Jella
Jella kept her eye on the clock, counting down the minutes until 1am and the end of her shift. She couldn't wait to get to bed. Jella and her teammates began to gather their things to leave, but their team leader told them not so fast. Everyone needed to go out to the yard.
Co-worker
They just said that it was a meeting with the boss, the team leader and the translator.
Jella
With the boss, the team leader and the translators. This was never good news. Jella and her nine co workers made their way outside. The yard was kind of like a quad on a college campus, except with the guards around, it gave more prison yard vibes. They lined up five in each row. Jella stood at the front of the line. She looked around. Two story concrete buildings all painted in a stark shade of white, glaring fluorescent lights pouring out of the windows and doors. On the first floor was where they spent long hours, day and night, scamming. On the second was where they slept in cheap metal bunk beds. The roofs were studded with floodlights that only added to the prison feel. She looked down at the concrete beneath her feet. Such a sad contrast to the adventures on Thai beaches she thought she'd be having when she first met Charlie. A hush spread through the group as the boss began to speak. Beside him was a team leader and two translators. The boss started with an announcement. They were changing up the payment structure. It would now be tiered based on how much they were able to scam.
Co-worker
If you have five to seven people scam, your salary is $700. And if you have a bigger amount like 20,000 AUSD scam. They will give you 1,000 USD salary plus your commission.
Jella
That'd be great if you were good at scamming.
Co-worker
But if you did not scam, you will only get $300.
Jella
But if you were like Jella, this was terrible news. Jella was awful at scamming. Like truly awful. She'd never gotten good at the dirty talk. She'd only gotten three clients to take it to video chat. But none of them were successfully blackmailed. She'd been moved over to another group with a new scam people into buying things from a fake Amazon store. That hadn't gone any better. So she'd been sent to yet another group. This time someone else was doing the scamming. Jella just served as a warm body on camera for video calls.
Co-worker
Just like to see that you are real. You are not fake.
Jella
Her co workers would tell her what to say. And using an AI filter to alter her face, Jella would deliver her lines to the target. She didn't like doing this either. And now she was being told that her already meager salary would be tied to her poor performance. Jella's anxiety shot through the roof. But that wasn't all. Her team leaders told them there would be harsher consequences for not meeting quota.
Co-worker
They will lessen the food like that.
Jella
No quota, no food.
Co-worker
You will be punished to duck walk inside the field for 20 times.
Jella
Duck walking? Where grown adults are forced to squat and walk across the field while everyone watched. It was humiliating. She did not want to do this. All Jello could think about was how much she fucking hated this place. How angry she was at Charlie. How desperately she wanted to get out. And then one more update.
Co-worker
They announced that by next month we will be transferring to a different compound.
Jella
A different compound. Jella was in a full on panic now as her bosses explained that they were being transferred to another company. This new company operated out of a compound next door.
Co-worker
It was a new built compound. It has another security guard with bigger fence.
Jella
Jella was freaking out. She'd heard rumors about this other compound.
Co-worker
They are hurting. They are paddling the person.
Jella
Jella had heard they beat their workers with electric batons and paddles to punish those that didn't meet quota. With her track record, Jella knew she was doomed.
Co-worker
What if I will die here? So I need to leave this compound before we transfer to that compound.
Jella
She had to get out of this situation. The one Charlie helped put her in before it cost her her life.

Podcast: Ghost Story by Wondery | Pineapple Street Studios
Episode: Listen Now: Scam Factory
In the gripping episode titled "Listen Now: Scam Factory," Ghost Story delves into the dark underbelly of a multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise operating under the guise of legitimate jobs. Hosted by the award-winning team from Wondery and Pineapple Street Studios, this episode unveils the harrowing experiences of individuals coerced into participating in elaborate scam operations. The narrative is delivered through the chilling account of Jella, a trapped employee desperate to escape the clutches of the Scam Factory.
The episode opens with a vivid portrayal of the Scam Factory's operations. The narrator sets the scene:
Narrator [00:00]: "Imagine this. You help your little brother land a great job abroad, but when he arrives, the job doesn't exist. Instead, he's trapped in a heavily guarded compound, forced to sit at a computer and scam innocent victims, all while armed guards stand by with shoot to kill orders."
