Herm and Schrader try to thaw us out, but will it be too cold to race at Bowman Gray this weekend?

Herman Schrader
Schrader on the Dirty Mo Media platform from the middle of America in St. Louis, Missouri starts right now.
Kenny Schrader
The following is a production of Dirty Mo Media.
Herman Schrader
I'm looking at Kenny Schrader right now.
Kenny Schrader
Is he a drink during the show? I mean, yeah.
Herman Schrader
How in the world did we agree to do a podcast?
Kenny Schrader
I like spending time with you.
Herman Schrader
That makes me happy.
Kenny Schrader
Well, it's all about making you happy.
Herman Schrader
We're always honest.
Kenny Schrader
We don't know that we're not in trouble and sometimes truthful. What makes you think you're not a little different?
Herman Schrader
Your way are good. Herman Schrader. Are we almost snowed in? I mean, I know we can get down the hill. It's hard to get up the hill here at my place. But tell me your story Kenny.
Kenny Schrader
Out there in Missouri we had about 8 inches but it was so cold it was like powder. You know, it wasn't one of those wet snows where everything. So we got the roads of road. We got driveway in front of the haulers which are backed in the shop. We got two haulers leaving at 11 o', clock, head towards Florida and then I'm waiting for Tom Berry Jr. To show up here this afternoon and him and I and Ann are leaving in the motorhome. We'll meet them guys somewhere down Georgia tonight, test tomorrow and be at Volusia Thursday, Friday, Saturday. So you got to leave full speed ahead. We have got no red warning lights where it says the road's blocked. So we're just going.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, well it would not be right if we ignored the weather. So Dietz, you're from the south, you're down there around the Charlotte, North Carolina area. You all were expecting Armageddon, shut everything down. Give me a report from your area.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Well, you know, the reports from weather people, especially around snow and ice, are so accurate. No, we've got gas, we've got power. If you see kind of reflection in my glasses, there's a lot of white. It's really bright over here. So we got, I don't know, we got two or three inches of snow and then there was a lot of, a lot of sleet and ice. The secondary roads are bad, but, you know, the boys are out of school and they're playing with your friends and it's nice and cozy here. Hopefully it won't look like this on Saturday in Bowman Gray or Sunday, whenever it is.
Herman Schrader
So I am 40 minutes from Kenny Schrader. We got a lot of snow, just like Kenny did. And I fly out to Daytona beach on Wednesday. However, Kenny, I want to go back to you. Did you see the weather forecast for when we landed Daytona? It's like a high of 50 every day. We missed out.
Kenny Schrader
Well, let me tell you what, we don't land in Daytona. You land in Daytona.
Herman Schrader
Yep, I do.
Kenny Schrader
I'm driving a truck today, Tony, hauling a lot of your stuff, if you remember. Thank you, thank you. We're hauling, we're hauling more stuff. We got more friends going. We're just, we're taking a lot of stuff down, which is no problem. But yeah, I watched the dirt races from Volusia last Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and them cats are all running around their short sleeve shirts or, you know, maybe every, every, every now and then there was a hoodie. But it doesn't look like that for when we're going.
Herman Schrader
No, no, it does not look good. Okay, so what did we do over the weekend, everybody? I'll go first, man, I'll tell you what, I didn't do anything. I just watched this crazy snowstorm come in. I, I want to thank Kenny Schrader in front of everybody. I brought, I took out to Kenny my helmet bag so I don't got to take him through the airport. Poor me. And I took him off my merchandise that I'm going to be selling off Nick Hoffman's trailer. Nick Hoffman's wife, Lacy, she said, kenny, bring your merchandise. So I want to thank you, Kenny Schrader.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, I got my.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, yeah.
Kenny Schrader
What did you do for the week? Cloud?
Herman Schrader
Snow?
Kenny Schrader
Yep, we're taking out snow so we could leave out of here this morning. So. No, we're all good. Watch races, though. Watch Volusia every night. Amanda, they have, they have got a handle on that track right now. It is fantastic.
Herman Schrader
They do. Okay, as I said, we're going to start this show now. Let's roll. Okay, everybody, it's going to be NASCAR at the beginning. It's Wednesday. I know what you all are thinking. The haulers are leaving for Bowman Gray. Let me give you a weather update. Kenny, the weather update for Bowman Gray looks like sunny skies. Sunny skies, but we got the haulers. I think when they line up in there, they'll probably be going in tonight. On this Wednesday night, most likely, or early tomorrow morning, which is Thursday. The high in Winston Salem, North Carolina, on Thursday's high of 34, high on Friday. The high on Friday is 34, low at 20. Saturday, when they run those modified races, high of 21, low is 16. And on race day, everybody, this Sunday, race day for the. The cookout Clash high of 30 below a 19. Do. Do you think Kenny Schroeder and Alan, let's go with Schrader first. Do you think it's all speed ahead?
Kenny Schrader
I think it's abort now. R. Here's something. I don't know. All the NASCAR schedules, you know, like, obviously used to, and I know they've changed a lot after things changed at Covid. We're. We got trucks leaving Wednesday for a Sunday race. We don't even. I mean, that's, that's like if they're going to Fontana, you know, I mean, our Sonoma or something, I mean, they leave Tuesday. We're just going to Bowman Gray. Why, why, why is it so many days? I mean, the, the cup cars, when they go to Michigan or something, they're on the track Saturday and Sunday, right? They're not even on track Friday anymore. What are we going up to Bowman Gray on Wednesday for?
