Herman Schrader on the Dirty Mo Media platform. And we are not in the Midwest and we are not in St. Louis, Missouri. The following is a production of Dirty Mo Media. I'm looking at Kenny Schrader right now.
Kenny Schrader
Did you drink on the show?
John Scottoni
I mean, yeah, you. How in the world did we agree to do a podcast?
Kenny Schrader
I like spending time with that makes me happy. Well, it's all about making you happy.
John Scottoni
We're always honest.
Kenny Schrader
We don't know that we're not in trouble already. And sometimes truthful. What makes you think you're not a little different? You're weird too.
John Scottoni
Herman Schrader. You're looking at him. Kenny Schrader. We are in Florida. How you doing?
Kenny Schrader
I'm doing fine and enjoying the weather down here. This last week was nice. Two weeks ago wasn't so nice down here. But it's better than being, you know, in the middle of a Marathon in St. Louis, Missouri.
John Scottoni
Yes, I'm, I'm kind of laughing because I'm a little giddy every year. You're a little giddy every year we come to Florida. It's either this or that. When was the last time that we turn on the local news and it shows 83 to 85 degrees every day for the next six days? This, this is a winning weekend for us.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, it's, it's, it's great week for us. And we hope it stays good for the festivities over at the big track the next week.
John Scottoni
Yeah. All right, well, let's get right to it. We took a week off because I went to Europe, but you go first. What have you been up to?
Kenny Schrader
Well, last weekend. Well, Glenn Styers drove our car at Ocala Speedway. Had a fifth one night. That was the highlight with three nights we raced. Had a fifth one night. The other two, we were just kind of. So. So then we came down here last weekend, catching right up to where you were with us. And because I didn't go to Europe or anything, I drove through Paducah. I drove Paducah and Lexington, but didn't go to Europe, but came down here and I got. I got sick for three or four days. I mean, sick enough that they didn't race two days, which that just doesn't happen. But that's because. Knowing that, I feel good today. And our Federated Auto Parts Dirt Car national points actually start tonight at Volusia County Speedway. So we'll be good for this week.
John Scottoni
So you are very popular, whether you want to admit it or not. And it did kind of go through the garage area, and I didn't know anything about it. And. And I didn't want to come to you because, you know, I don't like to poke the bear. What's wrong? What's wrong? So what kind. What, do you just had, like a cold or something? The whole garage here?
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
John Scottoni
Okay.
Kenny Schrader
I still went down in there and stuff.
John Scottoni
Oh, yeah, you did?
Kenny Schrader
I just didn't. Yeah, I was. Still went down in there and stuff. You know, if I'm sick, I'll make everybody else sick. But no, I just. Yeah, just cold, hot, shaky. Just, just. Yeah, I'm good now.
John Scottoni
I got it. Okay. So myself, I had this. I really wanted to go to Europe ever. Ever since I've been a kid. I. I lay in bed on Christmas eve, you know, December 24th, turn on. You know, watch the pope at St. Peter's Basilica. And I'm like, oh, my gosh, look at that. You know? And ever since I've been a kid, I. I've watched that. I'm like, one day I'm going to go there, and then I. I've heard all these stories about ancient Rome, so I had to do it. And my buddy John Scottoni, he said, I will play as, you know, your escort, because his family's from Sicily and John had been over there 10 years ago. So we went to Rome and we. We had the time of our life in Order. I would say my favorite thing about my trip to Europe was number one Vatican and Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel where Michelangelo painted 500 years ago. And then go around the corner, leave the Vatican, go to St. Peter Basilica, just, you know, 500 year old church, then that Coliseum. Kenny. Oh my gosh, just unreal.
Kenny Schrader
I gotta. I got a Coliseum story when you're done. Go ahead, I'm listening. I like listen. I like listening.
John Scottoni
Okay, well, but you. You walk out of the Coliseum and you go to the Rome Forum, you know, it's like what it was their Washington D.C. back in the Roman Empire. And in the Roman Empire they were. They were all horrible gangsters. They. They took over all of Europe, you know, But. But anyway, there's so much to say, but they built things so strong, just made of stone. It's just. It's simply just standing still and there's nothing wrong with it. So then we went on to. We got on one of those bullet trains and oh man, that thing rode how fast? You know, I wish that would ask, but boy, things were going by really fast.
Kenny Schrader
Well, you wouldn't want to hit.
John Scottoni
No.
Kenny Schrader
You wouldn't want to hit, no.
John Scottoni
Yep. I looked at John, I said, you know, man, them trees are going by really fast. But we got to Modena and we went to Ferrari and wow. You know, and then the next day we went to Lamborghini. Then we went up on to Berlin and, you know, went to Germany. And I must say, I gotta be honest, you know, you. You still felt the Hitler days there. And right now, Berlin, Germany, they. They admit to the Holocaust. They got all that. It's just brutal, but I mean, they got it all right downtown Berlin, you know, and. And my friends didn't tell me the truth, Kenny, because I asked them, I said, when you go to Germany, when you go to Berlin, do you feel it? And they said, oh, no. Well, now they do. So going to Berlin was very somber. But there's so much more to say. And that's for another. Another time, but go to Europe. Go to Berlin. And of course, the highlight, we rented a Mercedes Benz in Frankfurt and we went to Berlin and we aired that baby out. And one more thing.
Kenny Schrader
How fast?
