All right, let's dive in. Hey, welcome to episode 122. Today we're going to talk about being someone that locals love to pay. So fun. I'm really excited to talk to you about this topic because I think sometimes as business owners, we spend a lot of time thinking about how people don't want to pay us or how they don't like paying us. And this really Affects how we show up, it affects how we market, it affects how we sell, it affects what we say, it affects what we sell. It affects our energy all around. And then from not believing that people want to pay us or that they like paying us or they. That they love to pay us, we end up spending a lot of time thinking about how we can get them to want to pay us or, you know, how we can discount things like what can we do to get them to want to pay us. But it's really coming from this place of I don't think they really want to pay me. I just see so many local business owners walk around assuming that people don't actually want to pay them, and it's killing their confidence, it's killing their marketing, and it's killing their sales. So what we don't spend enough time believing is that we could be someone that people love to pay. And I just want you to really think about the difference of how that feels in your body. I am someone that people love to pay. First off, how true does that feel? Do you ever think that about yourself? Do you ever think about why someone would love to pay you? How is it true that someone would love to pay you? How do you actually already agree that. That you are someone that people love to pay? It's just so much more fun to market and show up and talk about your business and sell what you offer when you believe that people love to pay you, that people want to spend their money on this. So let's start here. We're actually going to start with you. What are the things that you love to personally spend your money on? What are purchases that you've made that you were like, oh, my gosh, that was such a good purchase. Like, I'm so glad I spent my money on that. For me, it's like, my house. I love my house. It's my computer. It's my pink couch in my office. If you've ever seen pictures of that. I love my pink couch. It was spending money on our honeymoon to Hawaii. Best money I've ever spent. We have a trip coming up to the Bahamas in a couple of weeks to celebrate our fifth anniversary. I'm so glad that I've spent money on that. It's one of my favorite ways to spend money is for travel. So what's it for you? And then, like, what are the recurring things that you love to spend money on? Like, I love to pay our housekeeper. It's my favorite day of the week when she comes to clean our house. I Love to pay her. I love to pay for my Peloton membership. I love to pay for my esthetician. I love to pay for my Internet. I love to pay for Netflix, Hulu. Like, these are all things I love. I love to pay for them. I love spending money on my business coach. I love spending money on my mindset coach. I keep paying them over and over and over. Anytime they're like, here's another round. Here's another payment. I'm like, I'm in. Please let me keep paying you. Like, think about those things. If somebody was like, you can't pay me anymore. You would be like, no, seriously, let me pay you. That's how I feel about these things. I would be that way about my housekeeper with Peloton, with my coach, with Internet, with Netflix. I love to spend money on these things. If any of these things were like, hey, you're out. You can't pay us anymore, I would literally beg them. I'll be like, please, let me keep paying you. It's my favorite thing. Right after I had Amelia, I was going to pelvic floor therapy, and I had never done any sort of physical therapy before. It quickly became my favorite way to spend money at the time. And those sessions were not cheap, but it felt so good. It was like my one, you know, with a newborn. This was my one outing of the week. I, like, made a whole thing up out of it. I went and got coffee after. It was just my time. It was my favorite thing. My husband loves to pay. Our yard guy, his name is Bang. He is fantastic. We call him Uncle Bang. And every time we get a bill from him in the mail, my husband is literally like, yes, like, I got a Bang bill in the mail. So, like, who do you love to pay? Who do you get that excited for? And I'm asking you these things because I know you have people, you have services, you have experiences, you have products. Maybe it's other local business owners like things you love to pay for. People you love to pay. You love to spend your money on these things or on these people for different reasons. Your reasons don't matter, but you love to spend your money on it. Now I want to shift the focus back to you and your clients. You could be that person for your clients. You could be the thing that they love to pay for. How is that true? Recently, on Memorial Day, we were at a friend's house, and we were swimming in their pool, and it got brought up that they had a pool company that would come out to their house once a week to clean their pool and, you know, balance all their chemicals or whatever that means. And the pool company, like the pool company takes care of all their chemicals or if there's like a bad storm or something, come out extra times to clean their pool. Like, it sounded amazing. We have a pool and I hope my husband isn't listening to this podcast, but taking care of the pool is not his strength priority. I'm not really sure, but either way, it. It does not always stay in the best shape. It doesn't ever really just turn green and gross. But it's not, you know, it's not just the desirable pool that I want, but my office. So my office is in the pool house and I sit and look at the pool all day. His office is inside and it faces the street. So I just spend a lot of my time being frustrated with our pool and how dirty it gets or how green or cloudy it gets, or just how it's not taken care of as much as it should be. It just doesn't really get the attention it needs. And I grew up with a pool, so I just remember that, you know, my dad was just out there all the time taking care of it. And I just don't think my husband has figured this out yet. So, you know, I'll have to tell him, be like, listen, the, the pool's