A police car turned into a quiet cul de sac in Leander, Tex. Two officers got out and walked up to one of the houses. The place was big and expensive looking, with white stone walls and a double garage. A young woman with bleach blonde hair answered the door. The police officer said they were here to do a welfare check. There had been some calls about two Brazilian women reportedly living at this address. The young woman told the officers her name was Leticia. She assured them she was fine. No one was holding her against her will. One of the officers pulled out his phone and found the number for the owner of the house. Right away, Kat picked up the phone. She was away on vacation, but she said Leticia was a friend who was doing some work for her. These reports were just people causing trouble on social media. Police officers looked closely at Leticia. They told her to take care, turned around and walked back to their car. Leticia closed the door as the cruiser pulled away. She wasn't to know yet, but that wouldn't be the last time the police would take an interest in what had been happening at this house. In fact, for everyone living there, that visit was just the beginning of a whole new level of chaos.

From Wondering. I'm Chico Felitti and this is don't cross cat. Episode 5 Closing in it was the day after the police welfare check. All over Brazilian social media, people were waiting for news. People like Silmara Izuca.
Silmara Izuca
I was part of the Telegram Kei Chitohis group chat that had thousands of members and that group was just crazy.
Chico Felitti
She was living in Los Angeles at the time where she worked as an actor. She'd heard about the missing women just a few days before.
Silmara Izuca
I was on Twitter, just scrolling down and then I saw a thread of a friend of Desiree and then he was asking for help. And then when I closed Twitter and I opened my Facebook I saw a post of Leticia's father just popped up.
Chico Felitti
The pain he was going through struck a chord. As a Brazilian living in the US she couldn't help but think about her own parents back home.
Silmara Izuca
What if it was my parents needing help? They don't speak in English trying to find me here in the US I would love to know that someone tried to help my parents. You know, translating or with the calls.
Chico Felitti
So Xionmara made a decision.
Silmara Izuca
I comment like, hey, I live here in the us I can help you. I can call the police. Hi, I'm calling because I would like to follow up with any updates about the two missing Brazilian girls.
Chico Felitti
Okay, so I sent officer when I was there yesterday.
Kat Torres
So, okay.
Officer
Last time around midnight or 1:00 and everyone was fine.
Silmara Izuca
Sorry, what?
Chico Felitti
For a moment, Sumata was thrown.
Officer
Everything was reported to be okay. As far as what I'm reading here.
Silmara Izuca
Oh, okay.
Kat Torres
So she's okay.
Silmara Izuca
She's not.
Officer
No one's being held against her will. No signs of a distress. Everybody seems to be okay. No emergency.
Silmara Izuca
Okay. Okay, got it. I'm gonna tell her parents. Thank you so much, officer.
Chico Felitti
The call had not turned out the way Simara had fought.
Silmara Izuca
So I was like, okay.
Chico Felitti
She passed a message on to Leticia's parents, then posted the recording of her call on TikTok.
Silmara Izuca
Leticia's mom gave an interview for Ricor. So the case was when I woke up. LA time. The case was already exploded in Brazil. All the media was on the case. Luis Bacci, Geraldo. Luis. I remember everyone was talking about the case, all the media.
Chico Felitti
It wasn't just Instagram drama anymore. The story had gone mainstream. It was on network television. But the search hadn't just made an impression in Brazil. A few days later, the police got another call. What's your name?
Zach
Kat Torres.
Chico Felitti
Are you saying Chad or Kat?
Zach
Kat.
Chico Felitti
K A T. K a T. Kat. What's going on? Kat was away on vacation in Connecticut. That part was true. And she was not happy.
Zach
Okay, so please listen to this. Your officer, he went to my house. He knocked on the door. I'm not at home. Okay? Leticia, she's my friend. And I told him I'm a celebrity, I'm a famous person. And haters on gossip pages in Brazil are trying to hurt me and my business. And they're doing all these lies and they're saying all these things.
Chico Felitti
Right? But I need to first make sure you're talking about a Leander police department officer.
