Bob Sargent is one of the best race track promoters in America, and he has such a pulse on all aspects of racing that we had to talk with him for a second time!

Hello everyone and welcome back to Kenny Conversation, brought to you by i55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway park right here, 15 minutes from my house in PE, Missouri. And make sure you you check us out racing every Saturday night. And the man I have that you're looking at right now, he knows about that local racing. My dear friend and partner in crime, Bob Sargent. Bob, how you doing?
Bob Sargent
I'm good. Kenny Wallace. How are you today?
Kenny Wallace
Well, I'm smiling because you and I talked on Sunday night and I know and you know what we're going to talk about and we're gonna, we're gonna put the headlines out there but then we're gonna back up a little bit. So Bob, you run the Nashville Speedway, the fairgrounds and right, right there by Nashville you had a really big weekend. Just give us a little synopsis and then we'll. I want to see what you've been up to and then we'll dig right back into it.
Bob Sargent
Synopsis. I mean pictures say a million words. I mean it's full grandstands, full field of cars. Two are late models, two divisions. Just you know, exciting night with Dale junior Racing and you know that's the quick synopsis of what it was. We just picture a four hour promoters and full grandstands are what we, you know, what we strive for. And then right up there with full grandstands is a good entertainment or good product and good racing. So we had it all.
Kenny Wallace
Awesome. Okay everybody, that's what we are going to talk about and I want to let everybody know that we did a great Kenny conversation with Bob Sergeant so you can go back through the Kenny Wallace YouTube show and find out all, all about Bob. We went through his whole career but right now it's all about local racing. But more so the Dale Jr. Effect, the Chase Elliot effect, Cletus McFarland throwback. Bob, you, you own and run track enterprise. Can you give us an update on you and what you're promoting right now? What's hot, what's not?
Bob Sargent
Well I mean this is spring, we're just getting started but you know we, we promote so many different events and types of races, types of facilities from dirt to asphalt to big to small all the way from our four cylinder ump cars to the NASCAR level. So we're blessed fortunate to be able to do that kind of demographic and variety in what track enterprises does. So you know sometimes it takes a little bit of time to explain all that but because there's so much on our plate that again we're fortunate to get to do it all and man we're just again feel blessed.
Kenny Wallace
I always like to follow up with you Bob because you have the pulse on racing throughout America and we witnessed something the week after Easter. It seemed like the week after Easter, things get bigger. I was talking to our other partner, Kenny Schrader, about this, and he said, one of his friends said, my wife says you need to cut the grass two times before you go racing. Is there anything to that? Starting racing after Easter, you know, we hear all that.
Bob Sargent
I mean, we hear it even after Memorial Day, you know, so, you know, and stop at Labor Day and, you know, this. The bumper sticker. This marriage is on pause for the racing season. You know, you can't get. Can't do anything during the racing season. And what is that window, man? Kenny, that window's changed in our grassroots part. You know, now we're racing at Cordial, Georgia in January and. And all the dirt racing in Daytona and Fina in Arizona, west coast and again, PRI in December. I mean, this window that we used to play with has definitely expanded.
Kenny Wallace
Yeah, good stuff. Okay, let's get into this. Last weekend, it was super big, and there's just so much to talk about. I say the big three, and I feel strong about it. We had your racetrack, Nashville Fairgrounds, right outside of Nashville, Tennessee. And then we had Cletus McFarland's Freedom Factory down in Bradenton, Florida. And then we had the Heritage Invitational with IROC over there in Charlotte, North Carolina. In my mind, all three present something that makes me, you know, just look and I. I find it wonderful. I think it's a good thing. All of them have a throwback feel. You know, Iraq is about the past. Nashville is a fairgrounds that you are trying to save. You're fighting a big fight. We bring. You bring Dale Jr. In standing room only, crowd on feet, shoulder to shoulder. So this whole combination. You, Cletus, Iraq speak to that. Do. Do you see that? Or it's just. Just something in. In the air.
