Nothing's happening. We are here for another episode of Mount Rushmore. It's a Monda green, which is perfect for Megan. So that's partially why, why we're here. Welcome back everybody. We are, we are back on Mount Rushmore. We are chiseling away. We got, we had an interesting one today. I got some thoughts, got some thoughts about moma dance, Mount Rushmore. I hope you guys do too.
Advertiser 2
I got lots of thoughts. I got lots of, lots of vibes, lots of thoughts, lots of energy. I'm excited. Let's get into it.
Megan
Brian. The breaking news today is that there is a new live bait that was released today. I didn't even know it was released when you, when you texted me, it seemed like you knew.
Brian
I didn't either.
Megan
The moment that it came out, somehow the moment ends.
Advertiser 2
I knew, I knew everything. I was, you know, eagerly anticipating the new live bait and then it came out and I'm wondering about curation. You know, some good moments. I'm really stoked. The 112491 yam is on there. 12196 Reba. You guys know how I feel about 12 196. You know, it's part of what sunk me in the last draft because nobody listens to that show, which cool.
Brian
I hope I appreciated that Reba in the moment because that Reba is awesome.
Advertiser 2
You know what? Me too. I really hope you appreciated it and I don't know if you did, but.
Brian
I really hope I probably didn't I probably didn't. 96. A little hazy for me at times.
Advertiser 2
Little hazy. You know, that's. That happens to the best of us. 21 years ago right now, I was a little hazy walking into Thomas and Mac center with a couple of chocolate treats in my hand that would make the balcony melt to the floor, convince me that Fish was laughing at me, and then absolutely blown. And then, you know, log online to have people be like, your favorite experience that you've ever had your entire life was actually one of the worst experiences in this man's history. And I was like, cool. I'll just go back to listening to Dispatch and Oar.
Megan
Technically true, though. Technically true.
Brian
Very, very technically true.
Advertiser 2
All right, let's talk about the experience I have as a Fish fan.
Megan
Let's talk about the live bait as it relates to the New Yorker article. Because, you know, this.
Advertiser 2
Is that what this episode's about now?
Megan
Well, it is for now. I like that. The 101598 hood, also that that was on there. I thought there was some good releases on there. But my main takeaway from the New Yorker article about Fish, which, you know, as we talked about, there's. Most articles about Fish have the same kind of backstory, a lot of the same anecdotes. You know, Trey kind of same narrative stories. Yeah. Same arc. Everyone loves each other. Trey likes writing songs.
Brian
Fish is lame to everybody else. But then by the end of the article, the journalist likes Fish and doesn't hate on.
Advertiser 2
What a framing device. What a framing device. Oh, my God. Christ.
Brian
Do you not read the other profiles and are like, oh, this is going to end up being the exact same or not? I don't know. It's kind confusing.
Megan
Well, I'm not going to talk. I'm not going to comment on that, but I do think that we should talk about the. The Kevin Shapiro appeared. I think that that might have been like the only article that he's ever been quoted in. He's. He's rarely. He's rarely in front.
Advertiser 2
Yeah, he's rarely in front. I mean, I think he's in. I think he's in like a small part of the Fish book. But outside of that, like, you didn't really. Unless you are engaged with the Fish online community. I don't think that the idea of like the band having a dedicated archivist who was a dedicated fan who is now curating their archive alongside of the band, I don't think that that's like a well known thing outside of people like us and people online talking about.
Megan
Them yeah, well, I mean, basically, as it relates to Live Bait, the point is where he knows exactly what, what he's doing and what he's sitting on there. That's all I'm saying. He's like, you know, yeah, everyone wants Big Cyprus. And the reporter was like, interesting. So anyway, Trey got arrested 2006 driving up the New York Thruway.
Brian
It's not only that, dude, it's like, everyone wants Big Cyprus. And he's like, and we have the tapes ready to go. Like, he also said.
Advertiser 2
He's like, yeah, like, tell me about this Big Cypress. Yeah, I just got to say one thing because I got a pulpit right here. We have an extremely accomplished music writer in the fish scene who knows a ton about this band's history. So much that he has written about every single show that this band has performed since February 3, 1993. And this person also writes in a manner that is incredibly unbiased. His handle has crit, as in critic in the. His. His Twitter handle or whatever site he's on at this point in time. He is not just going to like gush over Trey melting his face. He's going to give you a very detailed, non biased, colorful, insightful perspective on this band. I don't know why people in the Fish universe are not calling Rob Mitchum and flying him out to the barn and giving him the. That all of these not even fish, curious people who know how to write about music are getting. Like, I don't understand why we're not starting with the parameter. The Fish is one of the most transformational, inspirational, boundary pushing artists of our time. And that's not why we're writing about it. It's almost like we're saying, like, have you ever looked at a Monet? Like, up close, looks like shit. But after I spent 12 hours looking at the Lily Pads, I realized that maybe there's something there. Let me tell you about that experience in 45,000 words.
Brian
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
Ridiculous.
Brian
It's offensive.
Advertiser 2
Get Rob Mitchum, budgetless trip to do whatever he wants with this band for six months and then write a profile about it. I don't understand, but it's.
Brian
That's the thing is that like, that would be an insider. And there's this view of the outside media that nobody inside is fucking smart. It's just true. They actually think that. And that's why the articles are always like the same ridiculous comments about patchouli and weed and, you know, wooks and explaining terms that are just so seem demeaning to the environment and so It's. To me, it's indicative of just a complete unawareness and an ignorance of the intelligence within this community. But you know what I liked about the article? Two things that they all cried in each of their interviews. Like, these guys are just so in their feelings, and I love it. And the other thing is that now I know why 1229 was fucking good. Because they did the Never Vary exercise, this new exercise that they tried out, going back to the old tricks. Maybe they should try that before 12:30 this year. Just an idea. Or the last day at Mondegreen when you have to close down a festival early. Just try one of these old exercises, because that show ruled, and now we know why.
Advertiser 2
Can I ask you a question? Do you think that they did that exercise before 7? 15, 98?
Megan
All right, so thank you, guys for those thoughts and for your. For your opinions. Okay, we're gonna keep moving here. We got. We got. We got too much to discuss. I got two voicemails. I. I'm. I. I do. I do want to, like, appreciate our callers, even though we are, you know, we do have an agenda, but I. Can we listen to Dan from Canada? Dan from Canada seems like a good dude.
Brian
Yeah, Just going forward. Yeah.
Advertiser 2
I don't even have time to say anything, but, yeah, let's go, Dan from Canada.
