D
He's one of the few cisgendered heterosexual men that's been on this show.
C
Thank you.
D
And who also be on the right side of things, because that's why there's very few.
C
Thank you. You know how to act, so that's why he can. Come on.
D
Okay.
C
Amen.
D
He knows how to act, to feel, to express it, to communicate. Emote.
C
Thank you so much. We love you.
D
We spent some good intimate time with Spree after the Memphis show, and Spree performed.
C
Yes.
D
He did a couple of his songs at the Memphis show at Crosstown Arts. And one of those songs that he performed, his single dropped this Friday. So we want you all to make sure that you go all across the board, wherever you. Wherever you subscribe to your music. I'm not naming no names because everybody's complicit in everything bad. So it's just the truth. Like, at this point where you listen to your.
C
We're all in.
D
Go make sure that you download and support Spree's new single. I know he's got some more things coming in the future. If you want to support artists who are true artists, let me Tell y' all something. Spree is an artist. Okay. So he, like, he writes, he is a musician. You know, he's also a real person.
C
His craft, his art is very much informed by where he is in life. His transparency, I feel like, is what I find so, so resonant in his artistry.
D
Yes, yeah. Yes, yes, yes. Very much so. And you know, Spree also has been negotiating loss. He lost his grandmother.
C
Yeah.
D
A couple of years ago, who he was very, extremely close to. Actually moved to Atlanta to be with her in that final time, to spend as much time with her and be her caretaker as well. And so that's. That song mentions she is in that song, which I think is so beautiful. So heartfelt.
C
Yeah.
D
And so, you know, we want to just make sure. We shout out Spree, make sure you can support our brother. I call him. He's a captain planet ass. He's got the most balanced astrological chart I have ever seen in my life. If that's your jam, just know that I know his breakdown. And it is. It is so. Well, I say you a captain plan as Nikki, you are everything all at once. So I'm so proud of him. I'm so happy for him. And we want to make sure that we celebrate, support him. So we will have the link to the single in the description box. Please go check it out. And continue to support artists who are out here really, really doing their work. You know what I'm saying? Because we need them. Right. We need them right now so bad.
C
So, yes, please support.
D
We need them. Yes, support Spree. We also, you know, we just got off tour. I know we've mentioned it several times, but we have to do formal shout outs, please, because we have been supported by the best of the best from videographers, from. I can't talk. Photographers across. Just like Kinsey from Crosstown Art. So let's get into it. We have Sean Bartley, who was the photographer in la.
C
Yes.
D
Sean was so laid back. Sean was. He was just so cool with it and he was so fast. I was like, I don't know what kind of captures this thing is getting. I know what Mary vets I trust.
C
Yes.
D
He was like, no, I'm just confident, girl. You just. So shout out to Sean, who had the best energy and was a recommendation from another photographer friend of mine, Justin.
C
Nice.
D
So shout out to Sean. You can find him on Instagram at Sean Bartley sea in because, you know, we never know if it's the sh or se. We also want to shout out Gabrielle. Yes. Me, who was our Memphis photographer. Mama captured beautiful images in the back of the room. Yeah, Back of the room. I didn't know what was happening. Images came out splendid. I love the fact.
C
And it was so dark in there. So great how she got those pictures, because I couldn't even see five feet in front of my face. But she got all of the.
D
All of the flick at Memphis and in la. And both of us. Shout out to both of them for. For lighting the both of us.
C
Yes. Thank you.
D
Well and balanced across the board. You know what I'm saying? They said we're going to capture the best of the both of you. I'm so grateful. All right, I have to do a little bit of a special shout out for Morgan Bell.
C
Yeah.
D
So Morgan Bell was the videographer.
C
Incredible.
D
Memphis, Morgan.
C
Talk about going above and beyond. Whoa.
D
Filmed the entire show. Now that if you know anything about videographers, photographers, that was. That is not. You have to pay a special price.
C
Yeah.
D
You have to pay a special price for somebody to go that. Above and beyond.
C
Yeah.
D
Do you know how much battery life that takes? You've got editing, I mean, multiple angles, like sprays.
