The following is a production of Dirty Mo Media. I'm looking at Kenny Schrader right now.
Kenny Schrader
He's a drinker in the show. I mean, yeah, he.
Narrator
How in the world did we agree to do a podcast?
Kenny Schrader
I like spending time with you.
Narrator
That makes me happy.
Kenny Schrader
Well, it's all about making you happy.
Narrator
We're always honest.
Kenny Schrader
We don't know that we're not in trouble already. And sometimes truthful. What makes you think you're not a little different?
Alan
You're weird.
Narrator
Herman Schrader.
Kenny Schrader
But we've got Rick Mass filling in, so we went to the very top, got the best we could.
Rick Mast
You did. You really did. Where is. Where is our buddy? He's in Europe touring again. Did his. Did Raquel, his wife, go with him? Did he go by himself again?
Kenny Schrader
No, he went with his buddy. Right? Yeah, I saw him.
Rick Mast
Okay, good deal.
Kenny Schrader
I saw him. They were all stretched out. Not together, but they were all stretched out. Flying fancy coach. Fancy, whatever. I don't know. Over there. And I saw he posted some stuff where he's in Greece, so I don't know. I would love to go to some of that stuff, but I still got a job.
Rick Mast
Yeah, well, you could be cultured. You could be cultured. Kidding.
Kenny Schrader
You can see all that stuff for the Internet. And now I saw both. I actually text with you guys yesterday. You guys look like you were having a good time. And I was told by my wife that we're going next year for sure. But it looks like Darlington the whole race. And then you, Rick, you didn't get our buddy Allen in, but you were hobnobbing with the alumni stuff.
Rick Mast
Hey, man, you. I don't know, Schrader. I was sitting there the whole weekend thinking, why isn't Schrader here? He told me he wanted to go win a race somewhere. It paid five grand. I don't know what the deal was, but good grief, what an extraordinary time. It's pretty wild what they're doing with that alumni group. I mean, this is the third year, I guess, we've been in existence, and golly, boom, heck, everybody, man, everybody. NASCAR does it upright. Big, nice area and hard cards and all the free foods you can eat, right? And I had the opportunity, or I guess it was called opportunity. All day Saturday, I hosted Q and A's with all our buddies, Schrader. All of our buddies, our drivers and our crew chiefs. It was. I think we did four or five sessions Saturday, right? And then Sunday, we ended up Sunday with brothers Labani and Hermes Sadler on stage with me. So it was a lot of fun hosting the, hosting those things and for NASCAR and alumni group. But goodness gracious is such a cool deal, right? Everybody, you know, everybody, Harry, Marcus, Randall, Joy, just, you name it, one of day Skinner. Oh man, our buddy Sterling was there, as you called him, shaky. Our buddy Sterling was there. You know, got to see Stevie and, and Daryl, just everybody, man. Really. Honestly, you, Schrader, are probably about the only one not there, if you can believe that.
Kenny Schrader
Well, I will be there. I will be there next year. And Alan, you, you made a last minute decision to go to the races.
Alan
Yeah, it was, it was total last minute. You know, like I've told y' all before growing up down there, I mean I've been going to Darlington all my life. I mean even, even before I could remember, you know, when I was 3 and 4 years old and my youngest son had a basketball tournament yesterday and it got over and I was driving back to the house about 10:30 and I said, man, this weather's perfect so I'm going to ask my oldest son if he wants to, if he wants to go to the race. I said they should have a great walk up crowd and he said he wanted to go. He loves, you know, taking photographs and stuff like that. So we got, we got tickets and set in turn one, which means I've literally set everywhere at that racetrack from the old Brazington stands that were covered turn four to the old front straightaway to the Pearson Tower to the Tyler Tower to the short stands on the back straightaway now to the Brazington in turn one and, and I'll tell you what, man, again I have, I have sat there all my life but I, you know, different places there at Darlington all my life. And I wondered what that was going to be like sitting, going into turn one and seeing that perspective, boy, that was, that's different. I mean they are coming right straight at you, going there in the term one and then you know, you know how close you guys ran up the wall there. So it was great. And, and you know, Schrader, you and I were talking about it and I'm sure Rick, you know, had the perspective from inside the racetrack. That's the first March race I've been to Darlington in a long time. That was some crowd. I mean there was no excuses with the weather the way it was yesterday, but man, that was, that looked like a humongous crowd to me from where I was sitting.
Rick Mast
Same way with us, man, it was golly Boom. Looked around, people everywhere just packed. And did you get hot, Alan, sitting right there where you were? The sun was bearing down on you. Did you have trouble with that?
Alan
Well, before we left, I told, I told my son, Clinton, I said, just, just get a couple of propels and a couple of lemonades and we'll be fine. Because he likes drinking Minute Maid. And we got there to the racetrack and I drank as soon as I got in the stands. I mean, I just slammed one. I said, crap. And I looked in there and he had four lemonades and there were three more propels left. And I said, son, I am so glad you didn't listen to. That was perfect. What he packed in there was the perfect amount. And, but yeah, it was, it was warm out there. I mean, it was great. It was, it was nice. And, you know, I loved. That was the weekend that used to be the Trans south weekend. And they had moved, you know, they've moved the spring race all over the place. March, April, May, all this. So to get it back to win, it was. And personally, listen, I understand the lights and the night races and all this kind of stuff. We all know the ratings stink for the night races. They could say what they want to, but you can look at ratings and they all stink. Personally, I don't think there should be a race at Darlington that's not during the day. And I know you boys race during the Southern 500, but I'm going to in August and September during the day. I'm going to tell you right now, you got to be a man to run at that place on Labor Day in the heat of the day. These guys today don't know how good they got it, because I remember sitting in the stands and people having heat strokes in the stands. It was so hot at Darlington. That's how you race that racetrack.
Kenny Schrader
I, I, I wonder. Okay, first off, two things here. I knew it was going to be a big deal when I turned on TV and I got to see DW Grid walk with Mikey. So then DW doing his boogie boogity, which always drove me crazy, but it was sure neat to hear him do it yesterday. That was fantastic. But I do have a question. I mean, Rick, whether you agree or not, you let me know. But them guys, we, we, we thought we drove hard. We did, we did drive hard. But they're driving their asses off now. I, I mean, they're driving their asses off and, But I do, I just, I want to know what the hell is the difference? They say those cars are so hot. And like little Reddick's cool suit didn't work, but he gets out of the car, he jumps on the roof, he jogs up to get the checker flag, and his hair is not wet. What? What, What. What am I missing?
