Hello everybody. Thank you so much for tuning in today. A lot of you I know will be familiar with this story. A lot of you guys recommended it. You've probably seen it in the headlines. But if you want to learn more or you haven't heard of this story at all, this is for you because we need to keep talking about it. So this killer is caught.
Te
Yes. And as we see, you know, in many cases that are unfolding and getting a lot of media attention, the poor families of Spencer and Monique are watching. Just a ton of lies and rumors being spread. So we're going to state the known facts in this case and help put some of those rumors to bed.
Daphne
I think headlines can be so misleading. People read a headline and they go off of it without taking in the context or reading what the article says. And that is happening so much here, which is why Heath and I love doing these happening now cases because we did all that digging for you guys. So thank you for tuning in. And our hearts really go out to the families enduring this horrific tragedy.
Te
Yes, it is just so, it feels so senseless and so sad. But it really needs a lot of attention. So please make sure that you share this episode as well. It's very, very important. So without further ado, this is episode 571 of Going West. So let's get into. This is getting nationwide attention as there are a lot of questions here. Police in Columbus, Ohio, investigating the murders of a dentist and his wife who were found shot to death inside of their home earlier this week. With their crying children still in inside, the urgent murder investigation after an Ohio dentist and his wife were found shot to death in their home. Investigators say Dr. Spencer Tepe and his wife Monique, both in their late 30s, were found dead Tuesday morning inside of their home there in Wineland Park.

Spencer Tepe was born on December 9, 1988 in Ohio. He graduated high school in 2007 and headed straight to Ohio State University that fall to study Spanish and biology, earning his Bachelor of Science in 2012 before continuing his education at OSU's College of Dentistry to pursue his passion. Heath, where is the go Buckeyes?
Te
Actually, I think they say O H or something like that.
Daphne
Give it to us. Give it to us. Spencer was a big Buckeyes.
Te
Yes, he was. He was a huge Buckeyes fan and also a Bengals fan.
Daphne
Yes, he was. So while in college he was in the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and even joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in Columbus, which he has actually remained a part of since. And we want to play a little clip from an interview that he took part in in 2021 because we think it's like a really good chance to hear his voice, hear him talk, hear how passionate he was about this organization and also hear his little to his big brother and his little's mom talk about how wonderful he was I've just.
Heath
Tried to remain a role model as best as I can and demonstrate the importance of an education and just really kind of encourage him to. To pursue more and to do more. My favorite thing about being a Big has been how I've become part of his family and he's become part of mine. And it's gotten to a point now where his extended family comes into town from North Carolina or from California, and we all assemble, get together, and break bread together, and it's the most fun thing in the world. Spencer's always been there, like, to push him a little bit more than what he wants to do, like he feels that he can do. He's been really supportive, like, yeah, I have a supportive family, but he's always been there as well. And almost anyone can be a good big brother, big sister. You just have to remain committed, you know, just be willing to show up and be available and be willing to listen. He's really almost been a role model for me in return. So it's been a really, really nice experience. I'm just gonna continue to remain as supportive as I can and encouraging as I can.
Te
I'm really proud of him, and I'm.
Heath
Excited to see what his future holds for him.
Te
Seems like they just had nothing but good things to say about Spencer.
Daphne
Yeah, which really goes for just about Everybody. Well, in 2017, at age 28, Spencer earned his doctor of dental surgery and soon focused on his interest in dental implant therapy. Eventually, he began working at Athens Dental Depot in Athens, Ohio, which is a small city southeast of Columbus. And in his downtime, Spencer loved playing golf, traveling, and most of all, spending time with his growing family in their GoFundMe, which was started by their family just to, of course, you know, raise money for their children, etc. Spencer's cousin Audrey wrote of him, quote, spencer was the soul of every gathering. Grand in personality, yet calm and steady and kind. In 2021, while happily working as a dentist, Spencer Tepe married the love of his life. Monique Sabotersky was born on October 14, 1986, in Ohio as well. And according to her family, she had a background in childhood education and absolutely loved running as well as baking for her kids, who she stayed at home with to raise and care for once. Their first was born in 2021. Spencer's family said, quote, monique was a loving, patient, and joyful mother whose warmth defined her. Her kindness made people feel instantly at home. Also in their GoFundMe. Spencer's cousin Audrey wrote of Monique Mo' Nique's. Charm and infectious smile lit up every room. She was warm, with a strength that inspired everyone around her. Of both of them, she continued, quote, together they were truly remarkable inside and out. They were a solid pair with a bright future. They were the proud parents of two beautiful children. And every day they showed up with unwavering love and devotion to their family. Now, Monique's marriage to Spencer actually was not her first marriage, but her second. Her first was with a man named Michael. And their marriage has fueled a ton of speculation online. So we just want to talk about it for a second because there are a lot of rumors out there that do not seem to have any kind of backing to them whatsoever.