John Scottoni
158 in a Mercedes AMG 43 or something like that. We. We flew north on purpose. We went to Frankfurt on purpose. You know, we went to Venice too. I forgot to tell you that. So we go to Frankfurt, we. We rent this Mercedes and we spent a little too much money, right? At 800. $800 for two, three days. And 99.9% of the people drive just like we do in America. But, Kenny, they stay out of the left lane. They don't start battling each other like we do here. You know, you don't got people staying in the left lane just to upset you. They stay out of the left lane. And the trucks are in the right lane. And the Mercedes Benz, the BMWs, the Audis, we were in the left lane. I mean, getting it done. So GPS would say, okay, from Frankfurt to Berlin, let's just say five and a half hours. We got there in three and a half.
Kenny Schrader
Are there any US Cars over there?
John Scottoni
I only saw one, and it was a Ford. And, you know, Kenny, it's a great question, because the.
Kenny Schrader
The odds they would be foreign cars.
John Scottoni
Oh, yeah, true. And if. When we see a foreign car in America, we're like, oh, look, somebody's driving a Mercedes Benz, Those Audi station wagons, you know, they're not like station wagons. Back in our day, they're kind of the short. Them Audis, they. They were going faster than me. But the autobahn is a little exaggerated because, you know, like I said, 99.9%, everybody's just rolling along, but it's that left lane that they leave open, and if they see you coming, they don't play a game with you. They get out of the way. And that was nice. So.
Kenny Schrader
So the closing rate, you'd have to be a little careful.
John Scottoni
Yeah. What he's referring to, everybody is I told him yesterday, I. We're running, like, 158 mile an hour. And I'm like, okay, I'm gonna start warming up right now. And, whoa. You know, because somebody's running 125, you're running 158. And it's like, okay, we're done doing that.
Kenny Schrader
It's like in our pit road, 110%.
John Scottoni
Right.
Kenny Schrader
So my wife was at the Coliseum a number of years ago, and she called me up because I don't. I don't leave the country unless. Go to Canada to race. Canada is like being at home.
John Scottoni
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And I'm not. No plans to leave the country. It would take. Oh, you don't know. It would take a lot. But she called me up from the Coliseum. She said, I can't believe you didn't come over here with us. They used to race here. And I said, well, oh, yeah, the chariots and stuff, which was a little. That was right before me.
John Scottoni
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And. And I told her. I said, well, it must not have been that big. A deal. Because I'm at Paducah, Kentucky, and they're still racing here. We're racing here tonight. They're not racing over there anymore, so just an old racetrack.
John Scottoni
Well, you know, I, I, you and Kim, you and my wife are the same. Kim won't go. She's afraid of terrorism and she stays her lane just like you do. But when I came back, I looked at Kim, I said, are you ready to go back to Europe with me? She stared at me and I said, okay. You're not saying no. So we're working on it. But yeah, Europe was absolutely incredible and the food was great. One last thing before we move on. Kenny is in Italy. You know, they don't do butter. You know, we do butter and it tends to clog your arteries up. And I found it really cool that, you know, olive oil, they, they just, they replace butter with olive oil over there and, and olive oil is really good. But, you know, we just, we're not, we just don't do it over here. So you'd go, and you, they'd say, do you want an appetizer? And I say, oh, some bruschetta? Well, some places just give you toasted bread and you dip it in that olive oil and oh my God, it was like ice cream. Your bill, ladies. I got it. No, you don't. Yes, I did.

We already 12 minutes into Herman Schrader and it's time. Kenny. I'll let, I'll just set it up. I'll tee it up. For the first time in a long time, NASCAR said we're going to start the year off at the legendary Bowman Gray.
Kenny Schrader
The long time was since 1971 that they were at Bowman Gray 71.
John Scottoni
That's a long time ago. Let's discuss back and forth because there is so much to talk about. I mean, and what I mean by that is. And I'll just kind of do a couple things 17,000 people. Felt like there was a hundred thousand people there. They, they do the Bobby Allison Memorial Trophy and man, it just seems this, like this was the best start for NASCAR in a long time. Chase Elliott, our most popular driver, wins. Give me some of your thoughts.
Kenny Schrader
People quit going to the Bud when it was the bud sheet up. So this, it was the cookout, clash. Yeah, crash, whatever.
John Scottoni
That's funny.
Kenny Schrader
Okay. People quit going to Daytona. You know, they quit going for the shootout. So they did something and taking it out to LA was, was neat and it had, I don't know, I don't know the numbers of people, you know, but when you looked at course a huge facility compared to Bowman Gray, but you know, you take a quarter mile dirt and you pack it with 3,000 people.
John Scottoni
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And there's a whole lot more enthusiasm than there is than if you go to Rockingham and you have or any, I'm not just picking around and go to any place and you only have 15,000 people there. You know, it's just more enthusiasm when you put all the people in that circle. I expected the race to be more like the last chance qualifier was, which, you know, just, it was just rough. I mean, you got to get in the thing. I thought it was neat. It was well received. It was in the birthplace in NASCAR in that area. You know, it was back in the, in the Southeast. It was at one of their bull rings, you know, I mean, I only place I could think of really be cool would be hickory or something. But I thought, I thought it was a big deal as far as the teens. I'm going to unload this car. 23 out of the 39 of us are going to make it, so 16 aren't even going to make it. No matter who you are, you know, you can be one of the heroes. There was one provisional for the highest point car from 20, 24 that didn't make it, which was Blaney, who runs second from 23rd with a pretty clean car. So tell me what you could do on that racetrack. They obviously could somewhat race. So I, I thought it was a win win. I, I, it was entertaining. I like everything about, I really like the enthusiasm.
John Scottoni
Let me ask you a question that I, you know, of course we don't have a show unless we go against the grain. Sometimes you, you have, you have a small amount of people that are really nobody, they're negative, but they called it a gimmick. And I'm like, hold on, a gimmick is when you, how is this a gimmick? Because they race there every weekend. This is a real racetrack where they race every weekend. I don't think it was a gimmick, do you?