Rick Mast
I don't know. Everybody there? Kenny. Everybody there. I noticed. Kenny, where's. They're wearing the cool suits, right? They're all wearing the cool suits. And I'm like, okay, that's what's going on. And then his cool suit quits. They pump the fluid out of it, and he. I'm like, you get out of car. I figured he'd be winded or they'd have the rescue waiting on him, but, you know, they got that big hole in the windshield. They pump it. They put. They can pump a ton of air just directly in on the driver. I'm assuming that's the only thing that saves them is that big tunnel thing they've got where they dump all the air that they want to on the driver. Because everybody says the cars are a lot hot, a lot hotter and all that. And so that's. You know, I thought the same thing yesterday, being you had the same thoughts when he got out. Only thing I can say is maybe, you know, because they dump all the air on the guys. Now that. And that was added, if you remember, sometime in the evolution of this car, they added that big deal there to dump air on the guy. So maybe that's it. Other than that, because they're no better shape than we were, I don't think. Well, maybe some of it
Kenny Schrader
really, you're gonna say that,
Rick Mast
but. And yeah, I'm right, you. They do drive their ass off. But it's all relative, Kenny. No matter if you're. If you're out there in a red Flyer wagon, man, with a little Honda motor on it, you're going to drive it things. The little tires feel like they're going to wreck or fall off or you hit the wall. It's the same thing. It's all relative.
Kenny Schrader
And it's so easy there. It's so much going on. It's so easy to just mess up just a little bit. I mean, we see. We see Danny Hamlin go in there and drop kick the 43 car. Now, that's not Denny Hamlin style, you know, but he just. He just. He just got into him a little bit. Didn't. You know, when they showed his in car, it didn't look like just a little bit. But here, our 10th winningest driver in the history of our Sport and still going strong, just, you know, miscalculates a little bit. And that, sure not what you would expect from him, but it's. That place is so demanding. And when. When people get on different tires. I don't know how much were the tires slowing down yesterday? Probably three seconds or so. Were they that much or more?
Rick Mast
I don't know what. What it was, but it was a lot. I could. You could visually see it, right? I could visually see. I'm sure you did too, Al.
Alan
Yeah, my. My kid asked me. They had. They had pitted, you know, at the end of the second stage. And then I think that was when the. The deal with Eric Jones and Hamlin happened. Maybe, I don't know, 15 laps, 10, 15 laps after they went back under green. And, you know, he doesn't follow it or watch it like I did growing up or anything like that. So they all come back down in the pits. And he said, why are they pitting again? Said. I said, son, man, I said, this racetrack is. This is not like anything you've ever seen. And then, you know, when they're making those green flag pit stops, you got the leader getting his doors blown off by a car that's, you know, five layups down in 30th place. I did want to ask you, though, Kenny. I remember going to Darlington in 1990, and it's funny, because it was. It was the same thing. My granddaddy had got tickets from a guy that went to our church that owned a Western auto, and he didn't want to go to the race. And it was like, when we got to church, he said, do you want to go to the race? And I'm like, are you crazy? I was like, yeah, I want to get to the race. And that was one, if I remember right, where you and Brett Bodine got into it. He was driving for Bud Moore or something like that, or. No, Morgan Shepard. It's Morgan Shepard. And. And I remember, you know, you could hear MRN over the speakers. And they interviewed Bud Moore, and he said something about going and finding you and hitting you upside the head with a lug wrench or something like. You remember that?
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, I remember parts. Yeah. Yeah. Just. I felt like I got put in a wall. And it was the second time that it had to be Southern 500 because it was second time that year. And it was.
Alan
It was.
Kenny Schrader
So I sat in the car and it's hot. And they spent forever fixing it. Mr. Rick came up here. Here's some water. Said, no, I don't want It. I want to stay in here. I want to stay hot and mad. And I got. I got him first lap back out on the racetrack. Now I. You know, I was like a kamikaze pilot. I killed myself doing it, but I knocked myself out the rest of the way, and. And I didn't. I didn't. I didn't destroy him. I just crippled him. I didn't do. Good job. Then I left the racetrack. They told me they want to see me in NASCAR trailer after the race, and I left the racetrack. I said, I don't care. What are they going to do? A lot. But anyway, I left the racetrack and Elma Langley, Elmo was great. It was the pace car driver. Then he calls me up Monday and says, hey, you messed up. I said, yeah, I'm. I'm thinking. I realize that more now than I did yesterday. So they wanted to see me in the NASCAR trailer at Richmond before I ever went out onto the surface. So I went in with Dick Beatty
Alan
and
Kenny Schrader
Les Richter, and we discussed it, and I fessed up about trying to kill him. And we. They worked out a fine. And that was it.
Alan
That one.
Kenny Schrader
There's actually a little more to it, like, but I don't want to go into it, but it was. It was pretty. It was the old days of nascar. It wouldn't happen like that anymore, but it was. It was pretty cool. That's when one of the times I realized that NASCAR is not the enemy. They're just trying to keep all the clowns under control. But it was. It was cold. Yeah, it was. It was a big, hot day. Those races were hot, man. They were hot. We lost power steering there one time with about just a little Petrie's car right before halfway, and he got a pump or something on it and never caught another yellow to get the belt on. And I don't know how many times I hit the wall the last 20 laps because I just could not turn it. Just couldn't turn it anymore. Came down pit road after race, got out of the car, barely infield Care center, couple bags of that stuff they pour in you and hopped on Rusty's plane, went and raced out in Los Angeles the next day because it was Labor Day. You know, we ran her on Sunday, but it was fun. Always loved Darlington.
