This like summer festival in an Alaskan forest. But there is so much mystery that surrounds this case to this very day.
Teeth
Yes. So please make sure that you guys share this one. Her sister is such a crusader in this case and her family wants as many people as possible talking about Aaron. And we know that you guys are going to have some thoughts about this story. So again please share it.
Daphne
We will have stuff on our socials that you can share as well, like a missing persons poster and stuff like that. So head on over oingwestpodcast on Instagram and then we are also on Facebook.

Alright guys, without further ado, this is episode 522 of Going West. So let's get into it.
Daphne
Sam in July of 1995. A 24 year old woman in Alaska headed out on a date with a man she had only recently met. She was last seen at a crowded summer fair in the forest, surrounded by people and tourists. But by the time the sun rose the next morning, she was gone. What followed was a desperate search in the unforgiving Alaska wilderness and eerie silence from her date, which only deepened the mystery. This is the disappearance of Erin Gilbert.
Teeth
Foreign.
Daphne
Marie Gilbert was born on May 4, 1971 in the city of Everett, Washington, which by the way, is north of Seattle. The youngest of three sisters, she joined Catherine and Stephanie and this trio remained super close until her disappearance. Erin was warm and extroverted and enjoyed herself an active lifestyle. Like, she had this taste for adventure from a young age and actually moved around quite frequently, making friends wherever she went. She also had a flair for the creative and was keenly artistic. Like, for example, according to her dad, Kurt, quote, she wants to be a writer. In the back of her mind, she wants to be a great novelist. Love that about her.
Teeth
Yeah, you guys would probably get along very well.
Daphne
Well, after her parents split up, because they did get a divorce, Erin moved out of Washington with her dad to San Francisco to finish up high school. And then she spent time on the east coast taking a few college courses before returning back to Washington State and then later settling back in San Francisco. So she definitely popped around. Like I said, she was a bit of an explorer. And then in 1994 when she was 23, she was a brand new transplant in Alaska, actually having moved up to join her sister Stephanie there. And as you guys can tell from the intro, that is where today's story takes place. And remember, Stephanie was her older sister, so she was married. And her husband, who was in the Air Force, was stationed at the Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, which is how they ended up there. First, Stephanie later remembered, quote, my husband traveled a lot for work and I was alone so much of the time. So I told Aaron she should come stay with me in Alaska. And I love that because Erin, you know, she's a mover and a shaker. So that was probably such a fun thing for her to have done to try another new place and to be with her sister because she could just pick up and go, you know, there's.
Teeth
Not really any sort of obligation there. She's just kind of on her own.
Daphne
Free time and she's in her early 20s, so she, she's not like tied down to a career. She also ended up settling into her sister and brother in law's house. So she didn't have to worry about getting an apartment or something. She already had a place to stay. So this was a really exciting and kind of easy decision to make. Just, you know, give it a try. And it was also really nice because not only did Aaron get to spend time with her sister and her brother in law, but she also got to spend time around their two small children as well. And Aaron loved working with kids, so she started working part time at a daycare there. But since it was only part time, Stephanie connected Erin with a local family looking for a nanny. So Erin worked for them too. Though she did have plans to enroll in beauty school in the fall. After about a year in her new city of Anchorage, she was still getting used to the slower pace that Alaska offered, especially when you compare it to San Francisco. And she hadn't really made many new friends or dated much, just spent lots of time with family and kids. But that changed one summer night in 1995 when she met David Combs.
Teeth
Now, according to a few sources, newly 24 year old Aaron and David, who actually went by Dave, so that's what we're gonna call him today, had met at a bar called Chilkoot Charlie's before and exchanged numbers. But whether or not this is true, their most recent meeting was resulted in plans for a date the next day. And upon this potentially second meeting, which happened on June 30, Erin and Dave, who was around her same age, hit it off while playing pool at Chilkoot Charlie's. And a little more on this bar cause it's actually still there today. It's located in South Anchorage and is described on Google as huge nightclub with three stages, three dance floors and 10 bars that hosts DJs, comedians and live music. So this place is, you know, fairly large and it has kind of like a rustic theme to it. So that June night, Dave asked her to attend a locally famous festival with him the following day. And Erin agreed. And according to Dave, she said that she didn't know many people here. So on Saturday, July 1, 1995, around 4pm, Dave arrived at Stephanie's house to pick Erin up. They were bound for Girdwood, Alaska, about an hour southwest from the Almendorf Air Force base where Stephanie and her family lived. Now Girdwood, which is a resort town known for drawing tourists, is nestled in the mountains along the water. And it's even known as Alaska's only real resort town. And it has such a beautiful landscape, along with fun activities like an aerial tram you know, like a mountain cable car, hiking skiing, dog sledding, glacier tours, etc.
Daphne
Yeah, it kind of gives me like Switzerland vibes in some ways. It's a little Euro to me. It's, it is stunning.
Teeth
Yeah, it's just like a beautiful place to go together. Especially because they were hosting their annual Girdwood Forest Fair, which is still held every single year, where people enjoy homemade Alaskan goods, live music, drinks and food. So when Dave arrived to pick up Aaron, Stephanie remembered him as standoffish, saying, we met him when he came to the house. I remember my husband asking him to take off his sunglasses. I think he wanted to get a good look at him. But it was also a respect thing. The family shared one cell phone. Remember, it's 1995. And later Stephanie would remember, sadly, that her four year old son told Aaron that she should take it with her. But Stephanie later relayed to NBC that her son told her sister, auntie Erin, you should bring a cell phone, and that Erin said no. Stephanie added, in hindsight, that cell phone might have saved her life. Not wanting to leave her family without it, she politely declined, of course, not thinking that she would be needing it, and assured them that she would be fine without it. She and Dave then headed down the Seward highway, which is bordered by the water, toward Girdwood, arriving around 5pm that day.