Kenny Schrader
When they started the Bud Shootout in that. Check me here. I say 79 or 80. I think 79, maybe when they started budget, it was a gimmick.
John Scottoni
Yeah, the.
Kenny Schrader
The All Star race was a gimmick. I mean, it was just, hey, let's. Let's create something for these guys and we'll have a special race. It's a gimmick, you know, I mean, no, no problem, but it's a race. It was a damn good race.
John Scottoni
Yeah. And I think that people use words a little too loosely, you know, right next to the word gimmick. Could be called promoting. Could could be called making the sport better. You know, everybody's looking to do something to promote their sport, so. Okay, we agree on that. I don't think it was a gimmick either, and here's why. Because they raced. You don't demean the modifieds. They're badass cars, power, big tires. So, you know, even on Saturday, the modified, it was a hell of a crowd. You know, wasn't sold out, but it was. Looked like, you know, 13, 15,000 people. So I thought that the crowd loved it, that NASCAR came to their track.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. And still had their class, their premier class as part of it for the weekend. And then had two. Two of their heroes in the race, which was neat.
John Scottoni
Yeah. Before we get to the race, let's, as old Larry McReynold say, let's talk about the elephant in the room. So the race now, we're going to go through the race, but, you know, just quickly here now, everybody, when I say, you know, if somebody's gonna say, who's everybody? Well, some of the drivers are saying, everybody, this should move around. Maybe we. Maybe we've caught on to something. Maybe we. We kind of like the SRX series maybe where the weather is good. Maybe the Clash spotlights local short tracks. Now they're saying, let's go to Hickory next year. Kenny, is that. Is that even possible with, you know, having to have soft walls and infrastructure? What's your thoughts on going to Hickory now, next year?
Kenny Schrader
Well, I don't understand the whole soft wall deal, too. I mean, you know, we only ran trucks in Eldora. We didn't have softballs. So.
John Scottoni
Good point.
Kenny Schrader
Safer barriers. So I don't know. You know, you can obviously take them wherever you NASCAR deems they want to go. NASCAR did you know they also took off over promotion of Bowman Gray, now full time. They made a huge investment to the, to the facility and it really showed. I mean, it, it looked great, but you could move it around. Now the other problem, I got here the first weekend of February, right? You can only take this thing so many places in the country, you know, and it was great yesterday. Everybody was in their jackets and their hats on and stocking caps or whatever. But it was in the mid-40s during the race. Good enough for everybody to come out, but you can still only make it. You can only do it so many places in, in mid or first week February. I liked it for the teens that, okay, we're going to a little track. These cars are expensive. We're all going, we're going to get our bodies tore up. But that, that's a given. But we didn't have to go to California to do it.
John Scottoni
Yeah, let's go all the way across.
Kenny Schrader
We can, we can do it right here.
John Scottoni
Oh, you're right. And you know, everybody needs to show up because they show those qualifiers, they show those last chance races on the big tv, the Big Bird, and you travel all the way across the United States to not make the race. And I like what you said.
Kenny Schrader
So now they just, it's a tough business sometimes you go cross country and you don't make a race. That's just the way it is.
John Scottoni
But, but I agree with you. Let's go one hour up the road to not make the race. And yeah, for that reason, I think that's.
Kenny Schrader
Hey, well, but it's so much different now with the, with the charters, because, you know, that race being different, the charters didn't guarantee him. But now, I mean, guys go to California or wherever or Phoenix and they were going to be in a race. You know, we're, we're, we're in the race. When we used to get 65, 70 plus cars show up at Daytona, that was, that was, that was, you know, that was tough to get in that race. It's not like that anymore.
John Scottoni
There is talk could we ever make Bowman Gray a points race? So let me just set this scenario up and, and because I've thought about it, you come in on a Friday, you qualify Saturday. Okay? Now we have 40. There's, there's 40 charters, but we can only.
Kenny Schrader
36. 36, right.
John Scottoni
Thank you for straightening me out.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, well, that's my job. Remember?
John Scottoni
36 charters and then there's four spots to qualify makes it 40. So. But when we go to Bowman Gray, you can only start 24 cars if we were ever to go to these short tracks like this.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, wait a minute. Why do we have the charter system then?
John Scottoni
Great point. Okay, but I'm going to draw this.
Kenny Schrader
That won't work.
John Scottoni
I'm going to draw this scenario. First of all. You're right. I forgot about that part.
Kenny Schrader
And if Lewis Hamilton wants to come to Bowman Gray, it could be 41 cars.
John Scottoni
As of right now, you and I are 3/4 away through this debate, and it appears there's no way we can hold a points race because we have 36 charters. We can only start 24 cars, plus or minus. What are. Plus? A little more, maybe. But here's my scenario. And once again, this is why people sit down and say, can this be done? You bring the cars in, you qualify, you split them up. You know, 20 cars in this qualifier, 20 cars in that qualifier or whatever it is. And then if you don't make the race, let's say you're the 25th car, then you just got 25th in the points and then 26 in the points. Is that viable? Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
We're really searching for something here. Why would you go to Bowman Gray for a points race? I don't see it. I don't see. We got plenty of places to go. We don't need to go to Bowman Gray for a points race. I think what they did was great. Now we're going to take this a little farther, though. Let's go back to the records. Let's go back to the last race there in 71 and see how many cars they started when they were big. Big old cars.
John Scottoni
Yeah, Honkers.
Kenny Schrader
See how many they started right then.