Herman Schrader
Dietz? Not, not saying. I'm. I'm going to send this to Deets, Kenny, because he's down there. All right, I'm not saying they're going Wednesday. But here's the problem. Even though it's a little bitty boring at Bowman Gray there, they're still making a big deal out of tech inspection. So they're at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Tech inspection. What do you know, Dietz? You're down there around the action.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Well, you know, the way that I look at it, this race needs to be held in warm weather. In California was. It was warm even though it was across the country, which was kind of dumb. And, you know, this race needs to be in Daytona, period. And you Know, it's just like I texted you guys yesterday, if you want to do something outside of the box, you know, make the All Star race at Bowling Gray and made weather would be awesome. You got guys going for a million dollars on a quarter mile. I think it would be unbelievable. Honestly. Who thinks the All Star race at Dover is going to be very good? This not. It's going to suck. And I'd be willing to bet my mortgage on it. But you know, we've been at Bristol and Richmond and other places where, where it was cold and where we raced in the 30s. But you know, it's going to be hard getting heat in those tires when it's 20 degrees outside. Maybe an idea if they're set on running it at, at Bowman Gray. Why not? Because you're beholden the tv. Why not run it the following week even though that Super Bowl Sunday, but run it in the afternoon leading up to the Super Bowl? Now, I know that the super bowl is not on Fox, it's on NBC, but that might not be a bad idea. That started at 2 or 3 on Fox and then everybody can tune in the NBC and watch the Super Bowl. That, you know, they got very lucky last year with the weather at Bowman Drake. And this is exactly what I thought would happen. You're on the edge of the mountains in North Carolina. The whole idea running this race at Bowman Gray in February was bad to start with. And I'm just, I'm being honest. I mean, it's, it's a bad idea. And I wouldn't be shocked if they postpone it or do something.
Herman Schrader
Okay. Kenny Schrader 2 hours ago. Bob Pocras, the reporter from Fox, he's, he's the main reporter. Here is the schedule on Saturday. Now remember Saturday we got temperatures in the teens. Okay. Saturday morning at 10:15. Modified practice. Oh, now, I didn't know this. 10:45 sportsman practice. Looks like we've added another division in. I didn't know this. 11:15 on Saturday. Mods qualify. 11:14. Now this is. I'm reading this. 11:14. I don't know if that was a typo. Sportsman qualifying. Okay, I just want to get down to the bottom here, guys. There's a lot more. The heat races for the Cup Series for the cookout clash at Bowman Gray on Saturday night. The heat races. Listen to this. Start at 8:30 at night. Oh, boy.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
It'll be 12 degrees.
Herman Schrader
What do you think, Kenny? You sticking with.
Kenny Schrader
I'm a. Okay. I'm a NASCAR supporter. Don't always agree with Everything that comes out of there. But I'm a supporter. I was thinking today about we go down Daytona now for Speed Week. Well, Speed Week isn't nothing about Speed Week anymore. It's what, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The ARCA race and the truck race run together, I think on Saturday. I don't know, the Xfinity rate, whatever. Everything's like, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. It's not Speed Week anymore. The qualifiers are still on Thursday, right? Yeah, I agree. They don't get on track till Wednesday. You know, I, I just don't know. They're doing stuff.
Herman Schrader
Bring up a good point.
Kenny Schrader
They're doing well. I mean, it's, it's, it's a weekend, it's a weekend at Daytona. So I don't know. We'll just have to see. It's just tough to make the right decisions and you don't know what the right decisions are until you try something. So I don't know. The dirt world is changing this year because they used to run a lot of races before Speed Week, you know, the traditional Speed Week, and now they're running a lot after speed Week. Is that going to help their crowds or hurt their crowds? I don't know. But I do know that NASCAR and Daytona control everything down there. As far as if there's big crowds at Daytona, there's big crowds everywhere. You know, it is tough. They're, they're scrambling to, to try to do right. And the only way you can find out if you did right is do it.

Herman Schrader
Well, everybody, this is Herman Schrader and we do, we do what you all do. We talk about it. What do you think's gonna happen at Bowman Gray this week? And we're, we're just having a lot of fun, everybody. So we'll keep it light and yeah, it's going to be tough, but we'll see what they do. We've all given our opinion. I, I kind of agree with Kenny. Let's make it towards pleasurable for everybody. But once again, we know what Fox Sports, you know, what are they going to say? Can they put this in a different time slot? We don't know.
Kenny Schrader
It's going to be pleasurable for me. I'm either going to be in the motorhome watching it or I'm going to be out at the campfire watching it. But it'll be pleasurable. Yeah.
Herman Schrader
Okay. For a lot of you young kids, I don't know if you remember what this is.
Kenny Schrader
Deets.
Herman Schrader
I'm gonna, we're having fun right now. This is breaking news. Walter Cronkite, do you do. Are you old enough to remember that? Deets?
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Very well. But by the time he retired, I was, I think two years old. So I don't personally remember him doing the news.
Herman Schrader
Kenny Schroeder, breaking news in the garage area. As we tape this show. Jordan Bianchi and all the media right now, they're sharing this. Jordan Bianchi says that the playoff race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, it appears that they are going to get rid of the road course, that they're going back on the oval. I'm going to go first. I think this is a great decision. I think in, in an era where we had to create something different. The fans are yearning, you know, what's old is new again. I, if this is true and Jordan Bianchi is a well known reporter, everybody looks up to him. If this is true. Kenny Schrader, what do you think of that?