C
Yeah, it was wild. Yes, it's wild. Yeah.
D
It's. I. And. And just the generosity of that, like, has such a special place in my heart. I wanted to make sure we expressed the utmost of gratitude for that.
C
Yeah.
D
We did not ask for that, nor did we have the budget for it, because we are a small operation.
C
Yes, indeed.
D
Let's be very clear. We did. This was a team of three putting this together. Four Ixd with our socials. But, like, on the ground, it'd be. Mary is like seven people in one. Thank God for her energy. And then it's me and Kia.
C
Yeah.
D
And that is it. So shout out to Morgan for that. That was just. That was just the. The. The most beautiful hug of generosity. And to now, Simmons, who was our Chicago photographer. She also came in laid back, very, you know, ready to work. But, like, you know, she captured beautiful images. Beautiful images of the room as well.
C
Yes.
D
So we wanted to shout. And also, Mackenzie Webster of crosstown.
C
Let's connect. McKenzie is the plug. Hello.
D
Okay. She is Memphis.
C
Okay.
D
Mackenzie is Memphis. And she. She ensured that everything across which she went the most, above and beyond to make sure that not just the show went off without a hitch, but our experience in Memphis as a whole very. You know what I'm saying? I'm a drive, y'.
C
All.
D
Pick me up from the airport, Y'. All, like, so unheard of.
C
Just. And just like, you know, just the connection felt very organic. It felt like we'd been hanging out with Mackenzie for years and, you know, got the chance to meet her mom. Also got a chance to meet Sree's mom. I know that y'. All. I love connecting with Sre's mother. It was. It's just, you know, I think it speaks to my dear heart, you know, it just speaks to the culture of the show and what we try to. To affect around the kitchen table. I feel like, you know, if. If what we receive is indie indication of what we put out, it makes me feel like we're doing what we set out to do, so we're doing.
D
What we're supposed to be doing.
C
Yeah. All of the at. We will add and provide the contact information for all the people that we're highlighting. We'll make sure that makes it to the description box. If you are having an event in la, Chicago, Memphis, be sure to patronize these very talented individuals. You will not be sorry. You will not only have high quality work, but the vibes will be what they need to be. So thank you to everyone who contributed, and thank you all for capturing the. The beauty of our live show experience in ways that really reflected how it felt in the room. It wasn't just like a sense of community. Yeah. It wasn't point and click. Like, it felt like they were a part of the space and a part of the experience. And I think thank y' all for just bringing that to life so that as we are sharing, we're able to have beautiful images and beautiful video clips and footage.
D
Yes.
C
To. To help to tell that story. So shout out to all of y'. All. We very much appreciate it.
D
Shout out to every last one of you and I. I've got. Shout out to our homegirl, Jasmine Imani, if you are in New York. Oh, she has a fantastic eyelash studio. She focuses on the health of your eyelashes in addition to, like, tinting and lifting. But Jasmine came to the Chicago show and she. She gave us hands just as a friend on the merch table for sure, and I was super grateful for that. And then, you know, we. We must shout out our Mary. You know what I'm saying? Mary is our producer of Getting Grown. She's been a beautiful part of a lot of the. The. The growth of just, you know, our different guests that we've had. And, you know, you all heard. You heard last week. You know what I'm saying? We had a little. We had a little back and forth with Michelle Robinson. Obama and Craig Robinson, indeed. Mary made that happen. Like I said, she'd be seven different places at once. Just making sure merch is together. And, you know, Key and I have what we need so that we can really focus on what we need to focus on. And it's beautiful. Having a black woman a part of the team who cares about what you're doing is on the same page as you. It makes the lift easier. So we have to give our love to Mary, who also performed with some spree because don't forget, she's a musician first. So she performed with our brother Spree at the Memphis show. So we got to give Mary a love. Her handle is also in the description box because I need you all to also stream and go download her music. And like Kia said, shout out to all of you.
C
Yeah.
D
For just. For just coming through and really bringing the energy that meeting us where we at. You know what I'm saying? So that the room is full.
C
Yeah.