John Scottoni
Yeah. Okay, everybody. What we did is we just pressed the Hot topics. When I see you all out there, you're talking about making a points race and run. That was one deal. Making a point race. And the other one was take it to Hickory. So Kenny Schrader and myself, we just talked about it all for you. And. And that's that. All right. And that was first and foremost.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, I think it was great. I think. I think. I think it couldn't have went any better. I don't think they hoped for any better. I don't know how you could have. I think it met all its expectations.
John Scottoni

John Scottoni
Let's talk about the race. The first thing I got to say was the look, you know, at the start, you and I, you were in your motorhome, I was here. But that look of them interviewing Denny Hamlin on the hill, on the grass, you know, it just, it just felt so right. You know, they're interviewing the drivers in the woods are right next to him. The start of this event on, you know, national tv, like the biggest form of TV there is. Kenny, didn't it look good to you?
Kenny Schrader
Oh, I, I liked everything about it. It was like, well, it's like, you know, it's like old school, but the highest form of stock car racing in the world of stock car racing at doing it old school. And it was great. And our, you know, we got some, we got some damn good drivers and teams and they sure didn't embarrass themselves by, by running over each other continuously. Yes, there's yellows, there's going to be yellows. We're on a flat quarter mile running around a high school football field.
John Scottoni
Let me. Whatever you, you race Saugus, you won it. Saugus. You won a NASCAR truck race at Saugus. How was Saugus? It's not there anymore. But how did it compare, you think, looking at Bowman Gray?
Kenny Schrader
Well, Saugus, I didn't do it, but they told me if you poured a gallon of motor down at the inside of the track and a turn it ran to the wall.
John Scottoni
Oh my God.
Kenny Schrader
It was, I don't remember. But we got put to the back at Saugus early in the race for turning someone around on purpose and we were still able to win. So, I mean, you can, you can get through with that place. I, I thought everything about Bowman Gray was, was great. And you know, then Kennedy, he took them to the Coliseum. You know, they spent whatever building a track. They, they, they showed they can race out there. They. They put on a show at Hickory. They put on a show on the road courses. They put on a show at Bristol on the dirt. These guys, they're good. They can put on a show. Whatever surface that. Whatever surface you put in front of them, they're not going to make everybody happy. But, you know, we're just. No. No sports going to do that anymore.
John Scottoni
You know, I wanna. I want to say this, and then I want to comment on something you said. First of all, I really liked it when the last chance qualifier was going. And Fox goes to Denny Hamlin. You can see it's cold. He's got the beanie on. He's on the side of a hill. And, you know, they're making an effort to interview him, and they're like, denny, what are you watching? And Denny's like, I'm looking to see what we can do when our race comes. I just wanted to make that comment, but okay, that's that. Kenny, sometimes the local short track racers get a little jealous, and they'll make statements like, well, bring them NASCAR drivers to our track. You know, but me and you have talked about this before. When you and I sat on top of your truck at Eldora and you watch Matt Kenseth or Denny Hamlin. I mean, Kenny, these guys are really good. I mean, they're good, period.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. But, you know, and we've. We've beat this in the ground. There's. There's good race car drivers all over the country. Right? All over the country. But these. These guys are up there because they're doing what they're doing every weekend. And the fact that they got there.
John Scottoni
Yeah, yeah. And we'll put this to bed by saying this. Erik Jones, you know, Brad Keselowski, all these drivers, they ran your short tracks, they ran Berlin. That's. That's where they grew up. So it's not like they got dropped into nascar and everybody should be jealous of them. My driver Berlin's better than Erik Jones. Hold on. Erik Jones goes back there once a year and kicks their butt. So I think every once in a while, we just need to ease up on being upset that, you know, my driver's not in nascar and I just wanted to. I like it when you kind of brought that up to the. These. These guys are pretty good. You put them anywhere, and they're gonna put on a good show. All right, let's get to the race. Blaney, I know how much you like Blaney. Starts dead last, or whatever it is, Takes the provisional talk About Blaney for a minute.
Kenny Schrader
Well, 23rd to second.
John Scottoni
Wow.
Kenny Schrader
With. With all the fenders on all of.
John Scottoni
Them, hardly a donut mark. They went around the car after the race.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. So, I mean, it could be done. You know, I don't know how many cars were clean. I mean, you know, relatively clean. But there. There definitely were some. The last chance race got ugly, but the. The. The main event, the actual clash did not get ugly.
John Scottoni
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And they were side by side passes, which, you know, it's just hard. It just. You have to be cooperating with each other and be pretty respectful of each other to make a pass up there.
John Scottoni
And that is no different than you and I going to a bull ring in Illinois. You come off the corner, you can't, you know, if you're. And I'm just saying what you taught me, which we all know. I'm just stating it to make a point. When you run any short track in. In America or the world, if you're in the middle of Illinois and you're running the bottom of the racetrack, you can't go out to the wall because there's somebody on your outside. So in racing, you have to cooperate. Right?
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
John Scottoni
Just quickly, I was. I was trying to get to this outside of this guy at Fairberry. Well, he kept coming across the track, and I just kept lifting him in the ass. And I'm in a super late model and Joey Walsh and Kenny are taking care of it. And. And Kenny was watching me do this, and the race is over, and Kenny teaches me a lesson. He's very disappointed in me. And he looks at me and he goes, you idiot. You just kept hitting that guy. And yeah, I'm like, I just drove really bad. And so I fixed the car myself at Peoria the next night, but said.
Kenny Schrader
You'Re gonna have to fix it.