Kenny Schrader
I think it's, I think it's great. Always been a big fan of, you know, Charlotte Speedway for sure. But yeah, I did not mind watching that, that Roval race there. It was pretty exciting because what I liked about the oval, the Roval and the Indianapolis road course is they were so wide. It wasn't like going to Watkins Glen or Sonoma where you're fighting over one little area. They were so wide that they, they put on some pretty good races. But you know, we, we have enough road courses. Our, our background, our history is oval racing. And I think it, I like it.
Herman Schrader
Okay, so we will pay attention to that, everybody. That is breaking news. The playoff race at Charlotte at the End of the year appears, as reported by Jordan Bianchi, that it will go back on the oval, that they are aborting the road course. However, that is reported by Jordan Bianchi. All right, okay, switching gears, everybody. Kenny Schrader. NASCAR has started the year off winning the, the Rolex 24. IMSA. IMSA. That is owned by NASCAR. And they had a record crowd. They showed the pictures. Scott McLaughlin, the race car driver. Of course we'll get into who won it, but just let's stay with that thought process right now. I know the weather was great, but why do you think the Daytona 24. I did see the pictures. Why, why do you think everybody was talking about how good it looked this year as compared to the years past?
Kenny Schrader
I didn't, I didn't see the pictures, but I know that in, okay, this, in my mind, you know, we know how my mind gets. But that, that race for the last 10 years has been becoming more popular and more popular. I've only been to it once, but I see some of the things. They're making a carnival atmosphere out of it kind of. And yeah, I mean, plus, I mean, it's like, hey, I can go there anytime I want. You want to cruise over there Saturday night for a couple hours? You want to go Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon or, you know, it's just, I think they've, that race has gained a lot of popularity and it, it used to be a. Just finish the damn thing, you know, be eight, nine laps, 10 laps ahead. I don't know dates, what, what a big margin of victory was 20 years ago. But now them guys race their asses off, you know, and it's, it's, it's a good show to watch.
Herman Schrader
Okay, Dietz, I, I got this ready right here, okay? For everybody. There was, there was four classes in the 24 hours of Daytona. And I'm gonna tell you what the classes were I'm going to give you now after 24 hours of racing, after a full day and night, okay? GTP class, the main class, that's what we all call Daytona prototype. The bad boys, Roger Penske, they won the race by. Listen to this. 1.714. That means the guy that ran second was one second behind him after 24 hours of racing. That's insane. Okay. LMP2. This was the biggest margin of victory. The second place car was eight seconds behind. Okay, we forget about that. We forget about that. The next class, G TD Pro. This was a good one. Harper one. And he was second, 2.6 seconds behind now, the last class GTD Ellis won and this one was the closest, 1.023. So it's fair to say every class, the second place car, they were all close to each other. 24 hours of racing.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, it didn't used to be like that. I mean you just, you just need to finish. You know, if you, if you were one of the top cars and you could finish without that catastrophe where you were in the pits for a couple hours, you know, you, you had a good shot of winning by a healthy margin. Those days are over. They're over at every division of our sport, from the smallest dirt tracks to the biggest pavement tracks to the road courses. Every, I mean Indianapolis used to be one car in a lead lap or lead by win by half a lap or something. And now, you know, they're all on top of one another. So spec cars, somewhat spec or tighter rule books have brought everybody closer together.
Herman Schrader
Dietz, I'm going to throw this to you. Is the NASCAR stock car division like the cup cars, Xfinity trucks, do you think they can learn something? I like what Kenny Schrader had to say there. You look at all these Formula One races inside the racetrack for the 24 hour Rolex race. You have the Ferris wheel going around. You know, you got this, this atmosphere, man, there's something going on there. You know, I mean, I know we have the souvenir trailers at the NASCAR races. Do we need more things to do on the two days leading up to these NASCAR cup races?
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Well, the answer Kenny's question, the largest margin of victory was in 1988 Jaguar XJR9.1 by 10 laps or 1 minute 27 seconds, basically ahead of the runner up. And that's, that's the way you know, that it typically was. And you know, you look back, Ned Jarrett won the Southern 500 in 1965 by like 12 or 14 laps or something like that. So, you know, it's like Kenny said, those days are over. Here's the way that I look at it. You know, I, I think NASCAR in recent years has tried, you know, with Ferris wheels and, and the outside atmosphere and stuff like that. Formula one races are basically over after qualifying in the first layup. True, but, but you see the popularity of it now, I think for nascar and you know, you and John Roberts are doing it when NASCAR was at its peak in the early 2000s, all the stuff going on outside the event, in the midway and stuff like that, before the races started, work big and attracted people with trackside and all this stuff to do. And I think, you know, more stuff like that is good with a NASCAR race. I don't think all the stuff going on during the event is, is necessary because the races are short enough in, compact enough and close enough that I don't think you need to do all that stuff. But I think leading up to it, that's, that's where I think things like track side and all the stuff outside the event are good.
Herman Schrader
Okay. Moving forward, talking about the race itself, Kenny Schrader. Here we go again. The captain, Roger Penske. Now this is going to be his year because this is Roger Penske's 60th year. So they're making a big deal out of this. You know, Roger and Rick Hendrick, they make a big deal out of their success. They, they celebrate it. In Roger Penske's 60th year. This was his third 24 hour win in a row. Just talk about the captain. I mean we celebrate him every year. But what do you think?
Kenny Schrader
I mean this, it doesn't come as a surprise, you know, it doesn't. I think. Didn't Ganassi do it one other time? I think Ganassi won it three years in a row, I believe.
Herman Schrader
Oh yeah, yeah.