Te
Yeah. So mo', Nique, who is two years older than Spencer, was married to a man named Michael in 2015, and they divorced two years later in 2017 after Monique filed. Now, there was a restraining order put out for both of them against each other, which apparently was automatic. It was like a standard mutual restraining order, which actually some marriages in the state of Ohio have placed on them automatically to prevent both parties from using joint assets, selling joint property, hiding assets, harassing each other during the divorce proceedings, etc. And nothing else regarding this divorce has been concretely discussed. But many people are spreading lies that there was abuse in this marriage, but there are absolutely no reports of that. They also didn't have any kids together and they successfully divorced. And that was nearly nine years ago. So we'll kind of keep speculation on this angle, of course, to a total minimum, unless, you know, something comes out that shows anything different or nefarious.
Daphne
Yeah, it looks like a lot of what people are finding is for a different Michael. And we're purposefully leaving his surname out of this because right now it doesn't seem he has anything to do with any of this. But some people are using the criminal history of a different Michael blank and attaching it to Monique's ex husband. But her ex husband does not have a known criminal record. So just putting that one out there.
Te
Yeah. So if you see that online, you can kind of disregard it until there's any sort of concrete information that would potentially tie this Michael ex husband to the crime itself.
Daphne
But there seriously are so many TikToks and YouTube videos of people like completely doxing this guy for absolutely no reason.
Te
Of course people want to find connections. They want to see if they can.
Daphne
Web sleuth, but they want to solve it themselves.
Te
Right, but right now, there is just no information on that. So like you said, Daphne Spencer was working in Athens as a dentist beloved by everyone who worked there and visited. And his wife Monique was a stay at home mom raising their two kids who are four and one when this story's unfolding now. The family of four lived in Columbus, Ohio in a new build a 2,500 square foot house built in 2020 that has four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. Located in the Wineland park neighborhood, which is described as an urban suburban mix with community gardens and, you know, this beautiful historic charm. According to niche.com though, many residents also point out that it's still inner city and that it's not very safe. But it was in this house just 10 days before this episode comes out that something horrific happened in the middle of the night. It's worth noting that the dental office that Spencer worked for was closed from December 24th through the 26th, but they were open for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. So on Tuesday, December 30, Spencer was scheduled for a regular day at the office, but he never made it in.
Daphne
And this was very unusual for Spencer to not show up to work. According to his loved ones and colleagues, he deeply cared about his patients and helping people and he was very responsible and very hardworking. So that morning when he didn't show up to work, his co workers were immediately concerned. They called him, they called his wife, his home, but no one was answering the phone. And especially since they couldn't get in contact with any of them, it was very worrisome. So his boss, Dr. Mark Valrose, actually placed a call to 911 that very morning at 8:58am and here is a clip of that phone call.
Heath
Columbus Police Tech 107 I guess I would like to ask for a wellness check on an individual at their home. This individual, Spencer, works with me and he did not show up to work this morning and we cannot get a.
Te
Hold of him or his family.
Heath
He is always on time and he would contact us if there was any issues whatsoever. And he I just don't know how else to say this, like we're very, very concerned because this is very out of character and we can't get in touch with his wife, which is probably the more concerning thing. Okay, we will send somebody over as soon as we have an officer available.
Daphne
So Obviously the, the 911 operator is being very calm, some say too calm, while this doctor is clearly worried and almost forcing the 911 operator to care about what he's saying and to take what he's saying seriously.
Te
Right. And Also this, this doctor is saying that, hey, I'm in Florida. My employees told me that Spencer didn't show up to work today. So that's why I'm calling right now.
Daphne
And he's calling from a different state, which again goes to show you how much they really are worried that something is wrong. And he is saying this is not normal.
Te
This is out of character for Spencer.
Daphne
Please help. So shortly after this call at 9:22am Police arrived at the home and knocked on both the front and the back door repeatedly. But nobody answered. Which is why the call that we just played wasn't the only call made into 91 1. It was one of at least two, three phone calls made about the Tepes that morning. So some 30 or so minutes after the police left at 9:56am 911 received a call from a friend of the families saying that they could hear the children inside the house. So here is an audio clip from that phone call.
Heath
The emergency there. Police are medical, maybe both, I guess. I don't know. I'm kind of doing the.
Te
Well, they had a call out there.
Heath
They knocked on the door, front door and back door multiple times and there was no answer. Yeah, no answer. I can hear kids inside and I.
Te
Swear I think I heard one yell.
Heath
But we can't get in.
Daphne
Then Spencer's co workers arrived on the scene and they called the police too.
Heath
What's the emergency there? Our. Our boss did not report to work. We haven't been able to get a hold of him for three hours. We are on site and we can hear. Okay, I just talked to somebody there. Okay. I'm just making sure somebody called.