John Scottoni
Yeah, you did. So that is short track racing. If somebody runs the. So what we're talking about. Let's go to that moment in the race. About lap 95, Denny Hamlin jumps to the outside of Chase. Elliot Chase. Yeah. And he's working him, but he. But he did pass Tyler Reddick on the outside. Okay, so Denny Hamlin does pass Tyler Reddick on the outside, gets to Chase, starts working him on the outside. So that was a pretty exciting time. That doesn't happen very much. Tell me about your thoughts when Denny's.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, everybody's talking about forward drive, you know, trying to eliminate wheel spin on the X of the turn and when Danny gets up there. And first off, when Danny gets you know, 8 inches up there on his right rear. Gets 8 inches up there and Chase doesn't run him out of room. Chase gives him that, that 8 inches. Instead of, you know, turning himself into the wall by getting right rear, Chase gives that eight inches. Well, then Chase is a car with lower coming off the turn, which, you know, hurts his car more as far as forward drive. So it was just, it was just good racing. It was good race. And it was good that the, that the tires gave up, you know, as much as they did. I don't know. I think they talked around the best part of a second or so. They slowed down. I don't know how you could expect to take these big old heavy cars.
John Scottoni
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And put on a better show than they did there.
John Scottoni
Yeah. So. So let's move on. Changing subjects. But yet in the same area, NASCAR is looking to make the sport better. Looking to bring the young people in. And Chase Elliott, he runs good. And one thing that surprised me, Kenny, was that Chase ran much better than all his teammates. You know, I, I kind of feel like Kyle used up his equipment in the last Chance. But, but, you know, as far as unloading off the trailer, Chase was head and heels above, you know, William Byron, Alex Bowman, Kyle Larson. You know, just talk about that for a minute. How, how does Chase's set up? You know, how is it so much better than the other three? Now we, we know that Kyle eventually got there, but he, his, his stuff was burned up by the time he made the race.
Kenny Schrader
I, I've got no idea which. The other three don't have an idea either. You know, otherwise they would have had their stuff, you know, as. Just as fast. But, you know, we're talking minute changes, you know, my new changes. But you know, Chase was definitely the, the class of Hendrick Motorsports yesterday.
John Scottoni
Yeah. Okay, we're gonna get to dirt racing, so let's, let's wrap this up. Did NASCAR get lucky as we're trying to drive the sport forward? You know, listen, we know that it's still, in a weird way, you know, Dale Earnhardt junior's number eight late model stock souvenir trailer was there. Bill Elliott is still around. So at Bowman Gray, we, we got Dale Earnhardt senior son. His souvenir trailer's there. You got Bill Elliott's son wins the race. Is this, this was the perfect storm. I mean, the old track and Billet's boy wins the race. And he's got the biggest fan base. 7 time most popular driver. Was that a bonus? Kenny, my question to you Was that what I just. What I just said to you? Was that a bonus for nascar?
Kenny Schrader
You know, those guys are part of the sport. They're going to be there. Bill. It's going to be around until he's just not with us anymore. Juniors deep in our. In our sport still. They're going to be around. Dale. Seniors, memories don't be with everybody for, you know, until they're not with us. But I didn't say it didn't hurt anything, but didn't affect the. If someone else would have won the race, it still came. Came off good.
John Scottoni
Thank you. Because that's kind of where I was going. I just really think Chase Elliott winning was a big bonus.
Kenny Schrader
My daddy always told me, you know, everybody out there in those cars and, you know, I was out there long enough. We're all just clowns, you know, you're just a clown. And one clown doesn't stop any circus I love. So, I mean, we got. We got more popular clowns than others, but we're all just clowns and they come and go. I mean, they just have, you know, there was no. No, they were, you know, the King, Kaylee Arboro, Buddy Baker. I mean, them guys, our sport carried on and got bigger.
John Scottoni
Man, that is. That is another conversation. When I went to see AJ Ford at Indy and. And I know that you're much closer to aj, but it shocked me because AJ Foyt looked me right in the eye, and I think for a minute he remembered me being a tire changer in the NASCAR or the USAC days. But AJ looked at me and he said, everybody's gone. Parnelli Jones is gone. And then he. I don't like this new engineering stuff. And, you know, AJ's 90 years old now, but. But you're right.
Kenny Schrader
Well, there's people that guarantee. There's people that didn't like when they started putting air in tires instead of solid rubber either. Stuff.
John Scottoni
Stuff where they get this damn air.
Kenny Schrader
You could poke a hole in that, you know, I mean, stuff just changes. We. And there's nothing we can do about it.

Okay, I, I, you know, our jokes are gaining ground, so we are going to talk about dirt racing next, but let's do jokes.
Kenny Schrader
I, I had one of. One of our friends call in.
John Scottoni
Okay.
Kenny Schrader
Text me.
John Scottoni
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
Mark. Mark Heinrich from St. Louis.
John Scottoni
Darn. Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
Yes.
John Scottoni
Okay.
Kenny Schrader
And it's, you know, it's on the. It's on the silly side, but the difference between a hippo and a Zippo.
John Scottoni
Wow. What is the difference between a hippo and a Zippo?
Kenny Schrader
One's really, really heavy, and the other one's a little lighter.
John Scottoni
That's right.
Kenny Schrader
That's good. I mean, that's it.
