Herman Schrader
Herman Schrader on the Dirty Mo media platform from the middle of America in St. Louis, Missouri, starts right now. The following is a production of Dirty Mo Media. I'm looking at Kenny Schrader right now.
Kenny Schrader
He has drinker in the show. I mean.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. How in the world did we agree to do a podcast?
Kenny Schrader
I like spending time with you.
Herman Schrader
That makes me happy.
Kenny Schrader
Well, it's all about making you happy.
Herman Schrader
We're always honest.
Kenny Schrader
We don't know that we're not in trouble already, you know, and sometimes truthful. What makes you think you're not a little different?
Herman Schrader
You're weird. Herman Schrader.
Kenny Schrader
I'm. I'm closer to the middle of America.
Herman Schrader
Oh, my God. Okay, everybody, that's on Dirty Mo Podcast. Schrader is in Independence, Iowa, under a tree.
Kenny Schrader
I was at the top of the aluminum grandstands with the sun in my face. That wasn't gonna work. But let me show you my view real quick.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, let me see here.
Kenny Schrader
Looking all around. Nothing, nothing. Nothing but cornfields, race car haulers, race tracks. And I had to move because the graders and all the equipment went out on the track to get it ready for the next three nights. And it got too loud.
Herman Schrader
Oh, my God. And Kenny, you are in seventh heaven. Let me just say this. Happy birthday.
Kenny Schrader
That was last. That's over.
Herman Schrader
Happy birthday. And you, you said you are excited to race six nights in a row. Is this your birthday present?
Kenny Schrader
No, it's just the way it's supposed to be. But I kind of. I already got rained out once. And then one night was a practice night. I shouldn't have counted that. So now we're down to just. Yeah, whatever, six. And we got a day off and then two more. So, yeah, it's fun. It's summertime in the Midwest and there's going to be 180 cars here the next three nights. Now that's five classes, but still, they had 38 modifieds take time last night and a lot of heavy hitters here. It's. It's neat. Track was fantastic.
Herman Schrader
That makes me happy. I'm smiling from ear to ear. And what did I do over the weekend? I'm like, Kenny, I tried to race, but we got rained out on Saturday night. And Dietz, what about you? What would you do over the weekend?
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Basketball and watching racing. It was a weekend I didn't have to announce. And I go back to Lakeview this weekend and it gets pretty busy in June as far as announcing goes. But yeah, just following my kid around shooting basketballs.
Herman Schrader
Okay, here we. Yep.
Kenny Schrader
We talk about races. You know, we were here at Independence on the track all day yesterday. And I knew last night run late, but everybody in the garage, the garage area, everybody in the field out here.
Herman Schrader
Yep.
Kenny Schrader
That had it on. Yeah, that was a race.
Herman Schrader
Okay, this makes me happy, everybody, because what an introduction. And Kenny Schrader gave it. And I don't have to convince him. All right, let's start. Like just like that, Kenny. Everybody at the dirt tracks, they kind of stopped. What they were doing or they were watching was one of the greatest NASCAR races in my history. In my brain. Denny Hamlin wins his 62nd win in incredible race over Christopher Bell and Chase Briscoe. Now this race, what made this race so good, Kenny, is this race went on all night long. And you know, Denny Hamlin jumps to start. I guess you know, Mark Martin invented the phrase brain fade. I don't know. Denny had brain fade. Clearly jumped to start big time, and he makes his comeback all night long. So, Kenny, Nashville showed up too. It was with what grandstands they had and with what RV parking they had. It was like if you wanted to paint this perfect scenario, it was like anywhere you want to pan the camera, it looked good. So what. What are they saying up there in. In Independence about that race?
Kenny Schrader
Well, they. They were still more worried about this race here last night, but they said that race was. Was really good. You know, I'm not a concrete fan of the concrete tracks, but they have from when they first did it at Dover and they've. They figured out what to do. And Nashville has had some fabulous races the last couple years we ran. The first race they ever had up there was. Was an ARCA race and it was pretty slippery then. But man, I saw some of the highlights where they're three wide and stuff. Those cars, those cars are really showing out at some different places.
Herman Schrader
Okay, we'll. We'll get to particulars later, but let's just. Let's do something different. Let's go to. All good right away. Last week, Denny Hamlin said that Goodyear is on to something, guys, and that they figured out a formula and in the factory that this tire now is wearing out. Seemed like it might have taken Goodyear couple years, but this is two races in a Row where the, the tire slows up. And Denny Hamlin said that he thinks this is the key why the races have been watchable and likable. I mean, is there something there, Kenny? I mean, does Goodyear have a lot to do with this car?
Kenny Schrader
Oh, I think so. I think that's, you know, we've seen that for years. We want a tire that gives up and has faded. But let's, let's, let's back way up on that. Watchable and likable. That's why that all these races have been watchable and likable. Even the ones that people didn't like, the majority of people said weren't great. It's because we got damn spoiled back when five cars finished during the lead lap or two cars finished on the lead lap. That's, remember, that's the good old days everybody liked. So now if it's just not a fantastic 3 wide, another guy looking to make it 4 wide all the time, it wasn't a good race. Well, that's not right. So they've, they've all been good, but this one was just at the top of that good scale again. And that's, yeah, a lot of that has to do with the tire.
