To Green with Envy with Will and Greg. All right, everybody. On today's episode, a sentence that would have made zero sense to me three years ago. Jaylen Brown wants to become a streamer. He went live with Ishow Speed on his IRL Across America tour. Don't really know what that means. We'll talk about it. But all the people interested in it got us thinking. Who are the future legends of Boston sports? So we're going to give you our top five list. We're going to talk about the candidates. That and more coming up next here on Green with Envy. You guys know the deal. Let's lock in. What up, what up, what up? Welcome in to another edition of Green with Envy. As always, this is what will we're checking in Join me as he does each and every time, my best friend, co host and the coach of our podcast, Greg Meninkis. Greg, we are crawling towards the time when we're going to have more real topics to talk about. Celtics training camp set to open September 29th. So we're just a few weeks away from, from real stuff to talk about. So this is one of the last episodes where honestly, we gotta throw some stuff together and see, see what works. But happy to be doing it with you, man.
Greg Meninkis
Well, hey, man, first first Sunday of football for this season, so that's something to talk about here, you know, sucks that Christian Gonzalez is already out for the Patriots with a hamstring injury, you know, so not off to a great start, but I'm excited to potentially have Patriots team that we can, you know, we can root for this year and really tune back in.
Will
Yeah. So, so, like you mentioned, to set this episode up, first day of football today, we're recording this right before the Pats and Raiders game. We'll start here in about 45 minutes as of the time that we're recording this. So with that, with the Patriots season starting with the Red Sox in the playoff hunt and obviously the tough news of Roman Anthony happening earlier this week, basically with him being out potentially the rest of the season, we'll see if maybe mid playoffs, depending on how long the Sox go, he can come back. And then on top of that, this stream, which I think Gregor with Jalen Brown and I suppose I'm not sure we fully understand, we'll talk about it here briefly. I'm not sure we understand it, but the popularity of it, the combo of these things all kind of blending together and you can even throw in the Belichick versus the Patriots that's out there with his UNC debut. That was just horrible. You know, you throw in all of these events together and it got us thinking a little bit, you know, what are kind of the legend, the current legend rankings of Boston sports figures. So what we want to figure out, and this is only going to apply to current Boston sports figures and we'll get into the breakdown of it here. We're going to give you our top five list and we're going to talk about, you know, who it is that we think right now are the biggest legends or potential to be legends in the city of Boston. So we'll get to that. But, but let's start with, with what got us kind of heading down this path. Greg. So Jaylen Brown a couple weeks ago, I think, announced he's Going to be a streamer or he's going to be streaming soon. I gotta. You know, this is. This is old guy talking, yelling at clouds right now. I don't get this whole streaming thing. I don't. I mean, even though we're live streaming right now, so it kind of, you know that. That I'm playing both.
Greg Meninkis
Ironic.
Will
Yeah, yeah. A little iron playing both sides of the spectrum. But Jalen Brown, I show speed, who is doing his IRL Across America tour. Look that up this morning. Don't ask me anything more about it. I just know he's streaming from multiple cities. I think he's in Pittsburgh this morning is what I last saw. Made his stop in Boston, and Jalen Brown played a prominent role in it and got to see them hanging out on. On the ships, in. In Charlestown, in the harbor. Got to see them doing Muay Thai together, I believe it was. And then racing, which didn't. Didn't love this. Racing and playing soccer on the cobblestone outside downtown Crossing. Just.
Greg Meninkis
I.
Will
Number one, I don't get this, Greg, so tell me if you get it. And then number two, tell me your thoughts about Jalen Brown and the iShowSpeed combo.
Greg Meninkis
I don't really get it because we're millennials, and I feel like this is more Gen Z culture, right? The. The whole streaming culture is more Gen Z culture. I was watching the. The Chiefs game the other night against the Chargers on YouTube, which was pretty cool that it was live on YouTube. But as I was watching that game, you know, you start to see more of the Mr. Beast involvement, and then they have that guy Destroyer, that's, like, on the sideline who apparently played football. Like, I didn't really understand. He actually, like, wasn't horrible, but, like, the, The. The combination of those two and the fact that all of these entities are currently trying to incorporate the younger generations and realizing that the older generations at some point will die. Like, that's what happens to old people. They die. God damn it. Blue was old. Like, yep. You know, like, that's what happens.
Will
That's what they do. That's what old people do.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah. So there's so much more, you know, just intentionality in trying to reach younger generations, and I'm just not part of that generation. Right. So I just don't truly understand it. I'm, like, wrapping my head around it. I only consume it in the clips that end up that, honestly, that Alex puts up on our social media. Like, that's how I get my, like, understanding of Gen Z culture. Through Alex, who is, you know, one of those. What is a part of that to.
Will
Have him on staff. This is why it's good to have him here in the building.
Greg Meninkis
We don't get it. He does. Yeah. So, you know, I. I saw Jalen Brown race speed. And, you know, the thing about speed is that he's actually like a really good athlete. Like, when he goes up against all these pro athletes, he actually, like, kind of holds his own, which is pretty.
Will
Cool that he had an offer to go play at Ohio State maybe, or he had or some pretty big D1 and was like, nah, I'm gonna make millions of dollars drinking instead. Basically.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah. I mean, that totally makes sense. I mean, he's a. He's a hell of an athlete. I. I know. The first time I think I ever heard of him, it was he was trying to set like a world record for the most backf an hour or something like that. And I was like, oh, damn. Like, I've literally never done a backflip in my entire life, not even into a pool. So, like, I. I can't even relate to that to any degree. So I don't love the fact that Jalen Brown was, you know, two months off of knee surgery racing him in downtown Boston. But that's good that he seems to be healthy.