John Scottoni
The best jokes are so simple. Okay.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
John Scottoni
And we said at the last show, but, you know, because I think we talked so badly that our jokes were bad. It's funny. All right, so Charlie Marlo just sent these in, and we got three. All right, here we go. Here's. Here's first joke. I was in a bar the other day when a girl asked me, what do you do? I responded, I race cars screeching with excitement. She shot back, do you win many races? I sighed. No, the cars are much faster. What does that mean? But that. Okay, all right, so second one, my little cousin was showing off that he sleeps in a race car bed. Jokes on him. I sleep in a real race car, man. That's really lame. Okay, last one here. What's the difference between praying in church and at the track? This is bad at the track. You really mean it? I must say, I must say, I do pray before every race. Dear Lord, give me wisdom and give me speed, you know? Okay, Kenny, the jokes are, Are getting better. All right, so I'm gonna set you up. We're going dirt racing, everybody. And boy, have we had a lot of it. And just as topic, you know, we got past the Chili bowl. We. We did the Chili bowl, but now we're on to, you know, down here in Florida. We went to Ocala and then at the same time, we had all Tech and we had Volusia. I wanted to let everybody know. We recognize that. Let's just kind of go in order here. Kenny, over there at Ocala, you were there. Jason, I believe Garver won one of the A mains and. And Kyle Larson, or not Kyle Larson. Kyle Strickler, sorry, won another one that. That track. Let's just give Bubba a shout out every. You know, people do. Listen, tell me about Ocala and Cal Strickler won a race. Garver won a race. I don't know the other one. Can you help me?
Kenny Schrader
I don't remember. I don't remember who won. We run 5th, 13th and 16th with Glenn, so I don't remember who won. But it's very challenging.
John Scottoni
It's a tough track.
Kenny Schrader
It's very uniquely shaped. They had a lot of rain always. The track still was not rough. Bubba had it. Bubba had it good, but it was wet. I mean, wet, wet, wet. So it was challenging. Lucas Oil is over there this week, so that'll be. That'll be exciting, you know, and the races we. We talk about is just kind of the ones we're around a little bit. But there's still so many other races going on, even in the Southeast. It's. You just can't even keep up on all of them.
John Scottoni
Let's. Before we go to Volusia, where you and I were, let's go to Altech, as they call him. Rtj. Ricky Thorton, he got by Devin Moran in a hell of a race there the first night. And RTJ one.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, Moran had a flat right the first.
John Scottoni
Oh, that. That's right. You're right. You're right. He.
Kenny Schrader
He was.
John Scottoni
Moran was going to win the first.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. Man had a flat and.
John Scottoni
And so RTJ wins the first night. Boy, I tell you what, they really run that high side and turn one, don't they? And they're. They're paying the price here. Lately, though, they're climbing the wall. They're flipping.
Kenny Schrader
I have not been to that track, but usually it's. Traditionally, every time I've seen it on. On TV or anything, it's slick from the top to the bottom. I don't know how much rain they had or what, but it had. It had a lot of character, we would say. But the Lucas Oil Guys put on a fantastic show, whether they were bouncing through the holes or bouncing over the infield tires or bouncing off the outside wall. And at one time, with just a handful of laps to go in the Saturday night finale, there was like four of them and you could have put a blanket over them. They were all right there contending for the wince. Davenport wound up second to Moran Saturday night. And that's not Davenport's main deal is those rough racetracks. But. But he can do it no problem. But, you know, and it was great race.
John Scottoni
So we all love Brian Shirley. His nickname is Squirrel. I love him. Is it time to load up right now and just head back home? We've burned a car down.
Kenny Schrader
It's fixed.
John Scottoni
It's fixed. It got into one, got into slime with another car, knocked the rear clip off of it. What do you do, Kenny, when you're Brian Shirley and you're down here and man, things just aren't. I mean, it's been a rough speed week so far. Do you keep digging?
Kenny Schrader
Are you running for points all year? You keep digging. You keep digging. If you're going to pick and choose your races and you're not going to run with either the world of outlaws or Lucas Oil, then you can, you can load up and go home. If you're coming to Florida and you're now and you're just going to run everything, Petrov always said we don't have to spend half of our budget in February. You know, we've got true. We got all year to spend this money. So Florida is not really where you come to save money. Save money. It's pretty rough.
John Scottoni
I know that people like to listen to, you know, our realism. So when. When I came down and I used to go to East Bay, Ocala, North Florida Speedway and Volusia and 2012, I'll never forget it. We ran 14 nights and never got rained out and, you know, prorate, you know, gas, hotel rooms, crew members, pit passes. I mean, for Ahmad, you come down here in a modified. A little modified, you're gonna, you know, you're gonna be all in 20 grand. And that is nothing. These guys. And I'm already saying what you already know, so feel free to. I'm just. I'm going with you on this. I mean, these guys, when they come to speed weeks, they're. They're buying 50 tires. 50.
Kenny Schrader
That's.
John Scottoni
That's.
Kenny Schrader
That's what we. That's what we bought before we came down. Yeah.
John Scottoni
Yeah, you're right. Brian Shirley. Just keep racing. Schrader And I just deb it.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, just keep going, man. You gotta. Man, you gotta make that money back.
John Scottoni
Yeah. You need more time. You need more cars, more.
Kenny Schrader
You tore up a couple cars. You gotta win some more money. You gotta race.
John Scottoni
Yeah. Okay, so let's kind of end all tech here. So Thornton wins the first race because Moran has the right rear flat. Then. Then Ricky does win the second race. In between all of this, there's a lot of drama with turn one and two, because, you know, I'm just saying what I see, and people talking about they. They didn't get the slime worked in. A lot of people climbed that wall. There was some flipping. Brandon Shepard flipped his. His rocket, like, pretty big.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
John Scottoni
So we, we. It was a show. It was a show. And then Moran comes back the last night and wins. Anything else I'm missing from all tech, Kenny?
