Hello, everybody. Hope you're doing well. Today we have a case that is one of many that we cover on Going west that reminds us that just because it's deleted and doesn't mean it's gone.

In June of 2021, a 42 year old father running a successful farm in Iowa was found dead inside his home in what initially appeared to be a break in gone wrong. But when investigators began poking around and asking questions, disturbing clues emerged in the form of Snapchat mess images and texts painting a horrifically detailed picture. This is the murder of Ryan Cooper. Ryan Roy Cooper was born on June 1, 1979 in Waterloo, Iowa to parents Connie and Jan and grew up alongside siblings Aaron and Michelle. But a year before he was born, tragedy struck the family when they lost Ryan's 5 year old brother Matthew from complications of heart surgery. So, you know, I just think that's always important to mention when a family has been through a hardship, knowing another hardship that we're going to be talking about today because this is not their first. Well, from a young age, Ryan was described as polite and reserved and he really valued hard work and was really proud of the dedication that he had to his family's legacy of farming. Thus, after his parents retired, it was his honor to, to keep it going alongside his siblings. I will say, though, like, his parents were still around to help. You know, this is still the family biz.

It's still the family biz, but he's just kind of, you know, he's taking a little bit more on with the. The family farm.

Daphne
Exactly. So he graduated from North Tama County Community high school in 1998 and then devoted his career to upkeep on the family cattle farm, as well as driving a semi truck when necessary, you know, just for extra money if things were kind of slow at the farm. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time outdoors in all seasons. Like in the summers, he loved taking boats and jet skis out on the lake nearby. And in the winters, he brought out his snowmobile. Now, Ryan's first marriage brought him a son named Cole, but when that ended in divorce, he struck up a romance with a local hairstylist named Karina Alpers, who was a couple years older than him. Now, Ryan, of course, was a little bit subdued at the time due to his previous split, but was instantly taken with Karina's bold and outgoing nature. You know, she was bubbly and very popular in their small community. So In September of 2009, when Ryan was 30 and Karina was 31, they married after almost three years together. This union brought three more children to the family, sons Cade and Cable and a daughter named Courtland.

They really, really love the scene.

Yeah, really into that.

Exactly. So they settled on a home on the Cooper family farm. That's probably why they love the seas. Yeah. And the property was five miles or three kilometers west of Treyer, Iowa and only about a mile or 1.6 km away from his brother Aaron, who also lived with his wife and kids on the property. So really, really close to family, which was super nice. So especially because his brother has kids. So the kids can kind of like grow up together on the farm properties.

They all kind of live within the same general area on the property.

Daphne
And I will say as well, like, Ryan and Karina really bonded over their shared love of adventure and they both enjoy taking Ryan's motorcycle out for rides. So like, everything seemed really good. Close to family. The kids are close. Karina is the kind of gal that Ryan needs. They're having this fun, adventurous rural life together and. And they also had a very tight knit friend group. Actually the women refer to themselves as the Tama County Housewives. So, you know, they're kind of having a little fun with it. But their friends noticed that Karina had a bit of a drinking problem and would occasionally even grow agitated and belligerent when the group was out together, which was behavior that was usually directed toward Ryan, which, yeah, it's not good, not a good look in general. And. But of course then it made it so that the friends kind of knew that they had a lot of issues and that she was kind of at the root of those problems because she was very aggressive towards him. Like sometimes she even picked fights with him for fun. Like she just, she liked making fun of him. She was quite cruel to him, like a bully to him. And she was known for having a temper and a strong will to fight. So in the weeks preceding Ryan's death, his friends noticed that he had kind of lost a bit of his usual zest for life. And when they gathered in northern Wisconsin for an annual hunting trip, his friends noted that he was uncharacteristically quiet, aloof and withdrawn, like something was clearly bothering him.

Well, on the Evening of Thursday, June 17, 2021, the two had been married for 12 years at that point, and. And 43 year old Karina and the children had pizza for dinner at home and then they went to bed as usual. Newly 42 year old Ryan, however, fell asleep on the recliner in the living room, which is something that he did frequently after a really long day of work. While their two youngest children often slept in bed. With her, their oldest son, Cade, would usually fall asleep on the couch next to his dad. But that evening, Karina had insisted that he sleep in his own bed to get enough rest.

Pretty interesting.