Will
Yeah, I mean, his Muay Thai looked pretty incredible. He had that one, like, Bo Jackson esque move where he kind of climbed the wall and then turned it into a kick. That was pretty cool. Listen, for a guy who doesn't know anything about what's happening in the Muay Thai world or in, you know, that. That area of mixed martial arts or whatever, like, I was like, all right, that was, that was, that was pretty impressive to watch that. But, yeah, racing and playing soccer on, like. And for those of you that. And I haven't been to Downtown Crossing, which I believe they were. They were outside of, it looked the same as what I remember. A lot of cracks, a lot of divots, a lot of dips. Not. Not my favorite place to see Jalen Brown. And. And he looked like he was going. I don't know if he's doing 100, but he was going pretty, pretty hard there. Right. And like, to your point, like, you know, I show speed. He lives up to his name. He's very fast. Like, that is one thing that he's definitely done. I know I saw. This is probably like a month or two ago. Did you see that? Like, the, the bigger Jack Black guy that was kind of like going viral for, like, putting his face in water. And like, he has this, like, whole, like, wake up routine. I don't know. It went viral for a couple days. And, like, you know, he. He put his whole brand on, like, being. Being super fast. And like, this dude I showed. Do you know?
Greg Meninkis
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I forget the guy's name, but I. I do.
Will
I do too. He seems like a douchebag, so I don't really care about shouting, come out. But I love that I saw a clip where speed was just like, dude, I will wreck you right now. And he raced them three times in a row, smoked him every time, and was just like, dude, you have no brand. And then just like, got in a car and left, like, showed up. And I was like, that's pretty. That's pretty cool. I do. I do like that about. So, again, don't get it. But the part that I think kind of led us to where we're going with these topics here is, dude, everywhere they went, people were just. There was throngs of people across Boston seemingly following Speed. Every single place that he went to and every clip I saw. And it's. I don't think he's announcing where he's going. I think it's just people following this stream because the little bit. When I was doing a little bit of research today, which is how I knew it was called the IRL Across America tour in. I watched about a minute and a half of him, I think, leaving a hotel in Pittsburgh and just getting into a car. Like the way that you and I would leave dinner and walk. Like, it's just filming him getting into a car with his crew. And I. I'm just like, how would you not turn. In my mind, how would you not turn this off in 30 seconds?
Greg Meninkis
Right?
Will
Like, I. I just didn't get, like, to wait all that time for that lit. Like the. The.
Greg Meninkis
He's not Michael Jackson.
Will
Yeah. I mean, but apparently he is to this next generation. Yeah, I know that's. That's kind of what it is. But so from this. Let's get to. To the topic that Craig and I actually know what we're talking about instead of just spinning our wheels here on something that's just not for us is, you know, with the popularity of speed and, you know, if Jalen Brown's gonna get in the streaming game, we'll see. Maybe J. I mean, Jaylen Brown is already a pretty popular athlete, so I'm sure he'll. He has. He'll have a following instantly. Or if he already has a Streaming platform, whatever, you know, he' own brand. Jaylen's continuing to, to grow and expand, grow and expand. The legend of Jaylen Brown. So set this up first, Greg, because this was your idea when we were thinking of like how, how to do this. So frame for the audience and for me how you went about this concept and then building your list and then we'll get into to our top fives and the candidates that we had for it.
Greg Meninkis
So this was, you know, we talked last pod about how do we involve our significant others in like sports and whatnot. And this was actually one of those things where I brainstormed it with Danielle. I was like, how would we define criteria for, you know, the potential for a current athlete to become a legend in Boston but also as society is just ever changing. Right. Like it's, it's such a fluid landscape for us to be having these conversations in. Right. And you see that generational divide as manifested in the ishowspeed Jaylen Brown race. Right. So we came up with five criteria. I didn't share these criteria with you, so you might have your own. So this is what we came up with. Number one, you have to be successful. If you're not successful on the field, it really won't matter what you do outside of the field in order to become a legend. Would you agree with that 100.
Will
Yeah, that was, and that's something that I took into account with some of the players that I was looking at here. Is there, there has to be something on the field that leads to all the other stuff.
Greg Meninkis
All right, so we're clear on that. Number two, we came up with just pure charisma it factor. Do they have the Riz and I think with Jalen Brown, with Jason Tatum, you know, people like that, they clearly have that charisma. So we're going to talk about success, we're going to talk about charisma it factor. Would you agree with those two?
Will
I like it. Two for two.
Greg Meninkis
Okay, next. Business acumen, sponsorships slash influencership and how the current crop of athletes and sports figures are able to transcend generations in the influence that they have and the lasting impact that they have. Fourth, we have impactful community involvement. Now that impactful community involvement could be something like Jaylen Brown's MIT bridge program or it could be something like Jaylen Brown's 741 pop up shops. You know what I mean? Like what, what is the community involvement that, that you have there and then personal life, like do you have. This is kind of tied into Charisma but this is like how, how much access are you willing to give the world in a, you know, in a society, in a landscape in which you. Everybody has access to everything. Like that in real life thing, you just follow somebody for 24 hours and you see literally every part of their day. So how much of your personal life do you share with the world and how much of an impact does. Does that have on the way people see you? Whether it's glimpses. Right. Or whether it's just. Jaylen Brown's going to be streaming for everybody and we're just going to get to learn a lot more about Jaylen Brown. So those are the five criteria we kind of went off. I just want to get your thoughts on that and how similar was that to your thinking?
Will
So I, I like, I like the five criteria. I think they all make sense and I think there's a lot of crossover within that as well too. Yeah, a lot of the charisma you need to get the sponsorships and yada yada, community impact goes into, you know, your personal life. Think so, so forth. So I think all of those make sense. There's one clarification I want to make here. So I know at first we were thinking just athletes, but I think we changed it to sports figures.
Greg Meninkis
Right.
Will
And so did you also. So this is also including coaches. Current, current coaches, front office people as well, too, Right?
Greg Meninkis
Correct.
Will
Okay, cool, then. Yeah, I think, I think we're on the same page here. And I think this is where it's actually a really interesting time. And this is. We. I started to skim the surface of this conversation, or we did with, with Brian Barrett a little bit as to the landscape of Boston sports and what the hierarchy is. And I think that kind of plays into this as well right now.
