Let me say this. When I was a child in racing, one thing that I loved was Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Dick Trail. I like the drivers that had cool names. And you, Rick, are from the most coolest thing. And another one is Ricky Stenhouse Dietz. Where is Branch? Out of. Branch.

So, yeah, you got a. You got a really cool sounding town. Rick Mast. Rick knows me better than anybody. And I'm going to give credit where credit's due. And it's me, everybody. Like Schrader would say, back in 1904, we're sitting on pit wall and I'm jacked up on Sundrop. My car's horrible. I'm no good. Rick says, herman, you plan on doing this for a while? I said, oh, yeah. And then what'd you tell me?

You know, we're. We're one of those deals where we don't see each other, but we race together so much, so long. And you really helped me in my career. So in front of all the Herman Schrader friends and fans out there, I want to. I want to thank Rick Mass personally in front of everybody and. Well, guys, you ready to get going?

Yeah. You had to take care of your buddies those days, man. You still do. And you still do.

Yeah. We didn't have cool suits and we ran with seats that were barely bolted in the cars. It's like. Is a seat in there?

Funny. The funny thing, Kenny, I was telling last week. I think it was last week, a couple weeks ago on this show with Deets, when you weren't here talking about in the 90s, we'd all be talking and looking back at Fireball Roberts and all those guys thinking, golly, these cars are dangerous. Man, I'm glad. I am so glad I'm driving these things today. Right? And now we look at what we're driving and what we drove. We're like, dang, that wasn't safe. It's funny how it's evolved.

[Kenny Wallace]

I agree with you because there is a. And I know you sign these little cards all the time that fans collect. Well, there's one card out there where a photographer is taking a picture of me through the passenger side of my car and. And there's just barely a seat and it's like I'm sitting in a chair and it's like, oh, my gosh, look at what we raced in. Yeah, I'm with you. Okay, everybody. Once again, Kenny Schrader is racing and he. There's no way he could be on today. And it is funny though, at the very last minute last night, you know, Dietz always sends out a little deal. Are you all ready to go? And Sherry goes, you know what? I forgot I'm racing. So Kenny Schrader's off racing and totally understandable. Okay, Atlanta, Atlanta Motor Speedway. I'm going to tee it up just like a golf ball for you, Rick and Dietz. But let's, let's go with Rick first. First of all, it is a shame, and I'm not mad about it because we cannot control the weather. It is a shame that this race could not be in prime time because the last time I looked. Deets, you're going to love this. And this is a shout out to Schrader. Over 5,000 votes from Gluck. 89% of the people said it was an incredible race. So, Rick, what is your thoughts on just getting unlucky for one of the greatest races? That was one of the greatest races in NASCAR history.

[Rick Mast]

Yeah, I mean, it took one of the most boring tracks. You know, they catch so much crap, Marcus and that group from changes they make. But they fixed that racetrack. I mean, it's been great ever since they did it. They start that race. You know, the first part of the race was untypical Atlanta. They were running all single file, the first part. And then once they got all settled in and got going and finally at the end of the first stage, start the second stage. Then they started running like we always see at Atlanta. And then the frigging rains came. Right. And your old co host here, your co host, we stayed up to 2 o' clock in the morning to watch that race, because I'm like, I got to stay. I've got to stay up now. I got to do the Herman Schrader. So I got to stay up and watch this. And I'm like, man, it's a shame so many people are asleep. I know people are sleeping. They're missing one of the greatest races we have for the year, and it was great.

[Kenny Wallace]

Yeah. And that Deets and I'll. Because I know what I always say. I know what a fan Dietz is of racing. That. That last stage. Dietz, the third stage. They were racing the whole stage. Any chance Kyle Larson could get to try to go to the bottom, take the lead, he just never gave up. Kyle Larson never rode. And I thought he made that last stage what it was until he started wrecking. Did you like that racing?

[Deets Dietz]

Oh, I loved it. And Riggs. Exactly right. I mean, they took just a absolutely horrible racetrack. From a fan perspective, I knew the fans loved or the drivers loved it because they could slide around dirt, track it, and do all this stuff, but the races for the fans just weren't that great. And, you know, there's a couple of things again, when we were texted about the show, you had talked about the. The environment and the mood there around the racetrack and the number of fans. And that's the thing. When the green flag failed for that race, I mean, you're seeing crowds that Atlanta like we haven't seen in a long, long time. Because even when you go back 25 years ago and they added all those grandstands at Atlanta, you saw a lot of empty seats back in the, you know, the good old days. But the other thing is, is these guys have. Have figured out how to race this track. And it's. It's not like Daytona, Talladega, because you. You don't have to. You don't have to stay tucked in there behind the guy in front of you, because you can clear them. It's like the old slingshot days. Pretty restrictor plate, you know, 84, 85, 86 at Daytona and Talladega, where if you get a run, you just go. Because you can. There's a good chance you can clear the guy if you time it right. And we're seeing a lot of that. And it just. That's what I thought. I think the racing there is just getting better and better.