Daphne
So Aaron and Dave enjoy just kind of milling about the vendor booths at the fair, and then they headed to the festival's beer garden to meet up with some friends of Dave's. But sometime after 6pm FARE attendees reported seeing Aaron and Dave leave and walk back toward his car. His friends left around 6:45pm so they didn't see Aaron or Dave again. But Dave was reportedly seen again in the vicinity of the fairgrounds around 9pm and according to him, he asked multiple people if they had seen Erin. But when nobody had because, remember, nobody knew her, he returned to his Anchorage home. So he literally left without her.
Teeth
So this guy takes her on a date an hour away from where she lives and then just decides to, oh, well, I can't find her, so I'm just gonna take off and go home.
Daphne
Yeah, it gets weirder as well when we get more into the details, but like, that's an insane thing to do, right? So Erin's sister Stephanie remembered, I got up at 7 in the morning and couldn't believe she didn't come back. I thought, oh, well, Girdwood is 40 miles out of town, so just assuming that she had maybe spent the night with Dave or maybe stayed out of town with friends. Stephanie wasn't immediately too alarmed until she received a call from Dave shortly after she woke up that Sunday morning. Dave called the house to ask if Erin had made it home. And shocked by this, Stephanie reported that she had neither seen nor heard from her sister since she left the afternoon prior and grilled Dave for the details of their last interaction. Now, Dave alleged that he last saw Aaron around the same time that his friends and fellow festival attendees last saw her, which was around 6pm again. So only an hour after arriving, he and his friends then walked to his car, which was parked on the side of the road near the festival grounds. But when they reached his vehicle, Dave says that the battery had died because he had forgotten to turn his headlights off. And just so everybody knows to kind of make sense of this, since April of 1994, so a little over a year earlier, motorists have been required to use their headlights on the Seward highway, which, of course, was the route that they took to get down to Girdwood, which is why he had been using them during the day since they got there at 5. You know, it was still very much daylight. This is the summer. But the last time that Dave says that he saw Aaron was when he learned that his battery died and he told her to stay with his car while he walked to the nearby home of a friend who could then drive to them to give them a jump. But the identity of this friend has never been revealed publicly. And according to Erin's sisters on her Facebook group for Erin's case, the family hasn't even been made privy to the name of this friend.
Teeth
Well, Stephanie reported, quote, he didn't tell anyone she was missing until he called me around 7am the next morning. He said that he called to make sure that Aaron made it home okay. He was very casual about it.
Daphne
It's just so weird off the bat, because how would she have made it home okay? Like, it's hard to tell if he's genuinely concerned or he's feeling guilty about having done something to her. And this is his way of, like, soft approaching her disappearance, like, trying to establish an alibi as soon as he could.
Teeth
I mean, the whole thing is just so weird in general, for multiple reasons, like, Aaron and Dave were presumably within walking distance of dozens, if not hundreds of people, including some of Dave's own friends and many other cars and motorists. So I don't really understand why he couldn't have just asked one of these other people to jump his car. It's still a mystery. And why he supposedly left Aaron alone to go get his friends so soon after arriving is just really weird as well.
Daphne
Yeah. Like, why drive all that way to stay an hour and yeah, like you're saying why you're looking for one particular friend to jump your car that's not there, but you have other friends there. Like, you have other people there. You can put your heads together and try to figure out how to get a jump. Surely somebody in that lot or along the side of the road has jumper cables. Like you're gonna walk by yourself to some mystery location to get a jump. It's just is not lining up.
Teeth
Yeah, it already feels like bullshit because typically that's what people do. If your car dies, you ask somebody that's around you if they've got jumper cables to start your car.
Daphne
This is Alaska as well. Like, I'm sure a lot of people would have those kind of tools. Like you have those in our car.
Teeth
I do. And also I just feel like. Yeah. I mean, the whole timing of just like, oh, we arrived at 5pm and then we're gonna leave at 6. Like, okay, so maybe you go back to your car and you realize that the car is dead.
Daphne
Yeah.
Teeth
You can still get a jump at any point during the night probably. So I don't really understand, like, you don't have to leave immediately just because your car's dead.
Daphne
It's off.
Teeth
Well, additionally, Aaron's sisters felt strongly that she was not the type to sit and wait indefinitely to be rescued and that she was too proactive for that. So she likely would have wanted to either go with Dave or to find her own way to remedy the situation. Like, she wouldn't have just said, cool, I'll just sit here and wait. Like he's essentially claiming she did.
Daphne
Yeah, I mean, why would she do that? She doesn't have a phone, she doesn't have a book with her. She's just gonna stand there and like, tap her feet for X amount of time.
Teeth
Yeah. I mean, she obviously also doesn't know anybody in this area. She had just met Dave's friends.
Daphne
There's no reason for her to stand there. Why would she not go with him? Why would he not say, hey, wanna take a walk up the road with me?
Teeth
Well, Dave continued to explain to Stephanie that he walked aimlessly for two hours attempting to locate his friend's house, but that he never did. So again, why he declined to stop to use a phone or ask somebody close by for directions is still yet another mystery.