This introduction highlights the deceptive nature of the Scam Factory, where innocent-looking job opportunities mask a sinister reality. The facility is described as a well-guarded compound where thousands are held captive, forced to execute fraudulent schemes under the constant threat of violence.
The heart of the episode focuses on Jella's personal ordeal within the Scam Factory. As the story unfolds, listeners are introduced to the oppressive environment and the psychological toll it takes on the victims.
Jella's Daily Struggles:
Jella [01:20]: Jella was counting down the minutes until 1 am, eager to end her grueling shift and finally get some rest.
Her anticipation of relief is swiftly dashed as the team leader interrupts their routine:
Co-worker [01:43]: "They just said that it was a meeting with the boss, the team leader and the translator."
Jella's unease grows as she and her nine coworkers are ushered outside to a yard reminiscent of a prison compound:
Jella [01:48]: "Two-story concrete buildings all painted in a stark shade of white, glaring fluorescent lights pouring out of the windows and doors."
This stark environment underscores the lack of humanity and the prison-like conditions the workers endure.
A significant portion of the episode details the Scam Factory's exploitative payment structures and the severe punishments imposed on underperforming employees.
Changing Payment Structures:
Co-worker [03:07]: "If you have five to seven people scam, your salary is $700. And if you have a bigger amount like 20,000 AUSD scam, they will give you $1,000 USD salary plus your commission."
While this tiered payment system might seem lucrative on the surface, it is a facade masking the immense pressure and unrealistic expectations placed on employees.
Impact on Jella:
Jella [03:25]: "That'd be great if you were good at scamming."
Jella's admitted incompetence in scamming puts her at a disadvantage, leading to further complications:
Jella [03:32]: "But if you were like Jella, this was terrible news."
Despite her efforts, Jella's lack of skill in executing scams forces her into increasingly demeaning roles, such as serving merely as a "warm body on camera."
Threats of Punishment:
The episode intensifies as the team leaders introduce harsher consequences for failing to meet quotas:
Co-worker [04:41]: "They will lessen the food like that."
Jella [04:46]: "No quota, no food."
Co-worker [04:49]: "You will be punished to duck walk inside the field for 20 times."
The degrading punishment of "duck walking" serves as a means to instill fear and maintain control over the captive workforce.
As the episode progresses, the Scam Factory announces a relocation to another compound, heightening the tension and fear among the employees.
Co-worker [05:14]: "They announced that by next month we will be transferring to a different compound."
The new facility is described as having even stricter security measures:
Co-worker [05:32]: "It was a new built compound. It has another security guard with bigger fence."
Jella's anxiety peaks upon hearing about the move, especially after rumors of increased brutality in the new location:
Co-worker [05:42]: "They are hurting. They are paddling the person."
Jella [05:47]: "Jella had heard they beat their workers with electric batons and paddles to punish those that didn't meet quota."
With the looming transfer, Jella realizes the dire consequences of her inadequate performance, propelling her into a state of panic and desperation.
Faced with the imminent threat of more severe punishments and a transfer to a more restrictive compound, Jella resolves to find a way out of the Scam Factory. Her determination is fueled by past traumas and a burning desire for freedom.
Jella [05:58]: "What if I will die here? So I need to leave this compound before we transfer to that compound."
Her past connection to Charlie, who previously helped her into this situation, adds a personal vendetta to her quest for escape:
Jella [06:05]: "She had to get out of this situation. The one Charlie helped put her in before it cost her her life."
Jella's internal struggle and external challenges paint a vivid picture of her fight for survival against overwhelming odds.
"Listen Now: Scam Factory" masterfully portrays the terrifying reality of individuals trapped in a high-stakes scam operation. Through Jella's story, listeners gain insight into the psychological manipulation, oppressive conditions, and the relentless pursuit of freedom by those ensnared in the Scam Factory's web. The episode serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which criminal enterprises will go to exploit and control, while also highlighting the indomitable human spirit striving for liberation.
"Scam Factory" is a stark exploration of modern-day exploitation, blending true crime elements with personal narratives to create a compelling and thought-provoking episode. By focusing on Jella's experiences, Ghost Story not only sheds light on the mechanics of such criminal operations but also emphasizes the human cost behind them.