Kenny Schrader
But you know, if Roger, now this is just me, you know, we all have an opinion, just like we all have lots of things. But if Roger decided he wanted to win the World of Outlaw Sprint Car Championship next year, I would not bet against him, you know, because he just, he, he comes up with the resources to do it and he knows how to run a very successful business and how to put the people together. So Rick and Roger and Mr. Ganassi have. I'm going to go with those three just because they've been so. And Roger more than Rick. But Roger's and Chip have been more diversified as far as running so many different type of divisions. Rick, Rick's run a lot of other stuff but not full time efforts like Roger has and Chip have. So I mean it's not, oh, it's not a surprise that Roger wins his.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Third in a row.
Kenny Schrader
And I mean I'm a, I'm a big fan of all three of them just because how big or how serious they are about racing, how much of erasure they are personally to commit the finances and the effort and the time it takes to, to put together all the successful programs that they do.
Herman Schrader
So I'm going to say this, but Deets, I need you to help me. Kenny, you probably already know. Just understanding why is Roger Penske so successful in Everything he does. But let's go way back. Didn't Roger Penske win a Cup race at Riverside, or did he drive in a Cup race at Riverside?
Kenny Schrader
He won.
Herman Schrader
Okay, that. That is. That is even better yet. So. Not.
Kenny Schrader
I'm saying he did, but in the deets, I'm sure he did because they.
Herman Schrader
Gave him some time there.
Kenny Schrader
They. They redid. They redid that car. Your brother was over there. They.
Herman Schrader
They gave you the black Pontiac.
Kenny Schrader
Black Pontiac.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Yeah, I. I know. I know the car that you're talking about. I think it was an O2. But as a driver, he never had cut. Win. He. No. He won the LA Times Grand Prix at Riverside in the 24 Hours of Daytona class win, but never had Cook win as a driver. Those were wins that he actually had as a driver.
Herman Schrader
Listen to this, guys. Yes. Roger Penske was a highly successful race car driver before becoming a legendary team owner. Considered one of America's top young road racers in the late 50s and early 60s. He won the 1961. To your. To your point. DS Roger Penske won the 1961 SCCA Driver of the Year Award, competed in two Formula One Grand Prix, and won a 1963 NASCAR race. He retired from driving at 65 at age 28 to focus on his business, subsequently forming Team Penske. Okay, so he won a 1963 cup race.
Kenny Schrader
They say Cup.
Herman Schrader
I'm still going.
Kenny Schrader
I can see the smoke.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Well, what I'm seeing is he. He had two career cup starts, and his best Finish was a 12th at Old Bridge Stadium in 1963. But now Kenny may be talking about. I know they had some standalone NASCAR west races even back then, and he might have got a. Been credited with a win.
Kenny Schrader
Whatever. Roger, he was a hell of a driver. I didn't know he ran to Formula One races.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, neither did I. I'm just looking this up. Did Roger Penske ever win in NASCAR Cup Series? Yeah.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Here we go.
Herman Schrader
Let's look. It's coming up right now.
Kenny Schrader
You're looking on the Internet, right?
Herman Schrader
Oh, yeah. You know what it is? They're just get. Okay, I'll abort this. Because they're. Yes, he won in cup and all that. Okay, well, we'll deal with that later. And as we always say, everybody respond right here.
Kenny Schrader
What did it say? What did it say?
Herman Schrader
Okay, it is. I said, did Roger ever win in Cup? And it's. I didn't ask it. Right. It said, yes. Roger Penske is a highly successful team owner in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Kenny Schrader
5.
Herman Schrader
I should have said driver.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
Herman Schrader
Okay, You. You put that into Google there, Dietz. Did Roger Kinski, as a NASCAR cup driver, ever win in the cup series?
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
No. Okay, okay, okay.
Herman Schrader
So there it is, everybody. Roger penske.
Kenny Schrader
He won 24 hour race again.
Herman Schrader
Yeah.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
And he. He was a. He won le Mans in 1963 to 24 there. And I think that was. We know he started first, finished 25th.
Herman Schrader
Let's dumb it down, Kenny.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
We're doing a real good job of dumbing it down right now.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
Herman Schrader
Hey, everybody's. Everybody's following along. I see everybody on their phones right now trying to help us. So, Kenny, you run a business. You work with Federated Auto Parts. What does. What do you have to have in your mind and your skill set to. Whatever you do you win at?
Kenny Schrader
Is.
Herman Schrader
Is it hiring the right people? And then when you hire the person having them be great bosses, what is it that Roger Pinsky has that some others don't have? Why does he stand out?
Kenny Schrader
Well, I think. I think him and Rick both are just. They've been very good at knowing who. Who to hire, having the ability to see that those people are capable. And the people he's hiring, you know, they got to be capable of managing the people and treating it like it's theirs and really having the. The attitude where they, you know, you really care. I mean, it's just any business is a people person, and they're really good at picking people.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, I agree with that. I think that is the. The reason and just have a little fun here. Kenny, didn't your boss, Rick Hender, didn't they. Don't they make a big deal out of each employee, Making each employee feel important by. I hear that each employee, when it's their birthday, they spin a wheel and they win something. You know anything about that?
Kenny Schrader
Rick just always gave me a hard time. I was watching some stuff that popped up. Rick and Rick and I jacking with each other, which. There was something that showed up the other day where Richard Broom was off for four or five weeks with the back surgery, and Rick was my crew chief.
