Foreign Good afternoon Everybody. This is HFPod. We promised you we'd bring you another podcast this week, so here we are. And in in true HF Pod fashion, this short mailbag episode may be our longest episode of all time because we're going to answer your emails and your voicemails and then we're going to share our live recording from the parking lot of the man on on Wednesday that Megan and I Did with some guests who popped in here and there. And then. And then after that, you're going to hear the set from Owls By Day, which is a band where the drummer, Eric Lentz is a friend of ours and they played a set of music in the parking lot right after our podcast. They're playing on August 22nd at Brooklyn bowl and they're also playing on August 9th at Miller Fest in upstate New York. So you should check them out owlsbyday.com if you like their music, which I'm sure that you will because they're really talented. Anyway, that was my long intro. Hey, Megan. Hi, Brian.
Megan
Hey, rj. Hey, Brian.
Brian
Hello.
RJ
We're back. We're back. Are you rested, Megan?
Megan
Not really. I feel like I'm still cooling down. It was so hot in Philly.
RJ
It's.
Megan
It was uncomfortably hot. But it was great. Our event was really fun and I want to thank everybody that came by. It was really nice to meet so many people and just have such great pre show vibes. That was great.
RJ
Yeah, it was, it was amazing. What an awesome time. Um, it's so great to see everybody. I got, I had a lot of conversations with a lot of people and, and if, if you, if we talked and you know, I didn't remember your name. I'm sorry. But I did, I did. Really. I like, I do my best and I love. We love hearing from fans. And speaking of that, you do give.
Brian
Great hugs even if you don't know someone. I can, I can attest to this. So, you know, it's worth it. Even if he doesn't remember your name. The hugs rule.
RJ
Thank you, Brian. Thank you, Brian. I will say, if you don't hear your voicemail today, we're keeping them all. We got so many and it was so lovely and amazing to hear from so many of you all, but we can't listen to all of them or else we would be here all day. And so we're going to listen to like 10 or so and then we're going to keep the others that we don't listen to and we're probably going to do another one of these.
Brian
So we're also going to read an email, right? We are really good email.
Megan
We have a couple. Yeah.
Brian
Before we dive in, you guys really showed up. Like, I had so much joy over the last day or so listening through these, reading the emails and thinking about fish in the manner that you guys all asked about. So huge, huge praise to all of our listeners out here. Please, more of these. It's just Like, a really fun exercise on our behalf.
Megan
Yeah, I agree. It's awesome just to hear from you guys and hear what you're taking from the show and hear what you're thinking about with Fish. It's exciting.
RJ
Megan, is there anything that you want to say before we get into the episode? Is, do we have any special announcements or is there any news? Is there any bulletins or alerts or anything that we need to know about?
Megan
No bulletins or alerts that I'm aware of, but we do have a few shirts left. We have just a few left, and my daughter was selling them on the man lot, and she was taking a hefty 33.3% of what we charged, which just seemed really aggressive, but did make enough to buy a pair of shoes off depop, which is like a teenage thrifting website, which is actually pretty amazing. But she. I have told her anything else I sell that she helps me package up and sell out, she can get it cut from. So if you want to support my teenage daughter's shopping habit, please, please buy a top 25 tourist T shirt. All you have to do is hit me up. Just find me on socials and I'll get it to you. I mailed out a bunch this week. Ryan's going to get his any second now, and it's very exciting. So they're coming. They're on their way, but I think that's it. I mean, we did our live event at the Man. I'm going to be at Forest Hills and spac, but we don't have any events there, so I'll just be hanging out. But I hope people will come say hi anyway.
RJ
Yeah, and awesome shirts.
Brian
Brian, can I just say, the baseball is back. The Cubs and Red Sox are playing right now. First pitch was just thrown out. I'm not watching it because I'm recording the podcast, working on your guys's schedule.
Megan
Amazing sacrifice.
Brian
What a sacrifice. This is what should have been the 2003 World Series. Those who know. No, but you.
RJ
But you actually are watching it.
Brian
It's on in the background. Yes.
RJ
Okay.
Brian
Okay, cool.
Megan
I just want to clarify.
RJ
Okay. All right. So we're gonna go through some. Some voicemails. Megan is gonna do the voicemail stuff because something happened and whatever. Also, like I said, you guys, you know, keep sending in the. The voicemails and, you know, keep them coming because we love hearing them and it's.
Brian
It.
RJ
Actually, I think it made us all, like, really truly appreciative of how many of our listeners out there would you know, still listen and. And still appreciate it because we don't, you know, we're kind of talking into the void. We have, you know, evdude here always. You know, we. And Brian's here, Justin's here. VT to boot is here. As always, we. We have our people in the chat, but then when we send this out on the Internet as audio, you know, we don't know who's listening. I mean, we know generally, but we don't know specifically. So knowing you all get your reviews.
Brian
That'S like a small hint. But, you know, some of you, you know, give us new names. I believe you guys. I know.
Megan
I love. I literally just saw it. Brian. And I have to say, Brian is on screen as Brian Size Queen. Brinkman and RJ brought this up during our live pod, and it got a bit really big laugh. And I am. I'm. I've turned into a size queen, too, and I'm. I'm proud of it. I don't care. Give me the big jams.
Brian
You guys know that you're all waiting for the 20 text message when I send it out. It is. It is. It is. Holy. And I always get a wow from rj, no matter if he's webcasting or not. Wow.
RJ
Because it's. Because it's worthy.
Megan
Always the best. We just crossed 30 minutes. That's my other favorite.
RJ
Yeah, well, I just, you know, if. Scott Gray, if you're listening, I think you. You coined the term on undermine when we talked about 6, 22, 94. So thank you. And, you know, now everyone. Now everyone is back. Everyone's back as a. As I guess reincarnated as the size queen. So that's good. Okay.
Brian
BG is here. To bg. We love you. We love having you in the chat. Do not think that you're not interested. Come on now.
Megan
Ooh. Top 25 tours of the 21st century. A little, like, big picture nod. Brian, we got to do that one.
Brian
Top 25 shows draft is coming in October since 2000. Y' all should be starting to prepare your list. I know. I've got mine. Meg is already stressed even though she can't take 7, 15, 98, or 12. 797 in this draft.
Megan
And I lost the last draft. Let's just be clear. I mean, it was close. It was really close. I probably could have won if I pushed out that. That vote again, but I didn't. So, you know, R.J. got it. It's fine. So I am stressed about the next one. We'll see.
RJ
Sometimes it happens.
Brian
Okay, Megan, I'm on a draft wind drought because nobody appreciates the whipping post. From 10, 23, 85.
Megan
Brian. Deep Cut Sprankman.
RJ
Yep. Very. Yep. All right. And we got the live chat in the corner here. We got all things going today. Okay, Megan, can we listen to the first voicemail we.
Megan
Sure.
RJ
Neil's here. Hey, Neil.
Megan
Yes, Neil.
RJ
Neil is. Neil is so great. I love Neil. Oh, the best.
Megan
The best. Are you ready?
RJ
The best. Yep.
Megan
Here we go. The first one.
Jeremy
What's up, guys? It's Jeremy here. It was so much fun hanging with two thirds of the HF pod and getting to meet Megan, who is, of course, much more famous than RJ at this point. And, Megan, I'm glad your daughter got her simple. But damn, I wish they played a little better for her first show. Same Mercy Macarena 33 years later. It's pretty funny that they thought, hey, let's do that for your daughter's first set two experience. Anyway, I was glad to hear Brian bring up in a previous episode, the 62916 hood, because actually, RJ failed to mention that one when he read my votes on the Hood. Mount Rushmore Rushmore episode. And I was actually texting with him about that too, because I wanted this jam to get an official name. The Manhood. It happened to be actually the first show, first and only show I took my father to. And it was played after Dear Prudence, which is very cool for my dad, who's a big Beatles fan. And then after that, when Hood started, I looked at him and said, get comfortable, dad. We've got about 12 more minutes. And he smiled. So in light of that father son moment, let's make it official right here on the HF pod, the Manhood. Take care, guys.