D
And every room was full. Shout out to City Winery, New York. Shout out to Crosstown Arts.
C
Shout out to the walk to walk.
D
Good yard.
C
Absolutely.
D
Thank you so much. We love you all so much, for sure.
C
And I think, you know, we are working in hope in hopes that we can continue to do a couple more shows this year. And, you know, already thinking about, you know, 2026, so, you know, keep it where you got it. Stay tuned. We're cognizant of the comments and. And seeing the requests for us to come to different cities. We appreciate your patience and your interest. We appreciate you also recognizing that, like Jay said, we're a small team and putting together these kinds of events requires a lot. So we thank you for helping us and giving us time to plan and put these things together to make sure that we're curating experiences that are enj for you. So more to come.
D
Absolutely. More to come. We've got one more city we'll announce before the year is out. Okay, we got one more for the year. That doesn't mean that's it, but one more this year. So stay tuned for that announcement very soon. Stay tuned for a couple of announcements very soon. But stay tuned for that city coming to you asap. Shooting. I want you all to have your ears to the streets because people was coming through talking about, how did I miss this? I don't know. I don't know. Because we said it multiple times.
C
I don't know. I. I don't know.
D
But we know that. We hope you don't miss the next one. Yes, yes, they do.
C
We will continue to push and make sure we'll continue to do what we do to amplify. But again, a big, big thank you to each and every one of you and so we appreciate you. Yeah, more than we we probably can adequately articulate.
D
Absolutely.

Came twirling right in, didn't she? It's the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe with pieces that feel as good as they look, honey. Luckily, quints makes it easy to look polished, stay warm and save big without compromising on quality. Quince has all the elevated essentials for fall. Think 100% Mongolian cashmere from $50 washable silk tops and skirts. Very important because who has time to be trekking back and forth to the dry cleaners and perfectly tailored denim all at prices that feel too good to be true. By partnering directly with ethical top tier factories. Very important. And cutting out the middleman, Quince cuts out the middlemen to deliver luxury quality pieces at half the price of of similar brands. Now you know, I had to get myself some fall staples because, you know, I found a couple holes in my sweaters. I probably need to put some cedar in my closet. You know how that goes. But it was an excuse because I got the cutest Mongolian cashmere crew neck sweater in a forest green. You all know how I feel about a a good earth tone, so. And she was only $50. Plus I got an oversized Mongolian cashmere sweater and heather storm blue. Okay. So she falls into my palette but also gives me a little judge. I got a little cropped like an organic cotton micro rig crop cutaway tank top. You know, she got a little muscle cut to her. So if I want to throw it on with a chunky sweater, a denim jacket, you know, a cute pant, she's a good basic for layering. And then y' all know how I feel about looking like Shaft. Okay. I absolutely love it. I spire too. So I was able to snag a coffee bean brown trench coat. Babe. Okay, I'm giving who is the woman who comes here with her her hand, Jade. And also it's not just, it's not just clothing that you can purchase. There's all kinds of homegoods. I've gotten really good stainless steel pots and pans. I've told you all before. Beautiful sheet sets that feel like honey on your skin. And then you know, we were in the market for a new living room rug, so I got a Dakota handloom wool rug in a beautiful blue that is just like really great quality, a beautiful color and an incredible price. Go and get your life, all right? Go get things that you need. Keep it classic and cozy this fall with long lasting staples. From quints, go to quince.com grown for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. That's a full year. That's Q-U-I-N c e.com grown to get free shipping and 365 day returns. Quince.com grown Chicago was. I don't think. Have we. Did we talk about Chicago? I don't think we talked about Chicago, like, specifically after we did it.
C
Probably not.
D
Did some bulk recording.
C
Yeah.
D
Chicago, Chicago, Chicago, Chicago, Chicago. Outside of the show. And y' all being some of my very favorite black people on the planet, in addition to the Memphis folks as well. Because you. There's just a warmth that can't be matched.
C
Blackness. Yes.
D
You know, Kia and I waited on a line for some rib tips.
C
Yes, we did.
D
Me, Kia, Mary and Jasmine waited on the line.
C
Worth it.