Zach
Did you send two officers to my house two days ago? Do you know that you have the right. I am a famous person. Do you want to get me fucking killed? Because I'm gonna go then and talk to this guy. Don't tell haters. Don't tell people. Online gossip pages on Instagram with millions and millions of people. And I want to know where this officer is, and I'm gonna sue him.
Chico Felitti
What's your phone number? The police told her they get a sergeant to call her back. But Kat was not one to sit down and wait for her phone to ring.
Kat Torres
Invasion put in vagina.
Chico Felitti
She took to a live video stream to air her frustrations. She said the reports were nothing but lies and pure envy. Soon a friend messaged Simone.
Silmara Izuca
Hey, are you watching the live stream on Instagram? And then when I jumped in, she was describing me. She never said my name, but she was like, oh, that fat girl. I do remember that she called me fat. And she was very cocky to be so sure that she can call the police and sue them. I was like, okay, karma will come for you.
Chico Felitti
But in reality, Kat wasn't so sure of herself. According to Desiree's book, Kat was having these visions about what might happen to all of them. She said she could see mysterious cars parked outside her house watching her. Eventually, Kat called Desiree in a panic. She screamed at Desiree to get out of the house, pack a bag, and leave lots of food out for the pets. She told Desiree to get to the airport, like, immediately. In less than three hours, Desiree and Leticia were on the plane. They were on the run.

At 24, I lost my narrative. Or rather, it was stolen from me. And the Monica Lewinsky that my friends and family knew was usurped by false narratives, callous jokes, and politics. By the time Desiree and Leticia left the Leander house, I was following the search as best as I could. So were thousands of other followers who were glued to their phones and computers, but information was limited. All we had were cats, furious denials that anything was wrong. But thanks to Desiree's book and legal and police records, I have been able to reconstruct what seems to have happened with Kat and the missing women after they fled the house in Texas. Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We'll be landing in about two minutes. Hope you're enjoying your flight too. When Desiree and Leticia got to Kat's hotel in Connecticut, she gave Desiree a massive hug and promised her everything would be okay. She told them that they were stronger now that they were together and they would never be apart again. Kat booked her a room, ordered her some dinner, then she placed some amulets in the room for protection sake, and even took her precious dog to Desiree's room to keep her company. The next morning, Kat told Desiree they needed to go downtown to buy wigs and sunglasses. I mean, after all that press that they were getting in Brazil, Kat had grown paranoid. She was terrified. The police in the US Were still suspicious, but not terrified enough to stop pressuring Desiree to do sex work. Kat's plan was to change Desiree's appearance so she could continue booking clients with a new look on the same old escort site. Meanwhile, Kat went all out to shut down the media frenzy. And there was one person she blamed most of all for causing it. Desiree's best friend, Patty. In the video, you can see Kat in the front seat of a car. She's smiling and saying very politely, oh, Patty, how funny that you became an ex friend in the blink of an eye. Kat pans the phone over to the back seat and show your faces, girls. Say hello to that whore. The girls were Desiree and Leticia, looking very blonde and very smiley. Cat also called Perry a piranha, like the flesh eating fish, but in Brazilian Portuguese. That's one of the most misogynistic insults there is. I guess in English, it's like calling someone a bitch, but way worse. Kat then doubled down on her outlandish claims that Patty was abusing her kids. You're gonna regret messing with. I'm a quiet girl, but if you cross me, you're fucked. Listen to me, you're fucked. But Patty wasn't the only one that Kat blamed for her situation. By now, Kat had moved everyone from the hotel to a remote house on a lake elsewhere in Connecticut. It was at the lake house that she livestreamed a long conversation with Zach.
Kat Torres
Are you proud to be married to me?
Officer
I'm very proud.
Kat Torres
Very proud.
Chico Felitti
The video was 30 minutes long. Zach sat on a white chair, wearing jeans and a beige Nike hoodie, holding a can of Red Bull in his right hand. You can see the lake through the window behind him, surrounded by colorful trees and a pole with an American flag.
Kat Torres
What would you say to people that I am for you, in your heart? What am I? Your wife. What else?
Officer
My wife, my lover, my best friend. Person that saved me, that gave me this beautiful life I have now.