Daphne
You pick this Girl up for a date. You drive an hour away with her for a fair and walk around for an hour at the fair with her, then leave her at your car, walk around for two hours alone while she's supposedly waiting for you, looking for a jump again shortly after arriving. This story is just really hard to believe.
Teeth
Yeah, I don't think anybody is really buying this story. Well, he said when he couldn't locate his friend's house that he retreated to his car again and this time miraculously managed to get it to start. Yeah, fucking right.
Daphne
Yeah, Heath and I talked about this one for a while because, Heath, I would say you know cars pretty well. You've jumped our cars many times.
Teeth
I mean, fairly well. Not as well as like my dad who's a mechanic.
Daphne
But yeah, but yeah, we looked it up just to see if that would be possible. And you know, we don't know the health of his battery, if it was a new battery or an old battery.
Teeth
But we also know that this is 1995. So yeah, batteries back then probably aren't. Weren't as elite as they are now.
Daphne
Well, let's say that his battery, you know, it's been like a little over an hour from when they got there to when or actually at this point. Yeah, so it would have been about an, taken about an hour for the battery to die and then he would have given it allegedly like a two hour rest. So apparently if your battery is only like partially drained and it still is in overall decent health, there is a very, very, very slim chance that it might have like enough residual charge for the engine to come back on if you give it a rest for a couple hours.
Teeth
But I mean, I guess it's, it's possible, but the way that the battery charges is by the car running.
Daphne
Exactly. So it's like the, basically the chances of this being true are not impossible.
Teeth
But it's like, no, again, it sounds pretty unlikely.
Daphne
It's very unlikely that this is true. So just keep that in mind.
Teeth
So Dave is basically saying that he was gone for about two hours and when he came back Erin was gone and that he had no idea where she went. He added that he then searched for Erin until 1am later saying, I actually thought she might be mad at me. I assumed she had taken off. With who? Dave?
Daphne
No, literally with who.
Teeth
So Dave returned home and went to bed without notifying Aaron's family until the next morning. So alarmed, Stephanie piled her family into the car and headed down to the fairgrounds to search for her sister that Sunday. And Dave actually met them there initially willing to help them look, but seemed kind of blase about the urgent nature of Erin's disappearance.
Daphne
Stephanie recently shared on Erin's Facebook group, quote, as we were not from the area, we immediately knew something bad had happened because she would have called us that evening. Clearly she wasn't capable of doing that because something really bad happened to her. Dave should have called us, and by the time he did, it was clearly too late and we knew that immediately. I remember standing in Girdwood knowing something awful had happened and I had no help or power to do anything. It's a moment in my life I will never forget and I think about that moment often. I also remember looking over at Dave as he was eating a hot dog. I will never forget that moment.
Teeth
That's kind of crazy that he's just casually eating a hot dog while they're panicking. They're looking for Aaron all around this fairground area. Like, what are you doing, Dave?
Daphne
It's hard because he might just be like a dipshit and he, he, maybe in his head he's like, oh, well, I just met this girl and I don't fucking know where she is, so might as well get some food. Like, maybe he's just a shithead.
Teeth
Well, it's hard for me to believe though, just based on the things that he told Stephanie. You know, like all these stories that just don't sound very believable.
Daphne
Oh, I mean, I don't think he's just a shithead. I just want to play devil's advocate right here just to say, sure, maybe, but I think he's very suspicious and we're going to get into a little bit more on why. So basically they're all just like circling the fairgrounds, looking for Eren on their own and just coming to the startling realization that nobody had seen her in over 12 hours. So it was at that point that Stephanie reported her 24 year old sister missing. But sadly, despite the pleas of the family and their insistence that Aaron would not have disappeared into the night alone or with anybody else for any reason, detectives took their time getting the investigation underway. Based on the fact that there was no evidence to suggest that foul play had occurred and that she was like a free adult because they kind of have a couple things circling. You know, she was at this fair, she's a young woman, Fourth of July was two days later. So they're thinking, oh, maybe she's spending the next couple days with friends and she's partying, but her sister is like, she doesn't have friends here yet. And the only reason that she was in Girdwood is because she went to this fair because this guy invited her there. He had friends there. She didn't. She wouldn't have just met somebody and gone off and just been like, bye, sister. Not gonna let you know where I'm at. Because she really cared about her family. She was staying with her family.
Teeth
And it's always gonna be suspicious when somebody goes on a date with another person and then doesn't come home. Like you're gonna look at that person.
Daphne
Absolutely. And Stephanie knew this. She knew better. So when investigators entertained the idea that she may have left of her own volition, Stephanie argued, quote, everything was going well. She was working and she was excited about going to school. That's why it's so strange. This is not like her. She wasn't the type to stay out all night. And if she did, for some reason, I know she would have found a way to call. Especially back in these days. Like, like we said, the family shared a cell phone. This is before we would just shoot our family a text message. These are the times when phone calls happened a lot more frequently than they do now. That was like the primary form of communication. So even if it was late, she would have probably called, or at least the next morning she would have called. So for her to be looking her sister to be looking the whole next day, and still there's no word from her. It's not right.
Teeth
Yeah, it's. Nothing is adding up there. And on top of that, it's just hard to believe. I guess in my mind what I'm thinking is that, you know, Dave took her to this area because it was unknown. Maybe he knew it a little better because he was from Alaska. So is it possible that this was just kind of a diversion in the first place, that he was taking her to this festival, but then he had ulterior motives that he was going to try and do something to her?
Daphne
Well, yeah, because he also had friends there and a friend who lived or a friend who supposedly lived close enough by for him to walk to, even though he somehow couldn't even do that within a two hour time period.