RJ
What do you think, Brian?
Brian
I mean, that is a. That's a show that is somewhat special. Near and dear to my heart. I played hooky from work. I told my HR manager that I was feeling a bit sick, and she said, oh, yeah, you don't look good. And I sent me home and I got in the car and drove to Philadelphia. I bought a ticket in the lot from a very nice dude on Twitter who I'm blanking on his name, and I sincerely apologize because he was so awesome. And I hung out. I saw RJ in the lawn. I got one of those coveted RJ hugs before the show.
RJ
I was gonna say I think I was at that show, but I couldn't remember you were at that show. Great.
Brian
Hung out with my buddy John we were inside up on the upper deck. And the first three quarters of that show is really, really enjoyable. And then Trey did like Tide turns, Dem Bones, Number Line, something else. It was like a meat stick. It was a horrible, horrible end to the second set. But, yeah, then my two buddies who I was with, John and Rhyme, they decided to leave before the encore and I was like, well, I do have a two hour drive back to Maryland, so maybe I'll do this. And as I was walking towards the exit, I heard Dear Prudence begin. I was like, nope, I'm not going anywhere. I stayed. And then that Hood. Amazing, amazing stuff. Probably the most unique jamming of the entire show. And then I drove home and I had to pull over about an hour and a half of the way back because I was nearly falling asleep on the Eastern shore of Maryland. So there's that.
Megan
Love that.
RJ
That is a good story. Brian Ed with two Ds says that 6 hours 24.95 is the manhood. So, Jeremy, I don't know.
Brian
I think 7194 is the official one. But we clearly. Harry Hood loves the man.
RJ
Yeah. We didn't get one this time, did we?
Megan
No, we didn't. But I will say it was really nice to meet Jeremy, too, and really fun to chat with him and, you know, even though the Macarena, you know, whatever. But it was. It was really fun for my daughter. Like, Gemma loved that because she could sing. She was like, singing along and it was like a fun moment of like, oh, I know this, you know, so for her, it was. It was good. She's a noob, you know, she's. She's. She likes this stuff.
RJ
Yeah.
Brian
I actually really love the Macarena within the simple.
Megan
I'm sorry to report, it was so.
Brian
Well done because you, like, could hear it coming. And then he committed and Trey was. Yeah, it was fun, too.
RJ
I was not upset about it.
Megan
Paige was doing, like, weird synths under it. It was like. It was pretty cool.
RJ
I was gonna tell you what my problems were with that show, but I think we have a recap on Monday, so maybe I'll save that.
Megan
All right.
Brian
I was gonna say if your issues with that show are the Macarena, like, I don't know what to tell.
RJ
No, because I got.
Brian
I got.
RJ
I got something. I have, like, I have things that I saw and I knew it all. All right. All right. Should we go to number two? Megan?
Brian
Let's do it.
Megan
Let's do it.
RJ
We're going to talk about this one. On Monday we're going to talk about that because that it's.
Brian
It's in the running.
RJ
Even though I did. I did go to the bathroom during that. I heard the whole thing and I do think it was very good. But we're gonna. We'll have to talk with Megan about that.
Brian
Did you do that in honor of Megan? Were you like, I'm gonna take a piss break during this song just so that Megan feels good about it.
RJ
Well, I just wanted to be in solidarity with, you know.
Brian
Exactly. That's what I mean. It's solidarity.
Megan
Oh, my God.
RJ
I was basically like, this is gonna be. This is gonna be. See with. Like I said, we're definitely talking about it on Monday. Never mind. I'm not. I'm not gonna tell you.
Megan
Well, I will say that the amount of text and ads I get on. On socials and personal texts I get when they play Rogue now is more than any other song. So thanks a lot to me and HFPOD for that.
RJ
Yep. Yep. Okay. Voicemail.
Megan
We ready?
RJ
Go. We're ready.
Jeremy
Hey, Brian, Meg and rj, it's your old pal Scotty King here. Just reaching out to the hotline to let out some feelings and hopefully let a group of folks know that we're thinking about them. I missed summer tour for a variety of reasons before the birth of my first child. A global pandemic being among them. And I know that the spirit of the POD skews apolitical, but I want to shout out to all the people who can't get out on tour for whatever reasons, financial, personal. But I. I really want to shout out those who aren't out there because Fish is only playing in America this summer. And for many of us, coming to the States or even travel across certain states is just not possible or even safe right now. It sucks, it's sad, and it takes a little bit of joy out of listening sometimes, but that sounds like you know that you're not alone. Take that money, spend it on the live stream. Listen to the shows with comfort and the knowledge, knowing that the band is still killing, killing it. And hold on tight to all the amazing online communities out there, like this one. Thanks to you guys, pod, our ever present tour buddies, for keeping us all connected until we get back to seeing each other in person. Michelle, take care. Be safe out there.
Brian
Bye.
Megan
Love that sentiment.
Brian
That says it. That says it right there. Scotty King, amazing, amazing member of this community. And, you know, I don't really. I guess logistically they probably wouldn't do a run Across Canada. But are some great Canadian cities that you could imagine Fish doing like a week on, you know, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and then Vancouver. Come on. Why not? Can't we just get that? I would. I may not go, but I would webcast it, and I think that they would get at least enough people to justify it. You know, people would travel up for it. That's not very hard. But, yeah, Scotty's right. There's a lot of people that are probably not on tour this summer for reasons that are bigger than just not going to concerts, and that really sucks.
Megan
Yeah. And I also think it's nice, you know, we talked about this with this argument of, you know, you have to be there to get it. And I think it's really nice to think about the fact that you really don't and how many people. You know, most fish shows you do not get to go to. And I think it's nice that Scotty's thinking about that and making us realize how lucky we are to have so many other ways to connect and continue seeing this band. And live streams roll 100%.
Brian
I think that you got it at the man, too, though. Yeah, you got it.
RJ
Well, what do you. Wait, what we got.
Brian
You got it by being there. You had to be there to see that show.
Megan
I got something.
RJ
Yeah, we can. We can't do it, guys.
Megan
I'm not talking about it today.
RJ
Recapping it.
Brian
We're not doing it.
Megan
I have so many thoughts.
RJ
Stay tuned for our recap on Monday, everybody. Okay, Megan, can we keep. Can we. Should we keep going?
Megan
Let's keep going. I'm gonna get faster at this.
RJ
This. This number. This third one is a. Just a quick. A quick one from a three run.
Brian
Homer from the Cubbies. Let's go.
RJ
There you go. It's so nice of Fish to, like, schedule a show in Chicago on the day of a day game. I mean, it's like, what an awesome.
Megan
That.
Brian
Yeah, probably some great vibes in Chicago right now.
RJ
Vibes. You know, it. It's all about the vibes. Okay. I think this is from Ben in D.C. who we met at our live recording. Nice to meet you, Ben. I think this is it. You play it.
Megan
Awesome. Yeah, I'm just waiting.
Brian
Hey, guys.
Jeremy
Maddie P. Long winded and got.
RJ
Oh, no, no, never mind.
Jeremy
Come on. Get some of the cast lot material back in.
Megan
Oh, God.
Jeremy
Sprinkle it in. It's good stuff.
RJ
We need it later.
Brian
That's shortened to the point and directed right at me. I loved that voicemail. I felt that voicemail.
RJ
I mean, don't I have all of them?
Megan
We. We get a fair amount of them. We didn't. We don't actually get a few of them that are really cool.
RJ
Play by play.
Brian
Yeah, we don't get most of them.
Megan
What are your favorites?
RJ
Oh God. Well, rank them 1 to 10 because that's.
Megan
No, just like the. The top best. Like the top 3 or 4?
RJ
3. 3.
Brian
So we do get. Still rarely, but we do get fairly regularly. Turtle in the Clouds, which I absolutely love that.
Megan
Is that number one?
