boy, there's a lot to talk about. Kenny, what did you do over the weekend?

Well, all I did was went to Toledo. Well, we were. We were up in Mexico. We were up in Canada.

Same thing.

Yeah, we were up in Canada. Wednesday I rode motorcyc. That was fun. And you won the race. Kicked their butts. Great. Made you happy. Great crowd for the World Outlaws. They got rained out Tuesday. They had late models this sport class at Ashweigan. We ran the modifieds with them Wednesday. Fantastic crowd, Great race. They ran all over the racetrack. Top, bottom, middle

there.

[Rusty Wallace]

Wednesday. Then I went to Toledo, run the figure eight school bus race, and we were leading at the end of that. So that worked out. Then rode your motorcycle home and was going to Moberly Missouri. And they canceled it. So we was headed to Springfield in the ramp truck. And the ramp truck laid down.

[Kenny Wallace]

Oh, Lord.

[Rusty Wallace]

So we did not race Saturday night. So that's. That hurt.

[Kenny Wallace]

Well, Kenny, I want to talk about

[Herman Schrader]

a couple things you said right there just because I found it amazing.

[Kenny Wallace]

So we all know that you go up to Oshwegon.

[Herman Schrader]

That's big for you with Federated Auto Parts.

[Kenny Wallace]

And it was a Federated Auto Parts race.

[Herman Schrader]

But man, I was amazed because you've always taught me.

[Kenny Wallace]

Sold out.

[Herman Schrader]

Shoulder to shoulder. Why do you think that it was shoulder to shoulder?

[Kenny Wallace]

And at 9:30 at night, they.

[Herman Schrader]

They sold the grandstands out. But at 9:30 at night, there was

a line to get into the pits.

[Herman Schrader]

Why do you think Osh Wigan was such a success?

[Rusty Wallace]

Well, the, you know, the two major sprint car series, World Outlaws and High Limits, don't get north of the border really at all. Now they get close. They go up there to Ransomville and they run sprint cars at Ashweak and every week. So you have a good sprint car crowd, a good base. They're having a great year. The track's doing good, but it's just, you know, World Outlaws would do that every place they go, you know, they have those type of crowds. So it's just good to see a lot of good races. Toledo for the bus race had people. The ARCA and truck race at IRP Friday night had people. Our Shark Tracks are doing fine. Weekly shows are a challenge, but you know, the specials are, are. Appear to be doing pretty damn good.

[Deets Arnett]

And I'll say on Canada, I, I don't understand why NASCAR has not gotten a cup race up there. They should have been running cup races up there for 15 years now. And I'm not sure why that can't get worked out or figured out, but hopefully it will because they got. There's some great race fans up there.

[Kenny Wallace]

Listen, I gotta add to that, you're

[Herman Schrader]

right, because like Kenny said, we were both up there and I had several fans come up to me, when are we gonna get NASCAR up here?

[Kenny Wallace]

I'm like, well, you already got the

trucks and no cup, so.

Yep, I agree with you. Anyway, wonderful time.

I'm like, Kenny had a great time at Ashwegan.

Then I went to Fairberry and I

was no good, man. I just was laid over on the right rear. I needed a new setup and I just couldn't find it.

But Fairbury was wonderful.

Okay, we're going to talk about whether it was a good race or not a bad race because it's overwhelmingly not good. We're going to acknowledge that.

[Kenny Wallace]

But Kenny that start, this 24 year old kid, he gets a big push from Joey Logano. On the pole was Denny Hamlin.

[Herman Schrader]

Christopher Bell did not get hooked up with Denny Hamlin.

[Kenny Wallace]

So this race is whoever got out front.

[Herman Schrader]

But man, this kid, this 24 year old kid and Joey Logano they hooked

[Kenny Wallace]

up and that was it. Corey Hine was super loose. Tell me what you thought.

[Rusty Wallace]

Corey Heim won it out in California street course, right?

[Kenny Wallace]

Yep.

[Rusty Wallace]

Okay. And any wins here? How many races is he run now? Yeah, it's like hey boys, you better wake up because you got another guy getting ready to screw up your days next year. You know, I mean the kids done a phenomenal job. Is neat to see. Was, was, was surprised yesterday that when the, the second place car or the, the car that was behind any car that was behind another one couldn't, couldn't run up there and, and get on them, they couldn't. I don't know what, what really brought that. Now it'd be simple to say here that oh guess what, we need a different arrow package for Indianapolis. We need to maybe put the wicker bill. Remember when we had those on top of the roof and stuff. Hell, anybody could run up on anybody and, and catch. But Indianapolis has never been a track that made for good, good side by side racing. It don't have good side by side racing with the Indy cars. They're better because they have all the downforce. They're stuck to the ground. But you know, it's just not a track that's warrants good side by side racing. So to have a race that's not real exciting at Indy does not come as a big surprise.