Advertiser 1
Oh, Ghost got caught up with the. The Light and Rock and Roll episodes of the 40 or the. The Mount Rushmore. So listen to your old series. And, yeah, it's been great. And I kind of came to a realization about Light after listening to the. The episode there because, you know, I'm a 3.0 kid. I started seeing fish in 09, and my first show was Bonnaroo. I think we got a Light there maybe the second night. And, you know, I've always been a defender of the newer material. Like, I usually like it, but after listening to a few of the versions of Light, you know, I hadn't really listened to it in a while, Was a great version at Mondegreen that I was lucky enough to see this past year. But, you know, I just realized after listening to some of those, you know, it leads to great jams, but I just cannot get into that song. I don't know why, but yeah, so you guys help me come to that realization. So thanks for that. And also, a fun thing about the Rock and Roll 1 is, you know, I saw a lot of shows from 09 to 2015, and it kind of rock and roll just felt like it was, you know, always kind of there. And it sometimes jam, sometimes it didn't. And I didn't really realize how rare it had actually become. So. Yeah, love that song. And like, I'd like some more, but anyway, thanks. Hope you guys get to see lots of fish this year. Like I said, I'm from Canada and, you know, my wife and I got tickets to SPAC this year, but we're not gonna go because, you know, being from Canada, it's just the whole situation. But hope you guys see lots of fish and rage out and maybe they'll come to Toronto again. Who knows? All right, have a good one. Bye.
Brian
Oh, my God, Dan, that's awesome. And that makes me so sad. I was just talking to a Canadian friend I have the other day about how hard it is to go over the border now, so fuck that. Sorry, Dan.
Advertiser 2
Yeah, that sucks. I know that RJ's appreciating all of our callers. You guys know who I am at this point in time, I got to pick a little bit of a N. I do find it really funny that Dan listened to an entire episode of us talking about Light and then asked us to explain why he should like the song Light. I. I would argue. And this is no, no fault. No, no, no shade. Like, it just may not be. It's. It's a very deliberately, like, up with people, very positive energy type of song that Trey and Tom wrote with some really abrasive chords at the beginning of it that Lee usually leads to great jams. Dad rock, maybe it's very dad Rocky. It may be your thing, it may not. I think if it didn't have the jam at the end of it, it probably would not be celebrated the way it is, but that. Such is life. Yeah. We're going to talk about a wave of hope at some point too, you know?
Megan
Yeah, I don't. I kind of agree with. I mean, I understand where he's coming from with the song. I think it is the jarring beginning. Also. Also, I do think going back to the. The Mount Rushmore versions, like it is celebrated as a jam be. But it's not. There aren't that many, really. I don't think there's that many.
Advertiser 2
I mean, there are way more jammed out versions of Light than non jammed out versions of Light. Like in the total history of the song.
Megan
I'm kind of with Dan. I'm just kind of with Dan, that's all.
Advertiser 2
You. You don't like the song?
Brian
No, I remember there's a big difference between More and Light according to rjp. Huge massive Difference.
Megan
There is totally different songs. I mean, we won't, we won't have a chance to talk about the best versions of more on this series, unfortunately. But I don't know. I, I, I guess I'm just saying I understand where Dan's coming from.
Brian
No, I totally get it. It's very honest. We talked about this during the episode. Right. We got into this, like, it's. Yeah. It's not evocative. It's not mysterious. It's not poetic. It's just pretty much what it is.
Megan
It's.
Advertiser 2
This is how I feel. This is why I feel it. This is what I'm going to do about it. And that was like Trey's mantra for four years.
Megan
Well, I guess I'm not referring to the lyrics. I think Wave of Hope is a musically much more interesting song than light.
Advertiser 2
Interesting.
Brian
I agree with that.
Advertiser 2
I don't know if I agree with that.
Megan
The opening riff is great. The, like, the way, the structure of the verses in the chorus, I like. I think it's so. I think it's more like that just the way it starts. Then it's like, whatever, we're not here.
Brian
I like a Wave of Hope.
Megan
Me too.
Advertiser 2
It has grown on me because it jammed really well. I think that it is kind of Monster Jams, my first protest song.
Brian
Yeah, we all have them.
Advertiser 2
We all. We all have them. You know, everyone was like, I want to write a song like it's the 1960s. And now because of our episode.
Brian
And now because of our episode, Dan thinks that way of light. So we did it. Yeah.
Megan
So. Okay. But EVDUDE says hall of fame batting average. Absolutely. That's true. It's a jarring intro, that's all. Let's just leave it at that. Let's talk about the MOMA dance. Megan, can we. Let me talk about last week.
Advertiser 2
Announcement to make. I'm sorry, there's.
Megan
Oh, is there an announcement? What happened?
Brian
Oh, no, I was hoping.
Megan
We just.
Advertiser 2
Talked about. These things happen. We have to have conversations around them.
Megan
Rj, Are they releasing Big Cyprus?
Advertiser 2
No, we voting after our last draft, and we have a winner. You have to announce the winner. You have to come off mute.
Brian
He doesn't even.
Megan
I'm pulling up the results so I can announce the winner.
Brian
Okay.
Advertiser 2
We not have enough votes in yet.
Megan
Yeah, it's. It's a little. It's a little messy. Okay. With 41 of the vote, actually, you know, let's start from the other side. With 23 of the vote, we have Brian Brinkman, 23.4%. Base level 30, 35.1% of the vote. You have me 41% of the vote, Megan. So there you have it.
Brian
All of us, we're pretty close.
Megan
Not close enough.
Advertiser 2
I gotta say. I'm just happy for everyone out there who loves 71598 so much. You guys, you guys got your. You got your girl, you got your fish podcast. I'm happy for y'all.
Brian
I thought you were coming around on 715 98, Brian. Or you just don't understand it, but you're recognizing that people like it.
Advertiser 2
I accept that people like it. I don't understand why it was released in the first 20 live fish shows.
Brian
Okay. And you think 12196 is better than 715 98?
Advertiser 2
Yes. It has flow and big jams and.
Brian
Great. You're not really into like a song that never jams in the ever. Just going so hard in the first set and being like, just fucking super cool. You're not into that?
Advertiser 2
I'm into that. But that's like six minutes of a four hour concert.
Brian
Yeah, Setu's great too.
Advertiser 2
Is it?
Brian
Anyway, anyway, I think it is, but that's why I won the draft. But it's okay.
Megan
It's okay. What do you think, Megan? What is the show that put you over the edge here? Cause I'm looking at the chart now.
Brian
And I think Ventura 97 is just a very popular show. I mean, that's like a fucking classic show for sure.
Advertiser 2
I think that's a very popular show. I. That's another one I don't totally understand, personally.
Brian
I also think having. I think also having 10, 16, 21, you need like a current show that was sick in your list, you know, to kind of like, yeah, show.
Megan
Yeah, no, that's why, that's why I picked the show with the third longest jam of all time, which also was from 2021 on the northern California.
Brian
I think that was right. But I also think. I think 12, 194 is like. I mean, I think people love the 8-19-12. Like, this is a good. All these shows are really good and well liked.
Advertiser 2
Hey, I don't think 102321 is good at all. I don't think 421.92 is good at all. I actually don't think most people have heard it because I got text messages from a couple of people who were like, so why'd you pick 42192? And I was like, are you serious?