Herman Schrader
Dietz Some people say I can't find the race on tv, but it seems here lately they've been finding it. They're up 12% on Prime. The TV's showing up good. They got a, they got a guest every week. So last week it was Carl Edwards, this week it was Mark Martin. I don't know what it is, but it just, it never stops. Kenny, I don't know if you've seen it, but this prime, you're saying all your buddies up there in the middle of a cornfield found it. But, but deets, they, there's no commercial breaks. It's just side by side. There's a different vibe on Prime. What's your thoughts, Dietz? You're, you're a TV guy.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Well, I think, I think Fox has gotten a little bit stale, frankly. And, and obviously they've put some of their efforts, you know, more towards IndyCar and, and it's shown, I mean, I think the Indy car coverage is, is excellent. This stuff about prime and not being able to find it, I don't like it being on five different networks. But listen, a few years ago, to Kansas City Chiefs from Peacock, I got Peacock just to watch the Chiefs play a playoff game and no other reason. If I didn't have Prime, I would get prime to watch the cup races. And here's the thing, you're having to pay a little bit extra to get prime and they have stepped up. I've always loved Daniel Trotter. I think she does a great job. Their pre and post race shows, you know, Fox got rid of the post race show more or less, and then the booth, you know, Adam Alexander has always been excellent. And Dale Jr. And Lator, they could not have explained the issue with the break caliper last night any better. They hit it perfect and they didn't get too technical about it. They talked about how, you know, it's like glass. You warm it up, cool it down, warm it up, cool it down. It's eventually going to bust. And the Calipers were doing the same thing. I think Prime's doing excellent. I think they're doing wonderful. And frankly, I wish they had more races, to tell you the truth. And when you go into the TNT part of the season, it's similar, you know, because Adam Alexander and la Tarte go over and the way that TNT is doing races is similar to Prime. So it might take a little bit extra effort to get to it. But this stuff about complaining and whining about it being on prime is just, you know, negative people being negative and they're always going to be that way.
Herman Schrader
Kenny Schrader, I have some great news for you. You are the one that started this segment. You would say, what would Jeff Gluck say about this race? And we have a new track record. Yeah, 88 as of Monday morning. It's Monday morning, everybody. This, this comes out on Wednesday. 88 of the people said this was a great race. 12%. And I don't know who they are. What do you think of that?
Kenny Schrader
How many, how many people was that we up to as far as the survey? That.
Herman Schrader
That is about 2,000 people right now. And like I said, we've been trying to figure out what's going on there, but this is all we can go off of.
Kenny Schrader
It's going to. It's going to trend that way. It's not going to change a ton. Wow. We made someone happy. We're not going to make them all happy. We made someone happy. I don't know. I mean, it's. It's good racing. Let's talk about the race. I mean. Yeah, we already know that.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
The other thing that I liked about this race, you know, because you always put a caveat on it. Like with the 600, it was like, oh, they were racing the rain. In this case, they were not racing the rain. They Knew this race was going to go to full distance, and they still raced that way.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. Okay, Kenny, like you said, let's talk about racing. And God knows that you've raced as much as anybody. So we had four drivers last night that blew rotors and went slamming into the wall. And I was thinking to myself, I think of these four drivers, if this were to happen 20 years ago with no safer barriers. So. Connor Zillich, Ross Chastain, A.J. almendinger, Chris Buescher. There was a phenomenon going on last night. I don't know why, but, Kenny, they were going into turn one. Every single accident, all four happened going into one. Just your thoughts on going to the brake pedal, and it blown apart and you have no control.
Kenny Schrader
I don't want to think about it. It's. It's ugly. Oh, but it's a lot better. With the new seats and the safer barriers and the Hans device, it's a lot better. But we haven't heard about brake problems in this car, period, have we? I mean, to speak of.
Herman Schrader
No. The brakes are so big. Kenny, when you go to the race. Yeah. When you go to these racetracks and look at these. These new next gen cars, it's like the brakes nowadays are bigger than our complete tires in our day.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. Yeah. So we obviously had something going on. Maybe it was a bat. Who knows? Who knows?
Herman Schrader
They were saying weird. Steve Latart has some really good information. He. He's kind of the Larry McReynolds of Prime. Steve Latart, Dale junior's old crew chief. That. That pair up there. Steve knows everything. I mean, when they're gonna pit. And he said that everybody had a little different brake combination. A little bit different brake pad on this team, A little bit different brake pad on that team. Some were cooling their brakes too much, and some, you know, were putting tape and not letting them get cold and crystallizing. So, yeah, that. That's for an engineer. But, yeah, I. I just thought to myself, kenny, they were showing these safer barriers. Move a foot, you know, when these guys were hitting them. And so, okay, nobody got hurt. And. And that was. That was something that we got to give a shout out. Like you said, Kenny, these seats nowadays.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, it's all better. It's all better.
Herman Schrader
All right. Kind of going back to the start of the race, we got rained out, guys. And I thought I would bring this up because we've never really talked about it before. You know, I've always heard about it, Kenny and Dietz, but they use this. They call It a metric to line up when, when qualifying is rained out. So here's what it is. 70% of your finish from the last week, 30% from corner points. So you had guys like Ross Chastain starting 35th. Joey Logano run eight last week at Charlotte, so he lined up ninth. Kenny, what do you think of that? Is it better than luck of the draw?