[Deets Arnett]

Freighter, did you run, did you do that test up at Indian 92?

[Rusty Wallace]

No, no, I was getting something operate. Didn't get to go.

[Deets Arnett]

The reason, the reason I ask and I know why they did what they did at Indianapolis. But when they did that test in 92 they still had the apron. That was before they had the grass and the pit lane. Do you and I know why they did it again? When the Indy cars would go down on that flat, it made for a terrible angle going into the wall. But do you Think that that would have helped stock cars or wouldn't matter?

[Rusty Wallace]

Oh, that's. That's about my. That's above my. It's been so long since I've been there and made a lapse. So, yeah, I mean, anytime you've got more racetrack and it's wider and you could chop that corner, it probably help. But that track, you know, it's main deal. I mean, they have all kinds of events there all year long, but the big one is the Indianapolis 500 for the Indy cars. And that's what, you know, that's what they need to. Need to focus on.

Okay, so this is what it is.

I've always been impressed that you, Kenny

[Herman Schrader]

Schrader, you protect things that need to be protected, and then you say what needs to be said.

What I mean is that I know that your first love was open will

midgets, and I know that there's pictures out there of you going to Indy.

[Kenny Wallace]

You are. You race everything. So with that being said, I want

[Herman Schrader]

to thank you for saying what you said, because that's a hard thing to say.

[Kenny Wallace]

Now I'm going to.

I'm going to ruffle some feathers. But I mean, this nice also, I know it's controversial. So this racetrack is legendary. It is right there with Milwaukee, one of the oldest racetracks in America. It's heartfelt, it's indie. I get it. But it is not a good racetrack.

[Deets Arnett]

It is not for stock cars.

[Kenny Wallace]

Well, period.

[Deets Arnett]

I mean, Indy cars have had some pretty good races there in the last 15 years.

[Herman Schrader]

Okay.

[Rusty Wallace]

They've been running there for over 100.

[Kenny Wallace]

Right.

[Herman Schrader]

My point is this. And I want to drive this home. This is a historical racetrack. It is very hard to badmouth a historical love of the sport.

[Kenny Wallace]

And you're right.

[Herman Schrader]

The IndyCar races are incredible there.

[Kenny Wallace]

They got it figured out because they've

[Herman Schrader]

been running there 100 years. NASCAR has been running there only so long. We're not supposed to be there.

[Kenny Wallace]

So with me making that statement and Kenny, this is.

[Herman Schrader]

I'm going to give you your information because I love it that you started this. Jeff Glock, take us to poll. Only 23% of the people were entertained because whoever got out front, it was like this.

[Kenny Wallace]

It was the most insane thing I've

[Herman Schrader]

seen in racing in a long time.

[Kenny Wallace]

You looked at Ty Gibbs, he led the whole damn race. I mean, whoever came out of it, it was like a chess match.

[Herman Schrader]

It was like an Indy car race. Whoever was the strategist, you know, let's use Indy car names here. You have the. You have the crew chief, and you have the strategist. The strategist's job is to strategize you getting out first. At the very end of the race,

[Kenny Wallace]

whoever was leading was in good shape.

[Rusty Wallace]

That's way. That's way above me. That's. That's way above me. Now I'm gonna back up just a little bit. Indy's not. You know, Indy by no means is terrible racetrack. It's the most famous racetrack in the world. You know, in my mind, it is. But, you know, our cars haven't put on the type of show that our cars have typically put on at other places. So is it something we need to work on? I mean, when we first went there in 94 or 5, they didn't open the infield because they didn't want more people there than the Indianapolis 500, you know, and now something I did see yesterday, and I don't have any numbers, but in my mind, there's more people that have been there in the last couple years, which made me happy, but they didn't get to see what they wanted. As far as the pole.

[Deets Arnett]

Well, there. There's a few things, you know, until IndyCar reunified, I really and honestly think the Brickyard 400 was bigger than the Indy 500. I really do. I. I think from about 94 to 2007 or 8, basically, whenever that Goodyear debacle happened with the tire there, that's the first thing. The second thing is, is if you think about it, Pocono, New Hampshire, flat race tracks, Gateway, that. That cup cars run it. They don't. You don't typically go back and think about how great those races were. Stock cars are better on bank racetracks. And I think that this car in particular, for whatever reason, the arrow with it seems like it's worse than anywhere. And I think it's a combination of the car and the bigger tire. And I'm like, you. I'm like, if. If you run it, Andy, maybe. I mean, I really think they need to look at these workers and roof rails and things like that. And the last thing that I'll add, because we had this conversation last week, you know, has NASCAR's time at Indy pass and Schrader, you were exactly right. You said 70,000 people at that racetrack. It's going to look like it was empty. There were over three times as many people at Indianapolis yesterday than there was at North Wilkesboro. But North Wilkesboro was a huge success.