Brian
No, that's not number one. I'm just saying we get that. I would say that these five should return and I don't understand why they're not played on a more regular basis. Play by play. Weird deep seated grooves and great jam potential. Awesome version from. I think it was banger 2019. Everything is hollow. Really cool funk grooves that could lead to awesome jams final hurrah. We get a decent amount here and there. That shit came out of the 47 minute Soul Planet. Like that should be enough to make that a regular jam vehicle. We are come to outlive our Brains is one of the greatest recent Fish songs. Amazing melody, really weird, awesome lyrics. Like incredible kind of Mondegreen there in the chorus. I'm so, so into that song. I wish that we got more of those. And then finally, cool Amber and Mercury. That song has a deep, deep 80s groove to it. I mean, the whole thing at its best sounds like fish channeling 80s synth rock. And I'm totally down with it. I don't know why anyone would be opposed to it, but people have their opinions. I'm here for all the Caswell boxed. I just wore my Caswell box shirt last night. I should have worn it for the podcast.
Megan
Really should have.
Brian
Awesome stuff. I would advocate for those five songs to immediately be put into the rotation and I can very quickly give you five songs that could come right out of the rotation.
RJ
Yeah, we're good.
Brian
Starting with Mercy.
Jeremy
Nope.
RJ
We're good. We're good, we're good. Thank you so much. We need the cane. We need the hook to keep Brian off the stage.
Megan
Everything is hollow. I do. I agree. I like that one. I like that one. But some of the other we are come to out love our brains. I don't know. Turtle in the Clouds is fine, but it's just like. It's like a silly surrealist Fish song. And we've got a lot of those that I like better.
RJ
On Wednesday night, I was with one of my favorite people to see Shows with my friend Liz, who I've seen I don't even know how many shows with. But I was just like every song I would just turn to her and be like, this band is so silly. Like everything about it is just ridiculous. You know, like, it's just so. I agree with you on that front. Although I will say that 12:30, 18 show wouldn't cool. Amber and Mercury open up the second set. And that was a really great set.
Megan
Yes. It's a great place for it.
RJ
I'm not. I'm not opposed.
Brian
More on that show later.
RJ
Not opposed to that song. Okay, can we. Okay. The next voicemail is drift while you're sleeping needs to go. It's so long and so boring. Says ED with 2Ds. That is a take that other people have. And.
Brian
Hi, Ed.
Megan
Yeah, I mean, it's. I have liked that song occasionally, but it's just. I think it's getting played too often now too. It's just like Trey goes to it a lot and it's often a set killer.
RJ
I think it look as a first set. Toward the end of the set. Fine. You know, it's just right.
Brian
If there's 15 minutes left in first set time, great opportunity to go fill up your water. Use the bathroom.
Megan
Yeah. Before set break.
Brian
Settle in for set break. But aside from that, no.
RJ
Get. Get the fuck out.
Brian
Encore 2 because you can hit the road.
RJ
Can I just. Can I just tell you guys something real quick? Just because I just looked at this. It. This is a. This song. That song was only played twice in 2024. Can you believe that? Doesn't it feel like it's played like every other show?
Megan
Wait, that's not true. How many times have been before you're sleeping.
RJ
Yeah, I'm only looking. I'm just looking@fish.net. don't shoot the messenger here. Twice in 2024. A lot in 2023, but twice this year and twice last year.
Brian
Can I. Can I. Neal's the best. Can I respond to that? That you just.
RJ
You don't really need to respond to facts, but yeah, sure. Please, please do.
Brian
There's a reason why 2024 is one of the greatest years of Fish.
Megan
Exactly.
RJ
Okay. Got it, Got it. Okay. Okay. The next voicemail we have is from a first time caller, longtime listener. And I thought we could just like talk a little bit about Forest Hills, which now I'm sad because I can't go, but he has a really cool, cool take on Forest Hills. And so I wanted. I wanted to play this and this is like one of those where, like, you know, it's great to hear from people who've been listening for a long time and are like, fine, because you asked. I'll call in. And then they tell you something awesome. So thank you for calling.
Brian
I agree. I love this one.
Peter
Hey, guys. My name's Peter. It's the first time I've ever called in. I am 71 years old, so I don't know if I'm going to make it onto your podcast or. Knox, I'm sort of blowing up your demographics here. I first saw the band back in 1992. I saw in the Great Woods. They were opening for Antenna. I went, then I went there to see them, and they were great. I got bored during Santana. I know that's sort of sacrilegious, but I left during Santana anyway. So here's my reason for the call. My first concert ever I went to was 1964. My dad took me to Forest Hills to see the Beatles.
Megan
My God, 64.
Peter
And it's a freaking amazing memory for me. I can still remember it really vividly. I could see everything really perfectly. My dad was standing. I sat on his shoulders. I could hear well because there was a speaker system near us. And so it's a really, really vivid memory for me. And it's also a really sweet memory because my dad died young. He died a few years after this concert. Anyway, it's 61 years later. I haven't been back to Forest Hills, and I'm going next week for the first time since I saw the Beatles there. I'm going on night two, and I'm. I'm pretty excited about this. My brother, who did not go to this concert when I saw the Beatles, it was just me and my dad. My brother, who's a casual fan, not as bunch of a fan as I am, he wants to come with me. And I said to him, I said, no, I'm doing this by myself. This is like a solo thing for me. So, you know, you can't do this. You're not coming with me that night. You can come to any other show with me anyway, so I just wanted to sort of relate that story. I was thinking it would be really cool if they do a Beatles song, but I know that, you know, they recently played A Day in the Life. I know they just did Walrus. So, you know, I'm not getting my hopes up for that. But. But anything, anything they do, it'll be. It'll be pretty cool with me. And I'm really Looking forward to this. Anyway, that's my message. I. I really enjoy your guys podcast.
Brian
And.
Peter
See you for ourselves. Bye.
Megan
Wow, that makes me so emotional. What an absolutely amazing story. I. That was the second time I've listened to that voicemail and it's just as powerful as the first time. That's so beautiful. Thank you for sharing that. And I really hope we hear a Beatles song and Forest Hills Night too. I think Guitar Gently Weeps is definitely on the table.
Brian
Yeah, yeah, they haven't played that in a long time. Yeah, I. I came up with a Beatles wish list if. If you guys want, based off of that voice because I was very moved by that as well. That was. That's like. That is the whole vibe of this whole thing. All those memories kind of come together and. Do you want to hear it though?
RJ
Brian? Can I just. Before you do that. I do want to hear it, but I. I saw only three songs, rj. Well, I just. I'm just. Yeah, I'll let you talk in a second, but this is my. This is my addition to the conversation. Thank you. I've seen wildmilled guitar gently weeps four times, including my first show in 1995. And the last time I saw it was the summer of 09, that Hartford show that we have talked about recently. And for that reason, I think that they will definitely play it on night two of Forest Hills, because I was going to be there and now I won't, so.
Megan
Exactly. I hope you guys enjoyed it at msg. They played it at MSG recently, right? Was that two summers ago?
Brian
I'm checking right now.
RJ
Yes, that's right.
Brian
Yeah. Last time played was 8, 4, 23. So we're on.
Megan
Yeah.
Brian
What was that?
Megan
Closed the set, I think 88 shows ago. Yeah, that was close. The set. It was absolutely killer. That was. Yeah. What a fun show.
RJ
Okay, Brian, wish list.
Brian
Really quick. Beatles wish list. This is just three songs.
RJ
Please do. Please make sure they're good songs.
Brian
Well, two of them Fish has never played, but I would love to hear them play one of them. They've played exactly one time, and I would love to hear it return. The first is Taxman. I was calling this On Vegas Night 1, 2004, and older people in my section were like, this guy knows what's up. Because it was two Sexy Sadie Come Back. Pretty much like anything from the White Album, but they played that really nicely. And then three, leaning into kind of the blues grungier with jam potential. Dig a Pony would be outstanding.
Megan
Cool choices. When. I mean, Fish hasn't done a new. When is the last time Fish did a new cover?