Bob Sargent
I don't want to burst your bubble, but I. You want me to be honest? I mean, I just think it's something in the air for this weekend, this. This couple weeks here. I think racing, our foundation has always been exciting. It's always been an entertainment stop. It's always been at our events, we get grandpa coming with his. His son and grandson. We get. Generations are still coming. Your. Our part, our other partner, Ken Schrader. You know, sometimes we have big events like this and. And we all look at each other and say, it's not. It's not dead. You know, the Internet has provided us a place to present a lot of doom and gloom, and I've just not felt that's ever been There we are dealing with challenges, just like a restaurant or a corporate 500, you know, company would deal with. You know, there's always challenges. And I feel society is moving quickly. It changes. Gas prices are high today and the stock market's high. And then a week from now, a month from now to be lower. And, and fast food places, convenience stores are changing their style of how to distribute to the customer. And again, we have that phone on us constantly. So life, societies change, changing. And I think our sport is going to follow that suit. I mean, you've seen the world of outlaws just be so exciting. Full grandstands, you know, Daytona 500 sold out. So again, this weekend was phenomenal. It was great. I agree with you on that. But it's capable of continuing that and having these big events for, for a long time. And we as stewards just have to be good enough to present to the fans what they want. We, as promoters and even you guys, drivers, the, the media, we get caught up sometimes. I feel we get caught up sometimes in the, the debates and the arguments over which tire to run. Do you want to run 11 inch tire, 10 inch tire? Do you want to run a 360 or a 410? I think in reality, that that's a small microcosm of what we're dealing with. You know, that's what we have to deal with because that's our foundation and we have to decide on the engines and things. But Saturday night at Nashville, those kids, those families in the grandstand, they didn't care what engines were running, they didn't care what tires were running, they didn't care. They enjoyed the atmosphere, the fun of 32 race cars being out there. They. The fact that their hero, Dale Jr. Was racing, that's what they were there for. So that's saying a lot to answer your question. But that's what I'm trying to get. This. This is a very complex whole formula that we're putting together, and it takes all that.
Kenny Wallace
No, I love that, Bob. That's what, that's what I think we all want to hear. Let's stay right there. I got so much to ask. The Dale Earnhardt Jr. Effect. I was watching it on Flow, so this is not me. I was listening to the announcers, and I'm going to repeat what the announcer said. The announcer says, oh, my gosh, this is unbelievable. Dale Jr. Is running 15th to 20th. He's passing a car and the crowd is going crazy, as if he's taking the lead. Just speak to this, this Dale Jr. Effect. We all know it. But I'm just saying you were there. Tell me what you saw and heard,
Bob Sargent
exactly what you heard from the announcers. I, I saw the people too. And I thought, is he. I run around enough where I'm doing things, picking up garbage, getting other things. I don't watch every lap, so I'm looking at it and they are positioned on the track good enough where it's just those two cars and I'm wondering if he's not passing for the lead the way the crowd was cheering. So it was just great. But that goes to Dale Jr. I mean, again, he's our hero. He, he carries himself so well. I watched him go and give autographs along the fence line that he didn't have to do. I mean, he is really a great ambassador for our sport. So we're very fortunate to be able to work with him on many fronts with the series. And then he comes to Nashville. So that is a given. But you're giving me a minute, Kenny, and I'm going to talk. I'm going to give you, I'm going to give you and your, your, your partner, Mr. Schrader a lot of credit. Don't forget how long ago when we started our NASCAR nights and we were taking you to facilities, long autograph lines, same thing. The people came there to see you guys. And I know that started well before that with, you know, you know, all the, the, the people that would go to short tracks and sign autographs. But I just encourage the NASCAR drivers of this age to go do that, get close to these fans. I mean, again, I saw Dale Jr. Do it Saturday night, go up to the fence and, and just, you know, just. He didn't have to do that. And I think that's what these fans are longing for. They don't get it so much in major league sports, in baseball, and they may not get at a NASCAR race. But again, I'm going to use the word blessed or lucky. I mean, I'm, I'm sitting here, I've always said, in a good niche that I feel I'm a notch below the cup level. And we're grassroots and we can take care of 12,000 people or, you know, three weeks ago, we were fortunate to be at Hickory motor speedway, an arca east race full of cars, 4,000 to 5,000.
Kenny Wallace
Great race, by the way.
Bob Sargent
Great race. The drivers did their job and the people left so happy. You know, we had a big autograph session. You know, Cletus's right hand guy there, George. I mean, they Would love to see him. Destiny. A new driver. A female driver. So again, back to what I've seen. They didn't care what tires those cars were on a hickory. They didn't care what engines were in those cars. They came to have a good time and they had a good time. So everybody's happy when we leave, you know. And don't forget, the weather was good at all these events. But. But, you know, just again, another little throw in there of how much it takes to make these things work, right?