Alan
I got. I got three points about the race I want to ask you guys about, and I'll put them out here, and then y' all could just kind of take them, obviously. Tyler Reddick, fourth win in six races. And I got to thinking about this So I looked it up because I wanted to make sure I was right about this. It's the first time since 1992 that a driver's won four. The first six races that year Bill Elliott won. He got that wreck at Daytona and then won the next four races. So that was four. The first five. And Earnhardt was the only other driver in the modern era to do it. He did it in 1987 for the first six races. That's the first thing. Second thing is RFK. There was a one point in the race briefly where they were the top three cars. And then the third point is. Is Blaney's pit crew. I mean, how many times are they going to kill him this year? Early in the race on a pit stop, he. I watched, and he, you know, he comes in and he's second or whatever, and whatever happens and they lose all those spots, and it took him all day to get back to third. And. And I'm. Maybe it's just because I watch him a little bit closer, because I do. I do like him and I do pull for him, but, man, it sure seems like his pit crew puts him in a bad spot a lot.
Rick Mast
Yeah, I was. I've been with, you know, a couple times in my career. You know, I would need tires. You need tires. And I'm like, man, I don't know if it's better off to get tires or. And lose 50 or 40 spots. Like, I know I'm going to lose, or just stay out here and just keep sliding around. I mean. I mean, I've had some pit guys that time. A couple times that. That were. That we were that slow. I'm like, I don't really want to pick because I'm going to lose all these positions, but if I stay out here, I'm going to lose them anyhow, so what difference does it make, right? And that's not a good. It's not a good situation. That's not a good feeling. But I want to go back to that one point. You talking about Reddick winning these races. The thing in Trader. We need to elaborate on this. This goes to getting the call, right? All the folks, all the conspiracy folks we got out here on social media right now about. Well, they sued NASCAR. So NASCAR's. Now, this is part of the agreement. NASCAR's going to let Riddick win all these races. And I'm reading all this, and it's hilarious to read, right? Because, you know, as a racer, kind of what the deal is. And, yeah, maybe 30 years ago, an official Would miss something on the car as it went through tech. Right. Or something like that, but never a conceded effort on NASCAR's part to help it. And I use the example, you know, if this stuff truly went on with NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Would be a multi champion and you know, probably 60 or 70 wins because one of the best things that could have happened to our Sport is Earnhardt Jr. To be that. Right. So if NASCAR had that power to do that, you decide that with. With Dale Jr. But man, oh man, oh man, these guys, and I mean if they really get serious about it, they really truly believe, you know, because of the lawsuit. This was part of the settlement of the lawsuit. Man, we're going to let this 45 car. Well, I don't know how they determine if you're going to let the 25 or 45 or Bubba. Right. So it must just have been Reddick. They must said, all right, pick one car. We're going, we're going to do something for you to let you win all these races. But it's hilarious when I read this stuff and it's a little bit frustrating because some people truly do believe this stuff. And Kenny, I mean, I love your quote. Get to get the call, not get it.
Kenny Schrader
Well, I don't. Yeah. So I ran 29 years around cup race. So you take away the first couple because you don't have a clue what you're doing. Take away the last nine, let's say either 29, say 15 years that we were in something that had a shot, you know, and we never, we never got called into the trailer a whole lot. We never got arrested and brought them bad publicity or anything. And it got along good with them.
Alan
You were on a very popular show.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, but they never gave me the damn call. You and Michael never got the call. I don't think there's calls now. There were at times officials that sometimes didn't pay enough attention, but no one got, I don't. No one got any phone calls. No one got to call. We didn't have text then, but you know, no, no one got the message. So that's, that's all just bull for sure. But now back here for races deal. A buddy text me yesterday some graph of how much faster the 2311 cars were in qualifying. But if everybody's got the exact same car, you only gotta. You only gotta find a little little something to separate yourself. Now finding that little little something is really hard, you know, but they've, they've got it right now. I don't Believe it's anything that's getting looked at or not looked at, an inspection or anything like that. It's just they've got their combination right. So we've seen it how many times our team gets on a roll, you know, and it's we're six races in. Six. Yeah, we've won four. Let's, let's, let's, let's see. November, you know, that'll tell us. But they're on a great roll. And I'm glad, you know, glad for Tyler. I mean Tyler drove for us 19 oh something. I remember when he showed up around here in the Midwest just a little, you know, little. Anyway, when he was 13, he was really little. So just glad to see it for him.

what do you all think about RFK? Do you think they've turned a corner or, or is it a combination maybe of that and Darlington? Because they have ran really good at Darlington the last few years.
Rick Mast
Yeah, if he, if they, you know that, that's, that's the, the deal, man. It's kind of like a three car at Richmond. You're like, you know, last couple races he's been dominant there. But they can't get out of their own way at other places in the 6 car. RFK as a group have been good at Darlington. Right? And they were good. They were good again this week. And you're like, you know, you find that little thing and touch on Kenny's point. Man, these cars are ridiculous. They're ridiculously close. Finite. So finite on the. On the setups. Did you see this thing, guys, last week, McReynolds did about the ride height on the rear and how much that changes the downforce with the. With the diffuser on the back. You don't quote me on the numbers, but if you raise the car one quarter of an inch or an eighth of an inch in the back, you got. You're changing two or three or 400 pounds of downforce right in the back of the car just by a little bit of ride height difference. Well, that tells you. That gives you a little indication. I mean, me and Schrader in our day when we first started, man, if you had a car that had 200 pounds of downforce, you had a pretty good race car, and it didn't matter if you raised it up or set it down or what you did, you kind of had the same thing. And these guys fighting these cars now, they're so close with everything. But, you know, maybe certain tracks take a. You know, the 6 car, 17 at Darlington, and the 3 car at Richmond. I'm like, you know, it kind of dispels the myth of if you find something on these cars that make it work, make it work, right? It's going to work everywhere. And that. That. Those two. Those two examples there kind of dispel that belief. If you. If you. I guess if you could say that, yeah.
Kenny Schrader
When. When we were running it, especially at the start we were running, our biggest concern about the bottom of the car was keeping it below the top of the car. I mean, as long as it wasn't upside down, that was. That was our biggest concern about the bottom, you know, just keeping it on the bottom.
Rick Mast
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we did that a couple times, too. Being you both.
Kenny Schrader
How many times you get upside down? The cup car?
Rick Mast
Only. Only all the way upside down. Only once, Kenny.
Kenny Schrader
Well, you're not. If you're not.
Rick Mast
And that was.
Kenny Schrader
You got to be all the way upside down to be upside down. Rick,
Rick Mast
do what?