Brian
I can find that.
Megan
You know, I feel like I'm always. I'm just be curious.
RJ
Yeah, I feel like it's like golden age or something. But I don't think that's right. They must have played something since then.
Megan
I mean, that's what. That's what I would think the last.
Brian
Cover debut was 10, 25, 24. Box of rain. Yeah, in terms of, like. Yeah, in terms of, like, songs that.
RJ
Jaker's Dozen. That's what Eric Austin.
Brian
Like, songs they've played, like, multiple times. Yeah, I think we.
Megan
No, just, like, even once. Yeah. Baker's Dozen, maybe. Yeah.
Brian
That would be the night the Lights Went out in Georgia, which was 7 hours, 16 minutes and 23 seconds before that was Broken Heart Attack, which everybody remembers from the dreaded 8 14, 20, 22 show. Before that was the dreaded.
RJ
The dreaded.
Brian
Have you ever looked at that set list? Come on. I'm not, like. I'm not that jaded.
RJ
Guys, energy. Greg, nice to meet you.
Megan
Yeah, Greg, it was so nice to meet you. And actually, what was cool is Greg was actually sitting right near us, too. Rj. He was, like, sitting kind of in between where we were sitting during the show. That was really cool. But, yeah, he had really nice things to say to me and my daughter. Really nice to meet you.
Brian
Greg, really quickly, just to Megan's question here, the last cover to debut and be played more than 10 times.
Megan
Yeah.
Brian
Is strawberry letter 23. So to your point, they haven't really brought, like, a new cover into the fold in a way that has allowed, like, the way rock and roll or Drowned or past songs became a part of the catalog. Golden age is a great example as well.
Megan
Yeah, that's interesting. I think maybe they should do that. They can start with Brian's Beatles wish list. That'd be perfect place to start.
RJ
Megan.
Brian
Thanks, rj.
RJ
You're welcome. No, thank you so much. Megan, can you just do number five real quick? And then we'll do number six. Also, number five is something everyone has been wondering about. I'm ready to answer this one.
Megan
Okay. Here you go.
Jeremy
Hey, guys. Maddie P. Again.
Brian
Yep.
Jeremy
Sorry, but inquiring minds want to know.
Brian
Rj, love you, but what are you.
Jeremy
Always squirreling on during these episodes? We see you. You're nothing. Let us know later.
Brian
Gnashing. I love it.
Tyler
Yeah, I know.
Megan
Squirreling away.
Brian
I know what it is.
RJ
I mean, you'll notice right now I'm not eating anything, cuz it's 2:48pm we always record at like 4 or 4:30. And like, I'm just hungry at that time. I'm always hungry at that time. And I'm always eating cashews that I get from Costco and I have a huge bag and they might be roasted and salted. I think they're like sourced from like war torn countries. They're probably not really sustainable cashews, but they are delicious and I eat them every time we record, which is why I like for you guys to just talk and I just. I'm on mute eating cashews because you've got us. I gotta make it through nothing else. I think it's the best snack for if you're recording because you can't eat like, you know, I'd rather have like, rather have like cheddar cheese and Triscuits, you know, but like, I can't like make us, you know, I can't eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Like, you know, small, small, easy.
Brian
Cashews are wild. They, they have the crunch without the actual noise.
RJ
Yeah.
Brian
Without like us hearing you eat like a bunch of chips. Like you would like just, you know, sound like crunching in the background.
RJ
And same with like, Pete. Like, I love, I have peanuts always, like, I love peanuts. But they're like.
Brian
It's like cashew cracks a shell on a podcast.
RJ
Yeah. So that's it, guys.
Megan
I like a dry roasted peanut.
RJ
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Megan
Those are so good.
RJ
That's what we.
Megan
Growing up. Those things are unbelievable too. I don't buy them because I would eat them all. But yeah, I like roasted.
RJ
Yeah.
Brian
It's one of those snacks that I just keep pouring it into my hands.
Megan
I know.
Brian
And then you get full really quickly, but then you're like, no, no, no. I still want more of that salty goodness. It's. It's actually the opposite of Chinese food.
RJ
I might grab some cashews for the library card. According. All right.
Megan
But you know, you guys have changed my whole breakfast routine.
RJ
Yeah.
Megan
Because now I eat peanut butter inside my yogurt. And Brian, now I've reintroduced chunky peanut butter into my life. It's back. It's back.
RJ
I think we, I mean, we definitely need to take credit for that.
Brian
We all talk about fish together and we all impact each other's lives. It's an amazing thing.
Megan
That breakfast will keep you full for hours, like a long time.
Brian
Really special stuff.
RJ
Dan Wegg loves a little snack chat. Here we are.
Megan
I love it. All right, are we ready for sex?
RJ
Yes.
Megan
Okay, here we go. I think I'm getting faster.
Matt
Hey guys, this is. My name is Tyler. I'm calling from Colorado Springs. Just listen to the Manchester Mini. Quick hit. And you guys were talking about Bowie, man. Bowie. I just want to. Let me go on a rant for a second.
Megan
Do it.
Matt
Humor me. Bowie was my favorite jam vehicle if I had to pick one for the. The bulk of Fish's career. And it's kind of disappeared, as we all know, as far as an actual jam vehicle that's going to go places type 2. All that and I became a fan of like around the year 2000. But I didn't see my first show till 09, the Hampton Run. And I've been waiting since then for Bowie to go somewhere. And Brian kind of mentioned like maybe they're, you know, they're trolling at this point or, or maybe they just. They literally don't see Bowie. Is that that kind of song anymore? I don't know. But I, and I'm not the guy to do it. I wish that I could offer a complaint and a, and a.
Brian
A response.
Matt
To what we should do, but I remember back in the day when, when stuff. When fans wanted things to happen with the band, like they made flyers and handed them out or they, they found some way using the Internet to communicate their, their desire to the, to the, to the band. And maybe the band still didn't do it, but when the time came, or maybe they trolled a little longer but when the time came they. They usually always answer the bell. And so I don't know. I'm putting this out there for the mass group of fans that listen to helping friendly podcasts. Let's do something about this. Can we do something about this? I don't know what we could do and, But I think I don't know of a single fan that I know that I've talked to that doesn't want Bowie to be there again. Whether it's opening the second set or, you know, in the third quarter, whether they close a first or second set with it and, and take it outside the structure and it becomes that where, when they play Bowie, you expect deep things to happen. Who knows?
Brian
Maybe.
Matt
Maybe there's nothing we can do. Maybe no one believes this like I do. But come on, guys. One, if I got one 25 minute type two Bowie, I could die in peace. So thanks for hearing me out. Maybe this is just the, the jaded. The jaded Bowie fan of me speaking, but man, that song is so good. And when they, when they Want to go there with. Has the greatest potential of any jam song, in my opinion. And you can go back to tons of them in the 90s and 2.0. And so anyway, that's my rant.
Megan
I mean, I put on Blue Sky. Jambowie, you cowards. I don't know what else. I feel like I'm doing my part. I feel like we're doing our part here, talking about it on the pod all the time.
RJ
I just want to let you know that I did my part the other night by going to the bathroom during Bowie. Because you see, you look out there and, you know, I'm sure they could see me like, brian Good on the webcast. And they saw that I just, you know, they started playing Bowie and I just walked away.
Megan
You know, they're like, oh, he's leaving. We're gonna jam this for a little bit.
RJ
We need to know. I was. Well, maybe that. I was thinking maybe they would be like, I can't believe he's. I can't believe he's leaving. We must not be doing this. Right? But then they kind of jammed it a little bit.
Megan
They jammed it a little bit. They played Caspian inside of it. That was exciting. For a few minutes, I was excited, but I. I do think the entryway back into Bowie was really jarring, and maybe that's why they're not doing it.
RJ
See this, like Bradley Gordon said, be the change you want to see in the world. You know, that's kind of what. That's my attitude. But how are we going to do that?
Megan
A mass walkout, Ev dude says.