Brian
Wait, the fact that I didn't get either Eureka or Anaconda. I actually thought I lost this draft before the third round, and I was like, you. If you listen back to the episode, I was sweating it hard. I was like. Brian was seeming really confident. I was, like, seeming really fudgeing nervous. And I was kind of freaking out because you guys had both taken things that I wanted. I really wanted the evergreen show. I really wanted Anaconda or Eureka, and I was getting really nervous. So I don't know. I mean, we all have great lists. I think they're all very close.
Megan
Okay.
Brian
I don't know.
Advertiser 2
You're just. We're just making more drafts for Megan to win. That is. That is the goal of this podcast. Every. Every draft we have going forward is just Megan on in. She's like man city from earlier this decade. You know, I'm proud of you. I'm happy for you. I'm happy for everyone out there who loved 7:15, 98. You guys ruined. This is for you.
Brian
Oh, my gosh.
Megan
Megan, can we talk about the moment dance now?
Brian
Yeah, let's do it.
Megan
What do you want to tell us?
Brian
I kind of want to tell you a bunch of stuff about it.
Megan
Okay, great.
Brian
I'll try to do it quickly. But, you know, this song debuted at the opening show of Fall Tour 1997 as a different song. You know, it debuts as this instrumental Black Eyed Katy. And this song was such an important part of my favorite encore I've ever seen live. I mean, it wasn't 10, 16, 21 Carini, but it was 12, 30, 97, and that was actually the seventh and last time that was ever played. And then it comes back in denmark in on June 30, 1998, and as the MOMA dance. And it also has Trey doing a special dance. You know, it's kind of fun. And this song was written by the band and Tom and has what I think are some of the most evocative lyrics that this band has ever written. So open to interpretation. I mean, this could be a song about sex or it could be a song about sailing. We don't know. It's kind of the opposite of light. You know, it's not on the nose. It's a Monda Green, which we all have a word for now, which I didn't really know. But to me, this song is fish at its sexiest, its funkiest, it's most sultry. This is my jam. Obviously, it kind of has to do with my ridiculous Instagram handle, but the reason that started is because my name is my private Instagram, and My family was very adamant that they did not want to be on my public socials, and so I needed some sort of a name. And I was dancing one time and my friend was like, oh, you're doing that. That groove you do. It's something I do, like when I'll dance like no man's or something like that, that has, like, a groove. And she's like, oh, you're doing it. That's the Megan dance. And so that's kind of how it came from, but also is good because this is one of my favorite songs, and this is one of those songs that I was thinking about it. It's always been played since its debut, it's played every year, so it's consistently been in the rotation and it's been played 204 times. It only has 32 entries on the Jam chart, which is pretty low. It's like a 15% likelihood of jamming. But that's why it makes it so exciting when it does. And I think why, as we're going to talk about today, so many of the great versions aren't in great shows or great years. Because this is a song they're so comfortable playing that they can jam it even when they're not in the pocket, I think. Which is interesting, right? Not a lot of songs, probably that we're going to talk about in this series are that way, which I think is really cool, and I'm really glad that we're talking about it because of that.
Advertiser 2
Yeah, I think that's all really well said. I'm curious how many of our listeners will make this their new favorite Fish song since you're, you know, hosting the Mount Rushmore episode. But that's neither here nor there. We'll leave that to the next group of voicemailers. This song, I think. I think that the point you made about, like, the jam vehicle versions are rare, which makes it really exciting when it happens. But they happen enough that when it starts, you kind of have to think to yourself, like, oh, maybe it's coming here. It has this feel to it that is very different from a lot of other Fish songs in that it is specifically rooted in a sound of the band past, which is that cow funk groove of 97. Like this song, is there any other tour where a song debuted and the song sounds like that tour before the tour fully got going? Like, no, I don't think so. And then, you know, this grew into, like, a set show opening song. In late 1.0, I took on this very trusty number two slot. Song in 3.0. There are so many songs or so many shows from early 3.0 that are like Chalk Dust, MoMA, ACE DC Bag, MoMA. It was kind of like a way for the band to, you know, unveil where the show is going to go and what the band was feeling through their music in a way that, like, okay, cool. It's a Choctaws moment type of show. It's not going to be super crazy, but it's going to be pretty solid. Was always kind of the feeling when this would happen in early 3.0, but since then, we get versions that are, you know, just moma. These, like, fully fledged funk vehicles, like Mondegreen's version, which wasn't like a type 2 jam, but did, like, bubble up into. I think it's like, 13, 14 minutes long, or, you know, it can be this shocking jam vehicle, which we're going to talk about a few of those here today.
Brian
Yeah, it always has, like, a certain timestamp. It's either like 12 or 13 minutes or 17. You know that those are, like, the two times when it actually stretches out a bit. It's so weird how they're always like that.
Megan
Yeah, you said it.
Advertiser 2
Yeah.
Megan
It's been played every tour, every. I feel like it's played pretty much every show. At least every show that I go to, it's played.
Brian
Yeah, totally.
Megan
And it's, you know, it's fun. What's your. What. What era would you guys take if you had to take one era of Mama dance? Of the four that exists.
Advertiser 2
I think I would take Summer 98, which are kind of the most in the pocket, standard in quotes, versions of MoMA dance, but also seem to really showcase the song at its best in terms of it as a jam vehicle. I mean, I think that 4.0, 4.0 wins everything, guys. It's just the best era. It's why I drafted three 4.0 West coast shows in the last episode. This. This period rocks. And, like, give it 20 years, and people are gonna be like. I was like, they were a 5.0 fan. Like, everyone's going to want to be a part of this.
Brian
A 5.0 fan. I really am in to 2.0 momas. I just really love listening to them, and I think they're. They're a little bit more diverse, and their. Their jams, and we'll talk about some of them are so, like, delicious and memorable. So I'm. I'm really into the 2.0 moments after this exercise.
Megan
Hmm. Yeah. That makes Sense you are, Jay. I mean, I would just take like the current era because it's. This is like, you know, an era when non jam vehicles can be unpredictable and prominent in ways that, you know, some of the other versions are from earlier are. But, you know, now you could get like a 20 minute moment dance and that's possible. Well, so EVDUDE says the best jammed versions are definitely in 2.0, which means that we have what? That's four. That's three. No, there's four possible that you could put on Mount Rushmore. Megan. So if you put all 2.0 jams on there, that would be maybe.
Advertiser 2
Well, new 2.0. Girl loves her winter 2003. You know, she's just.
Brian
I know I'm changed.
Advertiser 2
Who doesn't? Who does? Well, a lot of people didn't. People now do because they've been endorsed. You know, everyone's free now to love 20.
Megan
Okay, so, Brian, do you have anything else to say or can we hear Megan's first. First pick?