[Kenny Wallace]

Yeah. So the vibe, Okay, I was there, everybody. We did trackside live. The vibe was the best I've ever seen it at Atlanta. It's Rick, It's Like Atlanta has proved itself. It's official. Atlanta is back and the fans are going to Atlanta because the races have been so good over and over. So when I was there, a sea of people and, and I got to give credit to Marcus Smith. It's. It is like the good old days. There is so much stuff to do, Rick. People are parking their cars early and it is like the good old days. They, they're lined up to get free stuff from this vendor and the T shirt trailers are jacked up and so is your son Ricky or are you had? Do you know this? I just want to let you know. And what is your thoughts of the vibe? The NASCAR vibe is back.

[Rick Mast]

Yeah, we didn't go to Atlanta, but I've been to three. I've been to. I don't worry. Well, I don't wear all been to be honest with you. But it's like it hit me what they call upside the head. The old racing turn upside. It hit me upside the head at Darlington. We went to Darlington. And outside the track. The vibe, especially back in the fan deal where the souvenir thing is, I'm walking around, Katie's with me. That's what it is. My daughter Katie. I said, katie. You see all this shit? Yeah, dad, this is crazy. I said, man, this is the way it was today. Katie. This is the way it was today. They had all the merchandise or the souvenir stands and all the driver autographs and all the stuff going on and we had question and answer things going on back there and the place was back. It's like the whole well would be behind what is now the front straightaway. That's a whole section back there that's just dedicated to the fans and souvenirs. I'm like, darn, I'm looking around, I'm like, yeah, all right, you goofballs, you got it back. You got it figured out here now we doing what we're supposed to do. We don't have that pop up tent. That's what got the merchandise in. That caught so much grief from so many people. It's back to, you know, sometimes you go back to. You go back to the future, right? And in some aspects. But yeah, to your point, Kenny there in the other tracks I went through is the same deal. It's like, it's just a different vibrant. There's no doubt there's a different vibe going on right now when you go to these racetracks. And I've been going since I retired, right? I've been going since, oh 2. And I've watched. I've watched it, right? And we watched the sport grow. We watched as. As I went away from sports, I watched this demise. Now I've watched it coming back, and it. It's definitely a different trait now. There's a spark, there's an energy, there's a synergy that's going on with these fans. And, you know, the. The races, when we have races, like we had Atlanta, golly, bummer. Mighty.

[Deets Dietz]

When I was growing up, I remember, you know, we would watch the races and my mom would be like, I, we gotta go to Bristol, we gotta go to Martinsville, we gotta go to Reefs. And it is not just because they're all in Virginia, Rick. I'm not just saying that it helps. Yeah, it was from a distance standpoint and the size of the racetracks, that's why she wanted to go. But, you know, it was a couple of years ago, Dale Jr. Said if. If there's one place that I want to go watch a race right now is Atlanta. And I even told my son Clinton yesterday. I was like, man, I like to get down there to Atlanta, and let's go to a Cup race sometime. And I never would have said that five years ago about Atlanta, of all places. So, you know, I. We could debate about this, and today's not today the day to do it about, you know, what Speedway Motorsports did to Bristol. Right or wrong, the racing is better, but fans don't like it. But I can tell you what, they hit it out of the park with it. With Atlanta, I mean, there's no doubt they hit that thing perfect.

[Kenny Wallace]

Yeah. All right, kill a little time here for Deets Dietz, if you can bring us up the top 10. All right, everybody. That's what we think of Atlanta. You know, the environment, the vibe, the. The race. Once again, Jeff Glock reports on, you know, the show we take. We're at a disadvantage, Rick, because we do this show on Monday and a whole lot happens. But 89. This could be a new track record, everyone. 89% of the fans say this race was awesome. What? I. I think the other 11% are mad because Chase Elliott did not win, and maybe it was too late. That's the only thing I can think of, because if you don't like that race, it's like, what would you. Why? You know, it was bumper to bumper, door handle, door. Okay, so Ryan Blaney has the fastest car the whole damn race. But pit strategy gets him in the back. He has to work his way up there. So we're coming to the line. It's a three wide finish. Ryan Blaney on the outside, but he's got Christopher Bell pushing him. Christopher Bell wins the race. Ryan Blaney gets the trophy. And that's what Ryan said after the race. Ryan Blaney said, hey, I want to thank Christopher Bell. You know, he pushed me and won the race. And then right in the middle is Carson Hocevar. And then on the inside there is Bubba Walsh. Now we're going to talk about it all, but Ryan Blaney is the winner. And Dietz, what is our top 10?

Christopher Bell finished second, Carson. Joseph Bar was third, Ty Gibbs fourth. Eric Jones again a good run. He ran good the whole race. Finished fifth. Shane Van Gisbergen, another good run.

Yeah, Guggenheimer ran up front the whole race. Austin Dillon was 7, Tyler Reddick 8th, Joey Logano 9th, and Chris Buescher was 10.

So, Rick, you know, we've already give credit to Ryan Blaney. Let's go to the controversial deal right here, which is Bubba. Bubba has a shot to win the race. Bubba Wallace, you know, makes an aggressive move, but. But he has to because he's got to run. Coming down the back straightaway, makes it. He's trying to save the car, goes under the yellow line, does not pass the car in front of him. Eventually does. Oh, gosh, the race is over. And this happened to me at Talladega. I passed Sterling Marlin and they're interviewing me and they go, oh, Kenny Wallace, you've been relegated back to 20th place because you passed below the yellow line. What is your thought? First of all, I want to say I'll tell you my opinion after yours. What is your thoughts of NASCAR putting Bubble Wallace Back to like 29th?