Kenny Schrader
You got to be all the way upside down to be upside down. If you're on your side. Well, I know, but if you're on your side.
Rick Mast
I know, but if you're in there. Yeah, but if you're in the air, right, and you look and you're looking, you know, at out the windshield and all you see is blue sky, you know something's wrong. All right. And Another time. If you're. If you're in the car and you're looking through the windshield and all you see is dirt below you, you know, you know something's wrong. Okay. As it ends up, you end up looking. When it all stops you. You're where you're supposed to be. But Talladega never did that. Talladega was real quiet, man. You get up there, gets real quiet, you know, and it gets real surreal, you might say. If you look at that wreck, that car when it was upside down at Talladega, that thing hit the wall so hard upside down at the Apostle. It hit on the A post right at my feet. It buckled. It knocked the A post over with the roll cage there at the door bars. It buckled the floorboard right there. Right? That's how hard that thing hit. And to this day, I don't remember it hitting because I guess I was scared to death. And I had somebody, another neat story about that deal. Somebody say, rick, what was you thinking when you was upside down sliding? I'm like, well, you know, hold on. Who's going to hit me? Who's going to start flipping all this? They said, no, what were you doing? I said, just hold on. Go back and watch the tape, Rick, and watch your wheels. I said, what do you mean, watch it? So I went back and watched it and I was upside down and all four wheels were. Just to get them and they were running wide open and all of a sudden all four, all four wheels went and it stopped. So sometime during that process when I was upside down, I hit the brake pedal trying to hold it down. But, you know, it doesn't work when the tires are not a tight attached to the ground.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, yeah. Now it's, it gets quiet and then it gets real loud again before it stops.
Rick Mast
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
So how do we get our net. What was.
Alan
All right, I. Yeah.
Rick Mast
I'm sorry, Alan. I'm sorry, Al. We're getting away from here.
Alan
No, no, no, listen, it's all about. It's. It's about the stories and, and where they go. It doesn't really have to. Has to pertain. And you guys did touch on all the points. I do. Speaking of points, every week we go through the top 10 points. Top 10 and race results. I'm actually going to start with the points and then go to the race results for, for a reason here. So Tyler Reddick, obviously the points leader. Ryan Blaney moves up second. Now Bubba Wallace down to third. Danny Hamlin, Chase Elliot. Chase Elliot struggled just, especially in the second Half of that race they just could not get that car going. William all the Hendrick cars actually, you know, Larson was up there in the top three, but he had a mechanical problem but not like you're used to seeing. So William Byron six in points. Chris Bucher, Civic. Christopher Bale eighth. Brad Keselowski up to ninth. Kyle Larson intent. So Joey Logano, they were just off horrible all weekend. He's one of the big ones right now, back 16th in points. Chase Briscoe, he's 22nd in points. Kyle Busch 23rd in points. And then if we look at the top 10 in the race and I'll tell you why I'm going here, Reddick was the winner. Keselowski, Blaney, host Var Cindrick, Ty Gibbs, Daniel Suarez, William Byron, Chris Bucher and Erik Jones. So I hadn't been to a Cup race in a, in a few years. This Joseph are phenomenon is a real thing. I could not believe how many people in the grandstands are wearing host of our T shirts. And the other thing about it is, is they're, they're Gen z, they're, they're 20 somethings. I mean that, that's a real. And you know he, he was a rocket at the end of that race and ended up finishing fourth. But it was a real eye opener to me because I didn't, I was like, I don't think he, people like him that much, you know, because he gets out there and ruffles feathers and all that sort of thing. But man, I sure was surprised with everything I saw there out of the fans.
Kenny Schrader
I, I don't, I don't know. Carson obviously want to meet him, but there's nothing I don't like about him. I see that he was driving at one of them like a car at the races, you know, in a streetcar was painted up like one of Dale Senior's old cars. He was driving that around some. I mean, I don't know what, what's there not to like about him? Got a cool sponsor with Chili's, you know, and he's on the gas man, that whole Spire team there who talk. I mean, I think they came out of nowhere fairly quick. When we see people come together, I don't know how many years they've been out there. Now you tell me Al and I don't, I don't know. I saw that 2311, this is their sixth year, you know, and they're obviously got it figured out, but that's something that this car did. You can buy this car, you don't have to hire all those people to build this car. You still got to hire the engineers and every, everybody to get it set up. But you know, it, it made it possible to come into this sport now and run better.
Alan
Rick, did you notice that with who some are. I mean, did you, did you see that?
Rick Mast
Yeah. The thing of it is, Alan with him. Here's the deal. It's crazy for me to think about each race when I'm watching on TV. I'm looking for the friggin 77 car and I don't ever do that. I just don't do that. I look at it like all the guys running and figuring out. But I have caught myself every race this year looking for the 77 car. And I did it at Darlington when I was there live, right? And I'm like you, I noticed the same thing. There are people in the garage area walking around with, with the host of our stuff and I'm like, man, this thing's taken off of this guy. I'm happy for him. You know, I don't know because he, he ruffled so many feathers and so many people get mad at him and don't want to race with him, you know, because every week you've got a couple of drivers ragged on the boy, right? And then you've got, you've got people that love what he does, you know, There was a driver yesterday, I'm not going to tell you who, but an alumni driver told me he had a conversation with Jose Var two or three weeks ago somewhere and told him, boy, let me tell you what you need to do. What's that? He said, don't change the thing. Don't change the thing. Keep doing exactly what you're doing, right? Because we've seen so many guys neutered Kenny, you've seen it. Guys come in, you know, in one of the Q and A deals we did, I had Ernie Irvin was on, on stage with me and I, I kind of got on him a little bit. I said, guys, all the fans. I said, here's Ernie called him Sor, Sorv and Irving. I said, he used to wreck us all the time. Everywhere we'd go, he'd be up in our fenders wrecking all of us. I said, finally calls the big, he called, he calls the big one at Talladega and I think it broke Kyle's leg at that. Anyhow, next week Ernie gets up in front of everybody, the driver's beaten and apologizes and says, I'm going to stop that. And I said from that moment forward, Ernie quit wrecking people. Right. And he kept winning. Right. The problem guys, when you neuter these guys sometimes to keep them from doing what they were doing, they slowed down and that's what, that's what you hate. That's like with host of our. I don't want him to get neutered so bad that it slows down. You know, a lot of guys can stop record and keep going like Ernie. A lot of guys, man, they stop recording, they just don't have that edge again. And that, you know, Joseph are, he fits that mold exactly right now it's going to be. To me it's going to be interesting to watch how it goes with that guy.