Herman Schrader
Oh, boy.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, I remember it. And I kept blaming him, you know, whatever. Did we actually run second in Winston? He is my crew chief. I said, we just. Crew chief made some rough, bad decisions, and we got to poll a couple days later for the. For the 600. And I said, well, the crew chief did a hell of a job. So I don't. Rick is fabulous to work for. My son works for him.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, it is. Hold on. Your son?
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. I didn't know this, he told me there was a job listed over at Hendrick Automotive, not motorsports. Hendrick Automotive.
Herman Schrader
Got it.
Kenny Schrader
That he had applied for. And I said, why did you call me? Let's stack the deck a little bit. And he said, no, I can. Yeah, let's do it. But anyway, he's over there.
Herman Schrader
That's exciting. Shelton Sheldon is working for.
Kenny Schrader
He's been over there three or four months.
Herman Schrader
Well, he's the man for the job. You're, you're, you're. Sheldon is, is smart and that's great.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, he doesn't like racing. Hold on though. He knew he didn't want to do anything. Had to do with going around circles.
Herman Schrader
My, my favorite thing about Kenny Schrader is late at night, you know, the races are over and people come up to Kenny Schrader deets and, and they go, kenny, my son's eight years old. What has he got to do to keep racing? Schrader usually says, quit right now.
Kenny Schrader
Buy golf clubs.

We're winding down the Daytona 24. Everybody was celebrating Roger Pinsky and people like him.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Herman Schrader
Yep, yep, go ahead.
Kenny Schrader
They set a record this year.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, that's what I was getting to. But go. Okay, go ahead.
Kenny Schrader
All right. Well, the Day 20 Daytona 24 hour race was like 17 hours and something.
Herman Schrader
Minus six, minus six and a half hours.
Kenny Schrader
Six and a half hour yellow flag. I mean it's like, man, can you imagine just riding around there first for that long?
Herman Schrader
And some of these guys counted their stints as, you know, doing that. So, you know, like, let's say Connor Zilich, he Was in the car for over four hours. That's counted as a stint. And that's, that's kind of the rules. They got there six and a half hours. They, you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Everybody fog. You ever done that, Kenny?
Kenny Schrader
We go to, to run 24 hour race in 19. Oh, something must have been, oh no, 1986. Bill Elliott, Ricky Rudd, Kyle Petty and myself. So we're in a team meeting. We're running a Roush Mustang. We're in the team meeting and okay, you're going to drive an hour, you're going to drive an hour, you're going to drive an hour. Then we go hour and a half hour. And, and Bill's like, can't I just drive six and go home? And he said, no, Bill, you can't drive six and go home. He said, you can't drive six. We do every week, you know, but I mean we don't drive six, but we had a lot of over fours. You know, they said, let's just all drive six and go home and. Sound like good deal to me. And then at that time, a little off subject here, but at that time you pitted for brakes and tires at this lap. This is when you're going to pit and boy, you can't argue with Jack because Jack was, I mean he was so successful there. But it's like lap 30, we're going to put on tires and brakes. Yes. Well, what if the yellow comes out at lap 28? Well, then you're going to ride around two more laps under the yellow and come in and put on brakes. Why wouldn't we come in on lap 28 and put on the brakes? You know, make that there change under the yellow because that's not on his scheduled. Y' all are going to have to explain this to me. I don't understand it. But you couldn't argue with them because they, they won a lot of those races. But it was a little different.
Herman Schrader
Scheduling, schedule. Okay, everybody scheduling. Yeah, it sounds like my wife. We have a schedule here and you come home from the races and always ruin it. I'd walk in the door and you know, she'd, she'd have the kids under control. Our three daughters and I'd do something wrong. You're messing up our scheduling. We have things scheduled. Okay.
Kenny Schrader
Wow.
Herman Schrader
We have a lot more to go to. I didn't realize we've got to talk about the NASCAR hall of Fame. We need to say something because these gentlemen. Dude, did do good. I'm just Gonna say the three names and I think we'll all take a driver. Well, no, we, I think we should all talk about. All right, Ray Hendrick. Now that is the legendary orange number 11 with flames. Ray Hendrick in the modifieds. Harry Gantt, Handsome Harry Gantt, Kurt Bush, Kenny. They were inducted into the NASCAR hall of Fame. The ceremony looked good. Well, let's go with deets. Let's give Schrader a rest. He'd been talking. What do you, what do you think, Dietz?
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Well, you'll notice I've got my skull bandit hat on. Of course, Kenny was the cold Bandit and Harry Gantt was almost the original school bandit that Stan Barrett was before him. That's a whole nother story. But anyway, you know, I'll tell you a little Ray Hendricks story. My granddaddy went to the races that up at Fayetteville, North Carolina and he told me that every time Ray Hendrick didn't run there every week, but every time Ray Hendrick came down there and modified or a stock or late model at that time, he said he never saw Ray Hendrick lose a race. So, you know, when, when you think about modified drivers, you know, Richie Evans is probably the most famous name. I would say that Ray Hendrick was the equivalent of.
Herman Schrader
Add on to that. I love this Google. Ray Hendrick was a prolific racer and winner. Ray Hendrick was a driver who would compete anywhere and everywhere. Sounds like you, Schrader, but listen to this. This is what we're, this is what we're getting to. In a career that spanned nearly 40 years. Okay, this is insane. Ray Hendrick won 44.4% of his starts and finished in the top five and four of every five races he entered. To your point, that's insane.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
You know, and one other thing that I would add is, and Rusty may have done this, but people don't realize that they ran modifieds at Daytona and they ran them on the road course. But for about three or four years, like from 1977-80 or somewhere along in there, they ran them on the, on the two and a half mile track. So you had these just wild looking Camaros out there that in Firebirds that Richie Evans and Bobby Allison, Ray Hendricks and Daryl Waltrip and all these guys would run. People need to go back and look because there's some of the neatest, funkiest looking race cars you'll see.