RJ
And he also says, we need to get Drew Fish in a room with Trey, which is true. That's probably the most effective potential solution here. It's sad, but some songs just need to, you know, take a break, you know? Right, Brian?
Brian
Yeah, 100%. I think someone should bring a sign and they should pass it to someone who's going to the next show. And it should be a successive thing. This should be a part of the community that just simply says Jambowie or shelve it. And every time there's a break in a song, just raise that. So it's just a constant thing that Trey sees and he gets in his head, and he'll probably talk to Patrick Jordan and be like, what do people talking about? And Patrick would be like, oh, here's what's going on online. They're all like, bowie used to be one of the greatest jam vehicles in the history of jam vehicles. And now it's like, this rote. 10 minutes in the middle of a first set. Type of just, hey, we wrote this 40 years ago. Here it is. We're just going to play it. It has none of the mystery or intrigue that it once had. Look man, I think Bowie and Slave should both be shelved unless they are willing to really lean into what those songs really honor their legacy, honor their history. We've got other set closers, man. We don't need this. If you got. If you guys heart isn't in it, Jam it or shelve it. I do just want to note there four recent versions I would recommend that have inspired so much of the conversation around here about potentially jamming Bowie. Because they've gotten close. Like they've hinted at it. It's not as though they're not listening. They just haven't fully gone there. So anyone out there who wants to dive into some recent magic around Bowie 22320 from Mexico. That version rules. 8 12, 2022 the best version that RJ has ever seen. And by default probably the best version I've ever seen. Even though it happened during the Alpine. Dicks 22 run 12:29 22 opens a fantastic second set and is mysterious and a little bit murky and dark and 7 hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds during what I would consider the show of the year so far that Bowie happened teased Caspian did some really wild and phenomenal things. I think that the show was elevated by the Bowie even though it didn't go all the way there. I yield my case.
RJ
Thank you Brian.
Megan
That was exciting. That was an exciting part of that show.
Brian
San Francisco 25 Eric Austin here. That was a great version as well.
RJ
Can I just.
Megan
It's getting there. It's the beginning.
RJ
I have a couple potential solutions. I think if we can get the dude with sign, you know, to hold that sign up.
Megan
Oh well, we could just. Yeah. Make it look like he did.
RJ
Yeah, that's true. Or we could just. Can we just send him a message and say jam it or shelve it and like have him go to a fish show?
Megan
I love that.
RJ
Okay, Neil, I'm going to steal this jam it or shelve it thing and apply it to another popular jam band. The sentiment needs to be standard thinking for people who write set lists. Wow. I don't know what band.
Megan
Can't imagine.
RJ
Probably.
Brian
Look, there are ways to get to the band.
RJ
Yeah.
Brian
I'm often thought about the fact that at Dick's 2018, Trey stepped to the mic and said, hey, I met These girls yesterday and they requested this song, so we're going to play it now. And they played Shade. And I was like, cool. You met Trey Anastasio during the middle of a dicks run and you requested Shade. You could have requested a jammed out David Bowie.
Megan
I have a similar story when I was in Europe and someone saw Trey and Trey bet him if he jumped off the bridge, they would play the song he wanted. And he picked Makasupa Policeman. So we heard it that night. So, you know, there's like the worst people who run into Trey. Like, what is happening? What are you doing to us? Do better.
RJ
You guys know I have that. I still have that MP3 of Trey saying, if I really want to know what's happening in the fish community, I listen to the Helping Friendly podcast. I bust it out like once every, you know, year, just. Just for fun. So if that's true, this. Try Bowie. We got a jam. Bowie. There's no. There's like, after that sand the other night, which we will talk about on Monday. I mean, why can't there be a 40 minute Bowie?
Brian
Is the reentry that important? Like, who cares?
Megan
I don't even care if you go back to it. Just don't even go back to it then. I don't care if it's unfinished.
Brian
Re entries have we had that, like, are out of key and completely rip us out of like a 25 minute jam. Nobody cares about the re entry.
Megan
Just nobody cares.
RJ
Don't listen, Trey, what we're saying is you do it however you want. But if 40 minutes would be good. 28. 28 would be fine.
Megan
Even hitting like 18 would be at least. We'd be like, we'd know they were trying, you know, like, that would show effort. That would show effort, which would be exciting.
Brian
19 minutes. I don't require 20. Just give me like six minutes of dark weirdness in the middle of Bowie. Like the man Bowie from 95. Come on.
RJ
All right, the size queens have spoken. And speaking of 18 minutes, we're more than 18 minutes in, so we're going to take a quick break and then we're going to finish up these mail this mailbag episode. Be right back.
Brian
You know that one friend who somehow knows everything about money? Yeah. Now imagine they live in your phone. Say hey to Experian, your big financial friend.
RJ
It's the app that helps you check.
Brian
Your FICO score, find ways to save.
RJ
And basically feel like a financial genius.
Brian
And guess what?
Megan
It's totally free.
RJ
So go on, download the Experian app. Trust me, having a BFF like this.
Brian
Is a total game changer.
Dean

RJ
Okay. Should we. Should we take the email. The email one now?
Megan
Yeah, let's do that. That sounds good. Also, I just want to point out, I can't believe that you didn't see, like, a good bowie in the 90s, RJ.
RJ
Yeah, I know.
Brian
This was part of his defense on E13 22.
Megan
It's just still interesting. I mean, whatever. I saw, like, an amazing boy my first show, so I got very lucky.
Brian
But I saw him yell at, like, six different people on Twitter who were like, you saw fish at 1.0. He was like, yes, and I didn't see a good Bowie. And. What is wrong with you? How do you not understand what I said?
Megan
He, like, released the list.
RJ
I did eight. 1097 is the best argument in favor of the people who were yelling at me.
Brian
But although that's mostly the intro. Yeah, that takes up a huge. Which, you know, sorry, I feel about this. I still feel words out of your mouth here.
RJ
No, it's okay. We're good. We're good. Okay. Okay, we have three points from Travis from Fairfax. Brian, I know you have notes. I think. I think the number two one is hardest. Are we going to try to do all three of his questions or should we. Should we wait?
Megan
I don't think I realized this was all from one person.
RJ
Yeah, Travis. Travis. Three thoughtful questions. Yeah. Okay.
Megan
I think they're all pretty awesome. At least the first two I think we have to talk about.
RJ
Okay. All right. Thank you, Neil, for mentioning that you were at Providence 94. I didn't know that. Thanks, Neil.
Brian
I actually think we have to talk about all three because I have notes for all three, so.
RJ
Okay. Brian. Brian is notes. All right, so we'll see where we get to with. With the mailbag, because we are going to. We are going to share the audio from the Owls By Day show right after we finish this episode, which everyone should listen to. Because they're awesome. Okay, first question from Travis from Fairfax. It feels like there's always one or two songs that suddenly get the reinvention treatment. Out of nowhere, they become jam chart contenders. Most recently, my friend. My friend has taken a new life after years of being a straight ahead tune. What do you think could be the next quote, new, old song to get that treatment? A few that come to mind. Julius. It's Ice or Yamar. What do you guys think? That's a good question.
Brian
Yeah, I was thinking about this because I was looking through the last couple years of songs that have stayed relatively close to home but have hinted at exploration. So they haven't taken that step. Not like a back on the train in Seattle type of situation. Or Timber in recent examples, although those could potentially fit. My prediction is free.
Megan
It has been sounding really good lately.
Brian
It's been sounding really good. There's like four or five versions in the last year and a half, like going back to the sphere that have expanded what is possible within that. We know that it has some versions in 1.0 that jammed out in 2.0. Trey and Mike got obsessed with doing duels every time they played it. Which was. Was fun until it wasn't. But like, that, like, thick groove they keep falling into in jams works perfectly in freeing. Could lead to, like, a really cool. I guess there was a version from Blossom 2022, so I'm kind of stepping all over my theories and predictions and ideas here, but that's my pick.