That's where we are, boys. And, you know, it's like I always

tell there, I saw Larry Mack at North Wilkesboro. I said, larry, I use some of your phrases.

[Kenny Wallace]

He goes, you do?

[Herman Schrader]

I said, yeah, we use that one.

[Kenny Wallace]

You said, well, we've done beat this like a horse. So that's what it was.

[Herman Schrader]

Everybody. It's a difficult situation.

[Rusty Wallace]

Not every baseball game is good. Not every football game is good. Not every movie is good. Not every basketball game is good. You know, this wasn't one of our more exciting ones now, but that's what

[Deets Arnett]

makes good races good, is the bad ones.

[Rusty Wallace]

Yeah, right. Yeah, it was pretty. It was there at the, the last 15 laps when Lugano is creeping up a 10th here, 10th year. And all of a sudden he's the same distance behind Denny, that Denny is behind the six, seven or bail. Yeah. Or behind Bell. That Bell is behind six, seven car. And it's like, oh, now you know, six, seven cars. Gotta be thinking six, seven, right? He's gotta be thinking, boy, let. Let Logano get up on Bell, take care of that. So I'm free. But it just. He got pretty good there at the end. But it was no side by side. It, it doesn't always happen.

[Deets Arnett]

And don't Forget that the 87 and the 92 Winston is kind of what ruined the all star race. Because NASCAR's tried to get that ever since. And no matter what they do, they can't make it happen. And it's, it's the same with the, with the points. You know, that 92 points battle at Atlanta and, and probably the closest we've had today. It was, I think it was 2010 or 11, whatever year Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards tied and, and Stuart got it by virtue of tiebreakers. You, when you try to manufacture something so hard and don't just let it happen naturally is probably not going to turn out as good as. As what you would hope for. So.

Isn't it amazing that last two weeks have been so unbelievable?

And then we find out there was some personality clashes with, with Gibbs and, and he'd never drive a Gibbs car and yada, yada, yada, whatever that was about. What I do agree with you about is, and I was thinking this exact same thing. You know, as much credit as we give Corey Hamm and I am going to give him a ton of credit but you know, in a world with all these new, this new generation, you got Booty Barker out there who had been with. With just underfunded teams throughout the years and never got a chance to shine. And if you think about it at Coronado and at Indianapolis, Pit strategy was as big as anything that Corey Haim did. So I'm like you, I think if, if I'm Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, I don't know. And, and I also wonder. I mean it may sound Trivial. But I think this 67 is his number. I mean, I, you know, he's, he's kind of taking it over from Buddy Arrington. It only took 40 years for somebody to get in 60 to get into 67 and do something with it.

And then years later we go to Atlanta and Jeff Burton misses the race.

And yeah, that's when the car count got so big that qualifying was everything. And then big sponsors were going home

Well, I pull a Joe Nemechek, I go strutting around the garage area making sure everybody sees me and I'm like, well, I'll make my one last stop here at Brother Rusty's in the Penske Hauler. You know, it's all chrome.

It's Roger Penske. I knock on the door and, oh, they, you know, they kind of slide the door up. Hey, Herman, I said, where's Rusty at?

[Kenny Wallace]

Oh, he's all. He's up here in the lounge.

[Herman Schrader]

I'm like, all right. So I got my Texco fire suit on. I go walking up there, and I

[Kenny Wallace]

look Rusty, and all I'm wanting is his acknowledgment.

Hey, Herm, you did good. You know I love you, brother.

Yeah, just thumbs up.

And I'm seeking this. I seek attention. I'm the youngest one.

I look at Rusty, he looks me right in the eye, and he looks

down to my shoes. He looks back up and he literally says, go make me a ham and cheese sandwich. I'm like, you son of a.

Yeah. I asked him. Beats. I said, what the hell did you say? He said. I looked right at him. He said I was so Madison. Mayonnaise or mustard?

And so I go down and I literally make Rusty a sandwich in my Texas Haviland par suit. You won't even give me my day.

And let's go back to the point. The point is, is, listen, my career is done.

I'm in a good spot, you know, in life right now. And I was only so good, but,

boy, they did give me a taste of the apple.

I mean, I drove some.

I was only good enough, but, boy, when I did get in those good cars, oh, man, it was so much. Give me running six, coming to pitch, and go out leading.

with my other teams, you know, you come in the pitch, run 20th, and go out 30th, it's like. But I don't.

I don't know, to the business part of it. But did you. Did you ever feel like you had a shot of getting into one?

I never got ahead of myself.