D
Worth every.
C
Worth every moment. Worth every moment of that time. Worth every moment.

Shout out to Limbs. Don't remember her name off the. It's LIMS Barbecue. But the, The. The auntie.
C
Oh, I.
D
The auntie is.
C
We were. We were deducing what her name might have been based upon all of the context clues. But, you know, if you go to Limbs, just know that the people in there are going to take care of you and you will feel the community. And. And absolutely, we. We were taken care of at lims.
D
We were taking.
C
We were put to work a little bit, but we were also taken care of.
D
Auntie said, who got a fax?
C
And you know what?
D
I think this was a. This was a. This was a. A testament to our spirits.
C
Yeah.
D
Because I don't think she would have just asked anybody. Anybody under the sun.
C
Got a fax.
D
And.
C
And I'm looking like, I need you.
D
I need somebody to take this paper and fax it for me because it's got to be in by 8am and.
C
I'm here today, and I didn't know that I was. And so working all day. So who of you have a fax machine at your house?
D
Who got a fax machine? It was us and one other black lady in there at the. The time. So, yes, I said, auntie, you. You can fax from the phone. What? Tell me.
C
Come. Come here. Come here.
D
She comes out from behind because remember, Lem's got bulletproof glass.
C
I mean. Yeah. Hello. Hello.
D
She comes from behind the door. She hands me the paperwork and she tells me exactly where to send it. And she said, you fax this from your phone for me?
C
Yes.
D
And I said, the level of Trust that you must have for us.
C
Yes.
D
And our spirits.
C
Like tax IDs. All of this official documentation that she handed to someone that she did not know. But she trusted us, you know, we were compensated. She gave us some wings.
D
She gave us the wings for free. Thank you for coming here working. But I, I, I love that's, that's like community, like community camaraderie. It's a testament to black women. Think about it. I saw, I saw a meme that said something about, like, think of black women are the only women you're gonna go to. You're gonna go to a black woman's house, you don't know. Trust you never met, trust to get your hair braided. They're going to close their garage or close their door or whatever the case is, and you're gonna be in there.
C
For nine hours sitting in somebody else's living room someone said you've never met. Listen, this is, I think I saw that as well. It was something about like, there's just. Black women is probably the only demographic that everybody inherently trusts.
D
Yes. Yeah. Other race tell their children, if you're.
C
In trouble, go find a black woman. And I mean, if you go on TikTok and search, like, there's also a, a wide range of videos of non black people saying that they only go to black women healthcare providers because the level of care and attention that they get from black women is incomparable when you look at other identity groups. So all of that, I feel like, is, is a superpower that people, you know, take for granted, but it is, it's just a function of who we are. It's in our genetic makeup. And I like to believe that anybody that's operating outside of that is operating against their, their nature. I know that there are terrible people everywhere.
D
Yes, these people are showing that they operate against their nature every goddamn day. We even need to name all of the bullet points of things that have happened just in the last couple of weeks. But, like, people continue to work against their own. Better. Good. I will vote for, like, you. All of these people. All of them. All of them. Okay, Crispy, the Crispy Ritz and everybody else in between are getting ready. They do everything to work against themselves. And if you would just lean into the magic of black women. I saw a white girl say, she was like, yo, I got complimented by a black woman on my smell at work.
C
And she felt like she had won the Nobel Prize.
D
Felt so mighty in my life.
C
She levitated with confidence.
D
She said, oh, you can't tell Me anything for the rest of the day. A black lady complimented me on my smell. Okay, so, like, we are just magic across the board. And the quicker that y' all mother recognize that and stop fighting against it.
C
Well, I'll be back.
D
Realize the world will move in a better direction. Let's just.
C
We'll all be the better for it. All of us will be the better.
D
All of us. All of us.
C
But no. So Chicago was amazing for so many reasons.
D
Chicago was amazing.
C
Spending time with. With the, you know, the food.
D
The food, the food.