Kenny Schrader
He hasn't wrecked anybody last couple of weeks, has he? I mean he's, he's, I mean he's going to run, he's just going to run fast. He doesn't need to wreck anybody. But he's, he's going to know I like him.
Alan
Here, here's what I don't understand. So he just signed a big contract again with Spire. And what I, the reason I say I don't understand that is let's just be honest, there's a good chance there's probably going to be a change with that 48 car pretty soon now. And I know contracts don't mean anything necessarily, but why would you sign a long term contract with the possibility of having a chance to, to get into another Chevrolet and maybe it be Hendrick Unless you absolutely know you're not.
Kenny Schrader
What about if Spire and Hendrick are intertwined enough and good enough partnership that he's in the fold? I don't know but I'm just saying that could be.
Rick Mast
Yeah, that, that makes sense. Kenny. I, you know, that's a good point, Al. That's a real good point. Right. I mean but a lot of times in racing band you'll take that, that bird in the hand, you know, instead of waiting. Instead of waiting because you know there's only so many ride seats available. There's a lot of drivers that want to do what you're doing. So you, you know, and I've done, I done, I did that my career. I made terrible, a couple of bad mistakes. Right. By just going for security instead of going for the races. The race team I should have went through OR four and with host of our who knows. But it could be that they've got a, you know, a good enough deal with Hendrick or knowing they're going to have a good enough deal with Hendrik or enough in Carson's buy. They say, sorry, this will be good, right? So a lot of reasons could, could have caused that. But very good question though. That was, that's a good question. Never thought about it like that with him.
Kenny Schrader
So Rick, I go to sign with, go to meet with Mr. Don Levy, first year and he tells me this and this and we're going to do this. And I said, okay, do we need to have a contract? Mr. He said, no. He said, I got contracts back in my desk that are that thick and when they quit sending the money, I just figured they weren't good anymore. And he said, this way, this way if a better team calls you, you have the opportunity to go drive for them. You won't be locked in with us. Oh cool. I say, hey, wait a minute. What if a better driver, what if a better driver calls you? He said, well, I'll have the same option.

Kenny Schrader
Hey Alan. What? What's that? Who's the guy that we always get to who like the race? What percentage deal from
Alan
Jeff Cluck? Let me look at that. And while I look that up because I want to touch on Martinsville and obviously dirt racing with you, Kenny, the truck race Friday night, Corey Haim goes out there and wins it. I think that moves him up to like fifth on the wins list or something like that. He's high up there on the wins list now and again. Listen, I know he's going to get his shot, but it's a crying shame that that guy's not driving something full time this year and, and you hear things about Toyota and Gibbs and this and that and the next Thing, but if I'm Toyota, which, listen, he's probably getting groomed to take over the 11 at some point. Maybe even promises have been made, but they better be careful because we've seen a lot of guys, Casey, Kane, Ford brought him up through the ranks and he ended up, you know, going to Chevrolet. It's happened to a lot of guys. And I'm telling you, he's not going to just sit there and keep picking and having little races every now and again here and there.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. We also don't know what he's got in the. I mean, what he's got promised, which promise doesn't mean much, but we don't know. But you're right 100%. He's. He's. That was a pretty impressive last lap pass. I don't know what the tire situation was for the two of them, but he just drove down in under underneath him, cleared him by a substantial amount, and rode off into the sunset. Now, he only had to ride off less than a quarter lap, but that was, that was an impressive pass.
Rick Mast
Yeah. To your point, Alan, I'm the same way. Right. I mean, obviously the guy's got loaded with talent. Right. And I'm. It's kind of like Kenny saying, I, I truly think that there is something worked out with that guy. You know, we don't, we don't know what it is now. It. Maybe it's not. Maybe it's not. If it's not, there's a golden opportunity for the owner to get a hell of a driver or a heck of a driver. But I'm, I'm kind of like you guys. I really think probably something with that guy's worked out that we don't know about. Well, maybe find out in a few months.
Alan
So there's 24 hours, 21 hours and 27 minutes at this point left in. In Jeff Gluck's poll. Was Darlington a good race? Yes. 77%. No, 23%. That is a good. I think that's a good group of fans because you could sit there and you say, oh, there wasn't any wrecks. Oh, there wasn't this. There wasn't that the next thing. But that was a good race yesterday and it didn't need a whole bunch of wrecks and a whole bunch of cautions. And that's a, That's a smart group of fans, I think, to look at it and see it that way.
Kenny Schrader
How many fans was that? How many votes?
Alan
7,899 right now. So it's a pretty Pretty good size group there.
Kenny Schrader
That. That. That number really makes me happy because Darlington's not a typically. Although our sport has got a lot more photo finish, close finishes than it did years ago. It's. You know, there's more and more of them in our sport now, but that's not one of the tracks that typically has, you know, a photo finish or anything like that. So that. That makes. That makes me real happy. About to see that number there. The sport makes me real happy.
Alan
I saw a guy on my Facebook page and he said NASCAR ruined Darlington. And somebody asked him and said, why do you say that? And he said, oh, they. You know, it's. There wasn't any action. And everybody talks about how tough this racetrack is and this net and next thing. And I'll tell you again, having gone to Darlington, all my life, I've seen races where there were 15 cautions at Darlington, and I've seen races where there were three. So there's nothing new to me about anything that happened in that race.