Heath
So Karina claimed that she was asleep by 10pm that night, and around 3am she awoke to use the bathroom and said that she heard Ryan snoring in the recliner. But when the sound of a crash jolted her out of sleep about an hour and a half later, she went downstairs to investigate, and she saw blood beneath her husband's chair. So, panicking, she claimed that she assumed that there was an intruder in the house, and she bolted back upstairs to lock herself in her bedroom with her kids. At 4.30am, Ryan's brother Aaron received a very frantic call from Karina in hysterics, claiming that there was somebody in the house. She later explained that she called Aaron before calling the police because he obviously lived close by and he worked as a first responder, so she knew that he would be helpful in this situation.

Right. I mean, a good guy to have on speed dial.
- [09:13]
Heath
Exactly. Yeah. So as Aaron raced to the scene armed with his gun, he called 911, and Karina also summoned the police from inside her home. When Aaron arrived, gun in hand, Ryan's three youngest children ran out to the front of the home with the two boys having picked up some of their dad's blood while passing through this crime scene.

So traumatic.

Heath
Yeah. Then, strangely, their dog, whose name was actually Ransom, was present in the main bedroom through the entire ordeal, but apparently had slept through this alleged intruder. Aaron went inside the home to find Karina shrieking, and he told the operator, my brother's dead, followed by quote, we need an ambulance now. And I want to play this clip for you guys so that you can see exactly how this whole thing went down. So this is the clip of Aaron talking with the dispatcher.

Daphne
I mean, really, that entire call, you guys are only hearing mostly Karina shrieking, And Aaron is so calm on this call, like, it's. It's really disturbing.

Heath
It's very disturbing and very interesting given what we're gonna get into here.

Daphne
Totally.
- [11:02]
Heath
So when police arrived at the scene, Ryan was still in his recliner with Karina perched on top of him as blood pooled on the floor beneath the chair, coming out of his ears as well as his mouth. Ma', am, what happened?

Daphne
I don't know. I don't know.
- [11:23]
Heath
Officers noted the strange scene of Karina practically smothering him with her own body and coating herself in his blood while screaming at the top of her lungs,

Daphne
which is such a weird scene. Perched on top of his body in
- [11:38]
Heath
the recliner, just like draped over Ryan
- [11:42]
Daphne
and he's covered in blood. There's blood all over the floor. Like this is really weird.

Heath
Yeah, it's a really, really like messy and scattered and hysterical scene. Now, the officers asked Karina what had happened, but. But she screamed. I don't know, not giving up any story, just kind of seemingly completely inconsolable

Daphne
at this point, as you guys can tell from that call, she's just wailing and wailing.
- [12:05]
Heath
Well, she was then ushered outside to the deck, but continued to scream at the top of her lungs, barely coherent enough to answer their questions. Between choking for air and gasping out sobs. She was able to tell them that there was no fucking way that he had done this to himself, as the initial observation was that it may have been a suicide. When she was asked to take the officers through the sequence of events, she claimed that she heard a noise in the living room and that she thought that somebody had fallen down, but that she then realized there must have been somebody inside the house. And then after calling her brother in law, Aaron for help, she realized that her husband was dead. Now, she claimed that she had tried to gain access to her gun safe, but that she was so distraught that she couldn't get it open, you know, to protect herself and her kids from whoever had possibly done this.

So she's kind of saying, well, I was going to go after them and get my gun, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Heath
Couldn't open that gun safe. Well, first responders wondered if 42 year old Ryan had suffered a spontaneous medical emergency that claimed his life swiftly and suddenly. But soon after paramedics arrived on the scene, they discovered bullet holes and confirmed that a gunshot wound had been his cause of death. At first glance, his injuries appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the head. But when the body was moved to the floor, a second gunshot wound was discovered and the gun was of course nowhere to be found, leaving the only possibility to be a murder. His wife Karina was brought into the police station for questioning within hours of this discovery. And she explained to the officers that she was asleep in bed when she heard what sounded like a crash in the kitchen. So wondering if it was one of the kids maybe knocking something over, she waited but heard nothing and the children remained asleep.

She then headed into the kitchen to investigate the noise and spotted Ryan seemingly still asleep in his chair, you know, in his recliner. But when she Turned on the light. That's when she saw the blood. She went over to check on him and saw blood everywhere. And then their oldest son, Kade, heard her scream and ran downstairs. But of course, she worried that there was probably somebody else in the house because she's saying she doesn't know who did this. So she took the kids upstairs and told them to go into a room and lock the door before she went back downstairs to call for help and try to revive her husband through tears. She described jumping on top of him while he was still in his recliner in hopes of shaking him awake. That's how she explained why she was, like you said, he perched atop him.

