Greg Manus
Feels good, dude, it feels so good. There's so much, so much to discuss in a preseason game, man. It's been so exciting watching Ugo do his thing, watching Scal and Drew try and figure out how to pronounce that name. So many other things that that were going on in this one, man. I'm excited to talk to you about it. We have 214 left in this game. Mari Williams just shot a free throw and now we are wrapping up this one with Celtics. Looks like they're going to win first preseason game in the post. Post championship error.
Will
Yeah. So let's get right to it. So Celtics tonight, no Simons, no Pritchard, no K. So three of the guys that we've talked about all season that are likely going to be part of the the basically cemented top six or seven that we feel for this team. So none of them tonight. So, Greg, I just want to start here. What's the number? When you think about this game right now, which is just about to wrap up, what's the first thing that jumps to your mind from, from watching this new version of this team? What jumped out to you, Ugo?
Greg Manus
Ugo was super impressive in this one, man.
Will
Love it.
Greg Manus
He had three blocks. One of those blocks was a really impressive chase down block and on a fast break, one steal. I feel like he's already done more in one game than Jordan Walsh has done in two years. Right.
Will
Like, I have way more hope in Hugo Gonzalez than I do Jordan Walsh already. You're 100% right about that.
Greg Manus
Absolutely. No, it's not that Jordan Walsh played poorly tonight or anything like that. It's Hugo just popped off the screen, man. And Derrick White, who we'll get to here in a little bit, he was the main point guard in this one. As you said, Pritchard and Simons didn't play and Jalen didn't really do much in terms of playmaking for others in this one. So it was mostly Derrick White. And when Derrick White went to the bench. It was like, oh, who's gonna play point guard? And Joe went right to Hugo, right? Nugo played point guard for majority of the third quarter. And I thought he did a really good job. He didn't have any, like, careless turnovers or rookie mistake turnovers. Aside from one, I think pick and pop situation that got deflected. But that can happen to anyone, right? And I thought he. His seasoning that you already see, having played pro for so many years really showed itself in this one. I was just really impressed with him. His energy, his instincts on the court. He even hit somebody with a sham. God at one point. I don't know if you caught that, but he was just out there saucing it up.
Will
I mean, Ugo's been in, you know, as. As Drew Carter talked about, he's been in the Real Madrid program since he's nine years old. Like, I thought. I thought Drew made a really good point about how it's like the Real Madrid program is essentially, you think of some of those bigger prep high schools out here in. In the US it's that. But like Real Madrid with Cristiano Ronaldo and like all of these other soccer players that have come through. Other basketball players also thought it was fascinating that only him and Santi Aldama are the only players from Spain in the NBA right now.
Greg Manus
It's pretty fascinating.
Will
But Hugo had a great night, man. I. I really think looking at him, this is something I'll talk about more as I. As how I viewed this team on this particular night. There's a lot of things I like about different guys. I wish I could combine a few of these things with some of these guys so they'd be a little bit more.
Greg Manus
Well, like, imagine if. Imagine if Ugo had Josh Minet size, right?
Will
And if either of them could shoot like Chris Boucher or even, you know, or some, you know, somewhere along.
Greg Manus
Josh Meinek cannot shoot.
Will
So that was. So. That's. So this is the thing. So. So Hugo Gonzalez, I think you're absolutely right. Defensively, I was like, I think Ugo. I mean, I'll. Granted the Grizzlies are playing without like five or six of their main rotation guys, but Hugo Gonzalez defensively, I think, just automatically stood out as like, yeah, this guy is going to be active. I don't know what exactly his role is going to be yet, but he's going to be active and he's going to get his hands there. He's gonna get in the mix, right? He' going to get those big ass hands in the mix. He's going to get them, you know, into the passing lanes. He's going to be blocking shots, which is something I hadn't necessarily thought of yet. Like with his hands, I was like, oh, he's definitely going to get, you know, some deflections. But seeing specifically that block shot that you mentioned on the break, I was like, damn, I didn't, I didn't see that coming. Mr. Mr. Gonzalez, I was not familiar with your game quite yet, so I think he has to be the number one thing that stood out and I think, you know, and we'll talk about, you know, the Jalen, Derrick White, I think that those are important for us to get to, to talk about them as well. But I think that bench unit of Ugo, Minot and Garza, like that was really kind of what stood out to me. Again, they all have imperfections, but I think the energy that the unit had out there with the three of them was just something that I think really stood out and, and was a differentiator from the Grizzlies backups versus the Celtics backups.
Greg Manus
Yeah. When you pair them with Chris Buet as well, who I thought just like he was just a ball of energy anytime he's on the court. It's just a lot of fun watching the young guys play and watching Joe try and mix and match. I see a comment from Still Swerving in the chat. He says a lack of depth is pretty prevalent. I wonder how Joe will tweak this as the season goes. And I mean you're, you were missing three of your of your tops tonight, right? So even with that, I think you could actually make the argument that the depth was better than you would hope for in this one. Right.
Will
Being your point, like Derrick White was, that was like who's handling the ball here, right? Like where do we go? No Simons, no Pritchard and he went to Ugo. But like that's to a degree that speaks to it being. And it didn't go horribly, right? Like it was a little bit better maybe than you thought it would go, right? Yeah.