Kenny Schrader
Well, you know, we, for years we would have done it by car owner points. That's how we always lined up in the event of rain. I don't think it makes much difference at all because you know, you gotta, you just gotta have a starting spot. The same cars basically wind up towards the front. Same cars that always run in the middle wind up in the middle. Other than when you have a problem or something, but however they want to do it, that's last race and car owner points, that's fine. You just need a way to line them up that everybody knows how they're going to do it.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, I thought I'd share that because I thought, oh, finally. This is what metric means. Yeah, I was. Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
Means somebody got to have a calculator.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, right. Okay. When the race was over, I was really impressed with Chase Elliott. Chase ran good. He was right there. He could, he could see and feel those Toyotas. Kenny. Chase Elliott was asked, hey, what do those Toyota's got? And he says, it's not much more than you would think. We are right there right now. I thought that was a really nice statement by Chase calming the Chevrolet base down. He says, we're just all so close right now. But it was Chase, Elliot, it was Kyle Larson. They were up front for a while and just finally got outrun at the end. Just your thoughts on Chase saying that?
Kenny Schrader
Well, I mean, we've seen Larson, we've, we've seen some of the Henry cars right there, you know, all year at different times, the Toyota is just a little bit there in front. Forget about manufacturer, you know, all the time, because it's also, it's not, it's teams, you know, teams got a little bit of advantage. They found a little something and they're sharing it within their team. So it's not just manufacturer all times. The thing that I, I just, I glanced last night when I was going to sleep in the hauler, you know, Van Ginsbergen.
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
Again.
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And Josevar, again, top 10.
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
I just like everything I'm seeing and
Herman Schrader
I like what you're bringing to the show today. This is perfect. Cue Dietz. You want to give us the top 10 of the race. We'll, we're still going and we'll keep going while you bring up the top 10. But let's stay right there with SVG. You know, I can remember when Dale Earnhardt Senior would say, hey, Nigel Mansell when he came from Formula one. I remember Senior saying, hey, Nigel, Mansell is figuring out this, this IndyCar racing over here in America. Do you think it's a deal where SVG is just finally figuring it out
Kenny Schrader
if, if you didn't grow up that way and they tell you you're going to turn left all the time with three other idiots beside you?
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And oh yeah, there's a concrete wall over there. We got no runoff. There's a concrete wall over there and there's one on the inside if you slide far enough. Yeah, it takes a little bit to figure it out.
Herman Schrader
Dietz, what do you got, buddy? What's our top 10?
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Well, there's some. It's interesting. Dean Hamlin, of course, was the winner. Christopher Bale finished second. Chase Briscoe was third. All three Joe Gibbs cars, even though he didn't finish in the top 10. Ty Gibbs was up there the whole time, which I think goes back to these teams are, are all running good, so they're all able to share data. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Great finish for him. He finished fourth. Shane Van Gisbergen was fifth. Tyler Reddick 6. Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney. Zane Smith again, second week in a row of top 10. He led some laps and, and Carson Hosovar had a very interesting night and finished 10.
Herman Schrader
Any, any things stand out to you, Kenny? I guess SVG stood out to me too. Oh, I want to give a shout out at. You know, there was, there was a kink thrown in this race. I know you're running last night, but there was a thought that Zane Smith might sneak off a win or a top five. He stayed out on the track and we were down to 15 to go and he's still leading. Zane Smith. Kenny, he shows up and I think he, he's a really good driver. Good looking guy, shows up for Front Row Motorsports. What'd you think of Zane Smith?
Kenny Schrader
One thing that our sport never has had a problem with is his shortage of up and coming, really good drivers. There's a lot of them out there and Zane is obviously one of them that's getting the opportunity to showcase his talents and the team is giving him what he needs.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. And he ended up ninth, so I thought it was a great move. But he held pace, you know, he was fast. It wasn't like he was lucking into something. It was just some strategy. But he ended up ninth and a good run by Zane Smith.

Herman Schrader
We got some really good stuff here that went, went on at the race, before the race. You know, Ben Kennedy said, we're going to do it a little more entertaining. Well, well, what happened at the race? We had a, we had a big rainstorm come through, big rain delay, and Jimmie Johnson has a new financial partner. They're saying, Hooting the Blowfish, the lead singer, Darius Rucker, they're saying he really put money into this team. So when everybody. Yeah, well, you know, the rest never do put money and it's just their name. But Kenny, Darius Rucker takes his guitar out, put some speakers out behind the tractor trailer. This. Hundreds of people gather around during the rain delay and Darius Rucker sings some of his greatest hits. I know, we're racers. Is that okay with you?
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, that's great. Okay. You know, I don't do music. I got no. I mean, I care less about music. Yeah. But there's certain. And when Darius Rucker, all of a sudden, I hear Darius Rucker this number of years ago. And I said, I'm talking to Mikey Waltrip, who knows him. And I said, I like that guy. I mean, how in the hell does someone get that big that quick? And they said, well, he used to sing for Hootie and the Blowfish or whatever it was.
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And I said, well, I've heard of them. So I didn't know he was, you know, I thought all of a sudden it's. This guy showed up and did real good. But no, that's fine, man. I'm all about the racing. Yeah. But our times have changed. We got to add more stuff. And anytime, you know, it's like they said 19 oh something. Marty Robbins would get out and do stuff. But that. That's great. I mean, the more of those guys we can have involved in our sport, the better. Wow.