[Rick Mast]

Yeah. Black and white rule book. You gain a position, you go below the yellow line, you get penalized. I wonder, guys, if they had to set it on television, if NASCAR even noticed that. That was my first impression when they said, I'll be below the yellow line, he might get a penalty. I'm like, if you guys hadn't said that, you know, we had so much stuff going on, NASCAR might not even notice that. And I don't. When you look at it, it wasn't a typical move, like we see, to go below the yellow line to gain a spot. What he was penalized for was not what the penalty was put in place for a few years ago. I get it. It's in black and White. It's there. But that the, the. His deal was not. I'm telling you, it was not for what happened or for what they really intended that rule to be. You know, his was out of control, sideways, and it jumped to the left. Right? I mean, that's the way I looked at it.

I don't agree with the penalty, and here's why. Because when he goes below the yellow line, he's not gaining a position. They said if you pass below the yellow line. You know, I, I don't understand here. I thought I understood the rule. I thought, because I was a victim of it, I told everybody it happened to me at Talladega. And then later on, they refined the rule. They said, if you are forced to blow the line. Well, Sterling Marlin forced me below the line. So you would think I'm the king at knowing about this, this yellow line rule. But I don't understand because, okay, Bubba went below the yellow line, and when he got back in line, he still was not past the guy in front of him. He doesn't pass, really doesn't even pass, but doesn't even get by the car in front of him. So I, I still don't like. Okay, everybody's. You know, a lot of people don't like Bubba. That's why the fans are all. It's a rule. Okay, but it's a bull rule. That was a. He didn't pass anybody. He got position. He was the guy that made it three wide. That's all he did. And when he came back up, he was not in front of the guy in front of him. So I, I don't like it.

It's a different situation in that, that. And again, he kept bringing up the SMT data after the race. I would hope that NASCAR would look at that, because to me, it looked like he went down below your line. Like, all right, he gets penalized. That sucks. But it is what it is. But then whenever he said somebody ran it, he's turning left and somebody runs into the back of him and, you know, it's all he could do to keep it out of the inside wall. There are ways to look at that, and that's. That's a little bit different because everybody thinks being forced below the yellow line is. Is you're inside of somebody and they push you down. Not that somebody hits you from the back. The other thing that, that I'll say about that into this day, as far as I'm concerned, Regan Smith won Talladega in that oh, one army car.

Force below the yellow line anywhere. That was, that was Regan Smith at Talladega by Tony Stewart. And if that would have been Jimmy Johnson, I got a feeling that he wouldn't have been penalized. But that's a different story.

Okay, so, Rick, this rule came about back in our day, back in my day. So you and I are going down the back straightaway in the Bush grand national race and Bobby Labonte is down by the grass down by Lake Lloyd at Daytona. I'm like, what the hell is Bobby doing? And then we get to the end of the straightaway, Daytona on the back straight, and Bobby's got to get back on the racetrack. Wrecked our balls off. I mean, it's like, Bobby, you went off the racetrack and then you had to come back on. And NASCAR says after a lot of that, you know, then everybody started doing it and then wrecking. So do you remember the origin of that rule? I mean, that was my thought about where that rule started.

Well, let me tell you, we were on the Bush Clash. I'm behind, I'm going down the back stretch. They're flying up in front of me four wide and I'm on the inside of a line in front of me is 4 wide, 3/4 way through the back stretch. I looked into mirror and to the inside of me, which would make it sticks wide at the end of the straightaway. I looked, and the wildest driver that ever drove on in our circuits, you could never race against him. Is absolutely crazy. Mark Martin took a six wide, three three course way down the back straightaway at Daytona. The other dirt was flying. I'm like, this ain't going to work. This is not going to work. So I eased out of the gas. We get to the turn, dude, Mark's still on the flat. Kenny, still on the flat going into.

Yeah.

And you know, you know what happens, you know what happens. Right here we are, everybody's doing this and I tell that story all the time. I'm like, man, when you, when you in the bush class, if Mark Martin would do a move like that, that tells everybody what the bush class means to people. And you know, I don't know if it's that bush race or if it's at that particular lap in the Bush Clash. So I don't know what started which one did it, but it was one of those big to dos that started that deal. And the sports better for it. People are not getting wrecked as much

So I remember? I remember 1999. Rusty Wallace leading Dayton 500.

Jeff Gordon goes. Going into turn one, Ricky Rudd's putts it around down there on the. The apron because he had her. His car was wrecked. And they asked Rusty after the race, they said, you moved up. Do you wish you to stay down there? And he said, if I stayed down there, the 24 would have run into the Ricky R. And it would have killed him. Which might have been a little dramatic. Has. Has Rusty ever said, you know what? I should have held his ass down.