Megan
But how long has it gone? I don't think it's gone super, super far. Atlantic City 22, I think, had a really good one too, but I don't think any of them have gone 25 minutes.
Brian
And Blossom. Yeah, just now.
Megan
Yeah, but that's. Yeah. So it's gonna.
Brian
21. RhinoStorm is just hitting me up right now with all.
RJ
Yeah.
Brian
So I.
RJ
That's what he's here for.
Brian
Freeze my pick. I'm holding to it.
Megan
Stick to it. Okay. I had a few. I think Punch you right now is really interesting to me. I just. They're stretching this intro so much, and I think it'd be really cool if it just went super far. Like, what if they just jam the intro to Puncher punchy for like 20 minutes? Like, it's just been. I think it's been sounding really great. So I'd be excited to hear like an old Gamehead song go really big like that. I also think. I mean, we were just talking about it, but I also think Slave, you know, if they really thought about that, like, it's only been jammed. It hasn't been jammed that many times. And really only type 2, like, really once or twice. And I just think that would be an incredible. It has incredible potential speed, especially with how emotional they're playing right now. Like, I think Trey is just playing. So with his, like, the way he's playing his guitar right now, I think they could really just kill a slave jam in a way that'd be really, really cool. Those are my picks.
Brian
Jam it or shelve it.
Megan
Yep.
RJ
I'm just. I'm just gonna keep it. Keep it real here. And I'm just gonna say bounce around the room because I think it's going. I think at some point it's gonna happen. And that's just, you know.
Megan
You know, that's the sixth most most played song.
Brian
Yes, that makes sense.
Megan
How crazy is that? I mean, I guess from the 90s, but. Yeah, that was my other choice too. RJ. I just feel like, oh, they should just open a show with it or open the second set with it and just do something huge. People would lose their minds.
RJ
Yeah.
Brian
I mean, yeah, that was on my list of wants. I don't. I don't see it happening, but I want it to. That. That last riff extended that out and then like, turning it almost Dave's energy guide and then jamming it. But my want remains the same since 2009. Stealing time from the faulty plan. How we have not gotten, like, multiple jam charted versions of that song. Yeah, made the jam vehicle. If you told me when that and Kill Devil Falls debuted that Kill Devil Falls would be the jam vehicle and Stealing Time would just be this.
Megan
Like, never would set those, or I.
Brian
Would have been like, no, this is, like, totally going deep. It's got, like, darkness, chunky grooves. Like, come on. Why. Why have we not gotten at least one 20 minute stealing time? I don't understand.
RJ
It's been played once per year for the past three years, which is insane.
Brian
Probably because there's nothing that they've tried to do with it.
RJ
It's wild. Okay. All right, you guys ready for number two?
Brian
Yes.
Megan
Yeah. Let's do it.
RJ
Pretend Fish didn't record and Release everything since 3.0. Okay, that's first. Now you're the official fish archivist. Brian and Megan, I know this is so exciting for you guys. What shows would you prioritize for the first round of official releases? I think in terms of round, let's say three. Can we say that a three is around now, Brian? Says no. I'm especially interested in under the radar picks like 81912 at Bill Graham. The show that pulled me back in thanks to that incredible Cross Eyed into Light into Sneak and Sally into Cross Eyed to Open Set two.
Brian
I mean that's a great show and that would definitely be an option. I came up with two lists thinking like Fly Fish series. One is the must haves and the other are the deep cuts. Meg, do you want to go first so that you can share yours before I ever do this?
Megan
Yeah, sure. I have, you know, it's hard for me to conceptualize like tire fish history. So I have a list of just shows that I've always wanted them to release. And you know, I think that I'm excited to hear what everybody else says. So of course we need Big Cyprus. I also think we need the Moby Dick show. I we only have five official releases from 2000. That to me is just insane. We need more of those. I also want to hear 123193 from Wooster. Just need that. I also think we need. There's just not enough from 99 released. So I just want more of that. I also selfishly want Europe Summer 96. It's not. The shows aren't incredible, but it's such an interesting moment in time. It's such a transition moment for them and I think it'd be cool to hear those shows released. I also think I would definitely put 81215 from the man because somebody brought that up during our live pod yesterday and I was looking at that show again and that's such a cool show. And I also think that one show.
Brian
That somebody drafted it.
Megan
Yeah, somebody did. If it wasn't released already. I think the 81511 from UIC, I was thinking about that show because they're playing there this weekend and just such an awesome second set. So those would be some of my choices.
Brian
Those are nice picks. Those are nice picks. I. So I interpreted this question as just since the start of 3.0 because released everything as soundboard. So I thought about this as the last 15 years operate the way that 1.0 did, where you trade tapes and you have some of your favorite shows and then the band then selects like certain shows the same way that like Live Fish the first two batches came out and you were like, oh my God, this is what the band's curating.
RJ
I agree with all of. I agree with all of Megan's choices and I want to listen to all those shows officially.
Brian
All those shows are great. All those shows are and they all should all be released. 1231. 93 should be released with 1230 93. Great box set. Come on, where is it?
RJ
Yep. What's going on?
Brian
So I was just thinking about 3.0, 4.0 in terms of must have. These are the first six shows you have to release, and I had some deep cuts for our email. So the must haves. 872009. That show is way, way ahead of its time. And the jamming throughout, it is unbelievable. 7 3, 11. I think this is one of the three best shows of early 3.0. It has gimmicks, it has jams, it has amazing flow. It has great narration from Trey. 8, 12 15, the man. Amazing. Very, very expert level fish show. 12 30, 18. I think this and fuck your face show are the two best shows of all of 3.0. 7. 2823. This is my favorite show from 2023, and in some cases, I think probably the last truly, truly great show the band has played. There are no flaws in that show. Huge jams, huge song calls, amazing flow. And then 2:23 from Mexico to highlight the really deep, wild jamming in the chalk dust. Plus there's great flow throughout that show. Those are my must haves. Okay, before I say my deep cuts, what are you guys thoughts?
Megan
Oh, that 72823 show. Oh my God, that was such a moment. After that first set, I just remember walking in the concourse at MSG being like, what? Everybody's job was just on the floor. That was such an incredible show. And here, here, 12:30, 18. That show blew my mind in the moment and continues to.
RJ
If we're. If we're saying that there's like, without this, there's no releases, you know, officially, then the only must haves I would add or just I would throw out there immediately would be. Well, I mean, the must have. Are we. Are we talking like 8, 31, 12?
Brian
Well, RJ, how long do you want this question?
Megan
You also have to have 12, 30, 19. Like, you have to.
RJ
Okay, well, I just want to. Let me just say. Let me just say two that I would do because they're. They have two of my favorite because.
Brian
I could take consideration Dick's 2012. That's really. Since box set. That's all I'm gonna say.
RJ
Okay. A box set is different. Okay. I would just. I just want to throw out there 10, 20, 13, and 73115 would be. That would be the two that I would say I matter the most. Maybe 8, 7, 15 up there on that list also.
Brian
So those are my. Those were in next up.
RJ
Okay.
Brian
I had. I had a really. I. You wanted a longer list or do you want. This is as short as I could get.
RJ
Okay, go ahead with the next list. Whichever. I forget how many lists there are. Let's just go ahead.
Brian
This is the deep cuts. This is for our guy who said he wanted shows that nobody talks about as much anymore. So I came up with a list of six of those. So this would be your live fish 7 through 8 or 7 through 12. Those first two releases were so amazing for a noob like myself. Anyway, Deep cuts going through 3.0, 4.0, 10, 1910. Really excellent set list. And amazing Like Buckery within songs where they were chopping things up and they were replacing stuff. It was very much like a fall 94 feel and it just like helped to push the band forward. 5, 2, 11. This is an outstanding, complete show with jams in weird places. Excellent, excellent set list. Excellent flow. 6, 15, 12. This second set is like a full complete piece. Y' all know how much I love segments. I'll even overlook the fact that they opened set two with my soul because the jamming in that second set really previews where they would be by the end of the summer. Which would be the dicks 2012 run. 8, 4, 13. I don't really ever hear anyone talk about this show. This is probably the best played show through 2013 in the early 3.0 era. Flawless, huge execution. 22220 Mexico. Outstanding show. Nobody talks about it because nobody remembers that they played before the pandemic in 2020.