Herman Schrader
I like that you reminded us all of Marty Robbins. El Paso City. Good stuff. Okay, Deets, you're a purist. Is it okay with you that we have some entertainment in the sport of nascar?
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Yeah, I mean, for me, as long as they're really invested in it. And I think when pit bull was involved with Track House, he was invested in it. And then whenever he. Whatever happened and they went their separate ways, he went his separate way. I like seeing Darius Rucker at the racetrack. If he's really involved with Legacy, and the fact that he was there shows me that he was involved with Legacy. One thing I do want to do, though, and I hate to go back, but I am going to plant this seed, and I want you to think about it. Alex Bowman's done in the 48. He's done. Whoever gets in it is whatever, but he's done. Let me give you another one to think about. If I'm forward, do you think I'm telling Roger Penske you might want to put that Zane Smith in that two car, because I think Austin Cinder is another one that's right there on the edge right now. And the only reason I bring this up is because, you know, they. And I know you're probably going to bring it up, Kenny, but they, you know, Corey hines going into 35 next year. I think that'll instantly turn that car around. So I, I think this could be a very interesting silly season. And I've not heard anything about the Zane Smith thing, but if they don't do something, they're going forward will end up losing him if. If they don't make some moves.
Herman Schrader
Okay, let's go right there. That's fair. I like that. Okay, Kenny, you're up there in Independence, Iowa. Now. We knew this was going to happen, but we're thinking to ourselves, okay, Corey Hime is 23 years old. He's done everything that you could possibly ask out of him. It's like, how much longer going to make this kid wait? So what 2311 did. 2311 said, okay, Riley Herbst is out. Now it's thought of that Riley Herbst might go to Legacy with Jimmy Johnson. But Corey Hine is now going to drive Riley Herbs car next year. What do you think, Kenny? Just serving it up to you there. Hey, Riley Herbst, you know, he's done his best. But Corey Hym comes in last night in a blue number 67, starts in the back, runs in the top six, drives to the front, gets in a little bit of a wreck. What's your thought about Corey Heim?
Kenny Schrader
Well, he's obviously got a lot of talent. This is just a tough business, you know. I mean, yeah, it's tough. Okay. I signed a three year deal with Henry 95, 96, 97 with Budweiser and bought way out of the contract in 97 because I was done. I knew I was done. I was done in middle of 96. I mean, well, I was going to get to race in 97, but we weren't, we weren't getting stuff done and I went to, to Petrie's where I really want it and I love Hendrick Motorsports and Rick is dear friend. I mean I do anything there, but it was just, it was, it was time. Had to do something else. It happens. Every combination doesn't work. You got to find one that does.
Herman Schrader
I want to say that I really like that. I want to give my point of view and, and I'll serve this. I want to say something about this and I'm going to serve it up to you. Deets. Just because Joey Logano did not do real good at Joe Gibbs, it doesn't mean you throw him away and his career's over. Like Kenny's saying right now, I can give you a lot of examples.
Kenny Schrader
Okay?
Herman Schrader
You know, Penske says, hey, I'll take Joey Logano. So when something doesn't work out for a driver, I don't think you throw the driver away. Riley Herbs. Now this is something I'm going to say. I don't mean to be mean, but Herbs has got money. You go on the West Coasters, all those herb stores and they're selling monster and energy drinks. So Riley's got a little ace up his sleeve. So what are you thinking, Dietz?
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Well, I don't, I don't think anybody thought that Logano going to Penske would do what he did. You know, sometimes guys move up the cup and they've had a lot of success in O'Reilly or trucks or whatever and they just can't, whether it's the pressure, whether it's the type of vehicle, whatever it is, they, they can't make that transition. And you guys know it better than me. I only know it from the outside looking in. Sometimes they're just. There's combinations that work and don't work, whether it's personalities clashing between a crew chief and a driver or whatever. And I think, you know, I think the Cindrick thing and Bowman are different than Herbst. You know, I think Bowman has got, has had injuries and there's not been consistency and I think that's hurt him. I think Cedric, I think he's been under Penske this whole time and his dad worked for Penske. I think you could take him and maybe you swap him in Bowman, honestly. And it wouldn't surprise me a bit if you. And again, this is, this is all speculation. This is nothing I've heard or anything else, but I could very well see you switch Cedric and Bowman and the two of them both go into the cars that the other one got out of and have success. I mean, it's happened many times and, and I wouldn't doubt that we see something like that, you know, with either one of those guys.
Herman Schrader
Kenny, I'm gonna. Yeah, go ahead, Kenny.
Kenny Schrader
Let me throw this. Other times, every now and then you take a person that's had average success in the O'Reilly series, which was whatever back then, and you put him in a brand new team and he becomes a superhero like Jimmy Johnson.
Herman Schrader
Yes, one, one. He won one O'Reilly race barely at Chicago.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Yes.
Kenny Schrader
And then look, he wins right off the bat. I mean, wins early in the year.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Well, Ross Chastain is the perfect example of that. You think about it, if he's in Johnny Davis's stuff in O'Reilly series, and that's a probably a 25th place car and he was able to get it up there, 14th, 15th, things like that. And people said, hey man, this, this guy might actually be able to drive. And then you put him in a capable cook car. I, I think that that's a benefit. Whenever you've had to go out there and drive lesser equipment and you could go out there and get in something. It's just like you said, Kenny, when you got in the Or Herm. When you got into one car, you said, what have I been doing my whole life? You know, I wouldn't. I just want in the right equipment.