Kenny Schrader
No. You know, I turned one of the modifieds over a couple years ago in Wisconsin because I got up in the slime and it looked. It looked good, but it wasn't. So you know whose fault that was? That was mine for thinking it looked good.
John Scottoni
And, boy, you know, I did it in Virginia when we had that rain, remember that rain? And they're like, test the track. And I said, oh, it's good. And then I went to enter a little higher.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
John Scottoni
Back. Yeah, it's another story. Okay, Kenny, before we come to Volusia, I do want to give a shout out. I, I, it. I obviously caught myself the Sunshine Nationals at Volusia. That's when the Snow was just 100 miles north of, you know, Daytona here. The Sunshine Nationals. It did run, what, two, three nights here. And yeah, it was good racing. I, I thought Davenport ran better than normal. Nick Hoffman had a hell of a deal going, but, you know, Nick, Nick blamed himself on, you know, grind. Gustin won the first night, and, and Nick Hoffman showed up really fast. Nick got on the inside of Gustin, spun it out, and just said, I just, you know, I got in there and I got myself in a bad spot. But, boy, Volusia. Just go back to the Sunshine Nationals at Volusia. Boy, this track is. It is different that the cars are more aerodynamic. It's so fast. Give me your thought on the Sunshine Nationals and how fast those late models are.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, they're. The late models are, Are fast everywhere. Now, whether the track's smooth or rough, you know, they just bounce higher and farther when they hit the holes. But Volusia has been extremely smooth. Had a little bit. Had a little. They had weather them too. They had A couple little places but little Mike Van Gendron has been taking care of the track down here and it is smooth now it's be a little challenging to get a hold of but that's, that's. That's great. It's been smooth and wide so they're just going so fast and the cars are sealed up to the ground. They're so arrow dependent. But that's every, that's every car. I mean every classic horror is more and more like that than they used to be.
John Scottoni
That is a good point right there Kenny. Even old hobby stocks just. That's life isn't it? I mean everything's just getting faster because people are smart and four cylinders are hauling butt. Now that is just the way it is, isn't it?
Kenny Schrader
Just the way it is. Everybody get. Everything gets faster.
John Scottoni
Let's come to current time right now. You know, you and I just got done racing this Cole Falloway in the modifieds. He. Boy he's been dominating. He's class of the field. And then Kurt Spalding won one of the other nights so we.
Kenny Schrader
Two nights.
John Scottoni
He won the first night and Cole Falloway won that two nights.
Kenny Schrader
Okay.
John Scottoni
And then we have these 360. What do you call it?
Kenny Schrader
ASOC 360 Wing Sprint cars and get some good, good cars here. And they. It's hard to believe watching them. Spent some time with Lesoski while I've been down here and he said it'd be over a second difference between the 360s and the 410s. And I'm watching the 360s run around there and thinking Glad I'm not going around that friggin place that fast and thinking about having to go over a second faster. They've been putting on a show but the 26 car pack he's. He was you know friends with Brian Brown and he runs third one night from up by Kansas City. He ran third one night. Ran second last night. And I told him after race you were definitely the best car in, in your class. But nobody, nobody is in the Justin Peck's class. Not this weekend.
John Scottoni
Yeah. And for, for people that you know there's a lot of lingo in our sport. 360 Kenny. That's 360 cubic inch motor, right?
Kenny Schrader
Yeah. Versus 410.
John Scottoni
Yeah. So you just going to go a little fat. So let me ask you that. Teach me this. It is, I mean you know from 360 cubic inch to 410. I guess there's a big money difference. What Is that.
Kenny Schrader
I can definitely for sure not answer that. Yeah, I guarantee the 410 cost you a little bit more, but you know, a lot of the same parts and stuff. But you're beating on that 410 engine a little bit more because making more horsepower with a lot of the same parts and you'll. You'll put less laps on it before it has to be rebuilt. So there's where more money comes in.
John Scottoni
Right. Wow. Well, I, I'm always amazed when I listen to those guys and they go the360 like they some little old bitty car and they. The three 60s still pulling in with tractor trailers.
Kenny Schrader
And last same teams, I mean some of the same teams are putting in 4 tens for this week. You know, the same same team, they're just going up in the trailer and pulling out.410 putting in them. You see my buddy Glenn's car?
John Scottoni
Yes. He. He got in a bad situation and flipped and gave a good interview.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
John Scottoni
Tell me about, tell. Let's talk about Glenn for a minute. What's this man all about? Where's he from?
Kenny Schrader
He's from Ashwickin, Ontario and I've met him years ago. Great guy. He drives for us maybe a dozen times a year and just loves the race. Runs everything he can. He's down here with her modified. And he was 360 made show first night and the second or the third night, Emma. Another car got together going down the front straight away. Broke a steering, got in the inside wall, hit a ton, turned over a couple times. Pretty good. Car was upside down. They got him right side up and I got him out and he, he come right out, looked great, no problem. And the interview said, yeah, it wasn't near as hard as I thought it was going to be.
John Scottoni
That's what I.
Kenny Schrader
And that's what I remember. Yeah, it wasn't bad at all. Glenn, look, look at that car. And he looked at. Oh my gosh. You know. But they build their own cars. Glenn Styles racing and they build and manufacture and sell cars and they're keeping that one for the display room because the integrity of it. I mean. Yeah, it, it built and some pieces broke off the front like. Like is going to happen. But it held up. I mean he got right out and he's not a spring chicken.
John Scottoni
Yeah, I was impressed with that because I never really got a good look at him. Now Glenn also owns the Oshwegan Speedway. Is that right?
Kenny Schrader
Yes. Yeah, we go up there a couple times. A beautiful place, beautiful track. It's where it's over the border. If we go in in Detroit, it's maybe two hours and Tony Stewart won his first world outlaw race there.