Greg Manus
And then Garza, you know, Scal called it out on the broadcast multiple times. Just like his screening ability was, was really impressive in this one. The timing of those screens, knowing how long to hold the screen, when to get out of the screen early. He doesn't have the size of Luke cornett who's all 7 foot 1 and a half, 7 foot 2. Luka Garza is more like 6 9, 6 10. So he's not the target that Luke Cornett is, but he did a lot of the same stuff. Like there was some Al Horford in his game, there's some Luke Cornett in his game. But defensively, you know, he's not, he's not going to be that guy that you need. He's not going to be the, the rebounder that you need. And that was something that was, that stood out to me. You know, not to get negative on this because we didn't have our biggest guy out there in Keda, but we are going to struggle to rebound this year. That's something we've mentioned many times already.
Will
Exactly. We know that's going to be Rob and I will say this. Garza had 10 rebounds, right? So he like that he's gonna need to be Demonta Sabonis on defense, right? Like, like I get it. You're not gonna be a rim protector. You're not gonna be locked down. Can you just gobble up rebounds?
Greg Manus
Like, can you gobble up rebounds and make anyone who's coming into the paint think that you might hurt them?
Will
Yeah, just gotta just kind of like, you know, get big, right? We talk about that when you're at like a concert or something, trying to save a spot. Can you get big? Can you get big and make them feel your presence? That's gonna be the task of Luca Garza. And I thought he, I, I thought for tonight, like what? Without having a ton of expectations, 10 points, 10 rebounds, lot of activity. Like I, I'm, I'm very happy with the night that I got from, from Luca Garza tonight. And I think Josh Minot fits into this as well. You know, obviously shooting is going to be an issue. I'm him having a shot away from being very excited about him being the wing that the Celtics have missed with the athleticism, the defense. Like this is something that you and I have talked about couple years. Like you can make up for it when you have the Jays, but you always wish you had that one more piece and it's like, hey, can we sign Tory Craig at the end of the season? Maybe that's him. It's not, you know, could there be, could Jordan Walsh be that guy? So far the answer is no. Josh Minot. I liked what I saw out of him, minus the shot. I thought he had a really nice. In the first half he went to his left, got that left handed layup to go. I was a little surprised by that move that took me by surprise. But you know, he had eight points, seven rebounds, three Assists, three steals and a block. Like, that's a super active night from him. And so that at least gave me a lot of hope. We got to see what happens with the shot. And if Joe's gonna actually play him and let him take five threes a game, when you know that's probably going in one out of five each night, like, that's going to be a little bit of a tougher ask. But I think as far as first impressions go, Luca, Josh and Ugo, they at least have to be in the A, A minus, B plus range like that as a first impression. I think they all, they all easily.
Greg Manus
Pass the test tonight. Oh yeah. Every single one of them was better than I was hoping that they would be. Right. Josh Minot was giving me Jaden McDaniel's vibes out there, right? Like where he's just like 69, super athletic out there on the wing, causing problems, getting deflections, being athletic on the break, getting offensive rebounds. He had three offensive rebounds in this one. And I thought that was something that stood out to me with, with the Celtics and you know, the uptemple style. They had 17 offensive rebounds. And I think playing with pace can translate into other aspects of the game, including hustle points and those Tommy points. Right. And I think that if everybody on the court is committed to playing full speed, 94ft for the entire game, for however long they're in there, you're going to see more deflections, you're going to see more chaos, you're going to see more offensive rebounds in, you know, in a, in a league that is going to require the Celtics, who are, you know, had a big talent bleed over the off season to make up for it with the little things. And I think all these things that these guys, Chris Boucher, Xavier Tillman, you know, even Sam Houser can, can be pretty. Can be pretty handsy and getting passing lanes. BAYL Shireman had four offensive rebounds tonight. Like, there's all these guys that can be disruptive when given the chance. It's just cool to see that with this current iteration of the Celtics in this preseason. One game, complete overreaction. But I'm excited about this season, Will. I think, I think that we're going to see some fun basketball.
Will
I mean, listen, they were pushing off of makes, right? Like, it was constant. Something I noticed early on is I think Joe knows that, you know, rebounds are going to be an issue most nights. And so almost at times, rather than cracking down with all five, it's like, let's leak out let's, let's have somebody leak out and let's try to push the tempo and get the easy bucket on the other end. Right. And so you saw a couple guys break out and you know, you mentioned the offensive rebounding, which was a pleasant surprise and something I think I'm gonna probably be tracking with this is again, Missoula ball is advantage. Basketball is just the total number of shots that they get up. So for tonight, they end up getting up 95 shots to the Grizzlies, 83 plus 12 in that category. I feel like that's going to be a very important statistic for this team because rebounding is going to be questionable because they're going to want to push the tempo. It's going to be an interesting balance to see how that all plays out. And so it's something that I just want to keep an eye on here going forward. But I enjoyed the tempo. Especially, you know, looking at the first half when you still had Jaylen Brown and, and Derrick White who played a little bit in the, in the second half. Like I, I liked what I saw. Right. Like, like you said, I think especially in some of this might have been due to the personnel that the Grizzlies had, which by the way, this game has gone final, 121 to 103. Celtics get the dub. This might have been due to partially the Grizzlies personnel where as you said, Jaylen Brown was just in full attack mode. There was not a lot of distributing from Jalen Brown happening. Yeah, yeah. Zero assists and I don't know how many. I, I don't have it here for potential assists. I, I can't imagine that number is more than two. And it was probably at the, the very end of the shot clock. But he did put up 21 points here. Got to the free throw line eight times. Six of 13, three of six from the field. And I thought he was getting great shots. I thought he was really in control. I didn't think he was out of control. He just had a very singular focus. But then that left it to Derrick White to kind of facilitate. And this is going to be a different version of Derrick White where he's going to have to shoulder a lot more of that load. And tonight, you know, he only plays 20, 26 minutes. Here sits the entire fourth back half of the third, but 16 points, 10 assists, only one turnover. That's a very encouraging sign, especially with the tempo that this team team was playing. What did you see out of, out of those, out of those starters Those main guys that we saw in the first half.