RJ
I was there, dude.
Brian
You were there. You were there.
RJ
I remember it. I will. And I was actually the closest I've ever been. I was. I was right on the rail for that show.
Brian
That show has so much like old school energy and great jamming throughout it. I love it so much. And then finally 7, 23, 22 from Bethel. It's my favorite show of that year. My favorite jam of that year is the set yout Soul Free within that show. I think it has some really cool random song calls early. My friend. My friend. Jam. And second set is just like flowy, weird fish madness that I can't get enough of.
Megan
That's a list. We need to put these out.
RJ
That's quite a list, Brian.
Brian
I have a lot more. I've got like a box set list here. I've got a next up list. This was the most fun I've had thinking about Fish in a long time. Thank you so Much.
RJ
Brian, send me the. Send me the list so I can put in the show notes.
Megan
It needs to go in the show notes.
RJ
Okay. All right. We're still doing this. You guys ready?
Megan
Yeah, let's go.
Brian
I love this one.
RJ
I don't know how many more voicemails we're going to get to because we've been talking for so long and. But we're going to see. We'll see what happens. What is your dream themed show? You know, in the vein of the Bomb Factory Tweezer Fest, the Vegas numbers show, Land of Chocolate and Hershey, the Moby Dick show, or the S show at Dick's? I'm casting my vote for a sparkle segue fest where set two repeatedly, repeatedly collapses into laughing, laughing, fall apart.
Megan
That's so fun.
RJ
Wow. I love that.
Brian
I love that idea. Everything speeds up really, really quickly at the end of each jams. Almost like the Moby Dick show. That's nice.
RJ
Megan, what do you got? Do you have thoughts?
Megan
Yeah, I mean, I think. I do think that a show that opens with bouncing around the room and just goes into a huge jam and then just keeps returning to that theme would be really fun. I also think a show that's all like t show so starts with. Opens with Take the A train because that would just like people would lose their minds if they played that again. And then they can play like a huge tweezer and they can end the show with Tweezer reprise. And just in the middle, they could play so many songs because they. So many songs that start with the. So they could just play a million songs they want to play so good. I mean, hopefully not a million. Hopefully they just play like four. I also like really want them to do another cover album for Halloween. And I'm open about what it is, but I just. I miss that.
Brian
That's good.
Megan
I just miss that. I think it's so fun and I think it does really cool things for their jamming and I just. I think it'd be fun for them to go back to that. So that's a wish of mine.
RJ
Yeah. Wow. Brian, what do you have?
Brian
I got a couple. Want to hear them?
RJ
Yeah.
Megan
Yeah. That's what we're doing here for sure.
Brian
A single song set show. So basically three songs in the whole show.
Megan
Yes.
Brian
Please, come on, just try. It could fall on your face and fail, but I think you guys can do it. All non jammers jam. This was similar to like what Jam filled but like by the end jam filled was all like fuego and cross eyed. Were already jam field goals. So let's just see what happens when like the bouncings, all that sort of stuff. Jam out a studio album show. Let's take one of our studio albums and play that in order across the show and jam and have some fun. Rift. I don't really care what it is, but like just that's your structure for the whole show is however many songs on that album in that order. All cover set list. They've done a lot of non cover set list. Trying all covers. Just pick all the covers, play them together a single year show. So songs from that debuted a single year. Give us like your 97 show. Give us your 93 show. You know what I mean? And then finally, this is like very much jam band nerdery type of stuff, but someone send Trey a classic fish set list from a existing show and they play that setlist in reverse. So like, if you were to play. If you were to do like 11, 17, 97, you open with character zero and work backwards all the way to tweezer at the end.
Megan
That would be so trippy. I like it.
RJ
Those are all such great. Both of you guys have such great, Just great ideas. I don't know. I. I guess I'm just gonna. The one that I would throw out there that I think is like, like possible because I think you could maybe talk Trey into this would be like an evolve first set and then another album second set. So like you play all of evolve in the first set and then. Or you play game engine the second set. Like.
Brian
Like the game hoist shirt.
Megan
Yeah, like game hoist show. Yeah, that'd be so sick. Or I love how you're like, we could talk Trey into it because Trey, you can play all the ball. That would be like the game.
RJ
Hey, stranger. You could play Mercy. You could play either edge. You can play ether edge. Not at the end of the second set. You could play somewhere else.
Megan
Yeah.
Brian
How about we take Mercy off the list?
RJ
No, Mercy's great. Mercy is great.
Megan
Not that bad. It's just like we weren't ready for a cooldown because we were 30 minutes into the set. But it's fine.
RJ
I thought, I thought it was. I thought it worked fine. You know, I, I if. Well, we have to talk about it on Monday.
Megan
This is hard.
Brian
The cool thing about the Reversa classic set list is someone would realize it online and then.
Megan
Yeah, that would be super cool. Yeah. In the moment.
Brian
People would be like, wait, what do they. And I just. I can't believe they haven't tried Something like that.
RJ
Okay, here's, here's something that I want to throw out there for next for our episode on Monday, which is going to be a recap of the three shows that we haven't heard yet from Chicago and the two shows of the Man. Here's a question for you guys that you can. Fans, not you, Brian, because you'll answer right now. And this, this is probably figureoutable on, on statistics, but have there. I was looking@the fish.net ratings of, of Tuesday and Wednesday at the man and the, the discrepancy between the ratings is like, it's notable, you know, for, for obvious reasons. But do you guys think it's more common to have like this kind of like, you know, a 4.6 show followed by a 3.8 show? Or is this like was, was, were those two shows, the discrepancy between them abnormal? So I want to hear what people think because I think you can look at it both ways, but maybe it changes. It's changed year over year.
Brian
Good research opportunity. Thank you.
RJ
Yep.
Megan
Yeah, that's fun.
RJ
Fun for Megan, who was there on Wednesday. Um, okay, happen.
Brian
We've all done it. We've all been there.
Megan
I mean, I knew it was going to happen. I knew it was going to happen. It was okay.
Brian
I feeling when you go in like, man, they just played a great show. Like this is either going to work out or it's not. And then when it starts to nut and you're like, I knew it. I fucking knew it. I'm not even mad. I just knew it.
Megan
I knew it. It's fine. Yeah, sometimes it's not fun to be. Right?
RJ
Right. Yeah, that's true. That's so true. Definitely that, that's definitely true. Okay, should we listen to like, like maybe those last. Those number seven and eight, Megan, or should we keep going? What do you guys want to do?
Brian
How many more do we have?
RJ
Well, we have, we have five more, but two from one person. Which is which? This happens sometimes. People leave a message. The max is three minutes, then it gets cut off. So this is like a five minute message. And then we have a few others.
Brian
From my notes, the one that gets cut off, I would love to do that one. I have some thoughts.
RJ
Well, yeah, basically because it's for you.
Brian
Well, yeah, sorry. Sorry everyone. You know. Yeah, but the others, what I was going to say is like, I have very quick responses too. That's the only one that I have like a long.
RJ
Okay, well let's do number seven and eight. Should we do Seven and eight and then. And then address them.
Megan
Sure.
RJ
Which is like, you know, that's like, you know, it's about three minutes. So everyone just buckle up, get some cashews.
Peter
Ah.