Herman Schrader
Hey, Kenny, I'm thinking right now about what you said. It just seems like Ricky Stenhouse is a really good fit for that. Hayek, you know, they just signed a two year extension that's going to take him to 40 years old and he run he run, what, fourth last night. If we took Ricky Stenhouse and put him in the very best race car it is, in my opinion, maybe it don't work as good. But. But I like what you're saying, that you left Hendrik, you went to, you know, Andy and you loved it there. That combination. I love.
Kenny Schrader
I loved Henry, too. We just didn't run good, you know, we didn't run good, but, yeah, it's just. It's just combination. Sometime it's like it's. It's a team, you know, I mean, you get the driver's the one that they see the most, and the crew chief's next, and then there's all those other people that are just, just as important, and y' all got to get the job done together.
Herman Schrader
All right, everybody. I think the bottom line is this. Just because Alex Bowman is getting roughed up, it does not mean we throw him away. Maybe he goes to Front Row Motorsports. That's. That's a forward over there, right? And then maybe Zane Smith goes, hell, we don't know what we're saying. Deets brought it up. I do like the conversation. Good work, Deets. Good work.

Kenny. Justin Allgar. We are changing subjects, everybody. That's 32 minutes of cup. I think we did really good right there. Justin augar wins his 32nd. O'REILLY and I mean, puts it on him. And in the race was Kyle Larson, Corey Day. Now, Justin, here's the subject matter. And Kenny, you know the Allgar family like I do, and this is a show. He says. Justin Allgaier goes, well, I might not retire now. What do you think?
Kenny Schrader
Victor Lane Will do that to you. I just, yeah, I just, I just kind of got a laugh because you say in the race was Kyle Larson and Corey Day, and two months ago is like, well, Corey Day ever quit hitting win a race? You know, now it's Corey Day was in the race. Stuff changes fairly quick in our sport.
Herman Schrader
Fair statement, And I agree 100%. You know, it's just adjusting is winning races against the best. I mean, they come over there. Let's just, just take Kyle Larson. Kyle was super loose, drove the hell out of it. But here's my opinion. Justin is on a heater. In baseball, a heater means they got it going on. He's on a roll. His first thought was, I need to go back home and take care of the family business. I like what Dale Jr. Said. Dale Jr. Said, Look, we're all racers, but sometimes it's like, okay, we just get tired of doing this. Justin's, you know, letting his age and his family business get into his brain. Hey, if, if Justin wants to go home and be with his family and run the business, Dale Jr. Said, I'm all about it. However, if Justin stays. Now this caught me off guard. Dale Jr. Said, if Justin stays, that puts pressure on me to find the money to give him the equipment. I don't know where. Brand said, I haven't heard why Justin, you know, I know going home with the family business. But do you know anything about Brandt? Are they staying, leaving, what's that about?
Kenny Schrader
I don't know. But it's just a little bass mid season, so we got a lot of time to figure out because just the same way, just the same way you get on a heater, you. The world turns terrible. You know, you can ask Ryan Blaney or somebody said, you know, had things going bad a little bit in a row. Too many races in a row. It's early. We'll see what happens.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, speaking of that, I'm just going to throw this in here out of nowhere. Speaking about things going bad, our three time champion and we love Joey Logano, but just when you think he can't do any better. The Joey Logano foundation is really good and so are everybody else's foundations. But Joey said something on Trackside Live yesterday that caught me off guard. He said his father was in foster care and some his family members. So Joey Logano and his wife have taken two children in. I don't know how long foster care is, but Kenny, that's, that's worth a shout out. I just think that's incredibly wonderful. And that's what the Joey Logano foundation does, is take children that are roughed up and give them a little bit of love. Just your thoughts on that?
Kenny Schrader
Well, I don't. You know, I've been around Joey and his wife just a little bit. Man, there's. There's a lot of good people in our sport. Our sport is different than so many other sports. If you can throw a baseball, unbelievable. You can show that in junior high and high school and some college will send you there, will give you a pass to come there, a scholarship to come there and play. Same thing with football. All these other sports. Our sport, you have to have a lot of money no matter what level. You have to have money no matter what level you're playing with. You're up in Independence, Iowa, racing with the IMCA stock car up here or trying to run the Xfinity Series or the Cup Series or whatever. It takes money. So because of that, if you don't have a lot, you have to be really nice to people. You have to not get in trouble. You have to be a pretty good person for people to want to help you. We got a lot of really good people involved in our sport.
Herman Schrader
Poor. I like that. What you just, in short. Yeah, they got money, but they do a good job of raising money and doing the right things. Well said. Okay, moving on. In the truck series, Lane Riggs is on a heater. I'm making fun of the word heater, Kenny. Lane Riggs wins two in a row. It doesn't matter how you want them. I. I raced against his. His dad. His dad's in victory. Lane. This Lane Riggs, I just like it. He's just showing up and just a shout out to Lane Riggs. I met him at South Boston when I ran the cars tour race about three years ago. Just a sweetheart of a kid. Like you said, Kenny, there's no shortage for talent in our sport. But two in a row for Lane Riggs.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, you always win them the same way. You always win them the same way. You go the total distance. Whether it's the total distance because got rain delayed or rain shorted or the 500 miles or whatever. You go total distance first. That's how you win them.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. Deets, you're a short track expert.