Rick Mast
Yeah, I mean, that from. From a racist standpoint, man. I mean, traditionalist, right? It was way more competitive than competitive than, say, our fan that's 65 years old. It's watching his whole. Watching his whole life, a lot more competitive than it was when he was first watching our racing. Right. All the drivers are doing the same thing. Me and Kenny, we did it. These guys today, Reddick's doing it. Curtis Turner, Fireball Robber, everybody did the same thing in the car. You get in the car as a driver, you push it to the limit, you drive it as hard as you can drive it without wrecking. Right. Or without hitting somebody. That part doesn't change. It never changes. No matter what car is under you. And when you get out of the car, of course, all that's the politics and all that's different. But these cars right now with these guys, the way that they're so close to their setups, it just naturally makes these. These fields tighter than what they used to be. Right. Years ago. And to go to Darlington and see all that and, you know, I got the chance to interact with a lot of fans, man, and these people were excited. They were really excited. They were really excited that they, you know, it's kind of like the conversation I had with quite a few people keep bringing this stuff up because I mingled with them right when I was doing those Q and A's later walking around. But they were, like, so appreciative that they got the race taken away from them, and now they've got Both races back and they're like, see, we knew it. We knew it all along. We do. Shouldn't take a race away from us. You know, we support this place and we've got all the races here back like it used to be. So the excitement's there. It's just a matter of having more people excited.
Kenny Schrader
Let's. Let me ask you this, okay? So you're out in the, in the group, in the, in the, in the pile. What, what. What's average age of our. Of our people out there?
Rick Mast
You know, honestly, Kenny, surprising enough, I had met a lot of. Lot of younger people, right? I mean, even come through the autograph lines. Of course we had our normal group like, well was there. But I just saw tons and tons of younger people. I mean, like, I saw a lot of like they look like 20s, in their 20s, mid-20s, like that.
Kenny Schrader
Well, when you're older, like your age, everybody looks younger. But go ahead. I didn't mean to interrupt. Go ahead.
Rick Mast
I understand, I understand that Schrader. I understand that. But I wasn't the oldest one at the alumni group all weekend, I could tell you that.
Kenny Schrader
Okay.
Rick Mast
But yeah, that was the other point and I meant to bring this point up and I forgot about it. Thank you for reminded me, Kitty. But yeah, it was a lot of younger people and they all walk around wearing the shirts and buying stuff off the souvenir trailer, right? I'm like, dang, man, we're turning some kind of corner. Something's happening right now that we're not picking up on because, man, for so long you go, heck, you just didn't see them, see young people. I mean, back in our day, Alan, good lord a mercy. Everybody was young and kids running around everywhere and you had the older ones. You know, it was a good mix of people then for a few years, man, we just didn't see many young people. But you know, and I haven't kept up with it. I haven't watched it, of course, as the first race I've been through this year. But I'm going to start watching that and paying attention that we go from here on out because yeah, a lot of young people.
Alan
Well, I, because I do want to move on to Martinsville and Darlington are in dirt. We're pretty far in the show. But I'll tell you a couple things. Hopefully we see a similar turnout for Rockingham Easter weekend we saw at Darlington and that that we saw last year there. This is going to be the real test because you go on back this year and I think that Place deserves a cup race. They got. They're going to have to do something and get a few more seats there. I think they got about 20,000 right now, and I don't think they need to go crazy, but they, they need to get a few more seats there. But I'll give you a perfect example. When that race went green yesterday. Again, I've been going to Darlington for over 40 years, since I was a very little boy and this was my son's first oval cup race. We went to the Roval, but this. And he's 15 again, not a fan like I am. And when those cars went into turn one, me and him both looked at each other like it still hadn't changed. That part of it for me has not changed. And for him seeing and listen, he loves airplanes and jets and rockets and all this kind of stuff. And he looked like he just saw a space shuttle whenever they went into turn one. Because I told him, I said, we're going to be sitting low and you, you're not going to believe the speed. You can't judge the speed when you're sitting at the top of the grandstands, but when you're sitting down there close to the racetrack and it hadn't changed for me and to see that look on his face and the fact that we both had that look on our face is what. What surprised me. And I'm so glad that he, he wanted to do it. Shifting now to. To Martinsville, just like I'm talking about Darlington, Martinsville is exactly the same for you. Rick, when, when, when do you remember going to Martinsville for the first time? And how old were you and how old were you when you raced there the first time?
Rick Mast
Alan? We. I was racing dirt as a. Let's see, I would have been 16 years old. We went to a little track and it was 311 speedway in North Carolina to race one Saturday night. And I forget how, for whatever reasons we came through Martinsville the daytime and I remember stopping there. We stopped, I got out of the tow truck and I looked you could the crossover area going into turn four to get into infield. There was a gate there and they didn't have the big buffer wall up. All was. There was a guardrail. So I remember looking. I was there at the guardrail and I remember looking at the guardrail and looked down the front straightaway and I looked all around the racetrack and I'm like, and I'll never forget this, man, I looked at that thing. I'm like, man, I looked around like if I could ever, ever race on this racetrack, right? My life is complete. If I could ever get to Martinsville to do this, my life is complete. So what, two years later we go there and I was able to race there 104 cars or 5 cars. You qualify so many. Then you run the hooligan races, a lot of heat races and they take what, 30 cars or 35 cars. And we had that old Plymouth kit car thing we built and that car, it was doing okay in the heat race and we blew a motor, blew that engine. So that was by my first time there. But I never forget looking at that place. That's. Kenny, think about this. If I could ever, ever get to race on this racetrack, my career is complete, man. Of course things change once you get there, but golly, for us growing up in Virginia and, and later on in the late model stuff at all for us, Martinsville was always like Daytona for a lot of people in our, in our community. Just because that was the big deal. That was the, that was the big NASCAR deal. A couple hours down the road, right? And not just, just your lead people got to go there.
Alan
You won there, right? Bush races there.
Rick Mast
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And that heck of it is, it's like Nashville, man. I want to race their bush race. I didn't. It was the one race that weren't given clocks. I didn't get a friggin clock. I won Nashville bush race the one year out of 50 years. They don't give a friggin guitar, right? And I don't, I don't understand why. And then I watch what Kyle Busch or Kurt, I guess it was Kyle. Take a brand new guitar on stage at Nashville. Beats it up, tears it up, right? I'm like, man, don't do that. Just give it to me, give it to me.
Kenny Schrader
Because it's all about you.
Rick Mast
It is all about me. And I'm sorry, that's a long winded answer for my first time in Martinsville.