Advertiser 2
One of our questions in the doc about these songs is thematically, what does the song say about Fish? And I don't want to give any more unnecessary praise towards the New Yorker Fish article, but what I will say is that Fish, this song proves that Fish can groove no matter what the skeptics say. A lot of people hear the idea that these like, white dudes from Vermont cannot groove. You should really listen to some of these, like, late 90s MoMA dances because. And Black Eyed Katie is like. It is as like it is their commitment to being in the pocket vis a vis a song. And I think that that is a very overlooked aspect of this band's accomplishments.
Brian
Totally agree with that.
Megan
Yep. That's fair. That's fair. They don't need to play it every.
Advertiser 2
Glad. It's fair.
Megan
They don't need to play at every show or at least every show that I'm there. No.
Advertiser 2
And that's.
Brian
What do you. Do you not like the mama dance? Rj? I'm. I'm sensing like, shade vibes. What's that?
Megan
No, it's fun. Totally fine. Like, not. I think it's a totally fine. I think that that's. That's what I would say.
Brian
Like, out of all the songs that they're going to play that might not jam, this is a good song. Like, they have a lot. Fish has a fair amount of songs that don't jam that are just okay. And this to me is a song that probably won't jam, but is good. Like, you're Going to dance to it. It's going to feel good. It's making you feel happy. If you're like, outside, it's awesome. That's my. That's my pitch.
Megan
So. Okay, I'll just say this. If you take the. My. The tops, this top six songs in terms of the number of times I've seen them, four of them are songs I really want to hear every time. And two of them are songs that are just fine.
Brian
Yeah. What's the other? Just fine One. Besides, what's the other?
Advertiser 2
Just fine.
Brian
Awesome.
Advertiser 2
Oh, awesome.
Brian
Yeah, I totally agree with that.
Megan
But like, the others are Tweezer Hood, Antelope, Chalk dust, bathtub gin, Great all day. I mean, Antelope kind of like Antelope.
Brian
I don't know. Antelope to me is a little on the edge for me, but. Yeah.
Advertiser 2
Well, I think. Because I think I feel similar to RJ than I do Megan. Zero shade. Meg, this is not because you just keep winning in drafts. This is just my honest, non biased opinion. When it starts in a particular slot in a show.
Brian
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
It sometimes tells me what show is coming and it feels as close as you could get to fish playing a standardized set list where, like, if you. If you hear it in the second slot, you're like, oh, so you guys aren't trying to like, bowl us over tonight. You're just. You're playing a rock show and that's okay. Like, they do that. And sometimes those shows evolve and sometimes versions like this. We're gonna talk. I'll mention one of mine that, like, I was pretty when it started and then by the time it ended, I was like, oh, hell yeah. This is one of the best versions that they've ever played. BG here has a comment. I think this is interesting. They've played Momo more than two. That's not right. Those two songs kind of serve similar purposes. And I definitely. Tube is more my thing than moma.
Brian
Well, tube is a little more interesting. Cerebral.
Advertiser 2
It's a weird song.
Brian
It's John Fisherman song. It's like a. Yeah, it's like a weird song. Moma is a little more like smooth, groovy, sexy. Yeah, I get it. You know, I'm just here to represent those vibes.
Advertiser 2
I'm here for the nerds. I'm not here for the groovy, sexy stuff, you know, that's just look at like. Like, what are we doing?
Brian
That's why we're good co hosts. We balance each other out, you know?
Megan
Well, Megan, why don't you co Host it up and tell us your first Mount Rushmore nominee.
Brian
All right, is everybody ready?
Megan
Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Brian
Okay. Oh, yeah. Okay. So for this first one, we are skipping over a few. Quite a few. One for our Canadian friend Dan. We're skipping over Toronto, which is. Maybe. We'll talk about it. But it's short. It's so fiery. I love that version. That's not going to make it onto Mount Rushmore. For our first Mount Rushmore, we are going to HF Paw's number 10 tour of all time. This is one of my favorite jams from that tour and one of the best shows of that tour. We're in the middle of set one on February 26, 2003, in Worcester, Massachusetts. The groove that they land in in this jam is so textured. It's this abstract, detached funk. Talk about cerebral and cool, but still so groovy. It's supremely danceable. It almost hits like a disco vibe. It never builds to a peak, but I kind of love it for that. Like, it's just. We don't always have to peak, and it's got a super smooth transition back into the song. So that's my first chiseled moma dance on. What do you think?
Megan
Yeah, I think that's. That's. That's the first chronologically that I would. That I would nominate as well. I mean, I think, Brian, you've done a great job of curating the.
Brian
Yes.
Megan
The jam charted versions of these songs, and most of them. Most? No, just. I'm just saying most versions of it.
Advertiser 2
Was just a compliment. Great.
Megan
Most versions of this song before February of 03 are just fine. Like, I think almost all of them are.
Brian
Just the Toronto one is pretty sick, but it's. It's short, but it's good.
Megan
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
Yeah.
Megan
That's probably the one exception for me.
Advertiser 2
I consider 624, 2000 on this list. I ultimately, as well, went with 226 in this spot. I think that you're right to do it. The groove that they get into, we did an episode on this on beyond the Pond many years ago, and we compared it to White Denim and their songwriting choices. And it does have, like, this indie rock shag to it that I love a lot. When they get into the jam, it sounds like moma, but doesn't sound like moma.
Brian
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
And that's a very cool thing because it uses. It's almost kind of like how when Golden Age finally figured out how to break out of the Golden Age groove, like the Golden Age groove was Always so infectious that, like, Trey just wanted to play that for like 13, 14 minutes. And then at some point he figured, like, okay, we can move beyond this. And when that happened, we got these great versions like Vegas 2016. This kind of reminds me of that for MoMA dance that, like, finally it figured out a way outside of MOMA dance.
Megan
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think this 226 version is awesome. Mike. Mike is like, really pushing, pushing it, which I really like. And I think getting out of the structure of the song is like you said, Brian. That's like, that's part of the point, you know?
Advertiser 2
Okay. So sometimes the whole point to get out of there.
Megan
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
See what else. See what's in the unknown.
Megan
Yeah. I'll tell you. I'll tell you what. Can tell you more about it from this New Yorker article.
Brian
If you guys want to read your corporal self.
Advertiser 2
Whatever quotes that was. That was.
Brian
I'm just glad. I'm just glad she got the Mon Degree. Yeah. I'm just glad she got the Monda Green, the Woodlands Jam. Like, I. I appreciate that she appreciated that because that would have been annoying if she didn't, because that's.
Megan
Yeah, she did a good job. She did a good job. She did a good job. I mean, you know, I mean, she's.
Advertiser 2
One of the best music writers in America, so, yes, she did a very good job. Like, this is not her first time doing this. I just don't need 19 paragraphs telling me that the majority of the country doesn't like fish. I know. I've had conversations with people.
Megan
Well, not only do we know every.
Brian
But everybody knows that. Like, that's the thing. Even if we aren't the target audience. Like, my parents will read this article and they will know most of what is said. My parents who are not the argument.