C
I mean, and just, you know, I just like the vibe. Just much like Memphis, like, you know, it just feels like home. People speak to you. There's just not. And I think, you know, I think this is important for us to talk about because the narrative in mainstream media wants to suggest that our communities are unsafe and, you know, harmful and blah, blah, blah. But that's literally the opposite of everything that I've experienced in my life. Children.
D
Children do quaaludes, okay? They do that. They are. They. They obtain. They take your prescription pads and they write their own medication. Your children are tyrants. Please cut the. I'm over, okay? I'm over. And from ute them, you know what I'm saying? They start terror. I got a friend dealing with 900 race racial cases with elementary school age children calling each other wow and calling each other Chinese this and that. Like, they are being hateful from elementary. You them. And we know where they picked this rhetoric up from. But y' all are gonna stop putting danger in our society and putting all that on us. It is, y'. All.
C
It always has been.
D
Do it to yourselves, but to each other.
C
You like, always has been, always has.
D
Been, always has been, always has been.
C
But no, it was beautiful. I loved the vibe in Chicago. The room was full and the people felt safe. Right? Because I feel like every conversation of our live shows was, you know, it evolved into what it needed to be. The room discussed what it wanted to discuss. And the vulnerability to me is an indicator of the level of trust and community that comes when we come together and do some corporate meaning making of all of the BS that we are managing as adults in real life. So, yeah, it was just a vibe in every sense.
D
Yeah, it really was, like, down to the very end. So, yeah, we just wanted to give some formal things, links out for. For everybody who made our tour as special as it was. You know, they got live show exclusive merch, and Chicago went up. Everybody, everybody did. Chicago kind of outdid y'. All. A little bit.
C
And if you're on Patreon, YouTube will have the opportunity to have some of.
D
The show merch of the show merch. Come on.
C
So get in line.
D
Yeah, that's coming for you if it hasn't already. You know, I'd be confused about timelines when we're recording, so.
C
For sure.
D
Yes. If you.
C
Yeah.
D
If it hasn't been or not. If it's coming.
C
Yeah.
D
Very, very soon. Where you all. We have some fire hats. Like, I wear the hats.
C
Same everywhere.
D
And I don't feel like Kirk Frost when I do it. You know what I mean? Like, I. I wear our hats, I wear our merch.
C
I do too.
D
Not together. I don't match it head to toe, but I wear it.
C
No, it's very much a part of my every day. Every day.
D
Yeah.
C
The people at the gym, the people see me wearing all the time.
D
Yeah. As you all are listening to this, I will have just returned from London town.
C
Okay.
D
And you better believe they got them a Praise the Lord sweatshirt. Lutely. They did. Absolutely and did. Oh, and I have to say, I know we did a. A whole birthday focused episode, but I didn't get the. To talk about all of the festivities. Let's check.
C
How was your birth? We had a time for Jade's birthday. Okay. It was JT 2025. We were celebrating from the start. We had. We had that glorious sister, that glorious pie.
D
Oh, my God. Did it. Did it not touch your. This is what I'm trying to.
C
I say this as someone who doesn't deserve. I've said this before on the show. You know, I don't like. If I'm still hungry, I'mma ask you for another pie. Chicken. It's very rare that I will ask for a cake, a pie or something of the like, but, you know, I knew that. You know, my sister never steers me wrong. So when she says something is good, I'm always going to have a piece of it. So we got this honey. What is it? Salted honey.
D
It was a honey salt pie.
C
I don't know where it came from, but I.
D
It came from four and 20 blackbirds, which is not it. Yes, they are A pie shop here in Brooklyn.
C
It put me in the mind. For those of you who might be familiar, if you're looking for a reference, it put me in the mind of a chess pie.
D
Yeah, my grandma used to like a mix between a custard and a chess.
C
My grandma used to make chess pies, but this was the texture and the consistency Of a chess pie, but it was sweetened with honey as opposed to, like, refined sugar. And, yes, was also seasoned with a coarse sea salt. And something about that salted honey revolutionized my taste buds in a way that I never could have anticipated. I don't know what to say.