Greg Meninkis
Definitely.
Will
And, and so with that, you know, this right now, the Boston teams and actually let's, let's, let's put this out on front street. I have zero Bruins. I don't know about the Bruins.
Greg Meninkis
The Bruins did not make. Make my list.
Will
Right, right. So. So we, we should clarify that because there, that's on here that we're just completely omitting. This is a Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots discussion just to be very upfront about it. Yeah. So that's number one. It's like in my head was thinking about how those teams stack and rank with popularity across Boston. Like that's, that's a part of this. But then also looking at those three specific teams, you know, the Celtics are kind of in the middle of a window, but they're in a transition period. And then the Patriots and Red Sox are skewing very young, right? Like they're skewing very young. So some of this is going to be on potential. So it's an interesting balance of potential for all of the things that you mentioned. And then also balance. And then some of it is it's already happened or it is happening. Right? So I think my list has people that qualify for all three of those only five spots and they qualify for all three. So let's do this. Why don't. Should we do. Do you want to do honorable mentions first or do we want to just give our list of five or what's.
Greg Meninkis
The let's go list of five? So you go the way we're gonna do it, Will Will go first. You're gonna rank five all the way to one. Okay. So we're gonna go descending order five to one. And after each person that you give, you can give 10 to 10 to 30 seconds, just a quick explanation as to why they're they're on your list. And then I'll go and then we'll just open it up to honorable mentions and we'll discuss the topic more.
Will
Okay, so 10 to 30 seconds, meaning I'll be done in the next 10 minutes.
Greg Meninkis
And cutting it up into social media. Let's try to keep it to 15 seconds.
Will
Okay, here's my top five current Boston sports figures to be legends in the city.

Number five. And I'm going to start it off by cheating. Just, just straight up going cheating. Right away I got Roman Anthony, slash, Drake May. And I'll explain why I had to go back. And right before we hop on, kind of rework my list a little bit. These are the guys with the future potential. The number one thing that you mentioned, success. Not there yet, but I think they have everything else at least stacked up for them to be in that discussion. And they're going to be the faces of two out of the three franchises that we're talking about if things go right. So they're going to easily propel up this list. That's my five. Roman Anthony slash, Drake May. Number four. I've got Bob Kraft. I don't think it's super fun to talk about. Things are getting a little weird between him and Belichick and they've been weird for a while. But the end of the day, this is one of the most successful owners in the history of sports. The Patriots are one of the top valued franchises. He turned a joke in the early mid-90s, like from when our parents grew up to. All the younger generation knows is success with this team and they can't wait to get back on top of. We'll see Pats Raiders, they're getting going here in about a half hour. Number three on my list, I got Jalen Brown. Jalen Brown, I think he hits a lot of the aspects that you outlined. He's got the success, he's got the charisma, he's, you know, sponsorships, he's kind of making his own. So I think that's a little bit of a unique factor. Certainly has the community impact. And then with his personal life, he's very out there. Especially this summer, I think we're seeing a new side of Jalen Brown, which is going to be interesting to think about. What that looks like going forward, he's at number three. Number two, I think is going to surprise you. And I, I wasn't really sure how I felt about this. I got Brad Stevens. Brad Stevens is at number two. And this is a legacy play. 100, I think, nine times out of 10. And we can talk about Brad versus Jalen, because I went back and forth several times on this. Most times I think the player is going to outrank anyone in the front office. However, I think Brad Stevens has a chance to really build a multi generational legacy with what he can do from a front office position. And so that's the play that I'm leaning into by putting Brad Stevens to. This could be a Pat Riley, Jerry west type thing that he starts to build up time over time, and we're at that transition point. So big year, big couple of years here for Brad Stevens, if that's going to be the case. But I'm betting on it. And then number one, I think this was the easiest call. It's Jason Tatum. It's. I don't even think it's. It's close right now. I don't think there's anyone else. Between the success, the charisma, certainly the sponsorships, you know, community impact, certainly not as high as Jalen Brown, but you still see him, he was in Rhode island earlier this, you know, a couple weeks ago and like you still see him out at different events. Like that's still there. And then personal life, you know, him and Deuce, like, who doesn't know about him and Deuce? We are constantly, you know, led into at least the. Him and Deuce circle, his other sides of his personal life. He may keep a little bit, you know, you know, guarded off, but I think we certainly get a lot. He was in the, the Netflix documentary Starting Five, one of the faces of the league. So to me, really easy. Jason Tatum at one, just to reiterate, number five, Roman Anthony. Slash Drake May. Number four, Robert Kraft. Number three, Jalen Brown. Number two, Brad Stevens. And number one with a bullet, Jason Tatum.
Greg Meninkis
Love it. I think you did that in about four minutes. I'm proud of you, man. That was, that was really well done.
Will
It was tough.
Greg Meninkis
I, I want to, before I give you my list, I want to just pause on Bob Kraft. Okay. Because he was someone that did not make my list, but someone I definitely considered and I actually have him under his own category along with John Henry. Right. They're in the, the Dark Knight category. The, the, you know, in Live long.
Will
Enough to see yourself become the. Become the villain.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah, exactly. Live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Die and be a hero. Live long enough to see yourself become a villain. Dark Knight, Jay Z. As like the office, where it's like, you miss 100 of the shots that you don't take. Wayne Gretzky, Michael. So that's where they're in the Dark Knight category for me.
Will
So in again. So with. With. This was my. This is why I had to cheat, because Bob Kraft, I wasn't thinking of him. And then I was like, you know what? Like, if we're really thinking about legacy and like, you know what's going to be remembered. Bob Kraft, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are going to go together in one category. You can't talk about their legacies without one another. And Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have moved on, so they're not a part of this discussion right now. Right. So that's why I put him in. But honestly, I cheated because I was. I thought about it like 10 minutes before. I was like, I can't just leave out Bob Kraft, like, after, you know, what. What he's done to transform an entire organization, that was a laughing stock and now is, you know, according to Brian Barry, like, if they're good again, they will dominate the market. Right? That's. And that's part of where Drake may comes in as being at number five without having really done much is like, if he's the face of a franchise that gets back to where the levels that it saw for 20 years, then he's gonna shoot to superstardom. But I'm with you. I think overall, I would feel more comfortable with Bob Kraft kind of in a separate category, but I felt like I couldn't leave him off. So I. I think I. I have no problem with you put him off to the side.