Yeah. Or like, draped over his body. She's. She's.

Daphne
I'm trying to shake him awake, thinking

Heath
that possibly she can wake him. But at that point, it was. It was already too late.

Daphne
But it's also weird because that would have been after Aaron arrived as well, because the police are. Are watching her do this. So it's like it would have been some time after finding him, you know, and again, a really disturbing scene of her on top of him, wailing and sobbing. Well, when asked who may have had the motivation to do such a thing, she couldn't come up with a single name. This is somebody who really didn't have any. En then she was faced with the question of whether they had any ongoing issues in their marriage, because, of course, they.

Heath
They need to know kind of what the dynamic was between Karina and Ryan.
- [15:42]
Daphne
Yeah. Because, like, did you do this?
- [15:44]
Heath
Yeah.
- [15:45]
Daphne
So Karina said candidly that they had gone through a rough patch when Ryan's mom, Connie, passed away a year prior, because, of course, they had to navigate that grief on top of dealing with the, you know, running the family farm without her, because, of course, she had retired by them, but she was still a part of operations, like we said earlier. So she said it was a really, really hard time for them to kind of reorganize life without Connie, and that because of that, their marriage was a little rocky. But Karina assured the officers that she and Ryan were working through their conflicts and that there were no unsolvable problems between the two, nor had they ever even been close to filing for divorce. When asked. She also maintained that neither of them were having affairs or would have an affair because things were good and they were faithful. Now, the scene of the crime was, of course, meticulously combed for fingerprints and DNA. And just outside the home, on the porch gate, was a partial bloody shoe print. And interestingly, in the driveway. Karina's small, white Michael Kors purse was found discarded. So, obviously, it seemed like somebody had, like, killed Ryan and then taken her purse and run from the scene and then, for whatever reason, tossed the bag out of a moving vehicle.

Heath
Yeah, this was some sort of, like, robbery gone wrong. Exactly.
- [17:11]
Daphne
That is what it looked like. However, detectives also found cash left on the kitchen counter. And that obviously would have been left untouched because it was just sitting there, which was, you know, kind of like an inconsistency to this theory that there had been a burglar in the house. Because, hey, there's cash right there. Why don't you grab it? Maybe they didn't see it, sure. But they're. They're noticing this. Then on the floor of the living room was a shell casing from a.22 caliber shotgun. Now, as the investigation mounted at the family farm, Karina and their three kids moved in with her brother, awaiting news about the developments in the case. And Karina claimed to be living in fear, worrying that whomever had committed this sudden and heinous crime would be coming back for her. Weeks turned to months, and the investigation stalled as tips stopped coming in. So Karina moved herself and her kids into another home on the Cooper family farm property, living off of her earnings as a hairstylist, as well as pocketing the $515,000 that she earned from Ryan's life insurance payout.

Heath
Yep. So she's living off of that insurance money. So detectives were pursuing two possible leads, both of whom were acquaintances who may have had beef with Ryan. The first was a former business associate named Nolan De Wall. Now, Nolan was working for the farm when Ryan and his siblings began noticing money getting shuffled from account to account and sometimes even going missing under Nolan's watch. Not a good look. Not a good look for Nolan. So he was actually fired for this as well.

Understandably so.

Heath
Well, after the murder, he was interviewed and maintained that he had no involvement. Like he wasn't harboring bad blood from his termination. But he did own a.22 caliber gun, which he allegedly kept at his brother in law's house. So the gun was removed and it was tested, and it was found not to be a match for the shell casing that was found at the scene. He also was able to offer up an ironclad alibi for the time of the murder. Thus, Nolan was eliminated from suspicion. Now, another tip came in about a man named Ronald Behnken, who Ryan allegedly got into some sort of altercation with at a bar just a few nights before he was murdered, though, nobody knew quite what this altercation had been about. There were multiple people who could attest that the pair had this disagreement, but it was apparently far less dramatic than it was reported to be. You know, like, it wasn't really that big of a deal and was really like more of a discussion, per the security footage from inside the bar that night.

Seemed like a good lead. They're like, oh, I got in a bar fight. And it's like, no, it's like, no,

Heath
it was more just a discussion or maybe just a.
- [19:58]
Daphne
A heated debate.
- [19:59]
Heath
Yeah, disagreement. So of course they had these two leads, but they quickly turned into two dead ends that brought investigators right back to square one. And the case just continued to stall until detectives dove deeper into Ryan's wife Karina's social media activity leading up to the murder. Now, this led to multiple developments in the murder investigation, as well as the emergence of Another suspect, a 23 year old man named Houston Danker. What a name.