Kenny Schrader
Did you.
Herman Schrader
Did you see this Lane Rigs coming?
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Well, I love Scott Riggs. And they both. He and Lane both came up kind of the same way through late model stocks and, and stuff like that. And you know, Lane got in that 34 truck and I thought he was going to kill it, you know, because Zane Smith had. Had won the championship in it. And, and he got in it when he first got in it, if you remember, he didn't have a lot of good runs and stuff. And through the short track racing and knowing him that way, I actually happened to be at front row and I told him, I said, don't get down on yourself. And I'm sure a lot of people were telling him this, but I told him, I said, don't get down on yourself. You know that you can do this. You know that this truck can do it. Just, just keep believing in yourself because I think a lot of it has to do with your attitude and where you are mentally. And like, I look at Bubba Wallace right now, he's defeated right now.
Herman Schrader
Horrible interview. Horrible interview.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
He, he's defeated right now and he's in his head. And so, yeah, I mean, I think Lane Riggs is. He went through that situation at the beginning of his time in truck series and he stuck with it. And I will say, you know, Ford with their ladder and that's what I was kind of talking about with Zane Smith. You know, you got a lot of Ford trucks out there now and you got a lot of Ford cut cars. Ford's gonna have to do something with this O'Reilly series because it's a big jump for a guy like Lane Riggs to go from truck to cut. And right now, I mean, they've been races this year where Ford didn't even have a car out there, no rally series. So hopefully somebody can step up and we can get a few Fords out there in O'Reilly series because a guy like Lane Riggs is a perfect example of, of the kind of guy that kind of needs that bridge before he goes to.
Herman Schrader
Good point. All right, Kenny, I don't know if you got anything to say about that subject, but we're going to move on to dirt racing. We are at 41 minutes, everybody. Schrader's underneath the tree in Independence, Iowa,

You're at a dirt track. You saw everything that happened in Mansfield. I'm not going to steal the thunder from. Give me your point of view, and I'll comment on Mansfield, Ohio.
Kenny Schrader
Well, Matt Tiff drove our Arcacar for a year. I've known Matt for a long time.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Good.
Kenny Schrader
Good family. Good kid. Got his heart and soul in that place. Invested. Invested a lot of time and effort and financial commitment, I was told. Stremi sent me some video of the people in the grandstands early and stuff. Great turnout. Very, you know, not good track conditions Friday night. But Matt, you know, standing up there and saying, hey, who's got. Who can help? What do we. What do we need to do? And Mark Richards from Rocket Chassis and a bunch of other people stepped up. Worked basically all night, I'm told. Got back on it Saturday morning, made the track a lot better. I watched Saturday's race. They were running all over it. It wasn't like you'd want it to be, but they put on a good show, and it was substantially better. And I think it was a great weekend for the facility. A family jumped in there Saturday night, Friday night paid $12,000 to win, and they bumped it up to $100,000 to win with an $88,000 contribution to the purse. And Saturday night, it paid 57,000 to win, and they Bumped it up to 100,000. $57. You know, a very trying weekend for Mansfield, but I would have to say a very successful weekend. And it just shows the amount of effort that they're willing to put into the facility. I think it was. I think it was good. Tyler Herb one Friday night, and convincingly, I can just see it. But I think he let it all the whole way. And I was watching. That was Friday night. I was watching Saturday night, and your buddy little. Little Nick there, they had a yellow with not a whole lot to go, and he was. He had got the second. Was in second most of the race. And it's like, I'm sorry. I think it was Garrett Albertson. He said, I'm sorry. I need to go now. And nick got that $100,000 Saturday night. So good racing, good effort. Glad for them all.
Herman Schrader
Okay. I'm going to come at this from a different standpoint. First of all, well said. If you stand up and you. And you defend the track being bad, like we're doing, you know, but when. When you Admit guilt like Matt Tiff did. That was a brilliant move. Hey, I love the way you said it, Kenny. You know, everybody knows Matt. Matt said, I put $8 million into this. It looks like he did. But when you admit, hey, I'm in trouble, it's amazing how everybody wants to help, but if you fight the establishment and go, hey, just run around my rough track. But because Matt Tiff admitted, hey, we're in trouble, I'm like you, Kenny. Everybody came to the rescue.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, you know, I don't think it's a. I don't think it's a brilliant move. It's just. It's just doing what you're supposed to do, you know, hey, this place is not good. What are we gonna do? You know, so. And. And the competitors. And I heard Steve Francis helped spearhead with the World Outlaws, but, you know, they got in there and they. They helped it as much as they possibly could in a day, and they will get it better yet, I do
Herman Schrader
want to say this, Dietz. This was the third race on this racetrack surface, and they dealt with massive rain, not making an excuse for him. Dietz, you know, you're part of it all. What do you have to add to that unbelievable two days up there at this new racetrack?
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Well, I think it. I think everything that you guys said is correct. And the simplest thing is, is they will fix it. It'll be fixed. And. And I think, you know, owning up to it. These are growing pains. I mean, this is something that's. That happens at any racetrack that's being resurfaced or. Or if it's new or whatever. That is an important part of the country. That was an important racetrack that needed to come back. Whether it was dirt or pavement, it needed to come back, and they've got the right family and the right people behind it that that track will be fine. And I think they took what could have been an absolutely catastrophic weekend and. And turned it into something very, very positive.