Greg Manus
Yeah. I want to start with Derrick White because I think other than Ugo, who stayed in the game longer than D. White. Right. And it's just like brand new. So he's just exciting to talk about Derek, the most impressive player on the court tonight. Right. And we've talked a lot about Pton Pritchard getting his opportunity to finally be a starting point guard in the league. We've talked about Jaylen Brown finally getting the opportunity to run more pick and roll and be the primary playmaker on the team. Forgetting that Derrick White also has never had this opportunity. Right. Like there's so many times that over the last few years we've been like, can we just put the ball in Derrick White's hands? Like, why are we messing around with anything other than Derrick White? Because he's so heady, he's so smart and he's so careful with the ball in a way that is efficient and leads to just good basketball. And you know, to your point about how many shots can they get up? It's also, you know, what is their assist to turnover ratio? How is that number going to come down when you put the ball in the hands of someone like Derrick White, who is a very low turnover player. Right. And it's just something that until I saw it tonight, I didn't really think about it as much as I probably should have over the off season. Like, if Derrick White is the primary playmaker for this team, the starting point guard for this team, what does that look like for this offense? How does that affect the shot quality that they get? And how does that affect someone like Jaylen Brown who is now getting put, you know, put in a position where he's set up by a real point guard versus being set up from a point forward like Jason Tatum, who doesn't quite know where to get people the ball in their spots, where Derrick White is going to find Jalen Brown in his spots. Kind of like when Jalen and Marcus really developed that chemistry where Marcus is able to find Jalen, you know, on the break when they did that little two man action, baseline, baseline, backdoor cut, like all those little things that I think Jalen could really benefit off of and you know, who knows because Pritchard and Simon's both didn't play. But if Derrick White ends up being the starting point guard and the Celtics lean a little bit bigger in their starting lineup like they did tonight, it's not. Not something I would hate.
Will
Yeah, I love seeing the playmaking out of Dead White. And you're right, I think that was something that probably was overlooked in the Pritchard's getting a bigger role. Simons is the new guy in town. Derrick White, we know what to expect. He's the second best player on this team. And so, you know, it was like, yeah, he'll have more responsibility, but I don't think we really gave enough thought to what that responsibility will be and what it will look like. And there's two things I think stood out to me is one, obviously, like you said, him taking on the lead, ball handling and creative responsibilities. And then number two, I just tried looking this up. I would love to bet somewhere that Derrick White might lead the league in three point attempts. Like, I feel like there's a good chance that that might happen because I think Derek is gonna do those two. I think he's gonna obviously, you know, do all the things that we're talking about here that he's gonna get a chance to do that. He hasn't really had a chance to be the lead guy doing but two of nine from three point tonight in 26 minutes, you give Derek that, that full 32, 35 minutes, whatever he's gonna end up playing per night. I think we're gonna see a lot of games with Derrick White shooting 10 plus threes. Like, I think that's fully, fully in play. So whatever that's going to come out to be, I think that's something that, that could be on the table. But yeah, I think as much as we've talked probably more about the Pritchard and Simons factor, I think Derrick White, like, little forgotten, not entirely, obviously, but I think tonight him coming out and having a double double right off the jump was a little bit of a reminder. Like, like, hey, guys, yes, playmaking is not the same without Jason Tatum, but I'm gonna take on a lot of that load. And actually this is something I was thinking about when you were talking Greg about setting Jalen Brown up and like how Tatum, it's not quite the same. And part of that is Tatum's number one option is I can score better than like everyone, but like five people in the world, six people in the world, whatever it might be. So that's always gonna be option one is like, is there an option for me to score? Option two is, let me set somebody else up with Derek wider. With all these other guys, guys, it's going to be, hey, Jalen Brown's the best scorer on this team. How can I put him in the best position. Right. So it's going to be a little bit of a shift of mindset, but I thought both Derek and Jalen came out with with very intentional prerogatives. Let's talk about the rest of the starting lineup.
Greg Manus
Can we. Can we pause real quick?
Will
Will? Yeah, go for it.
Greg Manus
We got a couple comments in the chat. I just want to show love to the chat because we're live after a preseason game and the people are here, right? Phil? Cool, Genuine Phil says double double for the ball. And Baldy Rob version one, one of our favorite commenters. He says, yeah, we should have put the ball in White's hands. I'm assuming he's talking about last year and let him create easy double double. And we say we need to start Simons or PP because we don't have a point guard. We have a starting point guard. It's D. White. And then he also says I liked this bigger starting lineup which is where we're about to get to. Tillman Garza needs a boucher Minot to protect the rim. Sam at the 3 JB back at the 2 is such a great advantage for us. I felt the most confident with D. White. Appreciate you Rob. Appreciate you Phil. Welcome back to another season.

Yeah, let's talk about the rest of the starting lineup. So as you mentioned, they started big. No pay. No, no Pritchard, no Simons. So Tillman and no Keda. So Tillman, Boucher, Hauser get the start. My best guess, Greg, would be that there is a potential for this to be the starting lineup. And if it was, I would probably say Tillman for Kata is definitely going to be something that switched out. But let's talk about specifically these three guys and then also the general concept of maybe playing bigger and coming a little in with a little more speed and quickness off the bench.
Greg Manus
Yeah, man, I, I never even considered Simons and Pritchard both coming off the bench together. Right. We've been saying which one is going to be the starter and now what if they both come off the bench?