Teeth
Yeah, it's like, were you walking in the wrong direction? Like, why weren't you able to find this friend's house that you were so confident that you were going to find who was going to give you a jump?
Daphne
Or are you lying? Because we don't know this friend's name. We don't know where their house actually was. That hasn't been released. So as far as we know, police know that's a lie.
Teeth
And on top of that, Aaron's family doesn't even know this friend's name, which is insane.
Daphne
So we can't even look this person up and see if this part of the story is even real or if he used this two hour window to do something with Aaron's body. Just total, totally throwing that out there. And that was his. Oh well, I was aimlessly walking around for two hours. And that's his alibi, right?
Teeth
Yeah. I mean that's a pretty good chunk of time. That's a pretty good window to be able to do something and then head back to the fairgrounds and quote, unquote, look for Eren.
Daphne
Yeah. So he is suspicious from the beginning. Her family is not getting very much help from him. And Aaron's father, Kurt actually flew from Baltimore to join in the search for Aaron. And although he was at first kind of hopeful that it was just a misunderstanding, he admitted, I don't know if she thought he had abandoned her or what. I am optimistic, hoping she went on an impromptu vacation. That's what I want to think. Despite his positive outlook, the family was growing discouraged after days of non stop searching. So Kurt added, quote, there are so many areas to search. Alaska is so immense. I look up at the hills and I don't know what to think. And because Erin stood at nearly 6ft tall, she was 5 foot 11. It seemed kind of shocking that she could vanish without anybody seeing her. And her sisters also maintain that she would not have gone down without a fight. And yet nobody seemed to hear or see a thing. Thing.
Teeth
Well, we have to remember that this is a forest fair, so there's a lot of trees. It's kind of a more rural area. So it's, it would be easier to get away with something like this.
Daphne
It also, we've talked about this in the past how like sometimes almost if there's more people around and it's loud.
Teeth
They don't really see things.
Daphne
Yeah, like you can kind of get away with things because people are distracted. There's other sounds happening. You know, this is a fair.
Teeth
This really reminds me of the Oregon Country Fair. I used to work there like years ago on recycling crew. But there are so many trails and paths through the woods that somebody could get lost very easily. And also something could happen without anybody seeing, especially at night. There's people just walking around through the woods at night and there's very little light going on in that area.
Daphne
So right and then we know that Aaron was last seen by the road, by his car, by Dave's car.
Teeth
So according to Dave.
Daphne
According to Dave. But if that part at least was true, maybe he was luring her out to his car that way and that's how nobody saw anything.
Teeth
It's very possible. Well, Stephanie made hundreds of missing posters and plastered them around Girdwood, trying to garner as much attention as possible. Even in the early days of the Internet, Stephanie distributed her photo online, and they contacted her friends scattered across the country, especially in San Francisco, to see if anybody had heard from Erin or if she had decided to make a spontaneous trip back to sf. And this really didn't seem like the case, but basically they were leaving no stone left unturned. Stephanie also reached out to local media outlets, who helped the case gain traction as well. And it was then that the local police seemed to realize the gravity of the situation. Now, with the pressure from the family bringing the story to the local media, concern began to spread. And law enforcement started an investigation a bit more fitting of how dire Aaron's circumstances seemed to be. And of course, you know, at first, Dave seemed like he was being pretty helpful in this investigation to search for Aaron. And in his first interview with police, he reiterated to them what he had told Stephanie. That he last saw Aaron around 6pm that they arrived at his car to find the headlights on and the battery dead. And that for unknown reasons, she supposedly stayed behind with the car alone while he wandered around aimlessly for two hours looking for the home of a friend. When he returned to the car two hours later, without having found this friend, Aaron was gone and his car miraculously worked again. Then he claimed that he drove around looking for Aaron for hours, but he just couldn't find her and assumed that she was angry about how long he had been gone and that she had just taken off. But to the frustration of Erin's family, Dave stopped cooperating after a while, insisting that he had shared everything he knew, meaning her family had lost their last connection to Aaron. My friends, spring is coming up. We're doing some spring cleaning, and we're also buying some new things to be able to replace those old things.

Daphne
Let's get a little bit more into Dave, because although Dave had no known criminal history, there were allegedly a few women who came forward to the family with stories of his predatory behavior.
Teeth
Oh, that's really, really interesting considering Aaron went missing in his company.
Daphne
Exactly. And I wish we had more details on this, but. But we don't. And unfortunately this did little to lead them toward a real conclusion. Because even if this is true and he was predatory towards other women, it kind of helps give us an idea of what he's potentially capable of. But it does not present anything concrete to us. And Alaska State Troopers were not able to find anybody who saw or spoke with Dave during the time that he was supposedly on foot looking for this friend. Nor were there any reports of his car having been seen either parked or circling the vicinity of the festival. Which is why it's so hard to verify his story because there are no witnesses. Again, could he be telling the truth and he's just a shitty guy who left her behind? Of Course, but the details are strange. He stopped cooperating. He refused to take a polygraph, and no one can attest to his bizarre claims, even though he said he walked around asking a ton of people if they had seen her. So here's another thing. There was a lot of people there that day, and the chances of police being able to track those people all down are very slim. So maybe he did ask some people, and those people never reached out to police or had no idea that any of this even happened. But police couldn't find anyone.
Teeth
And that's just like the frustrating part about this story is the fact that it took place in 1995. Again, I just want to reiterate with the cell phone thing, because not only would police potentially be able to track his phone and, you know, get some pings off some towers, but potentially people at the festival could have been taking videos or pictures.