Advertiser 2
That I am not the target audience. I'm so sorry. Like, do we need, like, the Spielberg New Yorker piece to be like, you think he's corny, but actually he's one of the most successful directors in the entire world in all of film history. But let me spend the next three pages telling you why people think he's corny. Everyone fucking knows that parts of Spielberg is corny. That's like unaccepted part. That's what you come in here for. But the motherfucker created Dinosau. Like, what are we doing?
Brian
Yep.
Advertiser 2
Sorry. Continue.
Megan
I, I.
Advertiser 2
Okay.
Megan
All right, we're gonna. Here, here. Let's put our. Let's put our ideal New Yorker profile subjects onto our next. Onto the agenda for our next something we will.
Advertiser 2
We should draft. We should draft fish articles. Fish.
Megan
I was talking non fish.
Brian
I know, but.
Megan
But we're getting back to drafts.
Advertiser 2
Draft of like. Like subjects for paragraphs that music writers use to write about. Fish yells at you because you're talking. And French the timers. French bread, pizza.
Brian
The outfits, people wear songs.
Advertiser 2
What's with the, you know, like the vacuum cleaner? What does the drummer wear?
Brian
Dress Donuts.
Megan
All right, Megan, we gotta get to number two here.
Advertiser 2
We're gonna.
Brian
Okay.
Megan
Where everyone's gonna die.
Brian
Okay, so for number two, we're skipping over one version, which I really like from Shoreline movie soundtrack vibes. I'm into that. But we're skipping over that to one of my personal favorite versions. This is a place that I take my kids every summer to ride roller coasters and eat hot dogs and people watch. Coney island is a super weird and special place. We're going to go to the middle of set one on June 17, 2004, on the beach in Brooklyn. And we're going to go here because Trey just goes off in the beginning of this jam. It is so inspired right from the jump. Very rocking initial peak. The jam is layered and epic sounding. But then, yes, Evdude knows, it's becomes this like, militant, driving, like, authoritative riff, and it just gets stuck in your head. I had this and one other version stuck in my head all week, and it's so sticky and just absolutely commanding. And you cannot deny this version. So this is our second Mount Rushmore, June 17, 2004, Brooklyn.
Advertiser 2
It's the right pick. That's the right pick. That. That shoreline version you write is great. I love it, but that, like. Oh, my God. Come on. Come on. God.
Brian
Give me crazy.
Advertiser 2
Give me it.
Megan
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
RJ, are you going to say something nice about 2004 fish or should we just move on to the ad break?
Megan
No, this might be the. This might be the highlight of the entire month. I think it's the right. I think it's the right call. It just, you know, it's the right call. It's right. I mean, the space.
Brian
Okay, good.
Megan
Space, space, noise, dissonance. It's. It's great. It's a good jam. And I'm. And it's. I mean, you know, just. What a wonderful tour. What a wonderful month. You know what? Really good. Everything was going great for Fish at that time. And I don't have anything. Anything negative to say about June of 2004. I know, I know. I've been. I've been. I've been sat down in, in various places and made to listen to the boogie on from Alpine. And you know, it's like, you know, you got to hear this, man. Spec. Piper dude, it's the shit best. It's fine. There's like three things that are good about that month. The rest of it sounds like a band that is on a train that is about to hit a wall, which is actually what happens. Spoiler alert.
Brian
So just read the New Yorker. You'll find out all about it.
Megan
But. But this jam is good and I, I think it's the right call. We're. We're, we're like two for two for two or whatever. We're all on the same page so far.
Brian
Are we okay? I'm sure it will divert soon.
Megan
We'll see.
Advertiser 2
I don't know.
Megan
Gotta stick around to find out. Brian Eczema isn't always obvious, but it's real.
Brian
And so is the relief from EBGLIS.
Advertiser 2
After an initial dosing phase of 16.
Brian
Weeks, about 4 in 10 people taking EVGLIS achieved itch relief and clear or almost clear skin. And most of those people maintain skin.
Advertiser 2
That'S still more clear at one year with monthly dosing.

Megan
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
Which is to say a death march.
Megan
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Okay, so I think we did the break right there. It's really great. Megan, you got to keep going. You're still on.
Brian
Okay, I gotta keep going. I'm ready. Okay, great. So next we are going to. We're going to skip quite a few years. We're going to jump way, way ahead to 3.0. We're going to go to what I think is the best version of MoMA Dance. We're going to go to the third night of a three night run, the second song in the second set at a venue I am going to for the first time this summer. It's definitely not a great show. 12 songs in the first set, 10 songs in a second set. But they find the MoMA dance at July 3, 2016 at Spack. And this is an amazing journey. It is over 17 minutes. It's a textured groove jam to begin with. It gets really interesting when Trey gets on the effect pedal and there's this edge to the sound and Paige gets on the piano and Trey climbs this really, really edgy peak. And once again, very similar to the 04 version, he finds this really dark riff that he repeats as he climbs. And it's so dark and edgy. And then as he gets to the kind of the. Almost near the crescendo of the peak, he switches over into his natural tone and the crowd goes crazy. And as he's peeking, he's trilling and Paige is really quietly on the piano doing that dark riff on the fucking piano. It is so incredible. And I also had this in my head for many days this week, and I love it. Then it goes into this contemplative section. Mike drops a bunch of, like, bass bombs. And Trey's like, really hopeful and beautiful. They get into some spacey shit. Paige fucks around with that, and then they settle back into this mellow, jazzy groove where they started. And this is a complete full circle jam. And my favorite, my favorite moment.
Megan
It's really good. I would put this on there, too. It's. It's definitely a different, like, kind of version that Trey's like That chord vamping that Trey does is really awesome. That builds that, like, darkness. Like, unlike most versions, it gets to like a pretty intense, you know, kind of like they build the tension there and never really leaves the structure of the song, but. But just builds this tension and then it like slowly and. And patiently turns blissful and then there's like a easing toward the end. It's not like it doesn't. It doesn't do what like trade does sometimes now, which is like we're going to like ram back into the song, you know, like after it's.
Brian
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Megan
Like suddenly, like we have to go back right now. It's good. Really good. It's very. It's very patient and. And really cool. Yeah.
Advertiser 2
So this is a gray version. However, this is where I diverge. This was on my Rushmore until last night.
Brian
And I. Wow.
Advertiser 2
Really debate with this and one other version. We'll talk about that in a little bit. I agree with you wholeheartedly. This is amazing version. I do just want to give a big shout out. You know, we. We do the media thing here. Okay. But it's really challenging because it is our hobby, not our job. And we're not like being, you know, financed the way a media company that talks about the state of the world would be, you know, because, like, people are just casually hanging with us and that. That's the way it goes.
Advertiser 1
The.
Advertiser 2
The ideal circumstance, if we were all in a position where we could all do this would be guy writes a fish.net review and that. That guy then. Or girl. Excuse me. Okay, just a guy. Just in general. The.