Will
Crazy Joe Missoula. You never, never try to guess what Joe's gonna do. He's got something to obviously.
Greg Manus
But it makes a lot of sense when you, when you think about it. Because without Jason Tatum playing the four, it's a lot to ask Jaylen to size up and become the four, but it's a little bit easier to ask him to go down and, and play the two, right? Because if Jay Jaylen at the two J, Jason at the three is a lineup that we always kind of wanted to see a little bit more of. But to your point is like we never really had that extra guy that we could throw out there with them. Right? Where we tried the o' Shea Brissettes and we tried the Tory Craig last year, right. It just like didn't really materialize. But if we can have Jalen play the two, which was his position coming out of college, he's obviously gotten a lot bigger and stronger over the years. That's probably where this version without Jayson Tatum of the Celtics needs to be because we're going to be able to handle some of the bigger teams around the league with a little bit more size. And when you just think about Pritchard, if Pritchard's not starting with the ball in his hands as the point guard, if that's going to be Derrick White, Sam Houser, can do a lot of what Peyton Pritchard can do off the ball. Right. So you might as well lean big there and have Pritchard come in and be the ball handler with the second unit. And then it's just a question of who's going to be the five. Right. Because if Boucher, let's. Let's pencil in boucher at the 4 just because he was fun tonight and he's, you know, 6, 9, 6, 10, he can cause a lot of problems. He can run the floor. I think he'd fit really well with that lineup. Is it going to be Tillman where you get a little bit more of the, like, steady Daniel Tice type minutes? Or is it going to be Keda where you get the Boomer bus, Rob Williams type minutes? Right. And Kata didn't play tonight, I guess, because they wanted to give some other guys a look.
Will
Yeah, it didn't seem like there was any injury concerns or anything. It just seemed like, like, hey, we're. We're gonna rotate this a little bit. And I'm sure between whether it's Jalen, Derek Tillman, Boucher, Hauser, the starting five, I'm sure at least two or three of them probably not going to play on Friday night in. In Toronto. And they'll kind of rotate that through.
Greg Manus
Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm thinking. So, I mean, I like the idea of Jalen D. White, Hauser, Boucher and Kada, you know, especially if you go high pick and roll with Kada, you know, you know, gravity rolling towards the basket, it takes away the pop threat. But I think you saw tonight with Garza and his ability to time his screens really well. And you think about Luke Cornett last year. If Keda can learn how to set screens without offensive following, then I think that that could be a really effective lineup because Derrick White is going to run a great pick and roll up top. He's going to be able to, you know, hunt the switch pocket. He's going to be able to dance behind, dance behind the screen and shoot the three. You've got Jalen Brown on the wing. You got Sam Houser coming off of P. Then you, you know, if you hit Kada on the short roll, K has shown himself to be a decent enough passer at this point. So Boucher being able to stretch the floor at the 4, I think that they're. That's actually the makings of a pretty efficient, kind of like archetype of an offense.
Will
Yeah, I mean, I think the Celtics are going to have A release. Missoul is going to have a few, we'll call it toys. Few toys to play around with. I don't know how good they're going to be, but I think there's going to be some different options there. I'll say for Xavier Tillman. Man, didn't see that one handed slam coming. There was, there was part of me that was like, did he actually even get to the. Did he get up enough to get to the rim? And then it's like, all right, went in. But yeah, that was, that was a hell of a play there. From Minot to Tillman there. So I mean, this was a night where we're just celebrating being back, right? Like the grizzlies again without KCP. Josh Jaron. Jaron. Jaren Jackson Jr. Zach Edie, a bunch of other guys. Brandon Clark. So not exactly like we. They had all of their guys. We sat some of our guys.
Greg Manus
But it's encouraging that we whoop that ass.
Will
That is true. And it was a first half where I, I forget how many they had at half. It was like 65ish. Somewhere in that range. Could have easily been 85ish. Right. Like that. That was in the number that didn't even get to the heights of what it could have been. And of course, Jaylen Brown didn't play at all in the second half. A lot of the starting starters didn't play much in that second half. A guy who, interestingly enough, barely played in this game that I know our Guy Rob Version 1 has been talking about in the chat here, Jordan Walsh, man, not an encouraging night. If you're a part of the Jordan Walsh fan club, he plays just under eight minutes. Well, again, you mentioned it. I feel bad. It was. He wasn't bad, just not memorable. Like there's, there's not much that you can really look at. It's like that stood out. Whereas we came on this podcast and immediately in 18 minutes we were like, let me tell you four things I loved about Hugo Gonzalez's game tonight. And we've never done that with George Walsh.
Greg Manus
Yeah. And there was a couple moments where I thought that he, you know, he rebounded the ball decent. He had three, three rebounds in eight minutes. That's a pretty good number there. I thought he used his size effectively, but when you look at, you know, you look at Josh Minot out there, like it's just a bigger guy than Jordan Walsh is. Right. And if, like you're penciling Walsh into a very specific role, you're gonna lean towards the guy that's six nine versus the guy that's six six, right. And like, you know, Jordan Walsh is still super young. He's still like 20, like barely 21 years old.
Will
So he was super young when he came out.
Greg Manus
Yeah, yeah. It's not like we're giving up on the kid, but. And it's just one game. Maybe there was a reason Joe, maybe Joe likes him better than the other two guys and was like, you know what? I'm gonna let these two gu thing and Jordan is going to play more the other, like tomorrow night. He's going to get his shot on Friday. So we're not really sure. I, I wouldn't say that I was unimpressed with Walsh. I just thought it would, it spoke to how good Josh Minot and Ugo Gonzalez were, right? Like, they really jumped off the screen. And Walsh, we've seen him play before, it wasn't the first time we ever seen him on a court. So we probably weren't as tuned into like every single thing that he was doing. So he'll have his chance. I'm not down on Jordan Walsh. I'm more up on Gonzalez in mine.
