It's like, it's an art production company that be in tandem with Nickelodeon. And he was doing recreations of that in his own design and style.

You doing stand up yet? Do you have a set? You should have a set. They coming. Cause I know like seeing the pattern, it's like soon as somebody blow up, like to a point where it's undeniable, they gonna be on the road. But I don't want. I just don't like the people to go on the road unprepared.

It was like that going on from people you consider your friends and stuff like that. So I was just like, what did I need somebody to be for me? Like just cool. Like tell me some information, connect. Like sometimes it ain't got to have nothing to do with me. If you need, if you need something I can't do, I say my boy Vince could do this or. Cuz I know blessings going to always come back. Cuz this is what I put out there. I put out. I want everybody to do good. Like I love, I love that we doing this. It's like we all rappers, the comedians. And I was like, that's what they gotta do with.

I was in college and I was always, you know, in high school I got wittiest or some like that one of them superlatives. But I was in college, I had an apartment, we was off camp, me and my boy Vis and I had broke up my first little long term girl. You know your girlfriend you have after high school, the first one you Took that rope on.

We had broke up, but she. I think she started talking to a. At the airport, but she was acting like she wasn't. So I was in the room sick, basically. I'm in the room just fucked up. And my homeboy like, man, get your ass up. Like, he let me do for two days. He's like, get your ass up. So in the room, I'm in there writing jokes in my little book. I got a little book in there writing jokes. And then I come out of the room, I'm like, I think I want to go to open mic. And he took me from West Georgia all the way to Terry Boulevard. Hour and some change. Ride in his Geo Metro hatchback. Two big twelves in the back. But got to know that we ended up blowing it down. We had to. Took me to my first show, man. Jay Paul's on Terry Boulevard. It ain't there no more. It was, you know, and I went up and did good. Came back the next week, but Henry Welch was hosting the first day. I went up, man, and then I ain't had no jokes. I just started roasting people in the crowd. But I had a way of roasting would make you laugh, too. I wouldn't be so malicious. But I point out something, and we just. I get to talking, and I'm roasting this comedian, bro, and I'm killing. And then Henry Webster came up and said, damn comedians. Roasting comedians. I said, oh, shit, he was a comedian. When I tell you this nigga talked about me for 30 minutes. And even if he wasn't talking about me, he was like, ain't that right, fat boy? Lesson learned, sir. Yeah, yeah.

So that's when I had to get some material. But it was like those points in that going up in that J. Paul. So I think my second time doing comedy, I used to work at the TGI Fridays in Douglasville. Cause I went to West Georgia at the time I transferred from Fort Valley. And I think the second time I did comedy, I had the whole fucking TGI Fridays. And the white people in there, they all drove an hour to come see me. And yeah, I did. Matter of fact, I think that was the second time when the dude roasted me. That was my second time doing comedy. And everybody saw him cook me. But my homeboy was like, nah, you did good. Good.

But how does it work in the sense of, like, you go from doing open mics to, like, being on comedy? Cause, like, I'm gonna keep it real. Like, I was geeked up. Like, when he told me, like, oh, I know Ronnie Jones. I'm like, n. I used to watch that nigga when I was a kid. I like that nigga funny as fuck. Cause you was doing the Kevin on stage. Yeah. But I remember I didn't get there on time in Uptown. I tried to go up my first time going up. I went to uptown first and didn't get on. I sat in the crowd. I had to watch the show. And the Earthquake was hosted. He was just guest hosting. And he was like, damn, is anybody funny in here? And then I heard a nigga say, meet. He was in the row ahead of me. It was K Dub. That nigga came from the crowd and did a joke up. That bitch ripped. Oh, that's when he started. He started that Sunday. I started that next Thursday. So the list was my thing. And then I would start going to, like, older conferences, start taking me on the road. They'd be like, I got South Carolina this weekend. I got 100 for you. Come just, you know, I ain't got to pay for nothing else. I'm making 100 bucks to talk for 10 minutes. Deal. You know what I'm saying? I need to travel, leave. And I was having to take. So that was like. I was the $100 when I first started. Yeah, I go to Germany for $100, but I got.

Real money in the goddamn 01. I started in 2001 and, you know, just everywhere then I had to start charging more. 200, 300. So I'm getting about 3, 400 a show. But I'm still working. I'm on academic probation in college. I met West Georgia, but I'm just living in an apartment off campus and I'm working at this oatmeal steakhouse in Fayetteville. It's like a meal outside. Like a river running off of it. And my dad was the head chef there, so. There too, and trying to, you know, going back and forth, doing standup. And I had, you know, it was just a lot.