Daphne
Yeah.
Teeth
And could have seen something in the background. So it's just, it's really, really unfortunate here.
Daphne
Yeah, we have. We have no tools to kind of match this up. And there was almost too many people there to get answers for this particular situation. So in the days and weeks following her missing persons report being filed, many searches were organized and joined by family, volunteers, and experts alike. But the rugged and mountainous Alaska terrain posed a challenge, even though it was during the summer. You know, the grounds of the Girdwood Forest Fair were searched multiple times in the weeks after her disappearance, as were the surrounding town and wilderness, including the river that runs parallel to the festival grounds, in case something had happened to her right there. But they found nothing. Three weeks after Erin vanished, another search employing about 20 people, including members of the Nordic Ski Patrol and the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group, cut through heavy brush for hours just looking for any trace of her. Now, they did come across some broken down cars and, like, plenty of trash, but nothing that pointed to any sign of Aaron's whereabouts. On multiple sunny search days, helicopters circled overhead and search dogs were marched through the area. And investigators also did receive some tips and alleged sightings, but none of these led them back to Erin either. Detective Steve Wilhelmi, who is a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers, said, quote, we've had reports from people who said that they had seen her, and we followed up on those, but they've turned out to be the wrong person. We've had a lot of input from the public. She hasn't shown up anywhere. Now we're going back to where she was last seen. We're going to comb that area with a fine tooth comb to See if she wandered off and got hurt or whatever. But by the end of July, so that same month, the search really slowed down with no direction and no evidence whatsoever. Like, it's truly like she simply vanished out of thin air.
Teeth
What's interesting here is that when we're talking about the fact that they went back to Dave's car and they found that the battery had died, it would have been so easy for Aaron to just say, hey, I'm not going to wait at the car. I'm just gonna go back to the festival and just chill where there's people around. So it really does feel like something nefarious happened. I don't think she just wandered off and fell into a river or went to go searching for Dave and lost her way. It just doesn't feel like that.
Daphne
The problem is, is that with Dave's story, if he's lying, this is a pretty good deflection story because he can see, say, yeah, I last saw her on the side of the road next to my car. And then police could say, well, then some freak probably drove by and snatched her. You know, it's so vague that it gives endless opportunity for somebody else to be responsible.
Teeth
Right. And that's what I was going to say is that those are the two scenarios that run through my mind is that either Dave had something to do with it, or potentially he's telling the truth and somebody else picked her up or whatever. But I will say that it was Dave's responsibility to take care of Aaron. He's the one that picked her up for the date. He's the one that drove her to Girdwood and then he just left her there.
Daphne
Well, and I want to add that his car was not searched because they didn't have the grounds to search it. They didn't have a search warrant because there was no evidence that she was met with foul play and he stopped cooperating. So it's not like we know that, oh, they searched his car and it was clean. There was no signs of blood or anything like that. We would have known. At the very least her DNA would have somewhat been in the car somewhere because she had been in that car for almost an hour during the drive.
Teeth
Right.
Daphne
Which would not have been suspicious on its head. But yeah, it's really difficult because that would be probably the point of transfer if he had done something to her. But because his story is so vague, because we have no witnesses, we can't say if he's telling the truth or not.
Teeth
Well, as you just mentioned, there were a Ton of searches done for Aaron. And among those searching was the mother of Bonnie Craig, who disappeared one year before Aaron and actually turned up murdered. Now, Bonnie was found dead in McHugh Creek, which is also along the Seward highway, which is where Aaron disappeared from. At the time of Aaron's disappearance, Bonnie's case was not yet solved. And her mom, Karen Campbell, admitted to the press that she feared that Erin was met with the same fate as her daughter and wondered if perhaps the pair were taken at the hands of a local serial killer that was just preying upon young women, maybe even using the Seward highway to stalk his victims. So let's look a little bit into Bonney's case. Bonnie was born and raised in Alberta, Canada. But after Karen married her stepfather, Gary, when Bonnie was about 3 years old, the family started moving around Canada and the United States for Gary's job with an oil company. So Bonnie wound up attending six different elementary schools and two different junior high schools before the family settled in Anchorage, which they did in 1988. So six years before her disappearance. Now, Bonnie graduated high school in the spring of 1994 and stayed local for college, though, interestingly, she was planning to transfer down to a university in San Francisco to join her boyfriend. Described by her parents as a model teenager, Bonnie was active in her school's chapter of Students Against Drunk Driving. She played in the orchestra, participated in three different sports, and she held down a job at a grocery store. And she was just 18 when she vanished. On her way to attend her classes at the University of Alaska campus, which is in southeast Anchorage, where she was studying psychology in hopes of becoming a therapist. She left her father's house in Anchorage early on the morning of September 28, 1994. So about 10 months prior to Erin going missing, she left around 5:00am that morning, headed for the bus stop about 2.5 miles or 4 kilometers away from the house, which was a 45 minute walk that she did multiple times a week. She was bound for a 7am English class, but she never made it there. Hours later, Bonnie's body was found in McHugh Creek, south of Anchorage along the Seward highway and just 25 minutes from Girdwood. Cause at 2:15 that afternoon, a woman hiking near the creek spotted Bonnie's body floating in the water. And then she called police.