And. And in response to that, I remember Jeff Gordon said I was going to go down to the hot dog stand in the infield to. To pass Rusty. So, you know, two hard heads, two greats. Listen, that was a. Hell, my heart hurt horribly for my brother. Rusty come close to winning the Daytona 500. Hey, one more. It's like I told Larry McReynolds yesterday. I said, larry, I use your quotes often. I said, we about to beat this like a dead horse. So one. One more thing, everybody. One more thing. Schrader. This is a tribute to Schrader. Since he's not here, we are. No, Schrader is racing Darlington, the Southern 500. And it's. I think it's Earnhardt and Rusty. They're going down what is now the back straightaway. Schrader makes it 3 wide. The video's out there all day long. And Rusty puts his paw out there. No, Schrader, no, three wide, going into what is now turn one. And Rusty saying, no, no. And they wrecked their ass off because Schrader couldn't get back up. So anyway, everybody, that's the reason the rule is there. Because back in my day, we were crazy, and we would go anywhere we needed to go to make the pass.

And I think it also goes to show that these guys, everybody's like, oh, man, these kids today are crazy. Nobody raced like that back in the 90s. Would they go back and look at Napoleon? Just go to where the wreck is on you back about 30 seconds and you'll see what calls those rakes.

We all love Carson Hocevar, we really do. But there is an ever growing problem in the garage area. I was at the racetrack. The drivers do not like his style. Okay, this is not me. Don't jump on me. However, when the race is over, the sound bite is out there all day long. When the race is over, they go to Carson Hosavar. Carson says, well, nobody will go with me. So Carson is feeling the wrath of these drivers right now because they don't like his style. Now it is an interesting situation from the psychology standpoint where people, you know, drivers in the garage area, you know, I mean late last night Corey Hines started up on social media site X. One more thing about this Carson Osavar is on the pre race and he says I want all the drivers out there to quit talking and bring it. And. And Cory Heim responds, son, you know how they do down south, Rick, you know, kind of down where you're at, but. But maybe a little further south, son, you know, in other words, you know, just like it's kind of a derogatory, like, you're my boy.

It's like A.J. when A.J. foyt says, Cowboy, you need to go run into the woods.

So Corey. So once again, Carson Hosovar is on the pre race show and he says, all you drivers, just bring it. And Heim responds on social media site and says, son, in other words, Corey is like, I spun your ass out at Coronado Naval Base, so I did bring it is what Corey was saying. So

I think they brought it to last night.

Carson. This is Carson Osvar. He says, nobody will go with me. Well, he's going to win lots of races. That's not our point, but point is, is he's seeing what he's laid down. Rick, what are your thoughts?

Yeah, he's got a. He's good, man. He's got a tough road hoe. The one thing that happened, Bubba stuck with that boy last night a lot. I mean, Carson, we watched Carson all night. I mean, Everybody's watching that 77 just for the moves he makes. Man. I was sitting there like, where's he at? When he had the flat tire, right? They didn't talk about him for like 20 minutes. I'm like, well, where the hell's he at? Where's he. And all of a sudden there he is back in the top 10 and running again. And I'm like, man, it's exciting to watch this dude. And I will say that I saw some moves, I saw him do some stuff and he got hung out. He was hung out to drive, but he kept doing it. It wasn't bothering him. It didn't seem like. Because he'd make same move over and over. Nobody go with him. But I will say the Bubba and Tyler Reddick both seem to go with that boy more than anybody on the racetrack. Yeah. As we all know, do you got the. You got the goodwill bank in nascar. You build up that bank, you got goodwill in that bank, you know, then you use it against other fel. Fellow competitors. But you know, Carson's deal is he doesn't have. He doesn't have a goodwill bank. Don't really care to have one. He expressed that yesterday. He don't care. Right. He's going to do his deal at some point. It might be detrimental enough to where he sets the whole garage down and says, listen, guys, kind of like Ernie Irvin did us, Kenny, in the day, man, I'm sorry, you know, I'm gonna do better. And you do that one time and you get everybody on your side again. But right now he's out there as a free spirit getting it done, you know. And I know, I listened to the commentary pre race with Jamie McMurray and Burton and they were, you know, they were on his ass pretty good right, when they talked to him and then talking about him like, yeah, guys, I get what you're saying, but you, you're dealing with a free spirit here that's a little bit, got a little bit different take than what we've seen in the past. And listen, I'm staunch on this, you know, the way it is. You know, when we come up in our sport, you get taught the way it is. And as you're there a while, then you teach the new ones coming up the way it is. That's the way it's always been, right, Kenny? And, and you know that. But this deal with Carson, you know, it's a little different. It's a little different deal and he's making it work right now and it's. I'm just interested. It's very interesting to see as this thing goes on, you know, how this is going to turn out for the guy. I don't know. So far I'm, I'm joined watching the deal. I just enjoy watching and then I joy watch the people gripe about it, right? And if I was there and you were there there every week, Kenny, and we had to deal with it, we wouldn't like him either. We'd be mad or nail at him, get that crazy ass off the racetrack, you know that, blah, blah, blah. But as a fan, it's like, it's pretty entertaining, man. I just don't want him, what I don't want him to do. Here's, here's the main. My main thing about Carson Osmoir, when you pull the reins back on a driver, sometimes they, they settle down and do good. And a lot of times you kill that driver's skill. You, you kill that little extra thing that they've got that makes them fast and exciting. So that's what I don't want to have happen to Coach Toast, pull the reins back and mess him up.