Will
It. Yeah, I mean, it's, it's fair enough. I think just the thing I've always, that I can see instantaneously with Ugo and with Minet is like, hey, listen, I know shooting might be off. There might be this question, that question, you guys are going to affect the game with your athleticism, right? Like, that's already going to be there. And with Jordan, I'm just like, I get it, you don't make mistakes, but what do you do? What, what, what would you say that should do? Like, that's, that's, that's kind of what I, what we need from Jordan Walsh. So. You're right though, though. We will see. We will see. There's, there's more time here in the preseason. Walsh is young, but it is year three and on those, those second, second round contracts, it is, it is a ticking time bomb, unfortunately, no matter, no matter the age. So we will have to see about that. But anything else that you wanted to hit here, Greg, I'm excited. Basketball's back. I don't have a ton else personally, but if there's anything else that you think that we haven't hit from this preseason Celtics 121, 103 victory. Let's get to it.
Greg Manus
Anything else we can cross the Hugo Gonzalez hand stuff from, from the bingo board. Do we count Josh Minot's put back dunk as his poster dunk. I think.
Will
I think it was nice. It was. It was really nice. It was really effortless, which I was like, oh, that was. That was. That was really easy from like an awkward position for him to be able to go ahead and do that. That's not the poster dunk. Ugo had a. Had a mega slam Xavier Tillman slam that we talked about. Talked about. Those would be probably the closest ones I can think of that would have counted as posters if they were on the bingo board. So not quite yet.
Greg Manus
A full two minutes of big hand conversation. So I think we. I think we hit that on the bingo board.
Will
Oh, yeah. I got to work in legend. Taco Falls, the only person with bigger hand size than Ugo Gonzalez. So that will definitely be off of the bingo board. So we'll have that updated and have that circulate.
Greg Manus
No Kawhi Leonard joke, though. So we missed on that one.
Will
I'm not gonna lie. I thought when the hand conversation came up because Kawhi is also famous for having big hands, I thought that was going to be an area where it was good. I didn't know the answer was Taco Fall. I thought the answer might have been Kawhi Leonard to that trivia question that Drew Carter was hitting at. And I was like, oh, scale. Can't get it. I was actually on the edge of my seat, like he might say he's a guy who loves planting trees, supposedly, or something to that effect. Yeah, I was waiting for it. And I was like, ah, damn. The answer was Taco. But. But yeah. So no, no Kawhi Leonard joke. And honestly, fact that we didn't get it tonight, good chance we don't get it because it that. That's unless Pablo Tori Pablo come back out. We. We need part seven if we're gonna hit this on the bingo board. Make sure that you're dropping something for us here so that Drew can mix it up and get a little spicy. Celtics back at it on Friday night, this time against the Raptors and then Sunday against the Cavs. So we won't have anything after the Friday game. But Sunday likely, probably by before it is a preseason game. So likely we'll be covering the Celtics on Sunday before their game against the Cavaliers and we'll talk about what happens on Friday night. We'll see what those lineups look like. But Greg, let's go to our interesting team interesting player segment as we continue to preview the rest of the NBA during the preseason here. I got a team in mind and actually I'm gonna go first because mine actually leads in directly to it is the Toronto Raptors. That's the team that I wanted to go to here. And RJ Barret gonna be the player that I think is the most interesting. And maybe he's, he's certainly not the best player on that team. But RJ Barrett is a guy that I like as a player. I think we have to come to the realization we need to take away the number three pick, the expectations after Duke and you know, maybe he's going to be an all Star and all that. Like we need to wash that away. I think RJ Barrett is a really good player. I think Toronto as a team, we talked about this with S earlier in the off season. Like they're kind of similar to the Southern. They have like six or seven guys I think are real NBA gu. I think their guys make a little less sense together than ours do, which is our advantage if you're comparing the two. But I think RJ Barrett is a guy that's in an Aaron Gordon position circa three, four years ago when he was on the Magic. He's not going to be the guy living up to that top five potential. But I think there's a world in which RJ Barrett is the fourth, fifth or sixth best player on a real competitive championship level team. But he needs to be within that right fit. Kind of like Aaron Gore Gordon found his spot in Denver. Of course he's playing with Jokic, but being that third, fourth best guy was what was meant for him. Not being the first or second best guy where he's going to be on a 7, 8, 9 seed magic team. Right. And so I think for the Raptors they're right in that mix of the Celtics, the Bucks, the Pacers, maybe the Heat that are all just teams that like by default one of them is probably going to be the six seed and then they're all going to be in the play in or just outside of it. Like I think they're maybe to some, surprisingly to me, like in that mix of teams, but I think they have enough talent and I think RJ Barrett is the forgotten piece and I saw in the chat here Simon's for Barrett, I would be all in on that. I haven't looked at, you know, what the, the contracts are and how they match up and all that. But I think RJ Barrett's a guy that depending on when his contract's up, if you can course correct and get RJ Barrett, who I think is probably closer to the 25, 28 range. I'll look it up here in a minute. What his salary is, is. But if you course correct and get him in the 15 to 20 million dollar range, I think that's an awesome player to have in that range. And so I'm interested to see what type of season he has with the Raptors where it's going to get weird with Ingram, Barnes, Barrett. How do you try to fit those guys together? Does that damage his value? Maybe it does. And the Celtics can find a way to squeeze in there and grab because I think RJ Barrett would be a tremendous fit for the Celtics.