Daphne
Now, initially, police questioned whether she had fallen into the water from that 30 foot cliff above her and maybe bumped her head on the way down. But when Karen viewed her daughter's body, she noticed defensive wounds on her hand. And the discovery of another disturbing detail ruled out the possibility of her death being an accident. Because Bonnie had been sexually assaulted. The police initially concealed this from both her family and the public as they came to the disturbing conclusion that she had been abducted while on her way to that bus stop. You know, she had this long walk, would have been very easy for somebody to drive up to her and snatch her. Sadly, she was then raped and bludgeoned in the back of the head before being tossed off the cliff to her final resting place in the water 30ft below. Now, ultimately, Bonnie's cause of death was drowning. So the strikes to her head had likely knocked her out before she was submerged. But no answers came to the case, which is why many wondered if she and Aaron's cases were connected. Just like Heath was saying her mom was. Like, maybe there's a serial killer. Because David has never been a public suspect. He's never been officially declared a suspect because this is not a homicide investigation. So it just kind of left people to really speculate any possibility.
Teeth
Of course, we've got one girl who's murdered and another young woman who goes missing, and that's only about 25 minutes apart. So that's very close.
Daphne
Yeah. So they were speculating on this possible connection for a long time. But In November of 2006, so over 12 years later, DNA entered into CODIS would match the seminal fluid found on Bonnie's body when 36 year old Kenneth Dion had been arrested at the other side of the country in New Hampshire on burglary charges. So back in 1994, when this guy was living in Anchorage, he had done time for both robbery and assault and was released from prison. Just a few months prior to Bonnie's murder, his defense team attempted to spin this murder to appear like an accident. Of course they're trying to get away with it. And his team is basically alleging that Kenneth and Bonnie were engaged in a consensual scene, sexual relationship, of course, and that they just had sex on the morning of her death and then she fell off the cliff by accident.
Teeth
That is the most dumbass story I've ever fucking heard in my life.
Daphne
They always use that one.
Teeth
But like ser. She had plans. She was going to an English class, she was walking to school. And then she just randomly says, you know what? On this walk, I think I want to have sex with somebody right now. And then, whoops, I slipped. No, no.
Daphne
And this was especially hard to believe for the prosecution and her family and friends, because Bonnie at this time was in a committed, loving Long term relationship. So she's not going to step out on her partner to have sex with this random criminal, you know? Yeah.
Teeth
This piece of shit also on top.
Daphne
Of that leaves found at the top of the cliff bore her blood, which proved that she had been injured before she fell. And the medical examiner also concluded that the injuries to the back of her head were consistent with trauma from a blunt force object, not from a fall. So Kenneth Deon was convicted of Bonnie's rape and murder on June 15th of 2011, and he was sentenced to 124 years in prison.
Teeth
Good. He ain't never getting out. But unfortunately, there is no proof that Kenneth was involved in what happened to Aaron, and no details have been released on his whereabouts when she went missing. But Aaron's family believes that she is deceased and that she was met with foul play, likely at the hands of Dave Combs.
Daphne
Occam's Razor.
Teeth
Absolutely. Now, it is definitely a possibility that she may have, like, wandered off in an attempt to look for Dave and something happened. But Erin's family believes that this is pretty unlikely given that she could have easily walked back to the fairgrounds, as I mentioned earlier, or to a local bar or restaurant if she didn't want to stay and wait at Dave's car. Now, of course, the family has also entertained the possibility that she came upon someone else who had the motive to harm her that evening that was not Dave. But with no evidence pointing them in either direction, it's really just impossible to say. By the end of July 1995, so within only a matter of weeks, David already stopped assisting the family in speaking with law enforcement. Like Daphne mentioned, he was asked to take a polygraph test and declined, storming out of the police station and refusing to speak with investigators after they requested that he take one.
Daphne
And something that we want to mention is that her family says that his. In his car, in Dave's car, her fingerprints were found, which would then indicate to us that his car was searched. But there are no public records that suggest or detail that his car was searched. So I want to mention that because obviously we were just talking about the fact that it was not searched. As far as the public knows, it wasn't. But it's possible at some point that it was. But we don't know how thoroughly or at what point that would have been done. But at least we know that she was in that car. And her family really wants to know more if that search was even done. They want to know if anything else was found. But the problem is that this is an unsolved case, so it's very possible police also know a lot more than what they have released.
Teeth
That's. That's very true. Because a lot of times they want to, you know, keep the integrity of the investigation, so they won't release certain.
Daphne
Details, and sometimes they don't release a lot of pertinent details because they want to utilize that to catch the person responsible. So they very well might have searched his car, might have found something big, and we don't know it well.
Teeth
Aaron's family have continued to beg, both publicly and privately, for Dave to come forward with any information, but he has remained silent except for one single conversation on the phone in recent years. Stephanie revealed this in Aaron's Facebook group, but added that he unfortunately did not offer up any more information. To this day, there have been no publicly acknowledged suspects, and Dave Combs remains the sole person of interest here now a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers. His name is Austin McDaniel. He shared. I'm not able to share specific investigative techniques or what specific investigative actions have been taken so that I do not interfere with the ongoing investigation. In a 2017 interview, Alaska State Trooper Randy McFerrin explained that he has attempted to speak with Dave many times in the decades since Aaron disappeared, and he has refused every time. Randy said he's the last person to see her. As far as we know, he gave a few initial statements when she disappeared, but we want to talk to him again. That's all. But the thing here is that, like, if you're the last person that was around Aaron when she disappeared, why would you not spend the rest of your life trying to help with the investigation? What. What is there to lose for you?
Daphne
I mean, he wouldn't even have to do that. Like, I think in his.
Teeth
Oh, I'm not saying, like, you know, go out there and investigate yourself, but at least be helpful. Talk to the. The police.