Kenny Wallace
Are we missing is one. We're just talking. We're just talking. I'm not trying to convince you of anything. Do we miss the Winston RJR days where they went to hundreds of local racetracks and put that scoreboard up there? Because, you know, I, I love racing. I just love it. So I still race, you know, and I race all over America and so does our partner, Kenny Schrader. When I listen to you talk, it seems like we're missing some of these superstars. I'm not saying moonlighting, but where are the autograph sessions, you know, you know, our NASCAR nights were Schrader and myself and Dale Jr. And Tony Stewart, Casey Kane, and we were signing autographs, you know, on a Wednesday night at Macon Speedway. I don't see that anymore. Do, do the fans, they don't bike for those autograph sessions or just superstars
Bob Sargent
like Dale Jr. Oh, they, the fans still bite for that. They love it. All the weekday shows we used to do. But you're right, I mean, in, in the, the driver's defense, they are very busy. I mean, it's not like they're Taking the day, the week off and doing nothing. They, they've, I've seen their calendars or X, X, X for sponsor engagements. And so I just think everything's gotten very busy and, and time is so valuable. So that's been a little bit of it that we're all working through. And again, I, I, I don't even want to paint any doom and gloom because it's going great. So I just mentioned that the more that the stars can come out. I mean, Chase Elliott's been great to go to tracks Kyle Busches went to tons of. I mean, these guys are going. I just wanted to remind everybody that, that the fans, we are fortunate to have a great sport, a great product in green flag to checkered flag, but the fans are demanding more.
Kenny Wallace
Once again, everybody, we're talking to Bob Sargent, the owner of Track Enterprise. Bob runs the Nashville Fairgrounds, runs a lot of racing series, promotes a lot of events. The promoter of the year. What, how many? What about three, four years ago? Bob, Time flies. When did, let me just say this. When did you win the promoter of the year?
Bob Sargent
2011, Kenny? A lot more than two years ago. Yeah, we're all getting.
Kenny Wallace
Oh, my God. Well, listen, everybody, just an update. That's Bob Sargent. In our world, everybody knows Bobby promotes everything. He's got his pulse on American auto racing. Okay, let's stay right here in Nashville. I know it's like Larry mcrel say we're beating this like a dead horse, but I'm just amazed that Marcus Smith will not give up on this. I would have given up on the Nashville fairgrounds. Why? And I know you can't speak for him. I'm not wanting to insult your intelligence without getting yourself in trouble, and I know you won't. Why is Marcus Smith pounding the drum so hard at this Nashville fairgrounds? Why doesn't he give up?
Bob Sargent
You're gonna have to ask Marcus Smith that one. No, I mean, the little I do know of him and I know is the people that work under him really well. And, you know, they just are on a mission. They want to put a NASCAR track there and have a Cup race. And, you know, God love them. I mean, we'll see what happens. The council's mixed right now. I think there it's, you know, goes positive, negative a lot. There's a lot of ups and downs. The neighbors are concerned about traffic and noise. The soccer stadium owners concerned about competition. So there's a lot of factors that go into this. And again, I think Marcus and SMI and Bristol just They, they put their efforts toward having a, a NASCAR race there and that's where their efforts are still at.
Kenny Wallace
So I, I, I find it interesting and I don't expect you to answer all this because you're in the game. You are there, you are running the track. I find it interesting in a great way that Marcus is out there at the Nashville Super Speedway, an hour away from the fairgrounds. I mean, we got two tracks an hour from each other. I raced at them both. But that fairgrounds is a gem. You know, it's the heart of country music. Everybody in America is moving to Nashville. There's no doubt. I hear all the stories. It's entertainment. But it's becoming toxic. There's so many people there. We got the new football, I mean the football stadium right there off the highway. Is Nashville getting too crowded, Bob, or we are along for the ride. Tell me about Nashville.
Bob Sargent
The city, well, it's grown, it's growing. It's just, you know, the first day I went down, there was 21 cranes building. I mean it's just amazing. It just keeps going and growing. And the, the city managers, the, the people that run the city I think have a great plan. I get along with a lot of the, the, the city council members and the, the mayor. We've had several different mayors. The fair board's great to work with. So again, Nashville is just big. I mean, I think what you said about we're along for the ride. We are, we're along for the ride. We try to position ourselves to where we fit on that bus. You know, we want a seat at the table and we want to seat on that ride and we just position ourselves, we work with the facility, the, the fairgrounds itself. New billion dollar soccer stadium or million dollar soccer, millions of dollars soccer stadium, apartment buildings, plans for that footprint. The parking is really narrowing, but that's the city of Nashville also. So again we, we're dealing with what we're dealt with there. You know, that versus Madison, Wisconsin or you know, different. We, I don't know how many states we're in, how many tracks we do now, but I'm fortunate to get to see a lot of different layouts and different facilities. And this is just a different layout than a lot of racing facilities. But the support in Nashville is unbelievable. They love their racing, they love their, their events. Whether it's downtown on Broadway with Tootsies are great sponsor, or at the Titans stadium or wherever they're going in Nashville. They're all out, they're supportive. We have, I Notice a lot of variation and different. You have the locals that have been there for. For the time, you know, when. When Sterling Marlin and Darrell Waltrip drove there. And you've got the new people that just moved to Nashville that want to see, you know, the local guys race. So we have a little bit of everything. And I think that's what I like about it.