Greg Meninkis
Okay, I'm gonna give you my list, all right? My list for top five current Boston sports figures with the potential to be legends in the future. Number five. I'm gonna go with Joe Missoula. I think he's already got the success. He's got the weirdo charisma. And I think the fact that he has the involvement with the. The. The radio scene and he's so willing to, like, develop those relationships within the media. I think that Joe Missoula, if he stays with the Celtics, you know, they just got that extension long term, and the Celtics are able to come back from this down year. I think Joe Missoula could be one of those legendary coaches. You mentioned Pat Riley to Brad Stevens. I'm mentioning Joe Missoula to Eric Spoelstra. He also has that community involve ufc, which I think is really important as the UFC continues to rise. There's going to be a white house card July 4th next year, like Donald Trump's all in. And I think that Joe, that won't be.
Will
No chance that can ever be embarrassing.
Greg Meninkis
No, no, no chance. But I think Joe Missoula's involvement in mixed martial arts, as that sports grows, I, I think he could definitely continue to kind of make more in the national scene. Number four, I'm gonna go Patriots here, but I'm gonna go Mike Vrabel because Mike Vral has the past success as a player and now he's coming back to lift the franc after the down year with Gerard Mayo and you know, all the nonsense that's been going on with the Patriots three time super bowl champion. He has the legendary plays and the legendary moments with the, the, the receptions, you know, for touchdowns in the super bowl. And then now he's like bringing back the, the Belichick golden ear era back to Drake May and the current Patriots. Number three, I'm also going to go Roman Anthony here. I think the fact that he's a prodigy and, and he already did something that most star athletes won't do and he took the team friendly deal for like the 10 years at the, at the number where he came out and said, you know, this is enough money for me. Why do I need more than that? In an era where the numbers to pay superstar athletes is just like mind boggling to the average person, I think that actually will really resonate in a blue collar city like Boston. Number two, Jaylen Brown. I'm going to go Jaylen Brown all day, every day. Community involvement is the biggest one. The brid with mit, all the stuff that he does with his pop ups around the city, he's just very willing to make himself accessible in a landscape in which you need to be accessible and let the people touch you, right. Jaylen Brown allows the people to touch him. I think that's, that's really important. He's got the success, he's got the charisma. And I think the longer he goes into his Celtics career, the longer that Jaylen Brown is likely not to be traded. I think that we're at the point where Jaylen Brown is just making himself too much of a staple in Boston sports, in the Boston community for the Celtics to actually trade him. And then number one, I'm going to go J. Jason Tatum as Danielle Said he's not very charismatic, but he's hot. And I think that makes a big. I think that that's, like, really important to Jason Tatum's, like, image is that he's just this golden boy, right? And he has all the involvement with corporate America that allows him to transcend just the Boston landscape and become like a global superstar with all, you know, he's got Subway, he's got Jordan Brand, he's got Sofi. But everything comes back to Jason Tatum, the family man, his relationship with Deuce. Now he's in a celebrity relationship dating lma. He's got a baby with lma. Like, everything that he does, I think is very curated in the LeBron camp, but I think that it just works for him. He's staying true to who he is. And Jay, Jason Tatum is going to be my number one.
Will
Yeah. I mean, this goes back to. What was this two, maybe two seasons ago when we had Amina on and she was talking about the JetBlue walkway that they do before the game. And it's like Jason Tatum, every time he goes down, there's no accident. Like, he knows exactly where the cameras are. Like, you know, like Luke Cornett's playing it up and hamming it up. Some guys come in just headphones. Like, Jason Tatum is coming through with the. The Chanel and the three piece and the, you know, the whatever fashion statement that he's making. And, you know, have you ever seen JT with his hair or his beard not perfectly done?
Greg Meninkis
Right?
Will
Like, I don't think a picture exists on the Internet. Like, if you have, if you can find one, please send it to me. I'd love. I'd love to see it, but yeah, I. So, okay, so let's talk about your list, because Jason Tatum we number one with a bullet. Like, I think that's just easy is spoken for everything that you would need. I think he checks all the boxes. Looking at our list, though, I. I think they're actually fairly similar. We just made slight different differentations on, like, on like a few. On, like, basically Missoula versus Brad Stevens and then like Drake May. Let's move. I'm moving Bob Craft out now. I'm just saying if I had Roman Anthony and Drake May, and then it was Drake, maybe Drake May and Mike Rabel. Right? Like, those are the two biggest differences. And for me, again, and this is part of where I wanted to talk About Brad Stevens vs. Jalen Brown on my list, you mentioned the, you know, if I knew Jalen Brown was guaranteed to be Here, five more years. I think he'd be number two on my list easily.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah.
Will
The more. And I understand your point of like, I think he's in ingraining himself in the Boston culture so much that's like, we can't trade this guy, right? Number one. I think Brad Steven's a killer if he needs to be number two. The more I look at just the way the NBA is going to have to reshape itself, even with the cap going up a little bit each year and it's supposedly going up 7% versus 10. I think either this year, next year, like having two guys making 55 million plus, whatever, it's going to be like, the more I think about it, I just think we're heading towards Jaylen Brown not being here in two years. Like, I think they. I think he will be here when Tatum comes back. So I think you're going to have to see, hey, we need to 100% see on the court for our own eyes. We can't still build a team with these two guys. Not, not because of their on the court, but because of their salaries that we don't need to break up Jalen Brown into Jabari Smith, Tari Eason, and maybe like a young guy or a draft pick, right?
Greg Meninkis
Like, can I jump in real quick?