Daphne
Yeah, I mean, I want. Again, I don't necessarily believe that he's innocent of this. I think he is incredibly suspicious because he's not giving us reasons to believe that he's not suspicious because he's not talking anymore. So I think if he is innocent of. Of wrongdoing or foul play or whatever, I think that he is afraid that if he keeps talking to police and lets them investigate him that they're going to try to pin something on him that he didn't do or something is.
Teeth
Potentially going to slip out and he's going to mess up.
Daphne
If he's. If he's guilty Right.
Teeth
If he's guilty.
Daphne
If he's guilty, he has all the reason not to talk to them. Because if there's no evidence, that's why so much time has gone by. Because if he is guilty and he's not talking, well, then there's no way that they're going to find out that he did it. Right. Because there's no fricking evidence. So it's. It's really difficult. But, yeah, from our minds, we're like, if you're innocent, then talk. And maybe he's like, God, I just took this girl out and now I'm roped up in this. Like, I don't want to have to deal with this. I didn't do it. That's it.
State Farm Representative
Bye.
Daphne
I could fully understand that, but it's just hard to believe that he just. Because we also see in a lot of other cases where somebody like Dave was cooperative, said what he knew, said, sorry, that's all I know. And then police are able to rule him out, but police have not been able to do that because they still have questions that he won't answer. So if you would just answer all their. If you really didn't do this, answer all their questions, and then they'll stop bugging you.
Teeth
Yeah, the stories, they sound made up. He's not being super cooperative with the investigation. And the real shitty part of this case is that there was nothing left behind. They didn't. It's not like they found something of Aaron's, you know, down the road and they're like, ah, here's a clip clue. Like there was just nothing there.
Daphne
Yeah, this is a rough case. Well, In September of 1996, Stephanie and her family moved back to Everett, Washington. But she vowed to continue her visits to Girdwood to search, which she very much has done. She is trying so hard to solve this.
Teeth
Yeah, like we said in the beginning, she really is a crusader for this case, truly.
Daphne
I mean, she said, quote, I will never give up looking for her. Sadly, the year stacked up and Aaron's case was handed off to the Cold Case Unit. And apparently the case hasn't received a tip or a lead in years. But Randy has assured her family that any tip that comes in would be considered and taken seriously. He maintained, quote, we just try to keep Aaron's story in the public eye as much as possible. It's not over until we find her. Aaron's disappearance is still currently considered a missing persons investigation and not a homicide investigation, simply because there is no evidence to the contrary. Randy explained, quote, without a body. We don't know for sure if she was met with foul play or she died of natural causes. That's often quite a big hurdle to get over. He did, however, add that Aaron's case documents total over a thousand pages spread between multiple binders.
Teeth
That's, that's a lot on, on a case that seems like there's very little.
Daphne
I know, I'm like, what else do you guys got? But also, we know that they interviewed so many people at that fair and there were so many searches and all of that has to be documented as well. But I do wonder for sure how much they have that they have not been able to Release. Well, in 2017, the family offered up a $35,000 reward in hopes of breathing new life into the investigation. With Stephanie saying, we just need something. It's really like she vanished into thin air. When you have a missing person in your family, I don't think you ever really get to that grieving point. Over 2,000 people go missing in Alaska every year, which is twice the national average, likely due to the rugged terrain, the fickle weather, and the amount of outdoor sports and activities available to visitors and locals. Randy McFerrin elaborated on this, saying, we live in a very big place and a very rural place and it's, I don't want to say easy for people to disappear, but people get lost here and it's hard to find them. At one time, the Alaska State Troopers Cold Case investigation unit boasted four full time employees, but 2015 budget cuts resulted in its closure. However, the unit was revived in April of 2017 with Randy McFerrin as its sole investigator. And again, this is for the whole of Alaska State Troopers. He admits that Aaron's case is an atypical missing persons case, saying, there's a lot of very strange things about this. It's not like she went for a hike in the woods and never came back or went out on a boat and the boat sank. She was last seen in a public place around lots of people and then all of a sudden she's gone. As for Dave Combs, he reportedly owns a business and still resides in Anchorage, Alaska. It has been 30 years this month since Erin went missing and she would now be 54 years old. Stephanie still updates her sister's Facebook page frequently and she and her family hold out hope that her case will be solved, stating it's been a great outlet to share Erin's story, to keep her face and name out in the world. We don't think she's alive, but she deserves Justice. At the time of her disappearance, Erin was wearing a black leather jacket, black jeans, a black and white striped shirt and boots. She stood at 5ft 11 inches tall and weighed 145 pounds. She had a tattoo of a blue flower on her chest. If you have any information about the disappearance of Erin Gilbert, please contact the police department in Wasilla, Alaska at 907-352-5401. Production: Dark West Productions
In episode 522 of Going West: True Crime, hosts Daphne Woolsoncroft and Heath Merryman delve into the mysterious disappearance of Erin Gilbert, a 24-year-old woman who vanished without a trace during a summer festival in the Alaskan wilderness in July 1995. This case, set against the backdrop of the serene yet unforgiving Alaska landscape, remains unsolved and continues to baffle investigators and Erin’s family alike.
Erin Gilbert, originally from Everett, Washington, was known for her adventurous spirit and artistic flair. Born on May 4, 1971, Erin was the youngest of three sisters and maintained a close-knit relationship with her family throughout her life. After her parents divorced, Erin moved to San Francisco with her father to complete high school and later explored various parts of the United States before settling in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1994 to live with her sister Stephanie and brother-in-law Aaron Merryman.