Herman Schrader
Kenny, I just want to say this at the very end, this is the last thing I have to say about Mansfield. Matt Tift, he showed everything he was doing during this rebuild, and he said, look, we're putting massive effort in. We. We bought this dirt. We had a geologist look at this dirt. This is good dirt. I mean, just. Is it good dirt? What do they got to do to make that dirt bind? What do you know?
Kenny Schrader
I don't. They got to work on. Yeah, they got. Well, they got it. They got a compact it big time. But let me tell you a real Quick Matt Tiff story. They're starting to start cars already.
Herman Schrader
Okay.
Kenny Schrader
So he comes. Him and his daddy sitting in my office. This before he drove our car, he said, I want to run the ARCA races, and I want to run some truck, and I run Xfinity and cop. And he was young. And I said, man, you're. You. You. There's something wrong with your head. You know, just. Just jacking with him. Well, then, however many years later, he has brain tumor.
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And he sends me a picture. Mri, I guess he said, you were right.
Herman Schrader
There's something that's good.
Kenny Schrader
It's in my phone. I can show you the before and after.
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
He said, there is something wrong with my head. So I called him, and, you know, he successfully went through all that. Then he sends me a picture after they removed it. And there's just. There's just a hole. There's just a hole there.
Herman Schrader
Wow.
Kenny Schrader
And we text him, man, I hope there was nothing really important in that part of your brain. And he just. He just. It's good family. Good kid. Right. Good to see them own that place.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. And save dirt racing even more up in that area. Kenny, it pains me to say this, but I got to throw something in there that is news. Our partner, Bob Sargent, has you and I going to Peoria, Illinois, on June 11. But Peoria is saying that the promoter said we're done, but right over the road, we had something that was kind of sad that I didn't. I guess I did see it coming. Spoon river at 5:30, had 12 complete cars. And they said, we're not racing tonight. We don't have enough cars. So you have Spoon river say, we can't race. We don't have enough cars. And they showed the picture. There was, like, three cars in each division. And then. And then Peoria says we're done. They're going to run one more race. June 11 at Peoria Summer national race.
Kenny Schrader
Just your.
Herman Schrader
You know, you're the mayor of dirt racing. What's going on in that area?
Kenny Schrader
Well, first off, the Internet.
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
Social media that, you know, everybody that has a phone, it's like, hey, I didn't like this Saturday night. I was sitting in the grandstands, and I didn't like this. So I'm gonna tell everybody I didn't like it. That's not helping. The cost of what it costs to run these cars is not helping. The cost of what it costs to get to the racetrack. For the fans and the competitors, the cost of food at the race. Right. Cost of food everywhere. It's just everything cost a lot now some of the tracks have had more problems than others. That's. That's for sure. Spoon river is, you know, it's out in the middle of nowhere. It's hard, literally. It's. It's hard to draw for that track. People and cars. It's, it's. It's been there for a long time. Hopefully it stays for a long time. But they, it's not the first time they've had struggles there. So we just got to see. Peoria was a big place for a long time. Our sports changing. They're going through some little issues right now. Looking forward to the 11th going up there. Run the UMP Summer Nationals along with you. And hell, there'll be 35 modifieds, guarantee you so it'll be good. But man, it's just, it's. It's like any other business. It's not easy.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. Thank you for that. I, I know that was a difficult subject, but it is a way to let everybody know you and I are going to be up there.
Kenny Schrader
But with that said, now this was two weeks, two Saturdays ago, Saturday got rained out. We're up in Michigan, get rained out. Said, hell, let's just go to Peebley. There won't be but 18 modifieds. We'll go there even if we got get there late. Gotta start the back. We pull in. There's 33 modifieds and 39B mods. So in a full field of four 10 wing sprint cars. So it's just, it's hard to figure out.
Herman Schrader
It really is. And dirt racers can justify things in their own strange way. I'm not going here because it pays too much money to win and Schrader's gonna be there and I don't want to race. Pays lesser. They do some goofy.
Kenny Schrader
I, I was, I was not up on the world outlaw sprint. I got something covering something. Okay. I was not up out on the world outlaw Sprint cars this weekend. What all happened there, do we know?
Herman Schrader
I think the. The 83 packer car won. Yeah. At Houston's maybe. That's all I got. We do our best, everybody. Okay, Dietz, I like to get you involved in that conversation because you're such a local racer. What's your thoughts on that?
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
You know, I, I just want to mention, you know, in my part of the world here in the Carolinas, Steve Zacharias, who's over at Florence Motor Speedway, he was at Myrtle beach when, when it got sold, went Florence bought it and had a honeymoon. Period there for a while. And then the same thing started happening there. And Pavement Racing east i95 in the Carolinas is. Is in bad shape on. On the same night, 45 minutes apart, you can have 50 cars at Florence and 100 cars at Lakeview or at Sumter. So anyway, I told Steve, I said, there's three things that you can do with this racetrack. You can sell it to somebody, you can close it completely, or you can put dirt on it and make it a dirt track. That's the only way you're going to make money on it is if, if you do that. And, and he. A couple of weeks ago, these rumors started going around about Florence being for sale. And he said, Florence is. Is not for sale, but if somebody comes to me or to anybody else with enough money, everything is for sale. So anyway, where I'm going with this is, is, you know, somebody else could buy that racetrack and they are not going to put the blood, sweat and tears into it that Steve and his entire family have put into. Ain't going to work. I don't care who owns Dale Jr. Get on it, and it ain't going to work. And Dale Junior's gone and raced at Florence and helped it out the best he could because he knows how important it is to have that racetrack survive and have it keep going. So I guess, long story short, where I'm going with this is when you mention those racetracks, sometimes I don't care what you do or how you do it, where that racetrack is located, how the community is doing financially, if people are making money or not making money, there's so much that goes into it and sometimes you just cannot make it work. I mean, and that's a shame and it's sad, but it's a fact.