D
And the crust itself, if you're wondering about the crust, it was a classic, you know, British water crust. Yeah. Just flaky. Flaky crust. It didn't need a sweet crust because it was sweet enough within itself that salt cuts it and balances it. I got that pie for my homegirl's birthday because my homegirl, you know, she. She will adventure. You know what I mean? So I was like, all right, I don't have to. I will generally try to honor whatever somebody's favorite thing is, but if you give me free fucking rain, I'm going to have a good time. Let her do her work. So I got the honey salt pie for hers. I'd never had it. We ate that pie for her birthday, and it was more people consuming the pie in one sitting. We were vying for more pie. So when. When you all got me that pie.
C
Whoa. We kicked off the celebration with the piece. My life will never be the same. Okay, so we recorded. We had a beautiful dinner.
D
And I love when you love food as much as I do, of course.
C
Well, first of all, I love. Yeah, I love food, period. But I told y' all that Jade, you do. Jade's lights up like Times Square when she sees other people enjoying their food. Like, she's just like, oh, you can see that this is doing something for her, Shondo on the inside.
D
Like, it really is.
C
It is a joy to watch her just. Just be excited by the fact that we are.
D
You know what I mean, with the little white boy with the coffee mugs. That is how your mom looks on Christmas. Yeah, that's how I look.
C
Exactly.
D
When I. And it's specifically. I love watching people enjoy food in general, but when it is food that I have introduced them to.
C
Yes.
D
And it hits.
C
Yeah.
D
There's a certain.
C
Yes.
D
There's a certain type of year. Eat that. Yes, exactly.
C
Exactly.
D
It just brings me such joy. So good.
C
So good.
D
So I felt that way during the pot, and I felt that way afterward when we went to dinner.
C
Yeah.
D
That you thoroughly enjoyed my, you know, unconventional choosing.
C
It was so good.
D
And then Miguel's them threw me a shindig the following evening. That was just first and foremost. So many of my loved ones got on airplanes and flew here. Kia, our homegirl Nikki, who we shout out all the time from Canvas. I'm sorry, I'll get to Canvas.
C
Plentiful.
D
But Nikki and Plentiful brides. India, who was our makeup artist.
C
Yes.
D
Nikki's cousin, Canvas Mua.
C
She joined.
D
Based out of Chicago. Now she also got on an air airplane. Bobby.
C
Franiqua.
D
Franiqua. Oh, it was so. It was so. I don't know. Antonio, but there was Antonio. Oh. And also came and took the best footage.
C
Yes.
D
Took the best, best footage. Mary was doing exactly what she does for the live shows. Before my birthday, running hither and thither. Nicomi came and set up a bar. We had a bar with her. Witches brew mocktails and cocktails. They had a plethora of food because y' all know I love a bite, especially if there's gonna be liquor.
C
You had DJ Reborn and DJ Tara.
D
DJ Reborn and DJ Tara. Like, what a gift.
C
Yeah.
D
What a gift. And we danced and we fellowshiped, and I just. I was filled. I was. Was filled to the brim and surrounded. I felt like I was like in a. In a. In a weighted blanket of love from my loved ones. I got the best happy birthday song I've ever had in my life. We sung I. It's the. It was the best happy. I'm. I. It was better than anything you've ever gotten. I'm sorry. Yes. Even if your grandmother sang it like it was the best.
C
So good.
D
A white lady stopped on the street.
C
It was good from.
D
From outside the apartment. She stopped on the street.
C
She did.
D
And said.
C
Poked her white head in the window. We was like, ma', am, this is. Excuse you.
D
I wanna. What is she like? She dead ass was like, what are you. Oh, my God. Me and my child had to stop. My friend Mariam set up a jade Alter.
C
Oh, my God. And it's exactly what if when you hear the words jade alter, whatever comes to your mind, that. That's exactly what it was.
D
It was there. It was absolutely 40 ounces. It was a old English. It was a thrifted shirt. It was black flowers.
C
It was just everything.
D
It was it Crown Royal back. Like she Isamar. It was her home, which is my dear, lovely friend who does weighted hoop healing classes here in New York. So we're going to actually talk about. She remember Jocelyn Gordon who came on the show. She was actually a connect through Issamar. So Isamar does that. And I want to bring some of that content to you all soon and maybe put together some community hula hooping where we can, like, you know, expel grief, etc. Etc. It just. I don't. I don't know who I'm forgetting. I. And I, you know, charge it to my head and not my heart. But I just want you to know that I just felt surrounded.