Daphne
And then a few minutes later another friend called reporting to see a body inside the Tepe home.
Heath
What's changed since the last person I talked to? There's a body. There's a body.
Te
There's a body inside.
Heath
Yeah. Okay, hold on one second. Let me get you on the line with the medic. Okay, stay on the line. He appears dead. There's blood. He's laying next to his bed, off of his bed, in his blood. I can't get closer to see more than that. You can tell he's obviously not breathing or anything. Yeah, yeah. Okay. We do have officers responding there.
Daphne
Do you know if he's been ill.
Heath
Or anything like that? No, no, I was just with him yesterday.
Daphne
Just after this call came in. At 10:04am Police arrived back to the Tepe residence in Northwest Columbus, Ohio to check on Spencer and the rest of the family. And once inside they found both 37 year old Spencer and 39 year old Monique inside, deceased, pronouncing them as such. At 10:11am the children, again, who were 4 and 1 years old at the time, were unharmed inside the house, as well as the family dog. But it was clear that they had been alone for hours after this mysterious tragedy occurred. At this point, it has not been released which room they were found in, if they were in the same room or different, what type of firearm was used, whether anything was stolen from the home, nor whether there were signs of a struggle. But we do know that Spencer was shot multiple times, some reports say four times, whereas Monique was reportedly shot once in the chest, leaving many to wonder if Spencer was the target. We know that the gun was not located in the house and may not have been located at all. It does not seem this firearm has been found. So due to that fact, police knew it couldn't have been a murder suicide. Meaning somebody entered the home and murdered them both in cold blood early that morning.
Te
Yes, that would give us a very clear indication that there was a murder suicide if there had been a gun found at the scene, like laying next to either one of them. But that gun is just gone, it's nowhere to be found.
Daphne
Yes, and for anybody saying, wait, the caller said that he was next to his bed, we're gonna get into the room situation when we go over the layout of the house. So just put a pin in that for a sec. But also at the scene, by the way, there were three 9 millimeter shell casings found. So if there were more gunshots than that, which sources hint that there were, like I said, Spencer may have been shot four times. We know Monique was shot at least once. The killer may have removed some from the scene. And then of course, if they were 9mm shell casings, that means this was a 9mm handgun, which is a pretty common standard handgun, which is pretty easy to conceal as well.
Te
Yeah, absolutely. Well, now let's talk a little bit about the room situation, because obviously, considering one of their friends saw them inside, we originally thought that they were both on the ground floor of the two story home, despite it seeming like most of all of the bedrooms were on the second, unless they were in the basement, because the house had a finished basement area that features a foosball table in the listing, you know, probably to show that it would be good for like a game room or a den area. And that basement could be accessed from both inside the house and the backyard. And it also had a glass door, which is why we thought it would be possible that they could have been down there as well. But the front door is also made of glass, so you can see inside of the shade that was on that door was not pulled down. Now obviously, like I said before, in the third 911 call, the friend who's calling in says that he saw Spencer lying next to his bed. And we know that the master bedroom is located upstairs. So did the friend enter the house? Well, let's describe the house better to give you guys a little bit more of a visual in case you can't go to our socials right now to see some of those photos. Now they lived on North Fourth street, which is also US 23. So it is a highway, a three lane one way highway with lots of other houses, apartment buildings and some businesses like a co working space one block down, a community garden, a shelter for runaway and homeless youth called Huckleberry House, etc. But it is mostly residential. Now like I said earlier, the house was a new development and it was finished in 2020. And actually there are four near identical houses in a row that were all built on a previously empty plot of grass amongst other homes that all came up around the same time. And the Tepes house was the second one in a row of four. So the house directly to their left was at the end of the block. All four of these houses have a square fenced yard featuring a paved patio area and grass that leads to a two car garage. Now the garage is accessed from the street behind the house. It's kind of, basically it's like the house is in the front, then in the back there's an alleyway where the garages are and that's where you would pull your car in.
Daphne
Yeah. And it looks like the row of houses that are behind their house and behind their garage have the same thing. And the garages face each other. So it's like an alley of garages on both sides.
Te
Exactly. So now you guys have a little bit better of a picture of like what this area looks like, what the Property looks like, etc. Now, after the bodies of Monique and Spencer were found inside their home, they were taken in for autopsies. And of course, like we already said, they were found to have been killed by gunshot wounds. And no weapon was found at the scene. But it was quickly treated as a homicide case thanks to the Franklin County Coroner's office's findings. They also determined that they had died sometime between 2am and 5am so in the middle of the night?