Greg Manus
So RJ is signed through next year, becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2728. He's making 27.7 this year, 29.6 next year. Yeah.
Will
So that would be the question is, are you ready to take on that extra year? And that still doesn't really help the Celtics balance their books. But I think he's a. He's a better fit than Simons. Well, let me, let me hold up on. I haven't even seen Simons play yet. Let me, let me hold up on the. On. He's a better fit than Simons. In my head said theoretically it would be a better fit. And I just again, as we've talked about, if you can have the Jays and have a third guy in there, RJ kind of fits that. I think probably 15 to 20 million is a better price point for it. But I'm interested to see what happens with him because I think that could be either a trade candidate or, you know, down the line in the next year or two. A guy that's something to look at if the market course corrects itself.
Greg Manus
Yeah. I just don't see RJ being ineffective enough to make 15 to 20. I feel like he's always going to be right around that 25, 25 to 30 range, which I still wouldn't hate. I think that he's a good enough player to make that much money. He's a gamer. He's got a really like. He's got a. He's a little bit like lefty Jalen Brown. A little bit. You know what I mean? Like, like super physical, can get to his left hand anytime he wants. A little streak from downtown. He's got a little bit of a playmaking gene. Not the defender that Jaylen is, but I think that he can strap up when he wants to. Right. And I think that rj, he's just one of those guys that he's been one of the Best players. Like every single basketball court he's ever stepped on. He's. He felt like he belonged, right. His entire life. And I don't think that ever goes away from someone who is as competitive as RJ Barrett is. And when you put him next to Jason Tatum, you put him next to Jaylen Brown, I think that would be like, probably the best wing trio in the entire league. I mean, we already know that Tatum and Brown are the best duo in the league. So, like, you add RJ Barrett to that, that's pretty sweet. So, yeah, I. I like that idea. I want to see Simons, though. I. I do at least want to see the proof of concept with him. But if Simons ends up turning into RJ Barrett by the end of this year, I would be all in for that. Okay, My team, I'm gonna go Eastern Conference, Southeast Division, Orlando, Magic, pick my guy. You know who I'm gonna pick? Jalen Suggs. Gotta be Jalen Suggs, man. Like, their season fell apart when Jalen Suggs got hurt last year, right? Like, he is the guy that is the glue piece. He's the Derek White of that team. Right? And if the Magic are gonna reach the potential that they have with Franz and Paulo just being absolute monsters, Jalen Suggs needs to be a huge part of that. And if he's unable to stay healthy or if for whatever reason, progression with his three point shooting, they're just not going to reach that. That ceiling. Because when you add Desmond Bain to that now you have a lineup of Jalen Suggs, Desmond Payne, Franz Wagner, Paulo Banchero, and Wendell Carter Jr. Right? Like, that's a pretty damn good starting five. There's no excuses for that team this year other than youth of their best players. But I think with, with Suggs, he's one of those guys that I think every single team in the league could take Jalen Suggs onto the roster, insert him into a very prominent role, and he's going to make a huge impact. He's just a winning player. I saw it all the way back at Gonzaga. Like, I was ready to trade it all for Jalen Suggs back then. And he's one of those guys that I. I still think I can picture him. You talked about how Simons, we couldn't really picture him in green like I picture Jalen Suggs in green almost every day.
Will
Day.
Greg Manus
Like, I want him in Boston at some point. I just love the guy. So he's one of my most interesting players because if he makes a leap, I think that The Magic could really be a contender this year in the East.
Will
Yeah, the Magic right now are. Are probably the hypothetically third best team in the east, but there's a lot of ifs that come along with that. Right? And Jalen Suggs and 2. Two big ifs with Jalen Suggs taking another lead, sleep and staying healthy. Right? And the staying healthy part probably being the number one thing that's most important. In his four years in the NBA, 48 games played, 53 games played, 75 in 23:24 where he shot 40 on five threes. Like, if he replicates anything anywhere close to that with the defense that he had in last year, you know, he played in 35 games, upped his scoring from 12 and a half to 16 and a half, shooting drop back down to around 31% from. From 3 on a. On a higher volume. But again, you're adding Desmond Baines. You're creating space that the. The Magic have never had. Like, if you can get that 23, 24 version of Jalen Suggs with Desmond Bain, with Paolo, who, you know, I've talked about multiple times, I think is on course to be a top five to seven player in this league maybe this year, maybe another year.
Greg Manus
I mean, last year.
Will
Yeah, and. And listen, I've. I've had to back off that a little bit, but I still don't think it's far off. Like, I think the two of them in three to four years, when, you know, when the Durant's age out, LeBron's gone, Kawhi's officially gone. Even, like, you know, Jokic and Yana start to get, like, a little bit older. Like, Paulo and Ant are gonna be the guys that are right there with Tatum, with Shea, with Luca, I think as the best players in this league in, you know, four years, whatever, it's gonna be like, they're gonna be right there. They're not going to be separated by much. Of course. I don't know.
Greg Manus
I forgot Wemby.
Will
Wemby will be in that mix as well. But Paulo's gonna be right there. And then Franz. The Franz can remember how to shoot, if Franz can remember how to shoot, and Jalen Sugg stays healthy. Those are, like, my two biggest questions with the Magic, right. For making everything about them feel a little bit more real is if those things can happen, I think the Magic are going to be, you know, a real problem. And by the way, I think the reason that you can kind of picture Jalen Suggs is a Celtic one, you just want it to happen really bad that you were, you were throwing wild assets in there for, for him to, you know, on, on draft night. But a lot of the ways that he gets described are just kind of similar to Marcus Smart, right? Like that's like a lot of the winning intangibles. Can he stay healthy? Will he be able to stay on the court?