Megan
The.
Advertiser 2
The non gendered guy. The. The, you know, that person comes on HF Pod later that day to talk about their article and they defend it. We critique it, we praise it, whatever. There's only one time I can remember this has really worked out the way that it should and was based on this show. It was Craig Hillwig. He wrote a devastating but brutally honest review of 7316. It got eviscerated online because people were like, what is it, man? You don't have any fun, man? What your problem, man? You don't like going to fish, man? And he was like, no, look at the setless. Listen to the way this band played. And he came on HF Pod defending himself. And it's one of my favorite, you know, the review hit and then the podcast hit it is the way it works.
Megan
Yes.
Brian
That's awesome.
Advertiser 2
It worked brilliantly. I still have memories. I was driving back from Vermont with my Family. And I just, like, every time we would stop at a rest stop, I would check Fish Twitter and everyone was, like, laying into him and there was this giant debate over, like, is Fish over? Is everything done? Can anyone still have fun, man? What's going on, man? And he, you know, very eloquently defended his piece as, like, when Fish plays a great show, I will praise the show. When Fish doesn't play a good show, like, they didn't last night, I will not praise the show. And I, I just appreciated that and I loved it. And I think that that is something that has to be said about this show and this version.
Brian
That's awesome.
Megan
Yeah. This is what media moguls do, Brian. We make make cool happen. Timeless.
Advertiser 2
Nine years in the moment, nine years later.
Megan
That's so, so great. Okay. All right. That's it. We're cruising. We are cruising. We have four nominees left. Chronologically.
Brian
Yeah, this is, this is, this is the point I really struggled with. So those three felt easy for me. This next choice is really hard, and I AB'd the fuck out of these versions last night. Like, just over and over again to the point where I need a break from moma for, like, a while. And I would skip the song, you know, just get to the jam. But still, like, I need a break after this. But this was tough for me because I think there's three versions left that you could make an argument for. And one of them is the most exploratory MoMA possibly and the longest. And. But it also is a sit in. And. And I was like, is this like. And I'm not comparing these two people at all, so don't come at me. But is this like having Trump on Mount Rushmore with, like, Elon in the corner? Or like, can you really put, like a moma on Mount Rushmore that someone who isn't Fish is playing? But then I was thinking about, like, if we did, like, a funky bitch Mount Rushmore, which we would never do because Brian would die, but, like, if we did, you'd have to put, like, you know, the Leon version in, like, there's just, there's versions of songs that are the best with sit ins, but I just, I just couldn't do it. So we are going to go to a weekend that Ryan might not want to remember, but a show that I think both of you were at possibly I think you were both at together. I think I received a photo of you two together. A Midwest classic venue I. I thought was kind of storied and always delivered. But this did not happen this weekend. But we are going to the second to last song in the first set, which did deliver in my mind. We're going to August 12, 2022 to Alpine Valley. And this song starts out and I kind of forgot about Fishman samples from the summer 22. Remember, he was just constantly playing those samples. Hilarious, but also like a moment in time. Right?
Megan
Yep.
Brian
And I think just Trey sounds amazing in the intro. It's so melodic. He sounds really good. You've got a really rocking entry to the jam. And I like how this jam sounds different. Like it's less groove based, it's more contemplative and searching. It's really. Trey led in my mind and I was thinking about what Trey was saying in the New Yorker article about rhythmic variation being a huge part of how he improvises. And I think you can really hear that in this version. He starts with those riffs that sound like rips or screams and he plays with that until he builds like this big trilling peak in the end. And so I think this one goes on there for diversity for me. And also something. It's more modern and contemporary, but without this sit in where they also kind of really botched the song in the Grand Rapids version. I don't know. There's a lot of. There's a lot of discussion. But I'm really curious to hear where you all landed with the last one and what you think about the Alpine Valley pick.
Megan
Well, I just. I just want to say that it's. This show is. Is my famous David Bowie show, which. Brian.
Brian
Oh, that's right. When you saw. Yeah.
Megan
And I still. Because I said it online, I'll still stand by it. Because that's what you have to do. That it was the best David Bowie that I've ever seen because. Why not? Because I haven't seen that many good David Bowie's, especially in a really fucking long time.
Advertiser 2
It's really a good statement.
Megan
Yeah, Yeah.
Brian
I showed the list and everything you did.
Megan
I showed everybody the list. I think it's. It's cool that it takes a while to get into the song proper. Like the layering of effects which like a lot of these Jam charted versions have. I think Trey is really like really out in front on this. But I like the fact that he uses those effects in his layers to like build, build on it. It's a cool sonic like landscape in that song. I think it's a good, good version. Yeah. I don't know these, these. Well, I have. I have thoughts on another one. But I want to hear Brian.
Advertiser 2
Brian says this made my list too. We. We don't allow, you know, being in attendance to be a factor here. Whether we like to show or not. When we pick Mount Rushmore versions, we pick. Honestly, I did not have a very good time at the show. I did not have a very good time at this run. But this version is awesome. I had a great time with rjb. I want to say that.
Brian
Yeah, can't miss with the show, rjb.
Advertiser 2
You can't sometimes, you know, the universe just doesn't align and just didn't for me this weekend, which is okay. It happens. It didn't either. Two weekends later when I saw them at Dick's, you know, it's okay. It. It happened a lot the following year and a whole lot last year. And that is. That is what we're grateful for. And I continue to want to listen to fish after the 2022 Alpine Dicks run. I did everything you guys said. Makes sense. Really cool effects that they were using throughout that tour. I mean, it's funny because this version, when they started playing moma, I was like, okay, we're getting close to the end of the set. And I went to use the bathroom because I just figured, late first set, moma, I'll groove to it when I'm walking up the hill, coming back down. And as I was in the bathroom, you know, you can hear still. And I was like, well, there's a key change. Oh, fuck, they're jamming. And I wrapped up quickly, ran down the hill to join my buddy and enjoy the remainder of a really quality, jammed out version. It was at that cool time at Alpine where, like, the sun has gone behind the. The mountain, but it's still light in the sky. And so the lights do a really cool thing, like when you're inside of the pavilion, it just looks very cool and looks very rustic. I love this version. You know, just like the 7316 version. Magic lightning can strike even when the band is like, we refuse to try anything cool.
Megan
Yeah. And I just. That happened to me with the. The Rise coming together later that or earlier that summer at Wilmington.
Brian
In Wilmington?
Megan
Yeah. Is that where it was?
Brian
Yeah, yeah. We got to see the second set together.
Megan
Raleigh.
Brian
Raleigh. Raleigh, that's right. North Carolina. Yeah.
Advertiser 2
Different parts of the state.
Megan
I took my friend to his first or second Fish show and I was like, this, it's fine. This is the end of the set. We can go get some chicken tenders. And then while we're like Standing there, I was like, this never. This has never happened. He still talks about it because I was like, this is not what was supposed to happen. And he was like, what do you mean?