So Houston was described as a smooth talking ladies man. Hate that. And he particularly enjoyed flirting with women who were older than he was.

Heath
I gotta say, you know, he was 23, but when you look at photos of him, bro, looks like 45.

Daphne

Heath
That's a, that's a tough 23.
- [20:55]
Daphne
So he began sleeping with his best friend's mom, leading to the demise of her marriage. And then at just 23 years old, he set his sights on 43 year old Karina. So he was like, dankin's a ruined a marriage. He's a homewrecker ready to ruin another marriage. Yeah, yeah. So Karina actually began cutting the hair of this young single father, Houston Danker, in December of 2020, and the two hit it off and became friends. We'll say friends with some quotations around now.

Yeah.

She said that they bonded over the custody issues that he was facing with his ex and that even though she can't relate and that she was somewhat of a big sister figure to him, she was kind of doling out advice and trying to be the sounding board for him. So, you know, not necessarily that she can relate to what he's going through, but more so like, oh, I'm cutting your hair and I'm giving you advice and we're getting along and.

Which is like, you know, it's typical to like, talk about your personal life with a hairstylist.

Daphne
Absolutely.
- [21:57]
Heath
But she's, she's really starting to cross the boundaries of professionalism.
- [22:01]
Daphne
Yeah. Because it grew beyond this. It wasn't just like, yeah, oh, I'm so sorry you're going through that. Snip, snip. Because it grew into texting and Snapchatting, which then evolved into flirting and sexting, culminating in a physical relationship in February of 2021, which she said was the last time that she ever cut his hair. This was only four months before Ryan was murdered. Now, according to Karina, she then asked him to stop coming into the salon, admitting that she feared losing her husband if he discovered the affair. So she's saying, yes, we had an affair. But then I said, you can't come here anymore and we have to cut ties because I'm a married woman.

Heath
Yeah. And it feels like she's already just trying to get ahead of the controversy, you know, get ahead of the messages. Like, oh, yeah, there we were kind of, we were doing a little bit wrong here, but I told him, hey, I'm cutting this off, but doing it.

Daphne
She also, like, didn't actually do that. She didn't do that because she and. Or sorry, she and Houston were not like, neither of them were being honest with investigators about the nature of their relationship. So when Karina was asked about her relationship with Houston directly, you know, after they found the text and the Snapchats, she denied that anything physical had taken place between them, shutting this down as mere speculation, saying that Houston once sent her a Snapchat by mistake and that Ryan happened to see it. And they're like, we know that's false, girl. We have the receipts.

Yeah.

Like, she called any speculation about their relationship, quote, ridiculous. 23 year old Houston was also questioned early on in the investigation as someone who knew Karina well. But both of them denied any sort of sexual or romantic relationship. But of course, their deleted conversation said otherwise because again, deleted but not gone. Deleted doesn't mean gone. They're there, people. Why does everybody forget this? Thank God they do. Well, on December 13, 2020, by the way, shortly after she started cutting his hair, Karina complained to Houston that she hated her husband Ryan, and also divulged that she had been having fantasies about traveling with Houston. Imagine, like you have a female hairdresser. Like, imagine if she, when she first started cutting her hair, she was like, by the way, I hate my husband and I'm really like dreaming about running away with you.

Just wild, just absolutely wild.

Wild. Especially because he's kind of this younger man and maybe he's already told her that he likes older women. Like, you can only imagine. It's very strange. Well, they even exchanged I love yous quite quickly. So so this gave way to a physical and virtual affair that lasted months and culminated in Ryan's murder. You really playing it up, girl. And as the months passed, mounting to almost two years since the murder, Ryan's family began to have their doubts about Karina's innocence as well, Wondering how she could have moved on so quickly and noticing that she didn't seem invested in the outcome of the investigation. In May of 2023, Aaron Cooper requested that Karina speak with the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations, who was assisting the small Tama County Sheriff's office for the first time almost since the crime took place. And Karina reluctantly agreed. She's like, I don't really want to, but I guess. Special agent Ryan Herman with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation asked her if she had seen any injuries on Ryan that night. But she responded that she had not and that she hadn't known where the blood was coming from. However, she could be heard telling the 911 operator that Ryan had been shot. So she's like, well, I didn't see any injuries on him, but.