Kenny Schrader
I get, hey, I listen to you talking there. I get goosebumps thinking about first time you went one of them places and thinking like I just got. If. I mean it would be just my life would be complete if I could. I did that with Du Quoin Illinois on the mile dirt. You know, I went there with Daddy, I was like 9 years old and it was like, oh my gosh, what would this be like? And that was before I was racing, so I didn't even know, you know what I mean? You were racing. So you, you know, to make this Step would be so big. I didn't even know about the steps yet. I just thought this was the biggest place I'd ever seen. The fanciest place this was. I mean, there was Indy car drivers there that had raced at Indy that, you know, that was still a national championship race. And it's like it was the biggest racetrack in the world because I'd seen it. I hadn't seen Indianapolis or Daytona or none of that new coin. Illinois was the track who. I got goosebumps.
Alan
What? What? So the fans. Ever since we went to this next generation car, the races at Martinsville have not been particularly memorable. The fans have said that, you know, let's add the horsepower and adjust the downforce, which doesn't make a ton of difference at Martinsville, but the horsepower should be a big deal. Based on what you guys have seen of this car, do we think the horsepower is going to make that big a difference?
Kenny Schrader
I don't know how. How big a difference, but it's going to make a difference. When you, when you hit in the center of that turn at Martinsville and you're ready to come down in the throttle to go the other way, I mean, it used to be like, oh, my gosh, how much? I can't, I can't go flat, you know, I mean, the only time you go flat was maybe your second lap of qualifying if you think you had it underneath you. And then, you know, tires and track conditions wouldn't let you do it. But it's going to make a difference, the added horsepower.
Rick Mast
Yeah, I mean, yeah, it will. It will. You know, it's one of those deals. I mean, I've been there and race there and get another turn during the race and just drive it wide open. I've been able to do that. And that was without a lot of horsepower by particular engine that day. And it's also been where, you know, my car was really hooked up perfect to get off the corners, but very seldom do you. Was you able to do that. And these guys have to feather these cars anyhow. Right now, they're not able to apply all the horsepower to the ground and put more horsepower to it. The guys, it's what that does, really. It gives a little bit more to the driver. You put more in the driver's hands because, you know, we're going to have to. We're going to have to feather it more when we get in the gas. We're not able to just stomp it wide open and the car hooks up. Well, if they do, he'll lap the field, but, you know, more horsepower and less downforce. Always one way or the other, it always. It always puts more on the driver. And this deal here is going to make it. You know, where he's got to. He's got to feather it more, you know.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. Another thing really important about Martinsville is, is the air, because you can get right up underneath somebody and kind of, you know, help take the air off the car and then hit them and it'll move right out of the way.
Rick Mast
You ever do that?
Kenny Schrader
Well, I think.
Rick Mast
You ever do that.
Kenny Schrader
I think you did that to me at Martinsville, and that's how I learned that move. Hey, you know, one other thing we didn't say about Darlington is Justin Allgaier got the call again for. To win the Saturday race. He got the call. This is his last year. He got the call again.
Rick Mast
What did we do wrong, Schrader? We never got the cricket call.
Kenny Schrader
I don't know.
Rick Mast
You didn't get it, and I didn't get it. What did we do wrong, man?
Kenny Schrader
I don't know. Something.
Rick Mast
Yeah. I don't know. Yeah, and we put Earnhardt Jr. In that category, too. But,
Alan
yeah, we thought they liked Dale Jr. So, you know, I'm like you. That is. That is the greatest argument, though, because I've heard other people say it if, if you. And. And this was 15 years ago or longer and some, you know, everybody. The call to call to call. But, man, you go back to that Dale Junior thing and you'd say, Dale Junior is going to win 13 races this year. You know, he's going to win every other race. If that's the case. And. And that was. That was not the case. I mean, it was no different for him than it was anybody else.
Kenny Schrader
No, no, we need to ask him about that. Maybe he got the call and just decided it wasn't the right thing to do.
Rick Mast
Yeah, I don't know that I would accept it. I would probably, but I turn it down. Let me think here real quick.
Alan
No, no, no. Rick, you got the call at the first Brickyard, right?
Rick Mast
Yeah, that's right. I got to call up there. Yes, yes.
Kenny Schrader
You know when.
Rick Mast
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
When you get that call, if there was that call back in the day when we had 43 cars, you would think they'd have to call the other 42 and tell them about the call.
Rick Mast
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And all the officials.
Kenny Schrader
Somebody tried to mess.
Rick Mast
And all the officials walking around, they would have to know. All the officials walking around have to know.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
Alan
All the.
Rick Mast
All the Competitors have to know.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
Alan
So you, Rick, you got Nicole at Rockingham, but they forgot to tell Earnhardt.
Rick Mast
They did. That's exactly right. That's exactly right. They forgot. And Dale, you know, Dale, he would always take from us. He would never give to us.
Kenny Schrader
So he was a taker.
Rick Mast
That's pretty fitting.
Alan
I mean, he was only going to win his save the championship that day, you know, I mean, he was going to get enough attention as it was, Right?
Rick Mast
Yeah. And I really, you know, I'm still mad at Darrell to this day, man, because leading the race all day, man. Leading right there. What, 18 to go. All I got to do is finish the race. I waxed everybody all day leading. I come around and here's Daryl laid up all up in the wall in the middle. Three and four wrecked, right? The caution comes out. I'm like, oh, man. Because it would take me like 10 laps to really get going. And we have a caution to come out and Earnhardt beats us out of the pitch. We take off with four or five laps to go, you know, and I. He runs away and I run him right down, last lap trying to get by him. But I had one more lap, I could have hit him. And one.
Alan
And the younger fans forget. But back then, you know, a lot of people complained about it, but he always, he didn't qualify good. But he always had the pit spot because the champion got the first pit spot.
Rick Mast
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, well, we digress in it.
Rick Mast
Yeah, we digress your day. I'm sorry, Alan, I. I keep getting way off topic, man.

Alan
Well, Kenny, what's the dirt update this week? What? What happened this this week? And I Saw a little bit of your update with stars and yourself. Won't we share that? And what else went on?
Kenny Schrader
We, you know our dirt racing was little. We were right here at in St. Louis Federated Out Parts Raceway opener and Glenn ran sixth in his feature, did a good job and we had locked in our feature the night before. We started sixth. I worked my way back to about 14th, got back to about sixth or seventh, had a little thing where went in turn and kind of felt like I got chopped pretty bad and picked up a bad attitude and decided I'd push my way through. That was at the expense of my right front suspension. So we didn't finish. But it was a good opening night for the racetrack. Let's see the World Outlaw late Models were at Magnolia, Mississippi. Little Pierce won one and did Hudson win the second night or something? I think maybe Hudson o' Neal Outlaws were at two places in Oklahoma, Lawton and Creek county or something. I'm. I'm behind on this. And High Limits was at Casa Grande Central Arizona Raceway Thursday, Friday and Saturday. And it's getting to the point of the year which is stupid to say because it's still March. We got another March weekend but there's so many friggin races going on I can't keep track of.