[Kenny Wallace]

And D, I want to get you involved in this, but let me give my opinion. When you go back in my day, Jeff Burton, Mark Martin, they said the most important thing in Their life is credibility inside the garage area. Now, me, it would hurt my feelings if the drivers didn't like me. But. But if God said you can only choose one, do you want the fans to love you or the garage area to love you? I want the fans to love me because there's way more of them than there is in the garage area. But in my day, it was Jeff Burton and Mark Martin that said, you know, and Mark Martin said it on Kenny Conversation. He said, my crown jewel of my career is the respect of my peers in the garage area. So Carson has no respect in the garage area. They respect him as going fast and a driver. So Carson's got the fans on his side. And I just wonder, Dietz, from your perspective, and I always go to this because you're such a, a good race fan and a racer and you've been around the sport, you go to all the short tracks. What is your thoughts on. On Carson, you know, as far as what that subject matter. I just said garage area or fans stay in that realm, too. You got to stay in that realm.

The fans are not going to determine whether or not you win races or not.

[Kenny Wallace]

And good point.

Ryan Blaney. Ryan Blaney is a lot like Mark Martin and Jeff Burton. And if I'm sitting there and it comes down, it's like there's no way in the world I can win this race. But either Ryan Blaney or Carson host Bar is going to win this race. I'm going to push Ryan Blaney 100% of the time, every time, even if it results in me finishing worse, because I am not going to let, I am not going to help that 77 win a race. Now, when you, when you look at comparisons, and again, I know there's some younger fans that watch this show and kind of like the back in our day. But listen, to understand this sport, you. You got to go back and you got to. I was not born in 1965. I was not born in 1977 when, when Darrell Waltrip started driving that Gatorade 88. But people didn't like him because he ran his mouth and he was kind of wild on the racetrack, but. But not like Josevar. Ernie Irvin is. Everybody does this Dale Earnhardt comparison. Ernie Irvin's the comparison. And I think that the deal with Hosavar is, is just like Ernie Irvin. He came from the short tracks in that had never won a race when he got in that four car. And I think he thought that he had to overdrive it improve himself to show himself worthy of being there. And he caused a bunch of wrecks and he got a bunch of enemies in that garage area. When he got in that 28 car, he did not drive like that. And he gained people's respect and he went out there and won a lot of races. I'm going to tell you that. Here's a tweet that Carson hosbar sent out 23 hours ago. This ain't going to help him any, giving away free T shirts to the first 77 people that bring a different active driver's T shirt. Trailer. So, you know, we've said it before. Yeah, I can like him, I can dislike him. None of it matters. But when it gets down to it, don't start whining about why people aren't working with you. Because I watched it the whole race yesterday. Oh, good point. And it was the same thing. Quit whining about it. If you want to go out there and you want to put your foot in your mouth continually with these guys and disregard everything that about anything else that anybody else is doing that you just go out there and wreck their stuff for cost of a championship. What they did with Corey Haim, you reap what you sow. So you know what? You may win, you may win 24 races, but those restricted plate races, you're going to have a hard time winning.

Boy, I'll tell you what, you just Deb, that. That was really good, Rick. You know, you and I are jaded. Jaded means we know too much. We're in the garage area there. We got Dietz, who's been in racing his whole life. He's the one that reminded us that after the race, Carson said, nobody will go with me. Well, no.

It's better, it's bigger because of Carson. And my hero of the week was Zane Smith. Because at one point, what we had was we just had Carson and we need, you know, there's Yang and Yang. There's black, there's white. You know, there was Earnhardt. Then we needed Rusty, and then Earnhardt and Gordon. We just had Carson. And then Zane Smith came and I'm like, yes, it's complete. Now Zane is the bad guy. And this is.

How was he the bad guy?

[Kenny Wallace]

Well, because he went. Well, he went against him. See, the fans love Carson. The fans love Carson, so they're going to hate anybody that goes against him. So Zane goes against him, and that completes the wrestling match. You know, Carson gets out. You know, Carson's out there with his championship belt in the ring. The fans are going, yeah. And then Zane comes in like, Darth Vader is blind. I don't like you. And then, yes, that's a good promoter. That. That's why I said Zane Smith is what the fans have been waiting for. The fans didn't understand it until I'm shoving it down their throats right now. But Zayn is what we needed because he completed the good and the bad.

You brought it up. He. He expressed what. The way I would feel if I was in the garage as a driver. The way Deets is the way he said he would express that because I'd be mad at coasting Hosvar. There's no doubt about it. If you go back to Humpy era, Humpy Wheeler's prime promoting era, right? And we got Kosan Hosvar, I guarantee you that's all you'd see on billboards around Charlotte Motor Speedway. In the race coming up is Humpy come. Come see Carson. Come see the hill, the hail drivers. Come see Carson. That, you know, from a fan's perspect perspective, it's a. It's a good gig. From a driver's perspective, no, get this guy the hell off his racetrack. I don't want him around me and that. That stuff, you know, and, you know, here's a good part about this whole thing, and I've seen this happen before. Carson could take one serious meeting with every driver. Put them all in a room. Guys, I'm sorry, but the ways I have done the. I have been struck by the light. I have been talked to and called. I now understand I can't do what I've been doing. I'm sorry, I will be better. And the guys will say, yeah, I hear you. I don't trust. You have to see it on the racetrack. Each one of them gets one or two interactions on the racetrack with Carson doing real good. And by the third week, all the drivers are going to love Carson Hussevar and give him all the respect in the world. Now, if that day ever comes for Carson where he does that and say, I saw the light, I am redeemed, you know, I don't know if that ever happened to the guy. I just don't know. My. Again, my concern with this guy is when the reins do get pulled back, and they will, at some point, something will cause this to happen to him. They're either the owner, the sponsor, they either pull the range or Carson will figure out I've got to pull my reins back. When that happens, I don't want him to lose that edge. I've seen it. I've seen it with too many drivers, and it kills their edge, man. And if he can pull the reins back, back and keep that edge, good Lord of mercy, he'd be a multi zillionaire.