C
Like, I really.
D
I felt surrounded by love because you were.
C
And it was. It was. You felt the love in the room. It was ex. It was wonderfully executed and enjoyed by everyone who was there. And, you know, I hope it. I. I'm grateful to hear that you feel the love because that's. You know what. What we all came to do was love on you and help you to celebrate life while we're still blessed to live it. And this is a milestone birthday and use this always show up for everyone else. So it was what we were. We were blessed and privileged and excited to do in return. So I'm grateful to know that you had a good birthday and that your celebration continued. Okay. So you had a good brunch the following day.
D
I did. Noah got me her own gift. Gift and put together a care package for me of all my favorite little snacks in a card and putting them basket that I can actually reuse. My very thoughtful child. She's so precious, you know, Tristan, Tristan. Tristan did whatever the girls needed him to do. Okay. He said he showed up and he also purchased tickets in the near future for a Gucci Mane concert. So we'll do a Staycation in a Gucci Fade concert. I love that. Seventeen. Yes.
C
Come on.
D
I'm so excited.
C
You are.
D
I love that. That's perfect. We are the new adults, so.
C
No, we are the new adults because I cannot wait. I don't know when. I hope I haven't missed the bus, but now a goal of mine is to put on a gown and go to a Jeezy concert. I feel like that's what I would like to do, sister.
D
That was one of the best things.
C
I've got to do it. I've got to do it. I'm tired of having fomo. When I look at y' all on Instagram doing it, I'm like, I'm gonna buy a gown and I'm gonna be ready the next time the opportunity presents. I'm ready.
D
It's a time.
C
It's time.
D
It's a time.
C
It is time to do it, and I have to.
D
Doing it in Atlanta was just.
C
I know.
D
Jeezy with the orchestra in Atlanta and black side.
C
Yes. With.
D
Oh, please stop. Okay. A highlight of my life. Top 10.
C
I'm hoping he'll come Back to the Kennedy center. Because I want to. I want to do it there, but.
D
Anywhere, really, when he does, we will go.
C
Yes.
D
We will put on gowns. We will go eat luxuriously as we do.
C
Yes.
D
You know that I love evening on the town.
C
Evening on the town. That is my. That is my.
D
If you look.
C
If you want to. That's my love language. You know, real time with my. You know, getting dressed up, luxuriating, having wonderful food. That's really what I love to do.
D
That's what that. That's our. That is what we do. That's what we do. Yeah. I had to make sure I shared that. Maybe I'll send the clip to Ty to put in the birthday song because please have to get a piece. Yeah, okay. It was sounds of Blackness, voices of soul, whatever other, you know, Negro something.
C
You just get the right singing blacks in the place. We don't need a rehearsal. We don't. We were talking about that at Toyas after Toya's dad service, because Toya literally looked around the room and pointed at a few of us and asked us to get up and sing. Total praise. And you would have thought that we had. We were a group and we rehearsed, but it's just like, this is what we do. When you aggregate the right blacks in the room at the right time, you know, the music just happens, and we.
D
Love that for us.
C
We do.
D
Yeah, we do. You my favorite, because you and Mary sing so differently, but you're both singers and you both have church backgrounds. So when y' all start going, when we. When we be on the road, I'm like, the juxtap. This just. I love this.
C
Yeah. Everyone just falls into place. This is what happens.
D
Yeah.
C
Yeah.
D
I love watching it from afar.
C
Jade is like, oh, I know that one. That's Kirk Franklin.
D
I'm the triangle player.
C
What a time.
D
I love it so. What a time we didn't want to be before you long.
C
Yeah. More traveling, sis?
D
Yeah.
C
You're going to the London town, and I'm so excited for you. I know you didn't say it, but in my mind, I feel like this is an extension of your celebration.