Kenny Wallace
The new hot superstar, Ella Langley. Choosing Texas. I mean, all that is the city of Nashville. Do you feel that at the fairgrounds when there's a superstar and, you know, I've drove around Nashville a lot and I see all these record labels around there. Do you feel that or are you just in your own world?
Bob Sargent
I think in general, we do not feel it. We're there at a fairgrounds, we're racing. But we do have a lot of tentacles off of that. Again, tootsies, right downtown Broadway.
Kenny Wallace
That's why I bring it up. Talking about the bars.
Bob Sargent
So that does help. Scott Borchett, as a big race fan. So big machine label, you know, vodka, they all participate in the racetrack. Curb Records, I go on down the whole list of people that have made a lot of money in Nashville. They do participate with us as supporters, sponsors, fans of racing. But we probably don't feel the effect of the Nashville downtown nightlife coming to the racetrack. But it gets a great incentive for series. The cars tour said all their drivers are staying and going downtown after the race. So it's a destination point for race fans to come and go to the races. And then they get to do Nashville on the side.
Kenny Wallace
Bingo. That's where I was. That's where I was headed, you know, years ago. It's like, let's go to Vegas after the race is over. We're going to go to the casino. We're going to see the shows. It seems like Nashville is that, you know, I live in St. Louis, you live up there in Macon. And you and I, we. We end up getting going down 24. And, you know, you, you, you know, from St. Louis, it's 64, 57, 24. And then if I'm going to Charlotte, I get on 40. I've run those highways my whole life. I think of Ronnie Millsap, you know, all his great songs. But when I get close to Nashville now, I, I go ahead and I pass the Briley Expressway up, and I'm like, should I take the Bradley Expressway to go over to 40? And when I get to Spaghetti Junction there to the right, the Tennessee Titans, you know, dome, it feels like it's over. The highway now it's just got this behemoth. It's like, holy moly. I feel. I feel like this. I feel like this dome is on the highway. Is there any talk in the city since we're talking how tight it is around the fairgrounds, the soccer stadium? Have you heard anything about spaghetti junction? I mean, are they ever going to be able to fix that? Or. I mean, I can't imagine them shutting it down. What's the deal right there?
Bob Sargent
I can't answer all that about that. You're right. They've got to do some work on that. But again, the city fathers, there's. There's plans, and they're smart, they're making progress, and. And I think it just grew so big. I mean, not only the stadium, but just the buildings and the skyscraper. Just everything that's popped up and they're buying and building with cranes about every corner you can look at. So, yeah, that's it.
Kenny Wallace
That's the reason I asked the question. I'm like, you know, my dad used to say they don't have enough infrastructure here. I'm like, you got to quit building. We can't get the car. We can't get the daily drivers through Interstate 24 on the 40 right now. So, you know, just a thought. With everybody moving to Nashville. Okay, Bob, listen, thanks a lot for that. The Dale Jr. Effect is awesome. And I do want to add this. You said something that I really admire that you considered. NASCAR cup series. Our superstars, they're. They're doing what they call sim. Now, they need the drivers in the race shop on Tuesdays and Wednesdays because the drivers, they simulate a real race car. And these machines, you know, they work. It's like a flight simulator, learning how to fly an airplane. Do you hear about that? You, you know, you're saying the cup drivers are busy.
Bob Sargent
I do hear about it. I do. We'll try to do a Tuesday night race at Madison or Kona. You know, we'll do. And they say they. They can't get there. They've got. They got to do sim. I mean, this is just one more duty, one more thing on their calendar that they have to do. And it's very important. I mean, we've run into that with trying to get a lot of drivers of that level to come to our races. They. They just can't. And that's just one more day, you know, between a sponsor day, the sim day, or two days. Their calendars are very busy.

I feel like this is a hot subject, everybody, and here's why. I'm going to really push the button right now. And we're having fun. We're having fun. Why in the world is Wilkes Pearl back and Rockingham back? And this is the way my mind thinks, okay, you know, I, I talk with our partner Schrader, and he blows everything off and everything's just the way it is. I'm like, no, Kenny, it's not the way it is. Why is Wilkesboro back? Why is Rockingham back? Why did you Sweet just put 12,000 people in Nashville? Bob, I know it's a loaded question, the best you can. What the hell is going on?