Will
Yeah, yeah, please. Go.
Greg Meninkis
So I think there's like a reckoning that's happening for NBA players that are not superstars right now. You're seeing that with Cam Thomas, right, With the Nets. He signed his qualifying offer. Money's just not there. Some of that has to do with just this year there not a lot of teams at cap space. Next year they will. But I think that you're going to see the, the contracts for people that are not real superstars really come down and there's going to be an even greater divide between the max player and the. The average player. I think that you're going to have the Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown model with two guys that make a lot of money, and then everyone else is going to have to kind of fall in at like 15 to 20 million and less. Right? And I think that that's probably more what you're going to see versus like the, like the Trey Youngs for. He's another good case study here. Like, he didn't get the extension because he's not a guy that the Hawks right now are willing to bet on just because he's too small. Right? And he, he doesn't play both sides of the ball. And I think that Those types of players are going to come down more to like the the mid market level guys who previously would have made like max contracts like Bradley Beal. Bradley Beal. You know, if you just look forward a couple years is not worth that money and teams are not just going to award contracts to people that are not deserving of it anymore. Think you're going to see like the real superstars get their money. The guys who are not real superstars come down into that mid tier and the guys that are role players are going to like have to make, you know, make do with five to $10 million a year.

Yeah, the caveat to that is if you can find a company that's planting fake trees out there and you just don't get caught, maybe then, who knows? By the way, loving that story Shout out to Pablo story. That story is amazing.
Greg Meninkis
Okay, here's my thing. Thing. Pablo Tori, I love it. I love the fact that you're, you're doing all this stuff. Pablori investigates or whatever.
Will
Can you go in and Bill Simmons called him a non journalist and he's been ripping off stories since.
Greg Meninkis
Can you go in and like investigate the Epine files, my guy? Like, can you go investigate UFOs like things that actually like I want to know about and that could make a real impact in, in society. Like let's, let's see that Pablo Tori. Because I don't really care what Kawhi did. Like I, I just assumed all this stuff was kind of happening. It's kind of cool to see that it actually is happening and that there's like rece for it. But like Pabator, you seem to be a great journalist. Go solve actual problems in the world, man.
Will
Yeah, I mean his show does do like stuff outside of sports, but it's usually just like entertainment stuff that he finds like interesting. But yeah, it's, it's, it's amazing that that seems to be the one place where it's like, oh, like this is like act. This is real investigative journalism. But just on like stuff. It's kind of funny.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah.
Will
You know what I mean? It's. But it's like, but it's like legit real work. It's like, like even like the Belichick thing he did where like him and Simmons. I don't know. Did you listen to him when he went on Bill Simmons podcast? I did, yeah. I thought he owned Simmons. I, I thought Simmons came off.
Greg Meninkis
Simmons doesn't have his fastball anymore, you know.
Will
Yeah, he treated him like a little brother. And the whole time Pablo was like, dude, you first of all, like Simmons does nothing but like oh, the aggregators, the aggregators. And then Pablo was. Did you watch the episode? And he's like, he basically was trying not to admit he only watched like the three minute clip.
Greg Meninkis
Right?
Will
And it's like, like dude, you about the aggregates. You only this guy comes on your show and you can't even watch the whole episode. Like come on, man. But yeah, but no, Pablo Tor's investigations are, are something else. And it's like I said with the Belichick thing, he watched an entire like for days. He went through and found the very first time Jordan Hudson ever appeared at, at, at Gillette Stadium. Like that's insane like detail to go through. And like this Kawaii story. We're gonna have a Seven months. Months. And yeah. And then the follow up with Cuban was great too which essentially was just that billionaires were like, yeah, losing million, losing millions is part of the game. It's like, okay, I guess I just don't get the logic. It's just chalk it up to the game. But anyways, back to our, our discussion here. How do we get here? How do we get to this? Oh, just building teams. Building, building teams. And, and the way that it's going to look in the future. Yeah, I mean we'll see. Right? And I think that's my play is that I just think, think Brad Stevens is going to. Right now if I had to bet. I think Brad Stevens outlives Jalen Brown in Boston. And for Joe Missoula, I think, I think it's interesting, right? I think this is a big year for Jones. I said this a couple times. I'm really. Joe Missoula is one of my most fascinating parts of this season because I think he's a good coach. I think his, to your point, the, the quirky charisma he has, has. I think it's quirky charisma that's a really fun, you know, added bonus when you're in the Eastern Conference finals and winning championships every year.
Greg Meninkis
He could very easily go into the Dark Knight category like quick 100 and.
Will
Like the, the way people felt about him that first year, which was unfair and then we flipped and we're like, oh, look at this. And we were guilty of it too. We got caught up in it. And I just think the stuff that Joe Missoula does, he's getting, get gets away with the last couple of years because they're winning. If it starts to be different because of the way you have to build your roster and things get a little bit more uneven for a couple years, I'm interested to see how, how much the media is willing to give him a pass on all of his quirkiness. And so then I think things start to get real interesting. So again, betting on Brad over Missoula was kind of my differentiator between the two of them. And I think with Drake, man, Drake May and Mike Vrabel Rabel was on my long list as well. And it's for all the reasons you mentioned. He just hasn't even coached the game yet. So that was, that was basically the tiebreaker was at least Drake May we have seen like some potential. I'm excited for the season. It's been a while since I've been excited for a Patriot season. And if they're successful. They're going to be the two guys that are there. And it just depends, you know, who's going to get more of the credit. We'll see. That's.
Greg Meninkis
But I think with Variable, you also have to factor in his past as a player. Right.
Will
For sure. That's the only reason why he made the list. Right. Like, if. If the Patriots new head coach was Ben Johnson or whatever, like, they wouldn't have even made the list. But it's because Rabel has that connection. A couple other guys that just made my long list here, just of. Of other guys I had written down. So Joe Missoula was on my list as well. Mike Rabel was on my list. I also had three other guys that we didn't name. I had Christian Gonzalez, but I think he's just too dependent on if. If Mike Rabel and Drake May are successful, they're going to get more credit, they're going to be higher on the list. So it's like even really be a.