But somehow she knew. Not only that, yeah, she. She knew the wound and what it had come from, which is exactly what we talked about in the Ashley Flynn case. That we covered a few months ago, which, by the way, if you have not listened to our episode on Ashley

So phony. That's exactly what we said in the episode, that it's the phoniest 911 call we have ever played on the show. Her American Idol contestant husband called 911 and said that his wife had been shot. And you. And I asked, how the hell do you know the house is pitch black. He didn't inspect her body. There was blood everywhere, just like this. You would have no idea where or what the. The weapon was unless you heard it.

Which you're claiming that you didn't. You know, she's saying she heard a noise. She didn't say she heard a gunshot.

Right, Right. She said that there was a loud bang. Yeah. Or like a. A crashing sound is. I think.

Yes. A crashing sound is not a gunshot.

Right. Well, Special Agent Ryan Herman also noted that she had been crying, but that she was unable to produce any tears. Crocodile. It's so classic. You know what I mean? Crocodile tears. Well, as the questions continued, Karina grew impatient and cut off the interview, telling them that she was running out of time. On the body cam footage from the interrogating officer, Special Agent Ryan Herman with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, can be heard saying, so, Karina, I mean, at this point, the case facts show us that nobody did come into the house that night. Karina then snapped back, saying, somebody did. Somebody obviously came in here. My husband's dead. Well, when the agent challenged her on this, saying that they both knew what had transpired, Karina said scathingly, you're leaving my property now. Somebody came into my house and killed my husband. Go figure out who killed my husband. And then he answered calmly, we did. We did.

Oh, I just got the chills.

I know. Clap back on her. So Karina flew into hysterics and ran out of the house, continuing to demand that the special agent leave her property. She then claimed that he would need to divert. Any more questions to her lawyer. She's saying, and don't talk to me anymore. You gotta talk to him. The agent tried one more time, telling her, I just want to talk to you because you're the one who knows what happened to Ryan that night. Then Karina shouted back, no, I don't. If I knew what happened to my husband, I'd be in jail because the fucker would be dead.

Houston's phone data was subpoenaed, and what they found was shocking. A treasure trove of information pointing to the guilt of him and Karina. Tips had also been trickling in connecting Houston to Karina as it was. But when he was questioned, Houston assured investigators that he was more of a gay best friend to Karina than a romantic prospect.

I don't even like girls.

Daphne
He's like that. Like, she even offered to watch his kids in the midst of his split with their mom. So they're both saying, oh my God, we're just like really good friends and that's it. We're not sexting.

But the data isn't, you know, it's not corroborating, it's not lying.

When asked his whereabouts at the time of the murder, he claimed that he was home and in bed. And he was actually eliminated as a suspect based on the lack of evidence and the fact that he seemed to be at home sleeping at the time, per his phone data. Because like you said, Heath, the, the special agency said that they, they didn't have any proof that somebody had gone into the home that night, which is why they're really looking at Karina. So they don't have evidence that Houston was there.

Right. And they're just trying to track his phone data because they're trying to see if maybe he was in the vicinity of the house that night or whatever. But it appeared that he or just his phone had been at his own

Daphne
home, which it doesn't mean that he was at his home. But they can't prove where he was because they don't have his gps. Well, even Karina and Ryan's friends didn't believe that anything had conspired between them, Though they did acknowledge that the so called friendship was odd and had likely developed more than either of them were willing to admit, actually. Later, when asked, Karina's friends recalled a time when they were all together and Houston showed up to see Karina. So on a hunch, a few of the women actually searched his phone. Wild, I know. And found. I wonder how they were even able to do that. And found messages between the two of them flirting and expressing their love for each other. So.

So they grabbed Houston's phone, typed in his password. Password 1234 probably. And then we're like, wait, what? They're like, they're like sexting each other.

Daphne
But still, I think the point for them was like, yes, like, it seems like it did go there, but there's no way that Houston and Karina murdered Ryan. Like, that was kind of. Even though they also knew that she was really aggressive, I think, to anybody or to most people, they don't think that somebody that they're close with is capable of something like that.

So they're kind of saying, you know, we, we don't see that being the case, but like, yeah, they probably were having an affair at the very least. But in their text messages as well, they were even making plans for their shared future, including talking about having children, each saying that by that time next year, they might have another child between the two of them. Police also, this is really crazy, uncovered that she told Houston that she thought of Ryan as merely a sperm donor and even that she hoped he was in an accident, writing quote, here's hoping for a rogue semi today. Big accident, no survivors.