Daphne
Yeah, middle of the Night. Their one year old obviously wouldn't be in school yet. Their four year old would have been a winter break for either preschool or kindergarten until at least January 2nd. And then for Spencer, Athens Dental Depot opens at 8. So his start time would have been around 8 o' clock or a little bit earlier, which is why his colleagues were so concerned that he wasn't there by about 9. So, yeah, 2 to 5am on a Tuesday morning, very unlikely they would be awake. So it makes you wonder, did somebody they know come to the house and something happened? Clearly if they had a gun on them, there was malicious intent. So was it a stranger, a home invasion situation? Did Monique and Spencer hear something and try to investigate? Because like you said, Heath, it does seem like at least Spencer was found upstairs in their bedroom. So did somebody creep into the house and go into their room and shoot them while they were sleeping? Spencer was found on the floor. We know that. So did he wake up? Like there's so many questions still.
Te
Yeah. And unfortunately right now we just don't have those answers or those details. We're reporting what has come out and what is available to the public because I think that within the next week or two, we're definitely going to see a lot more developments in this case.
Daphne
Well, we do also know that no firearms were found in the house, but there was also no sign of forced entry, which leads us to believe that either a door was left unlocked or they willingly let this person inside. But based on what the friends were saying on that call, saying, oh, should I just break down the door? It doesn't seem like either of the doors were unlocked. So how did the person leave?
Te
Yeah, it's very interesting because some, something that a lot of people are wondering right now is if like the keypad to the house has something to do with this because there is a keypad to enter that house. And of course police did not enter during their first visit, despite checking the back door as well. But we know that the friends entered the house to check on them thanks to that 911 call. So did the friends know the keypad code? Did they have to break a window or like break a door down to get in?
Daphne
Or you wonder, was a door left unlocked and are these like auto lock doors? Our house has an auto lock door.
Te
That's true. You could leave, you could leave from a door. With, with a lot of different houses, you can leave from a front door or a back door and it will automatically lock when you close that door.
Daphne
Yeah. So when the killer left, did they Just close the door and it locked on its own. Did they know the keypad and they, you know, entered it again to lock the door on their way out? Like, I am so curious about this element.
Te
What I'm most interested in is how they were able to get in in the first place. And that's something that's a big point of contention in this case. Like if the doors were locked, how did they get in? Was there a door unlocked? Like, we don't, we just don't know.
Daphne
Yeah, because it seems like at least after they left the doors were locked. So how did they lock after they left?
Te
And you would imagine at between 2am and 5am they probably had the doors locked and the windows locked. I mean, that's not always the case, but typically people are gonna lock their doors at night, especially around 2:00am yeah.
Daphne
And in this area we're gonna get into the crime as well. So you guys can get a better idea of how safe or not safe this area is. But, you know, I know some door. I'm just thinking about our house again. Our house does not have the kind of locks on any of the doors that lead outside where you can lock it and then close the door behind you. You have to actually lock it from the outside or from the inside if you're already inside. So based on just looking at their doors, the front and the back, they look like the deadbolt kind where you don't just, you know, turn the, the actual doorknob lock and then that locks it. So we're, we're talking so much about this because I think this could help understand who is responsible if it was somebody they knew or if it was a total stranger. Well, there has been more that has been released since this all happened. But let's go back to the day of the murders. Everyone deserves to be connected. After hearing the news of the sudden murders of Monique and Spencer, their devastated family released a statement describing the murders as tragic and senseless. Monique and Spencer's brother in law said, quote, they were extraordinary people whose lives were filled with love, joy and deep connection to others. Spencer was a devoted and proud father, a loving partner and a friend to everyone he met. He was intelligent, warm and endlessly welcoming. A graduate of the Ohio State University and a member of the American Dental Association, Spencer was fluent in Spanish and deeply committed to serving others. He gave back through Big Brothers. He was a huge Bengals and Buckeyes fan and lived life with energy, laughter and generosity. And then earlier we actually already read what he said about mo', Nique, but he continued, quote Together, Spencer and Monique shared a beautiful, strong and deeply happy relationship. They loved to laugh and to build a life rooted in love. They were proud parents of two beautiful children and their beloved Goldendoodle and they created a home filled with warmth, happiness and connection. We are heartbroken beyond words. While no outcome can ever undo their loss, our family is committed to seeing this tragedy fully and fairly brought to justice and to honoring Spencer and Monique by protecting the future of the children they loved so deeply. For those wondering by the way, it appears that the kids are now living with family and they will be raised by family as they fight to figure out what happened here. Now, as far as Spencer's place of employment, they posted this on January 1st quote, to our patient community, it is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of our dear colleague and friend, Dr. Spencer Tepe, as well as his wife Monique. He will be deeply missed by our team and the many patients he cared for over the years. Our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with their families and loved ones during this very difficult time. Our practice will be closed for the remainder of this week. If you have an urgent dental concern, please leave us a message on our emergency line and we will follow up as soon as possible. We will assess our availability for next week's appointments and will be in touch shortly. We ask for your continued patience, support and privacy as our team mourns these terrible losses with gratitude, Dr. Mark Valrose and the Dental Depot team. So it's safe to say that this event totally shook up the community because it felt completely unprecedented, even in a city like Columbus, where crimes do very much occur.