Bob Sargent
I don't mind answering. I mean, I, I feel, and it's just my little opinion here, but I think nascar, Ben Kennedy and the whole team has done a great job because you just mentioned some places where they're going and it's back. But don't forget, they're going to San Diego. They went to, to la, they went to Chicago. Good balance of the country. They're doing everything. I just think they're brilliant in what they're doing. And the fans, they listen to the fans. So I guess to answer your question, I think, why is it back? The fans asked for it back and there's still some more maybe to pop up. So the fans asked for it. I think we all listen to it. The state of North Carolina has done a great job in helping these facilities. So these facilities take a lot of money to keep them updated for just the normal amenities, but definitely for safety with safer walls, lights, everything. That North Wilkesboro and in Rockingham, the state of North Carolina deserves a great amount of credit for all that. And then, you know, the other people and been several people involved, it takes a lot to do that. So. But again, the fans asked for it, they were clamoring for it. They didn't like the mile and a half, whatever you want to read, wherever they don't like the seven day stays in hotels, we hear it all. And I think NASCAR listened. And again, I'm lucky to be right in this little niche where I can, I like doing these things, whether it's Terre Haute or Milwaukee or whatever. We've always done making. It's just, it's just, it's gratifying to see the fans come and support things like this.
Kenny Wallace
One thing that I'm not saying they got lost people in the business, you know, it's one thing Rockingham, you know, been gone for years or Wilkesboro, but the cities felt it too. North Wilkesboro, North Wilkes, Rockingham, you know, they just, they, they shuddered. They shut down. So, you know, I was at Bristol over the weekend. Marcus Smith, Brian Hammond, they work on entertainment. Bob, you and I have said it. The people want to be entertained. So, you know, we got this trackside live show. It's an hour show. We go behind the main grandstands. I do it at 11 races. The other one is right here in St. Louis. One could say that Chris Blair started the Confluence Music Festival. They just want to be entertained. So with that, Marcus Smith, Brian Hammond, they pulled me to the side Sunday after the show. They said, herman, we're going to take track side live downtown Wilkesboro Saturday night, Sunday. Can you stay over and can you call Rusty? Because this is the first points race. We're going to try to get all the drivers back. Bob, speak to the city's shuttering and the cities is Rockingham. Is Rockingham jacked up that you brought some racing back there?
Bob Sargent
Absolutely. I said something about the state providing a lot of funding. The city, the, the people there, the city manager, the county manager, but you know, Monte Crump with the city, they do a thing on Thursday. I like money on Thursday night called Thunder Fest. They brought in this year the a large name band. They have food vendors and it's a true festival with live music that they did back in the days. So Monty and his staff resurrected that and it's part of the Rockingham weekend. We've been there two years now, both very successful. But Thursday night kicks it off. You and Kenny Schrader came the first year we had some other. Our drivers go there for autographs that did a great job and helping support us and the fans really enjoy that. But again, I guess it is a lot more throwback. I mean, that's what they used to do. But it really helps the city both economically in spirits. They enjoy this. They take a lot of pride in it. They have the rock back. The Rockingham Speedway, the dragway is going very well there. So maybe things go in cycles also, I don't know. But these things are being rejuvenated with a lot of support from a lot of people, whether it be volunteers, the local community themselves that come to buy tickets, the city management, Monty and everybody. So they're just being supported. And it all goes back to they did lose it at one point and it did not vote well for them. They fought hard to keep it, but for many reasons they lost it and now they got it back and they want to keep hold of it.
Kenny Wallace
They literally make songs about this. You know, don't it always seem to go? We don't know what we got till it's gone. They paved paradise and put in a parking lot. That is a really good song and it speaks volumes. But with Marcus Smith and Brian Hammond saying, hey, Kenny, we're going to do Trackside Live, a good one hour show with all the cup drivers. We're going to do it on Saturday night, in the races on Sunday, but we're going to do it downtown. You know, I've been downtown Nashville, right there on Broadway Street. They blocked it off. They put a big stage up. I guess 10 years ago we did that. These cities don't mind having Speed Fest downtown. And when Schrader and I were at Rockingham last year. And by the way, everybody, the man you're looking at or listening to right now, Bob Sergeant, correct me if I'm wrong, but you run Rockingham, I feel like, you know, I'm sure there's somebody owns it. Where, by the way, straighten me out. Where's Rockingham right now? Who bought it? Who owns it?
Bob Sargent
Daryl Cuttle bought it. Buying facilities, doing sanctioning bodies, mainly drag racing, powerboats, they do a lot of things, but so hopefully we're all working together well and we'll keep promoting this NASCAR race.
Kenny Wallace
Okay, that was short and sweet. I appreciate it and I understand where is track enterprise. I said what's hot, what's not. But I want to. You know, we got a little talking to do yet and I'm saving it right now. But as far as you, Bob, is ASA still A thing. Where are we at with late model stock super late models? I hear you talk about the 10 inch tire, the 11 inch tire, you know, late. Dale Jr. Likes the late model stock little smaller, super late models a little bigger. Where are we at with everything you're promoting and what's still going?