kind of cloudy, like, what do we need to do about it? Or, you know, it needs to be vacuumed. And I really think it is because he just doesn't see it as much. He's not thinking about it all the time. I don't know, but I look at it every day. I sit outside all the time. I love my pool. It was, it was the reason we bought the house. It was like a non negotiable that we, that we had a PO pool. I'm all about the pool. My husband, not so much. So anyway, we were talking to our friends and we started asking, you know, all about this pool service and how much it cost and all that. And of course in my brain I'm like, okay, well couldn't my husband just take care of this a couple minutes a day? And I'm sure he's thinking the same thing about me. But I asked our friends, I was like, okay, do you love paying for this service? And they were both like, yes. And I was like, is it your favorite way to spend money? And they thought about it for a second. I could tell they had never really thought about spending money in that way. But after a second or two they were like, yeah, like, we love it. And the husband told me, like, he doesn't like keeping up with the chemicals. And he was talking about not having to deal with all the random critters that get in the pool. And I was like, that's me, too. We live in South Louisiana, so you just never know what you're gonna have in your pool. My husband and I have a deal. He does not tell me whatever ends up in our pool. But I'm telling you this because this pool service was an investment for them to make each month for them to, you know, pay for this service for people to come out. But they loved it. They literally said it was their favorite way to spend money. And I want you to really let that sink in. Your clients could feel the same way about you. They could love paying you. They could look forward to it. They could talk about it with their friends, with their family. They could thank you for charging them. They could feel thankful and grateful, elated to pay you. So here are some questions that I want to leave you with today. What would change if you believed you were someone people love to pay? How would you market? How would you sell? How would you talk about what you offer? How would you price it? How would you show up? Because when you believe that, when you believe you're someone that people love to pay, and when you decide to show up as that person, everything shifts. People can feel it. So this week, I actually want you to look for evidence who already loves paying you. What feedback have you received from past clients, current clients, to where you know they loved paying you? And where can you just show up more boldly, assuming that people want what you offer, that they're going to love to pay for it? And if you want help stepping into this even more consistently and confidently, come join us inside the LocalPreneur Academy. This is where you're going to get the belief work, the skill sets, and the local marketing plan to follow to get you fully booked in your city. Host: Leslie Presnell
Release Date: June 17, 2025
In episode 122 of the Grow Your Local Business podcast, host Leslie Presnell delves into the transformative concept of becoming "someone locals love to pay." This episode emphasizes the critical mindset shift necessary for local business owners to thrive by fostering genuine connections with their community, ultimately leading to a steady stream of clients and increased revenue.
Leslie begins by addressing a common hurdle among local business owners: the belief that people are reluctant or unwilling to pay for their services. She explains how this negative mindset can adversely affect every aspect of a business, from marketing and sales to personal confidence and energy.
"I just see so many local business owners walk around assuming that people don't actually want to pay them, and it's killing their confidence, it's killing their marketing, and it's killing their sales."
— Leslie Presnell [04:30]
By shifting this perspective to one of confidence and belief that clients do want to pay—and love paying—the entire approach to business transforms. This positive mindset not only enhances marketing efforts but also makes the sales process more enjoyable and authentic.
To illustrate the importance of valuing your own spending, Leslie shares personal anecdotes about the things she loves to invest in. This exercise is designed to help listeners recognize that if they find joy in spending money on certain items or services, they should embody that same value in what they offer.
"I love spending money on my business coach. I love spending money on my mindset coach. Anytime they're like, here's another round. Here's another payment. I'm like, I'm in."
— Leslie Presnell [07:50]
She encourages listeners to reflect on their own purchases that bring them satisfaction and to identify recurring expenses they willingly invest in. This reflection helps business owners understand the intrinsic value their offerings can hold for clients.
Transitioning from personal reflection to business application, Leslie shares a relatable story about a pool service company. She highlights how her friends enthusiastically invest in their pool maintenance, considering it a favorite expense despite its cost.
"They loved it. They literally said it was their favorite way to spend money."
— Leslie Presnell [13:45]
This example underscores that clients can and do find genuine value in services they invest in regularly. By perceiving your business through this lens, you can position your offerings as indispensable and valued by your local community.
To cement the mindset shift, Leslie poses several thought-provoking questions for listeners to consider:
These questions are designed to prompt business owners to evaluate and adjust their strategies, ensuring alignment with the belief that their clients genuinely value and enjoy paying for their offerings.
Leslie wraps up the episode by encouraging listeners to seek evidence of existing clients who already love paying them. She suggests looking for positive feedback and testimonials that reinforce this belief. For those seeking further assistance in adopting this confident and client-centric approach, Leslie invites them to join the LocalPreneur Academy.