Accident, no survivors. That's crazy. Well, with the forensic evidence stacked against them, as well as the fact that the dogged detective work had ruled out the possibility of a break in, the prosecution finally felt that they had enough to pursue charges against Karina. On February 16, 2024, detectives from the Tama County Sheriff's Office and agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation pulled up to Karina's residence with her children inside. And she came out to the front to greet them, feigning gratitude and curiosity. And she asked them, do you have any news about Ryan? Like you care. Shut up. Well, instead, she was informed that she was being arrested, to which she responded with apparent outrage, saying, what? And then asking, quote, why am I under arrest? She breathlessly told them that her children were inside and that she was worried about their well being. And then she broke into the melodramatic high pitched sobs that the officers hadn't heard since the day her husband died, saying, what's happening here? What's happening? I don't understand what's happening?

What?

This is insane. My kids are gonna be so scared. How is this happening, you guys? This is insane. Sorry, I just wanted to, like, make it very melodramatic for you guys because it seems like that's her whole thing. It's, it's. Whenever she gets confronted by officers, she really likes to play it Up. But she never, like. She never was, like, calling them, asking about Ryan's investigation.

Daphne
Yeah, she's just acting very upset and highly emotional around them because she thinks that that's going to equate to her caring, but it doesn't. It just kind of makes her look bad.
- [40:25]
Heath
Yeah, it really does, because they can see right through it. Well, it wouldn't take long before Houston's arrest would follow, because on April 29, 2024, Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation agents met with Houston in the parking lot of a Menards store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Now, he did admit that Ryan had known about the affair and had even confronted Houston about it before his death. But he obviously downplayed the affair, claiming that it had been casual and that he and Korina had never planned on moving in together or, you know, merging their lives in any formal way. Well, using a very awesome interrogation tactic, the agents confronted Houston with the development that Karina was cooperating with agents and that she had turned on him and was selling him out with their shared murder plot. And despite the fact that this was not actually true, of course the tactic worked, and Houston broke down and began admitting the truth to the agents.

Yep. Set him up. Knock him down. Well, he told him that this was Korrina's idea and that he had helped in some capacity, but that he was forced into it by Korrina. He said that initially he agreed to be the shooter, but when he got cold feet, she apparently called him a fucking pussy. So he helped in the capacity in which he was comfortable loaning her the murder weapon, that.22 caliber gun, which was, of course, licensed to him.

Houston claimed that he then went to the home on the night of the murder to pick up the gun from the driveway where Karina had discarded it. He maintained that he had no part in the actual crime and that the footprint found to belong to him was only there because he. He returned to retrieve the gun before the police were summoned. So he's saying, well, I went into the house to get the gun, which, weirdly, almost worked as, like, a. An accidental deflection. Because at first we're like, oh, it looks like somebody did come in and shoot him. And they left, and there's the purse. But that was an accident. That that footprint was not on purpose. Yeah, he swore that he had been home at the time of the murder, though, like many killers do, because he left his phone behind when he was picking up the gun, and so as not to trigger suspicion.

Yeah, this is what we were talking about earlier, about how, you know, the fact that investigators were like, well, he was home at the time because his phone was. But he had simply just left his phone at home in order to not be tracked.

However, the shoe print, which was a vans brand sneaker in Houston size, was found exiting the home, which didn't align with his story that he supposedly only swung by to retrieve the gun from the driveway.

Yeah, it's showing that he walked away from the home.
- [43:14]
Daphne
The shoes believed to have made the print were later found in his home and tested, but three years had passed by then. So the test for blood came up as negative. Well, predictably, after their arrests, both members of the couple tried to pawn the murder off on the other. Like Karina claimed that Houston had committed the murder on his own, whereas Houston alleged that he had been duped and deceived by his body. Blind devotion for Karina.

Yep. Now they're turning on each other.

Daphne
Karina swore that she had no idea that Houston would go to such lengths to win her over, which is what she alleged had happened. She's saying, oh, my God, he really wanted to be with me, and he murdered for me. She maintained that she was so scared of him that she kept her suspicions about Houston being the shooter a secret.

That's why, you know, when he said, I don't know if I really want to commit this crime, she's like, you're a right.

Daphne
She also alleged that Houston would brag about his connections to the criminal underworld and that his dad had friends with ties to organized crime. So she was scared of what he would do if she crossed him.

She claimed that in September of 2020, one months after the murder, he began to threaten her on Snapchat, that he was constantly tracking her location and keeping an eye on her. He told her that he knew she would screw anything that moved, and also once told her what she was wearing when she was out working with the cows so that she could be sure she was being followed.