Greg Meninkis
Legend as a cornerback, though. Even the, like Ty Law, they're more just like names that you remember. They're not quite like legends, I think. I wouldn't put them on my list. Yeah, yeah.
Will
I mean, like, Dion's probably the only cornerback that I can really think of that like, would fit into that legendary category. And he's got, you know, the charisma, personality. Like, that's a whole.
Greg Meninkis
Exactly.
Will
Yeah. Right. So you got to put him off. Off to the side. Two other guys that I. That just didn't fit, but I think they were at least worth writing down from this, from the socks I put down Garrett Crochet, just because he might win the Cy Young this year. I don't know. I don't really know anything about his personality, but he's 26 years old, and so it's kind of the same deal. I think he's locked up till 2031. So it's the same thing as like, Roman Anthony where it's like, he's gonna be here a while and if he continues this run, like, he's going to build that profile. Right. And eventually he'll have more. So it would be, I don't know.
Greg Meninkis
Ask Chris Sale. Like, maybe he needs to win the.
Will
Well, that's the other ring. You know, pitchers all the time have one outstanding season, then they get hurt or something happens, and it's just like too much of a gamble. So he's wrot down.
Greg Meninkis
Chris Dale was, you know, he was like more in the Randy Johnson lanky Lefty is like, a monster. Yeah, yeah.
Will
He's a big, big dude. So we'll see. But, yeah, I didn't. I didn't really feel confident with him then. The other guy was Derrick White. I put Derrick White in here just because, you know, he's got his podcast. He's got all the stuff with Sam Adams. He's got several local sponsorships. Talk about a guy that you feel like you see in the community. We've had his dad in our show. His dad's on a bunch of other podcasts. His family life is very well known, but at the end of the day, it's just, you know, he's a role player. Right. And so he'll certainly be a guy that, especially if he plays out his contract here, is always going to have a place in, you know, people's hearts when they think of. Of the Celtics. But to be on the quote, unquote, legend list, like, you got to be top of the pecking order, not just on the team, but in the league. Like, that's kind of the way you have to. Have to frame it.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah. Like, for him, it's. He's kind of competing with, like, the ghost of Marcus Smart. Like, can he surpass Marcus Smart in terms of, like, a Boston legend? Because I think, even though I would.
Will
Argue he may have, I think he.
Greg Meninkis
Had a championship dude. That's disrespectful to Marcus.
Will
Come on. Is it?
Greg Meninkis
Yeah. That's. Marcus was here for a decade.
Will
Yeah, I get that, man. People love Derrick White, dude. People love.
Greg Meninkis
I understand that, but that's like being a prisoner of the moment. Like, you have to give Marcus his flowers for the. The longevity. I think if Derrick White stays another three years, like, I don't think it's a question just because he's a better player. Player, but. Yeah, we'll see. We'll see. I also had Peyton Pritchard on there, just, you know, six man of the year, White guy in Boston, all that stuff. I think the other guy on that list, too, I did not. But I did have Al Horford. Even though he's not on the Celtics right now, he's. He's technically not on another team yet and could end up back in Boston. So he's a guy that is. Is there. He'll be on the list if he ends up back in Boston. And then I just realized Danielle, because she was actually taking notes for me because playing with James as we were talking it through, she has one more person on here. And I'm realizing now why she said you have to read this on the pod. She has a future candidate, James Manakis. She says the charisma, self explanatory personal life. He's got a hot mom and a dilf. This is all her words, not mine. Success. Can your 14 month old dunk yet? Community involvement exercise program for oldies and parents and feed starving dogs. And his business acumen. He's sponsored by Big Blueberry and Big Banana. So I love it. I now get why she was having so much.
Will
He's got the profile. Yeah, he's got the profile. You know like I mean I gotta amend my number five spots. Roman Anthony Drake may slash James Moymanekis. Like I think that's. It's all the guys that have the profile, they have all the potential. It's just are they gonna execute? That's the only question that remains. It was will the execution be there? But no, I love that. Yeah, I think the future's bright for that kid. I think he's, I think he's got.
Greg Meninkis
A shot for sure. For sure. But so this is another way that you can involve your, you can involve your wife Lorena. Maybe she, you know, as an accomplished executive assistant, maybe you can bring her into some conversations and have her kind of organize your thoughts. Because she actually organized it for me into different categories. She has the current, the Dark Knight category. She has the upand coming things. So shout out to her for actually putting in some work here. As we were just chatting, I thought she was taking some basic notes. She'd actually put a lot of, put a lot of thought into this.
Will
Yeah, my wife's not as, not as down with the involvement. She's more like I'm gonna go do something else rather than do this. She's like I don't got time for this. I got other stuff to do. But I like this, this exercise was good though. I like this exercise of who is, you know the current Boston sports figures that, that have a chance to be a legend. And I think if again Jason Tatum runaway number one. I think Jaylen Brown, if there's long if, if longevity continues to play out, I think he's the easy number two. And then you've got just young bucks that are, that are coming up and you know, Missoula, Rabel, the front office guys, they all have to have super longevity. Right? That's the thing with coaches in front office. Like that's a much more extended like players times are limited. Right. You're going to have an 8 to 12, 13, 14 year window. A coach could be here for 20 years. An executive could be here for 30, you know, so we'll have to see how that plays out. But I like it, man. I like it. A lot of Celtics on here. Again, based on the timelines that we went through, makes sense because they're kind of in their window right now. Transition period. In the window.
Greg Meninkis
Amorous Celtics podcast.
Will
Yeah, Amber's podcast. So it's going to lean that way as well. Last thing before we get out of here today, you mentioned before, and we're going completely away from. From sports right now. You mentioned before the podcast you finally had a chance to watch Sinners. I saw it, I think, the first or second day that it opened. I've watched the second time. Got my wife Lorena to watch it a couple weeks ago. Movie's fantastic. But you saw it for the first time last night. Hit us with your thoughts.