Chico Felitti
Kat told him who she fought was truly to blame for their situation.
Kat Torres
Does your family like that I am a witch?
Officer
I don't think so. I think they're scared of it. They don't understand it like most Texas people.
Chico Felitti
For Kat, it was Zach's family who were the real manipulators.
Kat Torres
So they invented that I was a the Cam girl and stuff because they didn't want you to go, right? So they invented all these stories and they continue inventing all those stories. And do you think they're manipulative people, your family? Do you think your father is a manipulative person? Do you think your father has some mental issues?
Officer
He's definitely not 100%.
Chico Felitti
Kat had long been uneasy about Zach's father. In fact, at one point, seemingly under the effects of Ayahuasca, she threatened him on Instagram.
Kat Torres
His father has no meaning.
Zach
Kill him.
Kat Torres
Kill him. Kill Letitia, say, kill him. Kill his father. Whose father? Kill Zachary father.
Chico Felitti
But now she believed it was Zachary, Zach's family, who had leaked her address. In Texas and forced them to go on the run. She asked Zach what he thought about the allegations against her.
Officer
It's the most stupid thing I've ever heard in my life. That Kat Torres can kidnap two grown women.
Chico Felitti
Then Kat brought up Desiree and Leticia.
Officer
Yeah.
Kat Torres
What would you say about Desiree?
Officer
She's a very sweet girl that just wants her own space and she's just enjoying having a beautiful life in America.
Kat Torres
She's so sweet. Right. She would never hurt a fly. What would you say about Leticia?
Officer
Leticia's for you. Somebody that's very loyal and perfect. A very good friend for you. They're both good girls.
Kat Torres
How do you think Letisia feel right now that people are saying she's a prostitute and she makes sex for money in Texas? How do you think she feels right now about that?
Officer
Like outraged. Just in awe of how people can be so stupid and think that of her. It's so wrong to think that of anyone.
Chico Felitti
Zach didn't seem too comfortable being on camera, but then again, he also seemed convinced that nothing Kat was doing was a problem.
Kat Torres
What do you think the police is thinking about all this? What do you think they're thinking?
Officer
I think they're tired of it and they don't want to deal with it. They have better things to do than to be called from people, not even from another country, that don't know anything, hardly speak English and just speaking bullshit to the police here that have so many better things than right.
Kat Torres
I think the police in America has more dangerous people to go after than us than me. Right. I can be pretty much dangerous when I'm angry, but I think they have worse people to catch.
Chico Felitti
It's hard to know how much Zach really knew at this point, but one thing is clear. He had become isolated from his family and increasingly dependent on Kat. Just like Leticia. And they're serious.
Kat Torres
And when people cross me, how. How am I? How do you. How do I behave?
Officer
Very scary. I try not to cross you as much as possible.
Kat Torres
Very angry. Right.

A few days after that conversation, Kat, Zach, Desiree and Leticia were on the road again. This time they all left for Maine, staying at another remote lake house. Then a few days after that, Kat decided they should move yet again, this time to Miami. According to her book, it was at this point Desiree's faith in Cat began to waver. By the way her words are spoken by an actor.
Desiree
She kept saying things like she was the incarnation of Jesus Christ, that she was superior to all other humans and that she was above the law and would never be arrested.
Chico Felitti
Kat told Desiree even if she did get arrested, she would use her magic to make the handcuffs fall off. Desiree was terrified of Kat, but she was also afraid of the police. She knew the sex work was illegal and was scared she could be in trouble with the law. She was stuck.
Desiree
I felt like a fugitive jumping from town to town so we wouldn't be recognized. It was a horror show. At one point I asked myself, why am I still here?
Chico Felitti
But while on the road to Miami, something unexpected happened. A detective sent a message to Kat's phone asking for a video call. They were following up on the welfare check, and Kat instructed Desiree in detail what to say to the detective.
Desiree
Kat told me exactly what to say to the police, and she threatened me, telling me I had to stick to the script.