But obviously, there's no way to corroborate that.

Daphne
Like, we don't have those messages?

Heath
No, we don't at all.
- [44:57]
Daphne
But we have all the other messages.
- [44:59]

Well, Karina Cooper's trial began on July 2, 2025, almost exactly four years after the murder. Friends testified about Karina's explosive temper and the fights between the Coopers, including one in which she actually publicly threatened to shoot Ryan in the face.

Daphne
That's crazy work. Like saying that at all, but saying it around friends in public. Well, yeah, that's true, but to. To say that in public is horrible.
- [45:29]
Heath
Yeah, no, terrifying. God, just horrible. But when she testified in her own defense, she pleaded with the courtroom to believe her, alleging that she had been afraid for her life and the lives of her children, which is why she declined to tell police about the involvement of Houston Danker in the death of her husband. On the evening of the murder, Houston texted her, quote, remember those casings? No ifs, ands, or buts.

Come on.

Heath
To which Karina responded, Absolutely, 100%. At 3:32am he texted her, quote, okay, babe, seriously, putting the phone down. Have to get this shit done. I love you. And then Karina responded simply with, go. So when questioned about these later, she claimed that the other two messages were not recovered after being deleted and that they actually read, go to sleep.

That's kind of smart. And she's like, actually, I said go to sleep. But the other two must have just disappeared into the ether.

Heath
You didn't get the last half of that.

Daphne
Like, please.
- [46:32]
Heath
But the prosecutors made a very compelling case against her flimsy excuses. In a cross examination that even her lawyers admitted was very brutal. They believe that Karina leapt onto Ryan's body in the aftermath of the alleged discovery of his death to initially conceal where the bullet holes were and to obscure the evidence that may have been left behind by getting blood all over herself. Prosecutors believe that there was blood spatter on her from being nearby while the shots rang out, either from standing with Houston at the time or from firing the shots herself. So they're saying, you know, whoever shot the gun, whether it was Houston or it was Karina, the blood spatter got on Karina. So in order to, like, you know, fix the situation, she decided to just jump on his bloody body, get blood all over her so that it wouldn't seem like she was standing nearby when

that shot was fired, which, again, is so disturbing. She knows that he is deceased, and he has been for a minute, and she is just on top of him, covering herself in his blood.

Heath
Yeah, I mean, the. The scheming and the plotting here is like, next level.
- [47:41]
Daphne
The blood had also started to congeal and darken by then, demonstrating that Ryan likely was not killed at the time she called Aaron. But a while prior, Karina's phone even backed this data up, showing that she took 170 steps, which is nearly 400ft or the length of a football field, between 4:23 and 4:33am Just 10 minutes before she called for help. However, There were only 41ft between the bedroom where Karina claimed to have been sleeping and the living room where she found Ryan.

So they're like, what are you doing? You just taking a jog around the house or what?
- [48:23]
Daphne
It's as if she would have gone back and forth like 10 times. So, yeah, you know, what, what is she doing? And you know, of course she did say that she thought somebody was in the house, but then that would make her not be going back and forth because she is saying that she's locking her kids away and making sure her kids are safe so there wouldn't be a lot of foot traffic on her part because she said she couldn't even go to the gun safe because, like, she wasn't out looking for this killer.

Right.

Daphne
But the foot, the footsteps say otherwise.
- [48:52]
Heath
I think the only explanation that she could possibly come up with is that after she had gone upstairs and locked herself and her kids in her bedroom, that she was, you know, maybe pacing around the room as she was calling Aaron. But it's like, come on, there's just not really, there's really no reasoning for it.

Daphne
Well, although Houston left his phone behind at home in order to alleviate suspicion against him in the aftermath of the murder, his phone's health data shows that he was very active around 3:13am and, and then again at 4:46am which was likely before he left to commit the murder, you know, 3:13am and then again when he arrived back home. A co worker of Houston's testified that Houston gave him a rifle in the aftermath of Ryan's death, which turned out to be the murder weapon. Now, as we often see, Karina and Houston's Google searches both before and after the murder were also a clear indication on November 8th and 9th, 2020. So months earlier, before she even met Houston, Karina searched for a, quote, common type of handgun bullets and also researched which bullets should be used in various occasions. She completed nearly a hundred more searches about gun violence that month, wondering how to clean a firearm and what parts make up a gun. But Houston's search history was even more suspect. His search history had been deleted. But when forensic examiner Tiffany Lord restored the content, she found a gold mine of murder plotting. On May 11, 2021, Houston searches included looking for information about how to kill someone with sodium soldier sulfate, which is a chemical found in laundry detergent, by the way, as well as with antifreeze. And then simply quote, how to kill someone without them knowing.