Greg Manus
And Marcus Smart, Alex Caruso, like yeah.
Will
Like yeah, those, those are your type of guys. Caruso has been someone you, you're, you're always talking about trying to find a way to bring in. So I think that's partly why you can envision Jalen Suggs in a Celtic uniform. But I like that pick because I think the Magic are going to be a team that I definitely early on and planning to watch several of their games because I am really interested to see how much Bane actually changes their team because there's, you know, Bane has been really good, but he's also just been kind of in the background right like right now it's like pretty important that he is just as impactful as he's been described as being. And I think he will be like I like Desmond Bain's game and I think because you have have Paulo and Franz who are still the top two on that team, like it should be a good fit. But that's definitely a team that I'm going to tune into a lot early on to see how it looks. So I like that pick two very interesting teams. We'll see the Raptors on Friday night and I think we play the Raptors for the preseason finale next week as well too. So we'll get a couple looks at the Raptors before we head to the regular season.

All right, Greg, I gotta admit here. I did not, not fully prepare our new theme music that we are going to have here for America's favorite new segment, Mediocre Life Update that will be coming soon. Life was life and didn't have a chance to get to a Mediocre Life update jingle. Just didn't quite crack the list of things that I had to get done before, before this game tonight, before this podcast. But I pledge next time we do this, there will. Did you bring a very.
Greg Manus
Did you bring a Mediocre Life update though?
Will
I do have a Mediocre Life update. I do have that. I went first with the last ones. I'll let you go. Go first here.
Greg Manus
Okay, let's see. I got a, I got a couple I could go to mostly. So last week, if you missed Mediocre Love Life update, it was mostly food related. We talked about mayonnaise, we talked about watermelon. And what was the last one we talked about? Tomatoes. Tomatoes. This week I was kind of looking for some deals on some man. You know how like sometimes you, you want to just save some money even when it's not your money to save. So at our, at our company, we ran a sales.
Will
First of all, now that you added that. No, when it's not my money, if it's my company's money, I don't give a. I will spend that if it's my money. Yes, I will try to save if it's the comp. If it's, if it's a company's money, do not care what whatsoever.
Greg Manus
That's fair. That's fair. Remind me never to hire you. So I think, I think with My company, right? So we, we ran a sales competition and it was, the theme was how there was a gap in our pipeline and we needed to close the gap, right? So the, the prize for people that were like generating pipeline was Gap hoodies, like from the Gap, right? And my idea, my brain shot wild. And two days ago, or maybe it was yesterday, I was in charge of placing the orders for all the people that won the competition. Ended up being 14 people, right? We were expecting it to be like five people. So we hadn't really budgeted for 14. So I was like, okay, we kind of got to save some money here. And I just looked on the CAB website, 50 off sale. And I was just like, let's go 50 off sale. So, you know, I take all the orders. There were a lot of people that didn't recognize how difficult it was to like get teen, get 14 orders at once. And they were just like pissing me off. Like so many people are just taking way too long to get me their orders. I was like, God damn it, like, why did I take this on? But I went home that night and I decided, let me take advantage of this 50 off sale. So at like 9pm the sale was still going on, hopped on the gap website, grabbed three articles of clothing, all 50 off. And I felt really good about myself for saving a little bit of money. Danielle was likes to talk about girl math. And I feel like that's big time girl math move.
Will
Oh, 100%. Like something that you just had no intention of buying, but then you learned about this sale that was happening through something else that you were doing. You're like, hold on, why don't I use this to my advantage? But yes, I think that's, I think that's a great move. I think that's something that we all do where if someone shows you something and you're like, I wasn't gonna do anything. But. And this is the power of like, almost like guerrilla marketing. This is why you should offer a sale if you're a business, right? Maybe, maybe you just said, this is if the sale was still going on. Someone right now is like, let me go check the Gap website. Maybe they're gonna go buy something even if it's not on sale. They're like, I wasn't gonna go to the Gap website. Now Greg talked about it, so let me go see what's on sale there. So no, I.
Greg Manus
I was gonna say so the, the one last thing with, with what I purchased. Also a co worker of mine today said, you getting skinny? And I said, I don't know, interesting. And didn't really think about it. But then I thought, you know what? I. About three months ago, I purchased a whole new set of pants where I had to move up to a 34 waist from a 33 waist. And I feel like the 34s are too big on me now. So the pants that I ordered last night from the Gap, size 33 waist. Gonna throw them on and see if they feel good.
Will
Shout out to you, man. I mean, you've been hitting those 4am Wake up calls for a reason. Right, Right.
Greg Manus
Hitting my pilates, hitting my calisthenics. Yeah, man. Trying to, trying to get back in shape for our men's league.
Will
Yeah, I'll get there one day. Not there yet, but there's, there's, there's goals. There's goals and things to aspire to. All right, let me give you my quick mediocre life update here. So, Greg, you have my wife cooking. It's very, very good. Right? Like, she's, she's a great chef.
Greg Manus
Down.
Will
Me, on the other hand, and not so much, not so much. So typically in our household, there's. Right, right. There's, of course, within context, it's improved. But, you know, going from a George Foreman grill to like actually being able to like, do. To be of use in any capacity in the, in the kitchen, like, that's where we were starting from, is it? 0use to some use is basically where we're at. But just the way it kind of worked out, like, wasn't like necessarily intentional, but. And I didn't mean for this to be kind of food, but it's kind of a domestic thing as well, too. As far as a, A life update, typically there's a pretty hefty delta of who cooks dinner. And mostly it's because it's just going to taste better when the wife does it. It's just, you know, so why are we gonna, why are we gonna suffer for.
