Few women in medieval history matched Eleanor of Aquitaine for wealth, ambition, and political influence. Born into a powerful dynasty, Eleanor inherited the vast Duchy of Aquitaine, making her one of the most sought-after brides in Christendom. Eleanor became Queen of France by marrying Louis VII, joining him on the ill-fated Second Crusade, before annulling the marriage in a historic separation. She then wed Henry II of England, creating an empire spanning from Scotland to the Pyrenees. As Queen of England, she shaped Europe’s politics, managing lands and diplomacy.