Ernie Irvin did not lose that egg. And. And, no, you're right. People can go back and look on YouTube. It's 90 or 91 Talladega. They interviewed Rusty, and Rusty's like, none of us will be around this guy. Yeah, we don't want him on the racetrack. We don't want him around us. And Ernie got in that driver's meeting and said, listen, I know I've screwed up, and I'm.

I was one of them, dude. I didn't want to be around him either. I was one of them. I did not want to be around Ernie. It's crazy. Crazy. You're gonna end up wrecking. Right. So to your point, Dates. Yeah. So I know. I get it. I get all angles of this, but. Yeah, for the sport.

Okay. So anyhow, so here's the situation, everyone. We are. This is. This is the Herman Schrader Show. We're talking about subject matter. We. We really don't care what happened. We're. We're all retired, but myself and Rick Mast, Myself and Rick Mast, we have seen the movie and we've starred in it. We're commenting on this subject matter, and Rick is right. We've seen this, and here's what's going to happen. So while we all love Carson, While we all love him spinning people out, saying, after the race, saying after the race, nobody will go with me. We've seen this. And here's what will happen, because it will happen now. The fans are going to love it because they remind, you know, people are saying this how Earnhardt was. I will remind you something, though. 99.9 of the time when Earnhardt did that stuff, he went to Victory Lane and it muted the conversation. It's like, well, we can't. Damn it. Want to chew his ass out. But he won the race, so.

And the next week, he went up to next week, Kenny, he went up to us, put his arm around us, man, sorry I wrecked it, but I won the race. All right.

With Schrader. He would fly with him in his airplane. Yeah. This son of a wrecked me and turned at Pocono and now he likes me, you know, so. Okay, same subject, but we're moving on. I see this and I just laughed at myself because I've always said in the past, NASCAR loves this. So while, while the NASCAR executives pull these drivers in the their hauler to chew their ass out, here's this. Now this is what we did not have back in our day. The social media team is out there all over social media going, this is great. And the, the NASCAR social media team is out there egging it on somewhere. You know, the nascar, you know, competition and NASCAR media are going to have to get together because NASCAR media is going, yeah, yeah, this is cool. And the competition people are like, boys, you need to calm down. But, but NASCAR is loving this. They're licking their chops. There's no doubt. Okay, everybody. This, this Carson, host of our is so good for our sport that we've done a complete show and we are at a required 45 minutes. Goodbye, everybody.

And I'm like, this is a world I've never experienced and didn't know.

We were eating hot dogs at Martinsville last week.

Yeah, exactly. In fact, I remember one time. I remember one time being down there eating all this exquisite food. I'm like, damn, I sure would love to have a hot dog right now. But it was like, good Lord, this is a different world. So, yeah, that was my. That was my intro entry into that world, man. And it was so cool. I remember Harry Gantt looked me when he was riding on the plane. He said, rick, yeah, this is the ultimate. It will get. Don't get no better than this. I said, okay, all right. He was right. But anyhow, that was my entrance.

You deserved it. And you put your time in and you know, just because you and I pretty much lived three quarters of our life, you know, in the same garage area. But I have recognized that and. But the key thing is you. You're the one. And.

Oh, yeah, sure. Did I tell you when I met him, I met him when I would. Harry retired the last year. His retirement year. He was. Burt was at Atlanta the last race.

How needham and Burt Reynolds both showed up for that race. And I got to meet Bert and, and I met Hal once before, but Burt was just. He's just a cool dude, man. This, you know, just like talking to you or you or anybody, you know? No different. Hit the hairpiece. His hairpiece looked good.

I was gonna say when you, when you stared at Burt Reynolds. You know, a lot of those Hollywood actors, they never come out of makeup. They get used to.

So the next day they do like a ride along and go over there and I'm there covering it for nascar. Got to go over there and interview Dwight. And I interview him and I said, never met the guy, never seen him before. And I said, please don't take this the wrong way that you played the most hateful son of a in that movie I've ever seen. He's always. Thank you. I really, I really appreciate that.

There was a. An actor that came to our shop because he played in Days of Thunder or whatever it was. And I looked at him and I said, boy, I hated you in Mississippi Burning. He goes, good, I did my job.

Yeah, he played in Mississippi and you know, it was a horrible movie, but he was. Hey. But yeah, that they. One thing I've learned as I grew older maybe 20 years ago, that. That these people play characters and I wonder how that cannot mess with them, Rick, psychologically, because they have to become these people.

Yeah. Yeah. Did you ever do you. Were you involved in the movie in the 80s, Race to Win or Born to Win?