John Scottoni
Let's. Let's end like this. Kenny, do you think nowadays in the NASCAR cup series, do you think we have more winners than we did in. In our day? Is. Is. I mean, I think we had like 16, 18 different winners this year.
Kenny Schrader
Oh, yeah, yeah.
John Scottoni
It's more spread out, right? There's more winners nowadays.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's. That's a. That's a record book deal, not a opinion deal. That's a record book deal. I mean, the first year of the new car was. Was it 18 or something like that of the new car? So. Yeah, that's not. That's not an opinion. That's a look up deal.
John Scottoni
Listen, we did it. Herman Schrader. We're back pretty much every week now. I don't foresee. And Kenny, you're. You're done. Yeah. Isn't that something? Did you enjoy yourself?
Kenny Schrader
Well, Herman, anytime I can spend an hour with you, yes, I enjoy myself.
John Scottoni
All right, everybody, you can see Kenny Schrader and myself at the Federated Auto Parts Dirt Car Nationals. We're firing up. We're out at Volusia every week. It's really cool to see your sponsor.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
John Scottoni
Sponsoring that.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah, we're very excited. They've had a great relationship with World Outlaws and with Volusia County Speedway and. Just glad they like racing.
John Scottoni
Yep. All right, everybody, when you come out to see Shredder, come out and see me. My Sunoco dirt cart. All right, everybody, until the next time, the Herman Schrader show just keeps on rolling. And we appreciate you all coming up to Kenny and myself and saying you enjoy the show. It humbles us. And until next week, we'll be talking about the date. Oh, I got goosebumps, Kenny. It's the Daytona 500 in a couple weeks. But I guess we'll come back Monday and talk about what happened here.
Kenny Schrader
And I'm just trying to figure out what. Nothing happens at the track till the following week. Yeah. At the big track till the following week. Yes.
John Scottoni
Yeah, we got the super. We got the Super Bowl. So we'll come back next week and we'll talk about Volusia, and then we.
Kenny Schrader
Go to Super Bowl. We can talk about super bowl, can we?
John Scottoni
Oh, and I keep saying, goodbye, everybody, but you have a bet. You have a. Did you lose your bet?
Kenny Schrader
I lost. I lost the first half. I. I bet my wife 200 hours that Kansas City wouldn't be in the Super Bowl. I just bet it because she's Kansas City. Kansas City. Kansas City. So I just bet it. Just, you know. And now I better. Another 200 they wouldn't win. And I know nothing about football. Nothing.
John Scottoni
Yeah.
Kenny Schrader
And don't want to, but I just thought, man, some of these games, I mean which. They've been phenomenal and I'm. And I'm pulling for them, you know, I'm pulling. But man, some of them things, there was some last minute Hail Marys and just worked out and. But yeah, I'm 200 down right now, but I don't know if I actually pay her.
John Scottoni
Yeah, well you paid her already and she's paid you. But it's fun. But, but I will say this. I do, I do get your point. You're exactly right. Those Kansas City Chiefs, they just kept kicking that last minute field gold and. And it went through the uprights. It worked.
Kenny Schrader
It worked.
John Scottoni
It worked. So they were winning a lot of last second games and it's like it's got to run out on them pretty.
Kenny Schrader
Soon when it hits that goalpost thing and falls in the right way. So I'm sorry, that's just a little too close and that.
John Scottoni
And, and that's the role that the Chiefs are on right now.
Kenny Schrader
So it's just like winning. It's just like winning by 2000ths of a second. You still won. He's still on.
John Scottoni
Boy. Thank God for. Oh my God. I'm get. I'm getting going now. I'm thinking about the first Daytona or one of those Daytona 500s where they.
Kenny Schrader
Had to wait first year.
John Scottoni
Lee Petty.
Kenny Schrader
Lee Petty. And you know who it was?
John Scottoni
You just gave me a hint. Was it Johnny Bo Camp?
Kenny Schrader
Johnny Bocamp. And there was a lap car. There was a lap car there.
John Scottoni
Oh, I didn't know that. You just told me something.
Kenny Schrader
There was a lap car there. There was three wide. There was a lap car there that hindered the view some which really was Joe Weatherly. And then whatever year it was me, I don't remember what year, but Lee Petty went over the wall.
John Scottoni
Oh wow.
Kenny Schrader
With, with Johnny Bocamp. That big crash that, you know. So the first year they were trying to decide who won the race, which they initially gave it to Johnny Bocamp. And there's stories about Lee Petty would not leave town. Would not leave town until they got it right. So he stayed here a couple days and they got it. They got it right through calling around and getting photographs.
John Scottoni
Wow. Isn't that something? So as the, as the Kansas City Chiefs just keep barely winning. Damn it. Lee Petty barely won is your point. And I like that point. And you just educated me because I never realized that that third car was a lapped car. Yeah, and then you're also telling me that when Lee's famous picture of him going over the wall, that was with Johnny. Beau camp, too.
Kenny Schrader
100%. Well, 98%. But I'm sure it was fair to.
John Scottoni
Say that Beau Camp was his nemesis. We'll have to ask Kyle Petty that on the Cal Petty charity ride.
Kenny Schrader
Yeah.
John Scottoni
Was Beau Camp Lee Petty's nemesis? Well, okay, we shook it down. Next week we'll be talking Volusia, the Super bowl, and then, of course, February 16th is the Daytona 500. But NASCAR season has begun. Everybody. Kenny, I'll see you out at Volusia here pretty soon. Until then, goodbye, everybody.