And you know what I mean, he's such a. On this guy. But it gets even worse. Like the, the searches that you're about to get into are so dumb.

It's just truly unhinged.

So the month after Ryan's murder In July of 2021, the searches grew a lot more sinister. Among many others were the searches, quote, sodium sulfate. Is it deadly? The black market? Old open Snapchats be found again after being seen in the state of Iowa. Are Snapchats encrypted? What's the best gun to use to kill somebody? The best way to kill somebody with no evidence.

Hey, with no evidence. Stop searching for how to kill somebody with no evidence.

How do people get caught for shooting? How to positively get away with murder. The best way to kill somebody with no evidence. How much does it pay to dig a grave? What is received with a search warrant sent to Snapchat. Does Snapchat save every message and picture I send, even if opened? And where do murderers go to prison in Iowa.

So it's almost like, you know, that, that last search there, he's like, well, I may get caught.

If it happens, where am I gonna end up?

Yep. Where am I going? He also looked up the top defense lawyers in Iowa and the best medium security prisons in the state.

But perhaps the most damning and shocking text was the message from Karina to Houston about her children, which read, you can do anything you want with those boys. You are their daddy. Don't need mom's permission. Cable wants to get back to wrestling. He loves it. He just got his ass kicked at a tournament and is scared to compete now. Just wants to go to practice, doesn't want to lose. And you know what the sperm donor said to him after he got his ass handed to him? Not a fucking word other than it happens. Not, let's go home. I'll show you how to get out of that. Move. Just. It happens. They need you so badly. Kate is your football and baseball kid. Kid can throw a damn ball.

It's so creepy. And again, the fact that she's, she's referring to Ryan as sperm donor, which is not only just so weird, but just really disrespectful. Knowing that she's sending this text message, knowing that this is only going to come true if Ryan is dead.

She's so, like, brash too. I just want to say she's so brash, like, talking about her son, like losing a match in wrestling. And she's like, he just got his ass handed to him. It's like, damn, chill.

Well, when confronted with these disturbing texts and Snapchats, and Karina waved them off as simply a misunderstanding about her sick sense of humor, in her testimony, she admitted, quote, I can have a sharp tongue sometimes. I can say nasty things sometimes. Yeah, we know. But the prosecution forced her to read some of these texts aloud, including the explicit ones, one of which read, good morning, baby. You would have woken up to your horny wife's hand wrapped around your cock this morning. So gross.

She had to read that in court?

Yeah, she had to read it in court. What a loser. Well, on July 11, 2025, Karina was found guilty of first degree murder, which automatically carries a sentence of life in prison in the state of Iowa. Houston was supposed to be headed to trial next with a court date of August 12, 2025. But shortly before his trial was slated to begin, he decided to plead guilty to aiding and abetting Karina in the murder of her husband. However, he and his attorney maintained that he was blinded both emotionally, spiritually, and morally. It led him to aid and abet Karina Cooper in the murder of her husband, Michelle Wilson, and this is Ryan's sister, argued in her victim impact statement. Not only did these psychopaths have a demented, vile, and evil mind, but they both contributed to the planning and execution of my brother's murder. At no point did either of the two accomplices consider their plan to be unconscionable, immoral, unprincipled, or evil. No, their plan was just an item on their checklist, just an agenda on their way to building a dream life together. A sick, disgusting plan to achieve their dreams. But what about my brother's dreams? Both Karina and Houston are currently serving life sentences. Karina in Mitchellville, which is a small community in central Iowa, and Houston in Oakdale, which is outside of Cedar Rapids. Ryan's estate is pursuing the repayment of the $515,000 that Karina received as a life insurance payout.

She even told the police that they weren't seeking it, they weren't, you know, religious and there was nothing in the way of that. Just get a divorce. But it seemed like she wanted the best of all worlds, probably the life insurance payout and then to have the kids and to have Houston and probably to have her house. Like she didn't want to lose anything. Even though, like, it's just so disappointing.

It's always just selfishness and greed, you know, like the kind of the triple whammy here was the life insurance payout, the fact that you wouldn't have to go through a custody battle and the fact that your husband is no longer in the picture.