I mean, as a full time driver, no.

But I did think that they were going to put me in again the

next year because, listen, I love Steve Park.

You know, we share the same birthday, August 23rd. Obviously, he's younger. Me and Steve share that in common.

at bike Week still to this day, we really like each other.

But, you know, that was an interesting

But anyway, it never happened.

And then it went on to go really bad. And I don't take pleasure in saying that.

And then it ended. But anyway, yeah, Bowman getting back to the original story. Bowman and diet.

Did he say that I've always planned

on quitting in my mid-30s, didn't he? Yeah, he said that I was like, what the hell?

Yeah, I kind of find that hard to believe. I mean, I hate to say that, but I. I don't see you get in that 48 car when you're 27 or 28 years old. You're like, yeah, I think I'll get out of it when I'm 33.

Well, in my point, Kenny, and like, this is. I don't think Mr. H would put

him in the car if he was

mentally and physically unable. So they're putting him in the car all next year. So, I mean, if he was. I mean, let's say he is physically roughed up.

If that's perplexing to me that they're going another year.

They're not putting him in that car if they don't think that he can still perform, they would be somebody else in it.

[Deets Arnett]

Yeah. And when I say that, I just. I think for him, you know, they're just wearing. You get wear and tear on your body and stuff, and we didn't realize how much wear and tear Jeff Gordon was getting on his back there towards the end of his career and stuff like that. So I don't think he's at any form or fashion dangerous to be out there impaired or. Or anything like that. I just. I think, you know, once you've had some hard licks, you get to a point where you're like, I don't really know if I want to do this anymore.

I got fortunate that I got to see both of those boys start out running bandolero cars at. At the quarter mile at Concord. And I know I've told Travis this before when I've seen him, and I don't. I don't know any of them well, but I've got two sons, and I've told him, you have done such a good job of. Forget the driving. You and your wife have done such a good job of raising these boys. They are. They are good boys. And. And. And I. I think that goes a long way. I do think the thing that. That surprised me in all of that post race celebration with some of what Dale Jr. Said and with what Carson Copple said, is he's on the hot seat, and I think he's still on the hot seat. And I don't think that I realized. I don't know if anybody else did, but I didn't realize that until after that race on Saturday. And when you say you got to go out there and win races and you know, he said. Carson said, I don't know what I'm doing next year. So that's a big deal on a lot of levels.

I think this goes back to the something we talked about a week or two ago, that Ford has got an abundance of riches right now, but they've got to figure something out because Lane Riggs and Chandler Smith, you know, Todd Gillen signed a contract extension. Zane Smith runs great. Noah Gregson signed the contract extension. And then you don't have any Fords in the O'Reilly series, so they run the risk of losing some guys if they don't. If they don't get some things figured out to give them a place to go.

They were two nights at Port Royal that both paid big money. Hundred thousand dollars. Sunday night at Port Royal where Gio Selsie won his first high limits race. First win of the year and first win for Spire Motorsports in the sprint car. So they've been knocking on the door, been running good. You. You're up on the late mile deal. Because the late. The big late mile deal you were at.

I went to X 13 hours ago.

I haven't been up there in a number of years, but that. That Dave supermarket that you went to that everybody raves about where they carry your carrier groceries out your car for you, but they must sell alcohol, too, because I know everybody, it's a big party up there, but, man, it's just. It's a cool event.

And one last thing about the PDC in Fairbury, Illinois.

Golf cart galore. I mean, the golf carts take over the whole town. I mean, in and out, up and down the streets. There's so much to say.

in the B main. I finished third. I got in on a provisional. I had no. I was shocked.

from the summer nationals, and then the next one is highest and national points from the last year. Then a local in here. I finished fifth in what they call national points. And I got in, but I was no good. But I took the provisional because if

Big week for our little area for St. Louis Racing this weekend is we have something that doesn't happen very often anymore. We have a new racetrack opening, A state of the art new racetrack. Now, I must say it's new racetrack because it's Belclair Speedway. We call it Belleville, Bellclair. Different things. And it was there from 1948 or something until, I don't know, dozen years ago or 10 years ago or something. But they moved it on the fairgrounds. But they built a brand new one and it's going to open this Saturday.

Is that the same Belleville that had the big midget nationals?

[Rusty Wallace]

No, no, that's Belleville, Kansas.

However, I will give you credit because. And Kenny can speak to this way

You could run five or six nights a week. They told me it might even be been more than that because you could run like twice on Saturday. But they ran all over a little fairgrounds tracks and you know, Belclair was a fairgrounds track. But yes, it's big and I'm glad

you brought it up. I'll just add a little bit more. So they are going to celebrate the

opening of the track with open wheel midgets Micros and then our modifieds and then they, they got more aggressive.
