Shortly afterwards, Israel said it carried out a strike targeting the senior leadership of Hamas. They're said to have been holding a meeting to discuss the latest Gaza ceasefire proposal. Qatar has served as a mediator in talks between Israel and Hamas, and the group's exiled leadership has been based there for many years. It was then reported that Khalil Ahaya, the Hamas leader and chief negotiator, was among those targeted. Hamas later said five of its members had been killed, but it said the attempt to assassinate its negotiating team had failed. The White House has told the BBC that the United States was notified of the attack.