Brian
It's funny because I was like, the hottest. The hottest day on earth.
Megan
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
I was webcasting that show and they started playing Rise. And I decided, you know what? Now's a good time to pick up my dog's droppings in the backyard.
Megan
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
And I. I had. I had it on. I could hear it. And I was like. I had the same thought. I was like, what the are they doing? And it was a perfect Rise come together activity. I'll tell you what.
Brian
And then at the end, that second set ended up being so good, and it was so hot that day that I had to great second sub buy an app that could take out the sweat marks in my bodysuit because I knew I had to post pictures. When I met Jonathan and RJ there, and I was like, this can't happen. I had like. It was so. It was. It was honestly, like 100 degrees out with 100% humidity. It was outrageous.
Megan
It was really hot. I didn't do that for the pictures. Sorry, guys.
Brian
You had a white shirt on. It didn't matter.
Megan
Well, okay. I just want to say one thing. Can I say one thing about this, about the Grand Rapids version? Megan, you can say many things.
Brian
This is your show.
Megan
I mean, first of all, this. This is probably going to be the. The first and only Rushmore candidate with a sit in.
Advertiser 2
Possibly.
Brian
Yeah.
Advertiser 2
I can't guarantee that. Possibly.
Megan
It's basically like a Liz Reed jam, though. I think that that's my main thing, which is not. It's not.
Brian
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Megan
But it's just like them jamming, which I guess doesn't take anything away from it being on this list because it's awesome. But we were both there. Like, it was less. It was less awesome to me listening back than it was at the time. Does that make sense? I don't really know. Why?
Brian
Well, it was really exciting because it was the first time he came out, and so that was the first of the hundred shows he played or 100 songs he played with Fish that weekend. But when he came out, it was pretty exciting. Like hometown boy playing Phish. Everybody was pumped. I was on the floor with my friends, and it was electric in there. It was so exciting. And. But yeah, the jam is really, really sloppy. Like, it's pretty cool in parts because it has that, like, Allman Brothers, like. Like, feel. And it's. You know, Billy sounds great, but the song is super messy. And then there's like a section where they're really communicative. And then there's a part that Billie just seems to like drop off and it kind of sounds just like a fish jam without Billy and he kind of comes back. But I don't know. There's a, there's an argument for it to be on here because it's the longest moma. It's just, it does go a lot of different places.
Megan
Yeah, I think it should definitely be on here. I just don't think it, I don't think it should be on Rushmore.
Advertiser 2
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I agree completely. I mean, it ended up on my honorable mentions last year, which is a really rare thing for a 20 plus minute jam vehicle. And much of that is, is like what you said, rj. It's, it's like, it's a lizard jam, which is cool. Those rejams are great, but, you know, I'm not really the person to go to, to praise like reincarnations of The Allman Brothers 40 years later, 50 years later. I think it had a time and place and I think it's a great thing, symbolically that Billy played with Trey. I think it's a very solid version. When we're talking about what a song can do and how it can jam and evolve. I'm here for kind of the unknown.
Megan
Yeah, well, then you don't want to be a Madison Square Garden right now, Brian. I'll tell you that much.
Brian
No. Well, the brothers are playing there and I, I was gonna go and tickets were like $220. What? Nostalgia not good seats for like 200.
Advertiser 2
Nostalgia is a virus, Brian. Brandon, focus on the future, guys, come on.
Megan
I know you guys into the future. I know you have to go, but I, can, I, can I just say one honorable mention? Then I want to hear yours, Brian. Yeah, if you have one. And then Megan. But I, I, it's interesting because the, this is our first Baker's Dozen Rushmore candidate. I think the ver. This version, which is, that was a contender for me, which is sort of surprising because. But I don't remember listening to any Baker's Dozen jam so far in the series. There will be no. But like, I kind of just wanted to it to be on there because the Baker's Dozen was so great. You know, I'm like. Yeah, it's not even like that. Like this version's, it's like mellow, it's blissful. It's, it's Great. But it. It's mostly like, maybe any jam from that run, like right when it starts, you can just tell that it's Baker's Dozen. And it was just. God, it was such a vibe and such an amazing time that I feel like that would be my argument for putting it in there. But not even really because of the jam, just because it's like Baker's Dozen was so epic and it's still so great to listen to things.
Advertiser 2
So IAB. 7316 and 72217 over and over again. I ultimately went with 72217 from the Baker's Dozen. Thematically, I think. I think it's just really a big thematic jam. A lot of really cool sections. It's chill, you're right. But it, like, it. It seems to hang out in the MoMA space while slightly adjusting on it more than these other versions. Like these other versions, like Escape. MoMA 61704 is kind of like Dark MoMA, but this kind of like feels like a MoMA dance jam. Expanded, stretched out, slightly change, slightly altered. I don't think that there's really a wrong answer between this and 7316. I feel like if I had like two more days to like a B test them, I'd go back and forth each time, but I ultimately landed there. I think that they showcase a band at a point when they are really just rediscovering multi section jamming. And it's cool to hear it during one song. I don't necessarily think you got it wrong. I just went with a different option.
Brian
Yeah, I really questioned this. And the Alpine one. This is, to me, it balances drama and lightness in a really special way. It's really pretty and shimmery, but it also has weight to it. And it's just got those Bakers Dozen synths like, so good. So. I hear you.
Advertiser 2
Bakers Dozens synths. That's a good band name.
Brian
That is a good band name. Yeah. So that's. That'll be the next, like, Fish cover band. You just. You just annoyed it for them. Yeah, I. I get it. I. I was between. I was between those two. So your list, Brian, was. You had the same first two as me.
Advertiser 2
And my list was 2260-3617-0477-2217, 8 12, 22.
Brian
Okay. And RJ, what was your list?
Megan
Well, I. I don't know. I mean, I. I think they were. I think it was 226-036-170473. 16. And probably the Alpine version I probably had the same. But I. But I really wanted the. I really wanted the Baker's Dozen version. So I don't know, I went back and forth on that one, but I. I still think the Alpine version is more interesting.
Advertiser 2
Yeah, I would agree with that. Overall.
Brian
Yeah. Nice.
Advertiser 2
Well, we did it. We got Momo locked away.
Brian
Yeah. I love it. I'm happy with it.
Megan
We did it. Megan, are there other. Are there. Is there anything else that you want to say? I asked Brian, the honorable.
Brian
The only other. The only other one that I had on here, you know, my honorable mentions were the Baker's Dozen, O3 shoreline, which I love, which I spoke about the Grand Rapids. And then I do think this wasn't on your list, Brian, but 42022 MSG is just a killer version.
Advertiser 2
Solid version. 10, 16, 21. Great version. Good stuff. Lemon Wheel. Great version.
Brian
A lot of people were talking about that online. They were saying that it's just like a perfectly played version. Oh, I'll revisit that. Yeah.