Oh, look at up. They look that up. It's like rated one of the worst movies ever made of all movies. Even before the silent times, we went down and we hit cars and it was in the mid-80s, late-80s. It was called Born Were Born when or Race to Win or something. George Kennedy was there and Mark Singer and some beautiful Italian dark skinned girl. It was. But it was. It was absolutely horrendous. It was horrendous, but it's still out there.

The older you get, the more maintenance you got to do to your body. It's just like a car. And I'm like, okay, all right, I'll keep that in mind.

It snuck up on me like a ton of bricks. And I'm like, what the hell? Okay, everybody, we've done a complete show, so let's. Let's quickly go through my notes. I pull this on Kenny Schrader. The media asked Denny Hamlin, because Denny is part of this club inside nascar, like the racers union. And NASCAR does listen to the drivers. So Denny knows this stuff. So the media asked Denny Hamlin if they're going to change the super speedway rules. And here's the reason I bring this up, Rick. And this is specifically to you. Denny says what they're working on really hard right now is to bring back the old days where you can pull out and just about get by the other driver. And so this is what we need, you know, to try to create this pass. What are your thoughts, Danny saying they're working very hard on this.

went across the top, right? They did that. That's when I think that was a famous quote from Dale Earnhardt Senior. We can't do this. This ain't racing. I ain't racing. This is racist bull, blah, blah, blah. I mean, he raised heck about it, you know, but they were trying stuff then to try to make this happen. You try to keep him bunched up and try to make a slingshot type deal happen again, and, you know, when it happens, we'll know it. You know, you got somebody, you got smartest people in the world in this sport, and they can't quite put together what they need to put together these cars. Make it happen. I don't know if you give them more horsepower. A lot of guys say, just give them horsepower and see what happens. Well, that's fine. But when they do that, they always put more spoiler on them. Okay. To slow them down because you can't reach go over that 200 mile an hour threshold that supposedly is a magic number to keep cars out of the grandstands. I don't know. I know it'll be great if they ever figure it out. You know, I'm thinking about really sitting down and ciphering on it, Kenny, and coming up. Coming up with a. Coming up with an answer. And then selling it, patent it, and then selling it to nascar. If I could do that, you know, then things will be cool. That's my take on this. I hope they do it.

Then he won with my car and

he won the race. He won the race at Talladega. If you Go back and you look at those races. Talladega 2001 in the fall, the 2001 Daytona 500 in the spring. Talladega race, as I remember, you could pull out, and it was not a deal where you could do it by yourself, but if you had somebody with you, you could pull out and you. You could clear those guys. And I thought that was the best rules package. And I, I always thought that NASCAR changed it because they didn't like the. The way that the cars were getting bunched up. But, I mean, I don't. I don't see anything you can do to not have them bunch up. Now, to me, if you can. If you can clear people, that's what causes these races. People pull out and they hit that wall of air and then they all just bogged down. And then the cars with the momentum coming from behind them come in, and that's when. When. When the wreck ends up happening. But I thought that was the best. The best rules package.

I'll tell you a side note on this. I had a man tell me one time that if you remember this back in 2000, sometimes guys, when the Indy cars were running Texas.

Do you remember watching some of those races? I mean, there'd be three lead changes every single lap. Yeah. It's the most exciting racing. I had a couple folks tell me Brown France was watching that. They said, that's what I want our cars to do. We want our cars to do that. Right. And we've never. We've never been able to match that. And IndyCar had matched it since then. It's like a period of four or five years. Those guys would go to those racetracks, and it was just fascinating to watch, you know, it's fascinating.

I know a lot of people didn't like the cots with the tandem drafted and stuff like that, but to me, that put strategy back into it, because it might not have been one car, but you could take two cars and you could get a run from a half straightaway behind and catch that other group and blow their doors off.

[Kenny Wallace]

And that.

To me, that's better than getting bogged down into these packs where the, The, The. The momentum swings are. What's causing the wrecks.

Yeah. I guess the best part for me is I didn't realize Kenny brought that up. I didn't realize then he said that. I didn't realize they were looking at that. That's good.

I'm like, listen, you're on it too. You just want to act like you're not to be. Make yourself feel something and you're all on it. So that's where I get all my information is social media. During I'm at the airport waiting on my airplane. I'm waiting for my food and, and my hand on a Bible. That's just downtime in life. My life is not just all the time, so. But that's where I got it.

It was. It's just a relapse from a couple years ago. Remember a couple years ago they're wrecking every single lap and everybody started getting on them. The cup driver started fussing about him, media started fussing about him. NASCAR was fussing about him. NASCAR talked to him. Remember everybody got to him, said, y' all quit. Y' all stop this. Behave. And they, and for a couple years they did just like all of a sudden they had a relay. You know, sometimes you have a relapse physically or mentally. And I just, I just put the lime rock deal off on the. Guess what guys. These guys have been so good for a couple years, they're like, to hell with it. We're just going to go back their old ways today, get it all out of our system. Hopefully it's out of their system for the rest of the year. Because if it ain't hell, there won't be enough cars left at the end of the season to be our trucks to run. Right? That's kind of, that's kind of my take. It's just one of those days.