Herman Schrader
Ray Hendrick all time WINS Leader Martinsville 20 wins one of the 50 great race car drivers ranked number four in the all time top 10 modified drivers list. We lost Ray at 61 years old due to cancer. So just a quick look at the great Ray Hendrick. And boy, when you go back through the stats, it does remind you. Kenny, I like it that you always give the people the past. You really give them a lot of time. And I've learned that from you. Kenny, why don't. What about, what about Harry Ganner or Kurt Busch? Kenny.
Kenny Schrader
Harry was one of the guys. When you came in, you could instantly go and ask him something, you know, I mean, it was a lot of them like that. But Harry tell you the truth. Harry also tell you when you were messing up? Yeah, nicely tell you, but make it to your point. It's like, hey kid, this is stupid. You're not doing this. You know, he was bigger as, like when I'm running twelves and I come up to pass you and you're running 11th and it's 300 laps into this 500, 300 miles into this 500 mile race, you don't jack with me. You don't race me. You let me go because we're racing the leader and the more you jack with me, the more time we lose to the leader. So you let me go, we'll race when it's time to race. Harry, just the way he handled himself, you might not, you know, your guy might have been Darryl Waltrip or might have been your, your brother or it might have been Dale Senior or Terry Labonte or whoever that was your guy. But there was nobody that was really not far Harry. You know, nobody would say, oh, I don't want Harry to win. They all, everybody liked Harry and he, just the way he handled himself. He was, he was great. He wasn't, I mean, he didn't start cup race until he was, I don't know, Nate's. How old were he when he went full time cup racing? He was in his 40s. I know.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Yeah, I mean he was, he was 38 or 40 and pushing it. And you know, the thing, when you look at his numbers, like his cut wins, he's got, I think somewhere around 18 or 20, something like that. But when you take his career as a whole as a late model racer and really. And honestly, I think the two things that got him in the whole thing were all those races he won in 1991, I think it was. He won seven races in a row between cup and the Blues series. And the other thing was, was, you know, teamed up with Burt Reynolds and those guys. That school bandit was iconic and, and, and took NASCAR to To a. When it was growing in the 80s, that was just another thing that helped make it a little bit more mainstream.
Kenny Schrader
They had a national and promotion program that really, really worked.
Herman Schrader
Nicknamed Handsome Harry. Because Harry's hair, his full head of hair was never out of place and he was a good looking man. The ladies loved him. So his, his nickname was Handsome Harry. Just some really cool stuff here, obviously. Inducted to the NASCAR hall of Fame 2026. He holds the record as the oldest cup winner at age 52 and poll winner in the cup series at 54, winning 18 cup races and went on a terror winning four consecutive cup races. Nickname also Mr. September. So Harry's got a couple nicknames. Mr. September and Handsome Harry. Oh, here's another one I did. Here's another one. Guys. Did you hear about this one? High Groove Harry. Because he always liked to run high. Yeah, the Bandit. He was in four nicknames.
Kenny Schrader
He was the Bandit to start with the Bandit and then Handsome Harry. He didn't come Mr. September till he was 51, but he was just incredible. I mean he's a, he's one of the guys. Man, he was great.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. Hopefully we told everybody. I always learned something. Every time I do Herman Schrader, I enjoy looking these great drivers up. Okay, I'm going to tell you all about Kurt Busch. Kurt to me is the epitome of God given talent. Brother Mike tells me a story. He's out in Vegas somewhere. And Kurt was just so far ahead of everybody's talent that he stood out. You know, he was just that good. But he was a hothead and you know, he, he got what he got. Yeah, but his talent, his talent, you know, rose above that. The drivers, you know, the car owners would keep hiring him. You know, Roger Penske let him go. Rick Hendrick letting go. So here's his nickname. He's in the 2026NATS hall of Fame. Renowned as the. And the reason I was telling you all that he is renowned as his nickname is the outlaw. He secured 34 Cup Series wins, including the n the 2017 Daytona 501. A few drivers like you, Kenny Schrader. Kenny Schrader and Kurt Busch share this. One of the few drivers to win in all three series trucks.
Kenny Schrader
There's like 30 of them.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, now, now.
Kenny Schrader
Small group of 30.
Herman Schrader
I don't think that's true. There's a bunch you did is very rare. But his talent is unbelievable. This kid can drive on the edge. The engineers say that both the Bush brothers. It must be in the jeans When. When the engineers look at Kurt Busch's, they say his data, he drives on the edge of wrecking, you know. And when Kirk got in trouble and I drove his car, it was too loose for me. And they. And Jimmy Finney took a rubber out of the right rear, put it in the left rear, and I was able to get going. But I mean, his. His talent is unbelievable. That has him in the NASCAR hall of fame, but he is an outlaw. He was very passionate and like a Wallace cussed up a storm on the radio. But, boy, we will not forget him. He is one of the greats of all time. And then anytime I've been around Kurt, the nicest guy, Mark Martin said it perfect. I'll steal one from Mark Martin said, Kenny, I said, yes, Mark. He said, the best teammate I ever had. The best team I'd ever had.
Kenny Schrader
So.
Herman Schrader
All right, everybody, that's it. You got anything? Deets? I see you pushing buttons there and things like that. You got anything?
