B (0:56)
We have one that deals with second Peter, the extent of the Atari. So Bob, why don't you tell us who wrote it or who sent in the question and read the question for us.
C (1:08)
All right, so the question is from Joshua and he says, hello, and then says, I was reading through second Peter and noticed these opening verses in chapter two one through three. So Ken, would you read those first three verses and then I'll read his question.
B (1:29)
Okay. Peter writes, but there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you who will secretly bring in destructive heresies. And here's the important phrase, even denying the Lord who bought them and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive waves, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed by covetousness. They will exploit you with deceptive words for a long time. Their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.
C (2:14)
Okay, very good. And here's what Joshua asks. Looking at verses one and two, it sounds like those who deny the Lord who bought them or are referring to believers who have gotten caught up in bad doctrine and teach other believers the same bad doctrine. The confusing part is in verse three where it says, for a long time their judgment has not been idle and their destruction does not slumber. And he goes on to say, I know scripture can't contradict scripture. And whatever this verse is saying, it doesn't contradict John 3:16 or John 6:47 or John 11:25 and 26. So he says, my question is, how do I understand this passage? Is it that it's a believer who teaches bad doctrine and are at risk of premature death?
B (3:12)
Well, I think we need to make clear that whoever Peter is talking about here, whether these false teachers are believers or unbelievers we need to make it absolutely clear that believers can become false teachers.