So a who make consistently $500 a show can still make a good living at comedy. Like, especially back then. Like, there's a lot of that move and tour a lot. And then what. What When I. When you get on tv, you get. You get to command more money. So I got on Comedy View. Like, I got on comedy after doing comedy for, like, seven or eight, six or seven months. And there was another comedian that when they called, that's. This is the reason why I do what I do, because other people don't look down for me. Like you said, you're not by yourself. Comedy call was the biggest call ever. I'm on the road with my boy Hurricane Andrew. He booked his date. He on the phone. He like, hold on. I got the next big thing right here with me. If you don't book this dude, I ain't coming. If you don't book this, the next. Like, he talking like that to the Bookers. Hey, who is that? You need to book? He gave me his phone and they took me sight unseen. You used to have to send a tape in and all that kind of shit took me sight unseen. We flew, we get our Miami tickets. You got to get yourself there. And he said, man, my brother live in Miami. You can stay with us. It was me, him, Smokey D's stayed at his brother crib. Miami. That's my first time having this super strong loud weed. I was like, this is the best place on earth. Miami.

They do it in Chicago all the time. So they was doing it in Atlanta and I came in second at the semifinals. They had the judges, Ricky Smiley, Bruce Bruce and all these people. But Ricky pulled me to the side and was like, like, you know you would have won, right? This Walter Latham. This the kids of comedy. You got on a jersey. I had on the Pistol Pete jersey. I thought I was the freshest there. I had a word. Pistol Pete 44 had pistol on the back. Cuz I had a sponsorship with a distant replay. They let me get whatever I wanted to. I just had to bring the back. So all the comedians thought I was balling. I was like, yeah, I'm taking this back. Yeah, yeah. But they. Ricky told me. He was like, if you had a suit on, you would have won. So that's when me and Ricky got cool. Ricky started taking me on the road. Give me 1,000 a show. So I'm making a little more money now. Then I went on the road. Then Walter Latham, we do that Kings of Comedy search. It turned into a reality show. He was like, we trying to find the next king of comedy. It was called the search. So he took 12 comedians from around the country and we had a camera crew with us the whole time. And each city we was opening for the queens of comedy. And we would do like everybody do five minutes and the crowd will vote. Whoever got the least amount of applause get voted off that city. He ain't gonna get on the bus. It was a big deal. So the winner got 20, 25 grand. The finale was in Madison Square Garden. Get 25, 000. You the next he could comedy. And I won that. But it never came out.

And nobody knows it, but the money was real. So you know I got a 25, 000 booth boost. After we've been on tour every Day making whatever we making per show. And we got per diem. I was stacking that, so I had a nice little chunk to start my life off with. But it led up to that. So it was just after that was like, what's the next move? After the search didn't come out. Cause it was the same year last comic standing came out. And it was kind of Paramount was the same company, so they shoved our shit. But Walter was like, don't worry about it. So at this time, now I'm cool with Walter Latham. I brought my manager around him. Kelsey Kelsey has my homeboy. He had a computer store at the time. He's a programmer now. He works. He writes books and shit for Google. Look him up. Kelsey Hightower, funniest. He's a programmer, but he's like a famous black programmer. But we went to high school together. This nigga, I bring him to Walter's office with me. He networks Walter's whole office. And now Walter got all these tapes of all the performances. He got every single Kings of Comedy show ever done. Because he did it five years before this movie came out. So it was a couple of iterations where it's Damon Williams on there, JB Smooth is on there. Guy Tories opening. These are the openers. And he got a room full of these tapes. So he hired Kelsey to log the shit for YouTube. YouTube just came out. So Kelsey transferring all these tapes. So I'm in that watching them. Like, I'm in the office in North Carolina studying this. I'm seeing, nigga, I'm seeing said sets that ain't never came out. Bernie says that ain't never came out. So I just kind of, you know, I studied up the greats. And then Walter was telling me, you know, I got something else I'm cooking up. And he saw My Bad Boys, he said, can you do that, Cleen? And then I said, yeah. He's like, I do this college thing where they all come to a conference and they book you for dates at one time. And I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah. He said, give me a tape of that. And he submitted me and I made it the first time. And then I went up there. It was like Boston was. We was in Marlboro, Massachusetts. This is Soulja Boy's the biggest shit out. Crank. That was the biggest shit out.