Te
And we do want to talk about this area as far as far as, like, crime is concerned, because we checked the Citizen app to see what other crimes have happened on this street to get like, a better idea of what it's like.
Daphne
And it was very helpful. Get Citizen if you don't have it. Heath and I use it religiously.
Te
Yes, we do. We absolutely do. So basically, on September 27, 2025, so three months before the murders, four houses down, there was a report of people with guns chasing person. Then next door, right outside their house, on November 5, 2025, there was a report of six people fighting pepper spraying each other. Then two doors down from their house, on November 10, 2025, there was a report of, quote, man armed with gun. On November 23, 2025, a house on the street behind the Tepes garage reported, quote, woman hit, man with coffee cup known to carry blades.
Daphne
Some citizen reports have crazy titles.
Te
Oh, yeah. Sometimes it's just absolutely wild what you see on that app.

Like a man wielding machete. Like there's so many crazy things. But that's why this is so important, because it's. I mean, the last three things you read are just in the month before. And one of them involves a firearm and another one involves a group of people.
Te
Yeah. Pepper spraying each other in the face. Well, then two blocks down on December 10th, so the day after Spencer's 37th birthday and just over two weeks before his murder, there was a report of man robbed at gunpoint. I mean, even this week on January 5th, Huckleberry House, which is that shelter for homeless youth, which is a block behind the Tepees house, had a report of gunshot heard at Huckleberry House. So all of this is happening within a couple blocks of their house this past year. And we could have kept going because there are other reports in that neighborhood, but. But those are the closest and kind of felt like the most potentially relevant here.
Daphne
Yeah. And not every 911 call is put on Citizen, but a lot of them are. So it's possible there are other reports, but these in themselves are pretty concerning.
Te
Yeah, they definitely give you a better picture. So now we can all see that there absolutely is gun violence in their neighborhood. But was this a random act of gun violence or was there a personal motive? Well, since the news broke, police have been urging all neighbors, anyone driving by during 2 to 5am on that night to check their security cameras. Their dash cams or come forward with any information. And then on January 5, 2026, police publicly released a video of a person of interest in this case, hoping someone could possibly identify them. And we will post this for you guys to see, but it comes from a nest camera on the street behind the Tepes house. The street where those garages are kind of like a back alley. Which could mean that if this is the suspect, that they entered or exited from the backyard and the back of the house. So it's not automatically assumed that this person entered through the front. It's very possible that they entered through the back.
Daphne
Well, this video was taken sometime between 2 and 5am and there's light snow on the ground outside. You know, it's winter. So the person is wearing a black hooded jacket, Kind of looks like a little bit of a puffer jacket, slim jeans, and dark shoes. The stature in the outfit appears to be that of a man. And they have their hood up, their hands are in their pockets and they're looking down at the ground as they walk. They're not on their phone, uh, they're not doing anything. So just based on the images and the video that have been released, you cannot see this person's face. But with releasing this, somebody could come forward and say, oh, that's me, I was just walking home, or something like that. You know, this could help in other ways. Despite the fact that there is no face in the video. Actually, though, even Spencer's brother in law Rob is taking this footage with a grain of salt, saying, quote, I do think, you know, it's a suspicious looking person there. It also very well could be somebody walking home drunk from a bar. Many others point out that it looks like the person is hiding their face. At one point in the video, they kind of put their hand on their head to push the hood further down. Some think that they might just have been cold because it was around 20 degrees Fahrenheit or negative 7 Celsius. So very, very cold.
Te
Yeah. And you imagine that if somebody was walking home from the bar that night, they would probably have their hood up. They'd probably have their cold hands in their pockets.
Daphne
Yeah, and he's walking very normally. I'll say they're not running, they're not looking around, looking behind them to see if somebody is making chase. But you guys let us know what you think. We're going to post the video, so go check that out on our socials.
Te
Well, I will say real quickly that if you were trying to be discreet, you probably would have your hood up and you probably would be looking at the ground and trying to avoid any cameras detecting you.
Daphne
Yeah, this absolutely could have been part of the ruse. But honestly, it's really shocking that this is all that has been released because we can imagine if they had better, they would have released that instead to really find this person. So you would think that that would tell us that the Tepes and their immediate neighbors didn't have cameras, which feels so rare not to see these days, like even a doorbell camera. But that doesn't appear to be the case because according to Google Street View and photos from outside of the house after the murder occurred, the Tepes have a ring doorbell camera. So either A, the battery was dead, or B, I would imagine the person did not enter through the front of the house.