Bob Sargent
Yeah, I mean, I tell you, we've done a ton of dirt things, a ton of dirt races. Ump the late models, the modifieds, worked with Brian Carter, World of Outlaws. We started doing asphalt a little bit more about three or four years ago, more and more. Did a lot of ORCA races at Elko, Minnesota on some asphalt and just had a chance to work with RJ Scott, Glenn Luckett with the CRA division. They had a pro late model and a super late model and some in street stocks and Sportsman. But so we took the super late model and the pro late model and just tried to expand a little bit. Work with Greg McCarns at Midwest Tour, Tim Bryant at Southern super series. So now we've got three regional series. And the fans, we listen to the fans. They were clamoring for a national series. So we started the ASA Stars tour. Yeah, super late models, 12 races a year. Great events. We're going to Dominion. We've been to Pensacola this year already and New Smyrna. Great drivers, great. I tell everybody that product's good too. So Todd Majeski won our championship. Cole Butcher. We have some real names running in it. Bubba Pollard, Stephen Nass, he goes on down the list. It's a good series that. Just similar to what we raced at Nashville. The CARS Tour, Junior and Kevin, they're kind of in the Southeast now. Kevin's in the west with the CARS Tour. We've kind of got the middle covered. From Wisconsin down through Indiana, through Georgia, Florida, Nashville. So these are pavement late models of what we're calling them. Very similar. We all work together in the series. The CARS Tour with Kip Childers and all these three regions that I do. And Marty Melo MDM Promotions has now taken over the Stars ASA series and I'm more of consultant, helping them out and promoting some of the races.

Kenny Wallace
Bob, you brought up Greg McCarn's name. His father was a legend. Ran the Artco series. I ran a little bit on little 10 inch tires, same motor, but you know, two barrel carburetor. The great Dick Trickle and all the Wisconsin guys, they're like, hey, can we have a Tuesday Wednesday show? And ardco was really good at that. ASA would rule on the weekends, that was the main series. And during the weekdays we'd have a 2 barrel carburetor, 10 inch tire, kind of a street tire. Dick Trickle and Butch Miller and all those boys, they made a living racing during the summer almost six days a week. Now where I'm going with this is about entertainment. Greg McCarns was at Cletus McFarlane's Freedom Factory this weekend. And I looked at this guy and I'm like, I know that guy, but, but he has a hat on. So the next day goes over and there's Greg McCarns on social media. Great time. I said oh my God, that was you, Greg. He said a lot of moving parts. He's been to 253 racetracks. So here's my question to you. I feel like Greg was going down there not just to be at the racetrack but to check it out. When I grew up as a child, my dad, Russ Wallace raced and you know, this is funny because Joey Chitwood, you know, he would call me because he was the president at Daytona International Motor Speedway. What the did Joey Chitwood Thrill Show. They'd come to your racetrack commercial. What you know, you'd get concession. Okay everybody, we're taking a break. We're taking a break and we're going to have the Joey Chitwood Thrill Show. My question to you after I laid this out is are the fans clamoring for entertainment during intermission? Do they do want to see, do they want the old days back where the, the bus flies through the air and smashes into a bus. Or do. I mean it seems like cars going in circles a little boring at times. What's your thought on that?
Bob Sargent
Your question, your answer to your question is yes, they're longing for it. The problem is we do. We also. They long to be a very strict time limit when they're in those grandstands, so only have so much time at a car race. So sometimes there isn't enough literally minutes on the clock to get them out of the racetrack between 9:30 and 10:15 to have a big intermission show. But what they are clamoring for, as you were there and yes, that's why Greg was there. He's a student of these things. He's a true promoter. He's a true promoter. And my guess is Greg didn't go down there to buy a ticket just to watch. He was definitely taking notes. And you know, I think he was at the speed drill on Saturday night. He was supposed to come to Nashville but he, you know, he picked and choose where he could go on his day off where he does so many races. But where I was going at is the thrill shows, the crashoramas, the school bus races. Those are almost normally now an event of their own.
Kenny Wallace
Yeah.
Bob Sargent
So we don't really have time on the schedule to do it on a race night.
Kenny Wallace
Yeah. You make me wonder. And once again, everybody, we're talking to Bob Sargent. He runs the Nashville fairgrounds. Great promoter running Rockingham. And you just heard him say he's, he's all the way from the north to the south with dirt racing, asphalt racing. You know, sometimes I look at the world of outlaw sprint cars and, and they, they clamor for a, a feeders, a series for downtime. Right. So the world of outlaw sprint cars, they just can't race, you know, for three hours straight. They got to have a little time in between. So they're bringing a support series like the Modifieds or. And then the sprint car guys, they hate the Modifieds because we mess their track up and they, and whine, you know, they're. It's about them. And I understand that and I agree
Bob Sargent
in that part of being a race car driver.
Kenny Wallace
Yeah. You and wine 24 7. It's about me, Bob. All about me.
Bob Sargent
That's right.