Scott
You'Re doing the call in show. So I felt like I had to call in. Be honest, I love the show. Makes me kind of nervous to do these voicemails, but I always mean to and I forget or get distracted. But I'm mad. I called once before. I did the HF pod episode in 2014 on 725 99. And I joked last time that Brian is so young that maybe that's where he learned about that show. But I assume that's not true. But I am curious if Brian learned about. Learned more about that show from that episode or if that episode or that podcast had any influence on his love of the great 7:25:99. No worries if it did. Not just kind of curious, but I actually have two points about your most recent episode. If I'm not going to be cut off. First, I didn't even. You guys. You didn't say it outright, but I sense some exasperation with Petrichor, and I just am a. I actually was at Columbus, my 92nd show, and I've been chasing Petrichor, and I got it and I was thrilled. And I actually used to blog under the name Solar Garlic Band, and I wrote an essay called don'ttte my petrichor bro, because I feel like we should encourage Trey's capacities to write these really epic compositional numbers, even if they don't work. And I think Time Turns Elastic definitely doesn't work so great, I will admit that. But I actually think Petrichor is. Is beautiful in parts and is just an exemplification of something no other jam band does, including the Grateful Dead, including Goose, writing these really technical, complex compositions. And I think that's one of the things that sets Fish apart from every other band. And Petrichor really has some gorgeous and also very complicated parts. You know, some of it in Columbus.
Jeremy
Was a bit rough for that reason.
Scott
But I think they should play it. And I was so excited to get it. And I actually hope that Trey will write more of these types of songs. And I actually think, like, Drift While youe're Sleeping is a small example of this kind of style. And I love it. And I know everyone else does. Everyone else does not. And it can be kind of a downer in the show. But, you know, I think there has to be a space in these concerts for these kind of complex compositions. Second point, I couldn't agree more with you, that the jamming this tour has really been about getting into these grooves and, like, just sitting there. And the word that. I've really appreciated patience.
Megan
Do you want me just to play eight? Because that's the rest of his, right?
RJ
Yeah.
Megan
Okay.
RJ
Okay.
Scott
This is so lame, but I got cut off because of blanks and I'm calling again.
RJ
What happens to Brian? We just don't cut him off.
Scott
Go through my second point, which is, yes, the jams this tour have been all about kind of sitting in these grooves. And the key to me is that they're really being patient and they're really kind of also, like, really being quiet and listening to each other and letting these groups develop. And I couldn't agree more with Brian. And also Megan, I think, really highlighted the Manchester twist for really, like, exemplifying that pattern that's really developed the whole tour. And I just wanted to point out one other jam that I feel like wasn't talked about much, but it was actually just. Oddly enough, it was the plasma from Austin628. And that one, if you relist and just get super quiet and super patient, doesn't even really go type 2. But it just really develops in an incredibly kind of delicate, quiet, patient way that I.
RJ
That I really love.
Scott
And you actually could hear that continue into the second set, because that was the first set plasma. And so, yeah, I'm enjoying that style and the jams this tour, love this show. I'm sorry if you played both of these. It's a lot for people to listen to. Love the show and keep up the good work.
Megan
Bye.
RJ
All right, Brian, what do you say? Where do you start?
Brian
Well, I want to just give quick shout out to Matt, who ran the Solar Garlic blog. I apologize if you still are. And I'm not acknowledging it in the present tense, but I read that a lot in the middle of 3.0. I thought he was always. He always did an amazing job of writing, like, kind of just off the periphery of what the larger part of the fan base was talking about online and backed it up with excellent research and insight into the band. And he also had way more musical knowledge than I've ever had. I learned a lot from his blog. I got a lot out of it. So really cool to hear from him. I did not learn about 72599 from his appearance on HFPod, but it did help to reinforce what I thought about that show because I was early in the HF Pod Lifecycle. And at the time, the entire premise of HF Pod was someone would come on, they would recommend a show, you guys would talk about that show, and then you would play that show. And there was always something very special about, oh, they're talking about this show. And then sometimes it'd be like, oh, they're talking about this show. But you know, when they talked about those shows, you were like, you perked up and you were like, this is getting kind of the HF Pod badge of approval. And so it definitely reinforced for me that it was a very special show. And I still don't know why the hell it's not released. I will just say quickly. I learned about that show in the spring of 2010. I was reading Mr. Miner's blog every day. He was posting like crazy during that period in time. And he would always do this fantastic thing where at the end of each blog post he would highlight a underrated show that was on the larger spreadsheet and he would provide a download link. And I was living in South Korea at the time. I had amazing Internet access and I had a gigantic external hard drive, like literally physically gigantic. And I was downloading all these shows, I was organizing them and I was learning so much more about the band because I'd had such a falling out after Coventry. And I remember hearing this show and being like, what the fuck? This is how they started this show. Like, meet my friend, my left toe whipping post. Like, and then you get like the Corota stuff and you get, I mean, just amazing. Amazing display of fish jamming fused with fish gimmickry fused with an absolutely classic second set. And I remember hearing it and being like, this show has to be heard in pristine soundboard to be fully appreciated because this tape is a little bit muddy. So I've always loved it since then. One last thing. Sorry. Pitch clock. Hahaha. Petrichor. I don't know how many times I've seen it, but I've always really enjoyed it. There's one segment in the song that I wish they would remove, which sounds like Christian rock. You guys probably know the section I'm talking about. That section can go itself. The rest of it is absolutely gorgeous and really awful and really inventive music. And I remember I say a lot of about the Alpine Dicks 2022 run, but the version of Petrichor they played midway through set one of 813 while the rain was pouring outside of the pavilion is one of my favorite, like, attendance bias, live music experiences. I've had with Fish. I know that show is not very popular. I really love that show and that Petrichor is a big reason why. So, yes, it should be appreciated more than it actually is. I agree.
Megan
I actually really liked that part and I. And I'm taking that really to heart because I talk a lot of shit about petrichorn Time Turns Elastic, but it's just because I don't think that he's found a way to incorporate it into a Fish show in a way that increases flow. And I'm hard on it because of that. But I do totally agree that. I agree with Matt 100% that we should encourage Trey to write like this. And that's why he is the way he is and that's why this band is so amazing. And I think that he's right about that. So I feel a little bad. I feel a little ashamed about that. But. But I definitely still don't want to hear Time Turns Elastic regardless.
RJ
Well, maybe you'll get a jammed out Bowie and a Time Turns Elastic. What do you think about that? That'd be a good trade off.
Megan
I don't know. I'd have to see what the rest of the show look like. Okay, fair enough to sign off on that.
RJ
Yeah, speaking.
Megan
Yeah, exactly.
RJ
Ruin my segue. God damn it.
Brian
I'm sorry. I just had to respect, like, she's asking for it and then she's like.
Megan
Oh, but what about inside of Bowie Jam? Like Bowie Time Turns Elastic Bowie. How do we feel about that?
RJ
That's interesting. If it's a whole set. Yeah, I'm in if that's the first set.
Megan
Right.
Brian
I mean, jamming Bowie would be making Time Turning Elastic. And I'm just here to say the Labyrinth is one of Goose's greatest songs. And. No, I'm sorry. So here for it. So.
Megan
Talk about a killer. My God.
Brian
This is the band that plays. So ready. Come on.
RJ
Okay, so I think first of all, we are. We are going to. We're going to. We're going to keep the ones that we didn't. That we didn't already play. Okay. We are going to do more of this. We are going to be back on Monday. Yes. To talk about five shows. We might do a couple voicemails because we have to get. We. I mean, we have to. Because we don't want these to go to waste. So that's partially why I feel like we have to keep this going. So we're going to do that. We're going to be back on Monday and right after this, you're going to hear a set of the band Owls by Day. Osiris this is Lawrence Lanahan, journalist, musician, and host of Rearranged, an Osiris Media podcast about music arrangement. Once a song is written, arrangers make musical decisions that shape how we end up hearing the song. We're not just talking about adding orchestral accompaniment like horns and strings, or doing a cover version of a song. Arrangement can be putting happy music over dark lyrics, using samples, recording all acoustic, even tiny decisions like putting an electronic loop into an acoustic song to draw your attention to an acoustic important turn of phrase. It's all arranging. Rearranged Episodes are documentary essays where I use arrangements to answer some big questions like what is a song and what can a song become? And how can the sound of a song change the meaning you take from it? Listening this way has changed my relationship with music. Tune in to Rearranged and maybe it'll happen for you too.