Te
Well, do you want to talk about the house next door? Because it appears that they may have had cameras, photos.
Daphne
Yes, let's talk about it. So actually, I'll pull up the photo so you and I can see and we're going to post this for you guys. So basically, Google Street View was on the street on the side of their house. So like Heath said earlier, their house is the second house in a row of four.
Te
Yeah, but to. To the end of the block.
Daphne
Yeah. So the house directly to their left is at the end of the block. So for some reason the ha. The. The street next to them is 8 8th and for some reason on 8th there is a recent July 2025 street view. But out in front of their house, if you jump over there, it goes back to 2015, when that whole plot where there's the. The four houses now are. Was just an empty grass field, which is why we know what was there before because of the Google Street View. So you cannot go to the front of the house on Street View. There have been a bunch of photos, as I said, as we will post, but we can't actually look further to see as of July 2025, what kind of cameras their neighbors might have had. So I pull up the street view of the side of the neighbor's house that is on the end of the block, and I'm like, oh my God, Heath. It looks like they have three cameras on the side, two on the side and one on the front of their house. And we're zooming in and Heath makes a very observant point that says, I think those are lights.
Te
Well, they could definitely be lights. I mean, there's two that are like right above the window and they're. They're pointed kind of almost towards each other slightly.
Daphne
Like a light would be.
Te
Yeah. So I wonder if these are cameras or if they're just side, side yard lights. Trying to. Maybe they're motion sensor, motion detecting lights.
Daphne
That bet they are.
Te
They go off when somebody walks past there.
Daphne
I bet they are. And that was so good of you to note that. Because I'm like, oh, my God, they totally have three cameras. This is huge. And you're like, no, I don't think that's what that is.
Te
I mean, it's not definitive. It's possible that they are cameras.
Daphne
No, but I think you're right. I honestly do, because you guys let us know what you think. I'm gonna post it. But not that it really matters for us because it would just matter for the police to see if they are lights or if they're cameras and are they of use. So it's more of just our like sleuthing brain saying, oh, maybe that does prove that the attacker approached from the back because there's all these cameras on the front. But I will say we also looked around this area. There is that business, the. The workspace that's right across the street from the side of their neighbor's house. The house with the lights or the cameras on it. There is a camera outside of that business, but it's not pointing towards the tepe's house. So there are cameras in the area. We just. It doesn't seem like there's very many and we don't know if they're going to help.
Te
We also don't know whose camera it was in that alleyway that picked up that person walking by. But I imagine if you look at the direction that this person is heading, you would imagine that if they were going to go into the Tepes house from the front, they would have to walk through that alley, make a left, go around the block where that neighbor's house is right at the end of the block, and then walk down one more house to get to the Tappies. Right?
Daphne
Yeah. If this person is responsible, them walking would just mean that there are more chances they're going to be picked up by a camera and there's better angles of this person and perhaps the route to their car or their home. And that could help bring answers in itself. But right now we only have this one video and like you're saying we don't know where the house is that caught this footage. So we don't know. Oh, my God. They're literally walking right from where the Tepes house is. Like, we don't know.
Te
Yeah, exactly. Is it further to the right? Further to the left? We don't know.
Daphne
So because we can't speculate on any bit of this video, as is clear from all this mish mosh, it's just important to share it because if this person is innocent, it would be very good for them to see this video and say, holy, that's me. I didn't murder this family.
Heath
Right.
Te
And I think that that was a big point for the police to release. It is hoping that someone would come forward and say, yeah, I was walking home from the bar. I did go through that alley. That's totally me in the video. I didn't do it.
Daphne
Yeah, cross me off.
Te
Well, the day after this surveillance video came out on January 6, the transcript of a concerning call was released. Months before Spencer and Monique were murdered. In April of 2025, a call came in to the local Columbus police after a woman called 911 from the Tepe household, or I'll say reportedly from the Tepe household. The dispatcher described the call as a domestic dispute and after calling and hanging up, a short conversation ensued. Now, according to reports, it seems like the Tepes have lived in that house since 2020. So the year before they got married. Because the only sale history for the house shows that it sold on May 8, 2020 for $487,500 after being listed for $500,000 over two months earlier in late February of 2020. And there is no rental history, but in their wedding photos and video which we will post, they're standing on their front porch and in their backyard at this house. So, yeah, they definitely have lived in that house for years. But still we can't say for sure that this call was made by Monique, but it's being speculated that it was because she was the only adult female living in that house at the time on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 when this call was made. Now, the woman called police and then hung up before speaking. So they decided that they were going to call her back. The audio hasn't been released, but there is a transcript. So here's how the conversation went. And by the way, this was at 2:45am Hi, this is 911. We just got a hang up call. Is everything okay?