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Yeah, I looked it up. It's 39 drivers if one and all three, which. Now listen, when you. Very prestigious drivers. No, but listen, when you think about all the drivers that have raced in all three series since the Truck series started in 1995, you're talking about hundreds, maybe thousands of drivers. So to just have 39 is. Is pretty amazing. And the other thing about Kurt Busch, remember that might have been the last driver Dale Earnhardt ever slipped off. He'd flip him off.
Herman Schrader
Wow, that's awesome.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Documented in the race.
Kenny Schrader
I like when he bent over at turn three at Indianapolis telling Spencer he can kiss his butt. And it's like, I remember that for sure.

Herman Schrader
Well, listen, I had to go where I went to, everybody I had to get to. Why his name, his nickname is the Outlaw. He is the Outlaw because he is obviously one of the greatest drivers of our generation. But did get. Did lose some of the greatest rides of all time.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
But, you know, kidding. But most guys, you know, one of the most impressive things that I think he did. When you look at what he did in James Finch's.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, yeah.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
When you look at what he did in that furniture row 78 to get that team to be a championship caliber team, I think that's as impressive as anything that he did. And the fact that he was able to come back from some of those controversies and actually become a mainstream driver again with big time rides.
Herman Schrader
And I like that because he did, he did overcome a lot.
Kenny Schrader
That.
Herman Schrader
That is a great point, Dietz. I like that because, you know, his actions is kind of like God, but look how great he is, you know? Yeah. Okay, well, congratulations to all three. They're definitely worthy of being in the hall of fame. Okay, Kenny, are you ready to go dirt racing?
Kenny Schrader
Ready to go.
Herman Schrader
Okay, I know you're gonna help me, but I'm just gonna go and stay at Volusia. You want to take it from there? And I mean, we got our notes, but what do you. They went to Volusia. It was the Sunshine Nationals. It was the world of outlaw late models.
Kenny Schrader
Three days, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Now you're going to have to help me. I watched all three.
Herman Schrader
That's okay.
Kenny Schrader
That you're gonna have to help me. I know that when they paid the 20 grand Saturday night, Tim McCready was our guy.
Herman Schrader
Let me just say this. Madden won the first night.
Kenny Schrader
Yes.
Herman Schrader
Hudson O' Neill on the second night. And then yes, McCready. And that is the talk right now. And as you know, Freddie Carpenter say something that kind of tugged at my heartstrings. Me and you don't like to hear it, but Freddie Carpenter said that McCready winning at 51 years young is good for the sport. Just like they say. We all say about you, Kenny. And I won't embarrass you, but to see Tim McCready at 51 years old, I mean, hammer that thing for 50 straight laps. Popular win, Kenny.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, yeah, well, and I think Tim's very popular. Anyway. He does. He knows all about his cars. He's been around them forever. He's worked on him forever. Man, you talk about coming from a racing family. Oh, my gosh. Is Daddy Bob, no telling how many of the dirt car races in the center steer cars that he's wondering. Yeah, he's, he's been, he's. He's been on a road for a number of years when this, you know, guys start getting tired and he's still out there hammering, you know, what a fantastic start now. Tell you what's going to get exciting is we were out of Phoenix and Casa Grande and watched Hudson and little Pierce. And watched Hudson a little Pierce again that Volusia and beating our one another. Not so much beating our one. Yes. Yeah, just, you know, getting real aggressive, bouncing off one another a little bit. And that's way too early in the year to be beaten on each other the same guy that much I think.
Herman Schrader
Team Longhorn chassis with Kevin Rumley and Bob Pierce need to have a phone call with. With son Bobby because you know, they are a Longhorn dealer. Longhorn is a chassis make and Bobby Pierce and. And I like that you brought that up, Kenny, because I followed Jacqueline, which is Kevin Rumley. Kevin Rumley owns and runs the six which Hudson o' Neill drives. Jacqueline says run over again by Bobby. So you're right. That needs to be put out.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, it'll get put out. It'll get fixed. Might be more stuff that's fixed, but it'll get fixed.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, I don't know if I keep going up against Hudson o' Neill because basically, you know, they're going to build those cars there at Longhorn. I'm sure I don't know what Bobby pays for, but they're both great. But boys, boys, you know, we don't have a profit margin in this dirt racing. I agree. Okay.
Kenny Schrader
So.
Herman Schrader
Matt, Chris Madden wins the first night. He does some slide jobs with my guy Nick Hoffman. I'll be driving Nick Hoffman's modified at Volusia this week. But Chris Madden and Nick Hoffman went at it and Madden come out on top. Hudson o' Neill about lost it on the last lap on Saturday or Friday night. Kenny Hudson o' Neill popped the nose and Turbo was underneath of him. Side by side down the back straightaway, coming to the checkered. So on Friday night, Hudson o' Neal and Turbo Turbo helmets, Lane, Schrader, Robinson.
Kenny Schrader
Hudson on the outside.
Herman Schrader
Yes, yes.
Kenny Schrader
Very brave. Very brave. Yeah.
Herman Schrader
Yeah. And then McCready had the car to beat. You could kind of see that on Friday night. McCready just flat one. They did tend to close in on him. B, Chef Brandon Shepard did. Did close in on him on Saturday night.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
But you know, back that him, McCready deal. You know, winning when you get to be over 50, I mean dirt, late model, you're slinging those things and doing everything. But it, it puts you in a different class. I mean we know what, what traders do now, but when you think about guys like Freddie Smith and, and Larry Moore and even Balloon Quiz Buck Simmons, guys like that, they were winning races up in their, their 50s and 60s and, and that's not something just anybody can do. So I, I, it puts him in a, in a different class at this point in his career, I think.