And I thought the funny joke was none of the red flags were for rain. They were all wrecked. And who's our leader? Elton Sawyer said in the cup driver meeting on Sunday, he said they used a record amount of oil dry. In the O'Reilly race, they wrecked so much that there were 18 cars left on the lead lap. But I watched the race. When they went green flag for the final stint, it was like a handful of cars went by. You know, one of those Talladega deals where it's like this is what we got left in the race. And congratulations, Justin Allgar. Hell of a win by Justin. He wraps it up. He's your regular season champion. But Rick and Dietz, they wrecked and they wrecked. So it was so to your point, Rick, I guess they're getting it out of their system too.

Yeah, man. I call, I call it the wave. I call it the waves. I've always called it the wave. Like for two months you'll have tire blown out. For two months you've got gas cars running out of gas, right? It's just for two months you got Toyotas dominating. Our racing has waves in this waves of wreck. Hopefully between the trucks and O'Reilly, they got it all out of their systems this past weekend. I don't know why they all decided to wreck at Atlanta. I don't know. You know why?

Well, I will say this. When I watched the race, Austin, Austin Hill got loose all by himself. And that's, you know, I think the track being wore out and obviously they're going at it, but you know, the track is aging and boy, by the way, this is way my adh, you know, Attention deficit disorder. Did you all in the cup race, did you see Austin Cindrick say that car a couple times? I'm like, you might, might give up a little bit and get this thing. Man, was he losing, saving that thing at 200 mile an hour almost or whatever it is. 180. But I mean that's where Atlanta is now, guys. Rick.

[Rick Mast]

Yeah, it's war. It's the year. To your point, that's. I think that's probably the key to that. You know, the track, that new asphalt is gone. That's sticky, man. When you get new asphalt, and that's sticky. That stays for a while. And when it goes away, it's like you go back to the next race. You just. At six months ago, like, what the hell happened? They got something on this racetrack. It's real slick. No, it ain't slick. It's just that time period. And all the tracks do that with asphalt. You go. You'll be racing, racing, racing. All of a sudden, you go back again. You're like, what the hell happened to racetrack? Like, it happens overnight, right? And you think it's your car. You're not sure what's going on. And you get in a race and everybody's getting wadded up, getting hauled off in wreckers and ambulances. You like, I better watch what's going on here. And you're right, Kenny. I think that was part of it.

[Kenny Wallace]

Yeah. Only. Only it's not that. I know. It's just that you watch the race, and the guys were getting loose by themselves. And I said. I said, oh, that. That's. That's kind of new. Okay, everybody. Kenny Schrader is not here, but we are a great tag team. And this is where I would say, schrader, take it away. I'm going to take his spot right now. Let's just congratulate Tanner English in dirt racing. This is our dirt racing segment. Tanner English wins the summer national super late Model championship. He wraps it up, and that's awesome. The modified division, my division. I decided to take it easy this year. I've been everywhere, but I still have run 14 races. But my guy, Zeke McKenzie. Zeke is a good racer. And I just want to say that I remember Zeke just starting. He builds his own race cars. He will wrap up the modified summer national championship, and I will be at the Prairie Dirt Classic in Fairberry. And that is July 24th and 25th. Zeke will wrap that up there. So that is the summer national champions, everybody. Tanner English, Super Late models, and in the mods, Zeke McKenzie. The very last summer national race was last night. On Sunday night. It was pretty cool. Tyler Carpenter, they came to his home track, Wayne County Speedway in Ohio, and he won on his home turf. So the summer nationals ended pretty much at Tyler Carpenter's Wayne County Speedway. And Tyler Carpenter said, you come to my home. I'm going to defend my turf. Hey, Rick, did you have home turf? What were your race?

[Rick Mast]

Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Natural Bridge Speedway. Natural Bridge Speedway. You've been there?

Yeah.

Natural Bridge Speedway in Virginia. You've been there. And a shout out to those guys. Man, new owners took over two years ago. The Bradley family, they have revitalized this racetrack. You know, my dad built it in 67. That track has run every single week since 1967. Never missed a season or a week other than rain. And the new group, ownership group come in two years ago. They've built wall as a wall all around that racetrack. Now, Kenny, bathroom upgrades, concession upgrades. It's a great deal. Everybody, any promoter in the country needs to come to Natural Bridge Speedway and just sit down with these owners and talk to them. Look at before and after pictures. Good car counts, good crowd counts. Right? They look. They need to look at Natural Bridge and, man, this way, we need to do our deal. It's a wonderful, wonderful what this group has done with our race.

I mean, back in our day, it. That was every week. And that's why the fan. It was like wrestling at the. It was wrestling everybody. We got along, but somehow we all hated each other, and the fans ate it up. And I think. Rick, what do you think?

It's kind of like. It's kind of like a good book. You got to have a he. You got to have heroes or a good story. You got to have heroes of Villains and tragedy, and we've had all that this year. We've had it all this year, man. So, you know, all these emotions. All emotions come out, you know, and that's what we've got going on right now. It's been tough. As tough as hell on us, but it's also been very entertaining, what we got going on. And it's, you know, you've got all three of those elements happening. You don't want them, but that's where it is. And it creates interest and excitement and, you know, our sports in a good spot right now. It's in a good spot.

It's what makes season special. You look at 1994, Jeff Gordon's second year and him winning in the brickyard and Davy and Alan Kowicki passing away. I mean, Ernie Irvin, Rick. I mean, it's just. There's a lot of what that was 93, but. 93, 94. You know, that's what makes those seasons memorable and special.