Daphne
Yeah, I'm sorry. I'm okay.
Te
Are you sure?
Daphne
Yeah, yeah, I'm okay. Sorry.
Te
Well, it sounds like you're crying. Do you need police, paramedics or anything?
Daphne
No, no, no, I'm okay, I promise. I'm just emotional. And then she says something unintelligible.
Te
Well, can I ask what had you call 911 in the first place?
Daphne
Because me and my man got into it. But I'm okay, I promise.
Te
Did anything ever get physical?
Daphne
And then the woman is crying and.
Te
She says, no, you guys were just arguing. Nobody hit each other.
Daphne
Mhmm.
Te
Yes, well, I have the information here. I can go ahead and tell the officers to cancel. Heading over to your address. If anything changes, call us back.
Daphne
Yes, yes, yes, I'm sorry. Okay, I'm sorry then.
Te
With that, the dispatcher at the Columbus Communications center tagged the call as a domestic dispute and later wrote that assistance was no longer needed.
Daphne
The timing is really interesting that it was at 2:45am on a Tuesday, which weirdly was about the exact same circumstances when they were murdered. But. But assuming Spencer would have worked that day as well. It just makes you wonder what this call was about. If it's even any of our damn business. But I will add that her family has listened to the call, not just the transcript, they have heard it. And Spencer's brother in law, Rob, which is Spencer's sister's husband. That's why we keep calling him both of their brother in law. Um, Rob said, quote, I 100% know that is not Monique's voice. I think it just may be pinged at their address. That's probably a neighbor. It's so obviously not Monique's voice. It's not them. He also added that Monique would never have said my man.
Te
And there are a lot of comments online that suggest that the call was made by someone else at their house, maybe during a party or possibly a babysitter. But yeah, it was a Tuesday. Neither of their birthdays were then and the closest holiday was that weekend and that would be Easter. So even those comments seem to be fake.
Daphne
Yeah, there are a lot of people commenting on different videos and forums saying, oh my God, stop spreading fake news. The, the, the family said that it was a babysitter. And it's like, I can't, we can't find one single quote where the family is saying it was a babysitter. In fact, Rob is just saying, I don't know, it was probably a neighbor.
Te
Yeah. So this totally could be misinformation. And I think that if their family says that it was not Monique, we should probably believe that.
Daphne
Absolutely.
Te
But we did want to mention it anyway since it's so widely discussed in this case. But let's go ahead and just close that piece of information because that was.
Daphne
Another headline that was really Big for the past few days. You know, people saying oh my God. And she called 911 in April. So Spencer must have been abusive and he arranged this murder. You know, people like really run with that stuff and that narrative is so dangerous to the investig. So want to clear that up?
Te
Yeah. There is no evidence that any of that happened.
Daphne
Hey guys, this is me jumping in later right before this episode comes out because the audio for this call did come out. The family still says this is not Monique, but I'm just gonna play you a small clip so you can hear it. Really. Again, this is just to clear up this call and tell you guys that if you've seen the headlines for it, if you're reading the news about it, this is not for the Tepe house. We still don't know where this call came from. We don't know why it was believed to be the Tepe residence. But here's a clip.
Heath
Yeah, I'm sorry. I'm okay. But I'm okay. I promise. Did anything ever get physical? No.
Daphne
So that clears up some suspicion that has been circulating this week. And then also just a few hours before this episode comes out, the Columbus chief of police sat down to answer some questions. This is a six minute clip. Not a whole lot is said, I'll tell you that. But it does kind of clear up some things and give us the most up to date information that they're able to share. So here is that interviewed numbers down.