Megan
Okay, so just real quick, we have the, the fan. The fan vote was 226,03,6, 1704,7,3,16. And then there was a three way tie for fourth place which was 8,15,21,8 1222 and 8,6,24. So a little bit of everything. Yeah.
Brian
Yeah.
Megan
Okay. I guess that. I mean, we. We kind of did it here. We're not. We're not. We do not have a Mount Rushmore next week because we have to talk about new. We have to talk about new fish.
Advertiser 2
So our next two episodes are going to be tour recaps. Monday.
Megan
Yep.
Advertiser 2
Monday we're going to meet to talk about the first weekend of the spring tour. And then the following week we'll do the whole tour as a. As a whole eight show thing that happened. Nine show. Eight show. I think it's eight show. Three, two, three. Yeah, that sounds about right. Should we tell people what our next Rushmore is that we will be back for in early May?
Megan
I think we should.
Brian
Let's do it.
Megan
Can you tell them so that I can know it is an RJB select.
Advertiser 2
It will be no man in no Man.
Megan
Oh, wow.
Brian
Oh, that's fun. I love that.
Advertiser 2
Another. Another relatively new song that has had some very big versions that I got some great versions queued up for my own Mount Rushmore. I'm curious to see where RJ goes.
Brian
That's exciting.
Megan
That is going to be fun. And we have a few weeks for that because we do have. Of course we have the Recaps. But Brian, thank you for curating all these.
Brian
I know, it's so awesome.
Megan
Really, really great.
Advertiser 2
My intent is for your delight. That includes. That includes drafts.
Brian
Oh, that's so nice. It's so generous this week. It's making me feel good. Thanks. I decided before we go, someone was asking about my picture that's behind me. And so I just wanted to say it is a J. Bleaksberg print from the Grateful dead chose in May 1990, 1987, Laguna Seca.
Megan
It's a cool picture. Yeah, it's a cool picture. I didn't read any individual entrance of moma Dance from Mount Rushmore, but I do want to mention evdudes because I think he's watching.
Advertiser 2
So.
Megan
226-0361, 7, 0473. 16 and 8, 6 24. So he was one of those that put the Billy Sit in out there. So hope we didn't malign that too much for you. We had a. Oh, wait, hold on. We have a. We have a late breaking comment here from our listener Nectars tomorrow, Broad Street Opera House, Friday, Iron Horse, Saturday, Reprise. Thank you. VT to boot for that.
Brian
So nice. That's awesome. Those are gonna be fun shows.
Megan
I'll be up Saturday, Friday and Saturday.
Brian
Oh, and rj, we should also tell people about our live event in May.
Megan
Please, please, please proceed. Can you.
Brian
Yeah, so we're going to do a live HFPOD live with Mike Greenhouse from Relics, and it's going to be at Garcia's in Port Chester at the Capitol Theater before the Reprise show there. So if you have tickets to the Reprise show and if you don't, you should get them. This is free. You can just come early and hang out with us. Rj, myself, and Mike will be on stage and we're going to do an HFPOD live. And they're going to be doing shows from the island tour, right?
Megan
Yeah. Yeah. That's going to be crazy. That's going to be the last night. So it's gonna be the last night of the island tour on May 22nd. And they're playing the 1st, the 8th, the 15th, and 22nd. Every Thursday in May is going to be a. Is going to be an island tour show. So.
Brian
And I'll be at those Garcia shows, both of them.
Megan
Megan will be there. Come hang out and see Megan and see Reprise, too. We have one. I had one voicemail about the moma dance. Can I just play it before we. Before we leave? Okay, hold on one sec. Now I need to remember how to do this because everything makes a lot of sense. All right, here we go.

Hello, helping friendly podcast. This is Bryce and I just want to let you know my thoughts around moma Dance. If we're going to carve Moba Dance into stone upon the face of Mount Rushmore, I think you've got to have something there representing the infectious energy that the song brings, especially in a moment. I don't know. It seems to happen when they play in the second set, but not always. But a good example of that is one that you did not include as an option to vote FOR, which is September 29, 2000 in Vegas. A much maligned show, but with a very energetic start to the second set, among other things, despite the sit ins and you know what I'm talking about. But the MoMA dance off the mother, and it is amazing. If you haven't heard it, go back and listen to that. And that is what moma Dance should do at time and. Or at least the first half of the song. They're gonna jam. That's fine too. They didn't jam early on and that version does not have a jam. But I think it should be considered as, you know, kind of a standard, if you will. Kind of. It represents what mobinance can do and did do back when we were all still kind of having our jaws on the floor at times when they would play the funk. So keep that in mind. I really like that version and I hope you guys are having a great day. I'll see you if you're there on Friday night at Broad Book. Broad Baruch, to get down to some fish tunes in real time.
Advertiser 2
Bye.
Megan
See, look at that. We gotta. We got a reprise plug there at the end. I will see you there on Friday night. Yeah. What do you. What do you. Did you listen to that version?
Brian
No, I didn't listen to that version.
Megan
No, I didn't either.
Brian
Yeah, I haven't listened to that one.
Megan
Now we have to go back.
Brian
We have to go back now. Although I do need a break. But I do think what happens is when there's less versions, it's almost like bad because you can just play them over and over again, which is a little bit mind numbing.
Megan
It's true. That's true. That might happen with our next one, no Man's Land. I'll get the voting up on that very soon, so everyone can check that out and vote alongside the release. But yeah, we'll see you on, I guess maybe on May 22nd at Garcia's because we're going to be hanging out with Mike Greenhouse from Relics. Megan mentioned. That'll be fun. So we have a live HF pod coming up. It's pretty cool.
Brian
Yeah, it's the best. And hopefully more this summer. Fingers crossed.
Megan
Hopefully more this summer. We need to figure that out. Okay.
Brian
Yeah.
Megan
So we'll be back, I think, on Monday for some. For some weekend recaps. Apparently, Fish is playing, like, maybe tomorrow or something, so it's happening fast.
Brian
That is tomorrow.
Megan
Yeah, it's happening fast. All right, Megan, anything else?
Brian
No, that's it. Thanks, everyone.
Megan
Thanks, everybody. See you soon.

This is Lawrence Lanahan, journalist, musician, and host of Rearranged, an Osiris Media podcast about music arranging. Once a song is written, arrangers make musical decisions that shape how we end up hearing the song. We're not just talking about adding orchestral accompaniment like horns and strings, or doing a cover version of a song. Arrangement can be putting happy music over dark lyrics, using samples, recording all acoustic, even tiny decisions like putting an electronic loop into an acoustic song to draw your attention to an important turn of phrase. It's all arranging. Rearranged Episodes are documentary essays where I use arrangements to answer some big questions, like what is a song and what can a song become? And how can the sound of a song change the meaning you take from it? Listening this way has changed my relationship with music. To tune in, to Rearranged, and maybe it'll happen for you, too.