Greg Meninkis
Love the horniness. Yeah, it's like one of those movies you're watching. It's a date night, you know, you're hoping things go a certain way for a date night. And then you watch the movie and you're like, I mean, there's no way things could not end up there just because how horny that movie is. Right? So I think watching that was, you know, a fun. A fun date night movie. And then I think vampires in. In on vampires. I didn't really know who Haley Steinfeld was other than the fact that she's married to or dates Josh Allen.
Will
So engaged. But yeah.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah. So seeing her for the first time, I really liked her. I thought she was. She was cool. But Michael B. Jordan was so good as the Smokestack twins, which is also just like such a great fictional, like, duo that you can come up with the Smokestack Twins, like, and. And everyone in. In the Delta just knowing who the twins were, right? Like, when. When they go up to random people and they're like, I thought, you know, you ever heard of the twins? The little girl's like, yeah. She's like, well, I'm smoke. He's like, oh, yeah.
Will
The way they all just kind of immediately are like, oh, they're back. And I love, love the combination of, like, what was it? They got Irish beer and Italian. Italian wine, right? And so it's like, oh, they were in Chicago and it's like they put the Irish and the Italian mafias against each other, right? Like, they were both doing their work on the inside. So it's like little things like that that were really good. I also love calling it a juke joint. Like, every time I went to a bar for the first time, forever last night, and I was in my head, I was like, oh, this is like a juke joint. Like, that's the first thing that I thought about, like, in my head. But Sinners is just unbelievable. The music in it is great soundtrack.
Greg Meninkis
The score. Dude, I'm so jealous you saw it in theaters. Because as we were watching it, great theater. I wish we saw this in theaters. Like, the. The fact, like, just the little things, right? The percussion of the movie is all done through hands and feet, right. There's not one drum set in the movie. It's all just them, you know, like, as. As Sammy starts to sing, they just start, like, stomping, you know, stomping on the ground. And like, everyone there is involved in it. Like, the community involvement in it. The. The impact of music that it has, like, across generations. That one. Like the famous scene from.
Will
The scene where it goes from. For all the different. And then I love that especially because there's like, the Asian couple. So they bring in, like, some of the Asian culture as well. And then like, of course, like, the. When they. They pan out and it's just all them with. With no more like the. The bar's gone. It's just them in the field. Yeah. Just. Yeah. The cinema of it, the score of it, it's just. It's just beautiful throughout. Right? Like, it's. It's there. I don't think there is a spot where it loses your attention. Right. I think from start to finish, you are just locked in on every single beat that is happening. And there's no wasted motion that I can think of. Like, I think everything ties together and even the. You know, the lead vampire, the Irish dude. I don't. I don't know. I forget what his. What his name was like when he. Yeah, when he has them all singing outside doing, like, the Irish step dance, like, that's actually a really. That's an underrated scene. It's a badass scene.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah. If you. If you watch Michael B. Jordan in that scene, like, he kind of doesn't know. I don't think Michael B. Jordan really knows how to dance in general, but when he's, like, trying to dance to the Irish music, it's so funny. He's just, like, jumping up and down.
Will
Well, he's doing. He's doing what all the white Irish dudes that we know do when they try to dance. It's just like a. Of.
Greg Meninkis
Lot.
Will
Lot of, like, shoving and just yelling and.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah.
Will
Like a moshing around. He's just doing that. Yeah, it's a mosh pit. He's just treating it like that. And he's like flexing and like beating his chest, basically. But I, I thought river dance.
Greg Meninkis
Yep. Yeah, I, I thought the, the bigger social commentary also was just great in terms of like, representation and othered groups and how they like, all have similarities. But at the end of the day, like, their experiences, even though they're intertwined, are kind of separate, separate from each other. And like the, the Chinese couple in it, for example, like, they're able to cross the street. This is something that Danielle mentioned, right? Where like this in the segregated south, they, they can literally cross the street and go to the white section and into the black section and they can kind of code switch, right? And there's a lot of code switching in the movie. And I think, you know, Haley Steinfeld's character obviously being 1/8 African American in it. And actually Haley Steinfeld is 1/8 African American in real life as well. So like, like, yeah, there's like all these like kind of subtle hints in there. And then the representation of like the, the Native American group, right, where like they come in just for one scene. They're mentioned, right? They come in for one scene. The white people don't believe them and like, they don't listen to them. And they're like, okay, we're, we're gone. We're going to go back to our own space. That's about the amount of actual conversation that Native Americans get in the overall discourse in terms of marginalized groups in society. They're kind of just like there, but no one really talks them. Right. Even though they've probably had some of the worst atrocities committed against them. And you get them for one scene in this movie. And I think that was really intentional by Coogler because he could have involved them a lot more in, in this movie. And instead he's like, yeah, they're going to be there, but this is an allegory for what life really is. And this is a metaphor. So we're going to have them there. They're going to be like, hey, we're. We're trying to tell you about this, like, white devil. But if you don't want to listen to us, like, good luck. We're not going to try and say.
Will
We'Re out of here. Sun's going down. We out. Dude, Deuces, quick blame pie. How much blame do you put on the Asian lady for just not. I mean, I understandably not Being able to keep it together, right? But they had the plan, like, yo, we just got to make it to morning. They figured out what was happening. Just can't invite them in.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah.
Will
Just can't keep it together. What's the. What's the blampi for her?
Greg Meninkis
Well, when you're there listening to an Irish vampire scene speak, like, a very specific dialect of Cantonese, which I believe it was like toy sonis, which is what my family speaks like.
Will
And that was a great moment, too, that I was like, oh, my.