Greg Manus
I mean, we don't call you Will the misogynist for nothing, you know, get.
Will
In the kitchen, baby. But I digress. The last three nights, your boy's been in charge of dinner. And hey, everyone's still kicking. Everyone's still doing well here. We did some steak tips with brussels sprouts one night. Night. We did some grilled chicken salad the next night. And tonight was more just kind of. We ran out of time with some stuff that we had going on. So it was just burgers on the grill. So it's not like I did anything crazy. But at the same time, it feels pretty good when you take on a role that is not usually yours in the household and feel like you managed it pretty successfully, right? Because, you know, there's times where you try to step up and it just is like, this is why I don't do it. Like, I, I up. I, I forgot to, you know, I forgot to take out the. Some type of sheet that I didn't know about. And I, I, you know, did this all wrong or whatever it might be, and it's like the effort was there, the thought was there, but the execution wasn't. So when it actually does go pretty well and, like, if she heard this right now, she'd be like, oh, shut the up. Like this. That would be probably her reaction immediately. But for me, in this small arena that is our mediocre life update corner, I'm gonna give myself a pat in the back for. For three straight nights of, of locking down.
Greg Manus
Good for you, man. Good for you. We went to Giorno tonight. Just kept it really.
Will
We used to do a lot of. Yeah, we used to do a lot more of like, just have that on hand for like once a week or one. Not maybe not once a week. Once every two weeks or so. You haven't had a DiGiorno or, like a frozen pizza in a minute. How is the Jorno hitting these days? We, me and you, used to get down on DiGiorno when we lived together.
Greg Manus
It's all about how you dress it up, man. You know what I mean? If you just. It's just if you're eating digiorno without any ranch to dip it in or hot sauce to put on the crust, like, yeah, it's probably not going to.
Will
Be as good, honey. Maybe.
Greg Manus
Yeah, yeah, he's gotta, like, trick yourself in, into it being really good. And my guy, My guy Hazard, he. He's been hitting the farmers markets with his salsa, and one of the things that he's been selling that he just unleashed was grandpa's dip, which is just like a family recipe that his grandpa made to. Just for, like a dip. It's like a garlicky kind of blue cheesy dip. And I use that with the pizza. I was dipping the douro into the Grandpa's dip. Shout out to Hazard Salsa. Make sure you follow Hazard Salsa on Instagram. And, yeah, he's just been crushing it with the farmers markets. We went to a farmer's market this weekend, grabbed some cookies from this, from this girl that makes these amazing homemade cookies. So. So for dessert, we went with these homemade cookies. 30 seconds in the microwave. It's like a Nutella chocolate chip cookie. And then we had chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. So we just put the ice cream on top of like the melted chocolate and the cookie. Better than most desserts you get at a restaurant. So. Yeah.
Will
Yeah. Underrated is having some oven baked cookies around the house. Lorena made some, I think last weekend. They didn't last very long. I got a little too excited. But it's nice having them around around. It's not. It's nice having some. Some oven baked cookies around. It's. It's a nice little touch for like, after dinner to. To really kind of, you know, put a. Put a bow on.
Greg Manus
I'm trying to figure out a way to where I'm eating dessert like once a week versus not eating dessert once a week. I need to, like, flip it because I'm eating dessert too much.
Will
Yeah, I'm kind of the same way, dude. I've just, I've been getting more. I. I've always enjoyed sweets. I've gotten way more of a sweet, sweet tooth in the last, like, two years or so where I just feel like after dinner I'm just like, around too. I mean, that's kind of what's also been happening right now as well, is like, dinner is happening simultaneously as, like, bedtime and like, you know, bath time is happening. And then when it's all done, it's just like, I need a treat. I need to reward myself. Somebody give me a cookie. And it's like, I don't want to have a beer. I don't want to have a drink. So, like, I'm trying. So in my head I'm like, like, if I have a cookie, it's better than having a beer, right? Like, so that's, I would agree, almost the trade off. Right. But it's. At the end of the day, I kind of wish it just wasn't doing either. But it's just like, you know, we're all. We're children raising.
Greg Manus
What are you gonna do, eat a carrot or something, dude.
Will
Like, yeah, exactly. I know. Yeah, it's tough. All right, that's gonna do it. That's mediocre life. Update. Shout out to our guy. Alex Gonzalez is not here today. He is at, I think, game one. Capital's Wizard. So we'll get an update or Capital's Wizard. Wizards. Capitals Bruins. Cat Wizards are the basketball team that play in the same city as the Capitals. You guys are doing there. But we'll get an update from him on day one on the job but shout out to our guy good luck on the job. We will be back later this weekend again. We'll be next podcast sometime on Sunday. Make sure you're following us so that you know when we're going live when these podcasts drop at green MV pod across all medias. That's gonna do it. I'm Will. This is great Greg. Celtics basketball is back. Let's go baby. Every time I hit this high it's you. I find it don't take much no.

Dessert Chat:
This episode is a perfect blend of real-time preseason observations, banner19 dreaming, inside-joke Celtics nerdiness, and the familiar rhythm of two friends catching up about basketball—and, occasionally, cookies. The focus is on new contributors’ upside, shifting backcourt dynamics, and big-picture roster questions—served up in the unfiltered, optimistic voice of true die-hards.