Kenny Wallace
Sometimes I wonder if instead of bringing in the Modifieds since we mess everything up, you know, should we bring in something entertainment wise, you know, something quick, you know, does that make any sense?
Bob Sargent
We do that I mean, I probably do it more than. More than. We know you had the racing hat on, right? You put the promoter on, you'll see it more. We do. We'll bring a monster truck in. One truck Raminator. That'll go crush a car to intermission. We do that quite a bit. We do a lot of things at intermission. Again, a lot of that's dictated by the pure time clock and how much time you have in between intermission. Do you need to redo the dirt during intermission? How much time does a fan want to just have a little bit of quiet and talk to his wife or talk to his buddy and have a beer? So, you know, it doesn't have to be non stop roar and, you know, going. There's usually an intermission at most sporting events.
Kenny Wallace
Yeah, I'm going to, you know, go just a little bit more here. I want to thank you for your time. I'm bad at bragging on people. Schrader don't like it when I brag on him. But NASCAR loves you, and I know that they need you. Let's say they don't need you. But in my eye, they. They're planting seeds. That's my opinion. NASCAR's planting seeds. It's like, hey, Bob, help us out over here at Rockingham, you know, now they're bringing, you know, I call it Joliet back. They're having me up there the night before, you know, they're. Here we go again.
Bob Sargent
We're gonna be at Grundy. We're gonna be at Grundy County Thursday night. Just announced.
Kenny Wallace
Okay, there's my subject matter. I. I'm not far off. Thank you. Thank you for helping me right there. So they're having me show up, you know, like that Thursday or Friday night at Joliet downtown. Got a big casino there, if you can. I know I'm poking here. Besides Rockingham, what does NASCAR have you up to?
Bob Sargent
I don't know. They have me up to anything. We have forged a great relationship, a friendship with most of the NASCAR higher ups. Worked with Ron Drager at ARCA for a lot of years.
Kenny Wallace
Again, Schrader loves Draeger.
Bob Sargent
Everybody loves Draeger.
Kenny Wallace
Yeah.
Bob Sargent
So I think in my mind, these relationships are as important as anything, both business wise and personally. I mean, that's. This is a pretty small niche in the real scheme of the world, um, or even the United States, for that matter. So I think the friendships, the trust. I try to go put events on that the upper management doesn't have to worry about, you know, they don't have to worry about. Are the bathrooms going to be clean. They should never have to even worry about that anymore. Those are old. Old days gone by. And we try to make sure that all this stuff, the operations, the promotions, while they're worrying about their next Rockingham or their next LA or the next Chicago, they. I try hard to work with them and. And, you know, find my space in this cog. And that is making sure that the event that we're working on is done safely, respectfully, and drives that brand. Both the. The ARCA brand, the Track Enterprise brand, the NASCAR brand, whatever brand we're working on, the. The Nashville Fairgrounds brand, that. That is being driven in the positive direction.
Kenny Wallace
Let's end like this. We keep going about five more minutes. Bob, I heard something that made me think of what you just said. You said we have a small niche. That means what we do is we race cars in circles, and that's. That's all we do. So it was. It was Jeff Gluck that asked Cletus McFarlane. We know his name is Garrett Mitchell. He's. He's the real deal. Listen, the guy is massively talented. He can drive anything. But Jeff Gluck said, cletus, you know, we talk about followers, and sometimes people make fun of the word followers. I don't, because to me, followers, that's the same thing as, are we sold out. So in other words, how many people are in the grandstands at Nashville Fairgrounds? 12,000. So when you say Cletus has four and a half million followers, that's the same thing as people in the grandstands. He's a money maker. I think people confuse. Oh, followers. It means people in the grandstands get smart. Quit acting dumb. Quit downplaying it. Okay, so Gluck says, cletus, how do I get as many followers as you? And this answer was brilliant. Shaking your head like you might have seen him. He says, jeff, your funnel is very small. All you put in it is nascar. He says, my funnel is, like, super huge. He says, I got the, you know, the drag racers, I got the drifters, I got the rally racers, I got the motorcycle racers. Boy, to that point, you just said, we have a niche, Bob. You got the hardest job in the world. You're trying to get the same people to come back to the same thing. How the hell do we get new fans?
Bob Sargent
Well, I think opening that funnel up so we get them. I think they. They want to be out. So. So just open it up. Piece by piece. You've got our race car fans. Then you've got some motorsports fans, you got some rally fans, you got this. But then you've got football fans and soccer fans and baseball fans and it just keeps going.
Kenny Wallace
Nashville.
Bob Sargent
That, that will come. Watch an event. We are putting on a sporting event. An event. So that's what I try to sell. We're putting on an event. Yes, we were lucky. We got a race. But to those people, it may just be an event that they can come, they can buy a hot dog, they can buy the kid a flag and they can enjoy their sales for two and a half or three hours and go home and tell the neighbors what they just did.
