Hey everybody.
Laura Jarrett (0:04)
Welcome to here's the scoop from NBC News. I'm Laura Jarrett filling in for Yasmin Vasugian. Here's what's going on today. A jury is now deliberating a landmark trial all about social media addiction and mental health. We're going to hear from a mother whose daughter died by suicide and why she blames big tech. Plus why Cuba and the US Are now talking as Cuba grapples with this ongoing economic crisis. And the new category to watch for at Sunday's osc. But first, our top story, a concerning spate of potentially ISIS related terror attacks in recent days. The gunman in a shooting at Old Dominion University on Thursday had previously been convicted of supporting isis. According to court documents, he was on probation for another terrorism related charge. And last weekend at the mayor's residence in New York City, two men ignited an improvised explosive device. Sources tell NBC News that the men directly referred to ISIS in statements to law enforcement. So it's all raising the question, is there a resurgence of ISIS here in the US and what is law enforcement doing about it? I want to bring in national law enforcement and intelligence correspondent Tom Winter here with me now. Hey Tom.
Tom Winter (1:15)
Hey Laura. It's a critical time to be talking about this.
Laura Jarrett (1:18)
Let's start with the suspects in each of these cases. What do we know about their backgrounds and possible connections to isis and what is law enforcement telling you?
Tom Winter (1:27)
Yeah, so in the Gracie Mansion attempted attack as you referenced, those two individuals come from Pennsylvania. How long they knew each other is a bit of a question. Their foreign travels is a big question, including trips toin one of their cases to Turkey. That is concerning because Turkey has been typically a jumping off point for individuals who've wanted to travel to Syria where sure the ISIS presence is a fraction of what it used to be. But there are a number of jail facilities and still some camps that are associated with that terrorist group in that country. So that's a big concern. What was up with the travel there? They come into New York City via the George Washington Bridge about an hour before they try to conduct this attack. And it was just because they made a technical mistake with their bombs and the explosive TATP triacetone triperoxide. It's only for that reason that several New York City police officers weren't killed and bystanders weren't killed. To your point, they both referenced isis. One of them even wrote a note pledging their allegiance to ISIS and pretty much referenced without even being ass just recorded on body worn camera on his way to the Precinct says, you know, we're a religion of action. And it makes a reference to the fact that they felt that the prophet was being insulted. Of course there was a protest going on at the same time by a far right influencer who's talking about how, you know, bemoaning the Islamic influence currently in New York City. Politics in his words. Then the other instance was a person who was arrested, convicted, sentenced for material support for isis. We talk about the Old Dominion shooter walks into the classroom yesterday, says this is an ROTC class. They say yes. He yells out Allah Akbar and starts firing. And if it wasn't for the other students in the class, including one of them stabbing him, according to multiple sources we've talked to, that shooting could have been somehow worse. You haven't brought up, and I know that it's a topic on people's minds. The incident at Temple Israel in Michigan yesterday, the more we learn about it, the more and more authorities and we as reporters are concerned that that may be a terrorist inc.