D
It is. It is an extension of my celebration. Shout out to my home girl, Erica, who put this together. You know, both of us were like, we want to go to London. So she booked it. She booked it. And we're going. And I'm gonna. You know, I'm not taking no pictures with the. With the fluffy hats.
C
Oh, please.
D
And, you know, I will eat a fish and chips. I don't know. But an English breakfast, I just. Beans.
C
Continue to just pray about it and see if. If you feel so inclined. But if not, don't press yourself, please.
D
But there will be so much more. There's so much other delicious ethnic food in London that I'm excited to just go experience and. And see and, you know, see the London.
C
I would love to go see you all. Yes. I've never been.
D
I. I'll do a. I'll take notes so that we can do a trip over. Over to the park.
C
I would love that.
D
I'm gonna try to link with Kalechi. I'm. See what her skin looks like or, you know, our homegirl Mo moved to a few years ago for work, so. So by the time. Y', all. Listen, I did all of this already, hopefully, but hopefully it went off without a hitch. We're putting it out there. Yes, it absolutely did. It was a fantastic time. I have to make sure I don't do a single British accent, because why the would I do that? No, like, can I please? They'll be like, girl, shut up. You're fully American. Fully American.
C
Please. You are first.
D
I know you are, but what am I?
C
They start speaking French, and we start speaking French, and they start speaking back to us in English. That. That is code for please stop. Please stop what you're doing.
D
Stop.
C
Please do not go any further.
D
Okay, I will just speak English because your French is very, very bad.
C
Exactly.
D
I love, like, the audacity of how they respond back or the disgust.
C
It's like, girl, what? Don't even trust yourself.
D
Please shut the up.
C
I will come down to where you are. Please stop trying.
D
It's like, it's gonna be a time. I. I don't know how many Donald questions I'm gonna get, but I. Oh, God.
C
What was interesting, when we went to Paris, me, Crystal, and Bobby, every time we said we were from the U.S. everyone was like, oh. Like, they hit us with the. I'm so sorry. Are you okay?
D
No, I'm like, no, no, that's not okay.
C
And we appreciate your hospitality. Thank you so much for welcoming us so much. Thank you.
D
Also, again, magic of black. Because it's like, I know. It'd be like America, and it'd be like, y'.
C
All.
D
You know, they'd be looking at us.
C
Like, are you okay?
D
You know, looking back, they either, like, really, really understand that we're not a part of the problem, or they are. They are very much a part of the problem. Right. Either way, black People are magical, and I think that's how we should end the episode.
C
I agree. We thank you guys for sitting at the kitchen table and catching up with us and just for just being gracious. Y' all know that Jade and I are doing this show and living our lives and trying to keep up and maintain both, and y' all always are, are amenable to being flexible. And, you know, y' all just live life with us because y' all know it's hard out here. So. Yeah, we appreciate you.
D
It is so much. We really do. We're not even going to do any petty peeves or any of that. We just wanted to check in with you all. We have a lot of really awesome dope conversations and guests coming up for the fall and winter season. So we are excited for you all to continue sitting at the kitchen table with us, and we want to hear from you as well. Yeah, there will be many conversations where your chime in will be imperative. Again, this is a show of community, and we want it to be that, not just the words. So make sure you all stay tuned for all of the things that getting grown has coming and just take them out and tell them what to do.
C
Make sure that you're constantly moisturizing your mind. And the way that you do that is by attending to the business that is yours and yours alone. Okay? Mind your business. Business now more than ever. Don't let anybody bring you down into the muck and the mire of what they're dealing with. Worry about yourself. Focus on yourself. Focus on your light and how loved you are and how much you are valued because we value you. And also make sure that you're moisturizing your insides by drinking water every single day. Okay? You could just never drink too much. Okay? Just be moist from the inside. And you also want to make sure that you're moisturizing your outside, your skin, which is your largest organ, because your black will crack if it's dry.
D
Libre Palestina libre Sudan Libre Congo libre. Puerto Rico libre. Blacks in the U.S. libre Libre. Tigre libre. Haiti Libre. All of us, we love y'.
C
All. Take care of yourselves and talk to you soon.