Kenny Schrader
But we're not pushing these cars around or we're not carrying them. You're sitting on your ass using your shoulders. I mean, you know, your, your arms and your, your legs and holding your neck up. It's not like if you do it all the time, it's not like it's a deal where we're running a marathon where the 20 year old is going to have a distinct advantage over the 50 year old. So I mean that experience factors in.
Herman Schrader
Kenny staying on that. Do you think that's why our heroes. Steve Kinser was able to go to 60 because he just, a lot of it was just in his DNA because when you do it so long, you can keep going.
Kenny Schrader
Well, and he's a bull, you know, he was a bull. He's like Buddy Baker. He has no neck upside down. He was an upside down triangle with a head on the top. You know, he was just, I mean, yeah, I mean Buddy Baker is like, you know, one guy I'm gonna make mad is Buddy Baker. You know, so. Yeah, I mean that, that definitely helps. Yeah.
Herman Schrader
Kids are 60 years old and Kenny, is, is your friend Steve Kinser going to be, is he going to be parking his motor coach with you at Volusia this year?
Kenny Schrader
I don't know. We've been beating on him. He, he says he thinks so, but I don't, I don't feel it when I talk to him. I don't think he's his son. Craig's coming home and got a new grandbaby and they're getting home like this coming weekend and I think that's going to mess him up.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, that, that, that changes the, that definitely changes it. Okay, everybody, it's time for jokes. Hey, I got one and I gotta tell it. It is so damn funny. Okay, Dietz, here I go. I'm kind of like Kenny Schrader. I got a joke.
Kenny Schrader
Okay.
Herman Schrader
Five ants rented an apartment with another five ants. Now there's ten ants tenants. Five hands. Five hands rented an apartment with another five ants dot now there's. Now, now there are tenants.
Kenny Schrader
Okay, bye.
Herman Schrader
That's what it says. Okay, bye.
Kenny Schrader
Okay, bye.
Herman Schrader
Bye. In other words, I'm out. And there's stretch for that one. But I thought it was funny.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Well, now, now I can't. I can't read it and, and talk to you guys at the same time. So I'll just give you one. And now I'm gonna have to try to do it from memory.
Herman Schrader
You don't have to.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
Here it is. Why is it bad to iron a four leaf clover? You never want to pressure luck.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, that's good. I like that. Yep, makes sense. I don't have anything.
Herman Schrader
That's okay. That's okay. We've done our job here. I think we did. We had fun. All right.
Kenny Schrader
If this show wasn't a joke enough, that's all we got.
Herman Schrader
Hey, Kenny. What's funny is when you hear this come out, you'll be shocked. It's incredible what they can do with electronics. They'll clean us all up.
Kenny Schrader
Okay.
Dietz (Co-host/Guest)
We hope so. They will.
Herman Schrader
All right, Kenny, I know you're headed to Florida. You any. It's a big Federated auto parts sponsored event. Anything about that?
Kenny Schrader
The dirt car nationals. I don't know how many years this is that for Volusia speedway to be doing this. And the dirt world racing group has just grown it and grown it. Here we were last weekend with the sun sign sunshine nationals. Three days of the world outlaws. We come back there late miles. We come back there this weekend. Wing sprint cars. Not world outlaws but wing sprint cars. And the ump modifieds. The following week it's sprint car wing sprint cars a couple days or three or four days or world outlaw sprint cars along with the ump modifieds. The following week is usex. Their dirt late models are there. Center steer modifieds are there. I mean got four weekends of racing down there. It was, I should say weekends. First two are just weekends, the second two are everydays except Sunday. And it's just a lot of fun.
Herman Schrader
Yeah, I don't. I don't think I could have said it any better. Kenny Schrader, I will be joining you down there. I'll be driving Nick Hoffman's dirt modified. And as I look at my calendar, Kenny Schrader and myself, we start racing this Thursday, tomorrow, January 29th 30th and on Saturday we run for 10,000 to win. And then we're off on Sunday. And we fired back up on that Monday. What is that, Kenny? February 2nd.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, but we don't run to no. 10,000 to win.
Herman Schrader
Oh, what. What is. How much money is it this Saturday to win?
Kenny Schrader
Not near that much. Well, it's. We don't run for. No.
Herman Schrader
But anyway, I will be driving Nick Coffins modified. Looking forward to it. Come up to his souvenir trailer. Rhonda Hoffman, his mom, Lacy. They'll be selling Nick Hoffman's merchandise. My merchandise. Have you found out what it pays to win?
Kenny Schrader
Yes, it is 10,000 if you win it the next four years in a row.
Herman Schrader
Come on. This Saturday pays. How much? 2000.
Kenny Schrader
No, I'm gonna let you do the math. It's 2500.
Herman Schrader
2500 is all it pays to win this Saturday.
Kenny Schrader
Well, we got a guy that's money for 7700 hours. A wind a week shouldn't, you know, used to run for 700, so you shouldn't, like, really complain about the 2500.
Herman Schrader
I'm happy because I drive 15 minutes down the road here to Federated Auto Parts raceway park for 700 to win. So, yes, I'm happy to drive 18 hours for 2500 to win. All right, everybody, remember, say this at the end of every show. If you want to listen to Herman Schrader and see Kenny Schrader's pretty face, go to the Kenny Wallace YouTube show.