Chico Felitti
In a video obtained by the BBC, you can see cell phone footage of Kat, Desiree and Leticia in a moving car. When the detective calls, it's unclear who took the video, but you can see Kat in the front passenger seat. She sounds calm, confident even. She turned the camera directly to her and said, listen, Detective, I was struggling with depression and Desiree wanted to support me during this difficult time. She's my friend, so that's why we're together in this. Kat told the detective that she was feeling better now. You need to help us, she said. There are people accusing me of things I didn't do. We are the ones at risk. Kat ended the call confident as ever. Desiree and Leticia hadn't seen said a word to raise suspicion, but the strain was starting to show. The day after they got to Miami, Kat suddenly decided they needed to go back to Maine. Once at the airport, she got into a fight with Zach, who had been drinking. She told him she didn't want a drunk to be the father of her children. She may have been thinking of her own father. Then she demanded he give back everything she had ever given him. Zach turned around and left barefoot in his shorts, with no money, no documents. After Kat and Desiree arrived back to the rental in Maine, Kat realized she had left one of the windows cracked open. Her cat had run away. In her book, Desirous Cat turned on her.
Desiree
She destroyed everything she saw in front of her. She kicked and threw things at me. She said it was my fault that her marriage failed and that the cat ran away. That it was all because of me.
Chico Felitti
The following morning on November 1, 2022, Desiree woke up to Cat's dog jumping on her bed. The dog was terrified because Kat was screaming at someone on the phone. When the screams ended, Desiree got out of bed to see what was happening.
Zach
You guys have to do something about it.
Chico Felitti
Kat was on the phone with local police complaining about sex, that you guys.
Zach
Have to go to his address and stop this old fucking crazy man.
Chico Felitti
Okay, so we need to go to the address and check on your father in law.
Zach
He's the one saying the police, that I'm a smuggler. I smuggle people in America, crazy shit. Please do something about it.
Silmara Izuca
Okay?
Chico Felitti
I'm gonna have the officer that's in contact with him give you a call back. Okay, ma'am?
Zach
Yeah. Okay, thank you.
Chico Felitti
Thank you. The detective called Kat and told her she should go to the police station nearby if she wanted to file a formal complaint. Oh, and to bring Desiree and Leticia with her. Desiree had a bad feeling about the whole thing.
Desiree
I didn't want to go, but I had no choice. I didn't want to confront the authorities or Cat. And even though I had a bad feeling, I decided to do what Kat said.
Chico Felitti
While Kat was inside the police station, an officer came out and asked Desiree to follow him. He offered her water and asked her about her relationship with Katie. Desiree says in her book she stayed firm. She told him they were just taking a holiday together. No one was forcing her to do anything. Two hours later, Desiree said new agents arrived. That's when she realized the real reason they had all been summoned to the station. Law enforcement weren't so interested in Zach's death. The officers were investigating them. Then immigration agents showed up. They took Kat, Desiree and Leticia into custody and drove them to a detention center an hour away. Desiree didn't know what to think.
Desiree
I was trying to imagine what could happen. I felt tears running down my cheeks, but I wiped them quickly before one of the officers saw me crying.
Chico Felitti
Once at the detention center, center immigration officers put Kat and Desiree in the same room. One of the officers told Kat her visa had expired more than a year prior. Kat had been in the country illegally. The officers then turned to Desiree. Her visa had also expired. They put her in handcuffs and said, you're under arrest. Moments later, they did the same to Kat. Desiree noticed Kat's handcuffs did not fall off as she had promised. It seemed like the spiritual entities that Kat had said would protect her weren't there to save her. This was not how things were supposed to turn out. This was not what Desiree had imagined would happen when she decided to visit her friend and guru in the United States. Now she was in jail alone in a foreign country. But what she didn't realize was a turning point was coming soon. She would need to make a choice, one between following Kat or finding a different future. A future that would also require her to answer to her old friend Patty. Follow Don't Cross Cat on the Wondery App, Amazon Music, or wherever you get your podcasts. In Season 2 of Guru: Don't Cross Kat, Wondery delves deeper into the enigmatic life of Kat Torres, a charismatic influencer whose seemingly perfect existence masks a labyrinth of dark secrets and manipulative control. Episode 5, titled "Closing In," intensifies the narrative as the stakes escalate, leading to a dramatic confrontation between Kat and those determined to uncover the truth behind her facade.