Alan
Yeah, Hudson o' Neill had a huge weekend. He, he won the World Outlaws race at Magnolia and one hunt the front at Talladega.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, that would have been Sunday. I get a hunt front had been Sunday I think and I know, I
Alan
can't remember what series it was but I know Chris Madden won at Cherokee. I can't remember which division it was that was running there and I know he won at Cherokee and, and on the site on the short track scene to Tomojewski we talked about the Rattler last week he, he won his six Rattler at South Alabama so that probably took a little bit distinguish of a Darlington off for him.
Kenny Schrader
Well IHRA inaugural pavement oval. I mean stock car race. Oval track race was at. Was it Pulaski?
Alan
Well it was what they, they're calling Pulaski now. It was New river back in your day, right Rick? And then Pulaski and the Motor Mile at one point. And that's Pulaski again.
Rick Mast
Yeah, they had a, they had a good car count I understand they didn't have, didn't have a lot of. Didn't have a good attendance. But to add to you guys the famous racetrack naturally Speedway. We had the first open practice this past weekend. I think they start the regular series Next week. Kenny's been there many times racing.
Alan
All right, here's some. Here's some bad jokes. I know this is Kenny's favorite part of the show.
Kenny Schrader
The last 58 minutes has been a bad joke.
Alan
Well, I do know the last time Rick was on the show, he did like. He did like the joke. So here we go. I don't think these. I don't know if you'll like these at all. Okay. What does a baby computer call his father? Data. D A, T, A. Data. See, Rick likes them all, right? After.
Kenny Schrader
He's from.
Alan
After. Unsuccessful.
Rick Mast
Harry.
Alan
The healing waters.
Rick Mast
I've got to get some healing waters.
Alan
After an unsuccessful harvest, why did the farmer decide to try a career in music? Because he had sick beats. Beats. B, E, E, T. Sick beats. Get it? Okay, here's the last one. I only seem to get sick on weekdays. I must have a weekend immune system.
Rick Mast
See, these are so frigging dumb. They're hilarious, man.
Alan
I know.
Rick Mast
You got to find the humor and stuff, guys.
Alan
Oh, yeah. So what are we. What are we all up to this weekend? I'm. I'm going to try. My plan is to announce at Florence Saturday afternoon and then the Lakeview dirt track Saturday night. I think I can. Can pull that off. So that's. That's my plan. What about you two?
Rick Mast
I've got a 36 and a 37 Chevrolet back here in the old chicken house, and the roof's falling in on it, right? So now as they're starting to get weathered, I'm going to go back and drag those guys out, bring them up here to my other boss, my other place here, and get them under the weather because these were cars that my dad gave me years and years ago, and I was supposed to rebuild them and fix them. I haven't done it yet. So I got to get them out of the weather and get them. Get them dry. Get them dry before.
Kenny Schrader
Before you start fixing them or what? How long have we started? How long since this project was supposed to start?
Rick Mast
Well, he gave them to me when I was a teenager. So, you know, we're looking at a few decades.
Kenny Schrader
So this.
Alan
In fact.
Rick Mast
In fact, the sad part is my son Ricky, he told me here a while back, there were his cars. I said, what do you mean, your car? Said, granddaddy gave them to me. I said, no, he didn't. He gave them to me. He gave them to me years ago, before you were ever even born. He said, dad, I don't care. He told me that I can have them. I said, no. Unless I give them to you, you can't have them. But maybe if you restore them, I give them to you. Hell, he'll have less chance to do it than I will.
Alan
You know what will fix them right up? Get a little bit of that water in the soap from Rockbridge Bass and it'll get those cars fixed right.
Rick Mast
I'm going to bring you guys some of that moss and water and you'll see. You'll see.
Kenny Schrader
Did you have the cow when your daddy give them to you?
Rick Mast
Yes, I did. Yes I did.
Alan
He hadn't sold it yet.
Rick Mast
Shredder, what are you doing this weekend, man? Get off me.
Kenny Schrader
I'm. I'm going to one of the most beautiful racetracks in the country. Right down the road in Wheatland, Missouri. Lucas Oil Speedway, which the Forest Lucas is, just made a tremendous commitment to that place. It's beautiful. We're going there for a three day USRA race and they do a, they do a great job down there. I mean the state of the art, beautiful facility. So we're going down there, run Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Really looking forward to it.
Rick Mast
Sweet. Hey, Alan, Alan, one last question before we go. What was the end result of your 15 year old son when, when the race is over and you're going back home? What was his, what was his thoughts? I'm interested in that.
Alan
He, he loved it. When we were walking out, I spent, I said, you made it, you made it through your first 400 mile oval track race. What do you think? He said, I thought it was good. And I'm like, well, that's what I wanted to hear.
Rick Mast
Okay.
Alan
Now whether or not he'll come back or not, I don't know. But he's at that age right now where I'm kind of his hero right now, you know, so he, we're just, you know, he's 15 and y' all know, because you know, your children have been there, but you just kind of get to that point, you know, when, when your kids, a teenager, where you both just kind of want to be with each other. Cause you know the, the about to jump out of the nest here before too long. So it was, it was, it was great. It's. You know, I was thinking about it. My granddaddy went there to Darlington back in the 60s, you know, back in the wild days and the infield and stuff like that. And I went to races with him there and I went races with my parents there and went to a couple races with my wife there when we were dating. I don't think she's been back since we got married, but when we were dating, she's pretty interested in it and, and now to get there with my son, it's, it's just pretty good.
Kenny Schrader
Our, our show is about over for this week. I'm looking forward to Martinsville, but I can I know what you're talking about. You know, both of you about how big it is when you went to the racetrack for one of the first times. Because I remember my daddy taking me to Natural Bridge and watching Rick mast when I was just a little kid. And it's something I'll never forget. So until next week, the Herman Schrader show says goodbye.