Greg Meninkis
Yeah, yeah. He just, like, takes over her husband's soul and says, I, Like, I even know how you like to be licked in toy. Like, that. That. That just triggered her, right? She was like, this dude, right? And she sees him out there, there. And this is something that Danielle and I were talking about, you know, with the representation and, like, different groups. Not fully understanding the experience of the other is, like, she's the one that invites them in, right? It's not the African American groups that are there because she can't. She can't experience. She can't quite, like, understand what the African American experience is, even though she's had her own marginalization, like. Like a formed against her, right? So I think that was very intentional. But in terms to your question, the blame pie, it's gonna be 100 of the blame. Like, she's the one that invites them in. All the other. All the other vampires can't come in unless you say, like, come in. And she's like, come on in. Yeah.
Will
It's like, damn, we figured it out. All we gotta do is just hold up here, like. Like four more hours. Four hours. And then we can. We can go get, you know, go do whatever we need to do and. And, you know, get out of here alive and go get your daughter and all this. Instead, we're all dead, basically, except for Sammy, who I love at the end, turns into Buddy Guy, like that last scene with. With Buddy Guy in New Orleans. And then they have. It's. I always forget stack or smoke.
Greg Meninkis
That's.
Will
That survives. It's.
Greg Meninkis
I don't know, right?
Will
The one of one of Smoker Stack, plus the one. The one that was banging Haley Steinfeld, that they come back at the end, and then they're in, like, hilarious 90s 90s outfits.
Greg Meninkis
Oh, that was so good.
Will
Over the top. It was perfect.
Greg Meninkis
Even the commentary with that couple, right? Like, there's that huge moment for them where Michael B. Jordan's character is talking to Haley Seinfeld's character, and he's trying to explain to her, like, listen, I. I loved you, but I loved you so much that I knew I had to, like, let you go, like, marry somebody else. Like, in. In the world that has been given to us. We cannot be together. Together. Right. So they literally have to become vampires for them to be. To be able to, like, exist together and let their love, like, manifest as vampires outside of the game. That has been, like, contrived against them. Right. So I thought there was, like, like, so much symbolism in, like, all the relationships. And I want to watch the movie like, 10 times because I know there's other stuff that I missed, but that's as like, you know, former English major Danny through a former English teacher. Danielle and I were both, like, what's all the symbolism throughout. Yeah. Dissecting it. So we had, like, a really good conversation both throughout the movie and after the movie. And I just, like, want to watch it again. It was so good.
Will
Yeah. Fantastic movie. Easy re. Watchable movie. Like I said, I've already seen it twice and we'll definitely be. It feels like one of those movies at least for the next, like, two, three years. There's at least one watch per year that's happening, right? Like, yeah, it's like it's kind of another movie.
Greg Meninkis
Exactly. I was gonna say, like, that and get out. Or the two, like, social commentary movies that I. I really will gravitate towards for sure.
Will
Yeah. Good shout out to Ryan Coogler. Ryan Cooler's on the heater, man. He is. He's doing his thing. Maybe the best performance of Michael B. Jordan's career. Fun movie. Episode: Jaylen Shows Speed + Who are the Future Legends of Boston Sports?
Date: September 7, 2025
Hosts: Will & Greg Meninkis
Special Guests Mentioned (not present): Mike Gorman, Drew Carter, Amina Smith, Dana Barros
In this off-season episode, Will and Greg take on two timely topics:
[04:45 – 11:47]
“This is old guy talking, yelling at clouds right now. I don't get this whole streaming thing. I don't.” — Will [05:11]
“...the thing about speed is that he's actually like a really good athlete. Like, when he goes up against all these pro athletes, he actually, like, kind of holds his own, which is pretty cool.” — Greg [07:28]
“Everywhere they went, people were just… There was throngs of people across Boston seemingly following Speed.” — Will [10:21]
“There's so much more, you know, just intentionality in trying to reach younger generations, and I'm just not part of that generation.” — Greg [06:55]
[11:47 – 44:22]
Establishing Criteria [11:47 – 14:39]:
Greg introduces five key factors for legendary Boston sports figures (athletes, coaches, execs):
“You have to be successful. If you're not successful on the field, it really won't matter what you do outside of the field in order to become a legend.” — Greg [12:44]
The Ground Rules:
Only current players, coaches, and front-office personnel considered (no Bruins!). Focus is on Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox.
[17:28 – 22:31]
[24:23 – 28:02]
“Jason Tatum — the family man, his relationship with Deuce. Now he’s in a celebrity relationship dating lma [Ella Mai]. Everything that he does I think is very curated... Jason Tatum is going to be my number one.” — Greg [27:40]
“Really easy. Jason Tatum at one, just to reiterate...” — Will [22:25]
Both hosts openly admit no Bruins made their lists, reflecting Boston’s shifting fan base and current lack of market-defining stars on that team.
[38:10 – 44:22]
Honorable Mentions:
“Dark Knight” Category:
For iconic figures fading from favor or in complicated endgames:
“Live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” — Greg [22:57]
Comedic Wild Card:
Greg’s wife Danielle nominates their son, James Manekis, for “future legend,” complete with a playful breakdown of “success” and “hot mom and a dilf” [41:54].
[44:24 – 54:11]
“There’s that huge moment… they literally have to become vampires for them to be able to, like, exist together and let their love manifest as vampires outside of the game that has been, like, contrived against them.” — Greg [52:46]
On Generational Shift:
“They have that guy Destroyer, that's, like, on the sideline… The fact that all of these entities are currently trying to incorporate the younger generations… The older generations at some point will die.” — Greg [06:15]
On Jaylen Brown’s Streaming Crossover:
“Jaylen’s continuing to, to grow and expand, grow and expand. The legend of Jaylen Brown.” — Will [10:48]
On the Criteria for Legend Status:
“Would you agree with that, 100?” — Greg [12:44]
“Yeah, that was… something that I took into account…” — Will [12:54]
On Missoula’s Upside and Downside:
“He could very easily go into the ‘Dark Knight’ category, like quick. 100.” — Greg [37:00]
Conversational, lightly self-deprecating, and packed with local Boston sports flavor. Frequent detours into pop culture, community, and generational change—plus a healthy dose of good-natured, nerdy sports debate.