Heath
You guys ended the year with probably was the most high profile case of the year. What is the latest in the double murder of the Chinese? So obviously this is a national news case. I just want to preface that by saying that we think that every single case that we have is high profile. We care about every single case that we have, which is why we don't just stop when a case, when the year ends, we don't stop investigating it. Which is why we have 30 additional cases from previous years that are solved. Our detectives work diligently to close every single case of injustice to every single family. Which is why we have 100 homicides solved last year in this case in particular. What we do know is that obviously we received a call for a well being check related to the two victims involved in this case. There was an officer that was dispatched to go to that well being check. Unfortunately, he did respond to the wrong location initially he went to the wrong location and in him believing that he was at the right location, he did everything that he was supposed to do. Knocked on the doors, check the Backyard did all those things, but it was not the right location. Approximately, about maybe 40 minutes later, we had received another call because the coworkers of one of the victims stated that they had not reported to work and they were really concerned. So they went to the house and that's when subsequently the bodies were found of the two victims. As it relates to this case, we are working very diligently to try to solve this case. We know that people are concerned and we know that people have a lot of questions. What we're asking for is patience. As it relates to this investigation, we want to make sure that we don't compromise the integrity of this investigation. So when we finally identify a suspect and it goes to trial or it goes, we want to make sure that there's nothing that could cause this case to be dismissed or causes case to be kicked. So we're looking at every single tip or every single information that comes in. We leave no stone unturned. We're investigating it, but there's only so much that we can share at this point. We released a video of the person of interest that we're looking for, the person that we know that was in the area at that time. We're asking the community, we're asking the public, if you have any information, if you think you know anything about this person, please contact us. Please call us. You can email us, you can call us, you can call Crime Stoppers. Even if you don't think it's something that's relevant in that moment, it may have been something you saw last week, it may have been something that you saw the day before. It could be relevant to this case. Please reach out, Please let us know. So we are asking for tips. We have received numerous tips as it relates to this case, but we do not have at this moment a suspect that we have identified. Do you believe that person who was in the video is the suspect or just someone who was there at the time when the murders happened? Evidence is going to give us that information as we continue to dig, as we continue to gather, as much as we can. Right now, we know that they were there. So right now what we want is for people to be able to give us more information so that we can then collect that evidence and make a determination on whether that's the case. Now, there's a crime camera just across the street from the Tepes residence. Did that crime camera catch anything that's been useful to the department? We're still reviewing a lot of video. We're still looking at a lot of Evidence. Again, the information that we're releasing, we want to be as transparent as possible and release that. But there are some things we're just not going to be able to share at this time related to the. To the investigation. But what I can tell you is that we are looking at so much video information, there's so much content that we're still combing through, so we don't have all the answers. And so our investigators are diligently working, they're still gathering information. And as soon as we're able to, we're going to provide another update. Has any vertical advice for the community at this time, though? I'll add that any homicide investigation is a delicate balance between community safety and investigative integrity. When there's a community safety issue, that's information that we got get out as soon as possible. You know, our. Our homicide teams have been canvassing the area every single day since this tragedy occurred. And they're making a lot of relationships in the Wyland park area. The community members have stepped up and they have provided a lot of information for every second of video. That's every second of video that a detective has to watch. And so when we have tens of thousands of hours of video, detectives watch every bit of that. And that's obviously not an instant, instantaneous lead. Additionally, the chief mentioned a number of tips that have come in since we released that video. And our detectives, we have a great triage system that the tips are sent to detectives. Detectives follow up on all of those tips. Some of them pan out to some additional information and follow up. Some of them are just not good tips, but we follow up on every one. Again, that speaks to the partnership with the community, that speaks to the work. So what I'm describing, the canvassing, the review of video that happens on every single homicide that our detectives investigate. If there's anything good out of this, it's that people are paying attention to the professionalism of our detectives and the significant work that they do. Do you know how many tips they've gotten? Several tips. A lot of tips in a lot of different ways. So we've gotten them emailed, social media, telephone calls, texts, in person. We've gotten a lot of tips. In regards to the protest tonight, how do you plan to handle that as the protest at 6pm we're going to do it the same way that we handle every protest. We have our dialogue team that has been phenomenal in being able to facilitate and work with these groups. We want to make sure that people are able to protest in a peaceful manner, and that their first amendment rights are not violated. So we're going to continue to work in collaboration with them, continue to have that dialogue and make sure that we're there and available to make sure that everyone's safety is. Is a priority. Has everyone been cooperative, aside from the neighbors in the TEPE investigation? I have not heard of people being uncooperative. So when you say everyone, I mean, I think there's always a possibility someone's not like, relatives, people out of states, that kind of thing. Our detectives have a great relationship with families.
Daphne
Well, right now, outside the house, a memorial of roses and sunflowers sit on the front lawn. Their family is seemingly stumped as to who could be responsible. Nobody in their family has said, we think we know who it is. There was a weird patient or anything like that. Actually, Spencer's cousin Audrey said, quote, it could be anyone. Detective Weiner and Detective Miller of the Columbus police are on this case, and they are telling the public that no tip is insignificant. So. So please, if you have any information about the murders of Monique and Spencer Tepe, please call the Columbus police homicide unit at 614-645-4720. Thank you so much, everybody, for listening. Listening to this episode of Going west.
Te
Yes, thank you guys for listening to this tragic episode. I really hope that more information comes out soon. I hope that this person is caught. So please make sure that you share this episode. Make sure that you share the videos. Just make sure that you share the story in general.
Daphne
Yeah, we're gonna make like a little wanted poster with information on this case that you guys can share it, especially if you're in Ohio or Columbus. I'm sure it could really help if the right person catches wind, which is why it's so great that this story is being you know, publicized as much as it is. So many news stations are picking it up. That's why we wanted to cover it. Again, our hearts really go out to their family for everything they're enduring right now, between the rumors and just the loss. The sudden, sudden loss of the.
Te
These two wonderful people, and also just the lack of justice here.
Daphne