Kenny Wallace
God, you just, you just. I promise everybody, we're going to end how I saw Daytona International Motor Speedway. Invest millions of dollars in WI fi. It. Listen, it's the way it is. It's the way it is. The Pope is on social media. The Pope is on social media. Everybody has to be on social media. Some say I don't have to be on social media. Well, if you're going to go anywhere, you better learn. So with that being said, how important is WI FI at a racetrack?
Bob Sargent
Well, again, it's kind of what I was saying when we first started this. I mean, it's, it's. Times are changing. You know, when we would go to a dirt track at Macon Speedway, it was not very important. But now it is important. Everywhere you go, you need WI fi. You need cell service at the minimum. You know, some of these rural tracks don't even have good cell service. I trust you. No one's going to be happy sitting in a grandstand if they don't have good cell service. It's just that simple.
Kenny Wallace
So they want to share with people what's going on. I, you know, listen, I'm just going to call it the way it is. I love my brother Rusty more than anybody in the world. And I love Kenny Schrader more than anybody in the world. And they just can't stand this. Social media drives them bats crazy. I'm like, guys, you know, Rusty, you got 11 dealerships. They're on him all the time. Rusty, you own 11 dealerships? You know, do you run across these people in the industry? Oh, that damn social media. Are they still out there?
Bob Sargent
Oh, every day. I mean, I question. I'm not that young either. I mean, I question it sometimes. If we need this, where we place our advertising, what we do. And I try to be open minded enough. I mean, I deal with some, I deal with some people that question Cletus, that question streaming, that question things and you know, sometimes this is just out of our control. It's moving so fast and, and it's all so successful, you know that it's a, definitely a part of our lives and, and which is in turn in part of our business and what we do with our racing.
Kenny Wallace
You know, you put on a good show, people will pay 19.95 and you'll get about 70,000. I mean, I know this sounds horrible, Cletus, you know, when Covid came, you know the story about Cletus was, you know, everything was shut down. So Cletus said, well I'll stream it, put it online. 70,000 people. So let's, let's do the math real quick here, okay. You got, let's count Cletus's money. 71.23.00 times $20.00. Is that, is that right? $140,000.
Bob Sargent
How much?
Kenny Wallace
Yeah, is that is okay, you do the math. Okay. If you got people watching Cletus's stuff at 20, $20 times 70,000 people. 70,000 people paying $20 each. Is that 140,000?
Bob Sargent
I don't have my calculator, Kenny, but
Kenny Wallace
I think you got more than that. Respond right here, Everybody. Could be 1.4 million.
Bob Sargent
There you go. And I know that you know that I know that.
Kenny Wallace
There you go everybody again.
Bob Sargent
The sponsors love it, the fans love it. Hey, if they like it, let's, let's give it to them. And Cletus has been brilliant. I enjoyed working with him there at Rockingham and everything he's doing again. This is just an interesting times we live in and you know, it's no different than back when AJ Foyt raced and they here come the roll bar or the full face helmet. I mean things change and we're just fortunate to be living in the times we're living. And you're right, some of it's along for the ride.
Kenny Wallace
All right everybody, we're going to leave on this. About two weeks ago I went to Europe and they asked this 102 year old lady, they said, honey, what's the biggest thing that has changed in your life? She said, everything, everything has changed. Nothing's the same. So we'll leave it at that, won't we Bob?
Bob Sargent
Yes, sir.
Kenny Wallace
Okay everybody listen, it'll keep changing. And that's that moving target we talk about, right?
Bob Sargent
Yeah.
Kenny Wallace

Episode: Bob Sargent: Nashville Fairgrounds Future & The Dale Jr. Factor
Hosts: Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader
Guest: Bob Sargent (President, Track Enterprises)
Date: April 16, 2026
Presented by: SiriusXM, Dirty Mo Media
In this honest, high-energy episode, Kenny Wallace sits down with Bob Sargent, one of American auto racing's most influential promoters and operator of the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. The discussion dives deep into the grassroots health of racing, the impact of celebrity drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr., the challenges and future of historic tracks like Nashville, and the evolution of fan engagement. The two Kennys' familiar irreverent banter is ever-present as they pull back the curtain on the current state of short-track racing, the business of promotion, and why racing’s throwback roots still matter more than ever.
The tone remains candid, passionate, and often humorous—true to the Herm & Schrader style. Wallace is perpetually enthusiastic, direct, and pushes for the “why” behind the sport’s big trends. Sargent provides measured, insightful responses, revealing both the romance and logistics of promoting races in a fast-changing world.
This episode delivers a masterclass in what keeps grassroots racing alive—and why, even as everything changes, the heart of the sport is as strong as ever.