[05:03] Daphne: "She was a bit of an explorer, moving around frequently and making friends wherever she went."
Erin’s active lifestyle included part-time work at a daycare and plans to enroll in beauty school, showcasing her dynamic and forward-moving nature.
The pivotal moment in Erin’s life occurred on July 1, 1995, during the Girdwood Forest Fair, Alaska’s premier summer festival. Erin met David "Dave" Combs at Chilkoot Charlie’s, a well-known local bar, and the two decided to attend the fair together the following day.
[07:40] Teeth: "They hit it off while playing pool, and Dave invited Erin to join him at the fair."
On the afternoon of July 1st, Dave picked up Erin from Stephanie’s house, and together they attended the festival until around 6 PM, when they were last seen heading back to Dave’s car near the fairgrounds. Shortly after, Dave reported that his car battery had died, claiming he needed to get help to jump-start it.
[10:45] Daphne: "Erin and Dave enjoy just kind of milling about the vendor booths at the fair, and then they headed to the festival's beer garden to meet up with some friends of Dave's."
However, Dave's subsequent actions raised immediate suspicions. Instead of seeking assistance from fellow festival-goers, he purportedly walked alone for two hours in search of a friend who could help, leaving Erin unattended by his car until he returned to find her missing.
[13:58] Teeth: "How would she have made it home okay? Like, it's hard to tell if he's genuinely concerned or he's feeling guilty."
This unusual behavior became the focal point of the investigation, casting significant doubt on Dave’s account of the events.
Initial searches in the lush, expansive terrain of the Alaskan wilderness yielded no results. Despite extensive efforts by the family, volunteers, and law enforcement, Erin remained missing, and Dave Combs emerged as the primary person of interest due to his inexplicable departure from the scene.
[22:09] Teeth: "It's always gonna be suspicious when somebody goes on a date with another person and then doesn't come home."
Erin’s family vehemently dismissed the possibility that she left voluntarily, emphasizing her strong familial ties and proactive nature.
[23:13] Teeth: "Well, we have one girl who's murdered and another young woman who goes missing, and that's only about 25 minutes apart. So that's very close."
As investigators probed deeper, Dave’s reluctance to cooperate and refusal to undergo polygraph testing further intensified suspicions against him.
Dave Combs, without a known criminal history, became a central figure in Erin’s disappearance. Over time, additional information about his past surfaced, including allegations of predatory behavior towards other women, though concrete details remain scarce.
[31:22] Teeth: "That's really, really interesting considering Erin went missing in his company."
Despite these unsettling revelations, law enforcement struggled to gather substantial evidence linking Dave directly to Erin’s disappearance, primarily due to a lack of witnesses and physical evidence.
[37:04] Daphne: "He wouldn't even have to do that. Like, I think in his head he's like, oh, well, I just took this girl out and now I'm roped up in this. I didn't do it. That's it."
Erin’s family continued to press for more information, particularly questioning whether Dave’s car had been thoroughly searched for any incriminating evidence, such as Erin’s fingerprints or DNA.
The podcast also explores the chilling parallels between Erin's case and the earlier disappearance of Bonnie Craig in 1994. Bonnie, an 18-year-old student, was tragically found murdered along the Seward Highway, not far from where Erin went missing.
[42:00] Teeth: "Of course, we've got one girl who's murdered and another young woman who goes missing, and that's only about 25 minutes apart. So that's very close."
Karen Campbell, Bonnie’s mother, expressed fears that both cases might be connected, hinting at the possibility of a local serial killer targeting young women. However, despite these fears, no direct link has been established between Bonnie’s case and Erin’s disappearance.
[43:15] Teeth: "She had plans. She was going to an English class, she was walking to school. And then she just randomly says, you know what? On this walk, I think I want to have sex with somebody right now. And then, whoops, I slipped. No, no."
Bobeding a semblance of closure, the discovery and subsequent conviction of Kenneth Dion for Bonnie’s murder provided some answers but left Erin’s case unresolved.
Decades after her disappearance, Erin Gilbert remains missing, with her case officially classified as a missing person investigation rather than a homicide due to the absence of a body or definitive evidence. Despite multiple search efforts, including those by specialized cold case units, no new leads have emerged.
[50:03] Teeth: "Yeah, the stories, they sound made up. He's not being super cooperative with the investigation. And the real shitty part of this case is that there was nothing left behind."
Erin’s sister, Stephanie, remains unwavering in her quest for justice, continually advocating for renewed attention to the case and encouraging the public to share Erin’s story in hopes of sparking new leads.
[50:40] Teeth: "Like we said in the beginning, she really is a crusader for this case, truly."
In 2017, a $35,000 reward was offered to encourage new tips, reflecting the family's continued hope for resolution.
[48:22] Daphne: "He's not being super cooperative with the investigation."
As of 2025, the investigation remains open, with Erin still considered missing. The Alaska State Troopers’ Cold Case Unit, though understaffed, continue to review any potential leads that emerge, holding onto the hope that Erin will one day be found and justice served.
[51:53] Daphne: "We don't think she's alive, but she deserves Justice."
Erin Gilbert’s disappearance is a haunting reminder of the mysteries that can unfold even in the most picturesque settings. Going West: True Crime meticulously unpacks the complexities of this case, shedding light on the unanswered questions and the relentless pursuit for truth by Erin’s family. As listeners, we are left pondering the enigmatic circumstances surrounding Erin’s last known moments and the elusive figure of Dave Combs, whose actions continue to demand scrutiny.