The episode opens the day after a police welfare check at Kat Torres' opulent residence in Leander, Texas. Initially, the authorities found nothing amiss, dismissing concerns raised about two Brazilian women, Leticia and Desiree, residing at Kat's address.
Chico Felitti [02:52]: "The call had not turned out the way Simara had fought."
Despite the officers' reassurances, the incident ignites significant unrest on Brazilian social media, drawing attention from followers like Silmara Izuca, an actor residing in Los Angeles.
Silmara becomes increasingly invested in the case after witnessing her friend Leticia disappear under Kat's influence. Her efforts to contact the police yield unsatisfactory results, prompting her to share her experience publicly.
Silmara Izuca [04:03]: "What if it was my parents needing help? They don't speak in English trying to find me here in the US..."
Her viral TikTok post amplifies the scrutiny surrounding Kat Torres, transforming what began as a localized concern into a nationwide media frenzy.
Kat Torres responds vehemently to the negative attention. Frustrated by the persistent police interest and online backlash, she initiates a live-stream to defend herself, vehemently denying all accusations and branding them as products of social media envy.
Kat Torres [07:17]: "Listen, you're fucked."
However, behind her confident exterior, Kat grapples with paranoia and escalating tensions, fearing that her enemies are closing in.
In a state of heightened anxiety, Kat urges Desiree and Leticia to flee, orchestrating a rapid departure to Connecticut under the guise of protection. Their escape marks the beginning of a relentless pursuit that disrupts their lives further.
Desiree [20:30]: "She kept saying things like she was the incarnation of Jesus Christ..."
Kat's control becomes more oppressive as she manipulates Desiree into engaging in illegal sex work, attempting to sustain her lavish lifestyle amidst the chaos.
As Kat and her entourage move from Connecticut to Maine and then Miami, the pressure mounts. Kat's relationships become strained, particularly with Zach, whose dependence on her deepens his isolation.
A pivotal moment occurs when a detective contacts Kat regarding the ongoing welfare checks. Kat coerces Desiree to adhere strictly to her script during the interaction, further tightening her grip.
Kat Torres [21:45]: "You need to help us, there are people accusing me of things I didn't do."
This encounter reveals Kat's inability to maintain control, as cracks begin to appear in her authoritative persona.
Tensions reach a boiling point in Maine when Kat’s volatile behavior leads to a severe altercation with Zach. Her demands and erratic actions culminate in the loss of her beloved cat, symbolizing the disintegration of her carefully constructed reality.
Desiree [23:33]: "She destroyed everything I saw in front of her... It was all because of me."
In November 2022, Kat's coercion and paranoia force Desiree to comply reluctantly with a police summons. The situation rapidly spirals out of control as immigration agents seize Kat, Desiree, and Leticia, revealing the extent of their legal troubles.
At the detention center, the truth unravels. Both Kat and Desiree are arrested for overstaying their visas, shattering Kat's promises of protection through her supposed magical prowess. The episode highlights the stark reality that no spiritual shield could save them from the legal repercussions.
Desiree [26:59]: "I was trying to imagine what could happen... I felt tears running down my cheeks."
This moment marks a critical juncture for Desiree, forcing her to confront the possibility of breaking free from Kat's influence to forge a new path.
"Closing In" encapsulates the relentless pursuit of truth against the backdrop of manipulation and control exerted by Kat Torres. As legal authorities close in, Desiree faces an agonizing choice: remain entangled in Kat's web or seek liberation, potentially facing the wrath of former allies and confronting unresolved conflicts with Patty, Desiree's old friend.
The episode adeptly balances intense personal drama with broader themes of influence, autonomy, and the perilous allure of charismatic leadership, setting the stage for the climactic final installment of the season.
Silmara Izuca [04:03]: "What if it was my parents needing help? They don't speak in English trying to find me here in the US..."
Kat Torres [07:17]: "Listen, you're fucked."
Desiree [20:30]: "She kept saying things like she was the incarnation of Jesus Christ..."