Herman Schrader
Well said. And that's a grown up version, and I like it. Yes, well said. You and Kenny kind of said the same things, you know, spoon rivers in the middle of nowhere. Okay, it is that time. What do you got for jokes?
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Okay, here we go. Why don't side. Why don't scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything. Okay, Adams. Make it. Okay.
Herman Schrader
True.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
What do you call a fake noodle?
Herman Schrader
A fake nude.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
An imposter.
Herman Schrader
That's reaching.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
Okay. Why did the belt get arrested?
Herman Schrader
Oh, I think I just heard this.
Kenny Schrader
Damn it.
Herman Schrader
Go ahead.
Dietz (Co-host/Announcer)
It held up a pair of pants.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. Good stuff. Good stuff. All right, Kenny Schrader. Thank you. Yes.
Kenny Schrader
I tell you what. You know what, you know what I like about the. What I like about those jokes is as bad as their show is, it makes it look better.
Herman Schrader
Sometimes when jokes are so dumb and you start laughing, it's like, that's so dumb. Kenny, do good up there. You told us what you're up to, so I won't say, what are you getting ready to do? So that's. That's a big deal up there. What's the name of that race? Do we have a name?
Kenny Schrader
Independence Motor Speedway. All right, Mike. Mike Van Gendron doing the track and it's his promotion and he does a great job, so. Looking forward to it. Then Lincoln. Lincoln Friday.
Herman Schrader
Oh, damn.
Kenny Schrader
I like that.
Herman Schrader
Okay, we'll do good. I'll see everybody at Peebley on Saturday and. All right, everybody, until the next Herman Schrader show. Goodbye, everybody. Check out Dirty Mo Media on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.

Podcast: Herm & Schrader
Hosts: Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader
Episode Date: June 3, 2026
Produced by: SiriusXM, Dirty Mo Media
Summary by: [Podcast Summarizer]
This episode captures the lively, irreverent, and deeply knowledgeable banter between NASCAR veterans Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader, joined by their recurring co-host "Dietz." Broadcasting from St. Louis and a literal cornfield in Iowa, the two Kennys dissect Denny Hamlin’s 62nd NASCAR Cup win, the evolving tire game, the shifting TV landscape for NASCAR, safety advances, silly season rumors, and the realities of both dirt and pavement racing. Stories, rapid-fire insights, and their uniquely unfiltered Midwest humor abound, making this both a fun and highly informative listen for racing fans.
"Nothing, nothing—nothing but cornfields, race car haulers, race tracks." — Schrader (03:21)
"I'm not a fan of concrete tracks ... But Nashville has had some fabulous races. ... Those cars are really showing out at some different places." — Schrader (07:00)
"We want a tire that gives up and has faded ... that's why these races have been watchable and likable." — Schrader (08:35)
"Prime's doing excellent. I wish they had more races." — Dietz (11:30)
"They could not have explained the issue with the brake caliper last night any better." — Dietz (11:12)
"I don't want to think about it. It's ugly. But it's a lot better with the new seats and safer barriers and the Hans device." — Schrader (14:14)
"Means somebody got to have a calculator." — Schrader (17:30)
"One thing our sport never had a problem with is shortage of up-and-coming, really good drivers." — Schrader (21:27)
"I'm all about the racing, but our times have changed. We got to add more stuff ... the more of those guys we can have involved in our sport, the better." — Schrader (24:35)
"Every combination doesn't work. You got to find one that does." — Schrader (28:50)
"Victor Lane will do that to you." — Schrader (35:51)
"There's a lot of good people in our sport ... you have to be a pretty good person for people to want to help you. We got a lot of really good people involved in our sport." — Schrader (38:55)
"You always win them the same way. You go the total distance first. That's how you win them." — Schrader (41:07)
"If you admit guilt like Matt Tifft did, that was a brilliant move. ... everybody came to the rescue." — Wallace (47:34)
"It's not easy. It's like any other business." — Schrader (54:39)
"Where that racetrack is located, how the community is doing financially ... sometimes you just cannot make it work. That's a shame, and it's sad, but it's a fact." — Dietz (57:30)
"Why don't scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything." — Dietz (58:47)
Herm & Schrader once again deliver a mix of nostalgia, sharp takes, and grassroots perspective. Both hosts show deep appreciation for racing traditions, celebrate Hamlin’s resilience, endorse the value of tire degradation in racing, and weigh in — candidly — on NASCAR’s broadcast future and sport’s shifting economics. Woven throughout: lively storytelling, respect for the next generation, a focus on the changing state of local dirt and asphalt tracks, and a reminder never to count out resourceful, persistent racers or promoters — and definitely, never count out Denny Hamlin.
